Longtime news anchor Dave Lucas, whose work has been seen across the District’s ABC affiliate 7News, has announced that he will retire later this month.

Lucas is expected to continue his work on 7News’ 24/7 afternoon broadcasts through Friday, Nov. 22, when the station plans to produce a retirement send-off on 7News and 24/7 all day, according to a release from the outlet.

“Lucas is something of a D.C. area broadcast institution,” 7News said in a release. “As one of the original news anchors for NewsChannel 8, he has called the station his home since it went on the air 34 years ago. He is among the region’s most highly regarded broadcast journalists.”

Lucas’ career has spanned reports as a sports and health reporter, live interviews with newsmakers and coverage of some of the biggest stories in recent memory. He has been on the air broadcasting live during the 9/11 attacks on the Pentagon, the Capitol attack on Jan. 6, 2021, and multiple presidential elections.

In his 48 years as a journalist, he has been honored with an induction into the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Silver Circle, three regional Emmy Awards and a national Edward R. Morrow award.

“Dave and his wife Lisa are looking forward to their next adventure in Richmond, Va., where they’re moving to be closer to their children and a happily increasing number of grandchildren,” the release said.

‘There he was hanged from a locust tree’: Identity of 3 DC-area lynching victims revealed by Maryland commission – WTOP News

Montgomery County received a painful history lesson this weekend. On Saturday, the Maryland Lynching Truth and Reconciliation Commission held a public hearing to discuss the three documented lynchings that happened in the county between 1854 and 1933.

George Washington Peck of Poolesville, was reportedly found struggling with a white girl and accused of attempted rape before he was lynched in 1880.

“An angry white mob soon gathered, seizing Mr. Peck, forcing a noose around his neck and dragging him to the vacant lot across from the Poolesville Presbyterian Church. There he was hanged from a locust tree,” said Maya Davis, chair of the Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture.

She explained to visitors in attendance at the Universities at Shady Grove that, at the time, Montgomery County was a rural area consisting of small farms raising corn and tobacco. The population was about 25,000, a third of whom were Black.

Six months later, the county registered its 2nd lynching — that of John Diggs Dorsey who was a laborer living in Darnestown.

Accused of sexually assaulting his employer’s wife, Diggs Dorsey was taken into custody following a 2-day manhunt. But a white mob of 30-40 men showed up at the Rockville jail and grabbed Diggs Dorsey.

“They made the prisoner walk in shackles about a mile outside town on Route 28. There they hung him from the limb of a large cherry tree. In the morning, several hundred white people gathered around the body, cutting the rope into pieces for souvenirs,” Davis said.

The third lynching in Montgomery County occurred in 1896, following a vicious ax attack on a family in Gaithersburg. A stranger in town from Milledgeville, Georgia, named Sidney Randolph was taken into custody while walking along Muddy Branch Road. It was Independence Day.

“On July 4, a mass mob of white men dragged him from his cell in the Rockville jail, brutally beat him and hanged him from a tree just outside of town along Route 355,” Davis said.

The state commission was told there are no known descendants of Peck, Diggs Dorsey or Randolph.

“The culture and the legacy of lynching created an environment of racial terror and fear for a lot of individuals, not just though who are contemporaries of the lynching victims but of those who followed them: the descendants. It created intergenerational trauma that is not easy to escape,” said Teisha Dupree-Wilson, a history professor at Copping State University and member of the commission.

The next public commission meeting is schedule for Monday, Oct. 7, at 11:30 a.m. at Bowie State University. A public hearing is scheduled weeks later in Harford and Cecil counties on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 10 a.m. More information on previous and upcoming meetings is available online.

The state’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s work Saturday is an outgrowth of years of research. It was established in 2019 to investigate unlawful killings of African Americans by white mob violence throughout Maryland’s history.

“The commission researches cases of lynching throughout the state and holds public hearings in communities where lynchings took place to shine a light on the dark legacy of lynching in Maryland and its enduring impacts on the Black community and communities of color,” a release on the meeting said. “At the heart of the MLTRC’s mission is the pursuit of justice and healing for the victims of lynching and their descendants.”

  • Suspect indicted in DC park ‘bias-motivated’ pepper spray attacks acquitted on all charges – WTOP News

Suspect indicted in DC park ‘bias-motivated’ pepper spray attacks acquitted on all charges – WTOP News

A former Prince George’s County, Maryland, elementary school teacher who was arrested on assault charges in Virginia and indicted for allegedly attacking people with pepper spray in a D.C. park was found not guilty.

Years after Michael Thomas Pruden, 50, was hit with seven federal assault charges related to “bias-motivated assaults” on men from 2018 to 2021 in Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park, a jury of his peers in Washington D.C. acquitted him of all charges.

Initially, prosecutors argued before a grand jury that Pruden attacked victims because of their perceived sexual orientation, targeting a park known for cruising, or “a meeting place for men seeking consensual sex with other men,” according to charging documents.

The indictment identified a total of five victims who were assaulted during evening activities at the park in D.C., claiming Pruden pretended to be a member of law enforcement and attacked unsuspecting men.

“Before spraying the men, Pruden pretended to be a Park Police officer, shined a flashlight in the victims’ faces and gave the victims police-style directives,” the department said in a July 2022 press release.

Prosecutors also brought forth digital evidence from Pruden — “text or social media messages or profiles that reference ‘cruising,’ Meridian Hill Park or Malcolm X Park,” and social media activity on platforms like Jack’d and Grindr ahead of this week’s jury trial. Jurors began deliberation Thursday and reached their decision Friday afternoon.

Pruden’s acquittal comes more than two years after his arrest in Norfolk, Virginia, due in part to significant delays in the trial. Notable issues included changes in representation and motions to bifurcate the trial — separating the question of whether Pruden committed the offenses charged from deliberation on the reason being the victims’ espoused or assumed sexual orientation.

The jury’s decision also followed charges for attacks on two people at Daingerfield Island in Alexandria, Virginia, in 2021. The Alexandria case also concluded with Pruden being found not guilty verdict in both incidents.

The death of a baby killed in a Northwest D.C. overdose incident in May will be investigated as a homicide, police said.

The death of a baby killed in a Northwest D.C. overdose incident in May will be investigated as a homicide, police said.

Officials said they were called to an apartment in the 1400 block of Newton Street just after 11 a.m. on May 27 for a report of an unconscious infant.

First responders took the infant — 2-month-old Amiri Royal Bynum — to a local hospital where he died, according to police.

D.C.’s chief medical examiner determined on Aug. 26 that fentanyl intoxication was the reason Bynum died. His death was ruled a homicide.

Officials haven’t offered any information about possible suspects in the homicide investigation.

Police asked anyone with information about the incident to call them at 202-727-9099. They’ve also offered a reward of up to $25,000, which will help arrest and convict a suspect.

Washington, D.C., officials have announced a sentence for a 42-year-old woman found guilty of sexually abusing an 8-year-old child in 2015 and 2016.

Washington, D.C., officials have announced a sentence for a 42-year-old woman found guilty of sexually abusing an 8-year-old child in 2015 and 2016.

Griselda Martinez-Moz, of Maryland, was sentenced to two decades in prison — 10 years for each first-degree child sexual abuse charge — according to a Friday news release from U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves and D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith.

“Upon her release, Martinez-Moz will be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of her life,” the statement said.

Martinez-Moz was found guilty in March following a seven-day trial in D.C. Superior Court. During the trial, evidence and testimony presented showed Martinez-Moz subjected the unidentified child “on multiple occasions” to “sexual acts.”

A man is dead and seven other people were wounded following Sunday night gunfire in East Baltimore, Maryland, police said.

The shooting happened in the 1300 block of North Spring Street, near Caroline and Hoffman Park, just after 8 p.m.

Baltimore Police Department Commissioner Richard Worley said multiple people opened fire at a gathering near the scene of the shooting, killing a 36-year-old man.

“Once on scene, officers located multiple male victims and one female victim suffering from gunshot wounds. At this time, we have eight confirmed victims,” he said.

Officials said victims’ ages ranged from 22 to 45 and all were taken to hospitals in various conditions, including critical. Suspects were not identified, but Worley said multiple firearms were recovered in the ongoing investigation.

“We got the victims to the fire department, got the victims to the hospital. Probably saved a few lives by getting in there so quickly,” he told reporters at a Sunday night news conference. “But we’ve got a lot of evidence, and we’re looking for a lot of video.”

Faith Leach, the city’s chief administrative officer, said Mayor Brandon Scott’s office would begin work on a community neighborhood stabilization initiative in the days ahead.

“It is not lost on me the impact of an incident like this on our communities in the days, weeks and even the months ahead,” she said. “We will be tasked with working with this community to heal from the trauma of this evening’s event.”

Leach also said the mayor’s office would be reaching to members of the community who experienced the mass shooting.

“We will be here in the immediate aftermath of this incident, but we will also be here for the long term to address your challenges, your needs, and to also help the community heal,” Leach said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Baltimore Police Department at 443-902-4824.

  • Severe storms bring heavy winds, flooding to DC area Sunday – WTOP News

Severe storms bring heavy winds, flooding to DC area Sunday – WTOP News

There is a possibility for severe thunderstorms, gusty winds, heavy rain and even a few isolated tornadoes for the District, Maryland and Virginia into Sunday evening. Here’s what you need to know.

Severe thunderstorms, gusty winds, heavy rain put portions of the District, Maryland and Virginia under warnings throughout Sunday evening. Here’s what you need to know.

    • Flood Warnings remain in effect for Anne Arundel, Howard and Baltimore Counties in Maryland through 5:15 a.m.
    • Flash Flood Warnings remain

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch, as well as a flash flood warnings for portions of the D.C. and Baltimore metro areas through 10 p.m. Sunday night. Ongoing Flash Flood Warnings impacting the region were cancelled just before 11 p.m.

The NWS also issued a special marine warning for the Patapsco River in Maryland, while portions of Ellicott City, Maryland, underwent significant challenges along flooding roadways.

“Showers and thunderstorms will continue for a couple of more hours, and there will be a risk of gusty winds and heavy rain,” WTOP Meteorologist Mike Stinneford said.

Storms around the region are expected to taper off and end after midnight as fog begins to develop around some areas.

Monday shows signs of bringing wet, although not as severe, conditions through the District, Maryland and Virginia as a cold front enters the region, Stinneford said. However, the rest of the workweek is looks to be not so drab.

“Want some good news? Beautiful weather is coming our way Tuesday through Thursday with pleasant temperatures and low humidity,” he said.

    Ellicott City sees severe flooding

Significant amounts of standing water impacted major roadways between Baltimore and the District, according to WTOP’s Joe Fox. But some of the worst impacts were felt along Ellicott City roadways.

“Most of our issues have resolved themselves along major roadways,” Fox said, adding that while lane closures were ebbing, “I would still stay away from (Historic) Ellicott City.”

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball said that the flooding that hit the city brought three inches of rainfall to Howard County in a short period of time and limited flooding, but no business appeared to see flooding as of Sunday evening.

Ball said that was due in part to planning and preemptive responses from the county’s emergency management office.

“The Historic Ellicott City Outdoor Tone Alert system was activated at 9:48 p.m., notifying residents of the Flash Flood Warning and directing people in the vicinity of Historic Ellicott City to seek higher ground,” Ball said in a statement.

After the alert was activated again at 10 p.m., county power outages rose, reaching 1,280 by 11 p.m.

Ball said his office plans to continue monitoring the remaining impacts of the storm over the coming hours and days.

“While we remain vigilant, these storm events underscore the importance of our ongoing impactful investments in flood mitigation and prevention,” Ball said. “While we still have much to do, we continue to make tangible and visible progress for our community.”

‘My first example of a public servant’: DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, community leaders mourn death of Joe Bowser – WTOP News

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said she’s heartbroken about the passing of her father, Joe Bowser, who died Friday. He was 88 years old.

In a statement on his death, Mayor Bowser said that she owes her career in public service to her father.

“For 52 years, my dad has been at my side — guiding me, cheering for me, loving me,” Mayor Bowser said. “He was the first person to take me to a community meeting. The first person to teach me that if something needs to be fixed, then step up and fix it — and finish any job you start.

Mayor Bowser called her father “bold” and “uncompromising” when it came to doing what’s right: “My first example of a public servant. The person — along with my mom — to show me unconditional love,” the mayor wrote of her father.

The 88-year-old held the bible for Mayor Bowser when she was first sworn into office, a favor that she returned when swearing her father into service as an officer in the North Michigan Park Civic Association.

“That was what it meant to walk in Joe Bowser’s footsteps — always knowing he was there, always pushing me to keep up,” Bowser wrote.

Ward 7 Councilmember Vincent Gray was among those who sent condolences to the Bowser family Saturday, encouraging others to help honor the life and legacy of Joe Bowser.

“We can honor Joe Bowser’s life by emulating his endeavors to empower people, build stronger neighborhoods, and especially by holding those we love close,” Gray said.

D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb said that Joe Bowser “was a dedicated community leader and advocate for all Washingtonians.”

“His presence will be sorely missed in Ward 5 and across the District,” Schwalb added.

“God blessed me and Miranda with you Dad. I’m heartbroken. I know that you will continue to guide me, and I will work every day to make you and mom proud. There will never be another Joe Bowser,” Mayor Bowser wrote. “You will be missed.”

Southern Maryland child dead after bounce house went airborne with kids inside – WTOP News

A 5-year-old boy from La Plata, Maryland, is dead after a bounce house in Waldorf went airborne while children were playing inside, officials said.

A 5-year-old boy from La Plata, Maryland, is dead after a bounce house at the Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf was blown into the air while children were playing inside Friday night, officials said.

First responders from Charles County were called after 9:20 p.m. while kids were playing in a moon bounce house at the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs baseball game.

A spokeswoman for the county said a wind gust blue the moon bounce anywhere from 15 to 20 feet high while an unknown number of kids were playing inside, “causing children to fall before it landed on the playing field.”

“Charles County EMS personnel, who were already stationed at the stadium for the game, along with trainers from the baseball team and several Volunteer first responders who were in attendance, swiftly began patient care within minutes of the incident,” the county said in a news release Saturday.

The county said the 5-year-old boy was critically injured in the incident. He was later pronounced dead after being flown to Children’s National Hospital in D.C.

A second child was also injured when the moon bounce went airborne but is expected to survive.

“We extend our deepest empathy to the children and their families during this difficult time. We thank our EMS team and the Maryland State Police for their swift actions to ensure the children received immediate care,” Charles County Government Commissioner President Reuben B. Collins II said in a statement.

The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs canceled Saturday night’s game following the moon bounce incident. The team also said it was “offering counseling and support to families, players, and fans who attended” Friday night’s game.

“Our entire organization shares our condolences with the family mourning the loss of a child, and concern for the child who was injured,” said Courtney Knichel, the team’s general manager. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them all.”

“All of a sudden, I saw the bounce house come flying through the air,” said Marie Ragano, who was in the stadium for the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs game, attending a “Faith and Family Night” event.

From her view near and along the third baseline, she said the bounce house appeared to flip on the right field, tossing something out of the house and onto the field.

“As it came flying through the air, I saw something fly out of it. But I didn’t know if it was a child or not until I saw both teams’ players go running out into right field,” Ragano told WTOP.

Ragano said her family left about 20 minutes after people realized that at least one child was hurt, telling WTOP that she just wanted to get out of the way so emergency services could aid the injured kids.

“I’m really sad,” she said holding back tears. “That a child’s out there playing … something like that happens. It’s just so sad.”

“We go to carnivals and stuff. You always wonder … is everything put together correctly?,” Ragano said. “You see these bounce houses flying through the air all the time on the news, so I’m not quite sure why this wasn’t anchored better.”

‘Shocking’: Woman dies after being hit by falling tree limb in DC park – WTOP News

Woman dies after being hit by falling tree limb in DC park

A woman died after being struck by a large limb that fell from a seemingly healthy tree in a park in D.C.’s Capitol Hill neighborhood on Wednesday morning.

D.C. Fire and EMS said they started receiving reports of a woman trapped under a tree at Garfield Park in Southeast just before 7:30 a.m.

The woman, who has not been publicly identified, was reportedly out walking her dog when she was struck by the large falling limb from a swamp white oak tree, which left her trapped underneath. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The park is owned by D.C. and trees there are maintained by the D.C. Department of Transportation.

A DDOT official said the 100-year-old tree was last inspected in 2022 and rated “good” on a five-point scale from “excellent” to “dead.”

“This is essentially an unforeseeable event,” said Earl Eutsler, associate director for the urban forestry division at DDOT. “The tree has been professionally inspected, proactively maintained, and the tree gave no indication — no outward indication — that this was even a remote possibility.”

He said it’s too soon to say what caused the solid limb to fall from a seemingly healthy tree and, in fact, the department may never know, he said.

“We don’t know conclusively. This is a healthy limb … attached to a healthy tree that abruptly, tragically and suddenly failed this morning,” he said.

The limb did not appear to show any obvious signs of decay.

“It’s fully solid. It’s again what makes it so shocking and tragic,” said Eutsler, who added, “I’ve worked for DDOT for nearly 21 years, and have never seen something quite like this with one of the trees under our management.

Arborists were out Wednesday inspecting the tree and then began removing it.

Sharon Kershbaum, the acting DDOT director, said the tree was being removed because the tree was unbalanced after losing the large limb.

“It’s not that there’s any smoking gun with it,” she told reporters. “It’s just that now it poses a hazard because of the big limb missing.”

    Neighbors expressed shock.

“Freak accident — it feels like to me,” said Christine Cedar. “I always see the city out here checking trees and marking them and clearing limbs.”

She said she never thought about the risk of falling trees on her walk through the neighborhood before. “I will now,” she said.

Loudoun Co. man charged in yearslong $20 million investment scam – WTOP News

Prosecutors announced the indictment of an Aldie, Virginia, man for his alleged part in a multiyear lending scam that defrauded dozens of investors in Maryland, Virginia and other jurisdictions.

Prosecutors announced the indictment of an Aldie, Virginia, man for his alleged part in a multiyear lending scam that defrauded dozens of investors in Maryland, Virginia and other jurisdictions.

A federal grand jury indicted 46-year-old Babu Ramaraj on charges of wire fraud and unlawful monetary transactions in late June, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Ramaraj and his wife own DAB Inspection and Consulting Services, a home contractor that does patio and deck projects, according to court documents.

Ramaraj allegedly told investors that the small, modestly performing business nabbed profitable contracts with government agencies including the Federal Aviation Administration, Virginia Department of Transportation and more.

He also reportedly told investors his business was, “a joint venture partner on a Washington DC Water Clean Rivers Project” that collectively netted “tens of millions of dollars each” for “engineering inspection work on huge infrastructure projects.”

Officials argued that Ramaraj claimed a large upfront bond payment was necessary to secure these jobs, but the business was not able to obtain bank financing because DAB was too new and needed money faster than a bank could feasibly provide.

From January 2020 to May 2024, Ramaraj reportedly pitched loans to investors, “including members of his Loudoun County cricket league,” at a high interest rate.

“Using money from later investors, Ramaraj allegedly paid initial investors the promised returns to entice them to continue investing and to recruit other friends and family to invest,” the news release stated.

To convince investors that his scam was real, Ramaraj allegedly supplied falsified contract award letters, invoices, DAB financial records and more.

Once he got the money, prosecutors argue that he went on a spending spree of sorts.

Instead of paying for the bonds as promised, Ramaraj allegedly moved the money into brokerage accounts that belonged to him and his wife so they could “engage in securities trades.”

Prosecutors said that DAB garnered “more than $20 million in aggregate” utilizing this tactic, wiring over $1 million to accounts in India under his wife’s name. The indictment also claims Ramaraj used money to purchase several automobiles, obtain real properties and make other payments to fund his lifestyle.

“If convicted, Ramaraj faces up to 20 years in prison for each count of wire fraud and up to 10 years in prison for each count of unlawful monetary transactions,” the Justice Department stated.

The charges follow federal complaints filed against Ramaraj by residents in North Carolina and Georgia. North Carolina complainants accused him of scamming them out of approximately $400,000 from July 2022 to July 2023, while Georgia residents accused Ramaraj of tricking them out of $200,000.

Ramaraj is set to appear in federal court for his arraignment on July 12.

Officials began an initial investigation on June 7, after receiving eight reports of illness connected with the brand’s chocolate bars. Those cases grew to include one unidentified Marylander by June 18, more than a week before the Santa Ana, California-based Prophet Premium Blends, issued a recall for the product.

“As of July 1, 2024, a total of 48 illnesses have been reported from 24 states,” the FDA said in a July 2 update.

Agency officials said that recalled products were sold online and in person at location across the U.S., including retails stores, smoke/vape shops and stores that sell hemp-derived products like CBD or delta-8 THC.

The ingredient muscimol, which is found in some types of mushrooms, is believed to be linked with symptoms such as seizures, agitation, involuntary muscle contractions, loss of consciousness, confusion, sleepiness, nausea and vomiting, abnormal heart rates, and hyper/hypotension, reported by people who got sick.

FDA investigators said they believe that a death may be related to consumption of one of the products, but the FDA has yet to confirm the details of that report.

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, FDA and America’s Poison Center investigators continue to look into the reports, and encourage anyone with symptoms to reach out to their health provider or the Health Resources & Services Administration Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

  • Former Virginia Navy officer, psychologist sentenced to 14 years in attempted coercion of minor – WTOP News

Former Virginia Navy officer, psychologist sentenced to 14 years in attempted coercion of minor – WTOP News

Virginia prosecutors obtained a 14-year prison sentence Friday for a U.S. Navy officer found guilty of attempted sexual coercion of a minor while serving as a psychologist in Norfolk, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Virginia prosecutors obtained a 14-year prison sentence Friday for a U.S. Navy officer found guilty of attempted sexual coercion of a minor while serving as a psychologist in Norfolk, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.

The incident began when 34-year-old Michael Widroff, a former Navy psychologist assigned to the USS Gerald R. Ford in Norfolk, started a conversation on the Whisper social media platform. The post included a picture of a male wearing a Navy Service Dress White uniform and “accompanying text indicating that he wished to engage in fraternization or other violations of military law,” according to the release.

“In the military context, fraternization is improper relationships between officers and enlisted personnel, including, as stated by Widroff, ‘when two people who aren’t supposed to date-hook up do,’” prosecutors said.

An undercover member of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, posing as a 14-year-old girl, responded to Widroff’s post.

The conversation became sexual as Widroff said he “thought the girl was ‘hot’” and moved their communications to Snapchat.

“Widroff instructed the girl on how to masturbate and explained that he wished to engage in numerous sexual acts when they met,” the department said.

Court documents showed that Widroff “described to the child, in graphic detail, numerous sexual acts in which he wanted them to engage.” Eventually, he requested “sexy” and “nude photos” of the child along with explicit recordings.

Afterward, Widroff tried to arrange an in-person meeting at the teen’s home. Anxious about being seen, prosecutors said that Widroff planned to enter the home through a back door.

He was arrested on June 7 at a traffic stop in the neighborhood where he planned to meet the 14-year-old. As officers pulled him over, he deleted Snapchat from his phone, prosecutors said.

Widroff plead guilty to charges on Oct. 12.

Stumpy, DC’s famous cherry blossom tree, dead at 25 – WTOP News

Stumpy, a well-known cherry blossom tree at D.C.’s Tidal Basin, has died at the estimated age of 25, the National Park Service said.

Stumpy, a crowd-favorite cherry blossom tree at D.C.’s Tidal Basin, has died at the estimated age of 25. It was the victim of failing seawalls requiring repair, according to a statement from the National Park Service.

Stumpy’s exact age had been unknown for years due to a lack of countable rings inside its hollowed trunk.

As hollow as his stump may have been, many people said Stumpy was a tiny cherry blossom tree with a whole lot of heart — and one with a whole lot of fans. Stumpy was slight yet iconic, capturing the hearts of D.C. residents and tourists who were all rooting for the little tree through its final moments.

Born and raised in the tough waters of the Tidal Basin, Stumpy was known amongst its arboreal peers as a sweetheart and even a class clown. It especially loved to take photos with visitors, never allowing its mounting health concerns to compromise its flowery smile.

During his last bloom, visitors came to the Tidal Basin to share hopes and well wishes for the little cherry tree that could, encouraging the National Parks Service to #SaveStumpy any way it could.

Stumpy first stepped into the spotlight circa 2020, when it went viral on Reddit for being compared to one user’s love life.

Leading up to its death, it entered what tree doctors called a “mortality spiral” — dealing with old age, it also had sun scalding on its bark, advancing fungi, and lived in depleted and compacted soils.

Stumpy died on May 24; it was one of approximately 150 trees removed between the Thomas Jefferson Memorial and Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial.

Stumpy is survived by thousands of family members and friends in the U.S. and internationally, with many relatives in Japan.

After Stumpy’s loss, the National Park Service said 274 more cherry trees will be replanted in the area.

Arborists also grabbed clippings from Stumpy in the hopes of expanding its lineage and keeping the tilted titan of the Tidal Basin around for years to come. Those little ones will hopefully be propagated and grow up to be just as impactful as their Prunus parent.

  • GW University president, pro-Palestinian activists give conflicting accounts of protests – WTOP News

GW University president, pro-Palestinian activists give conflicting accounts of protests – WTOP News

In a statement, GWU’s president said current protests have been co-opted by individuals unaffiliated with the community and “do not have our community’s best interest in mind.”

GW’s president addresses on-campus protests as encampments reach their 12th day. WTOP’s Neal Augenstein reports.

Responding to the ongoing encampment of protesters at George Washington University over the Israel-Hamas war, the university president said the causes are important, but outside forces are stirring the conflict.

In a letter addressed to the GW University community Sunday, President Ellen Granberg stated: “It is clear that this is no longer a GW student demonstration,” adding that the protest “has been co-opted by individuals who are largely unaffiliated with our community and do not have our community’s best interest in mind.”

While stating, “There is a dire humanitarian crisis occurring in Gaza that must be addressed,” Granberg said what was happening at GW University — and other universities around the U.S. — was growing out of control.

“What is currently happening at GW is not a peaceful protest protected by the First Amendment or our university’s policies,” Granberg said. “The demonstration, like many around the country, has grown into what can only be classified as an illegal and potentially dangerous occupation of GW property.”

As point and case, Granberg pointed to the volatile situation that had arisen at GW University in the last week.

“When protesters overrun barriers established to protect the community, vandalize a university statue and flag, surround and intimidate GW students with antisemitic images and hateful rhetoric, chase people out of a public yard based on their perceived beliefs, and ignore, degrade, and push GW Police Officers and university maintenance staff, the protest ceases to be peaceful or productive. All of these things have happened at GW in the last five days,” she said.

Stating that GW campus police are only equipped to handle security during “normal university operations,” Granberg also said the university would continue to reach out to the D.C. police to help provide security and safety while the protests and encampments continue.

GW University students ‘remain steadfast for Gaza’

Ahead of Granberg’s statement, a joint news release from the Student Coalition for Palestine at GWU said that protestors would remain steadfast in their protest “despite repression from their genocidal university and state.”

“For nine days, GW President Ellen Granberg and her administration have persistently evaded requests to engage in an open line of communication with a student negotiation team representing the community inside our Liberated Zone,” the organization said.

“Despite repeated attempts from our negotiations team to schedule meetings with Granberg and her administration, GW has refused to cooperate.”

The group, which includes students from D.C.-area campuses, including American University, Georgetown University, Howard University, George Mason University, Gallaudet University and the University of Maryland’s College Park and Baltimore County locations, continues to push for divestments and disclosures at institutions across the region.

“This is a blatant commitment to perpetuating the genocide in Gaza,” the statement reads, “favoring the interests of zionist donors and politicians over the demands of the masses of students, staff and faculty at the encampment.”

University students also said the increasing surveillance and barricades erected around the encampment on April 26 were troubling moves from the administration. Moreover, the group said, the decision to suspend eight student protestors “denied them access to education, housing and meal plans.”

“Despite baseless claims of antisemitism meant to divert attention away from the genocide in Gaza, the only material harm that has been enacted against Jewish students has been at the hands of the administration,” the group said.

The students also said administrators were responsible for assaults and physical aggression around and near the protest space.

“This includes our own Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Christopher Alan Bracey physically assaulting a female Jewish student unprovoked during his fit of rage in the middle of the night at our encampment,” the organization said.

Both statements come days after GW University said a university flag was “illegally removed” by protesters and replaced with a Palestinian flag, a violation of D.C. law and university policy. As police intervened, officers were surrounded by a crowd yelling “hostile chants” and were forced to withdraw to prevent further escalation.

The day head is forecast to be cloudy with highs from the upper 60s to the middle 70s, according to 7News First Alert Meteorologist Mark Peña.

The National Weather Service said it expects Sunday to begin with rain and areas of drizzle, before showers and thunderstorms enter the evening and overnight forecast.

“Rain is likely, and it may become heavy at times, along with a few rumbles of thunder,” Peña said.

D.C.-area drivers can expect some of the showers and potential thunderstorms to shake up their drive as the wet weather brings up to half an inch of rain.

The National Weather Service issued a Coastal Flood Advisory for Arlington County and the City of Alexandria in Virginia, plus D.C. until 9 a.m. Sunday, with shoreline inundation expected “along portions of the seawall adjacent to Ohio Drive and the Hains Point Loop Road and near the Tidal Basin” in The District.

It noted the next high tide at the Washington Channel is at 6:09 a.m.

The next high tide at Alexandria is at 6:27 a.m.

Anyone looking to grab Cinco de Mayo food and drinks around the D.C. area should be prepared for a rainy evening celebration, especially if the evening ends with a free Lyft ride home.

“We have a rather active weather week ahead with daily rain chances — each particular day has its own share of showers and storms in the forecast, particularly in the afternoon,” Peña said.

7News First Alert Meteorologist Jordan Evans forecasts a lower risk for severe weather Monday despite the lingering clouds, although showers and thunderstorms could appear later that day.

  • Prince George’s County man sentenced to 7 years in prison for carjacking Lyft vehicle in DC – WTOP News

Prince George’s County man sentenced to 7 years in prison for carjacking Lyft vehicle in DC – WTOP News

Derrick Teeter, 32, of Oxon Hill was sentenced to seven years in prison on Friday for carjacking a Lyft vehicle in Southeast D.C. in 2022.

A Maryland man was sentenced to seven years in prison on Friday for carjacking a ride-share vehicle in Southeast D.C. in 2022.

Derrick Teeter, 32, of Oxon Hill, requested a Lyft ride on June 2, 2022, to go from the 3800 block of South Capitol Street to the 600 block of 46th Street, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for D.C.

While in the back seat of the vehicle on the passenger side, Teeter said he was feeling sick and asked the driver to pull over into a grassy area. After exiting the vehicle, prosecutors said that Teeter asked the driver for some water and tissue.

That’s when Teeter pushed the driver to the ground, jumped into the passenger seat and attempted to drive away, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for D.C.

“While lying on the ground, the victim grabbed the passenger’s door of his vehicle, yelling for the defendant to ‘stop,’” prosecutors said in a statement, adding that Teeter “kept driving and dragged the victim for a short distance.”

When the Lyft driver was able to get up, officials said the victim flagged down another driver, who called 911. The vehicle was recovered the following day.

Teeter request to be sentenced under the District’s Youth Rehabilitation Act, which allows alternative sentences for young defendants, was denied by the court.

A Clifton, Virginia, father said doctors told him his two youngest sons were experiencing symptoms of brain death after being rescued from fire at the family’s home on Wednesday. Now, parents Jamey and Reina Brice are “praying for a miracle.”

The boys — 3-year-old Zachariah and 6-year-old William — were unresponsive for 45 minutes, after being pulled from their burning home in Clifton and transported to the intensive care unit at a hospital, according to WTOP’s partners at 7News.

“Unfortunately tonight we didn’t get the outcome that we wanted,” Jamey said in a Facebook video posted online Saturday night.

He said that both boys were stable enough to be brought in for more extensive brain tests and both “did not show any signs of responsiveness.”

The family said prayers continue to be welcomed while Zachariah and William remain under ICU care.

“It is the darkest night we’ve ever faced in our marriage and it is definitely the most impossible situation we’ve ever faced together,” Jamey said.

  • Bomb threats reported at Planet Fitness locations in Northern Va. amid transgender controversy – WTOP News

Bomb threats reported at Planet Fitness locations in Northern Va. amid transgender controversy – WTOP News

These threats come amid criticism of the gym brand for its enforcement of a gender identity non-discrimination policy after a woman complained about the business in March.

Virginia officials spent a portion of Saturday evening evacuating Planet Fitness locations in the City of Alexandria and Prince William County as the business continues to navigate responses to transgender-inclusive restroom policies.

Alexandria police said they were investigating a bomb threat and had evacuated a Planet Fitness location in the 4000 block of Kenmore Avenue before 7:30 p.m.

“Officers have cleared the area as necessary during the search of the area,” the department said. So far, no injuries, damage or devices have been reported.

Officials in Prince William County responded to bomb threats at two locations — one located at Richmond Highway and another along Galveston Court — after 6 p.m. Saturday, according to a statement to WTOP.

A spokesperson said that the locations were searched and that no suspicious items were found. So far, police investigating both incidents have not shared details of the reported bomb threat with the public.

An investigation into the incidents is ongoing.

    Controversy for ‘Judgement Free’ gym

These threats come amid criticism of the gym brand for its enforcement of a gender identity non-discrimination policy after a woman complained about the business in March.

Challenges for the brand sparked when a woman identified as Patricia Silva shared photos of a person who she believed to be transgender using the women’s locker room.

“I’m not comfortable with him shaving in my bathroom,” Silva said in a video posted to Facebook after the incident.

Despite this claim, the person has not been publicly identified as a transgender woman or spoken out on the matter.

Nevertheless, this video was shared across social media, gaining traction on popular conservative accounts, including “Libs of TikTok” on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Planet Fitness responded to the photograph and complaint by revoking the woman’s membership in accordance with its policy, which says: “[A]ll members and team members may use Planet Fitness locker room facilities and programs based on their self-reported gender identity; these facilities include bathrooms, showers, and all other facilities separated by sex.”

This isn’t the first time Planet Fitness has responded to gender-based complaints by removing a member’s access to their gyms. In a 2015 incident, the “Judgment Free” brand officially revoked a woman’s membership after a reported complaint of transgender women utilizing the rest areas that aligned with their gender identity.

Some analysts have highlighted the incident and Silva’s efforts to spread awareness of the policy, encouraging people to cancel their memberships and boycott the brand. Occasionally, these calls have harkened back to protests against Bud Light after the brand sent promotional materials to transgender content creator Dylan Mulvaney.

In the days after this controversy began, Planet Fitness stocks reportedly tumbled by some $400 million.

Others, including the nonprofit Media Matters, have highlighted the protest as a cause of increasing bomb threats for the gym chain amid a rise in violence against trans-identifying people across the United States.
