Detroit Lions Reveal Thanksgiving Halftime Show Performer

The Detroit Lions have officially announced their 2025 Thanksgiving Day halftime performer, and it is peak Detroit. Music legend Jack White, yes, the Detroit-born frontman of The White Stripes and a 12-time GRAMMY winner, will take the stage at Ford Field when the Lions host the Green Bay Packers on November 27.

And honestly, this might be one of the most Detroit halftime lineups ever.

A Detroit Icon Takes Center Stage

White’s résumé doesn’t really need selling. He was just inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with The White Stripes. He’s one of the most influential rock artists of the last 25 years. And he’s been repping Detroit long before the Lions were cool again.

The Lions announced his selection Sunday, calling out his deep Motor City roots:

“Born and raised in Detroit as the youngest of 10 siblings, Jack White’s utilitarian approach filters through all his work… Over a quarter century into his professional musical career, White’s ability to weave relevant, compelling, and poignant artistry into his music leaves him unparalleled.”

That is some elite Lions PR copy.

The Eminem–Paul Rosenberg Era Begins

This year’s halftime show is also the first produced under the Lions’ new multi-year partnership with Detroit rap icon Eminem and longtime manager Paul Rosenberg, who are now executive-producing the Thanksgiving halftime shows through 2027.

If Jack White is the opening move in this era, consider the bar officially raised.

More Than Music

White’s performance is part of a larger collaboration with Verizon, who will host a hunger-relief kit–packing event outside Ford Field before kickoff. Fans can participate on-site, adding an extra community-focused element to the holiday tradition.

1 p.m. at Ford Field.
A Detroit rock legend at halftime.

This is exactly the kind of energy the city lives for.

The White Stripes reunite in court to sue Trump

Detroit rocker Jack White is taking his battle with Donald Trump to the courtroom, making good on his pledge to pursue legal action against the Trump campaign after it used a clip of White’s hit “Seven Nation Army” in a social media post.

White and his former White Stripes bandmate Meg White are listed as plaintiffs in the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court.

White posted a copy of the first page of the lawsuit on Instagram and wrote, “This machine sues fascists,” a nod to Woody Guthrie’s famous slogan “This machine kills fascists.”

The Whites are seeking a jury trial in the Southern District of New York.

They are suing Trump; the campaign organization Trump for President 2024, Inc.; and the campaign’s deputy director of communications Margo Martin for the unauthorized use of the White Stripes’ iconic song “Seven Nation Army.”

The legal dispute arises from a video posted by Martin on social media last month, which featured Trump embarking on trips to Michigan and Wisconsin, set to the tune of “Seven Nation Army.”

In response to the video, White took to Instagram, calling Trump a “scum” and his team “fascists.”

At the time, White pledged to sue Trump “to add to your 5 thousand others.”

“Oh….Don’t even think about using my music you fascists,” White wrote on Instagram. “Law suit coming from my lawyers about this.”

White’s criticism follows a demand from the Swedish band Abba earlier this week for Trump to stop using their music, following the unauthorized use of their songs and video footage at a campaign event.

Other prominent artists who have objected to Trump or his team using their work include Céline Dion, Beyoncé, Johnny Marr of the Smiths, the family of the late soul legend Isaac Hayes, and the estate of the late Irish pop star Sinéad O’Connor.

White also blasted Trump over a recent controversy during his visit earlier this week to a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. According to an Army spokesperson on Thursday, an employee attempting to enforce rules against political activities on cemetery grounds was pushed aside in an altercation reportedly involving two members of Trump’s campaign staff.

“And as long as I’m here, a double fuck you DonOLD for insulting our nation’s veterans at Arlington you scum,” White wrote. “You should lose every military family’s vote immediately from that if ANYTHING makes sense anymore.”

In November, White removed his record label, Third Man Records, from what was then called Twitter after the company’s new CEO and right-wing polemicist Elon Musk restored Trump’s account.

“So you gave trump his twitter platform back. Absolutely disgusting, Elon,” White wrote. “That is officially an asshole move.”

In October 2019, White performed to a crowd of more than 5,000 Bernie Sanders supporters at his alma mater, Cass Technical High School in Detroit.

Jack White to reunite with former Hentchmen bandmates at Hamtramck Labor Day Festival

This year’s Hamtramck Labor Day Festival will culminate with a performance by local rock ’n’ roll heroes the Hentchmen, who will be joined by none other than former bandmate Jack White for a Monday evening headlining set.

That’s according to a press release sent by the festival Thursday evening, which states that the garage rock group’s “onetime and occasional bandmate Jack White will join them on stage for a few songs.”

It’s also in accordance with White’s unorthodox promotional tour for his surprise new album No Name, which has seen him and his new band hit small venues and festivals, sometimes with little advance notice — including his first-ever headlining show at Detroit’s Saint Andrew’s Hall earlier this month.

Other acts scheduled for the free festival include Detroit rappers Esham, Sada Baby, Bruiser Wolf, and Gmac Cash and Nashville rock band Be Your Own Pet on Saturday; Canadian rock band Sloan on Sunday; and local acts Double Winter, Loose Koozies, and Amino Acids on Monday.

The family-friendly festival also features carnival rides, a parade, International Big Time Pro Wrestling, a pierogi-eating contest, and a “canoe” race, where “representatives from the town’s many local bars compete in homemade three-wheeled vehicles that might generously be said to resemble canoes.”

“We’re so proud that our festival is still around, and free, and volunteer-run” says festival chairman Konrad Maziarz in a statement. “It’s a lot of work to put on but we can’t imagine any other way to celebrate all the weird and wonderful cultural and artistic achievements of Hamtramck. We’ve got an amazing food scene, so much great art and so many fantastic musicians this year. It’s really a showcase for the creative community here.”

White joined the Hentchmen on bass for their 1998 album Hentch-Forth, cheekily billed as “the Hentchmen with Jack White.” Little did anyone know White would go on to become a major player in rock music with his famously bass-less band the White Stripes, and White’s label Third Man Records reissued Hentch-Forth in 2017.

Jack White to play intimate Saint Andrew’s Hall gig

The roll-out for the latest Jack White record continues to be anything but usual.

After surprise releasing the album as an unmarked test pressing quietly given away for free to customers at his Third Man Records store last month, the rock star and his new band are embarking on a tour of small venues.

That includes an upcoming date at Detroit’s 1,000-person Saint Andrew’s Hall on Monday, Aug. 5.

Tickets for members of the Third Man Records “Vault” fan club go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday, followed by general on sale at noon. Non-Vault members can enter a lottery for a chance to get tickets at laylo.com/jackwhite/DETROIT.

Dubbed No Name, the new album will be officially released on Friday. Unlike White’s past solo albums, which have dabbled with country, jazz, and hip-hop sounds, it has more of a stripped-down, back-to-basics feel reminiscent of the Detroit garage rock scene he came up in with his former band the White Stripes.

For this tour, White has enlisted a new backing band made up other longtime members of the Detroit rock scene: Dominic Davis on bass backing vocals (who has been performing with White since he launched his solo career in 2012), Patrick Keeler (the Raconteurs, the Greenhornes) on drums, and Bobby Emmett (Sturgill Simpson, the Sights) on keys.

The tour has included a benefit show for the American Legion Hall in Nashville, as well as stops at the 40 Watt Club in Athens, Georgia and Terminal West in Atlanta, which all have capacities of under 1,000.

The last time White performed in his hometown of Detroit was as part of a star-studded concert to celebrate Ford Motor Co.’s rehab of the historic Michigan Central Station in June. In 2022, he sold-out two back-to-back shows at the Masonic Temple, which can hold some 4,650 fans.

(White’s nephew/Third Man Records historian/former Metro Times contributor Ben Blackwell tells us White has never played at Saint Andrew’s in any of his main musical projects, though he performed there in the ’90s as part of the country band Goober and the Peas. He also joined the Hentchmen on bass for a couple of songs on July 25, 1998. Thank you, Ben!)

A lesson from André 3000: embrace your weird

André 3000 came out of retirement to tour his surprise new ambient jazz album.

“I just made all that shit up,” a beanie- and overalls-clad André 3000 says after delivering a powerful speech of gibberish that sounds like he’s speaking in tongues.

He explains to the crowd gathered at the Masonic Cathedral Theatre for his New Blue Sun performance in Detroit that it’s a combination of every language you’ve ever heard and that sometimes it feels good to just make noise. In fact, weird noises are encouraged at this show.

André 3000 and his ensemble played three gigs in Detroit on his New Blue Sun tour, one at Cliff Bells on Thursday and two at the Masonic Temple on Friday. He and his backing band — comprised of Carlos Nino, Nate Mercereau, and Surya Botofasina — riffed off songs from the reclusive rapper’s surprise new instrumental album, released in November, playing some of the main melodies and freestyling the rest. New Blue Sun is an improvisational album anyway, so it made sense. Throughout the tour the band will end up playing new music every night.

The smoke machine works overtime to billow hazy streams across the stage in the dimly lit cathedral. A blue laser beams down onto André’s flute from the balcony as a chorus of ring lights glow like luminescent all-seeing eyes cutting through the darkness.

André changes flutes several times throughout the show, sometimes playing distorted notes that sound more like they’re coming from a keyboard. The most interesting thing happening onstage isn’t André himself, however; it’s the percussion coming from Carlos Nino, who uses mallets to play the cymbals like a gong. Gentle wind chimes and thunderous beats like a war drum fill the cathedral like a sound bath meditation.

The best way to enjoy the show is to close your eyes. The music allows you to settle into stillness and as the night progresses I notice the tension in my shoulders and legs before allowing the music to melt it away.

André invites the audience to join him in releasing whatever noises they feel like as he growls and purrs like a panther before playing “That Night In Hawaii When I Turned Into A Panther And Started Making These Low Register Purring Tones That I Couldn’t Control … Sh¥t Was Wild.” While there’s a bit of hesitation and no one quite lets themselves go completely, the crowd obliges with the occasional yell or “whoooo.” He tells us to take deep breaths, stand up, and stretch like an internal voice embodied.

In between songs, André gives short speeches, telling us how he began playing his flute in Los Angeles parks and met Nino in a grocery store, leading them to record New Blue Sun in his garage. He says that when he plays his flute in public, people from all cultures come up to him, because every culture has their own version of the ancient instrument.

“Whaddup doe,” he says. “I learned that yesterday.”

The Detroit crowd loves it.

The audience seems to be waiting for a climax but there isn’t one. Just four guys making it up as they go along like we’re all ultimately doing in this life. As the end of the night draws near underneath the crucifix hanging from the venue’s ceiling, frantic notes and screeching melodies start to feel like a horror movie soundtrack with the cathedral’s stained glass windows as a backdrop.

Appearing humble, he shouts out all the great music coming from Detroit, including the late new age jazz player Yusef Lateef.

“Tell Jack White we want to make some music with him,” André 3000 says before thanking the audience for allowing him to explore and leaving the stage.

Jack White Cast In Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers Of The Flower Moon’

Jack White is showing off his acting chops.

The musician is the latest addition to legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese’s next film “Killers of The Flower Moon”. Randall Poster revealed the casting choice when he appeared on Brian Koppelman’s “The Moment” podcast.

Jason Isbell had already been announced as part of the film, but to Koppelman’s surprise, the famous singer wouldn’t be performing music in the film.

“Yeah, he’s terrific in it. Jason Isbell, Jack White, uhh, oh, my god, who’s [that] famous blues harpist, older cat, it’s not Toots Thielemans — anyhow, there’s like four musicians in the movie that don’t play music,” said the music supervisor.

It won’t be White’s first time acting as he’s appeared in 2003’s “Cold Mountain” and 2007’s “Walk Hard”.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” is a Western crime drama which follows a series of murders in Oklahoma in the 1920s. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemons, Lily Gladstone and Brendan Fraser with a premiere set for the Cannes Film festival in 2023.
