What you need to know today

    Markets slide
U.S. stock markets slid on Wednesday as earnings season picked up steam and Treasury yields touched multi-year highs — the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield broke above 4.9% for the first time since 2007. The pan-European Stoxx 600 index closed 1% lower, with much of the attention on UK inflation data. U.K. inflation came in at 6.7% in September, slightly ahead of expectations and unchanged from the previous month.

    Tesla misses on earnings
Tesla reported third-quarter results that missed expectations on both earnings and revenue for the first time since the second quarter of 2019. The electric vehicle maker reported adjusted earnings of 66 cents per share vs. 73 cents per share expected and revenue of $23.35 billion per share vs. $24.1 billion expected. Tesla’s total operating margin also came in significantly lower at 7.6%, from the year-ago quarter’s 17.2%.

    Netflix profit tops expectations
Netflix’s password-sharing crackdown and its new ad-supported tier boosted subscriber growth in the third quarter. The streaming giant added 8.76 million global subscribers during the quarter, higher than expectations of 5.49 million and the most it’s added since the second quarter of 2020 – when Covid restrictions kept people at home. Its earnings came in at $3.73 per share, better than the $3.49 per share expected.

iPhone 15 sales off to a slow start in China
A month after Apple’s iPhone 15 came out, analysts and investors are starting to see signs of slow demand in China versus last year. Sales of iPhone 15 models are down 4.5% for the first 17 days in Apple’s third largest market compared to last year, according to an estimate from Counterpoint Research.

[PRO] Morgan Stanley’s top China video game stock
Morgan Stanley is calling this China stock a global video game “powerhouse” with a 40% upside. In the past decade, the company has increased its game revenue tenfold and tripled its market share in China from 8% to 9% in 2013 to 2014, to 24% by the end of 2023.

    The bottom line

U.S. stock markets closed out Wednesday with sweeping declines. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury hit 4.908%, rising above 4.9% for the first time since 2007 as investors scoured economic data for clues on the Federal Reserve’s interest rate trajectory.

Housing starts rose in September, but at a slower-than-expected rate, according to data released Wednesday. Building permits fell last month, but less than economists anticipated. This arrives a day after consumers showed surprising strength in September, boosting retail sales well above expectations.

Traders are still expecting an over 85% chance that the Fed will hold its rates steady when it announces its next monetary decision on Nov. 1, but the retail sales figure has given way to some bets of another hike in December.

Markets seemingly have no dearth of catalysts this week as earnings season gathers steam. Tesla missed third-quarter expectations on both profit and revenue. Netflix’s password-sharing crackdown efforts along with interest in its new ad-supported tier set its quarter up for success.

Netflix’s results also showed that the streaming giant is back on track. Just in April 2022, it had reported a loss of 200,000 subscribers. Turns out, a cheaper advertising tier — a product Netflix hoped would appeal to those who had shared passwords — helped the company add more subscribers. Of course, not as much as it did during the throes of the Covid-19 lockdowns but a step in the right direction.

More lies ahead for investors who will focus on Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s speech at noon ET. “Powell is always tacking back to whatever helps feed the narrative that they need to stay vigilant, and for understandable reasons,” said Luke Tilley, chief economist at Wilmington Trust.

He is expected to assure markets the central bank is committed to its fight against inflation, but maybe this time with a little less force.

Apple seeks fix for overheating iPhone 15 issue

    00:21

Apple is blaming a software bug and app issues for causing its latest iPhones to become hot to the touch and, according to some customers, uncomfortable to handle.

The smartphone maker said Saturday in a statement that it would update the iOS 17 operating system that iPhone 15 devices run on to fix a glitch that made the phones become “warmer than expected.” The company is also working with developers to make changes to apps that “overload the system,” causing the phones to overheat, it said.

Apple has not provided a timeline for rolling out the software patch, but fixes for the app-related issue are underway. Instagram, owned by Meta Platforms, modified its social media app earlier this week to prevent it from heating up the new iPhone running iOS 17. Other apps, such as Uber and the video game Asphalt 9, are still in the process of rolling out their updates, Apple said.

New features in Apple’s iOS 17 update: What to know

    05:20

It remains unclear if all the devices in the iPhone 15 lineup are running hotter than expected and whether earlier-generation devices are also affected by the bug and app issues.

Apple did not immediately reply to CBS MoneyWatch’s request for comment.

Apple customers began reporting that some iPhone 15 devices, including the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, were running hot to the touch after the smartphone went on sale last week.

The “iPhone 15 Pro Max gets really hot easily. I’m just browsing social media and it’s burning up.” one user said in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter).

The Wall Street Journal reported last month that the iPhone 15 Pro Max heated up to 112 degrees when running processor-intensive tasks like gaming and when it was being charged.

It’s not unusual for new iPhones to get unusually warm during the first few days of use or when they are being restored with backup information stored in the cloud, issues that Apple already flags for users.

The devices also can get hot when using apps such as video games and augmented reality technology that require a lot of processing power, but the heating issues with the iPhone 15 models have gone beyond those typical situations.

Apple said on Saturday that it will issue a software update that would address customer complaints about the latest iPhone 15 models, released just over a week ago, running hot.

Apple said that the new iPhone models were running hot because of a combination of bugs in iOS 17, bugs in apps, and a temporary set-up period.

    An Apple spokesperson told CNBC:

“We have identified a few conditions which can cause iPhone to run warmer than expected. The device may feel warmer during the first few days after setting up or restoring the device because of increased background activity. We have also found a bug in iOS 17 that is impacting some users and will be addressed in a software update. Another issue involves some recent updates to third-party apps that are causing them to overload the system. We’re working with these app developers on fixes that are in the process of rolling out.”

After Apple released the new iPhone 15 models earlier this month, user complaints on Apple’s forums, Reddit, and social media suggest that all four models can get hotter than expected during use. CNBC’s review of the new iPhone Pros also noted the iPhone 15 Pro Max got hot.

“I just got the iPhone 15 Pro today and it’s so hot i can’t even hold it for very long!” wrote one commenter on Apple’s forums.

Apple’s new high-end models, the $999 iPhone 15 Pro and $1,199 iPhone 15 Pro Max have a redesigned titanium enclosure with an aluminum frame to make them easier to repair. The problem with the new models overheating was not related to the titanium chassis design, Apple said.

Instead, Apple points to bugs with specific apps and a bug in iOS that can be fixed with software updates. Apple said that a forthcoming iOS 17 update to address the issue won’t reduce the performance of the devices.

Apple’s website says that users may notice phones feeling warmer when they’re set up from a backup, when they’re wirelessly charging, using graphics-heavy apps or games, or streaming high-quality video. Apple says that it’s normal for devices to be warm when they’re being heavily used, and if iPhones don’t display a temperature warning, they’re safe to use.

    Still long lines

  • Apple’s Next Era Is Revealing Itself With the iPhone 15

Apple’s Next Era Is Revealing Itself With the iPhone 15

    [ad_1]

In many respects, the recent release of the iPhone 15 underscores a consistent theme we’ve observed in Apple’s design philosophy over the past few years. At a cursory glance, the iPhone 15 seems remarkably similar to its predecessors, the iPhone 14, iPhone 13, and the iPhone 12. A rectangle with a flat edge. A design that is almost indistinguishable from the one before it and the one before that and so on. The most notable design variations being the larger camera, a more refined screen resolution, and weight changes. In fact, I’d venture to say that if someone were to emerge from a 15-year coma, after getting over the shock of our last president, if you handed them the last half dozen iPhones, they might assume that these phones were all launched simultaneously.

Which means many people are asking themselves (and a lot of people have been asking me): Do I really need to upgrade to something that looks almost exactly like the thing I just got last year? My answer is, yes and no. First, it’s important to understand why the last four iPhones look like quadruplets. It’s largely due to the current design philosophy at Apple, which is less “let’s change it for the sake of changing it” and more “we think this is perfect and we ain’t changing…” You get the point. Sure, Apple could venture into producing foldable or sliding screens, emulating the designs of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold or the TCL Slider. However, these innovations, while futuristic and gimmicky (and also give me anxiety that I’m going to break something while answering a text message), simply don’t feel like directions Apple would ever go in.

I’d venture to say that the iPhone’s design, much like the consistent shape of the Coca-Cola bottle since 1915 or the minimal changes to the Porsche 911’s form since 1963, has seemingly reached a pinnacle. It’s not about reinvention anymore, but now about honing a signature style. As we anticipate future models, it wouldn’t be surprising if the iPhone 16, 17, and several subsequent versions after that continue to bear strong resemblances to their predecessors. This design philosophy might only truly change when technology takes a significant leap forward, perhaps to the point where we have Apple computer chips embedded directly in our brains.

Which brings us back to our questions: Do you need to upgrade to the iPhone 15 or 15 Pro? The answer is, it really comes down to you as a consumer and how you use your current phone. If you’re seeking a groundbreaking change in design, it’s evident that the iPhone 15 Pro might not be the answer. However, if you want enhanced performance, longer battery life, upgraded camera capabilities, and a few new features that weren’t in your last phone, then an upgrade is justifiable.

There are definitely new features that are worth the jump for a lot of people. For example, the iPhone 15 Pro comes with a new A17 Pro, the industry’s first 3-nanometer chip, the science of which means nothing to us mere mortals, but which translates to faster speeds, higher graphical performance, and better battery life. In a practical sense, this means you will be able to play more graphic-intensive video games, like Assassin’s Creed Mirage or Resident Evil Village. Throw in a Backbone controller, and voilà, your phone is now a handheld game console. Which translates to Apple taking on other game consoles from Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo. Then there’s the camera, which now has the equivalent of “seven lenses.” These upgraded lenses include a macro camera and a whole range of zooms—up to five-times depending which model of the new phone that you get. If that stuff doesn’t matter to you, then stick with your old phone.

That being said, perhaps the biggest feature of the new iPhone though is one that we all won’t be able to even take advantage of, or see, until sometime next year. The company introduced a new way of capturing moments called “spatial video,” which can record video in what feels like 3D. Earlier this year I had the chance to try out the Apple Vision Pro, which blew me away on so many levels (more on that at a later date); one of the most impressive new features was spatial videos. In a demo, I watched a clip of a kids birthday party that felt like I was actually there. When I moved my head from side to side the space changed, as did the angles I could see. It was truly like reliving an actual moment. The fact that you will soon be able to use your iPhone to capture those clips and then go back and watch them later on your Vision Pros, will make it feel like you just walked into one of those amazing “reach out and touch someone” AT&T phone commercials from the 1980s. If you’re going to get a Vision Pro when released sometime next year (which, trust me, you will once you try it) you’re going to upgrade to the new iPhone, guaranteed.

It’s not just the design of the iPhone that remained the same in form and shape. The new Apple AirPod Pros, which Apple also released last week, look exactly like their predecessors, but come with an impressive new feature that quietens sound when you begin speaking. Then there’s the new Apple Watch Ultra 2 which looks almost identical to the Apple Watch Ultra before it—twinsies! The screen is definitely brighter, and the watch is faster and more responsive, but it’s exactly the same as the one before it. Same rectangular and curved edges. But for me, there is one tiny little feature of the Apple Watch Ultra 2 that I think is among the biggest announcements the company made with its new product lineup.

Like the iPhone, the new Apple Watch has a new chip too: the S9 SiP. It enables a new feature called “double tap,” which lets you interact with the device by simply tapping your watch-hand thumb and index finger together. So imagine you have groceries in your right hand and your watch (which is on your left wrist) rings with an incoming call, rather than put the groceries down or use your nose to answer (yes, I’ve done this many times) you simply tap your fingers together and voilà, it answers. Now it’s true that this was a feature in Assistive Touch, an aspect of Apple’s iOS that helps people who have difficulty touching the screen, who could use this feature to do endless tasks on their watch, from pay with Apple Pay to access the notifications center. But the fact that Apple is showcasing this to the masses is indicative of a much larger theme the company is about to embark on.

Every once in a while, Apple’s innovations reveal themselves as a kernel, and then become an entirely new way of interacting with technology, often changing society writ large. For example, the pinch-to-zoom on the first iPhone announced in 2007 created an entirely new way of interacting with every device we own. That way of talking to screens became an entirely new language, given that prior to that innovation, phones and tablets were just us prodding with our fingers. The company’s iMessage platform (you know, the blue bubbles) started out as just a simple feature in the iPhone and transformed itself into an entire ecosystem that has filled the same needs as social media for some people. And Apple’s App Store, which was almost an afterthought when it opened in 2008 and had only 500 apps in the store. Today, there are over 1.6 million apps available for download on the iPhone (3.5 million on Android) and that little innovation changed software development forever. The new double-tap gesture isn’t just going to be on the watch, but will also be added to the new Vision Pros next year. It’s the entire way that you interact with the device: looking at an object with your eyes, and then tapping your fingers together to interact with the user interface. What you’re seeing with that little tap gesture on the Apple Watch, is the beginning of a new era of interacting with your devices.

  • Apple CEO Tim Cook appears in New York to celebrate iPhone 15 release

Apple CEO Tim Cook appears in New York to celebrate iPhone 15 release

    [ad_1]

Apple CEO Tim Cook opened the company’s Fifth Avenue store Friday in New York to celebrate the official release of the iPhone 15 lineup, the Apple Watch Series 9 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2.

Customers flocked to the store to get their hands on the new devices, and the line stretched around the corner of 58th Street from Fifth Avenue to Madison Avenue. One man told CNBC’s Steve Kovach that he had been waiting in line since 8 p.m. the night before. Cook unlocked the store and took selfies with people as they entered.

Apple announced its new devices at its annual launch event earlier this month, and preorders opened Sept. 15. Analysts and investors are watching closely to see whether the new iPhones can reignite the global smartphone market, which is on track to hit a decade low this year, according to an August report from Counterpoint Research.

In a Thursday note, before the launch of the devices in stores, analysts at Bank of America wrote that ship dates for the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models were extended but “somewhat lower” on average compared to the preorder cycle last year.

Shares of Apple closed up less than 1% Friday. The company did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.

The new iPhone 15 lineup starts at $799 and features a USB-C charging port and a new titanium exterior. CNBC’s Kif Leswing tested the two new Pro iPhones, which start at $999 and $1,199, and found that the titanium is a “huge upgrade” because it makes the phone feel much lighter.

Customers can purchase the new devices at their nearest Apple Store or online.

iPhone 15 demand exceeds expectations, as consumers worldwide line up to buy

    [ad_1]

If you’re looking to get your hands on an iPhone 15, you’ll likely have to take a number.

The iPhone 15 hit store shelves worldwide on Friday, drawing large lines at Apple stores in the U.S., China and Europe. The large crowds highlight the strong demand for Apple’s latest smartphone, despite its heftier price tag: The basic iPhone 15 selling for $800, the iPhone 15 Plus for $900 and the iPhone 15 Pro for $1,000.

Part of that demand comes from iPhone consumers finally ready to trade in far older devices for something new, Wedbush Securities analysts Daniel Ives, John Katsingris, Steven Wahrhaftig said in a note on Friday.

“Taking a step back, it’s all about the pent-up demand,” the analysts said. “We estimate 250 million iPhones have not upgraded in 4+ years, massive carrier discounts, and the camera technology/chips in iPhone 15 Pro/Max catalyzing consumers to upgrade.”

The iPhone 15 so far has landed between 10% and 12% more pre-orders than the iPhone 14, far exceeding expectations, the analysts said. Demand is especially strong for the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, with the latter model attracting a large number of orders from the U.S., China, India and parts of Europe.

In New York City, Apple CEO Tim Cook greeted customers purchasing Apple’s new iPhone 15 during a launch event Friday at Apple’s Fifth Avenue flagship store.

That popularity has slowed the completion of pre-order shipments and deliveries for the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, which are now expected to be sent to customers by mid November, according to Wedbush analysts. That’s at least two weeks later than previously anticipated.

Consumer frenzy over the latest iPhone wasn’t the only thing that had people crowding around Apple stores on Friday, however.

In Paris, roughly 40 Apple workers gathered in front of the company’s French flagship store on Friday in heavy rain to demand higher pay. They were joined by more than 2,000 Apple employees across France who are engaging in a strike against the smartphone maker

Apple workers launch nationwide strike in France – right as the iPhone 15 hits stores

    [ad_1]

Workers at Apple stores across France have gone on strike, demanding more pay. The nationwide strike by some 2,100 workers was timed to coincide with the Friday store release of Apple’s latest phone, the iPhone 15, in France. Eager customers had to cross picket lines outside stores to be among the first to buy the new phone.

At the company’s flagship store in central Paris, around 40 shoppers braved the strikes and heavy rain to line up to buy the iPhone15. About the same number of Apple workers were outside, too, holding placards demanding bigger pay checks.

French labor unions say they want a 7% pay hike for Apple store employees, across the board, to compensate for rising inflation. Union leaders said Apple offered an average 4.5% increase for employees in the country, which they rejected.

The U.S. tech giant’s offer is below the current rate of inflation in France, which is 4.9%.

The strikers also want an end to a months-long hiring freeze within the company.

The main union for Apple employees in France, Cidre-CFTC, issued a statement saying:

“Apple has often been exemplary, and the vast majority of its employees are proud to work there. However, for the past several months, dialogue has been at a standstill. Obligatory annual negotiations have been swept aside without any real discussion during two meetings.”

The strike is just the latest headache for the tech company’s French operations.

Is the iPhone 12 banned in France?

Apple was forced to stop selling its iPhone 12 model in France earlier this month after it was found to have radiation levels above the European Union safety threshold. France’s government minister for digital technology said the company had agreed to implement changes so that the iPhone 12 complies with the EU regulations going forward.

Apple always maintained that the iPhone 12, which debuted in 2020, is safe. The company said the test results in France were “related to a specific testing protocol.”

The French unions representing Apple store workers have also said they believe the company’s employees should get a greater share of the company’s huge profits.

In June, Apple made Wall Street history as the first company with a market value over $3 trillion. That’s slightly higher than the GDP of France, which the World Bank put at $2.78 trillion in 2022.

When I plugged it into the outlet and my iPhone ProMax i couldn’t believe my eyes how fast this charged my phone. I am very grateful to this seller. These chargers are really very nice and I recommend anyone not to hesitate buying.” — Ahmed

“The charger is particularly useful when your battery is low because it will bring your charge up very quickly. Even if you don’t have time for a full charge, in a few minutes, you can be ready to go.” — Jem

I love the long cables and the blocks are great. With technology constantly changing like it does it’s nice to find updated parts for affordable prices. Would definitely purchase again!” — Tonitrus9

  • iPhone 15: 4 things the new iPhone can do that your old one can’t

iPhone 15: 4 things the new iPhone can do that your old one can’t

    [ad_1]

The iPhone 15 is hitting store shelves next week, but not all Apple lovers are ready to turn in their old phones just yet. Many want to know if the latest generation of iPhones are worth the splurge.

At first glance, the iPhone 15 appears to share many of the same features as its less-expensive predecessors. However, the latest generation of the device includes a few new functions that could make a big difference in users’ lives.

Here are four things the iPhone 15 can do that your old iPhone can’t.

    1. Charge faster with a USB-C connector

The iPhone 15 will come with a Type-C charging port, the same charging port built into the Samsung Galaxy and other Android phones. The change comes after the European Union passed a law requiring all mobile phones and other devices sold in Europe to come equipped with a USB Type-C charging port by the end of 2024.

In addition being more widely available as the new standard for wired connection of smart devices, USB-C chargers offer another advantage: speed. USB-C connectors ocan charge your phone significantly faster than Apple’s Lightening cable, while using the same amount of voltage. Also unlike Apple’s proprietary Lightening cable, a USB-C connector can be used on non-Apple devices.

    2. Call AAA without cellphone or WiFi service

The iPhone 15 features Roadside Assistance, a satellite-powered feature that allows users to contact AAA without access to cellular service or Wifi.

    Apple

Using the new Roadside Assistance feature, iPhone 15 users can contact AAA in the event of a roadside emergency — even if they’re off the grid and don’t have access to a cellular network or WiFi. The satellite-enabled service allows AAA to message users directly and track their exact locations for service dispatches, according to Apple’s product announcement. A short questionnaire appears on users’ screens that helps AAA respond to potential service requests.

Access to Roadside Assistance is available for free for two years with purchase of a new iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, Apple’s website shows. The service is “covered according to AAA membership, but is also available separately for nonmembers,” according to the company.

    3. Zoom in (even closer) on subjects

The iPhone 15 offers the most powerful zoom capabilities yet of any Apple smartphone, according to Apple.

The iPhone 15 offers the most powerful zoom capabilities yet of any Apple smartphone, according to Apple.

    Apple

The iPhone 15 Pro Max features a telephoto camera with up to 5x zoom in, the longest optical zoom of any iPhone camera. The regular Pro version offers 3x optical zoom in, which is the same as the iPhone 14 Pro.

Digital zoom on the iPhone 15, goes up to 25x on the Pro Max, and 15x on the Pro.

Optical zoom refers to use of the camera lens to magnify an image, while digital zoom refers to the use of cropping to enlarge an image after it’s captured.

    4. Take better portrait-style photos

If you’ve ever meant to take a portrait-style photo, snapped a picture of your subject and later realized your camera was toggled to the wrong setting, you’re in luck.

    Apple

The iPhone 15 senses when a person (or pet) comes into your camera’s view and automatically captures photo depth information, allowing you to turn your photos into portrait-style pictures long after your subject leaves the frame. Regular photos on the iPhone 15 can be turned into portrait-style photos using the Photo app.

The upgraded portrait mode also features “sharper detail, more vivid colors, and improved low-light performance,” according to Apple.

Apple event reveals new iPhone 15. Here are the biggest changes — and its surprising new price.

    [ad_1]

Apple unveiled its latest iPhone lineup today at the company’s annual launch in Cupertino, California, where the tech giant also introduced a new Apple watch.

The event is an important showcase for Apple, which wants to spur consumers to upgrade their older iPhones in favor of its latest devices. This year is especially important given that the company is struggling to break out of a slump that’s led to a sales drop in three consecutive quarters.

“These are the best and most capable iPhones we’ve ever made,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said at the Tuesday event.

Here’s what to know about today’s event.

What is new about the iPhone 15?

Here are some of the changes announced by Apple on Tuesday:

    • The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus will come in five colors: Pink, yellow, green, blue and black
    • The iPhone 15 Pro models will come in black titanium, white titanium, blue titanium or a natural titanium finish
    • The Pro includes an A17 bionic chip that will improve speed and performance, according to Apple
    • All models iPhone 15 models have the “Dynamic Island” for app notifications — a look that was introduced with last year’s Pro and Pro Max devices
    • The phone comes in two sizes: Either a 6.1-inch base model or 6.7-inch screen Plus model
    • The iPhone 15 has an improved, 48 megapixel camera

When will the iPhone 15 be available for purchase?

The Apple iPhone 15 will be available for preorder on Friday, September 15, and will be on sale in stores on September 22.

What will the iPhone 15 cost?

Apple is keeping the price of many iPhone 15 models the same as the 14.

    • The iPhone 15 will start at $799, while the 15 Plus will start at $899, with 128GB of internal storage. That’s the same price as for current iPhone 14 models
    • The iPhone 15 Pro will start at $999, which is the same price as the iPhone 14 Pro, Apple said
    • The Phone 15 Pro Max starts at $1,199, up $100 from the 14 Pro Max

Apple also said it will have “excellent offers” for consumers who want to upgrade, including up to $800 off when you trade in an iPhone 11 or newer.

Is the iPhone charger moving from Lightning?

Apple is phasing out its Lightning port cables, which were rolled out in 2012 with the iPhone 5, because of a mandate from European regulators that all phones use the USB-C charging port starting in late 2024.

Apple said its iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will have USB-C ports, but can also be charged with MagSafe, which is a magnetically attached power connector.

The transition may not be too inconvenient for most consumers. That’s because USB-C cables already are so widely used on a range of computers, smartphones and other devices that many people may already own them.

The shift to USB-C cables may even prove popular since that standard typically charges devices more quickly and also offers faster speeds for data transfers.

What is new with the Apple Watch?

Besides its new iPhones, Apple introduced the new Apple Watch — a product that made its debut nearly a decade ago.

The Apple Watch Series 9 starts at $399, while the Apple Watch SE starts at $249, Apple said on Tuesday.

One new Apple Watch feature is something called “double tap,” a command users can deploy to answer calls or play or pause music with one hand. By tapping your index finger and thumb twice on your watch hand, the watch will respond to the gesture, Apple said.

The double tap gesture could be useful for someone walking their dog or carrying items, allowing them to send commands to their Apple Watch with one hand, the company said.

    Should I upgrade my iPhone?

About 25% of Apple’s 1.2 billion iPhone users haven’t upgraded their phones in four years, according to Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives. Some of those 300 million people with older iPhones may be wondering if it’s time to open their wallets and get a new device this year.

Still, it can be tough to determine when it’s time to retire your old phone and switch to the latest iPhone. Much of that decision could depend on what type of handset you currently use, with owners of newer models having less of a reason to upgrade, Olivier Blanchard, a research director at tech research firm The Futurum Group, told CBS MoneyWatch

“The company’s products remain amazing, but with the innovation curve of the whole smartphone category flattening there just isn’t much the company can do to distinguish each generation of iPhone from its predecessors when it comes to technical features, making price the critical variable in driving sales,” Wall Street analyst Adam Crisafullo of Vital Knowledge told investors in a report.

But if you have a smartphone that’s older than the iPhone 12, the iPhone 15’s new chip, improved camera features and USB-C port could be a big step up.

Apple’s iPhone 15 event kicks off on Tuesday. Here’s what to expect

    [ad_1]

    Carlos Barria | Reuters

Apple is holding its most important launch event of the year on Tuesday at its headquarters in Cupertino, California, where it’s expected to unveil new hardware, including the iPhone 15.

Apple will present a prerecorded video featuring company executives to launch the products, which will be streamed on YouTube and Apple’s website. Last year’s event lasted about an hour an a half. Apple has used prerecorded videos for its product showcases since 2020.

Apple’s launches are important for the company and build hype for the products and set the stage for a marketing blitz heading into the December quarter, its biggest sales period of the year. Thirty-one million people have watched Apple’s YouTube video from last year’s launch, revealing that customers still like to get information directly from the company.

This year, the tech giant is hoping the new iPhones can bust a sales slump, fend off renewed competition from Huawei and persuade owners of Android phones to switch.

Apple also announced its new VR headset, the Vision Pro, in June ahead of a planned launch in 2024. The company could provide an update on its efforts to attract developers, but more details about that product are likely not to be released until next year.

Apple’s Macs and iPads are unlikely to see new reveals on Tuesday, given the company usually prefers to give them their own events. Last year, Apple announced new iPads through a press release.

This year’s launch invitations have the tagline “Wonderlust,” although the taglines don’t necessarily preview what the company is announcing. CNBC will be covering the launch live from Apple’s headquarters and with a live blog on CNBC.com.

Last year, Apple announced new iPhones, Apple Watches and updated AirPods at its September event. Here’s what to expect from this year’s edition:

    iPhone 15: USB-C and titanium

Apple’s invite to its Sept. 12 event.

    Apple

Apple is expected to release four new iPhone models, continuing the pattern that’s been in place since 2020. If Apple keeps its naming pattern, this year’s models will share the iPhone 15 brand.

Apple is likely to release two sizes of middle-range iPhones, one with a 6.1-inch screen and one with a 6.7-inch screen, as well as two sizes of higher end “Pro” phones with titanium casing and better cameras, according to reports from Bloomberg News, TF International Securities hardware analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Wall Street analysts.

This year, the biggest change is expected to be a USB-C charging port, replacing Apple’s proprietary Lightning port, which was introduced in 2012 as the iPhone charger “for the next decade.”

A USB-C charging port on iPhones will match the same charging port on Android phones, newer laptops, iPads, wireless headphones and other gadgets.

The change is being spurred by new European regulations which require a common charging port. Apple is unlikely to mention that the change was required by a new law, but it will probably emphasize the positives for users, such as convenience and faster charging. It might also give the port a proprietary Apple marketing name.

Apple will “comply” with European Union regulation that requires electronic devices to be equipped with USB-C charging, said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing. That will mean Apple’s iPhones, which currently use its proprietary Lightning charging standard, will need to change to support USB-C.

Jakub Porzyck | Nurphoto | Getty Images

New Pro models could also get a titanium casing, replacing the stainless steel used in the past few models. Titanium is lighter than steel, reducing the phones’ total weight. Event invitations show an Apple logo in what looks like a titanium finish.

Lower-end phones — expected to be called simply iPhone 15 — could get an upgrade to what the company calls the “dynamic island,” or a cutout that holds the phone’s facial recognition cameras toward the top of the screen. Last year’s Pro models ditched Apple’s “notch” for the undulating window, which can show real-time updates, such as how far away an Uber is or what’s playing on the music app. The mute switch, which has been present on iPhones for over a decade, could gain new functions as a customizable “action button.”

Apple is also likely to focus on camera and chip improvements as reasons for the upgrade. The biggest and most expensive iPhone model, the bigger Pro, could get a new lens that can zoom with twice the strength as the 3x zoom lens on the iPhone 14 Pro, according to Bloomberg.

One open question is whether Apple will raise price points. Some analysts think so, noting rising costs for parts like memory or processors. However, Apple did not raise U.S. iPhone prices last year under similar conditions. It does tweak its prices around the world regularly after launches and in response to currency fluctuations.

    Apple Watch and accessories

    Apple Watch Ultra.

    Sofia Pitt

Last year, Apple released the Apple Watch Series 8 and a new high-end titanium model called the Ultra in September.

Both are likely to get updates this year, although Apple’s Watches don’t typically get as many major changes from year to year as the iPhones. Apple’s mainstream watches have had the same size and shape since 2018.

The company is likely to upgrade the chip inside the new watches, as well as update its health sensors, according to analysts. But Apple may save bigger changes for the device’s 10th anniversary next year.

Apple also has several accessories that use Lightning connectors, such as some of its AirPod models, Beats headphones, mice and keyboards.

AirPods Pro will get a new feature that doesn’t need new hardware called Adaptive Audio. It uses machine learning and software to intelligently turn down the volume and noise canceling so users can be aware of their immediate surroundings.

Apple will likely update its accessories to work with USB-C, but the updated accessories may not be discussed on Tuesday, or could be released later.

    iOS 17

    StandBy Mode in iOS 17

    Todd Haselton | CNBC

Even users who don’t plan to pick up a new iPhone or Watch will get new software for their devices. Apple previews its latest operating systems for its devices in June, then releases them in September alongside new iPhones.

Many of Apple’s best new features don’t require new hardware and will be available to everyone with an iPhone released since 2018.

Here’s some of what is new in iOS 17:

    • The software includes a revamp of the caller ID screen called “contact posters” where users can choose the images that show up when they call other iPhone users.
    • Autocorrect has been improved using a transformer-based language model, the same technology underpinning applications like ChatGPT.
    • A new Journal app encourages users to save thoughts and feelings on a daily basis and uses on-device machine learning to spot patterns without sending the data to a server in the cloud.
    • A new standby dock mode turns your phone into a clock with widgets that can show alarms, appointments or other updating information.
    • A business card replacement called NameDrop allows two iPhone users to exchange personal information by tapping their phones together.
    • Offline Apple maps make it possible for users to save huge swaths of roads and land to navigate even without cellphone service.

Apple set to roll out the iPhone 15. Here’s what to expect.

    [ad_1]

Apple on Sept. 12 is set to unveil the iPhone 15, which could come with an Android-like charging port and better camera zoom. But those new features could add to the device’s already considerable cost, according to analysts.

The company’s annual product launch in Cupertino, California, which is also expected to include new Apple Watches, Airpods and other gear, will give Apple loyalists a first look at the latest-generation iPhone. Here’s what to expect.

    What will it cost?

The pricing for iPhone 15 models could be roughly $100 higher than those of Apple’s previous smartphone lines.

That would be the first time in years that Apple has raised its iPhone prices, analysts at Wedbush Securities said in a report on Thursday. If so, a standard 6.1-inch iPhone 15 with 128 gigabytes of storage could start at $899, while the 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Plus could start at $999.

However, consumers could pay less for the iPhone 15 by taking advantage of “massive” discounts from major U.S. phone carriers in the coming months, according to the investment firm.

    What’s new?

The iPhone 15 will feature a “noticeably faster” A17 bionic chip, enhanced battery life, a type-C charging port, “improved” camera technology and titanium edges, among other upgrades, Wedbush analysts said in the report.

For many consumers, the biggest draw may be the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s periscope telephoto lens that, which the firm said “significantly boosts the [phone’s] optical zoom capability.” The lens offers a 5x-6x optical zoom — up to double the zoom of the iPhone 14 Pro.

The iPhone 15 is also likely to feature a USB-C charging port, the same port built into Android smartphone models, Olivier Blanchard, a research director at tech research firm The Futurum Group, told CBS MoneyWatch.

    Should I upgrade?

It can be tough to determine when it’s time to retire your old smartphone and switch to the latest iPhone, and much of that decision could depend on what type of handset you currently use.

If you have a relatively new iPhone, such as an iPhone 12 or later model, you might be better off staying with your existing device, especially if Apple hikes its prices, Blanchard said.

“I’m not seeing any crazy new chips, and I’m not hearing about any amazing new features,” he added. “We’re not going to see anything super crazy interesting or different, unfortunately.”

But if you have a much older model smartphone, the iPhone 15 — with its new chip, improved camera features and USB-C port — could be a big step up.

Apple Faces $200 Billion Loss as China Extends iPhone Ban | Entrepreneur

    [ad_1]

In just two days, Apple incurred losses of approximately $200 billion, currently making it the worst-performing stock in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, CNN reported. The losses come after the tech giant’s shares plummeted by 2.9% on Thursday following reports that China intends to expand its ban on iPhones to include government-backed entities and corporations.

On Wednesday, The Wall Street Journal reported that China issued a directive order in recent weeks, telling officials at central government agencies to refrain from using Apple iPhones and other foreign-branded devices for work or bringing them into the office, part of a broader effort to reduce reliance on foreign technology and enhance cybersecurity.

One day later, news broke that the government bans would be extended to government-backed agencies and state companies such as oil firm PetroChina, which employs millions of workers, Bloomberg reported.

Related: People Poured $10 Billion Into Apple’s New Savings Accounts — But Goldman Sachs Wants to Pull the Plug

The stock drop signals that investors may be concerned about Apple’s ability to operate effectively in China, the world’s second-largest economy, CNN added. The bans are particularly worrisome for Apple since China is its largest foreign market, and accounted for about one-fifth of its total revenue last year, according to an SEC filing.

Analysts at Bank of America noted that the possibility of an iPhone ban coincides with the launch of a new top-tier flagship smartphone by the Chinese manufacturer Huawei, describing the timing as “interesting,” per CNN.

The new smartphone is also under investigation by the U.S. government to discern whether it found a way around American rules on exporting to create the new chip, with national security adviser Jake Sullivan saying in a press briefing on Tuesday that the U.S. needs “more information about precisely its character and composition.”

Apple Set to Unveil iPhone 15 at ‘Wonderlust’ September Event | Entrepreneur

    [ad_1]

Apple has announced its annual product upgrade event will take place on September 12th, where the company will unveil the release of the new iPhone and the Apple Watches, CNN reported.

The event will be held in Cupertino, California, at the Steve Jobs Theater, and live-streamed at 10 a.m. PST.

The “Wonderlust” event comes as Apple has experienced a bit of a sales slump, reporting its third straight quarter of declines in August. In Q3 2023, Apple had a 1.4% decline in revenue and, if declines persist, it would mark the longest streak of losses for the company in nearly two decades, according to Bloomberg.

Among the products that are slated to be announced are the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro, along with new Apple Watch iterations, including a second-generation model of the Apple Watch Ultra, which first debuted in September.

Related: Apple’s Most Expensive Item Isn’t Sold at the Apple Store: ‘One of the Most Obscure in Existence’

Leaks suggest that these new iPhone models will bring substantial enhancements, such as fresh color options, improved battery performance, a transition from Apple’s exclusive lightning connector to USB-C, faster charging, and significantly upgraded camera capabilities, CNN reported.

With the upcoming event, Apple could turn things around and end Q4 strong, as the unveiling of new iPhones and Apple Watches before the holiday season, and together account for 58.6% of the company’s overall revenue generation, per Bloomberg.

Why is the Apple event called “Wonderlust?”

Apple is using the tagline “Wonderlust” for the event and, with a track record for using hints in invitations, the word could allude to bigger announcements being made on September 12th.

In 2016, the invite for the annual product upgrade event had blurry lights in the background, ultimately foreshadowing the release of Portrait mode. The 2020 invite used the tagline “Time Flies” and an image of a brush stroke, hinting at the ultimate release of the iPad Air 4 and Apple Pencil 2.

According to MacWorld, the “Wonderlust” tagline could hint at the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s rumored periscope zoom lens with 6X optical zoom. Also, the upcoming Apple Watch Series 9 release aligns with travel, possibly introducing new hiking features or the advanced GPS system from the Apple Watch Ultra.
