  • Burroughs Girls Soccer Turns It Up Late in Win Over Burbank

    [ad_1]

The Burbank High girls’ soccer team did not make it easy for visiting Burroughs Tuesday when the two sides hooked up in the regular season finale.

Just a goal separated the two after one half of play. But the Bears got rolling in the second half and ended up with a 5-0 victory.

“It was a little slow start. I asked them to settle down a bit and they started controlling the ball a little better,” Burroughs coach Robert Sanchez said.

Burroughs (9-8-5 overall, 7-4-3 in league) didn’t get on the board until the 21st minute when Samantha Sizemore was able to slip past the Burbank defense and put the ball past goalie Karine Gadyan.

“In the first half we held them down. We focused on controlling the middle and playing out of the middle and holding them and disrupting their rhythm,” Burbank midfielder Jocelyn Morinaga said.

Burbank (11-9-1 overall, 6-8 in league) remained tough and nearly drew level in the 27th minute as a header by Emily Taghon off a corner kick went just over the crossbar.

The Bulldogs had another solid opportunity in the 45th minute as Sofia Martinez got in behind the Bears defense and had a fine scoring chance only to see her shot blocked by a diving save from Sydney Evans.

Burroughs seemed to get the momentum back in the 49th minute when Geneva Kiefer scored directly off a corner kick from Isabella Estrada to make it 2-0.

The Bears scored once again from a corner kick in the 59th minute. This time it was Estrada finding Sizemore.

Two minutes later Sizemore recorded a hat trick as she picked up a loose ball that deflected off of Gadyan from a shot by Estrada.

Estrada scored a goal of her own in the 66th minute as she fired a long shot into the right corner of the Burbank goal.

Burroughs finishes the season in fourth place in the Pacific League and is expected to be selected for the CIF Southern Section playoffs. The pairings will be released Saturday.

  • Burroughs Girls Soccer Comes Up Short Against Muir

    [ad_1]

It was Burroughs High’s home game, but clearly it was a girls’ soccer match that meant far more to Muir than it did to Burroughs.

Just two years removed from breaking a 156-game Pacific League winless streak, a victory for the visiting Mustangs would mean one step closer to a league title, something few could have imagined just a few years.

Having defeated the other two Pacific League powers of Crescenta Valley and Arcadia earlier in the week, Muir completed the trifecta Saturday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over Burroughs.

Muir (17-2-4 overall, 10-0-3) now needs just a victory over Pasadena to claim a share of the Pacific League title. Crescenta Valley remains tied with the Mustangs on points. However, the Mustangs defeated the Falcons both times in head-to-head play.

“Honestly, it is so heart warming that some of my teammates have through so much with the forest and losing their homes and they still came out and we’ve together for this goal,” said Muir’s Shelby Gulley, who scored the only goal of the match in the 20th minute.

Burroughs (8-8-5 overall, 6-4-3 in league) had more goal-scoring opportunities than the Mustangs, but they were unable to get one past Muir’s Emily Goldorazena.

“They (Muir) did a good job of playing the counter. They just caught us off guard on that one play,” Burroughs coach Robert Sanchez said. “We definitely had more chances. The girls played as hard as they could and they tried their best, so I can’t fault them for that.”

Burroughs nearly scored in the first minute of the match as Julia Barton fired a left-footed shot inside the box that Goldorazena made a diving save on.

The Bears had another fine opportunity in the 19th minute when Jasmine Varela came down the left wing and put in a fine cross to Isabella Estrada, who directed it with her head just barely over the top right cross bar.
Less than a minute later Muir scored its goal.
“I know I have speed and I put it to use,” said Gulley. “I pushed the ball past both defenders. The ball was initially on my left, so I was just like put it away, put it away. Those were the thoughts in my head.”
Gulley’s left-footed shot beat Burroughs goalie Sydney Evans who had come out to make a save.

Barton had a shot for Burroughs in the 32nd minute, but her attempt from the right side of the pitch missed the left corner of the goal.

Goldorazena had a save on a free kick from Samantha Sizemore in the 53rd minute.

Burroughs appeared to have Muir on its heels midway through the second half.
In the 55th minute, Sizemore passed to Geneva Kiefer who clearly was trying to angle the ball around the Muir goalkeeper, who had come out to cut off the angle.

But her left-footed shot went just wide of the goal.

Burroughs had one last chance in the 80th minute on a free kick that initially bounced off of Goldorazena, who later jumped on the loose ball.

Burroughs will play at Burbank on Tuesday in the regular season finale. Muir will host Pasadena, also on Tuesday.

  • Burroughs Girls Soccer Blanked By Crescenta Valley

    [ad_1]

    By Rick Assad

Playing with intensity, precision, poise and determination, the Burroughs High girls’ soccer team still failed to score in a Pacific League match against Crescenta Valley.

This doesn’t mean the Bears didn’t have several opportunities to put the ball in the hole, they did, but a goal from 40 yards by junior Adrianna Dominguez in the 52nd minute proved to be the difference as it handed the visiting Falcons a 1-0 decision at Memorial Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Burroughs (5-7-5 and 3-3-3 in league) didn’t get a shot on goal until the 25th minute by senior striker/midfielder/defender Samantha Sizemore, who played a whale of a game as did several others namely junior fullback Geneva Kiefer and senior goalkeeper Sydney Evans, who allowed only one ball to slip past her but otherwise played extremely well.

Robert Sanchez is the Burroughs head coach and had a feeling the match would be close.

“I saw what we expected of that game with respect to style of play. We knew they were going to play a lot of balls through and over the back line,” he explained. “Our defenders were diligent in reading the play and keeping Crescenta Valley from controlling the ball in our defensive third. [Sophomore] Syana [Ford], [sophomore] Margarita [Varela], [junior] Jasmin [Varela], [senior] Catarina [Sandoval] and [junior] Isabella [Estrada] get credit for that.”

Sizemore had a shot in the 33rd minute but it didn’t find the back of the net.

“The rest of the team, including Geneva and Samantha, created a number of chances, but Crescenta Valley’s key center back was too effective at man marking Samantha,” Sanchez said. “It is difficult for anyone to remain focused in the grind of that type of match and also anticipate a sudden 40-yard shot from midfield. I tip my hat to that goal.”

Sizemore added an attempt in the 51st minute and fullback Estrada launched one in the 43rd minute.

Sizemore used her speed and quickness to collect another kick, and this one came in the 58th minute.

Kiefer, who played wide receiver on the inaugural flag football team and is very fast, had a kick in the 60th minute.

Another attempt occurred in the extra by Burroughs midfielder Jasmin Varela.

The Falcons used a strong frontal attack, and they had a kick by sophomore Kaylee Ko in the 20th minute.

Dominguez added an attempt in the 21st minute and senior Scarlett Scott chimed in with a header in the 22nd minute.

One minute later, Dominguez tossed in a kick, but it wasn’t successful.

In the 29th minute, Scott collected another attempt and sophomore Liana Baghdasarian had a kick in the 34th minute for the Falcons.

Ko found time to have a kick in the 35th minute and Crescenta Valley had the final kick of the opening half as neither team scored.

Sophomore Sabrina Lee had a kick in the 41st minute for the Falcons and six minutes later Baghdasarian had an attempt while teammate, junior Zoe Loppnow tossed in a 45-yard free kick in the 49th minute.

Crescenta Valley (13-4-2 and 8-1 in league) had a kick in the 54th minute and Falcon senior Kira Lee had a blast in the 64th minute.

Dominguez had three straight kicks, and they took place in the 66th minute, the 70th minute and then a corner kick in the 78th minute.

“This whole season has been a test of physical and mental stamina, and our players and team are holding up well,” Sanchez stated. “Every loss for us in league has been taken from us with one goal, so I feel that with a little more good fortune, we could have been much close to the top of the table than we are.”

The Bears have done much better in league action with victories versus visiting Hoover 11-0, at Glendale 6-0 and home versus Burbank 6-1.

Burroughs has walked away tied against Pasadena 0-0, at Muir 1-1 and at Pasadena 1-1 and emerged with a 1-0 victory against host Sierra Canyon.

  • Girls Soccer Preview: Local Teams Have Mix of Young, Veteran Talent

    [ad_1]

Enthusiasm is certainly there for the three local girls’ soccer teams as the begin a new season. Burroughs is a returning playoff participant. Burbank and Providence hope to move up into a position to qualify for the postseason.

    Burroughs

The Bears have a problem that is a good one to have, too many players who play year-round in club soccer. Last season Burroughs went 9-5-4 overall and 5-1-2 in league.

Second-year head coach Robert Sanchez, who was previously a longtime assistant, said his varsity and junior varsity squads are filled with club players.

“This season we look to build on the dynamics we developed last season by challenging ourselves with competitions against high-performing teams,” Sanchez said. “We plan to challenge for a playoff bid and hope to make a run deep into February; I would not be averse to playing in the month of March.”

Burroughs has just five seniors on this season’s roster. But two of them are players who should play at the next level in striker Samantha Sizemore and goalie Sydney Evans.

Also returning are senior defenders Nevaeh Diaz and Catarina Sandoval. Midfielder Hailey De Leon is the other returning senior.

Junior midfielders Jasmin Varela, Geneva Kiefer and junior defender Isabella Estrada are the designated team captains.

Burroughs will have six sophomores on the varsity, five of which return. Margarita Varela and Syana Ford are defenders. Maya Pelaez is a returning midfielder and Alexandra McMenanmin, Julia Barton and Kayla Duran are strikers.

The Bears will also have two freshmen in midfielder Charlotte Pangman and freshman defender Nadia McConnell, who will be the backup goalie.

    Burbank

Burbank High showed great strides over the season, losing just 2-0 to Burroughs in the regular season finale. The Bulldogs, who were 6-6-2 overall and 2-5 in league, return nine players to the varsity squad, led by junior captains Sophia Leon and Jocelyn Morinaga and senior Deliliah Williams.

Leon and Morinaga figure to be the key pieces in the midfield.

Williams anchors a veteran defense that has lots of seniors. Julia Smith, Rachel Dias and Valerie Barragan are all returning seniors who will be in the back with Williams.

Seniors Allison Rubio and Emily Taghon are both varsity returners who figure to hold down the other midfield spots.

Junior Karine Gadyan takes over as the starting goalie taking over the graduated Natalia Cortez.

Junior Elle Poris, a returning varsity player, figures to be one of the top options in the attack.

Burbank’s depth gets very young, as seven freshmen are also on the varsity.

Ariana Vishria, Skylar Kramer, Lauren Mallari and Chloe Boyadzhyan are all freshmen defenders who will understudies to the group of seniors.

Freshmen Hailey Kim and Metzli Ortega will get playing time in the midfield.

Freshman Sofia Martinez will compete for playing time in the attack.

“After a challenging 2024–25 campaign, the Burbank High School girls’ soccer team is setting its sights on a major rebound this winter. With a large group of returning players and renewed energy in training, the Bulldogs are confident that this will be a season of progress and results,” Burbank coach Dennis Leon said.

    Providence

The Pioneers return 11 players from last season’s team that finished 4-9-1 overall and 0-6 in the difficult Prep League. Providence is back in the Liberty League and that should help things.

Returning is senior goalie Llew Doherty, who is one of two seniors on the team. The other senior is Nicole Ospital, who will help out in the attack.

Junior Gio Garcia-Ribeiro will anchor the defensive line. She will be joined by sophomore Victoria Valenzuela and several rookies in freshmen Kylie Van Barneveld, Evie Boyd, Parker Vasquez and Izabella Berggren-Brooks.

The midfield will feature juniors Natalie Khatchadourian, Paige Fairweather, Valeria Franco and Mikaylah Malong. Sophomore Emmie Wilcox will also competing for playing time along with freshmen Kamila Marroquin-Velasquez, Valentina Villavicencio and Ana Huezo.

In the attack, the Pioneers will have juniors Olivia Sacchetto, Jett Belson, Emma Valera along with freshmen Mila Bary and Jackie Solis.

“We have some excellent players returning this year as well as some excellent incoming freshmen,” first-year coach Brie Childers said. “Our coaching priority is building a culture that fuels everyone to play their best and build a team that relies on each other and supports each other.”

    By Rick Assad

Thirty-one points were hung by the Burroughs High girls’ flag football team in the second half and proved the difference Thursday afternoon against host Los Altos in a nonleague game.

The Bears held a 13-6 lead at the intermission and routed the Conquerors 44-20.

Senior quarterback Karisma Mendez, who also toils at wide receiver and linebacker, delivered five scoring passes and three came in the second half.

Keith Knoop is the Burroughs athletic director and the flag football head coach and was pleased his team played well.

“What stood out for me was the second half,” he said. “We executed and competed.”

The Conquerors took an early 6-0 on the second play of the game after a 71-yard pass from quarterback Jasmine Campos to wide receiver Sophie Sedano with 10:59 left in the first period.

The pass was bobbled a few times before Sedano controlled it and the short toss was turned into a long score.

Now it was Mendez’s turn to shine as the senior field general delivered a 33-yard scoring strike to junior wide receiver/defensive back Lily Indefenzo on the seventh play of the march as 3:25 remained in the same frame.

The one-point conversion run by Mendez was successful as the Bears (5-8) led 7-6.

Early in the second quarter, Mendez unloaded a 25-yard toss to junior wide receiver Krystal Villalta, who also plays defensive back, for a 13-6 lead on the fifth play of the excursion.

Burroughs scored on three possessions in the third frame as Mendez tossed a 16-yard throw to junior wide receiver Isabella Estrada with 8:40 left, capping the six-play drive.

When Mendez hit Estrada, who also plays defensive back, for the one-point conversion pass, it made the score 20-6.

Mendez sent her fourth scoring pass to junior center/linebacker R’ae Boulanger, who grabbed an 11-yard pass on the fourth play of the march and 4:50 left on the clock for a 26-6 advantage.

The score became 32-13 on one play when Mendez nailed Estrada with a short pass but the junior raced 70 yards as 52 seconds remained in the period.

Senior Alyssa Prachasaisoradej delivered two scores as the senior quarterback/wide receiver/defensive back had a 28-yard run and 11:16 left on the clock in the fourth period for a 38-13 lead and added a 64-yard dash with 3:05 left in the game for a 24-point lead.

The Conquerors (1-8) sliced the Bears’ margin to 26-13 on the sixth play after a three-yard pass from Campos with 1:15 remaining in the third period.

Makayla Salcedo added a seven-yard scoring jaunt with 4:20 on the clock in the fourth quarter that narrowed the margin to 38-20, highlighting the 10-play drive.

  • Burroughs Girls Flag Football Blanked By Notre Dame

    By Rick Assad

In a nonleague girls’ flag football game for Burroughs High, the Bears had possession of the ball eight times, failed to cross the goal line and lost to visiting Notre Dame 24-0 on Friday afternoon.

Neither team scored in the first quarter at Memorial Field, but the Knights found the end zone with a three-play drive and 10:56 remaining in the second quarter.

Junior quarterback Cadi Kuntz, who also plays wide receiver and strong safety, unloaded a 30-yard scoring pass to sophomore wide receiver Mikaela Edwards, who also plays safety, for a 6-0 lead. Kuntz’s two-point pass failed.

Just before the second quarter ended and mere seconds on the clock, Kuntz found junior wide receiver Claire Cowles, who plays quarterback and safety, with a five-yard toss for a 12-0 advantage, highlighting a five-play march. Once again, Kuntz’s two-point conversion toss failed.

The Knights (6-2) added an insurance touchdown on a five-play drive and led 18-8 with 6:37 left in the third quarter. The two-point pass from Kuntz didn’t find a receiver.

A bit of trickery was involved on this scoring pass as Kuntz threw a lateral to junior wide receiver Taylor Ford, who plays linebacker and safety, who tossed a five-yard bullet to senior wide receiver Brooklyn Ravelo, who plays linebacker and safety.

Notre Dame’s final tally came when Cowles chipped in with a two-yard run as 9:10 was left in the game that made it 24-0 and ended a five-play excursion. Cowles had a one-point conversion throw that missed the mark.

The Bears’ first possession was a five-play drive that ended when senior quarterback Karisma Mendez’s pass was intercepted by Cowles.

Aside from quarterback, Mendez also plays wide receiver and linebacker.

On Burroughs’ next series, it was three plays and a punt, and the third possession also ended in a punt after three plays.

In the second half, Burroughs’ next series went three plays and a punt and on the fifth series, the Bears used three plays before punting.

The sixth drive was once again three plays and a punt while the seven possession featured seven plays.

It included a 20-yard pass from senior quarterback/wide receiver/defensive back Alyssa Prachasaisoradej to junior wide receiver/defensive back Isabella Estrada.

Another play was a 12-yard toss from Prachasaisoradej to senior running back/defensive back Hailey Burns-Franco and also a throw from Prachasaisoradej to Burns-Franco for five yards.

The last time the Bears (3-7) had the ball the march consumed six plays and saw an eight-yard run and a 16-yard scamper from Prachasaisoradej and a nine-yard burst from sophomore running back/defensive back Kayla Duran as time ran out.

The Bears play at La Canada this Monday at 6 p.m., meet host Marshall on Wednesday at the same time before taking on host Los Altos on Thursday at 4:15 p.m.
