A driver fleeing the scene of a crash slammed into a USPS truck, killing a mail worker, Texas authorities say.

Deputies arrested 48-year-old Jose Humberto Romero on a charge of intoxication manslaughter after the fatal collision on Houston’s northwest side, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in an Oct. 18 news release.

The 58-year-old mailman has been identified as Steven Marks, the sheriff’s office said.

According to investigators, Romero had gotten into a minor crash moments before he’s accused of hitting Marks’ mail truck, KENS reported.

“As he was fleeing, he was going at a high rate of speed. He lost control, and he struck the rear of the postal truck , who was delivering mail in the residences here on the southbound side of Antoine Drive,” officials told the outlet.

Marks was taken to a hospital where he died due to his injuries, deputies said, KTRK reported.

“The Postal Service is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life yesterday in a two-vehicle accident in Houston, TX, involving our Postal family member with 28 years of service,” USPS said in a statement, the outlet reported. “Our thoughts are with their family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. We will be offering counseling services to our employees at the Cornerstone Post Office as the investigation into the incident continues.”

Romero was also arrested in 2023 on a DWI charge, the sheriff’s office said.

His bond is set at $250,000, records show.

No attorney information was listed for him as of Oct. 19.
