The pandemic forced innovation, but the expected recession may force businesses to do even more

    [ad_1]

The effects of COVID-19 forced companies across many industries to adapt and innovate rapidly. Yet even as the pandemic subsides, there are opportunities for business leaders to continue to apply the lessons they have learned over the last few years.

“Where we are today … retail is a completely different industry [than in 2019],” Kohl’s CEO Michelle Gass said Tuesday during Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit in California. “So many changes—from living through the pandemic, supply chain challenges, the spikes in demand, the pull back in demand, labor.”

But the roller coaster ride likely isn’t over yet, as many experts predict the U.S. will enter a recession next year due to the Federal Reserve’s attempts to tamp down soaring inflation with interest rate hikes.

Gass said Kohl’s is already grappling with recession fears and inflation woes. “We’ve already started feeling it,” she said. “We operate in the more discretionary categories, as opposed to food and gas, and where a lot of budgets are being constrained. And so, as we see this unfolding, we are quickly adapting.”

While Gass acknowledged that her company is holding off on stocking up on inventory, Kohl’s, like many companies today, is using the current circumstances as a “catalyst for change,” she explained. “Oftentimes the harder things are around really structurally changing your cost, structurally changing the way you’re working,” she said.

The retailer is also utilizing customer data more than ever before. Gass noted that Khol’s serves 65 million customers across the country, and the chain has over 30 million subscribers in its loyalty program.

“For someone passionate about data—because it’s a treasure chest—we’re able to tailor and actually do different offers for Julie and Alan, based on what’s going to get them motivated to come and shop,” Gass said. “That, especially in this environment, is extremely powerful to make sure that you’re giving offers to people who need it, versus not.”

But utilizing data comes with challenges as well, said Julie Sweet, chair and CEO of Accenture. “This is the area where I think everyone intuitively understands that data is important. And I’ve not yet found a company that has actually solved the problems of data,” she said.

Sweet’s team is spending time talking to CEOs today around five key forces of change, the first being the “total enterprise reinvention through technology.” Sweet said most businesses have talked about digitization, but reinvention goes a step further and asks companies to systematically overhaul everything that they do. “That has profound implications for how you invest and think about the future,” Sweet said.

Talent is the second key—how companies access talent, create opportunities to unlock talent potential and build pathways to future growth.

Sustainability, broadly, is third. It includes aspects like energy transformation, but it’s also about diversity and what companies are doing within the communities they operate and how that all translates to the bottom line, Sweet said.

The metaverse is the fourth key force of change, an area where Accenture in particular has made a  lot of investment, building its own metaverse for onboarding and employee training. “I will say lots of debate around this, but there isn’t a company or industry that doesn’t need to be thinking about what is it going to be like to go in and out of the virtual and physical world and how will that profoundly change everything, from what we buy, how we buy it, to how we work,” Sweet said.

Finally, the last aspect is the “ongoing technology revolution,” Sweet said. Companies are already investing in this today, but Sweet said leaders need to be able to think ahead and really understand how those trends might affect the business. “It’s also an important part of what CEOs and their leadership teams have to do today.”

  • Bradley Cooper – Please Don’t Make The Hyperion Cantos

Bradley Cooper – Please Don’t Make The Hyperion Cantos

    [ad_1]

You are reading this for the wrong reason. Thus begins Volume Three of the legendary four-part work The Hyperion Cantos, by word wizard Dan Simmons. I quote this line at the outset to emphasize that I have nothing against Bradley Cooper. In fact, I’m a fan who admires him for his guts as an actor and director. I am writing because I believe that a film (or series of films) is the wrong medium for the Cantos and would reduce and constrain our imaginative opportunity. I believe it is a work that

should be left alone as one for the ages to be read (and perhaps listened to, more about which shortly). In a larger sense, my objection invites us to reconsider the question of how medium and story should best fit together.

Allow me to expand. For those of you who don’t know, the Hyperion Cantos is a four-volume saga equal in scope, moral force and sheer entertainment value to The Lord of the Rings. If you haven’t read it, stop and order it right away. It is a virtuoso mashup of hard science fiction, mythology, a profound love story, thoughts about the future of the human/AI relationship, organized religion and more. It is a philosophical tract on what it means to be human, a deep exploration of power and politics, an almost lyrical future military history, a meditation on leadership, art, poetry and more. You get the idea.

I have now read the four volumes from cover to cover twice and keep coming back to their expansive universe with fresh curiosity and unanswered questions. Not all of their meanings can be easily digested in a single reading.

Recently I added listening to reading via the Audible versions of the Cantos. I was mesmerized by the superb artistry of narrator Victor Bevine and his ability to bring complicated characters to life. In reading, one is tempted to rush ahead, to find out what happens next. In contrast, my spoken word experience was more conducive to savoring and reflecting because it slowed down the experience and enabled a different pace of digestion. Most importantly, hearing the voices of the characters allowed room for my imagination while luxuriating in the primal experience of being read to.

Thus I got worried when I heard rumblings of an effort to develop the Cantos into a film(s) at Warner Brothers, driven by no less a member of Hollywood royalty than Bradley Cooper. Having been around the film business and produced a couple of feature films myself, I can certainly appreciate how producers go into heat when they sense a Dune-like epic that can ring the cash registers with multiple sequels, prequels, and spinoffs (not to mention the merch).

But I say don’t do it. Making this film will reduce the impact of this timeless narrative and its characters. Film condenses in a way that can severely constrain the imagination. Let’s first do a bit of simple math, The four books weigh in at 2046 pages. Assuming an average reading pace of a page a minute, we’re talking 34.1 hours of reading. And the Audible versions clock in at a whopping 95 hours! Lots of room for the imagination to take flight. To reflect, digest, learn, weep, rejoice. In contrast, a film occupies somewhere between two and three hours. Draw your own conclusions.

There are times when I want a gifted film-maker to take my imagination along for a ride, regardless of the source material. I’m glad that I read The Lord of the Rings

before seeing the movies, but Peter Jackson’s version stands out as faithful to this beloved work. The current Rings of Power on the other hand travels a lesser road IMHO, sacrificing depth for plot points. And that’s where the risk lies.

Frankly, I don’t want to see the Cantos brought to earth by the latest clever casting decisions involving flavor-of-the-month actors. I don’t want to see Hollywood’s version of massive space battles. I don’t want to see the subtleties of human/AI interaction reduced to digital FX. Film is literally reductive; it’s someone else’s imagination on the screen for you to experience. For example, I read Dune when it first came out. Now I

see Oscar Isaac whenever I reflect on the travails of Duke Leto, and that’s OK for me. When the film craft is good, all is forgiven. When it is mediocre (or the budgets are limited), the imagination suffers.

Leave me alone, Bradley Cooper. This project is too big to have any chance of being faithful to the original. Let me hang out in the Cantos in my own way, warmed by the words of Dan Simmons who ought to someday get a Nobel Prize for narrative imagination. Let me savor characters who have become my friends through Victor Bevine’s narration. Leave me alone with my own imagination to bring the words – written and spoken – to life. I don’t need someone else’s imagination to hitch a ride to this galaxy. Leave me alone. Don’t disempower my imagination. Don’t take away my ability to dream.

  • ESA Awards GHGSat Third Party Mission Status

ESA Awards GHGSat Third Party Mission Status

    [ad_1]

Unique high-resolution methane emissions data added to research portfolio.

    Press Release

    May 24, 2022

GHGSat, the world leader in high-resolution sensing of greenhouse gas emissions from space, today announced that it had officially joined the European Space Agency’s (ESA) prestigious Earthnet Third Party Mission (TPM) programme. As a result, data from the company’s commercial satellites will be provided, free of charge, to researchers working in the fields of Earth sciences and climate change.

Launched in 2018, ESA’s Earthnet TPM programme rigorously evaluates independent Earth Observation (EO) datasets, assessing their quality and validation protocols. If accepted, ESA then flags the information to the wider scientific community. The programme aims to make high-quality data more accessible and interoperable in order to promote the creation of new science and applications.

The new deal expands on an existing arrangement with ESA and the Canadian Space Agency that saw GHGSat provide 5% of the data from its first commercial satellite free for use by researchers. TPM users will be able to access state-of-the-art greenhouse gas measurements, with a resolution down to just 25m on the ground, from sites around the world.

Announcing GHGSat’s Third Party Mission Status, ESA’s Simonetta Cheli, Director of Earth Observation Programmes, said, “We are delighted to announce that our Member States have approved GHGSat’s membership to the Third Party Mission programme. It is fitting that we do this today, at our Living Planet Symposium: an event that sees scientists and researchers from around the world come together to discuss how space can help us monitor – and safeguard – the health of our planet. GHGSat’s unique high-resolution imagery is a valuable addition to our portfolio and will be a great asset to all those studying human-made greenhouse gas emissions.”

Methane is now recognised as a major factor in global warming. Identifying – and rectifying – the source of man-made leaks has become a climate action priority. GHGSat operates the only satellite constellation able to measure industrial emissions down to the level of individual oil or gas wells. It currently has three satellites in orbit, with three more due to launch this week.

Stephane Germain, CEO, GHGSat, said: “We greatly value our relationship with ESA and are thrilled at becoming an official Third Party Mission member. It is a tribute to the hard work of our teams and scientists in Canada and around the world that have helped create – and prove – the high-resolution technology that makes our data unique. From the moment we had our first demonstration satellite in orbit, GHGSat has looked for ways to support climate science research, working with distinguished organisations such as Harvard and SRON. Now, as part of ESA’s TPM family, we’re glad our data will be available to an even wider community.”

  • Retail Robotics Announces Rapid Expansion with New Robotic Delivery Solutions

Retail Robotics Announces Rapid Expansion with New Robotic Delivery Solutions

    [ad_1]

As customers move to online shopping, one thing is clear: Retail Robotics is the next technology company to watch in 2022.

    Press Release

    Apr 5, 2022

Retail Robotics, one of the top-rated companies in innovative tech solutions for retailers and logistic services providers, shares new insights on robotic innovations, which can solve problems of so-called “last-mile” and revolutionize global delivery infrastructure for e-commerce and e-grocery. It addresses big challenges the market is currently facing.

The market is booming and the forecasts show the growth to $7.385 trillion of global e-commerce sales by 2025. While demand for online deals could grow without limits, the current infrastructure cannot handle the increased volumes. Everything indicates that robotic pick-up points will become one of the key answers to the expectations of online retailers and consumers.

“Classic solutions have low capacity and occupy large space. Whereas home delivery causes higher traffic in cities and generates air pollution. With today’s rapid growth of online shopping, many retailers still lack the efficient delivery options in terms of costs, footprint, capacity, and consumer experience,” explained CEO and Founder at Retail Robotics, Łukasz Nowiński. With the multichannel technology from Retail Robotics, retailers can reduce costs and boost their sales, ultimately contributing to the sustainable development of cities. “Today’s consumers have high expectations for more convenient options allowing them to collect their orders 24/7, safe, fast, easy and for free,” Nowiński added.

For e-grocery retailers, the company provides Arctan technology, the most efficient click-and-collect robotic solution that increases profitability and customer experience, and at the same time offers the lowest footprint. In fact, one Arctan (capacity 202 logistic bins and 28 freezer lockers) replaces 14 classic refrigerated lockers. Arctan Drive version for e-grocery curbside pickup has a high capacity of 896 logistic bins or more (capacity of 56 classic lockers), can fit eight standard parking spots and serve seven customers at a time. It can be integrated with Micro Fulfillment Center for remote loading, enabling a very efficient process.

In the parcel delivery market, Retail Robotics enables logistics providers to reduce costs by up to 90% with its other flagship innovation PickupHero, a robotic parcel locker. It fits 90% of local stores and gives a top customer experience without the involvement of a salesperson. The additional advantage for local shops is a 70% pick-up to purchase ratio.

PickupHero allows rapid expansion in agglomerations such as NY, Paris or London  – just by allowing the use of large local store networks like 7-Eleven, without interfering with the city’s architecture. After the successful debut at NRF 2022 Innovation Lab, the company announced plans to implement them on several European markets in 2022.

This kind of transition from home delivery to robotic solutions remains crucial to continued success in the retail landscape ahead. “Retail Robotics carved its path by staying ahead of the competition. I am proud to begin talks with the world’s biggest players to change traditional logistics to robotized parcel lockers, automated machines for e-grocery and click-and-collect pickup points, that will drastically reduce the number of home deliveries, congestion and pollution in cities and increase the efficiency of retail. We all need to be on board to make a significant impact,” announced Łukasz Nowiński.

  • Genmist – a New Tobacco Free Advocate

Genmist – a New Tobacco Free Advocate

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Jun 27, 2021

Since the emerge of vaping products from 10 years ago, the world sees a continuous decline of cigarette consumptions year on year. This is a positive sign that vaping is helping smokers move to alternative ways of taking in nicotine. Since NRT (nicotine replacement therapy) was advocated by WHO in 1978 we start to see it taking effects in mass cloud among smokers.

The huge success of vaping ignites the passion of global tobacco companies in the technology and future of NGP (New Generation Product), Phillip Morris (Parent company of the world famous Marlboro brand cigarette), BAT (Parent company of Camel), Japan Tobacco, Imperial Tobacco and so on, all invest heavily in the development and marketing of the new products. Phillip Morris has moved all its marketing budget from combustible cigarettes to IQOS, its new heat not burn product.

In addition to big tobacco, there are also many new companies globally who are passionate about this revolution in smoking, especially in USA and China, the two biggest markets for vaping. We have seen flourishing development of new vaping products, such as bigger disposable, disposable with lights, pod devices with screen and so on. However, there is a lot less development in other product categories. In the electronic-cigarette industry, there are many new companies are making efforts for the development of the industry. As we all know, quitting tobacco is not a one-step thing, so in order to make our future smokeless and tobacco-free, the world needs to build a user-friendly platform with the latest technology and innovation at this stage. “We are doing which not many new companies do,” said Shelley Wu, the Co-founder of the Genmist brand which has heat not burn and nicotine pouch products. They thrive to create quit-tobacco products.

It is known that Genmist products are all tobacco-free nicotine products, including tobacco free heat sticks used with heat not burn device, and tobacco free natural nicotine pouches. With all the efforts of Vaping industry that the idea of tobacco free is widely welcome by consumers and Genmist is now sold in over 10 countries. Their consumers are not only smokers, there are a lot of snus and chewing tobacco users who use Genmist nicotine pouches to replace their old tobacco products.

It is known that smoking kills 7 millions individuals every year and people are seeing vaping, heat not burn, tobacco free products and even newer products are reshaping the ways people take in nicotine. Smoking is still the most common way to take in nicotine but the fact is that the trend is shifting. The question is that will big tobacco still be the only players in this new game, or companies like Genmist will continue to gain its global popularity to provide the world a better solution? Only time will tell.

The Baseline Collection by Skiin: Clothes That Connect to Care

Skiin was created to address the challenge of finding a better way to connect aging parents to their families who want to care for them. Though many wearable devices are able to track biometrics, adoption of these technologies can be a challenge for elderly users. Moreover, these solutions often require elderly users to actively interact with their devices and manually log readings. By knitting the ability to sense into everyday clothing, Skiin continually tracks a loved one’s well-being and physical status without requiring them to constantly interact with technology. This gives caregivers and their loved ones peace of mind wherever they are and whenever they want.

The Baseline Collection consists of a line of garments knitted using premium materials such as bamboo as well as unique conductive yarns that make the garment feel like any other piece of everyday clothing. The collection at launch will include men’s and women’s underwear in various styles, while other garments like bras and tank tops will be introduced in the coming months. Planned updates in the coming months to the app will include access to ECG tracking, pending Health Canada and FDA approval (feature not currently available), notifications to caregivers about slip and fall incidents, machine learning to provide more meaningful insights and behavioral changes suggestions, that can help improve one’s health & well-being.

Special Introductory Open Beta Pricing for Skiin

The starter kit is specially priced for the Beta Launch at $99 USD / $129 CAD (official price: $299 USD / $369 CAD) and will include four pairs of underwear in the style of choice, one Skiin pod, Skiin Connected Life app, charging accessories and a garment wash bag. Please note that the launch price is for a limited number of kits.

Award-winning Children’s Hands-on Science and Innovation Centers – Kids Science Labs

    Press Release

    updated: Aug 29, 2019

Kids Science Labs today announced an exciting new hands-on science series “Introduction to Chemistry and Physics” for children 3-12 years old.

This all-new series takes students on an adventure into the core concepts of Chemistry and Physics and applies them to real world experiences – from why trees can grow so tall to the chemistry and physics required to design running shoes. “Kids want to mix, build, break and explore. Early experience with hands-on science opens doors to problem solving and creativity and also builds an early interest in STEM careers,” says Nina Tinucci, Director of Education.

This new series has been under development for two years. “We are very excited about our Introduction to Chemistry and Physics series, which provides kids an early advantage for understanding concepts they will see in high school and college,” says Keith Norsym, co-founder at Kids Science Labs. “There is something deeply satisfying about solving a problem and being able to apply that new knowledge to the world around us – as Chemistry and Physics are intertwined in our daily lives.”

    Features and benefits include:

    • Children and parents have been requesting a fun and engaging introduction to real chemistry and physics to help prepare for school.
    • Studies have shown that early and regular exposure to science and problem-solving leads to long-term out-performance.
    • On average children receive 45 minutes of science instruction a week; classes at KSL are 75 minutes a week.
    • A STEM degree is just about the most valuable asset a young person can have in the modern economy.

The “Introduction to Chemistry & Physics” series will be available starting September 10 at all of their learning centers. For more information, visit www.kidssciencelabs.com.

  • Zigurat to Launch the 5th Edition of the Global MBA in Digital Business

Zigurat to Launch the 5th Edition of the Global MBA in Digital Business

    [ad_1]

As companies need to move beyond digital optimization of processes and to expand through truly transformational practices, the need for change agents to help manage this cultural shift inside organizations increases.

    Press Release

    updated: Aug 27, 2019

To celebrate the launch of the upcoming edition of the Global MBA in Digital Business, Zigurat Innovation and Business School was inspired by the transformative journey that Tess Guetat, an integrated communication and marketing expert and an alumna of the program, underwent when she successfully moved to communication, people and culture change management.

From Belgium, and with an international career spanning Europe, the USA and the Middle East, Tess now — a change management consultant — assists organizations with specific interventions that help them advance in their change journey. To “better respond to employees’ and customers’ needs for higher engagement and for companies requirements for continuous innovation,” she dedicated her Master’s project to create a blueprint for the transformation of a traditional network communication agency. For her transformation proposal, she also received an award for “Outstanding Final Project: that recognizes excellence in the final project and the presentation of a real applicable transformation case.”

    Delivering added value to clients

With the rise of disruptive technologies and the coming of age of new audiences with different media consumption, new business models have emerged. For companies, this means defining more competitive, efficient and profitable customers’ and employees’ engagement strategies, to best respond to an increasingly digital native audience.

Tess goes on to say that traditional marketing agencies that have transformed to a service offering closer to either tech or strategic consultancies and changed their brand perception, have enjoyed a positive reception from brands and shown great results in terms of acquiring more clients and projects through new and additional revenue streams. Thereby securing themselves a place in the future of the industry.

The key to success is understanding that rather than delivering a service, agencies must deliver value for their clients. One way for an agency to deliver value is to help clients improve their customer experience. “The Global MBA in Digital Business taught us the latest innovation accelerators and how these can be applied to various industries and across an organization.” Tess highlights the use of Artificial Intelligence, programmatics, machine learning, deep learning, big data, and analytics, as the most often used innovators in the marketing industry to impact the customers’ journey and experience.

Education is key to being able to innovate

Applying transformation processes is a great challenge for many companies who cannot put on hold their daily operations to cater for change. It’s also harder to foresee future needs for change when the business is currently doing well. This has created the need for change management professionals who feel at home in a digital ecosystem and have a visionary approach to innovation.

This demand for change agents is what Zigurat’s Global MBA in Digital Business has set out to respond to, by training innovators of the next generation capable of moving beyond digital optimization and expanding organizations through truly transformational practices.

  • How to Navigate Towards Digital Success With the Right Roadmap

How to Navigate Towards Digital Success With the Right Roadmap

    [ad_1]

Facing the process of digitalization with a plan delivers better results than initiating digital projects without any structure

    Press Release

    updated: Aug 13, 2019

Due to high demand, Zigurat Innovation and Technology Business School has relaunched the Digital Roadmap Series as part of its summer course offerings to help the business world keep up with the rapid digital developments shaping the future of all industries.

Successful organizations are defined by their clear business direction. The same applies to digital transformation, a clear vision and an established roadmap are necessary to define the way forward. To potentiate those who feel somewhat lost while it seems that everyone else is going digital, Zigurat decided to relaunch the collection of 6 eBooks Digital Roadmap Series developed in part by Robin Weninger, professor of Global MBA in Digital Business.

On the road to digital success

The era of world-shaping innovations and emerging trendsetters will be easy on neither the companies nor the professionals who lead them. But one thing has become clear: the companies who have initiated the process of digitalization with a defined strategy perform much better than companies initiating digital projects without a clear structure. There are 4 steps that every company must follow to gain a foothold in the digital world.

The first step is to identify the current position of the organization by carrying out an analysis of the external environment. Companies should then also conduct internal analyses of their foundation and enabling factors. Once the status quo has been evaluated, first digital initiatives must be derived and put into action. Meanwhile, the organization must start working on a digital maturity plan, the purpose of which is to enable the entire company to become digitally fluent.

Lastly, if everything has worked out as planned during the above steps, the newly defined digital strategy and goals must be applied to the daily business to pave the way for future success.

    People first, technology second

The change does not occur immediately, but progressively. In other words, the digital revolution turns into a digital evolution, a less disruptive but never-ending change process. “Supported by the right communication and targeted management decisions, organizations can by this succeed in establishing a positive attitude of their employees towards change,” states Robin Weninger in Digital Roadmap Series. He adds: “Active participation forms an essential integral part of the digital mindset and of intrapreneurship required within the organization.”

Without any doubt, digital aspects are reshaping our daily reality. The workforce is more and more encouraged and enabled to contribute actively to the company’s economic success. Everything must be aimed at applying the agile and digital mindset at all levels of the organization rather than solely maintaining a high technological standard.

In this new technological scenario, Zigurat has developed jointly with the Institut de Formacio Continua-IL3 of Universitat de Barcelona the Global MBA in Digital Business, designed for all those professionals who want to foster their technological and decision-making skills and add a differential value to increase their competitiveness in the global market.

Schwegman Named in Top 25 Firms for Minority Attorneys

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Jul 17, 2019

Schwegman Lundberg & Woessner is pleased to have been recognized as being among the top 25 law firms within its size category in the U.S. for minority attorneys, as reported by Law360 on July 7, 2019.

“Both minority and gender diversity and inclusion are the focus of concerted efforts at Schwegman,” said Theresa Stadheim, Schwegman Principal and Diversity and Inclusion Steering Group member. “Schwegman has been very generous in providing support for diversity and inclusion events and has been visionary in its efforts, both nationally and locally, to get minorities and women interested in STEM careers at all levels.”

Steven Lundberg, Managing Principal, commented: “We have been very active in efforts for fostering a culture of diversity and inclusion. Diversity can be particularly challenging in our demographic, since our intellectual property boutique firm is focused toward patent prosecution and our clients are somewhat skewed toward electrical and software technologies. While we have gained from a more diverse demographic in our San Jose office, and via our satellite attorney program that allows attorneys to work remotely from their preferred geographic locations, we continue to place great emphasis on diversity and inclusion at all locations and levels of our firm.”

Suneel Arora, Schwegman Principal and Hiring Committee member, elaborated further: “Diversity is an ongoing effort that is discussed at every firm Board meeting and considered throughout our recruiting process, but I believe that it is our inclusive firm culture and excellent track record of retaining attorneys that will make our efforts successful and sustainable. I can personally attest to the opportunities for growth and success that are available to all and that are actively fostered at Schwegman. Moreover, our flat organization and the respect and autonomy accorded to all attorneys (and staff) makes it easier for minority attorneys to succeed.”

“At Schwegman, attorneys have the ability to choose which technologies and clients are the best fit for their skills and interests, which is paramount to success, satisfaction, and longevity in our profession,” added Andre Marais, Schwegman Board and Diversity and Inclusion Steering Group member. “We don’t try to micromanage to achieve over-granular diversity objectives. Instead, we try to focus on recruiting, mentoring, and promoting with a focus on supporting individual team members, which we view as our best path to success for our entire team.”

Further extensive information about ongoing diversity and inclusion efforts at Schwegman can be found here.

Four Hundred Next-Gen Leaders Selected to Carry Forward TFF’s Mission in 200 Cities Around the World

    Press Release

    updated: Jun 14, 2019

The Thought For Food (TFF) Foundation is expanding its global footprint with the addition of 400 Ambassadors who are tasked with multiplying the organization’s mission and impact in more than 200 cities across the globe.

The new cohort of TFF Ambassadors represents 65 countries around the world and will work closely with TFF’s Regional Coordinators as committed “boots on the ground” – helping to identify and develop strong relationships with promising talents and startups that can benefit from TFF’s entrepreneurial training and acceleration programs.

The TFF Ambassadors were chosen from a pool of nearly 2,000 applicants after going through a rigorous pre-selection process that included a four-week trial period focused on testing their practical skills, collaborative spirit and commitment to join TFF’s global community. As part of the trial period, the pre-selected TFF Ambassadors carried out over 500 grassroots activities to raise awareness about food and agriculture issues in their local communities, including farm tours, documentary screenings, discussion sessions, sustainable dinners, recording of podcasts and TV interviews.

“Becoming a TFF Ambassador is a great opportunity to create positive impact,” says Fernando Salerno, a TFF Ambassador selected from the Venezuelan capital Caracas and co-founder of Níspero, an organization which connects isolated small-scale farmers in rural areas, helps them to reach markets and supports them in regenerating depleted soils. “This role gives me the resources to expose the Venezuelan crisis and the opportunities connected to it, to work with the innovation community around me and to raise awareness about the pressing food and agricultural challenges we face here in my country.”

Despite facing severe gas, electricity and water issues in his country, Fernando and his team of TFF Ambassadors found creative and impactful ways to share the TFF story, including conducting interviews on one of the most-viewed national TV programs, as well as on a radio show focused on entrepreneurship. They also ran several workshops for small-scale produce farmers and business peers focused on community-based sustainable farming practices.

“It has been inspiring to watch the TFF Ambassadors demonstrate such passion and commitment to our cause throughout the trial period. These are a diverse group of talented leaders who are joining our global community, ready to share their experiences, expertise and local networks in supporting TFF’s mission,” stated Sujala Balaji, TFF Regional Coordinator for North America and founder of Kosha Foods, a Canadian startup for plant-based protein alternatives. “I am very excited and look forward to working with them in building stronger regional communities and collectively working towards the global challenges facing food and sustainability.”

The TFF Ambassadors will play an important role in recruiting innovative food and agriculture projects from every part of the world to join the next edition of the annual TFF Challenge on Oct. 16 (World Food Day). This year, TFF Challenge participants will gain access to the all-new TFF Digital Labs, the world’s first 21st-century learning and startup accelerator program optimized for next-gen entrepreneurs in the food and agriculture sector.

Interested to learn more about TFF’s work as the world’s next-generation innovation engine in food and agriculture? Press Release

    updated: May 23, 2019

Kids Science Labs, the country’s leading hands-on science (STEAM) retail brand for kids, is opening two new state-of-the-art learning centers this June.

What began as a single location in 2011 has grown into a nationally recognized brand that is teaching kids problem-solving, creativity and innovation. Started by two dads and engineers, Shegan Campbell and Keith Norsym, the science-learning centers run classes, camps and events for children that enable them to explore their world through hands-on experiments all year round.

With computer programming and STEM fields expanding at rapid rates, parents and kids are searching for opportunities to gain an early advantage, even before pre-school. With its passionate teachers, innovative learning spaces and dynamic LIFE’S Curriculum, Kids Science Labs enables kids to truly outperform in all academic fields. “Our children’s success is no longer defined by knowing facts. The ability to solve new, unique and challenging problems will enable our children’s future success no matter their chosen career,”  said Keith Norsym, co-founder of Kids Science Labs.  As they discover how a bicycle works, why a car slides on ice or why fruits have different types of skin, “kids practice courageous and creative critical thinking to develop new solutions,” he added.

To celebrate the expansion, the two new locations will offer Grand Opening events on June 1 at their Roscoe Village and Vernon Hills locations.

    About Kids Science Labs
Kids Science Labs, based in Chicago, was founded by two dads and engineers who wanted to solve a problem. The problem was “kids love science before they can speak; they love mixing, building, figuring out how to unlock cabinets, and what happens to shaving cream when you smear it on the floor. So why is it that kids love science until 5th grade and then treat science as if it were boring, too difficult or just not cool?”

Since opening the first center in 2011, Kids Science Labs has taught over 100,000 students at their centers located in Chicago and Seattle. As the company continues to expand nationally, kids ages 2-14 years old are becoming better problem solvers and critical thinkers through hands-on science experiments. Parents see their children gain confidence and learn core science concepts, all while having fun and exploring questions they are interested in.

Kids Science Labs is on a mission to enable the next generation of creative thinkers by using science and questions that kids ask every day to discover how the world works.

NCJFCJ Recognizes UNLV Immigration Clinic as 2018 Innovator of the Year

    [ad_1]

For offering law students real-world experience providing pro bono deportation defense

    Press Release

    updated: Aug 6, 2018

The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ) announced the 2018 Innovator of the Year at the 4th annual Justice Innovation Awards: the UNLV Immigration Clinic, Edward M. Bernstein & Associates Children’s Rights Program, at the William S. Boyd School of Law in Las Vegas, Nev.

The Innovator of the Year Award honors an active, in-good-standing NCJFCJ member who has inspired, sponsored, promoted or led an innovation or accomplishment of national significance in juvenile justice, child abuse and neglect, family law, and/or domestic violence.

The UNLV Immigration Clinic is an example of the world-class education students receive at UNLV and demonstrates the commitment UNLV Law students have to standing up for others in Nevada.

    Catherine Cortez Masto, U.S. Senator

“It is the NCJFCJ’s honor to recognize the work of the UNLV Immigration Clinic team at William S. Boyd Law,” said Judge John J. Romero, Jr., NCJFCJ president. “We recognize their tireless commitment to serving vulnerable populations – immigrant children and families – especially those who find themselves in our justice system. We hope to continue to raise awareness of these core issues affecting our nation’s families.”

The William S. Boyd School of Law is an organizational member of the NCJFCJ, and its UNLV Immigration Clinic trains student attorneys to defend people in deportation proceedings, allowing them the opportunity to provide innovative ways to offer legal services to immigrants in Nevada. The clinic serves as a resource for undocumented and DACAmented students.

Statistics show that only 37 percent of immigrants in deportation proceedings have lawyers, and immigrants who had a lawyer were 15 times more likely to avoid deportation. The UNLV Immigration Clinic offers direct representation to as many of these children as it can, and trains other pro bono lawyers to do the same. The clinic works closely with the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada to represent unaccompanied children in both family court and in their immigration cases.

“The UNLV Immigration Clinic is a champion for those who might otherwise not have a voice or representation,” said U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV). “Their work changes lives and strengthens our communities. I am thrilled to see this organization, and its mission recognized and celebrated for its groundbreaking work. The UNLV Immigration Clinic is an example of the world-class education students receive at UNLV and demonstrates the commitment UNLV Law students have to standing up for others in Nevada. The Immigration Clinic’s dedication to fighting for families and children with the toughest immigration cases remains incredibly important, especially now.”

Dr. Rebecca Nathanson, Associate Dean for Experiential Legal Education, UNLV William S. Boyd School of Law and Claudia Noriega-Bernstein, Marketing Director, Edward M. Bernstein & Associates accepted the award.

About the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ):
Founded in 1937, the Reno, Nev.-based National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, is the nation’s oldest judicial membership organization and focused on improving the effectiveness of our nation’s juvenile and family courts. New Grant Opportunity From Agentic Learning Will Help Schools Successfully Implement Student-Centered Learning

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Feb 2, 2018

Empowering students by fostering student agency has been shown to improve outcomes, leading to gains in student engagement and achievement. But many school systems struggle to implement this approach effectively.

To remedy this problem, Agentic Learning today launched a competitive grant opportunity for school districts to work with the organization on an innovative and comprehensive one-year program to engage all learners and improve academic outcomes. Agentic Learning is conducting a nationwide search for school districts that believe student agency should be a primary goal in education and will award grants to two districts upon completion of a rigorous review process.

We have uncovered the key to raising student achievement and preparing students for the dynamic and ever-changing world they are facing.

    Dr. Michael Gielniak, CEO

“We believe we have uncovered the key to raising student achievement and preparing students for the dynamic and ever-changing world they are facing — and this key is student agency. When student-centered learning is implemented authentically, student agency occurs. Unfortunately, this is not the experience in many schools today. As a result, students are disengaged — and learning is stagnant,” said Dr. Michael Gielniak, CEO of Agentic Learning. “We are looking to partner with two school districts who believe in the importance of student agency and who are willing to do this challenging but groundbreaking work.”

“In most school districts, new innovations are implemented top-down, and teachers are treated as cogs in a machine, not given the agency they need to authentically put the deep substance of new pedagogies in place,” said Marie Bjerede, President of Agentic Learning. “Instead, we help districts give teachers ownership over the path and pace they use to lead student agency and turbo-charge learning in their classrooms.”

In Agentic Learning’s student agency program, the goal is to produce teachers who say, “I can’t believe I get paid for this,” and students who say, “I can’t believe I get credit for this,” as they find themselves achieving their goals with hard work that feels like fun. Agentic Learning’s tools and resources help districts foster these outcomes by offering an environment that supports student agency, intrinsic motivation, and flow.

Beginning today, school districts can apply for the grant, which provides the one-year Agentic Learning program and support free of charge. The application period closes on March 1, 2018.

More information can be found at www.agenticlearning.org. Follow us on Twitter @agenticlearning.

Agentic Learning is a mission-driven company formed in 2017 to address the challenges districts face in implementing initiatives in a way that actually drives improved student outcomes. Too often initiatives with great promise have no significant effect once they make it to the classroom, or if they work in one classroom they don’t scale. Agentic Learning has developed a protocol that addresses the failure of promising initiatives to scale throughout a district that is based in fostering student agency as a component of these initiatives and empowering teachers to take ownership of the path and pace of implementation.  Through these mechanisms, the frequent systemic failure of initiatives like Project Based Learning, Inquiry, Design Thinking, and others to significantly impact student outcomes is addressed.

FieldTurf CORE: The World’s First Super Fiber

    [ad_1]

FieldTurf is proud to introduce its latest fiber, CORE, the first multi-layer dual-polymer fiber ever. CORE rewrites the playbook for sports turf, reinvents the playing field, and redefines the player experience.

Engineered as the premier system for premier fields, CORE is designed to deliver a more realistic, textured, grass-like shape with optimal durability and resiliency.

CORE is more than a new groundbreaking fiber for us; it is a platform for future innovations. Our entire team has been dedicated to the development of our latest innovation, and it is with great pride that we introduce the first multi-layer dual-polymer fiber in the industry.

    Eric Daliere, FieldTurf President

Single-layer polyethylene fibers have built-in limitations. FieldTurf has surpassed the limitations with CORE’s multi-layer technology. The system is constructed to deliver the highest fiber performance and resiliency available on the market. CORE is designed to provide elite high schools, high level collegiate programs and professional teams with a system that exceeds even FieldTurf’s current industry-leading products.

Rutgers University is among the first organizations to install CORE at High Point Solutions Stadium. “FieldTurf is one of the great innovators in artificial turf surfaces, and we are pleased to continue our partnership with an industry leader,” said Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Pat Hobbs. “We are committed to providing our coaches and players with best-in-class facilities, and this is another step in that process for all our student-athletes who compete at High Point Solutions Stadium.”

“CORE is more than a new groundbreaking fiber for us; it is a platform for future innovations,” said FieldTurf President, Eric Daliere. “Our entire team has been dedicated to the development of our latest innovation, and it is with great pride that we introduce the first multi-layer dual-polymer fiber in the industry.”

Labosport, a global leader in sport surface certification, tested CORE using the rigorous Fiber Performance Index — which measures durability, resilience and softness. The surface emerged with Labosport’s highest-ever FPI score of 89.

CORE features FieldTurf’s heavyweight 3-layer infill system which has showcased a significant lower incidence of injuries per recent research by Michael C. Meyers, a professor in Idaho State University’s Department of Sport Science and Physical Education.
