  • DOJ opens investigation into SeaWorld Orlando, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay over rollator walker ban

    [ad_1]

The U.S. Department of Justice announced Tuesday that it is opening an investigation to figure out whether SeaWorld Orlando’s recent policy change to ban rollator walkers with seats violated the Americans with Disabilities Act.

It’s a story that FOX 35 Orlando exclusively covered in early November.

The DOJ and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida said in a letter to the CEO of United Parks & Resorts Inc., which oversees SeaWorld Orlando, Aquatica, Discovery Cove, and Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, that it received several complaints from the public about the change at 3 of its Florida theme parks – leading to the investigation. You can read the letter below.

U.S. Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe said in the letter that his agency has not reached any conclusions about the policy change or whether there is indeed an ADA violation. He said the agency would like to “urgently” meet with representatives about the recent policy change.

“Complaints filed with the Department allege that UPR has prohibited a certain type of manually-powered mobility aid-rollator walkers with seats-in some of its parks, including SeaWorld Orlando, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, and Aquatica Orlando. Further, complaints allege that UPR parks offer guests with disabilities who use rollator walkers for mobility the option to rent alternative mobility aids for a surcharge, in potential violation of 28 C.F.R. § 36.301 (c).”

“Accordingly, the Department has authorized an investigation to determine whether UPR is engaged in discrimination as set forth above. We have not reached any conclusions about UPR’s compliance with the ADA and the subject matter of this investigation. We will consider all relevant information, and we welcome your assistance in sharing and identifying relevant information.”

FOX 35 has reached out to United Parks & Resorts, SeaWorld Orlando, and Busch Gardens Tampa Bay for comment on the investigation. We did not immediately hear back.

    What they’re saying:

“The ADA protects every American from disability-based discrimination in places of public accommodation, including theme parks,” said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon for the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division in a statement. “We are committed to upholding our federal civil rights laws so that no guest is denied access or charged more because of a disability.”

“Every year, millions of people from around the world travel to Florida to visit our theme parks,” said U.S. Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe for the Middle District of Florida in a statement. “No one should ever be denied equal access to public accommodations based on disability. Our office remains steadfast in our commitment to ensuring that all individuals with disabilities are guaranteed their rights under the ADA.”

    The backstory:

In early November, SeaWorld Orlando quietly made a change to the type of walkers allowed inside its theme park. The change was noted on its website.

Both rollator and/or wheeled walkers with seats are no longer allowed inside SeaWorld Orlando. Walkers without seats are still allowed inside the theme park.

A spokesperson for SeaWorld Orlando confirmed to FOX 35 at the time that the safety measure was recently updated and added to its web page. However, it’s not known how proactively the measure was distributed nor when it was implemented.

“We are committed to providing a safe, accessible, and inclusive experience for our guests and Ambassadors. To support this, we have recently updated our guidance regarding rollator and wheeled walkers with seats. These devices can pose a safety concern if not used in accordance with manufacturer requirements, which strictly prohibit using them as a wheelchair,” SeaWorld Orlando said in a statement.

What does the new policy say?

“For the safety of our guests and employees, rollator walkers with seats on them are not permitted at SeaWorld Orlando. Alternative personal transportation options, including standard wheelchairs and Electric Convenience Vehicles (ECVs), are available. Walkers without a seat are permitted,” reads the policy on SeaWorld’s website.

FOX 35 did a brief review of the owners manuals for some popular rollator products. The manual does state that rollator are intended to be used as a mobility aid, but are not intended to be used to push people around.

“Do not have anyone push you while you are seated on the Rollator. This is a walking aid only and is not to be used as a transportation device,” read one owner’s manual posted online.

Nancy Schwartz said SeaWorld Orlando is her “favorite place at Christmas” and that she visits the theme park three days a week with her husband. They live in Kissimmee.

She said last Friday night she was allowed in with her rollator wheelchair. However, on Saturday, security stopped her and refused to let her in, citing the new policy – a change that to her was an abrupt surprise.

“It’s very disappointing. I’m very disappointed in SeaWorld,” she told FOX 35’s Hannah McKenzie.

She said she’s been at SeaWorld with her seated walker dozens of times.

What do guests need to know?

Guests can bring their own wheelchairs and electric convenience vehicles, or they can rent one from SeaWorld. Walkers without seats are still allowed inside.

    How much do rentals cost?

Rentals can be made online in advance or near Guest Services inside the theme park. Click here for details.

    Wheelchair rentals start at $40

    Strollers start at $40

Four-wheel electric scooters start at $110.

Prices vary by day, demand, and availability.

    What you can do:

The DOJ said anyone impacted by the recent change at SeaWorld Orlando or United Parks & Resorts Inc.’s other parks can file a complaint online with the Civil Rights Division, here. Or, people can call 1-800-514-0301 or 1-833-610-1264 (TTY).

  • Celeste Rivas case: Singer D4vd viewed as a suspect in teen’s death

    [ad_1]

Singer D4vd, whose real name is David Anthony Burke, is being viewed as a suspect in the death of 15-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez, law enforcement sources told TMZ

FOX 11 reached out to the Los Angeles Police Department for independent confirmation, but the department said they have nothing to confirm at this moment.

According to TMZ’ sources, there is no paperwork classifying D4vd as a suspect, but one of their sources told TMZ, “Investigators are looking at D4vd as a suspect.”

TMZ also said that on Monday, LAPD told them that they are ‘not close to making an arrest’.

Teen found dead in Tesla trunk

    The backstory:

The dismembered remains of Rivas were discovered on Sept. 8, a day after her birthday, inside D4vd’s Tesla after employees at Hollywood Tow reported smelling a strong odor.

When police arrived, they discovered the body wrapped in a bag inside the Tesla’s trunk.

PREVIOUS COVERAGE: D4vd world tour shows in US, Europe canceled amid investigation into dead body found in his Tesla

According to the LAPD, the Tesla was impounded and towed to the yard — an “official police garage” — by the city Department of Transportation because it was “parked on a public street for more than 72 hours.”

Neighbors said the Tesla had been moved several times over the past three months before it was found on Bluebird Avenue, where it was ultimately located.

According to the LAPD, the Tesla was ticketed just 11 days before Rivas Hernandez was found.

The county medical examiner has not yet released a cause of death.

The connection between Celeste and D4vd

    Dig deeper:

Rivas was 13-years-old when she was reported missing on April 5, 2024 in Lake Elsinore.

Rivas Hernandez had been reported missing at least three times in 2024, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Her mother reportedly claims that before the teen went missing in April 2024, she was dating someone named David, but she had never met him.

    PREVIOUS COVERAGE:

Friends of D4vd told TMZ the two were “romantically involved” but that they believed she was a 19-year-old student at USC. They said they didn’t think she was a minor because she attended multiple age-restricted events.

Law enforcement sources previously confirmed to TMZ that Rivas Hernandez had multiple fake IDs which could have given the teen access into such events.

    Defense attorney hired

In early October, D4vd hired renowned criminal defense lawyer Blair Berk amid the intensifying investigation into Rivas’ death, LA Magazine reported.

While Berk has limited experience with murder cases, she has handled them before. Her past clients, primarily in the entertainment industry, include Harvey Weinstein, Lindsay Lohan, Kanye West, Mel Gibson, Britney Spears, and Reese Witherspoon.

Most recently she represented Monica Sementilli, who in June was sentenced to life in prison for the 2017 murder of her husband, celebrity hairstylist Fabio Sementilli.

    How events unfolded

    Timeline:

    • April 2024: Rivas Hernandez is reported missing by her family in Lake Elsinore. She is found by police in Hollywood and returned home.
    • May 2024: Rivas Hernandez is reported missing again.
    • Aug. 27, 2025: The position of the tires on a Tesla registered to singer D4vd, legal name David Anthony Burke, is marked by authorities.
    • Sept. 3, 2025: Parking citation issued.
    • Sept. 5, 2025: Tesla impounded.
    • Sept. 8, 2025: Rivas Hernandez’s remains were found in the trunk of the Tesla a day after her 15th birthday.
    • Sept. 17, 2025: Detectives with the LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division served a search warrant on D4vd’s $20,000 a month rental home located not far from where the Tesla was parked. Several bags of evidence were seized from the home.
    • Sept. 19, 2025: D4vd cancels his “Withered” world tour.
    • Sept. 24, 2025: Rivas Hernandez’s body is released back to her family. The same day, movers are seen hauling boxes and other items from the home into a moving truck. The homeowner confirmed with TMZ that D4vd’s manager, Josh Marshall, informed him they’d be breaking the lease and move out by the end of the week.

  • Police chase ends in Reseda, at least two in custody

    [ad_1]

An hour-long police chase ended in the San Fernando Valley neighborhood of Reseda

SkyFOX picked up the chase around 2:30 p.m. in the Mid-City area.

The vehicle is believed to be stolen.

    Timeline:

SkyFOX was over the vehicle as it drove on surface streets through Koreatown. It appeared the car had some damage to its front bumper.

The driver continued on surface streets, dodging passing cars and ignoring street signs.

They made their way back to Mid-City then Beverly Hills, driving at high speeds and even on the opposite side of the road at times.

The suspect eventually entered the northbound 405 Freeway in the West LA area. They exited the freeway at Burbank Blvd. in Sherman Oaks and continued driving on Sepulveda Blvd.

They drove through Van Nuys and Reseda. But the chase came to an end around 3:26 p.m. when the suspect went up a curb, just inches away from a fence at a home at the intersection of Hesperia Ave. and Vanowen St. in Reseda. Two people immediately exited the car and fled.

One of the suspects ran into an alley and attempted to jump a fence, but police immediately pulled their vehicle next to the suspect, blocking them from leaving. That person was taken into custody. Near the suspect’s vehicle, police apprehended another suspect. Images from SkyFOX also showed a woman being taken into custody; her role in the chase is unknown.

  • Dodgers capture back-to-back World Series championships, first since 2000

    [ad_1]

The Los Angeles Dodgers are once again World Series champions.

The Dodgers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4 in extra innings in Game 7, becoming the first team since 2000 to win consecutive World Series titles. The New York Yankees won three championships in a row from 1998 to 2000.

Saturday’s historic win marks the Boys in Blue’s ninth World Series title, their third since 2020.

VIDEOS: Dodgers, Blue Jays benches clear in World Series Game 7

    EXTRA INNINGS

The 2025 World Series has officially become an all-time classic.

The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Toronto Blue Jays have not only extended this series to a winner-take-all Game 7, but that game needed extra innings to find a winner. The Boys in Blue forced the game to go extras after Miguel Rojas’ ninth-inning solo home run to tie the game at 4-4.

Will Smith blasted a go-ahead solo home run to put the Dodgers ahead 5-4 in the 11th inning.

Things got a little hairy for Dodger fans after Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a leadoff double to begin the bottom of the 11th inning. Los Angeles got the first out after Isaiah Kiner-Falefa bunted Guerrero to third. Dodgers’ Yoshinobu Yamamoto, throwing in Game 7 on zero days of rest after pitching on Friday, walked Addison Barger to put the winning run at first, in addition to Guerrero waiting at third.

Blue Jays’ Alejandro Kirk then grounded into a double play to end the game and give the Dodgers their ninth World Series championship.

Yamamoto was named World Series MVP after delivering wins in Games 2, 6 and 7.

Prior to the Game 7 classic, series was without drama. Game 3 took 18 innings to complete – the longest since 2018 – and Game 7 had a bench-clearing shouting match between players from both teams.

    SERIES AT A GLANCE

    • Game 1: Blue Jays 11, Dodgers 4
    • Game 2: Dodgers 5, Blue Jays 1
    • Game 3: Dodgers 6, Blue Jays 5, Final/18th.
    • Game 4: Blue Jays 6, Dodgers 2
    • Game 5: Blue Jays 6, Dodgers 1
    • Game 6: Dodgers 3, Blue Jays 1
    • Game 7: Dodgers 5, Blue Jays 4. Final/11th.

    HOW BOTH TEAMS GOT HERE

The Dodgers punched their ticket to the Fall Classic after sweeping the Brewers in the NLCS in four games. Prior to that, the Dodgers beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 3 games to 1, in the best-of-5 division series.

Before the NLDS win, Los Angeles pulled off a 2-game minisweep of the Cincinnati Reds in the wild card series. The Dodgers secured a spot in the postseason after winning the NL West division.

The Blue Jays made their first trip to the World Series since 1993 after holding off the Mariners in a winner-take-all Game 7 on Monday, October 20. Prior to that, the Jays beat the New York Yankees in the ALDS in four games.

Toronto secured a first-round bye and homefield advantage in the World Series after finishing the regular season with a 94-68 record.

  • Dodgers outlast Jays in 18 innings in Game 3; Longest World Series game since 2018

    [ad_1]

For both Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays players and fans, Game 3 of the World Series came to a merciful end in the 18th inning.

The Dodgers outlasted the Blue Jays 6-5 in a game that lasted 6 hours and 39 minutes.

Freddie Freeman’s walkoff home run in the bottom of the 18th ended up being the hit that sent Dodger fans home happy. Freeman’s game-winning homer comes a year after he hit the grand slam on one leg to beat the New York Yankees in Game 1 of the 2024 World Series.

The game marked the longest World Series game since 2018. The longest game of all time happened in 2018 when the Dodgers beat the Red Sox in a game that also lasted 18 innings – or 7 hours and 20 minutes – in the 2018 World Series, marking the longest Fall Classic showdown. Monday’s game has exceeded six hours, according to FOX’s broadcast.

Los Angeles drew first blood in the 5 p.m. game after Teoscar Hernández blasted a solo homer in the second inning. In the following inning, Ohtani added to the run column to double the Dodger lead to 2-0.

However, in the top of the fourth, the Blue Jays flipped the script via a three-run home run from Alejandro Kirk. The Dodgers came back and tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the 5th.

In the top of the 7th, the Jays put together a 2-out rally against Dodgers reliever Blake Treinen after Bo Bichette drove in Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to retake the lead at 5-4.

In the following frame, the man known by many as baseball’s unicorn blasted his second home run to tie the game at 5-5.

Since that tying run, neither teams punched in a run before Freeman’s walkoff homer.

Will Klein, the reliever who secured the final spot on the World Series roster after Alex Vesia stepped away from the team, threw four scoreless innings from the bullpen.

The Dodgers ‘pen, which has been under scrutiny all season, allowed only one run in 13 ⅓ innings. Blake Treinen allowed the only run from the team’s bullpen on Monday. The Game 3 starter, Tyler Glasnow, allowed four runs – two earned – in 4 ⅔ innings and struck out five Jays hitters.

With the win, Los Angeles takes a 2-1 series lead in the best-of-7 showdown. The Dodgers will have Shohei Ohtani starting Game 4 on Tuesday while the Jays have Shane Bieber taking the mound for Toronto.

Iconic actress June Lockhart, best known for her roles in “Lassie” and “Lost in Space” has passed away. She was 100.

A family spokesperson said Lockhart died of natural causes at her Santa Monica home with her daughter, June Elizabeth, and granddaughter, Christianna, by her side.

    The backstory:

Lockhart was born in New York on June 25, 1925.

She made her acting debut at just 8 years old at the Metropolitan Opera House. By age 13, she transitioned from the stage to the screen and was cast in MGM’s 1938 version of “A Christmas Carol.”

Her parents, Gene and Kathleen Lockhart, starred in the film.

Gene Lockhart was an Oscar-nominated actor with over 300 film credits. In the 1930s, he became a founding member of the Screen Actors Guild.

She then was cast in “All This and Heaven Too,” acting alongside Bette Davis and Carles Boyer.

Her other films included “Meet Me in St. Louis,” and “Sergeant York.”

In 1947, Lockhart made her Broadway debut in “For Love of Money,” earning her a Tony Award, which was called the Antoinette Perry Award at the time for “Best Newcomer.”

Cast members from ‘Lost In Space’ (L to R): June Lockhart, Guy Williams, Angela Cartwright and Bob May joined other television stars from 1960’s and 1970’s during luncheon gathering at Century Plaza Hotel, April 13, 1983 in Los Angeles, California. (

In addition to acting, Lockhart had several other passions. She also gained recognition as a spokeswoman for NASA.

“Mommy always considered acting as her craft, her vocation, but her true passions were journalism, politics, science and NASA. She cherished playing her role in ‘Lost in Space’ and she was delighted to know that she inspired many future astronauts, as they would remind her on visits to NASA. That meant even more to her than the hundreds of television and movies roles she played,” her daughter said in a statement.

    What’s next:

Lockhart will be laid to rest at a private ceremony.

  • OC student wearing MAGA hat to honor Charlie Kirk suspended after argument at school

    [ad_1]

An Orange County high school student was suspended after wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat to school, an action that led to an argument and his assault.

The incident occurred at Laguna Beach High School on September 11, the day after Charlie Kirk was shot and killed. The student, Zach Hornstein, said he wore the hat to stand in solidarity with Kirk.

Hornstein said at the end of the school day, a girl pulled his hat off and threw it in a trash can in the girls’ restroom. He said she then started using profanity to describe President Donald Trump.

“I made a joke towards them and said, ‘If you don’t like it here, Canada’s open borders, feel free to go,’” Hornstein said.

A teacher told administrators he said something different.

“They’re saying I told a group of girls to go back to where they came from, which I never said that,” Hornstein said. “When they called in the girl that was involved, she literally told them that I never said that.”

Hornstein’s mother, Janet Semenova, feels the school is targeting her son because of his political beliefs, placing blame on him, whom she says was the original victim.

“I think it’s a double standard,” Semenova said. “I think kids who have certain political beliefs are held to a different standard than kids who have other political beliefs.”

She said she is disappointed in how the school is handling the situation.

“I don’t think either of these students should have been suspended, and we said that in our meeting,” Semenova said. “We said, ‘You’re punishing these students and you’re creating an environment of deeper hostility instead of creating an environment of deeper dialogue.’”

The Laguna Beach Unified School District said it cannot comment on student discipline matters but sent FOX 11 a statement saying:

“When disputes arise on campus, schools must evaluate the behavior involved. California law defines the grounds for suspension, and we are reviewing the facts in this situation through that process to ensure it is handled fairly and consistently.”

The family met with the principal Tuesday morning, who is upholding the suspension. The family said it is now considering escalating the issue to the school board.

  • LAPD no longer providing protection for Kamala Harris after backlash: report

    [ad_1]

Former Vice President Kamala Harris will no longer receive special protection from the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The protection was temporary and arranged by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.

LAPD withdraws security detail for Harris

    What they’re saying:

Sources first told FOX 11 last week that Metro officers had been pulled from working crime suppression cases in the San Fernando Valley to provide Harris protection after President Donald Trump ended former President Joe Biden’s extension of her Secret Service coverage. An unmarked LAPD vehicle had been sitting around the clock at Harris’ Brentwood home.

PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Kamala Harris getting 24/7 security from elite LAPD Met. Division after Trump revoked Secret Service

The decision drew heavy criticism from the public, including the board of the Los Angeles Police Protective League.

“Pulling police officers from protecting everyday Angelenos to protect a failed presidential candidate who also happens to be a multi- millionaire with multiple homes and who can easily afford to pay for her own security is nuts,” the board said in a statement. “The mayor should tell Governor Newsom that if he wants to curry favor with Ms. Harris and her donor base then he should open up his own wallet because LA taxpayers should not be footing the bill for this ridiculousness.”

Trump revokes Harris’ Secret Service protection

    The backstory:

Former vice presidents are typically granted Secret Service protection for six months after leaving office.

However, before his term ended, Biden had extended the period for Harris to 18 months, which would have lasted until July 2026. This order was canceled by Trump in late August.

PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Trump revokes Kamala Harris’ Secret Service protection, spokesperson says

Harris was the subject of elevated threat levels while she was vice president, but The Associated Press reports that recent threat intelligence assessments by the Secret Service found no credible threats.

    Harris to begin book tour

    What we don’t know:

It is currently unclear who will be providing security for Harris, who is scheduled to begin a 15-stop book tour for her memoir.

PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Kamala Harris memoir ‘107 Days’: What to know

FOX 11 reached out to her publisher to ask if they are providing security, a step that some taxpayers have suggested she should take.

Others are adamant that she is entitled to security at the taxpayer’s expense.

Officer Norma Eisenman stated that the department was “not speaking on the matter of the protective detail.”

Other instances where protection was withdrawn

    Dig deeper:

Harris is not the only public official whose security has been canceled by Trump.

He has also ended Secret Service protection for former national security adviser John Bolton and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, even though both had been targeted by Iran.

Additionally, in March, he ended the protection for Biden’s children, Hunter and Ashley Biden, which had been granted to them through an extension by their father.

    What’s next:

FOX 11 has reached out to the LAPD for comment but has not yet heard back.

The Source: The information for this report is from multiple sources, including a story from the Los Angeles Times, details from a previous FOX 11 report, City News Service, and threat intelligence assessments from The Associated Press. FOX 11 also reached out to Harris’ publisher and the LAPD for comment and are awaiting a response.

  • Menendez brothers: Lyle Menendez denied parole

    [ad_1]

A California parole board panel on Friday, Aug. 22 voted to reject recommending the release of Lyle Menendez, who, alongside his brother Erik, has spent more than 35 years behind bars for the murders of their parents in 1989.

In a separate parole hearing just a day ago, Erik Menendez was denied release. Commissioners cited his behavior in prison, including the use of a cellphone, as the primary reason for the denial.

    What we know:

In the Friday hearing, Lyle Menendez described the abuse he suffered at the hands of both his parents, which the brothers have maintained for years was the motivation for the murders.

In his closing statement, Lyle Menendez took sole responsibility for the killings.

“I will never be able to make up for the harm and grief I caused everyone in my family,” he said. “I am so sorry to everyone, and will be forever sorry.”

Just like with his brother Erik, commissioners questioned Lyle Menendez’s use of cellphones in prison.

Lyle Menendez said that prison staff were monitoring his communications with his family and selling them to tabloids, so he used cellphones to communicate with his wife and family privately.

However, while Erik Menendez’s panel on Thursday ruled he was still a risk to public safety, the panel on Friday noted that a psychologist found Lyle Menendez at “very low” risk for violence if he were to be released.

    What they’re saying:

“I would never call myself a model incarcerated person,” Lyle Menendez said. “I would say that I’m a good person, that I spent my time helping people. … I’m the guy that officers will come to resolve conflicts.”

Attorney Mark Geragos, who has represented both brothers for years, decried both brothers’ hearings as unfair.

“I’m disappointed,” Geragos told FOX 11. “It’s not the worst day that they’ve had, but at the very least, they should have gotten a fair hearing and they did not… It was atrocious.”

    The other side:

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman, who has been adamantly against the brothers getting parole for months, issued a statement Friday night that read, in part:

“For decades, Lyle Menendez has refused to accept full responsibility for his actions. Along with his brother, he has clung to a fabricated self-defense story, repeatedly shifting narratives and enlisting others to bolster false claims. Although the brothers have participated in rehabilitative programs, rehabilitation is only one factor in determining parole suitability. The rules violations conducted inside prison raises serious concerns about how he might behave if released.”

    What’s next:

Because parole was denied, the panel must provide a reason for the denial and set a new hearing date.

The proposed decision of the hearing panel is not final until it goes through a review process by the Board of Parole Hearings.

If there is a tie, the full board will review the transcript and records to determine the outcome.

SUGGESTED: ’35 years is enough’: Menendez brothers’ family members testify in court

If the parole grant stands, it is then sent to Gov. Gavin Newsom for final approval.

    The backstory:

The brothers are serving life sentences without parole for the murder of their parents, Jose and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez, in 1989.

Erik, then 18, and Lyle, then 21, claimed that the murders came after their father — the chief operating officer of RCA Records — sexually abused them for years and their mother ignored the abuse. They have maintained that they feared for their lives and that José had threatened to kill them if they told anyone about the alleged sexual abuse.

SUGGESTED: Menendez Brothers: Attorneys withdraw motion to remove LA DA Hochman from case

Meanwhile, prosecutors said the two brothers’ motive was greed and cited their lavish spending spree after the murders.

In a 2023 court petition, attorneys for the brothers pointed to two new pieces of evidence they contend corroborate the brothers’ allegations of long-term sexual abuse at the hands of their father — a letter allegedly written by Erik to his cousin Andy Cano in early 1989 or late 1988, eight months before the August 1989 killings, and recent allegations by Roy Rosselló, a former member of the Puerto Rican boy band Menudo, that he too was sexually abused by José as a teenager.

SUGGESTED: Gavin Newsom announces when Menendez brothers’ will have Parole Board hearing

The case has captured the attention of true crime enthusiasts for decades and spawned documentaries, television specials and dramatizations. The Netflix drama “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” and the documentary “The Menendez Brothers,” both released in 2024, have been credited for bringing new attention to the brothers.

    Final review

    What’s next:

Under California law, in the cases of inmates convicted of murder, like the Menendez brothers, parole granted by the board is subject to review by the governor.

Newsom has the authority to affirm, modify, or reverse the parole decision during a review that can last up to 150 days.

His decision is the final step in the parole hearing process.

  • Erik Menendez denied parole for murders of parents; Brother Lyle’s hearing set for Aug. 22

    [ad_1]

A California parole board panel on Thursday, Aug. 21 voted to reject the release of Erik Menendez, who, alongside his brother Lyle, has spent more than 35 years behind bars for the murders of their parents in 1989.

A separate parole hearing for Lyle Menendez is set for Friday, Aug. 22.

    What we know:

Because parole was denied, the panel must provide a reason for the denial and set a new hearing date.

The proposed decision of the hearing panel is not final until it goes through a review process by the Board of Parole Hearings.

If there is a tie, the full board will review the transcript and records to determine the outcome.

SUGGESTED: ’35 years is enough’: Menendez brothers’ family members testify in court

If the parole grant stands, it is then sent to Gov. Gavin Newsom for final approval. The parole denial is for at least three years, but Erik Menendez can ask for an earlier hearing.

    Why was parole denied?

    What they’re saying:

After a hearing that lasted nearly 10 hours Thursday, Parole Commissioner Robert Barton told Erik Menendez, “I believe in redemption or I wouldn’t be doing this job — but based on the legal standards we find that you continue to pose an unreasonable risk to public safety.”

Barton cited Erik Menendez’s “continued willingness to commit crimes and violate prison rules” and noted that the seriousness of the crime is “not a primary reason for this denial.”

“It’s still your behavior in prison,” he said, noting his violations of state prison rules involving cell phones.

‘This is a family tragedy,’ Erik says

Thursday’s hearing included hours of questioning of Erik Menendez about the murders and his relationship with his parents, along with his write-ups for numerous violations while in state prison.

“I just want my family to understand that I am so unimaginably sorry for what I have put them through from August 20, 1989 until this day, and this hearing. I know that they have been here for me and they’re here for me today, but I want them to know that this should be about them. It’s about them and if I ever get the chance at freedom I want the healing to be about them,” Erik Menendez told the panel as he wrapped up his comments to the parole board panel. “Don’t think it’s the healing of me. It’s the healing of the family. This is a family tragedy.”

In his closing statement to the panel, Habib Balian of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office lauded Erik Menendez’s efforts to improve himself, but questioned whether he understands “the full severity and depravity of his conduct” and whether his behavior has been “calculated” as a result of his chance to be released from prison.

“He’s on the road. He’s not there yet. He doesn’t have insight (into his crimes),” Balian said

• Hurricane Erin rapidly intensifies into dangerous Category 4 storm, unleashing 160 mph winds in its path

    [ad_1]

Hurricane Erin, the first major hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, rapidly intensified Friday night, with the storm now reaching Category 4 strength with sustained winds of 160 mph.

Here’s everything we know about the hurricane and what impacts it could bring to Florida.

Hurricane Erin upgraded to Category 4

    What we know:

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) says Hurricane Erin is continuing to rapidly intensify on Saturday morning, with its outer rain bands affecting the northern Leeward Islands.

The storm is now located about 110 miles north of Anguilla and about 205 miles east-northeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

CLICK TO DOWNLOAD THE FOX LOCAL APP

Erin’s winds are now moving at 160 mph, with a minimum central pressure of 915 mb.

Erin is moving toward the west, and this motion is expected to continue this afternoon. A turn toward the west-northwest is expected tonight with a decrease in forward speed, and a turn toward the north is expected to occur early next week. On the forecast track, the center of Erin is expected to move just north of the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico over the weekend.

Additional strengthening of the hurricane is expected this afternoon, and fluctuations in intensity are expected for the rest of the weekend.

    What’s next:

The FOX 35 Storm Team is also monitoring another wave that’s making its way off the coast of Africa, so this will be our next system to watch carefully after Erin, and there’s even one behind that.

What impacts will Hurricane Erin have?

    Dig deeper:

The outer bands of Erin are expected to continue producing areas of heavy rainfall through Sunday across the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

Rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches, with isolated totals of 6 inches, are expected. Locally, considerable flash and urban flooding, along with landslides or mudslides, are possible.

Swells generated by Erin will affect portions of the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, and the Turks and Caicos Islands through the weekend. These swells will spread to the Bahamas, Bermuda and the east coast of the United States early next week.  These rough ocean conditions will likely cause life-threatening surf and rip currents.

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for St. Martin and St. Barthelemy, as well as Sint Maarten.

    Will Hurricane Erin impact Florida?

    Local perspective:

No, Hurricane Erin is not expected to directly impact Florida, as the storm is forecast to turn north and stay well east of the U.S. coastline.

However, the East Coast, including Florida’s Atlantic beaches, will likely see dangerous surf and life-threatening rip currents.

If you are on the coast, be extremely careful in the water due to the high risk of strong rip currents. Monitor local news and weather sources for the latest updates on the storm’s track and any potential changes to the forecast.

What else is happening in the topics?

    Big picture view:

The NHC is also continuing to monitor a system in the northwestern Atlantic for possible development, although its chances remain low.

This broad and weak area of low pressure is located off the coast of North Carolina and is producing disorganized shower activity. Some slight development of this system is possible over the next day or two while it moves little over the warm waters of the Gulf Stream.

By Monday, environmental conditions are expected to become unfavorable for further development.

The system currently has only a 10% chance of development over the next 48 hours and seven days.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, and the peak of the season occurs on Sept. 10.

When firefighters arrived, flames were seen coming from the upstairs bedroom window. A person was also standing on the roof.

Crews were able to reach them and put out the flames. They were treated by PSF firefighters and King County paramedics.

Firefighters say other residents made it out of the burning home after waking up to the sound of smoke alarms.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

After this house fire, PSF is reminding the public to check their smoke alarms every month.

  • Mount Rainier introducing timed entry reservations starting in 2024, sign ups start Feb. 21

Mount Rainier introducing timed entry reservations starting in 2024, sign ups start Feb. 21

    [ad_1]

Timed entry reservations are being introduced at Mount Rainier National Park this spring in an effort to cut down on wait times, congestion and to better preserve the park’s ecosystem.

Guests are able to reserve spots for the Paradise Corridor starting at 7 a.m. on Feb. 21. The next booking blocks are on April 1 and May 1.

You can still enter the park without a timed entry reservation– you just need a park pass or need to pay the entry fee.

    Reservations can be made here.

    HOW IT WORKS

Starting at the end of May, timed entry reservations will be required at the Paradise Corridor and the Sunrise Corridor from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Each corridor will require a separate reservation.

“We have a huge influx of people coming out to Mt. Rainier for the first time,” said Mount Rainier National Park spokesperson, Kevin Bacher. “It’s not so much that we have a problem of too many visitors, it’s that we have too many visitors all at once.”

Bacher explained that the new system is not set in stone. They are trying it out as a pilot program.

“A lot of this is a test to see what works well for us, but we’ve learned a lot from other national parks that have been through this,” said Bacher.

Timed entry reservations are good for a single day, per vehicle, and are required in addition to an entrance fee or park pass.

Reservations at Paradise Corridor are required from May 24 through Sept. 2. Ones at Sunrise start July 3 and run through Sept. 2. You don’t need a timed reservation if you have a service reservation (like staying at park lodging or camping or having a special use wilderness permit).

“So, the idea of this is trying to spread visitation out throughout the day instead of concentrating it in the middle of the day,” explained Bacher. “There’s a lot of productive time after 3 o’clock. The evenings are beautiful at Mt. Rainier National Park and of course, in summertime, the sun doesn’t set until 9 p.m.”

A portion of timed entry reservations will be available 90 days or approximately three months in advance in blocks.

Last spring, a 200+ page draft of a Corridor Draft Management Plan and environmental assessment. One of the proposed plans involved a timed entry reservation system.

WHAT DO FORMER PARK RANGERS THINK OF IT?

Retired Park Ranger Bill Wade offered his two cents on the pivot to reservations. Wade worked at Mount Rainier from 1967 to 1970.

“I think there’s probably going to be a fair amount of disappointment,” said Wade. “When people either from other countries or even, you know, in this country don’t have access to the ways to make reservations or don’t know about it and they arrive there.”

This is a first for Mount Rainier National Park, but not a first for the park service. Similar time-based reservation systems are already in the works at other popular parks.

“The timed entry at Arches– there was a lot of initial negative response from businesses in Moab and the same was true in Rocky Mountain when they did some of that there,” remarked Wade.

According to Wade, those gateway community businesses changed their tune once they experienced the benefits of the new program.

“I think overall it’s been positive,” said Wade. “It does tend to create happier visitors and it doesn’t impact the businesses very much.”

Wade believes the limitations on Mount Rainier visits could impact other national parks in our region like North Cascades and Olympic.

“I think that they will see a little bit of spinoff from limitations in Mount Rainier,” predicted Wade. “I’m sure there are places in Olympic that are starting to feel crowded and it might not be very long before they have to institute some limitations as well.”
