Will the stock market be open on Columbus Day?

    [ad_1]

It’s a regular day of business for the U.S. stock market on Monday, October 10, as equity exchanges stay open for Columbus Day, a federal holiday that also has been recognized as Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Bond markets, however, take the day off, which means a long weekend for the Treasury market, corporate bonds and other forms of tradable debt, starting after the close of business on Friday.

Stocks have endured a brutal selloff in the first nine months of the year as the Federal Reserve has worked to fight inflation that’s been stuck near it highest levels since the early 1980s.

The central bank’s main tool to battle inflation has been to dramatically increase interest rates, while also shrinking its balance sheet, in an effort to tighten financial conditions and squelch demand for goods and services, while also bringing down stubbornly high costs of living, including food, shelter and energy prices.

The Fed’s focus in recent months also has been on cooling the roaring labor market, with strong wage gains in the past year viewed as one of several culprits behind elevated inflation.

Friday’s jobs report for September pegged the unemployment rate as matching a prepandemic low of 3.5%, dashing hopes for now of a significant trend toward a pullback in the labor market.

    The S&P 500 index
    SPX,
    -3.03%

tumbled 1.9% on Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average
    DJIA,
    -2.39%

was down 1.5% and the Nasdaq Composite Index
    COMP,
    -3.89%

was off 2.6%. And early October rally had offered some hope for a bounce for stocks, after a brutal first nine months for investors.

Bonds also have undergone a painful repricing this year as volatility tied to the Fed’s monetary tightening campaign has eroded the value of bonds issued in the past decade of low rates.

The S&P 500 is down about 23% for the year, the Dow off 19% and the Nasdaq off 31% since January. The 10-year Treasury rate
    TMUBMUSD10Y,
    3.884%

was near 3.9% Friday, after recently touching 4%, it’s highest since 2010

  • Japan to pay up to $320M for US company’s chip production

Japan to pay up to $320M for US company’s chip production

    [ad_1]

TOKYO — Japan is providing a major U.S. chipmaker a subsidy of up to 46.6 billion yen ($322 million) to support its plan to produce advanced memory chips at a Hiroshima factory, the Japanese trade minister said Friday.

The announcement to subsidize Micron Technology comes on the heels of U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris’ visit in Japan as the two countries step up cooperation on expanding manufacturing and supply chains for critical materials.

“I hope the deal will contribute to further expansion of cooperation between Japan and the United States in the area of semiconductors,” Japan’s Economy and Trade Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura said.

He said the government approved the deal Friday under a law related to economic security.

Japan has set up its own fund to support semiconductor production, and Friday’s agreement is its third deal.

During her trip to Asia this week, Harris met with Japanese officials and semiconductor company executives to seek greater cooperation in strengthening semiconductor development and production amid China’s growing influence.

Micron was among the companies that participated in the meeting with Harris, along with Tokyo Electron, Nikon, Hitachi High-Tech Group, Fujitsu Ltd.

Micron said in a statement it will use the subsidy to strengthen production capacity and speed up development of the company’s 1-beta DRAM — memory chips that are key to advanced data facilities — as well as technology for a 5G network upgrade and artificial intelligence.

The United States is working to solidify its technology cooperation with Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, while trying to increase its domestic semiconductor manufacturing, amid China’s own investment in computer chips.

The deal Friday “symbolizes the investment and integration of our two economies and supply chains,” said U.S. Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel, who has been promoting economic security between the two allies. “And that will only accelerate from here forward.”

Nishimura has stressed the U.S.-Japan alliance on semiconductors, energy and other areas.

Japan was once a world leader in computer chip manufacturing, but its status has eroded over the last two decades, and the country is increasingly worried about falling behind.

Japan has allocated 476 billion yen ($3.3 billion) in subsidies for a new factory in Japan’s southern prefecture of Kumamoto being built in a partnership between the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Sony Group and Denso Corp.

Japan is also providing up to 92.9 billion yen ($644 million) to another facility in central Japan’s Mie prefecture jointly built by Western Digital Corp. and Kioxia Corp.

Kelenda Allen-James uses her expertise in information technology to help others, something she has always been passionate about. For nearly four years, she has held the position of IT Support Manager at St. HOPE Leadership Academy, a high school-preparatory public charter school located in New York City.

“As a nonprofit technologist, I am able to bring affordable mission-based technology to organizations,” Ms. Allen-James said. “This allows for less money to go to overhead and more funding to go to the mission of the organization.”

In her role, Ms. Allen-James uses her skills and expertise in educational technology, network administration and technology management. Her numerous responsibilities include managing all school-wide technology projects and issues, evaluating new technologies, managing outside vendors, developing customer support policies, and much more.

Although she often faces challenges along the way, including finding all the stakeholders at the beginning of an initiative, Ms. Allen-James acknowledged the most rewarding part of her career is when she sees the positive impact efforts have on students’ lives. “If the data I provide allows a student’s family to improve their scholar’s attendance, or the savings I generate by converting telephone services to VoIP allows for more funding for permanent housing to an additional person, all my efforts were worth it,” she added.

In the future, Ms. Allen James hopes to increase the conversations the nonprofit community is having about how technology can move their missions forward.

  • ITJobMatch.com Offers IT Skill-Based Job Matching

ITJobMatch.com Offers IT Skill-Based Job Matching

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    Jun 6, 2016

ITJobMatch is an IT-focused job platform that matches employers and job seekers based upon certain skills and needs. It was developed to eliminate the job board industry’s oldest problem which is the limitations of keyword search associated with résumés and job posts. That is, it’s very easy to post a job or résumé for the world to see, but difficult to search those records and find the required candidate or best job.

ITJobMatch is designed specifically to bypass these obstacles inherent in keyword search.  Using a robust and granular taxonomy of IT skills, ITJobMatch pairs employer technical needs to job seeker skills. With this approach, complete job seeker profiles and job posts are automatically matched to the best fit without performing nebulous keyword searches.

Other job boards have addressed the insufficiencies of keyword search by adding job categories and user-entered skill tags to help narrow search results. These filters, however, are often added as an afterthought, and many of the categories and skill tags are either redundant or too broad to be much use. Alternatively, ITJobMatch is built around a hierarchical taxonomy of IT skills without any duplicates, and includes niche skills not found on other job boards. As a result, ITJobMatch gives employers and job seekers the ability to control the scope of their search in a way that isn’t possible anywhere else.

The introduction of ITJobMatch comes at a crucial time. Due to communication technology advances, it is becoming more and more practical for employers to hire remote workers or offshore contractors. With hiring and contracting trending toward a global market, the opportunities for job seekers and the options for employers are expanding at a breakneck pace—and this is especially true for the IT industry. This makes ITJobMatch and its unique skill matching system even more important in helping connect job seeker skills to employer needs all across the globe.
