    Design Association’s Top 2023 Trends Feature Wellness Design

    The American Society of Interior Designers released its 2023 Trend Outlook and it’s clear that wellness design is not fading from the industry, even as most of us have fully emerged from our Covid home cocoons.

    Designers’ focus on wellness is also tying into client concerns about the planet’s well-being – which has an impact on resilience and comfort – and particular concerns about mental health.

    “Designers are responding to changing needs in their communities by creating new spaces or adapting existing ones to make a positive impact on places where people live, work, play, heal, or learn,” stated said Khoi Vo in the report’s press announcement. A quick round of emailed replies from designers and architects across the country shared their own professional experiences with these top-line trends.

    1. Mental Health Needs

    “Modifications can make interior environments more suitable and supportive for persons with mental health issues and can help aid in reducing environmental factors that can contribute to feelings of stress and unease,” wrote the association in its report.

    “Physical surroundings have a profound effect on one’s mental health,” declared Anna Popov, a Seattle-based interior designer. “It can look amazing, be glamorous, and cost a fortune, but how does it make you feel?” She asked. Popov cited the importance of maximizing natural light in the sometimes gloomy Pacific Northwest. “It is common practice in our firm to evaluate every design early on against very simple criteria: Does this solution allow us to maximize the amount of natural light in the space? If the answer is no, we pretty much automatically drop the idea because there is a better solution out there,” she added.

    Popov’s designs incorporate strategic window styles and placement, extensive skylights and accordion door styles, she explained. “This approach not only provides us with brighter and ‘happier’ interiors but also deepens our relationship with the outdoors. Which is another essential element for a person’s mental health.”

    2. Health and wellness remain top priorities in the built environment

    ASID’s report identified a growing trend towards holistic healthy living, and interior design that addresses both the mind and body. New design choices can range from the choice of colors, lighting and daylighting, and the use of plants and natural materials to adding spa-like bathrooms and retreat spaces for exercise and meditation,” the announcement noted.

    Drew Lang, principal of Lang Architecture in New York agreed. “Using natural materials creates a tangible relationship between people and nature through design, which in turn enhances wellbeing. Materials like wood foster this physical connectivity, and we find our clients respond to the familiar warmth and comfort it brings to a home.” This concept ties into biophilia, which is the use of nature in the built environment, and is very much a feature of wellness design.

    Jessica Shaw, interior design director at The Turett Collaborative, also in New York, is glad to see wellness becoming a major talking point in interiors, she said. “It is also nice to see the conversation around the effects of color on mood. I tend to avoid any colors or color combinations that produce anxiety. Steering away from clashing colors and looking for cooler colors that complement each other are more likely to create a calmer, and more relaxing frequency in the space. While it can sound minor, these considerations can have major effects on the health and wellness properties of interiors,” she pointed out.

    3. Consumers want to protect the planet and are making sustainable choices

    Consumers, including home buyers, are placing increasing emphasis on sustainability as a value guiding their purchasing choices, with increasing numbers of consumers saying they are willing to pay a purchase premium for sustainability,’ according to the report.

    “Clients are willing to pay for well designed, sustainable homes— we saw this firsthand in our Hudson Woods development, an eco-friendly community in New York’s Catskills, commented Lang. “The Hudson Woods’ sustainability story compelled buyers to purchase homes, and we’ve begun working on similar models across the country thanks to this reaction.”

    Shaw is seeing this in her practice too, she commented. “Clients have become more proactive in inquiring about materials’ ethical sourcing, manufacturing process, and negative traits such as off-gassing. While these were always considerations on the design side, seeing clients become more engaged in the conversation is evidence of an increased interest in being responsible consumers.”

    Sustainability and wellness design overlap in choices like induction over gas cooktops, LED lighting, and materials that don’t release toxins in the home to preserve indoor air quality.

    4. Designing in and for the metaverse is gaining momentum as a design specialty

    Forward-thinking companies are already exploring how they might use the metaverse to engage with customers. Recent articles from design publications have urged interior designers to “get on board,” even going so far as to creating Metaverse design awards for interior and architectural firms to showcase their work done within the digital space,” ASID commented on this trend report conclusion.

    How does this relate to wellness design? For the millions of Americans who work from home, the metaverse provides an opportunity for more dynamic interaction with others around the firm and around the world. It also calls for a workspace that feels more personal and creative, enhancing the user’s enjoyment of being there both off-camera and on.

    Popov is seeing the trend in her practice, she shared. “The majority of our clients work at a computer, have virtual meetings, and want to have a lovely background which reflects their personality, interests, and hobbies. We are always taking into consideration the digital world we live in.”

    This means providing optimal lighting and factoring in the wall that will be seen on camera. “Having a background that reflects your personality and interests can be a great opportunity for connection and socialization especially in our remote work environments,” the designer noted.

    Conclusions

    The 25,000 member association’s trend report also noted an increase in office spaces being designed for neurodivergent users to be more inclusive and accessible. This trend is also extending to homes, as more Americans are diagnosed as being on the spectrum and people are rethinking their spaces to be more inclusive for neurodivergent members of their households.

    The report also noted more older adults ‘un-retiring’ and seeking hybrid work arrangements. “Workplaces are adapting to support a multigenerational workforce,” it noted. The same is true for many households as well.

    In 2019, I bought a three-bedroom, 1,400-square-feet house in Atlanta, Georgia for $196,000. I figured I could earn extra income by renting out the spare rooms on Airbnb, especially since I traveled a lot for work and was rarely home.

    Unfortunately, the bookings dried up in 2020. No one wanted to share a house with a stranger in the early days of the pandemic. My work travels also stopped, so I was living alone in a house that felt too big.

    But that May, as I stared out the kitchen window into my huge backyard, something clicked: I could use that space to build a tiny home to live in, and fully rent out the main house.

    How I built my luxury tiny home

    Before getting started, I had to submit building, electrical and plumbing permits to the city planning office.

    Then I purchased a shed from Liberty Storage Solutions and hired a local contracting team to pour a concrete slab foundation. They got to work in October 2020.

    Overall, it cost me around $35,000 to build the home, which includes the prefabricated shed structure, labor and material costs.

    Instead of taking out a bank loan, I cashed out $8,500 in stocks and put about $20,000 on my credit cards to pay for everything. I was able to pay off this debt last year.

    While the house was being built, I rented out my primary home and rented a room from my neighbor for $300 a month.

    Precious’ tiny home sits in the back corner of her 7,280 sq. ft. backyard.

    After we finished building the 296-square-foot tiny home in March 2021, I immediately rented it out on Airbnb for a few months to recoup costs.

    By charging between $89 and $129 per night and $1,300 for monthly leases, I was able to bring in almost $32,000 in gross rental income. And this January, I moved into the tiny home to save on living expenses.

    Here are the monthly associated costs for both homes:

    • Mortgage and property taxes: $1,200
    • Electricity: $190
    • Water: $110
    • Internet: $80

    Total: $1,580

    All of this is covered by the $2,725 I make from renting out the main house, which means I’m able to live in my tiny home for free.

    A look inside my loft-style backyard home

    To give the place a light and airy feel, I painted the walls a coastal blue shade and added some rustic touches like a wooden ladder leading to the loft’s queen-sized mattress.

    Nestled under the sleeping loft is a small desk, which she uses to check emails and catch up on work.

    In addition to the daybed that doubles as a couch on the main floor, there’s a full bathroom, kitchen and breakfast nook.

    My favorite area is the kitchen. Most people are surprised to see that it has a full-sized fridge and extra large sink.

    The eight separate windows, wall mirrors and glass shower door all make the space feel bigger. I sometimes forget I’m living in a shed.

    The “tiny house” lifestyle

    I’ve had to downsize my wardrobe and shoe collection. But rather than getting rid of clothes I still want to keep, I store some at a friend’s house. Every few weeks, we do a wardrobe swap.

    Precious’ dog Sachia also lives in the tiny home with her. She plans to entertain friends in the backyard when the weather gets warmer.

    In 2021, after realizing effects of vacation rentals on the real estate market in Atlanta, I stopped listing my properties for short-term rental on sites like Airbnb. Renting out more and more space for vacations means less space for folks who need long-term homes.

    I’ve since decreased my portfolio and am renting to local students and low-income workers. My plan is to add an attached guest suite to the main home and provide even more stable housing.

    Precious’ least favorite part of her home is the loft area, which doesn’t have much clearance for anything but sleeping.

    The pandemic turned us into a nation of painters. Confined within our four walls, we could not resist the temptation to contemplate a color change. We wanted drama, but we also wanted a peaceful environment; we wanted a graphic punch of color while we yearned for a soothing backdrop; mostly, we just wanted a change. A new coat of paint was the easiest, fastest way to bring about change, and we wholeheartedly embraced dropcloths, painter’s tape, sandpaper and spackle. We learned about primer and the importance of proper preparation.

    Two New York City-based designers suggest another effective design tool in the paint box: the application of high-gloss finishes.

    “This is not a trend, so much as a tool that can be used to great effect,” says Anna Baraness. Together with her partner, Kristin Tarsi, she heads up Studio AK, a full-service interior design firm located in Manhattan’s Soho. Specializing in renovating and furnishing high-end residential projects, the two bring together over twenty-five years of international design experience. Current projects include apartments in Manhattan and homes in Washington D.C., Silo Ridge, New York, Charlottesville, Virginia and Palm Beach, Florida.

    “A high-gloss finish reflects light in rich and interesting ways,” Kristin Tarsi says. “It can be used to contrast with a matte finish nearby, or it can be used to draw attention to a particular element of a room.”

    “It is also very effective on ceilings,” her partner adds. “It brings and extra layer of reflectivity.”

    The two say that this is not a good treatment for areas that get a lot of wear and tear, such as kitchen cabinets.

    “Also, it doesn’t work well on old walls with a lot of imperfections,” Baraness says. “The gloss shows every bump and dent.”

    She and Tarsi point out that this is one painting chore where the importance of preparation cannot be overstated.

    “Although most of us can paint a wall and do a fairly good job,” Tarsi says, “This is really a job for a professional. The prep work has to be meticulous, or every flaw will show. The shiny finish is either sprayed on, or applied with a very, very fine brush. This is not the time to use a roller and this is not the time for a quick DIY project.”

    Both Anna Baraness and Kristin Tarsi spent years working at large design firms before founding Studio AK. Anna, who is Canadian, holds a sociology and art history degree from Guelph University and a bachelor of interior design degree from Ryerson University in Toronto. Kristin holds a bachelor’s degree in business from Tulane University and an AAS degree in interior design from Parsons School of Design.

    They recommend high-gloss finishes for ceilings, where its additional reflectivity can bring needed light into a room.

    “On a ceiling, it’s not about color, but rather about bouncing around more light,” Baraness says. “We have used it to accentuate the woodwork of a fireplace surround and, in a den in Scarsdale, New York, we treated walls composed of ho-hum knotty pine paneling to a glossy coat of paint in a rich green color. It transformed that room.”

    “Think about different layers and levels,” Tarsi adds. “If the high-gloss finish is an accent, then the other spaces should also be rich finishes. High gloss is not the whole story; it’s part of the story.”

    The designers agree that, in this special application, it pays to seek out high-quality paint.

    “A very glossy finish is not what most paint companies concentrate on; they are mostly about easy-wearing, family-friendly paints,” says Baraness. She and her partner recommend Farrow & Ball paints or Fine Paints of Europe.

    So, as we contemplate the walls surrounding us, we may well consider how the introduction of some shine might brighten our spaces.

    Chicagoland luxury interior design firm and retailer Linly Designs has purchased California-based custom furniture brand Marge Carson.

    After 75 years of operation as a resource for high-end residential upholstery, bedroom, and occasional furniture sold through retailers, design center showrooms, and interior designers, Marge Carson’s former CEO Jim LaBarge announced earlier this month that he would be ceasing operations to focus on his health. Linly Designs, with a reputation for excellence, growth, and high-end design services, purchased the brand this week.

    “Out of many interested and highly-qualified parties, I have chosen Janet as my successor to carry on the spirit, quality, and design excellence of Marge Carson,” said LaBarge. “She is someone in the industry with brilliance, a reputation for achievement, and a mindset for success,” LaBarge said of Janet Linly, President & CEO of Linly Designs.

    The Marge Carson furniture brand is known not only within the United States, but globally for their uncompromised quality, generously-proportioned silhouettes, and some of the finest textiles in the industry.     Alphagreen Group has a growing portfolio of brands within the wellness niche and is looking to increase their acquisition pipeline as other aggregators have decreased their acquisitions. 96North is a US-grown brand that recently expanded into the UK. They have been selling on the Amazon platform since 2020 and rank in the top 1% of jar candles.

    96North is currently on track to achieve 260% growth in the 12 months after acquisition. With an increase in stock and marketing spend, which Alphagreen were keen to provide, the brand can successfully scale on Amazon and within other channels.     The Home Design Institute (HDI) Paris, a leading educational firm providing professional training in interior and landscape design, announced today the results of a survey of nearly 250 participants on their feelings and perceptions after moving from a smaller home to a larger one.

    The data was comprised of students that took a free interior design course at HDI and that indicated they had moved to a larger primary residence in the last two years. Participants were asked a number of questions concerning their relocation.  An overwhelming majority, 68%, indicated that they felt happier after living in their larger home for six months, citing a variety of reasons including increased comfort (79%), more space for individual family members to utilize (77%) and improved relationships between family members (44%).  Less than one-third of all respondents were less happy after living in a larger home for six months; of those respondents, the most cited reason was having to pay larger bills (73%).  The full responses were:

    After 6 months, 32% of respondents felt less happy after moving to a larger home citing:

    – Larger bills (73%)

    – More homework (52%)

    – Increased distance between family members (37%)

    – Decreased sense of security at home (23%)

    – Higher repair and maintenance costs (22%)

    – Difficulties with managing a larger property (18%)

    After 6 months, 68% of respondents felt happier after moving to a larger home citing:

    – Greater comfort at home (79%)

    – Availability of individual spaces for each family member (77%)

    – Home has become cleaner (54%)

    – Improved relationships between family members (44%)

    – Opportunity to create a calmer, individual workplace (38%)

    “It was really fascinating to see the strong feelings of the respondents in this survey,” commented Ilian Petrov, Founder of the Home Design Institute Paris. “We were not expecting so many respondents to have the same answers, but it turned out that many of the participants felt the same way.” 

    Data indicates that worldwide, people are living with more space per person, and it is a reasonable conclusion to think the pandemic may have exacerbated this trend with the desire for larger spaces as individuals and families spent more time at home. Another result of this prolonged home time was skyrocketing demand for interior designers and home improvement contractors. Petrov said that HDI’s free Interior Design Fundamentals course has become more popular than ever. The class is an introductory-level course designed for people who are looking to start as independent interior designers.

    Designer and entrepreneur April Cornell received a lifetime achievement honor for her contribution to the gift and home industry

    April Cornell, fashion and home designer of colorful and artistic apparel and home furnishings, was honored with an ICON Honors Lifetime Achievement award. ICON Honors are awarded to individuals and companies of distinction who have impacted the gift and home industry. Icon Honors is the signature event of The Atlanta International Gift & Home Furnishings Market®. The gift and home industry’s most celebrated recognition was presented by Arianna Huffington, the keynote speaker at the event.

    April Cornell is known for her signature prints and whimsical, joyful and romantic style and has been a designer presence in the retail world since the 1970s. Boasting hundreds of vintage-inspired prints designed from her own watercolors and works of art, April Cornell was recognized for her contribution as a creative entrepreneur with a knack for niche markets and a special attention to the retail experience. She has always had a global outlook with deep roots in India, where she owns her own factory, and retail and wholesale markets in both USA and Canada.

    April, like a poet, sensitively capture’s nature’s many moods and splendid colors with strokes of a paintbrush. April’s travels throughout the world, particularly India where she does charitable work, has also given her craft unique flavors. Throughout the years, I have admired her timeless ever-evolving, unformulaic brand signature, which is why I licensed her work years ago at Silvestri and continue to collaborate with her now.

    The intuitive UX is the first of its kind to solve the inflexible step-by-step process. Instead, it allows users to move forwards as well as backwards while making their creative decisions, continuously showing a preview and without losing their previous selections from the wide range of choices including frame size, style, color, layout, mat color, and photo paper.

    The app also connects with various storage locations including Camera Roll, Dropbox, Flickr, Google Drive, Facebook, and Instagram. Users can upload images and preview them in their chosen frame, and save any shortlisted images into a Framafoto Album for quick access when deciding between their favorites. Additional features include edit functions such as image cropping, repositioning or replacement, and frame saving – allowing users to easily return and complete, or re-order, projects later.

    Framafoto wants to help consumers hang more happiness in their homes; therefore the app was designed with today’s busy, creative consumers and artists in mind, so they can finally frame those favorite moments or creations they have hidden away on phones, feeds, and clouds.
