    If you’re driving on Interstate 270 northbound in Montgomery and Frederick counties, Maryland, you’re going to see new metered ramps.

    Entering I-270 now from exits like the one on Falls Road, drivers are either going to see a flashing yellow traffic light, or a red light that will turn green for a moment, allowing one car to get on the interstate at a time. It will all depend on the traffic on I-270.

    Maryland’s Department of Transportation said the ramps will reduce congestion and speed up commutes coming back from the city along the roughly 34-mile stretch.

    Sixteen entrance ramps will have them, and they will operate between 4 a.m. and 11 p.m. daily.

    MDOT claimed the metered ramps will save some drivers heading northbound up to 30 minutes on their morning commute.

    “This project is just one example of how technology and innovative solutions can reduce congestion and make a safer, more reliable commute for tens of thousands of Marylanders every day,” said State Highway Administrator Will Pines in a statement.

    Similar metering has already happened on the southbound entrances of I-270 for about five years.

    Every day between 80,000 to 260,000 cars hop on the busy stretch of highway, according to MDOT.

    A woman pregnant with twins gave birth to one of her babies Friday on the side of Interstate 270, with the help of a Montgomery Co. firefighter.

    A Montgomery County firefighter helped a local woman pregnant with twins deliver a baby girl Friday morning while parked on the side of I-270 in Rockville after she and her husband were unable to get to the hospital in time, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) spokesperson David Pazos told Bethesda Today.

    Around 7 a.m., the county’s emergency communication center received a call from the woman’s husband reporting that his wife was giving birth in their car, Pazos said. The husband and wife had pulled over on the southbound shoulder of I-270 near the Falls Road exit ramp.

    Pazos said several firetrucks and an ambulance responded and one firefighter assisted the mother with the birth of a healthy baby girl.

    With outdoor temperatures hovering around 20 degrees, first responders immediately placed the newborn and mother in an ambulance to warm up and receive additional care before heading to the hospital, Pazos said.

    A “wild and dangerous police pursuit” that started in Frederick County, Maryland, came to a stop on Interstate 270 in Montgomery County.

    It happened Friday during the afternoon rush. WTOP’s Traffic Center fielded several calls from panicked listeners who said they saw someone driving southbound on I-270 “lane-splitting the northbound lanes and going head-first into oncoming traffic,” WTOP Traffic reporter Dave Dildine said.

    The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office said in a post on Facebook that its deputies were involved in the pursuit as it continued into Montgomery County. The driver of the vehicle, a man, was detained and the sheriff’s office said there is “no further threat to the community.”

    The pursuit came to a stop when the driver crashed near the Comus Road overpass in Clarksburg, Dildine said.

    WTOP’s news partner 7News reports that the man then jumped out of the car while holding a child, using them as a hostage.

    All lanes of I-270 were shutdown for more than an hour during the standoff. Hundreds of drivers idled in place between Route 121 and Route 109 as police worked to bring the situation under control.

    The Maryland State Highway Administration diverted northbound traffic at Father Hurley Boulevard while southbound drivers were sent onto Route 109 into Hyattstown. Long backups formed on nearby Route 355 and Route 27.

    All lanes of I-270 reopened shortly before 7 p.m.

    Tractor-trailer fire in Frederick Co. causes massive I-270 southbound delays – WTOP News

    A massive tractor-trailer fire has been extinguished Wednesday morning on Interstate 270 in Frederick County, Maryland, but delays remain as the roadway is still closed for cleanup.

    Tractor-trailer fire shuts down all lanes of I-270 South in Frederick County on Wednesday morning

    A massive tractor-trailer fire caused traffic delays for hours Wednesday morning on Interstate 270 in Frederick County, Maryland.

    Traffic is still jammed in the area with the southbound lanes closed for cleanup from the fire.

    Before 6 a.m., a driver pulled up beside the tractor-trailer and motioned that the vehicle was on fire near mile marker 25 on southbound I-270, according to Maryland State Police.

    “When the driver pulled over, the tractor-trailer became fully engulfed in flames,” police told WTOP.

    Listeners who called the WTOP Traffic Center described the tractor-trailer as completely “ablaze”

    Frederick County fire and rescue crews arrived on the scene at approximately 5:57 a.m. to put out the fire and said the driver was out of the vehicle.

    Most of the fire had been knocked out by 7:22 a.m., with some hotspots remaining, according to the fire department. After the bulk of the flames were knocked down, crews moved the cargo inside of the truck out onto the roadway to prevent it from reigniting, a fire spokeswoman told WTOP.

    Fire crews cleared the scene at 12:15 p.m. but the truck’s contents are still being moved out of the roadway, the spokeswoman told WTOP. Investigators don’t believe anything hazardous was on the truck.

    As of 1 p.m., I-270 southbound remains closed. First responders are diverting traffic between Maryland Route 80 to Urbana on Exit 26 and Maryland Route 109 towards Hyattstown on Exit 22.

    The fire department is asking drivers to take Route 355 as an alternate route. There’s no word on when the roadway will reopen.

    No one was reported injured.
