  • Prince Harry Has “A Clear Conscience” Amid Burgeoning Reconciliation with King Charles, Visit to Ukraine

    When Prince Harry and his father, King Charles III, recently met in London, royal watchers wondered whether a reconciliation was on the horizon, and with it, a new leaf for the ruler’s second son. However, Harry recently gave an interview containing some searing insights into his past and family, in addition to commenting on some of the recent years’ controversies around him.

    Harry, who turns 41 Monday, sat for an interview with UK media outlet The Guardian, which has been critical of the monarchy and even, in a 2000 editorial, advocated for its abolishment. In 2023, within weeks of Charles’ coronation, the paper also published an investigation into the monarch’s finances.

    The Guardian followed Prince Harry on every step of his surprise trip to Ukraine last week. He was invited by Superhumans, an organization that provides prosthetics and rehabilitation programs to soldiers and civilians injured in the conflict.

    The trip to Kyiv was partly for Invictus Games business: The veteran-focused sports foundation has taken center stage in Ukraine since the first team participated three years ago. Harry and his colleagues met with injured veterans and their families, as well as those working in the veteran space, and were confronted with shocking figures and stories: more than 130,000 people with serious wounds, often facial mutilation or disability, and a war that seems endless.

    The Guardian‘s account of traveling with Prince Harry shows a man deeply immersed in his role as an ambassador for the Invictus Games Foundation, and committed to understanding the conflict in the Ukraine. The story begins with a description of the journey to Kyiv, an overnight ride from Medyka to the Polish-Ukrainian border that. Though he was traveling on business, the interview also shows another, more informal side of Harry’s personality. He reveals that he doesn’t like to pose for photographs and isn’t fond of cycling, joking that he has “a bony ass.” He boxes for exercise instead: “Hitting the hell out of a bag,” he told the paper, helps him relieve stress.

    According to the article, Harry was jovial during the train ride, walking around in socks and cracking dad jokes. In public, however, he maintains a confident voice and natural charm with strangers. When alone, he speaks softly, listens, and asks questions about people and politics.

    Next stop: Kyiv. After his visit to London, during which he saw father King Charles III for the first time in nearly 19 months, Prince Harry headed straight to the Ukraine for a previously unannounced trip. The Guardian reported that the Duke of Sussex traveled to the Ukrainian capital city for philanthropic reason: He and several members of his Invictus Games foundation met with servicemen and women wounded since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

    Harry co-founded the Invictus Games in 2014 with the hope of supporting war veterans and wounded soldiers through community and sport. Three years later, the Ukrainian team competed in the Invictus Games for the first time. Harry pledged in an interview with the Guardian to do “everything possible” to help Ukrainians affected by the fighting.

    “We can continue to humanize the people involved in this war and what they are going through,” he continued of his goals. “We have to keep it in the forefront of people’s minds. I hope this trip will help to bring it home to people because it’s easy to become desensitized to what has been going on.” One of his objectives, he said, is to provide assistance to all regions of the country for the re-education of soldiers, a plan he will discuss with Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko and veterans. He also plans to visit the National Museum of the History of Ukraine During the Second World War on the trip.

    Last April, Harry made surprise visit to the city of Lviv with a delegation from his foundation, during which he visited the Superhumans Trauma Center, which treats soldiers and civilians affected by the war. He had already met the facility’s director, Olga Rudnieva, in the United States. He met with Rudnieva on his first visit, and she invited him for this second trip. “I bumped into Olga in New York,” he said. “It was a chance meeting and I asked her what I could do to help. She said, ‘the biggest impact you have is coming to Kyiv.’ I had to check with my wife and the British government to make sure it was OK. Then the official invitation came.”

    “In Lviv, you don’t see much of the war. It is so far west. This is the first time we will see the real destruction of the war.”

    The Duke of Sussex has fond memories of the Ukrainian team’s participation in the Invictus Games: “It was remarkable. Every one of the participants had a journey to get to those games, but nobody from any of the other competing nations was going back to war. That is why the Ukrainians stood out. Everyone felt an immense connection to them. Some of the competitors were being pulled off the battlefield and were going back to the battlefield. It means so much to us, because it means so much to them.”

    Ukraine’s Minister of Veterans Affairs, Natalia Kalmykova, praised Prince Harry and Invictus’s commitment to the veterans: “It’s thanks to our relationship with the Invictus Games Foundation that we established, and continue to develop, the role of sports in recovery in Ukraine and why it’s included in the veteran policy strategy.”

    Prince Harry is getting support from past recipients of the Pat Tillman award!

    As Perezcious readers know, the Duke of Sussex has been taking heat ever since ESPN announced he’d be receiving the Pat Tillman Award for Service at the 2024 ESPYs later this month. Much of the hate has been coming from the former NFL star and war hero’s mother Mary Tillman, too! Mary has claimed the royal wasn’t an appropriate choice for the honor and tons of critics joined in on her frustrations. While ESPN has held its ground, now former award winners are speaking out in support of the prince, as well!

    On Tuesday, Jake Wood, a U.S. Marine and former college football player who won the award in 2018 (top inset), told TMZ that he believes the 39-year-old is a “natural fit,” as the outlet put it, for the honor. He noted that Harry’s service in the British military and dedication to veterans via the Invictus Games makes him deserving.

    In fact, Jake thinks Meghan Markle‘s husband is a good choice considering he’s dedicated his life to helping war heroes when he didn’t have to!! As that outlet noted, the former college football star argued that most modern-day British royals could choose to live their lives in hundreds of different ways — and not in the military!

    It’s true! Harry never had to create the Invictus Games Foundation or support other causes that affect veterans, such as shining a spotlight on PTSD and mental health issues so many deal with. And yet, he’s done a lot of great work for so many servicemen and women around the world!

    Jake also slammed the theory that Harry is only being awarded the honor to boost ESPN’s ratings, which Pat McAfee argued. Jake pointed out that the award show is already filled with celebs, so it’s not like they need the extra attention. While the award does usually go to a lesser-known figure, he stressed that the father of two’s own experience serving makes him stand out from other A-listers.

    U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Israel Del Toro Jr. (lower inset), who got the honor in 2017, also thinks the Spare author is “worthy.” Per TMZ, Del Toro was said to be “looking forward: to watching Harry follow in his footsteps. Nice!

    Harry and Israel go way back, too. Not only did they both serve in Afghanistan, where the Air Force master sergeant was wounded in 2005, but Del Toro Jr. competed in the inaugural Invictus Games in 2014. Two years later, he took home a gold medal for the track and field event shot put. So, he’s seen the work Harry is doing firsthand!

    Interestingly, though, just because the men are standing up for the controversial figure, it doesn’t mean they don’t have some compassion for Mary. Jake told the outlet that the late athlete’s mother has “every right to defend her son’s legacy however she sees fit” while noting that he doesn’t speak for the Tillman family. Israel felt similarly, though he pointed out that the award is all about service and, therefore, Harry does fulfill that requirement.

    Prince Harry is set to receive a big award next month, but one fan in particular is NOT happy about it — and that’s the mother of US hero and former NFL player Pat Tillman, for whom the award is named. Pat was a NFL safety who enlisted in the Army after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, by the way.

    Here’s the deal. The Duke of Sussex was chosen to receive the Pat Tillman Award for Service at the 2024 ESPYs for his work making the world a better place through the Invictus Games and military service in Afghanistan. On the honor, the 39-year-old said per the New York Post:

    “This one is for our entire service community.”

    Unfortunately, not everyone agrees!

    Pat’s own mother Mary Tillman is now “shocked” and dismayed by the selection, telling DailyMail.com on Saturday:

    “I am shocked as to why they would select such a controversial and divisive individual to receive the award.”

    She argued:

    “There are recipients that are far more fitting. There are individuals working in the veteran community that are doing tremendous things to assist veterans.”

    And Harry’s not?? The Invictus Games is a multi-sport, Paralympic-styled competition for wounded or injured servicemen and women, both those serving and veterans. It seems to be shining a bright spotlight on the veteran community. Just saying!

    But, regardless of what she thinks of his Invictus Games, Mary complained that the Spare author is already famous and therefore the attention the award provides him will do little to help him gain more support for his missions. Meanwhile, a lesser-known recipient may have benefited from the brighter spotlight. That’s fair. But, TBH, many awards go to people who are already well-established… Just think of the Oscars, etc. They’re picking among the best of the best, you know?

    But Mary’s not alone in feeling frustrated over this selection. ESPN analyst Pat McAfee complained on his talk show:

    “It’s going to Prince Harry, who I don’t even think is a Prince anymore, right? He said don’t call me that? See, why does the ESPYs do this s**t? … This is like actually the most embarrassing thing I’ve seen in my entire life.”

    Yeesh!

    The backlash has gotten so bad that there’s even a Change.org petition with more than 15,000 signatures as of this writing. Whoa! See HERE. In support of the cause, people argued:

    “Pat Tillman sacrificed his life for duty and country! Harry walked away from duty and country & spit on his commander in chief, country, duty & family on his way out. All for a Hollywood dream! I’m appalled as an American that you would give him this award. It now means nothing!”

    “There are others far more deserving. This is a slap in the face.”

    However, there were some supporters online, writing on X (Twitter):

    “People who are reacting poorly to this (those who don’t just hate him for the sin of protecting his wife and kids from the UK establishment) need to watch Heart of Invictus on Netflix. You’ll understand all that he’s done for veterans, including in the US.”

    “Well deserved Prince Harry. Bravo”

    The award ceremony will be held on July 11. Harry hasn’t reacted to the controversy yet.

    It’s official: Montecito, California resident Prince Harry is apparently headed back to his hometown. The royal will be part of a London-set celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games Foundation, the organization announced Sunday. If he appears in person at the May 8 event, this will be his first visit to England since a whirlwind 24-hour trip in February after King Charles III announced his cancer diagnosis.

    Harry founded the Invictus Games after his deployment in Afghanistan, a multi-sport event intended to bring visibility to injured and disabled service people and veterans. He’s remained closely tied to it in the years since, regularly attending its events and supporting friends made through the organization.

    Earlier this month, the Games announced that it would hold a special Service of Thanksgiving to mark its decade of work. It was unclear, however, if Harry would attend the St. Paul’s Cathedral event in person. That’s because a few weeks after his February visit, the Duke of Sussex lost his legal battle for taxpayer-funded police protection while in the UK. Harry had previously said that without police protection, he’s unsafe in that country; he also said that he thinks his wife, Meghan Markle, and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, could also be in danger.

    It had been rumored that due to those safety concerns, Harry would attend the event remotely, either by providing a pre-taped address or appearing via video link. The announcement from the Invictus Games leaves room for that WFH out, saying only that “We will be joined by our Patron, Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, actor Damian Lewis, and members of the worldwide Invictus Community to mark the occasion.”

    But “joined” can mean many things in the era of constant Teams and Zooms, so automatically assuming that the royal will be hopping on a plane might be premature. (Vanity Fair has reached out to the Invictus Games Foundation for clarification.)

    But if he does go, it will be at an auspicious time. He’d be landing just after his father makes his first official appearance after his cancer treatments, a public engagement with Queen Camilla during which the pair will visit a cancer treatment center, where they’ll meet with patients and doctors.

    His brother, Prince William, has also just returned to public duties, following the announcement that his wife, Kate Middleton, is recovering from cancer treatments of her own. If Harry does, indeed, make the trip, all eyes will be on his moves outside the St. Paul’s event. If he visits family, headlines will certainly be abundant—and if he doesn’t…well, let’s not even contemplate that.

    As a part of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s trip to Canada for an Invictus Games event, the prince opened up about his recent trip to the UK to visit with his father after King Charles III announced a cancer diagnosis. In conversation with Good Morning America’s Will Reeve, he explained his whirlwind 24-hour trip to London, where he spent time with the king at Clarence House.

    “I jumped on a plane and went to go see him as soon as I could,” he said. “Look, I love my family. The fact that I was able to get on a plane and go and see him and spend any time with him, I’m grateful for that.” When asked about his outlook on the king’s health. Harry declined to comment. “That stays between me and him,” he said.

    Harry added that his experience with the Invictus Games, the sporting competition for injured veterans he founded in 2014, helped him understand that illness can help bring a family together. “Throughout all of these families, I see it on a day-to-day basis, again, the strength of the family unit coming together,” the prince said. “So, yeah, I think any illness, any sickness, brings families together. I see it time and time again, and that makes me very happy.”

    The Prince mentioned that he is also focused on his own young family, which includes son Archie, 4, and daughter Lilibet, 2. “They have got an incredible sense of humor and make us laugh and keep us grounded every single day, like most kids do,” he said. “I’m just grateful to be a dad.”

    Harry and Meghan traveled to Canada on Wednesday to attend the One Year to Go training camp event for the 2025 Games in Vancouver and Whistler, which will introduce a handful of adaptive winter sports alongside the usual competitions in basketball, swimming, and sitting volleyball, and wheelchair rugby. On their first day, Meghan and Harry joined a group of veterans who were practicing adaptive skiing at a camp in Whistler, and Harry even got in a sit-ski to try it out for a run, before later meeting with a group of First Nations artists who designed the logos for the 2025 events. 

    On Thursday, Harry took Reeve along as he got on a skeleton bobsled and went down the ice track headfirst, hitting a top speed of 99 kilometers an hour (60 mph). Afterward, the prince explained why he likes to get involved with the competitors at the game.  “To see the smiles on their faces and then to hear the stories at the end and the excitement and just the happiness, that’s what this is all about,” he said. “This is what it’s all about and as long as it’s safe, we will continue to facilitate these kinds of opportunities for them.”

    During yet another dramatic week for the British royal family, UK media reports that WME has been holding crisis talks with its high-profile clients Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

    Despite Harry’s victory in the UK’s High Court on Friday – where he won a $180,000 payout in damages for having his phone hacked by Mirror Group Newspapers – the week has been chequered with reports that a string of failed projects and brand partnerships have left the couple complaining of a vendetta being waged against them.

    The UK’s Express newspaper quotes one insider telling them that, despite the success of the sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, the huge figures for their at-home Netflix documentary series in December 2022 and the record-breaking sales of Harry’s memoir Spare earlier this year, “There have been talks held with high profile brands that didn’t lead to anything but should have done. Those brands then actively courted other members of the family.”

    The insider adds: “Both Harry and Meghan often wore Dior and were at one point huge fans of the brand,” the source said. “Harry wore a [Dior] suit to the Coronation and the Sussexes were starting to build up their partnership with the fashion house.

    “Then the focus shifted towards Camilla and other members of the family. To add salt to the wounds, the actress playing Kate Middleton [in The Crown‘s final series on Netflix] was announced as the new face of the brand. It was all very suspicious timing.”

    Markle has been with WME since April 2023, but no new projects have materialized thus far. Instead, the couple’s $20m contract with Spotify has been ended, with exec Bill Simmons quoted calling them “grifters,” and Markle’s pet doc project Pearl has been cancelled by Netflix. The Express’s source added: “The team doesn’t appear to know what to do at this point. The consensus now is to try and repair the damage done to the Royal Family and hope that link will help them out of the doldrums.”

    Prince Harry and Meghan Markle participated in the time-honored tradition of bleisure—the combination of traveling for business and leisure, that is—and reportedly popped over to Portugal for a few days after the close of this year’s Invictus Games.

    Local outlet Nova Gente first reported the royals’ three-day jaunt, tacked onto the end of their duties at the games, which Harry co-founded to honor wounded and ill veterans and active military personnel and give a chance to compete in various sporting events. According to translation from Page Six, Harry and Meghan jetted from Dusseldorf to Lisbon, Portugal on September 16, then headed to CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club in what Nova Gente called a “mega-secret operation.” (Vanity Fair has reached out to reps for the Sussexes for comment.)

    During their reported three-day stay, the Sussexes spent time with Harry’s cousin Princess Eugenie and her husband, Jack Brooksbank. Brooksbank works at the resort in a marketing and sales role, and he and Eugenie, along with their two sons, typically split their time between Portugal and London.

    An unnamed “insider” told the local outlet that “the choice of this location would have been related to a possible invitation from Harry’s cousin, Princess Eugenie who, since the start of last year, has been spending a lot of time in this part of the Alentejo because of her husband’s work.”

    Since resigning their roles as working senior royals in a shock move in 2020, Harry and Meghan’s relationship with much of the royal family has been strained, to say the least: Harry observed the first anniversary of his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II’s passing alone recently, and he attended father King Charles III’s coronation, but didn’t participate in the ceremonial festivities and swiftly exited the U.K. after. Markle did not attend, despite wig-related theories to the contrary. The Sussex’s relationship with Eugenie and her family, however, remains close. She has supported the couple personally and professionally after their exit, participating in their Archewell Foundation charity, and has hung out with them many times, including attending the Super Bowl with Harry last year. (Brooksbanks and Markle stayed behind in Montecito for that one.) She was also reportedly one of the first members of the royal family to be told when Meghan and Harry started dating in 2016.

    “🌟What a special moment! 🌟,” the nonprofit Diakonie Düsseldorf Karriere shared on Instagram, along with a photo of Markle posing with the women and children at TrébeCafé.

    “For our mother-child group clients, the surprise was big when Meghan Markle was suddenly at the door. Although we announced a special guest, the young women were not expecting the Duchess 😊,” the caption continued, translated from German. “The visitors to the TrebeCafé openly told the Duchess about their earlier life on the street, how they got to know the TrebeCafé and how they got back on track with the support of the staff.

    Last year, Meghan Markle played a game of ping pong with Prince Harry in a video promoting the 2023 Invictus Games in Düsseldorf. Now, a spokesperson for the couple has confirmed that the duchess will be joining her husband in the German city for the games, which begin on September 9 and run through September 16. 

    “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are delighted to attend the Invictus Games 2023 in Düsseldorf,” a statement read, per People. “The Duke will be in attendance throughout the entirety of the games and will be joined by the Duchess shortly after the games begin.”

    Before the games begin, Prince Harry will be attending the WellChild Awards in the UK on September 7. According to the charity, which supports children with disabilities and their charities, Harry will be on hand to give awards to this year’s winners. WellChild has counted Harry as their patron since 2007. Though Meghan has joined the duke at the annual awards ceremony in the past, Page Six reports that she will miss this year’s event due to previous commitments with the couple’s children Archie and Lilibet.

    This year’s Invictus Games will be the sixth iteration of the event, following 2022’s games in The Hague. During the commencement event, Meghan introduced her husband before he gave a speech that touched on his experiences as a father and the resilience of the competitors from Ukraine, just a few months after the country was invaded by Russia.

    In an interview at the time, Prince Harry told People about how his experience in the military inspired him to create the games in 2014. “When I was in the Army, I promised myself I would be out before having a wife and kids, because I couldn’t imagine the heartache of being apart for so long during deployment, the risk of possibly getting injured, and the reality that my family’s lives could be changed forever if that happened,” he said. “Every member of the Invictus community has experienced varying degrees of these things. I have tremendous respect for what they and their families sacrifice in the name of service.”

    Netflix confirmed on Wednesday that the series is set to premiere on August 30, releasing the brand new trailer.

    Harry says in the clip, “The games doesn’t focus on what causes the injury, but really about the recovery and how to be part of a community again.”

    A synopsis reads, “The series follows a group of extraordinary competitors from around the globe, all service members who have experienced life-changing injuries or illnesses, on their road to the Invictus Games The Hague.

The series also follows the organizers as they work to prepare for the Games alongside each nation’s team, supporting the competitors as well as their friends and families.”

    The “Heart of Invictus” trailer comes ahead of the 2023 Invictus Games, which is set to take place between September 9 and 16 in Düsseldorf, Germany. Harry and Meghan will be in attendance.

    Harry — who first launched the Games in 2014 — and Meghan’s organization, Archewell, teamed up with the Invictus Games Foundation for the release.

    One week after taking the witness stand in the UK for his lawsuit against a tabloid, Prince Harry is back in the United States giving back to the veteran community. He showed up in San Diego for the final day of the Warrior Games, a series of competitions for wounded service members, where he watched a sitting volleyball game, chatted with spectators, and posed with members of the winning team from the Special Operations Command. Harry also delivered remarks at the closing ceremony, taking to the podium after a helicopter flypast from Naval Base Coronado.

    According to a tweet from the United States Army Recovery Care Program, Harry sat next to Master Sergeant Michael Haley and his family during the game. Last week, Haley competed in an archery event for Team Army, where he won a silver medal. 

    The Warrior Games see teams of wounded service members from across the US military compete against one another, and Harry is a frequent guest at its events. In 2013, Harry traveled to Colorado to watch the games, which inspired him to start the Invictus Games, which allows wounded service members from around the world to compete in various sports. 

    The next edition of the Invictus Games will take place in Düsseldorf in September. During the opening ceremony for last year’s games in the Hague, Harry gave a speech where he explained their purpose and significance. “Your stories inspire people to believe in themselves,” he said. “Your actions prove the impossible is in fact possible. And your continued service encourages others to give back and serve in their own way. With whatever you carry, with whatever may weigh you down, it is here at the Invictus Games that you realize it wasn’t a weight after all—it was the springboard that propelled you to the next level.”
