    HoYoverse just announced that the upcoming Honkai Star Rail version 2.0 update due February 6th will also add Apple Vision Pro compatibility mode. If you’ve not been following the game recently, this update was confirmed to bring in in three new characters including Black Swan, the beginning of Penacony’s Trailblaze Missions which will continue across 2.2 and 2.3, reruns, and more. Today, HoYoverse confirmed Apple Vision Pro compatibility with more details to be revealed soon. Honkai Star Rail isn’t the first major game to do this, and we’ve slowly seen more Apple Arcade titles confirm Apple Vision Pro support. I’m curious to see how this Honkai Star Rail Apple Vision Pro compatibility mode ends up being. There are no further details for the Honkai Star Rail Apple Vision Pro update.

    Hopefully we see more of the iPhone 15 Pro optimization as well with version 2.0.     Earlier today during Sony’s new State of Play showcase that had a few games I will be pre-ordering soon, HoYoverse showcased a new gameplay trailer for its upcoming urban fantasy action RPG Zenless Zone Zero. If you’ve not kept up with Zenless Zone Zero recently, it was confirmed for release in 2024 on iOS, Android, and PC but also confirmed for unannounced consoles. The new State of Play trailer for Zenless Zone Zero confirmed that it is in development for PS5 as well. A release window was not given, but I hope it does launch alongside the mobile and PC versions. Watch the newest Zenless Zone Zero gameplay trailer below:

    I assume Zenless Zone Zero will make use of the PS5 DualSense controller haptics and adaptive triggers as Genshin Impact does. Either way, I’ll be playing Zenless Zone Zero on iPhone 15 Pro, iPad Pro, and PS5 whenever it releases on those platforms. It is going to be interesting to see if this one and maybe even Honkai Star Rail come to the Nintendo Switch successor whenever that launches.     After playing Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 4 Remake on iPhone 15 Pro for review, I was very excited and optimistic about Death Stranding Director’s Cut () because I love the game and wanted to see how the engine scaled for Apple hardware. Following its debut on PS4 back in 2019 where it was a stunning showcase for the console, it hit Windows PC in 2020 delivering various visual and performance improvements including new collaboration content. A year later, Death Stranding Director’s Cut was announced and released as a native PS5 game (with an upgrade path for existing PS4 owners) delivering many enhancements, new content, features, and more.

    The PS5 version is easily my favorite way to experience Death Stranding on the big screen, but I also enjoyed playing it on Steam Deck. The new content in this Director’s Cut was also offered on PC via an upgrade path in 2022. Two years since then, and with a sequel having been announced, Kojima Productions has brought Death Stranding Director’s Cut to modern Apple hardware through 505 Games. I’ve played Death Stranding on PS4 and PC, Death Stranding Director’s Cut on PS5 and Steam Deck, and now Death Stranding Director’s Cut on iPhone 15 Pro for this review. I’ll be covering what makes this game so special and the port in this review.

    Death Stranding is an open world action game about connecting people, helping others, and delivering cargo across the United States. It is definitely not a game for everyone, especially if you’re used to the typical AAA releases we see each year. What set it apart from the rest is how it blended its amazing game world, narrative despite some pacing issues, incredible visuals, and addictive gameplay together. One other thing that stuck out to me was the superb use of licensed music. In a lot of ways, I enjoyed the non combat parts of Death Stranding the most. I’d love for an option to just play the game to help others and deliver cargo across the gorgeous locations rather than dealing with the stress from the combat encounters and boss fights. That’s where Death Stranding Director’s Cut comes into the picture to some degree. One of the highlights of the entire game was shown in one of the trailers. The moment you head towards Port Knot City. It has one of the best uses of licensed music in a game in recent times.

    Death Stranding Director’s Cut built upon the original with more items, a firing range, a race track, many new structures and traversal options making things easier, combat changes, full DualSense support, more graphics options on console, 21:9 support, new cosmetics, new quests, and more. It was a superb upgrade over the original and it even sold me on 21:9 for games more than most games I tried with that aspect ratio. Death Stranding Director’s Cut is basically the definitive version of Death Stranding and it is the version Kojima Productions and 505 Games have brought over to iPhone 15 Pro, iPad (M1 and later), and macOS (M1 and later).

    I haven’t had enough time with Death Stranding Director’s Cut for a full scored review yet, and I’ll be updating this once I’ve played more and also seen how it feels on my M1 MacBook Air. The few hours I’ve spent with it with a controller and replayed with touch controls have been interesting, but disappointing in parts. While I could manage touch controls for the Resident Evil games to some degree, I just wasn’t able to enjoy Death Stranding Director’s Cut with touch controls. You can customize them and use some presets, but it just isn’t fun despite the slight changes to how you interact with the triggers. One nice addition is gyro support which you can use with touch controls as well.

    On the controller side, I love that Death Stranding Director’s Cut lets you choose from multiple button prompt options regardless of your controller. You can opt for it to automatically change the button prompts or force it. I was surprised to see Death Stranding Director’s Cut also supports adaptive triggers to some degree. It isn’t as well-implemented as the PS5 version, but I don’t think any game wirelessly manages to do the same on mobile yet. Death Stranding Director’s Cut also feels perfect with a controller, but that wasn’t really surprising. I noticed an option for keyboard and mouse gameplay, but haven’t had a chance to test on any iPad yet.

    Death Stranding Director’s Cut on iPhone has no graphics options and targets 30fps, but doesn’t hold that target very well. It supports the iPhone 15 Pro’s full display aspect ratio and screen correctly though, and looks great in parts, but the performance is not as good as it should have been right now. I’m not sure if anything will change in a day one update, but the build I have doesn’t hold a locked 30fps. This iOS release also has the full photo mode included which you can invoke using the dedicated touchscreen button or the touchpad on the DualSense controller. For my review, I tested it with my Xbox Series X and DualSense controllers. I had no issues with either of them on the control side.

    Visually, Death Stranding Director’s Cut can look great on the iPhone 15 Pro screen, but it seems to vary in image quality. The opening hour in particular can look stunning on the screen. Performance isn’t perfect though as I said. Even the early moments where you walk across water see noticeable drops in frame rate. I also felt like it was more stable with the analog stick controls rather than touch controls. I’d recommend tweaking the camera movement speed to find a good compromise here. Given the visuals on display, I wasn’t expecting 60fps, but was hoping we’d see a stable 30fps at least. Even the Steam Deck can’t manage a locked 60fps, but I hope we see some improvements so the 30fps target is met more consistently here in updates.

    I mentioned helping other people in Death Stranding Director’s Cut, but this is a singleplayer game. The “Strand System” here is basically some things you build or leave behind in your world also appearing in other people’s game worlds. This also includes messages, ladders, hints, cargo left behind, and more. This is added over time so you don’t immediately start to see a crowded landscape. You can also give others likes or donate things for other players. This system of co-operation built up quite the community in Death Stranding, and the good news for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS users is that servers are shared between Apple devices, Steam, and Epic users who play Death Stranding Director’s Cut. This ensures there will be a lot to see in the game world.

    I will never write about Death Stranding without commenting on the music and audio. Not only is the original game score by Ludvig Forssell excellent, but the special licensed music is superb. I discovered Low Roar through Death Stranding, and I’ve been listening to them almost regularly since 2019. The Silent Poets song is also sublime, especially with the game location it plays in. I remember then doing a vinyl single for Death Stranding before the game even released, and I bought it because I believe in the project. I have no regrets, it is an amazing soundtrack that is worth listening to regardless of if you play Death Stranding or not.

    Death Stranding Director’s Cut on iPhone 15 Pro has been interesting to see on a technical level after loving the game on Steam Deck. It can’t do 60fps on Steam Deck without turning things way down, but I settled for either 30 or 40hz on Steam Deck with great visuals. If you have access to both devices, I’d definitely play Death Stranding Director’s Cut on Steam Deck, but if you do have a Backbone One or other external controller, the iPhone 15 Pro version at its lower pre-order price is worth checking out just to see how it looks and runs if you are curious to play it there. I imagine things are much better on the iPad side of things like with Resident Evil 4 Remake and even on the macOS side. I’ll be testing this on my MacBook Air soon.

    Just like Resident Evil 4 Remake, Death Stranding Director’s Cut is a universal purchase giving you the iPhone 15 Pro, iPadOS, and macOS versions in the single purchase you make. This makes it a much better value proposition overall, and has save data syncing across. I haven’t been able to get the pre-release build installed on the MacBook right now, but I will be testing it once the game is available worldwide to make sure save syncing works. If you are planning on getting Death Stranding Director’s Cut for iPhone 15 Pro, you need to download about 12.6GB after installing the game from the App Store. There are additional downloads as you progress through the story, and Kojima Productions mentions the total download size will be 50GB.

    In future Death Stranding Director’s Cut patches on iPhone 15 Pro, I’d love for some graphics options to maybe turn things down to get better performance, or for better touch controls like we see in games from Feral Interactive.

    While I need a bit more time to see how Death Stranding Director’s Cut feels later on, I can say that it is a very impressive conversion so far in parts that can look great on the iPhone 15 Pro screen. It isn’t ready for being the only way you experience the game though, at least right now based on the time I’ve put into it. I don’t recommend playing it with touch controls at all either, but if you have a Backbone One or external controller, it will be worth buying after the performance issues can be ironed out. The developers went the extra mile and even added some DualSense features into the release and even implemented gyro controls, but the performance issues hold this back right now.

    Hello everyone, and welcome to the week! It’s time once again for our look back at the noteworthy updates of the last seven days. An interesting mix this week, as a lot of the big names are not quite ready for their next events yet. That doesn’t mean we couldn’t pull together a really solid list of game updates for you to look over, though. Of course, you can keep an eye out for updates yourself by participating in the TouchArcade forums. This weekly summary is just here to fill you in on the things you might have missed. Let’s go for it!


    Subway Surfers, Free

    It’s time for the Subway Surfers kids to head back to Greece, this time for a Love Odyssey. Well, I would imagine if you love Odyssey, Greece is the place to be. Complete the season challenge and you’ll add Azura to your roster, along with her Roaring Heart board. The Lunar New Year is also getting some love, with Dragon and the Lunar Scroll board on offer. And hey, Carnival! There’s a limited time challenge for that, too. You can scoop up the Confetti Crush board if you complete it. But wait, there’s still one more thing! You can head back to Houston to celebrate Black History Month. Wow, that’s a lot of holidays and events in one update.


    Jetpack Joyride, Free

    Whoa! Is this an actual new event type for Jetpack Joyride? It’s been a while. A long, long while. The Turbo Tidal Chase event sees you trying to outrace the Tidal Terror by grabbing as many booster power-ups as you can get your hands on. Survive each stage and you’ll get some goodies for your trouble. With this event comes a new Splash & Dash bundle that includes some new costume sets, the HMS Ladybug, and the Turbo Tidal background. You know, I almost never do this, but I’ll give the coveted UMMSotW award to Jetpack Joyride this time for actually doing something new.


    Taiko no Tatsujin Pop Tap Beat,

    A new update for Taiko no Tatsujin Pop Tap Beat almost always means new songs, and this one is no exception. You get six new tunes to play, and there are some great ones in here. Leading the charge is Yellow Magic Orchestra’s legendary RYDEEN, which is a jam and a half. You also get Mezase Pokemon Master -20th Anniversary- from the Pokemon anime, the theme song from GeGeGe no Kitaro, Touhou Project’s Cirno’s Perfect Math Class, the children’s song O Vreneli, and Sacred Ruin. Not a bad selection at all. Fire the game up and give them a play!


    World of Tanks Blitz – Mobile, Free

    You turn your head away from World of Tanks Blitz for a couple of months and suddenly the fate of the entire human race is on the line. Typical! Season 3 has kicked off and the stakes probably couldn’t be higher without things getting really silly. There’s a new branch of Chinese vehicles in this update, offering four heavies. On the technical side, the sound effects have gotten a little extra care, and on the balance side, Tier IX tanks have gotten a massive rebalancing. Good news? Bad news? I suppose that depends on which tanks you favor.


    Merge Mansion, Free

    Let’s swing by Merge Mansion to satisfy our obligatory matching puzzle game update of the week. As you might expect, Valentine’s Day is in the air. You can look forward to a mystery pass named Valentine’s Mystery, a special event called Double Date Disaster, and a friendly competition called Floral Frenzy. Sounds like there’s a lot going on as usual. There are new item levels for the Toolbox and Tools chain, and some bug fixes and other improvements have been implemented.


    June’s Journey: Hidden Objects, Free

    Aw heck, we’ll check up on June’s Journey too. Might as well make a proper trip of it. There’s a new Secret afoot as Bobby Talbot heads to New Orleans to try to make it as a successful musician. I wonder how that will go? Well, I’m sure he’ll at least have a good time there. Great city. There are also some new Club Mysteries to solve, and if you and your friends make a good showing you’ll get some decorations, League Points, and more. Gather the team and get to work!

    It seems like the stand-out point in this update is the new cozy winter tempo track, which certainly isn’t nothing. A little behind the curtain, the actual biggest change is in how the classic mode difficulty ranks work. Instead of Bronze, Silver, and Gold, there are now five different metals in play. Bronze I-III is now Iron I-III, Silver I is now Bronze I-III, Silver II is not Silver I-III, Silver III is now Gold I-III, and Gold has simply become Platinum. Ideally this will help smooth out the progression curve, as some were finding it a bit frustrating.


    Kimono Cats,

    You know, I’ve seen real cats wearing kimonos. It’s even cuter than you would imagine. I don’t know how well they like it, but hey, not the stupidest things humans have made cats do. Right, this update. You get ten new collectible sets, some ground textures for villages, a new Slingshot mini-game and stall, and some new options at the Village Store. There are also some quality of life improvements, but I’m not sure precisely what those amount to. Probably some UI tweaks, if I had to hazard a guess. Nothing improves the quality of one’s gaming life quite like UI upgrades.


    Dear Reader,

    I’d probably go with ‘Gentle Reader‘, but that’s okay. Dear Reader has a big new update that packs in more things to dearly read. There are six new books, and there are some interesting ones in there. The Rare Books section now allows you to choose any book at any time. You can now earn something called Asters by completing Reading Goals to get your hands on some Rare Books, too. All that, plus some balance adjustments, UI tweaks, and text edits. Sounds good!


    ANOTHER EDEN, Free

    Okay, we’ll wrap up with a quick look at what Another Eden is up to this time around. A new Episode, The Wings of Destiny (Wryz Saga II) has been added, and that’s quite a name. I’d like to buy a vowel, and not one of those weak sometimes-Y ones. New character Melpiphia is now available, and I approve of the amount of vowels in that name. Melissa (Slayer) can now be Stellar Awakened too, which is nice because she has been Stellar Sleeping quite long enough. She’ll be late for Stellar School if she keeps this up.

    Death Stranding Director’s Cut () launches beginning January 30th worldwide on iPhone 15 Pro, iPad (M1 and later), and macOS (M1 and later). Leading up to the game’s new Apple platform launch, Kojima Productions and 505 Games have been revealing more about the upcoming port. Over the weekend, the team revealed that Death Stranding Director’s Cut on iOS and Mac will share the same server as the Steam and Epic versions of the game. This means the in-game Strand system for sharing content, sending likes, and more will now see Apple hardware added to the equation. The Steam version of the game has always been quite popular, so this is good news for newcomers playing on iOS and Mac with a game world already likely full of things to discover with hints, structures, and more left by other players.

    Death Stranding Director’s Cut is also getting a limited edition Backbone One USB-C 2nd Gen controller with its own look. This is going up for pre-order tomorrow. The Apple platform launch of Death Stranding Director’s Cut from Kojima Productions launches for iPhone 15 Pro, iPad (M1 and later), and macOS (M1 and later) on January 30th for $39.99 with a pre-order discount bringing it down to $19.99.     Dear Reader has gotten a huge update this week taking it to version 3.0.0 after its last update half a year ago. This update brings in six new books, a revised Rare Books section, new Asters to be earned, and more. Pac-Man Party Royale brings in the new ghost: Blasty, new power-up: Mines, and new Maze Trap: Rotating Arrows in this week’s update out now. Junkworld brings in daily rewards with this week’s new update. These will help take on The Order. The final notable update is Puzzles & Dragons Story adding in Apple Pencil support.

The new Penacony realm is no doubt the highlight of the update which launches on February 6th, but I know many including myself will be trying to get Black Swan in Honkai Star Rail Version 2.0 ‘If One Dreams at Midnight’. As usual, pre-installation will go live a few days before the update hits on mobile and PC. This is also the update that will bring in new features as revealed before.     Alright, let’s do this one more time. Not the last time, mind you. We still have Garou left. But the age of my comparison reviews between ACA NEOGEO re-releases and the pre-existing (and still available) Dotemu-developed versions is just about at its end. Metal Slug X ACA NEOGEO ($3.99) is the latest release in Hamster and SNK’s mobile Arcade Archives initiative, and one that I know a lot of folks have been waiting for. I mean, I even told you to wait for it when Metal Slug 2 ACA NEOGEO hit. Took a little longer than I thought, but here we are. Let’s go into the details.

    If you’ve read any of previous reviews of ACA NEOGEO releases that ostensibly replace the decade-old Dotemu versions of the same games, a lot of this is going to be familiar. I will go through it anyway, because some of you might be new. Feel free to head on to the next paragraph if you deem it necessary. So, the Dotemu version of Metal Slug X. It was quite good for its time, but its time was when Iron Man 3 was ruling the movie screens and everyone was doing the Harlem Shake. Things have marched on, and despite receiving updates over the years those original mobile versions are in rough shape now. While you can still buy the Dotemu version and save a buck by doing so, you should not. The ACA NEOGEO version is superior in every meaningful way. There, that’s all settled.

    Metal Slug X is a strange game in the context of its series. While Metal Slug 2 had been very well-received and was a big success, it was hard to deny its technical issues. It suffered from severe enough slowdown that even a generation of players who had been raised on NES slowdown found it jarring at times. Developer Nazca Corporation had started work immediately on Metal Slug 3 after finishing up the second game, intending to make it the biggest and best run-and-gun action game that SNK’s NEOGEO platform would ever see. Fair beans to Nazca – the developer did more or less pull that off.

    Still, those intentions meant that the third numbered installment would take two full years to finish development, which was a very long time for a company that was in dire financial straits and needed every hit it could muster. Egads! SNK’s 1999 fiscal year was ruined! But what if… Nazca Corporation were to make some adjustments to Metal Slug 2, shift it over to the more advanced Metal Slug 3 engine, and disguise it as a new game? Oh ho ho ho ho ho! Delightfully devilish, Shin Nihon Kikaku.

    I’m being a little cute here to force the reference, but there’s no getting around the fact that Metal Slug X is a meal slapped together from the leftovers of last night’s Metal Slug 2 dinner. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, of course. This is a safe space and I think we can all admit that hot turkey sandwiches are usually better than the roast turkey the night before. It happens. And that is what happened here, too. I feel bad for people who were buying the extremely pricy AES cartridges, as they basically got Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3‘d here, but they were probably rich anyway. Metal Slug X rules. It’s a better game than Metal Slug 2 in every single way, and it’s just different enough to justify picking up even if you already own the game it’s based on.

    It’s better on a technical level, with considerably fewer instances of slowdown and substantially lower severity when it does occur. There are more enemies about, owing to the freedom the Metal Slug 3 engine offered. Aesthetically, while the stages themselves use the same themes and layouts, the time of day has been changed in most of them to make things feel fresher. The music has been arranged and altered in some stages, and the Metal Slug 3 announcer has been added. There are some new sound effects, and an improved credits sequence.

    Over on the gameplay side, there are a lot of little changes that add up to a big difference. New bosses, new enemies, new vehicles, more P.O.W.s and power-ups to find, new weapons, improved versions of existing weapons, and new behaviors for various objects and gimmicks. It’s a more difficult game, but not egregiously so. Indeed, I think the difficulty is just right in this game, with the extra heat compared to Metal Slug 2 proving to be most welcome. The pacing is really good too. I love Metal Slug 3, and it’s certainly a towering achievement in its genre. But I can’t argue with anyone who says that the last stage drags out far too long. You won’t have that issue with Metal Slug X. It’s all killer, no filler.

    My heart struggles to choose between this game and Metal Slug 3 when I’m asked which is my favorite game in this series. I can’t pick, but the point is that if you’re into this genre at all you might as well own both of them. Four dollars? Yeesh. I threw way more quarters than that into this game back in the day. I think its snappy nature also makes it more well-suited to mobile than Metal Slug 3. Now, this game does suffer from the same issues we’ve seen with all the other Metal Slug ports to mobile. If you’re not using an external controller, you’re stuck with using touch controls in a game that can be quite demanding in terms of precision. But you have unlimited credits, so it doesn’t particularly matter if you die a lot. You know, if you just want to have fun and tour the game. The other issue is that to play multiplayer, you’ll need enough controllers for everyone and a display you feel comfortable enough crowding around.

    Otherwise, it’s smooth enough sailing. You get both the Japanese and international versions of the game, tons of options to mess around with, a handy save state feature so you can stop and pick up at any point, and the usual extra modes every Hamster game comes with. The timed Caravan mode is decent here, and the score attack mode is a good challenge. There are online leaderboards to compete on as well, which can add some replay value to the game if you need more. Everything is emulated well, but there’s no surprise there. NEOGEO has been a solved problem for Hamster for a very long time now.

    If you have an external controller or don’t mind the idea of playing with touch controls, Metal Slug X is about as good a run-and-gun experience as you’re liable to get on mobile. It’s a tightly-paced, action-packed tour through some wild and wacky stages that will keep you on your toes the whole way through. One of the best games on the NEOGEO, and I’m glad we’ve got a fresh version of the game to enjoy for the next ten years.

    Over the weekend, developer Jagex revealed an official HD mode coming to Old School RuneScape on mobile and PC platforms. This was announced during the Winter Summit 2024 for the game that also had a roadmap and more revealed. The official HD mode will be available as an option for improved visuals, lighting, effects, textures, and more as shown in the announcement trailer. The trailer also confirms that you will be able to switch between the new and old style easily. A release date for the Old School RuneScape Official HD mode is yet to be announced.     The official Old School RuneScape HD Mode announcement also confirms that players will be able to use the 117Scape and HDOS after the official HD mode releases. There has been no policy change on alternative clients. With this update, the team will be able to do more with the game client as well.     Another couple of weeks have passed, and that means we were about due for another balancing update for Marvel Snap (Free). Well, it’s here! And it has good news for some players and bad news for others. Developer Second Dinner doesn’t seem terribly afraid of touching recently-released cards the way they once were, and we can see that on full display here. As usual, we’ll go through all of the balance changes and touch a little on what they mean. Weep for Blob.

    A whopping eight cards have been adjusted in this OTA update. The good news is that it’s more buff-heavy than nerf-heavy, but that’s going to be cold comfort to some. Let’s start with the big one: Blob. To be fair, I think we all saw this coming. Blob was ripping up the carpet in almost every match-up, and all anyone could do to stop him was to pull a Shang-Chi or Shadow King out of their butts at the last minute. Blob goes from a 6-Cost 4-Power card to a 6-Cost 0-Power card, and his ability has been hit as well. Before, it would merge the rest of your deck into Blob and add its Power to him. It now just merges cards from your deck into Blob until he gains 15 or more Power. Yes, the days of an effortless 50+ Power Blob are over. A swift and heavy action, but probably a necessary one.

    Okay, on to the buffs. First, the cards that are gaining a bit of power. Destroyer goes from 6-Cost 15-Power to 6-Cost 16-Power, Viper goes from 3-Cost 4-Power to 3-Cost 5-Power, Selene goes from 1-Cost -1-Power to 1-Cost 2-Power, Elektra goes from 1-Cost 1-Power to 1-Cost 2-Power, and Hercules goes from 4-Cost 6-Power to 4-Cost 7-Power. I think the interesting bits here are Selene and Hercules, as they’re both very recent cards. Herc’s getting adjusted mere days after he left the Spotlight, which is a bit quick by any measure. Selene seems like she didn’t play out at all the way Second Dinner expected her to. Hopefully she’ll see more use now.

    There are two other buffed cards in this update. Dazzler gets a simple change in her cost, going from 3-Cost 2-Power to 2-Cost 2-Power. This means she is no longer in the Silver Surfer circle, but I don’t think she was seeing a whole lot of play there anyway. Maybe she’ll do better at a lower cost, but I feel like she’s still going to struggle. Some cards just can’t seem to get any traction, and Dazzler is one of them. She probably needs a boost to the power she gains from full locations, but I can understand the team not wanting to accidentally overshoot that.

    Dagger is the other card to get a non-standard boost, but it’s a less obvious one. Before, she was a 2-Cost 2-Power card with an ability that saw her gain +2 Power for every enemy card at a location she moved to. She’s now a 2-Cost 0-Power card, but her ability gains her +3 Power for every enemy card at a location she moves to. The update notes point out that this makes her weaker to Shadow King, but I suspect it won’t be that big of an issue. Unlike with the Dazzler change, I think this one will actually make a good difference for Dagger. She wasn’t that unpopular to begin with, and this extra kick in the pants should help her edge out some competing Move-based cards.

    That’s the lot for this time. It’s mostly good stuff, though I will again say that it’s probably not a good thing that new cards are having to be tweaked so soon after release. It’s not a great feeling to spend resources on a card and have it nerfed, or to pass on a card only to see it buffed after you can’t get it anymore. Maintaining the balance of the meta is of course vital, but it’s wild that the team didn’t see certain cards like Blob coming. Well, it is what it is. What do you think of these changes?

    Red Nexus Games’ pachinko roguelike Peglin (Free) has hit 0.9.44 with many Roundrel-focused changes and additions in its first official update for 2024. If you’ve not kept up with the game lately, we had an update go live at the end of December already, and it looks like Red Nexus Games is continuing to bring the mobile version of the game updates soon after the PC version sees them. The focus of the update is Roundrel with many new relics for it, a new Boss relic, new scenario, new scenario relic, changes for Refreshircle and Critsoballos, and other adjustments.     Back in April last year, Super Meat Boy Forever ($0.99) finally hit mobile following its announcement back in 2014. The conversion was amazing, but it had some issues. Today, Super Meat Boy Forever on mobile has gotten a surprise update bringing in support for The Daily Grind and Quick Play. The Daily Grind is a new randomly generated level that changes daily. Your aim here is to get to the top of the leaderboards. Quick Play lets you play a level from all of the chunks in a chapter with potentially new things.     The Planet Hulk season of Marvel Snap (Free) has had a week to settle in now, and that means we were about due for another update. And hey, it’s here! How about that? As usual, it’s mainly wrapped up in balance tweaks, adjusting various characters to react to the state of the meta. There are a few other things in here, and we’ll go through all of them as we always do. It’s a bit of a bloodbath for some recently dominant cards, so let’s check out the damage.

    First up is Loki, who has been pretty strong ever since his debut a few months back. There have been tweaks to other cards to try to curb him a little and his stats were even hit a bit, but the time has come for his ability to get adjusted. It’s a very minor change, but one that will affect his synergy with The Collector considerably. Basically, he still fills your hand with cards from your opponent’s deck at a -1 Cost, but instead of replacing your hand (which would add to Collector’s Power), it now transforms it (which does not). There’s a bit of a change behind the scenes to facilitate this, but it’s a bit in the weeds to explain and doesn’t affect many other cards for now. Loki is still powerful, but the easiest deck with him up until now is going to need a bit of tinkering.

    Another recent card getting a bit of a nerf is Ms. Marvel. She’s another one that has quickly found a place in many of the best decks, and I suppose it’s no surprise the bat has come for her. First, she’s losing a point of power, going from 4-Cost 5-Power to 4-Cost 4-Power. Next, her ability has been tweaked. It now requires at least two cards at a location with no repeated costs for the +5 Power effect to kick in. Not too serious, but again certain decks might have to rethink things.

    We’re not done with nerfing recent cards yet, I’m afraid. Annihilus decks have been causing plenty of trouble, and that means even he isn’t safe. Like Ms. Marvel, he’s dropping a point of Power. His 5-Cost 7-Power is now 5-Cost 6-Power, which is a small change. His ability now only affects your cards with less than 0 Power, too. He’ll still be useful for mailing negatives to your opponents, but that’s where the line is drawn for now.

    Over to the buffs, we’ve got Dracula going from 4-Cost 0-Power to 4-Cost 1-Power, Angel’s ability now allowing him to fly out of your hand in addition to your deck when a card is destroyed, and Quake now swapping the positions of the other two locations regardless of where she is played.

    Kingpin has received some changes, along with his associated location at Fisk Tower. Neither will destroy cards to move to their location anymore. Kingpin goes from 3-Cost 4-Power to 2-Cost 3-Power, and his ability now afflicts any card that moves to his location on any turn with -2 Power. Fisk Tower similarly afflicts any card that moves there with -4 Power. In some cases, this might be worse than destruction.

    As usual, there are a pile of bug fixes and other behind-the-scenes adjustments in this update, but that stuff is less sexy so I’ll leave it for you to look up if you’re interested.     Ahead of next week’s launch, Niantic and Capcom have detailed the Monster Hunter Now (Free) Descent of the Azure King event and confirmed new in-app purchase bundles will be available to celebrate the event. This event was revealed in the official January 2024 events announcement post. Azure Rathalos will appear from January 15th at 9 AM until January 21st at midnight local time. Rathalos and Azure Rathalos will both have boosted appearance rates from January 19th to January 21st in forest habitats. There will be event quests from the 19th until the 21st letting you earn the Azure King medal in-game. To celebrate the event, two special packs will be available with Special Carving Knives and other items. There will be one in-game and exclusive to the web store.

    If you’ve completed chapter 13 of the main story and unlocked Rathalos hunts, Azure Rathalos will start appearing normally. If you haven’t done that yet, Azure Rathalos will only be present during the appearance rate boost period. While we don’t know the new moveset yet, if Azure Rathalos is like in the console games, it will be weak to Dragon and Ice element. Azure Rathalos is much more mobile than the regular Rathalos and is more annoying to deal with as a melee weapon user in the main games. I’m curious to see how this plays out in Monster Hunter Now next week.

    Another month, another complete overhaul in the hierarchy of Marvel Snap (Free) decks. Between balance adjustments and some powerful new cards, pretty much everything has changed from the last time we put together a guide for you all. Is it a good thing? A bad thing? I don’t know. I’m only here to show you how to win. Remember as ever: today’s winning deck could be tomorrow’s flat champagne. These guides are one way to keep your finger on the pulse of the scene, but they aren’t the only method you should be using.

    Note that most of these decks are the best of the best at this point in time. They assume you have access to a full range of cards. I’ll once again be including the five strongest Marvel Snap decks of the moment, and I’ll throw in a couple more decks that don’t need things that are too hard to get and are just sort of fun to play with. You know, a little variety and all of that.

    So yes, as mentioned, some big balance changes this last month. Some decks have had to go back to the drawing board almost completely, and the new cards from the Marvels and Hellfire Gala events have given players even further reasons to rethink the cards they’re including. The Planet Hulk event will probably see a lot more changes, but only time will tell how that will all settle. Let’s see what’s sitting at the top of the rankings at the moment.

    Thanos & Lockjaw

    Included Cards: Lockjaw, Killmonger, Wave, Shang-Chi, Devil Dinosaur, Leech, Vision, Blob, Thanos, Skaar, Magneto, Death

    Despite the name this carries, this deck has a lot to do with one of the biggest cards to hit in the Hellfire Gala season: Blob. The strategy here is a familiar one. Get Lockjaw out, and start throwing low cost cards (hello Infinity Gems) at him to try to pull one or more of your very powerful cards. There’s plenty of insurance packed in here, including Killmonger to clear the Gems when you don’t need them anymore, Wave to get a strong card out earlier if Lockjaw doesn’t come through, and Shang-Chi and Leech to counter your opponent’s cards. You’ll need a lot of rare cards to pull this one together, but if you can? Oh boy.

    The Infinaut & She-Hulk

    Included Cards: Sunspot, Nebula, Misty Knight, Shocker, Magik, Caiera, Cyclops, High Evolutionary, Leech, She-Hulk, Hulk, The Infinaut

    Here’s another new card that is already making waves: Caiera. She protects your 1-Cost and 6-Cost cards, making cards like Sunspot and Nebula almost foolproof plays. Anyway, this is an interesting deck because it relies on building a few foundations and then skipping turns to make that excess Energy work for you. Magik gives you an extra turn to engage in such shenanigans, which should be more than enough time to get She-Hulk and either Hulk or The Infinaut out there. And again, with Caiera in tow those 6-Cost monsters are absolutely unstoppable.

    Darkhawk & Friends

    Included Cards: Korg, Iceman, Shadow King, Zabu, Jeff, Rogue, Rock Slide, Darkhawk, Ms. Marvel, Iron Lad, Leech, Doctor Doom

    This is relatively close to a popular deck from last month, and it’s a familiar play for long-time Snappers. Stuff your opponent’s deck with Korg and Rock Slide to pump up Darkhawk, and use the rest of your cards to mess with your opponent’s strategy as much as possible. No matter who Iron Lad copies, it’ll be helpful. You’re probably noticing Leech cropping up often this month. He’s a great counter to some monster last-turn plays like Blob, and as far as insurance goes he’s about the best thing going right now.

    Lockdown

    Included Cards: Nebula, Echo, Iceman, Jeff, Silk, Storm, Mobius M. Mobius, Ms. Marvel, Iron Lad, Vision, Alioth, Doctor Doom

    Nothing too new here. It’s mostly the same Lockdown type we’ve seen for ages, with a few tweaks to adjust for the latest balance changes. Use Storm and Nebula to persuade your opponent to put their cards where you want them to, use your moving cards to capture locked locations, hope Iron Lad copies one of your big-pants cards, and finish up with either Alioth or Doctor Doom as the situation calls for. You’ll have to be a little careful because this deck doesn’t really have any good counters for certain decks and cards. You’ll have to take the initiative and keep your opponent on their heels.

    The Living Tribunal

    Included Cards: Zabu, Ravonna Renslayer, Mystique, Magik, Cosmo, Jubilee, Super Skrull, Ms. Marvel, Iron Lad, Iron Man, Onslaught, The Living Tribunal

    This is an interesting one. The Living Tribunal is one of those cards that is played infrequently enough that a lot of players don’t see it coming. The idea is to pump up the power as much as you can at one or two locations, preferably one where your opponent isn’t focusing. You can dissuade them from playing there with Cosmo. Zabu, Ravonna, and Jubilee will help you get your big cards out earlier, and Iron Lad will again be helpful if he copies just about anyone. Ideally you can get Onslaught out to boost the power output of Ms. Marvel and Iron Lad, then play The Living Tribunal on your last turn to likely take all the locations you need in order to win.


    And now, a couple of fun decks for those still climbing up the collection ladder or who simply want to try something different.

    Black Knight Discard

    Included Cards: Black Knight, Blade, Zabu, Jeff, Rogue, Lady Sif, Ghost Rider, Shang-Chi, Ms. Marvel, Sera, Magneto, The Infinaut

    Fun with Discard! Obviously, the aim here is to time it so that you play Black Knight and then discard either Magneto or The Infinaut so that you get a 4-Cost Ebony Blade with big-pants power. Then you can use Ghost Rider to bring that big card back into play on top of it. Throw in Jeff, Rogue, and Shang-Chi as insurance policies and you have a deck that takes a little attention to play well but offers great rewards. So far this is my favorite use of Black Knight, a card I want to find more uses for than I generally do.

    Budget Big Cards

    Included Cards: Sunspot, Agent 13, The Collector, America Chavez, Armor, Sentinel, Cosmo, Jubilee, Moon Girl, White Queen, Devil Dinosaur, The Infinaut

    Another revisit of a past budget deck, and the only real change here is what America Chavez’s role is in it. Previously, she was your final turn surprise if you couldn’t get Infinaut out. Now, she just boosts the card on the top of your deck. Arguably, this is more useful for new players. While she used to provide solid late-game punch, she’ll now have more of an effect earlier in the game. The same old strategy applies here. Agent 13, Moon Girl, and White Queen feed your Collector and Devil Dino. Jubilee hopefully gets lucky and pulls something cool. Cosmo messes with your opponent and helps you control where they play. Armor protects your big guns and Sunspot from destroyers. It will take you far enough when you’re starting out.

    And that’s it for this month’s deck guide. We’ll return with another one of these in February to see where things stand after the Planet Hulk event has fully played out and a month’s worth of balance changes have done their thing.     The holidays are more or less officially over for everyone now, and folks are heading back into the office and trying to get into the swing of things. The hard-working developers behind Marvel Snap (Free) at Second Dinner are back on the job, and they’ve decided to share the current roadmap for the game. As usual, it’s divided into things that are coming soon, things that are in development, and things that are still in concept. Let’s run through what we can expect in the coming months from the game.

    There’s actually a fair bit on the immediate horizon. First up, some improvements to albums. Albums are relatively new, but the idea here is to add more albums and more varieties of them. Next, you’ll soon be able to choose which effects and borders you want to use with your cards. You won’t have to keep extras around if you have a preference for the appearance of an earlier look in the evolutionary chain, in other words. Collectible borders are also being worked on, which if nothing else is another thing that could be monetized. Okay, I’m a little cynical about that kind of thing. Still nice to be able to customize things more.

    Also coming soon are in-game events, which will come in a variety of forms. Basically just some extra things to do beyond what’s already in the game, with one example offered being called Leagues. You would be matched against a small pool of players and compete for who can get the most cubes during the event, with rewards going to the winner. Sounds neat. Another thing to keep players coming back is the idea of Character Mastery, where you’re given special rewards for achieving certain conditions with specific cards and characters. This is one way the upcoming additional Reactions will be issued, apparently. There will also be character-specific challenges to tackle, with the idea of getting Deadpool up to 100 Power in a single match being presented as one possible task. Again, pretty cool.

    As far as stuff that is in development now but not quite ready for release, we’ve got some social features like clans, the previously-mentioned collectible borders, and some additional event types. There’s also an interesting feature called Booster Vats which will help players earn the Boosters they want after completing matches. Finally, the in concept items are relatively familiar ones: a new game mode, some new boards, Ultimate Variant evolution, and new card mechanics. One new one on the list is the idea of clan competitions, which I assume will work exactly the way it sounds.

    That’s about it for the new Marvel Snap roadmap. It doesn’t seem like there’s anything massive coming soon, but we’re over a year past its global launch so I imagine we’ll mostly be seeing refinements with the occasional surprise from here on.     PlatinumGames just announced that its Apple Arcade exclusive action game World of Demons () will be leaving the service on January 18th. If you never followed it before, World of Demons was originally a free to play game set for mobile, but it was changed to be a premium game for Apple Arcade. It even had a soft launch in select countries before going to Apple Arcade back in 2021. World of Demons brings players into a world of yokai with a gorgeous aesthetic. Since launching on Apple Arcade, it never saw any major updates, and I always wondered if added story content or battles were planned. Watch the trailer for it below:

    If you’d like to play World of Demons before it leaves Apple Arcade, you can grab it here until January 18th. It will be unplayable for everyone from February 1st. As of this writing, a port to any other platform or a standalone iOS release hasn’t been announced by PlatinumGames. I hope it does see a port to Steam and Switch in the future though.     Following today’s release of three games on Apple Arcade, Apple has revealed the (seemingly) two games coming to the service next month on February 1st, 2024. The games are the unique 3v3 online action game featuring animal heroes piloting powerful mechanized armors in BEAST: Bio Exo Arena Suit Team and new word puzzler Words in Progress. Both of them arrive on the same day, and Apple has also confirmed that many games will be updated leading into next month.     While not really my favorite genre, I’ll give BEAST: Bio Exo Arena Suit Team a shot when it launches. I’m more interested in Words in Progress to see how another developer tries to do something interesting with word games. The puzzler includes asynchronous multiplayer, multiple language support, an endless mode, and more when it launches. Apple has also announced updates for Crayola Create and Play+ coming January 12th, Jetpack Joyride 2 getting the Hamster Ball Vehicle, and other content updates planned for Cut the Rope 3, Snake.io+, Puzzle & Dragons Story, Cityscapes: Sim Builder, stitch., WHAT THE CAR?, Samba de Amigo: Party-To-Go, and more coming.

    Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat (), the mobile entry in the superb Devil May Cry series from Nebula Joy and Capcom, has always looked great, but it finally feels like a modern Devil May Cry game thanks to its new theme song. The Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat theme song “Fire Inside” has been composed and producer by Casey Edwards (Devil Trigger, Bury the Light), features vocals by Victor Borba (Bury the Light), drums by Anup Sastry (Bury the Light, Exohuman), and mixed by Zakk Cervini at MDDN Studios. If you’ve not played Devil May Cry 5 or Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition, you absolutely should. Devil May Cry 5 is one of the best action games ever, and the best in the series. I’m glad that they all got back to do a song for Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat. “Fire Inside” is superb. Watch the video for it below:
