You don’t want a coat that’s super thick and toasty in the early days of fall when the weather can vary so drastically. When you overestimate the temperature, you’ll just end up profusely sweating underneath all that insulation. Trust me—I’ve been there.     This story goes out to my spill-prone queens. There is nothing more frustrating than getting a stain on your clothes and not being able to get it out. As a mother of two little ones (and with my own fair share of spills), I battle stains on the daily. Through this humbling practice, I have learned a few things along the way like what fabrics are the easiest to clean and the best cleaning duo for getting out even the toughest of stains—I am happy to share my learnings with you below.

    When it comes to easy-cleaning fabrics, there are both natural and synthetic options that you will want to reach for on your next shopping trip. Cotton and wool will always be great natural picks. As for synthetic fabrics, polyester reigns supreme and is often used to create fleece and faux-leather pieces. On any of these fabrics, your best bet in combating a stain is to treat it before it has a chance to set. First, gently remove any debris. Next, run cool or warm water over the area and go in with my trusty duo: vinegar and clear dish soap.

    I like to keep a small spray bottle with a 1:1 mix of white vinegar and water to spray directly on stains, drip on some dish soap (a little goes a long way), and then I take a toothbrush that I keep reserved for laundry and begin to scrub the area—You can scrub harder on cotton pieces but need to be gentler on more textured fabrics like wool or fleece. Add more of the spray mix or soap as you see fit and feel free to rinse in cool or warm water as needed to check your progress. From there, launder as usual.

    Unlike the 2020s, a time when every blazer constructed for women seems to feature an excess of fabric, the essential silhouette had a far more structured and fitted look 40 years ago, in a far too often slept on era for fashion, the ’80s. Then, the likes of Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan at Dior, and Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel designed the now-favorite workwear piece not to look like menswear, but to accentuate a woman’s frame and sense of style, with hourglass tailoring, cropped-at-the-waist cuts, unexpected lapels, statement buttons, and bold color options that made each individual blazer feel like an outfit in and of itself. 

    In the last few months, ever since I went to a vintage store in Milan called Cavalli e Nastri and discovered a treasure trove of ’80s-era YSL Rive Gauche blazers inside, I’ve been perhaps a bit too obsessed with sourcing the French label’s nipped-in and cropped suiting and similar styles from other brands from the time on the secondhand market, setting up endless eBay and The RealReal alerts in order to get the best deals. And the more I search for them, the more often I see them elsewhere, on the streets of New York, in hidden vintage stores, and most frequently, on Instagram. 

    All this has lead me to the conclusion that while you shouldn’t get rid of every oversize blazer in your closet, it is time to make room for a different style—an older style—that, I know firsthand has the power to make any outfit feel more polished, more expensive, and more tuned in than any big, boxy alternative ever could.     There was a time not too long ago when nearly every single outfit I wore included an oversize blazer. But over the last few years, I’ve begun to look for other alternatives that don’t feel so safe and expected. And the only real contender I’ve found along the way just got Kate Middleton‘s royal stamp of approval. (Talk about validation.)

    At a celebration for the reopening of the National Portrait Gallery in London this week, the Princess of Wales wore a black-and-white ensemble by Self-Portrait (which is still available in limited sizes at Matches) with Aquazzura pumps and a Chanel clutch. At first glance, her dress appears more like a jacket and skirt, with the top half being the outerwear style I’ve slowly but surely been replacing my endless big-blazer collection with: the lady jacket. 

    Unlike a typical blazer, lady jackets are cropped and fitted, making them appear chicer and more formal. Many are made out of tweed or bouclé, though J.Crew’s become famous for designing them with Italian wool and cotton, thus offering up a more casual alternative. While Middleton’s take looks more like a suit, my favorite styling method is to pair one with loose denim, ballet flats or kitten-heel pumps, and a simple tee or tank.     I’m not someone who holds onto things in their wardrobe that they don’t wear. I suppose that’s in part due to the size of my apartment, which doesn’t exactly allow for excess. In the summer, I throw one on and run out the door with barely a thought because they’re the most practical item one can wear while summer temps blaze.     There are a lot of things French women do exceptionally well—knowing how to dress is definitely one of them. But even so, when it comes to my own personal style I have very little in common with the “french girl style” archetype. I prefer cargo pants to tapered denim, I like my sneakers eccentric and over the top as opposed to classic white styles, and I own very few striped sweaters.     A few reasons why it’s been my number one choice as of late: it adds sophistication to my denim and trousers effortlessly, and its ability to be worn as a top when buttoned up (as opposed to worn open like a cardigan) reduces my need to think harder about what I’m wearing.     When it comes to fashion in 2022, there’s one thing that I am absolutely certain about: If both Taylor Russell and Hailey Bieber wear the same article of clothing, it’s going viral. There are no ifs, ands, or buts about it—simply put, their combined influence is too substantial for something they mutually agree on to not make it big. Right now, the item the two of them can’t get enough of is Loewe’s puffer bomber jacket.

    The bubble-like bomber was first seen on the runway at the Spanish fashion brand’s F/W 22 show in green and black leather. The latter colorway has since been spotted on the Bones and All actress and Loewe ambassador on multiple occasions—first at a screening for the film put on by the brand’s creative director, Jonathan Anderson, and again in a viral TikTok.
