  • Philip Rivers interviewing for Bills coaching job after brief NFL return: report

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

It does not seem like Philip Rivers wants to stay away from professional football.

Just as he became a Hall of Fame semifinalist, Rivers pushed back his eligibility for Canton to return to the NFL after nearly five years away, playing three games for the Indianapolis Colts this past season.

But now, in his second retirement stint, Rivers is reportedly interviewing for the vacant Buffalo Bills coaching job.

The Bills fired Sean McDermott on Monday, two days after a controversial loss to the Denver Broncos in the AFC divisional round. Owner Terry Pegula said the loss resulted in McDermott’s firing.

Rivers is currently the head coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama. He announced his official retirement just before the new year.

“I am (done),” Rivers said at the time. “I got a son who will be a senior, and I got that St. Michael football team ready to go. We got beat in the semifinals two years in a row,” he added. “So, it’ll be his senior year. My second son will be a ninth grader. They’ll be on the same team together.

“So, it’ll be fun to get back with the boys back home. The school has been really excited. A lot of them came to the game last week. It’ll be fun. It’ll kick-start our offseason program, to say the least. Maybe the things I say to them they’ll take it a little more seriously now that I was just out there playing.”

Rivers returned amid an injury to Daniel Jones, while Anthony Richardson was also not healthy.

“Everything just lined up,” he said. “It was a place I’d been, a team I was familiar with the offense was exactly the same. The coach I knew. It was all those things that made it kinda the perfect storm.

“I’m back to the sideline. This was a fun three-week blur that nobody saw coming, including myself, and that will be it.”

He sure is back to the sideline, but perhaps it will be an NFL one.

Rivers had 544 passing yards, four touchdown passes and three interceptions in those three starts. He co his NFL playing career with 63,984 passing yards and 425 passing touchdowns.

The Bills’ defeat marked another crushing blow to McDermott’s tenure as the Bills’ head coach. McDermott took the job before the start of the 2017 season, and Buffalo finished under .500 only once since then. He helped guide the Bills to the playoffs in eight of his nine seasons. The team made the conference title game twice but never got back to the Super Bowl.

  • Watching Philip Rivers Play Football Makes Me Feel Old

Surely the most astonishing detail in this utterly astonishing story is that Rivers was waiting for Steichen’s call. He’d been watching the Colts’ game when he saw Jones go down, and later said that the thought of replacing Jones had immediately crossed his mind. Rivers and Steichen are close; they worked together during Rivers’s final season with the Los Angeles Chargers, in 2019, where Steichen had been the quarterbacks coach. Still, why Rivers might think that anyone would turn to a middle-aged man who had been retired for roughly five years to try to take a team to the N.F.L. playoffs is one of the great mysteries of our age. Rivers, after all, is a grandfather. An actual grandfather. And yet Steichen did call, and he was not calling to inquire how the grandson was.

So Rivers celebrated his forty-fourth birthday on a Monday, and on Wednesday was signed to the Colts’ practice squad. He arrived in Indianapolis with the gut of a dad who “works out,” which, of course, is what he is. But Steichen appeared set on starting him. The two men waved away concerns about his fitness. Athleticism had never been Rivers’s biggest strength; even in his prime, no defense needed to scheme for the possibility that he might run. And it was true that Rivers knew the Colts’ playbook as well as anyone—he used a watered-down version of it for his high-school team, and had frequently discussed it with Steichen. Most of all, he knew what it was like to lead a team under pressure. Even when Leonard was cleared to return to practice, Steichen hinted that he planned to put Rivers at the helm. Leonard was a rookie. He’d never damned the odds.

Against the Seahawks, Rivers nearly did it. He even threw the game’s only honest-to-God touchdown. He led the Colts on a drive that ended with a sixty-yard field goal with forty-seven seconds remaining to take a one-point lead, only to watch the Indy defense let it slip away as the Seahawks answered with a field goal of their own. (A late blown lead—in that regard, it was a classic Rivers game.) He can still read coverages and throw a mean checkdown. And yet watching him throw was—how do I put this?—confusing. Unnatural, even. It was like watching a squid eat a hummingbird. Or like seeing the right tackle under center. Rivers played almost the entire game out of the shotgun. His primary strategies, as best I could tell: get rid of the ball as quickly as possible, and get out of the way of Jonathan Taylor, the Colts’ terrific running back. Some of Rivers’s throws did not cross the line of scrimmage, and those that did were hurled ducks. Rivers has always had a quick, shot-put-style release, but he once had a cannon for an arm. Not anymore. Last Sunday, he seemed to struggle to even throw the ball away. There was an odd juxtaposition between how quickly Rivers got rid of the ball and how slowly it wobbled out of his hand. There was no question of any run-pass option or quarterback draw; Rivers couldn’t move his feet. At one point, he slipped on the logo, got up, and lumbered for a few yards, as bodies flew all around him. It was like seeing a film that has somehow been slowed down and sped up simultaneously.

Given that Rivers nearly led the Colts to a win anyway, I found myself wondering whether the quarterback—universally accepted as the most important position on the field—actually matters all that much. Sure, Tom Brady, blah blah blah. But Eli Manning has as many Super Bowl rings as his brother Peyton. And Dan Marino, widely considered one of the greatest quarterbacks ever, has none. These days, the question seems especially pertinent. Is the San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy, who was the very last pick in the 2022 N.F.L. draft before leading the 49ers to the Super Bowl two years later, a mediocre Q.B. or an M.V.P.-calibre player? Is Jalen Hurts, who’s been to two Super Bowls with the Philadelphia Eagles in the past three years, any good as a quarterback? Should Sean McVay, the Los Angeles Rams’ offensive guru, get fitted for a helmet? Could a coach just suit up? Maybe what a team needs is a top defense, a good kicker, decent schemes, an excellent running back, and some guy taking snaps who can stay calm in a frenetic situation and won’t screw things up. Maybe the quarterback doesn’t have to be king. Maybe socialism works!

Or maybe Rivers should head home to Alabama and enjoy the company of his ten children while he—and the Colts’ tight ends, who were getting smashed trying to catch Rivers’s floating passes—is still in one piece. There are plenty of stories of athletes who excel in their forties. Lindsey Vonn just won a World Cup downhill, at forty-one, five years after retiring, following a partial knee replacement. LeBron James was one of the ten best players in the N.B.A. last year, despite turning forty. We’re not dead yet. I can do more pullups now than I could at eighteen. But the career of a football player is nasty, brutish, and short for a reason.

Riley Leonard is active. Anthony Richardson is returning to practice. Frankly, Andrew Luck is only thirty-six years old—doesn’t anyone in Indianapolis still have his phone number? Meanwhile, Steichen reportedly has plans to start Rivers again on Monday, against the 49ers, who are fighting for the No. 1 seed in the N.F.C. My knee hurts just thinking about it. ♦

  • Colts star believes Daniel Jones should come back in 2026: ‘I’m on board with it’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Daniel Jones‘ 2025 NFL season came to a bitter end, as the Indianapolis Colts starting quarterback will have to watch from the sidelines the rest of the way after an Achilles injury this past week.

For the Colts, the injury is a massive loss as the team eyes a playoff spot. For Jones personally, the injury couldn’t have come at a worse time considering he’s a free agent in March.

Jones signed a prove-it deal with the Colts for this season after a tumultuous 2024 campaign that saw the New York Giants, the team that drafted him sixth overall in 2019, release him mid-season after signing him to a long-term extension. Not only did Jones win the starting role over Anthony Richardson, the Colts’ fourth overall pick in 2023, but he shined in head coach Shane Steichen’s offense.

While Jones will tell you he’s entirely focused on how he can help the Colts from the sideline, star receiver Michael Pittman Jr. speaks for many on the team when he says he’s “on board” with the team bringing back Jones in 2026.

“Absolutely,” Pittman told Fox News Digital when asked if Jones should get another contract from Indianapolis. “I mean, I would love to see him here. The work that he’s put in and the body of work he’s had, I think they should strongly consider it.

“I’m on board with it and I think that most of the players are, if not all of them as well.”

PHILIP RIVERS EMBRACES NFL COMEBACK AT QUARTERBACK AFTER RETURN TO COLTS: ‘I THOUGHT THAT SHIP HAD SAILED’

Jones was just 104 passing yards away from his career high through only 13 games, tallying 3,101 on 261 completions (381 attempts). Jones did notch a career-high in completion percentage (68%), while throwing 19 touchdowns and interceptions. He also ran in five scores for the Colts.

The seven-year veteran clearly felt comfortable with his new team, and it helps that running back Jonathan Taylor is performing like an MVP in the backfield, while the likes of Pittman, rookie Ty Warren, Alec Pierce and Josh Downs are all contributing for the Colts.

But Jones’ injury makes things interesting now, because teams obviously want to dish out millions at the quarterback position to someone who’s healthy. Jones had an injury history beyond the Achilles, too, as he was already playing with a fractured fibula, which may have contributed to the Achilles injury.

With the Giants, Jones also tore his ACL in 2023, while dealing with an ailment during his time in New York.

But depending on when Jones can return to the field, perhaps his home is in Indianapolis for years to come.

“I do feel very fortunate to be here,” Jones told Fox News Digital last month. “This time a year ago was obviously very different for me and kind of finding what was next and where I was going to go. … The opportunity to join the Colts and play with these guys has been incredible. Been very fortunate that way, and yeah, I think I’ve learned a lot in New York and starting my career there. Grateful for that, but you try to learn along the way and take advantage of the opportunities you have.”

Pittman teamed up with Oral-B, which was recently named the official toothbrush of the NFL, and he shot some fun content with beloved Colts mascot, Blue.

  • Colts receiver Michael Pittman Jr provides update on security guard he accidentally decked on sideline

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A scary moment occurred during the Indianapolis Colts and Jacksonville Jaguars game when Michael Pittman Jr. accidentally knocked over a security guard, who fell hard on the turf near the end zone.

On what would’ve been a touchdown catch – Pittman was called for offensive pass interference to negate the grab in the end zone – he was pushed and lost his footing in rainy conditions as he slid onto the grass.

But Pittman immediately hit a security guard, who wasn’t looking behind him as he performed his duty looking up at the Jacksonville crowd at EverBank Stadium. The security guard hit the turf hard, as the back of his head slammed on the ground.

Pittman was quick to check on the man before eventually rejoining his team on the field.

After the game, Pittman posted on X hoping to find out the status of the security guard.

“Any updates on the security guard that hit his head on the sideline yesterday?” Pittman asked his followers with a praying hands emoji.

TOM BRADY SAYS HE ‘CERTAINLY COULD’ PLAY QUARTERBACK AT 4 AMID A PHIIP RIVERS COMEBACK

Fox News Digital asked Pittman on Wednesday if he ever heard about the man he collided with.

“So, I got an update from other people,” said Pittman, who also discussed his partnership with Oral-B. “We’re still working on — we have a great media team in our building. They said they’re going to get his name for me so I can reach out personally and check on him.

“That was a scary thing for everybody involved, but they said that he walked off on his own power. He’s doing good, so that’s good.”

NFL players are always going the extra mile to help their teams win games, but sometimes the heat of competition results in those bystanders on the sideline becoming collateral damage. This was one of the scarier hits between a player and gameday personnel, but it’s good to hear that the security guard appears to be good.

(Doug Engle/Florida Times-Union)

That would’ve been the first touchdown pass of rookie Riley Leonard’s young career if Pittman’s grab stood for six points. But it ultimately didn’t work out in the 36-19 loss, where starting quarterback Daniel Jones was lost for the season due to a torn Achilles in the first quarter.

As a result, the Colts have signed 44-year-old Philip Rivers, who came out of retirement to play for the last time he suited for in the NFL back in 2020 – Pittman’s rookie year in the league.

  • Tom Brady says he ‘certainly could’ play quarterback at 48 amid a Philip Rivers comeback

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Philip Rivers, at 44 years old, is back in an NFL building as the Indianapolis Colts brought back their former signal caller to potentially help them reach the playoffs.

Rivers hasn’t played in the league since 2020, but the Colts believe he can still sling the pigskin, which begs the question: Does Tom Brady feel the same way?

“Who retires and then unretires and then is ultimately going to retire again? Who does that? That’s ridiculous for Philip to do that,” Brady joked about Rivers rejoining the Colts during his appearance on FOX Sports’ “The Herd.”

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

But could Brady still play quarterback right now at 48 if he decided to reenter the NFL?

“Yes, I certainly could,” he told Colin Cowherd. “I think the answer for me would be yes. I’m not allowed to anymore because I’m a minority owner of the [Las Vegas] Raiders, so I can’t unretire.”

The prior quip from Brady refers to his retirement on Feb. 1, 2022, after playing 22 illustrious seasons in the league. However, just 40 days after his announcement, Brady was back in the saddle with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the 2022 season.

PHILIP RIVERS EMBRACES NFL COMEBACK AT QUARTERBACK AFTER RETURN TO COLTS: ‘I THOUGHT THAT SHIP HAD SAILED’

Then, Brady retired “for good” after that season, where the Bucs lost to the Dallas Cowboys in the playoffs.

And even if Brady wanted to miraculously get back on the gridiron, he wouldn’t be able to considering his stake in the Raiders. It goes against NFL rules.

But Rivers, who has been coaching high school in Alabama since his playing days were complete in 2020, now finds himself in position to potentially start against the Seattle Seahawks on the road this Sunday.

It’s a crucial time for the Colts, losers of their last three games since the bye week, which leaves them at 8-5 this season. They’re gunning to compete with the Jacksonville Jaguars, who they just lost to on Sunday, and are now at 9-4 leading the AFC South. The Houston Texans, who have ripped off five straight wins behind their league-leading defense, are also 8-5, making this a division to watch in the remaining four regular-season games.

The reason for Rivers’ reunion in Indy surrounds the loss of Daniel Jones, who suffered a torn Achilles after trying to play through a broken fibula. Jones was enjoying a season that revitalized his career, which looked entirely different in 2024 after being released by the New York Giants mid-season.

Then, rookie Riley Leonard, who took over for Jones in Jacksonville, suffered a knee injury, which led the Colts to call Rivers. After a visit to see if he was in shape enough to play, they put pen to paper, and now head coach Shane Steichen may be going to the 44-year-old as reporters believe they’re watching him take most of the first-team reps at practice.

“I’m very excited to watch Philip play,” Brady added. “If he’s out there, it’s just very cool. It speaks to how much he loves the game and really what he’s able to do still.”

Rivers may not be too spry, but then again, he told reporters that his strengths on the football field never revolved around what he could do with his legs. It was always the arm talent, showcasing an accurate ball and good decision-making during his time with the Los Angeles Chargers and Colts.

“This game is about, for the quarterback, from the neck up,” Brady said. “We used to have a saying at Michigan, ‘The mental is to the physical as four is to one at the quarterback position.’ That doesn’t really go away. Do you still have the physical ability to still do it — take the hits, make the throws, the drops, buy a little time in the pocket?

“If Philip has been practicing those things, then we’re all going to see it on full display in Seattle on Sunday afternoon.”

  • NFL quarterback rejected Colts offer before Philip Rivers news

Philip Rivers is back in an Indianapolis Colts uniform for the first time since he retired from the game of football following the 2020 season in which he led the team to an 11-6 season and a playoff appearance.

“Certainly, I wasn’t really hanging on to any hope of playing again. I kind of thought that ship had sailed. But something about it excited me. And it’s kind of one of those deals; the door opens and you can either walk through it and find out if you can do it or run from it,” Rivers said this week after being signed to the Colts practice squad after the season-ending Achilles injury to starting quarterback Daniel Jones.

While Rivers is stealing all of the headlines, the Colts reportedly attempted to land another quarterback as well.

  • NFL Week 13: Houston Texans at Indianapolis Colts – Houston Press

If the Houston Texans go on to do anything remarkable the remainder of the year, like make the postseason and win a couple games, the three game stretch where C.J> Stroud was concussed and Davis Mills came in and went 3-0 will be looked back upon as possibly even more surreal than it feels right now.

Mills capped off a perfect record in his three game stint as a starter undefeated, piling up nearly as many wins in 11 days as he did in two seasons back in 2021 and 2022. It’s exactly why Texans GM Nick Caserio has already given Mills two contract extensions, and honestly, those three games might trigger several phone calls to Caserio from opposing GM’s looking for a bridge starter at quarterback.

That’s a conversation for the offseason, though, because now here comes C.J. Stroud, back into the lineup this weekend. The Texans’ defense is playing at a meteoric level right now, so the pressure is on Stroud to steward an offense where “slightly above average” should win enough games to get into the postseason.

This week, the Texans travel to Indianapolis to face the division leading Colts. A win in Indy and, all of a sudden, the Texans’ third straight division crown is back in the conversation. A loss, and the Texans will practically need to run the table to get into the playoffs.

Here are four things to watch for in Indy on Sunday:

    4. Welcome back, C.J. Stroud

It will be very itneresting to see what this offense does with Stroud back at the helm. Prior to going down with his concussion, Stroud was dynamite against San Francisco and briefly against Denver, until he left the game. If that version of Stroud comes back, it’ll be a good day on Sunday. Stroud is 2-0 at Lucas Oil Stadium in his career, and he is 9-4 in AFC South games since arriving in the NFL in 2023. This begins a HUGE six game stretch for Stroud’s contractual future, as well.

    3. Nico versus Sauce

A few weeks ago, just prior to the NFL’s trade deadline, the Colts traded two first round picks to the Jets for former All Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner. It was a risky, “chips all in” move that, thus far, has paid tepid returns, at best. This game is full of huge individual matchups, but none bigger than Gardner going up against Texans No. 1 wideout Nico Collins. Collins has been picking up the pace since a slow start, and now he can have some say in the ongoing debate between who is the better corner between Gardner and Collins’ teammate, Derek Stingley, Jr.

    2. Jonathan Taylor, the head of the snake

When it comes to taking away the most important things that the Colts do well offensively, shutting down running back Jonathan Taylor is the foremost key. Taylor leads the league in rushing yards with 1,197 yards on the ground, but last week against the Chiefs, he was held to 58 yards on 16 carries, and the Colts were running in wet cement the entire fourth quarter and overtime. The Texans are fully capable of taking away the other team’s marquee running back, as they’ve done several times this season. The key will be shutting down Taylor, because….

    1. The “old” Daniel Jones

… Daniel Jones appears to be back to his old ways, and if there is no running game to speak of, then there is no play action, and if there is no play action, it means Jones is pocket fodder for the QB sack tandem of Will Anderson and Danielle Hunter. On top of the general regression of Jones and the offense, which was sensational through the first eight games, Jones is also dealing with a fibula injury that affects his ability to run the football and scramble. The rest of the division has been waiting for the New York Giant version of Jones to show up for three months now. Well, here he is.

  • There are more questions than answers after NFL games Sunday

The Kansas City Chiefs saved their season. The Philadelphia Eagles gave critics more fuel. The Los Angeles Rams made a dominant statement.

There were more questions than answers Sunday in the NFL.

Patrick Mahomes did just enough to rally the Chiefs to a 23-20 overtime victory over the Indianapolis Colts. Kansas City’s dominant defense gave him the opportunity.

Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s unit forced the Colts to go three-and-out on their final four possessions. The Chiefs shut down the NFL’s leading rusher, holding Jonathan Taylor to 58 yards on 16 carries. Colts coach Shane Steichen inexplicably gave Taylor the ball only once on the last three drives of regulation.

Mahomes threw for 352 yards but didn’t have any touchdowns. He looked skittish at times under pressure, rushing his reads and hurrying his passes.

The Chiefs (6-5) couldn’t afford another loss as they fight to make the playoffs after winning nine straight AFC West titles, reaching eight consecutive conference championship games and winning three Super Bowls.

They’ve got a long way to go and a tough game at Dallas (5-5-1) coming up on Thanksgiving Day. Mahomes and the offense need to get in sync for Kansas City to have a shot.

“We’re still not where we want to be at but this was big,” Mahomes said. “Getting that win against a really good football team and kind of proving it to (ourselves) that we can play this kind of football game where it’s not always pretty. I think now we just have to build off that momentum. It’s going to be a short week. We’re playing a good team in the Cowboys, and they can score some points and they have a lot of great players. It’s about rebounding fast, trying to be better, even better this next week going into a big environment, big game and trying to get that win.”

The Colts (8-3) have gone from 7-1 to a team that is going to have to battle to win the AFC South. They’ll face division rivals Jacksonville (7-4) and Houston (6-5) four times over the remaining six games. Their other two opponents are Seattle (8-3) and San Francisco (7-4).

Steichen trusted Daniel Jones to win the game in Kansas City, electing to put the ball in his hands down the stretch instead of giving it to Taylor to protect a lead. Jones couldn’t deliver. He was 3 for 9 for 17 yards on the final four possessions.

“I felt there was a lot of stuff that I wanted to get called that I felt good about in the pass game and we just weren’t efficient doing it and it starts with me,” Steichen said.

    Eagles collapse

The reigning Super Bowl champions built a 21-0 lead in Dallas and looked like they were on their way to snapping Dak Prescott’s 18-game winning streak at home against NFC East opponents.

Jalen Hurts was connecting with A.J. Brown and it seemed Philadelphia would quiet some of the drama surrounding the two superstars.

But the offense regressed, giving Prescott and the Cowboys an opportunity to come back and win 24-21.

The Eagles (8-3) have a comfortable lead over Dallas (5-5-1) and are in position to become the first repeat champion in the division in two decades. But Philadelphia fell behind the Rams (9-2) in the race for the No. 1 seed.

A sluggish offense isn’t playing up to its standard. Saquon Barkley ran for only 22 yards on 10 carries, and the passing attack just hasn’t found its rhythm.

    Rams dominate

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were no match for Matthew Stafford and the Rams.

Stafford continued his MVP-caliber campaign with another stellar performance against an overmatched defense and Los Angeles cruised to a 34-7 victory over Tampa Bay.

The 37-year-old Stafford has thrown 30 touchdown passes and only two interceptions this season.

“I got great teammates. I get to throw to a bunch of great players, stand behind a good o-line and watch these guys hunt on defense,” Stafford said.

That defense overwhelmed the Buccaneers, knocking Baker Mayfield out of the game.

Jared Verse and Kobie Turner each had two sacks and Los Angeles is the team to beat in the NFC.

    First to 10

Drake Maye and the New England Patriots are the first team to reach 10 wins this season after holding on for a 26-20 victory in Cincinnati.

The Patriots have a 2 1/2-game lead over Buffalo (7-4) in the AFC East with eight of their wins coming against teams that have a losing record.

With three of their last five games against teams that are currently 8-26 combined, New England is in position to win its first division title since Tom Brady left and has an inside track to earning the No. 1 seed in the AFC.

But the Patriots still have a lot to prove, especially against more experienced playoff teams.

  • Carson Wentz’s Rise and Fall – Philadelphia Sports Nation

    EaglesUnique ColumnsWegENT Blog

Carson Wentz arrived in Philadelphia with big expectations, giving the Eagles fans hope.

Unfortunately, then came the injuries and setbacks that stole the momentum.

It’s a story that feels more human than headline-glamour, and Philly still has mixed feelings.

    The Promising Rise

Drafted as the second overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, Wentz showed promise. But it was in 2017 that things really kicked into gear, and by the time he got hurt near season’s end, he’d thrown for 3,296 yards with 33 touchdowns and only 7 interceptions in just 13 games. His passer rating was 101.9 in that stretch. He also rushed for 299 yards that season.

    Credit: NFL Network-Facebook

That stretch had everyone talking. He had the kind of spark that made fans believe he could be special. And when you look at what defines the greats, like steady leadership and the ability to make a team feel, it’s easy to see why some thought Wentz might join top NFL quarterbacks of all time. For a brief stretch, he looked like he was heading straight there.

    …And Then The Fall

One play in Los Angeles changed everything. An awkward step, an ACL tear, and suddenly his season was done. Nick Foles took over. They won the Super Bowl, and Wentz had to watch the celebration from the sideline.

Injuries have followed him ever since. Back, knee, head. All at different times. He played only 11 games in 2018, and the numbers were fine, but the rhythm was gone, as was the explosiveness.

In 2019, he posted more than 4,000 yards and 27 touchdowns, but still, it simply wasn’t the same as he was pressing. By 2020, the confidence had cracked. The throws that once looked automatic were suddenly forced or late.

He bounced from Philadelphia to Indianapolis to Washington. Each stop brought the same story: flashes of talent, followed by inconsistency.

NFL executives started using a brutal word – “broken.”

They said he looked fine in practice, but when the games started, everything had to be perfect around him. If it wasn’t, his mechanics unraveled. He’d freeze up, double-clutch, miss the open read. He wasn’t the same athlete anymore, either, with the pocket becoming a cage.

    The Verdict

By late 2023, the league had made up its mind, and analysts compared his situation to Sam Bradford, who was talented, got paid well, but was out of the league before 35.

And yet, people who’ve worked with him still like him. They describe him as earnest, coachable, and even kind. He tried to fix things, tried to make it work. But sometimes, football doesn’t give you another shot.

    Why It Unraveled

The physical damage was part of it. But the mental toll might’ve been worse. Wentz never seemed to fully trust his body again. That led to hesitation. Hesitation led to mistakes. And mistakes, in the NFL, cost you your job.

The Eagles moved on. The Colts moved on. Washington did too.

More recently (2025), he signed with the Minnesota Vikings, seeing action after younger QBs were injured and revealing that he’s now more of a stopgap option than a long-term franchise leader.

Why Philly Fans Still Feel Something

If you’re a Philadelphia fan, you saw Wentz do something rare. He gave hope and made big throws. He helped the team earn an 11-2 record in games he started in that 2017 run, then got hurt, and the team won the Super Bowl with the backup. A lot of complicated feelings: gratitude, frustration… and sadness for what might have been.

The human side matters. Wentz wasn’t perfect; he made bad throws and had games where he struggled. But he also overcame injuries, came back, and tried to lead. Loved his team. The “could’ve-been” element resonates.

Ideally, What Could He Have Been?

Had Wentz stayed healthy, kept improving, and maybe adapted his game, he might have joined the ranks of the top-tier quarterbacks – those are QBs who remain elite 8-10 years, evolve when defenses evolve, maintain leadership.

The missing piece in Wentz’s story is the “sustained” part. One season isn’t enough. Injuries interrupted the rhythm. Changes in team staff, receivers, and the offensive line all added turbulence.

    The Takeaway

So here’s what I came away with: Wentz achieved a level that gave hope. But he didn’t stay there. That doesn’t mean he failed. He still had a good career, made plays, and was a starting QB for many years. But he didn’t reach the “special” level that the very best QBs show.

And for Philly fans, it’s okay to feel both pride and disappointment. He gave you the thrill of imagining a franchise quarterback. You bought into that. Then reality hit. And life moved on.

In a world where so many QBs never even get close to what Wentz did in 2017, his story is one of both promise and caution. A reminder that in the NFL, being very good isn’t enough if you want to be legendary. Being durable, being consistent, being the guy on the late-night drives in January, that’s where the legends live. Wentz almost got there. He had that moment. But he didn’t live there.

And maybe that’s okay. Because sometimes the most human quarterback stories aren’t about records or Hall-of-Fame résumés. They’re about the rise, the fall, the “what if,” and how fans remember it.

Wentz gave Philadelphia something to believe in. For a while, that was enough.

  • Colts targeting two-time Super Bowl champion defender

The Indianapolis Colts are one of the best teams in the NFL, and sitting at a 6-1 record, they are the favorite to win the AFC crown right now. With a high-powered offense, the team is looking to bolster their defense, which could include a two-time Super Bowl champion.

More news: Vikings’ Kirk Cousins Trade Rumors Heat Up Following JJ McCarthy News

Per multiple reports, the Colts took in a few pass rushers for a workout in an effort to bolster their defense, and one of the players that worked out is former Tampa Bay Buccaneers star linebacker Shaq Barrett.

    Loading twitter content…

Barrett began his career with the Denver Broncos, playing with the team from 2014 to 2018 seasons where he won his first Super Bowl title. He would join Tampa Bay, where he secured his second Super Bowl title, his two Pro Bowl nods, and his lone All-Pro selection.

More news: Dolphins Owner Reportedly Rejected $10 Billion Offer to Sell the Team

Through a little over 10 seasons in the NFL, Barrett secured 59 sacks, including a league-leading 19.5 in the 2019 season.

Following his three seasons with the Buccaneers, Barrett signed a contract with the Miami Dolphins in 2024. Before the regular season could begin, he shockingly chose to retire.

Barrett ended his retirement in November 2024, but the Dolphins would not allow him back on the team, and they chose instead to waive him. He would sign with the Buccaneers in December of the same year, appearing in only one game.

Barrett may have had a tumultuous 2024 season with the retirement and return with the Buccaneers, but he is still a viable pass rusher. The Colts may sign him for a minimum deal to help bolster an important aspect of their defense.

  • Chargers Host Colts in Week 7 AFC Showdown at SoFi

The Chargers defend home turf against a booming Indianapolis Colts offense

Roughly a quarter of the way into the season, the Chargers are clearly one of the most banged-up and bruised teams in the league. Numerous injuries to offensive and defensive pieces have definitely slowed down the early-season momentum that put the rest of the league on notice, though Herbert and co. still have plenty of fight left in them, and will do anything to come out on top, as we saw last week in the 29-27 win against the Miami Dolphins.

This week, the Bolts will see a visiting 5-1 Indianapolis Colts squad at SoFi Stadium, a team that has continued to dominate in their own right, boasting a fantastic spread offense featuring the newly revitalized QB Daniel Jones, the explosive RB Jonathan Taylor, and the emerging rookie TE, Tyler Warren.

But they are not without plenty of injuries of their own. Currently, on the Colts’ injury report are a plethora of core pieces that could be sidelined for Sunday’s match. These injuries include CB Kenny Moore II (questionable, Achilles), RB Tyler Goodson (questionable, groin), CB Charvarius Ward (out, concussion), WR Josh Downs (out, concussion), and CB Mike Hilton (out, shoulder).

With such a weakened secondary against the Chargers, Herbert should be able to get the chemistry rolling with the pass game, especially with one of the best trios of receivers in the league in Keenan Allen, Ladd McConkey, and Quentin Johnston.

The Chargers’ run game is where things get a bit shaky, since rookie RB Omarion Hampton will continue to sit out of the action. In the meantime, back-up RB Kimani Vidal has done a great job in his place, and is expected to orchestrate the run-heavy offense once more.

Aside from Hampton sitting out, the Chargers injury report includes G Jamaree Salyer (questionable, knee), OT Joe Alt (doubtful, ankle), G Trey Pipkins III (out, knee), RB Hassan Haskins (questionable, chest), CB Elijah Molden ((doubtful, thumb), WR Derius Davis (questionable, knee), LB Troy Dye (questionable, thumb), LB Khalil Mack (injury reserve, elbow), and LB Denzel Perryman (injury reserve, ankle). It will be yet another uphill battle demanding the very best efforts from the next man up.

Both teams are potentially missing secondary pieces, plus two strong-armed QBs in spread offenses, which equals a promising recipe for an extremely fun shootout. We should see a high-scoring game with back-and-forth big-time plays, and as a football fan, nothing could be more exciting to watch.

Both teams currently sit in the top spots in their respective divisions, and certainly plan to continue doing so. Will the Chargers improve to 5-2? Find out this Sunday at a matinee showing.

  • New Judge Reverses Ban, Cameras Allowed in Sanchez Trial

Previous Judge Jennifer P. Harrison denied the media request for cameras

Judge James B. Osborn approved a media request allowing cameras in the courtroom, which came as a welcome surprise to many. While Indiana has generally restricted camera access in courtrooms, they do allow for judicial discretion. It does remains unclear whether Mark Sanchez will be required to attend any hearings before his jury trial.

The Mark Sanchez battery case is currently set to go to trial on December 11, 2025 — for now. Insiders note that the Marion County, Indiana, court is extremely busy, with a packed docket that can make scheduling a challenge. The Sanchez docket lists at least three preliminary hearings, though it remains unclear whether Sanchez will attend any of them. The October 22 hearing is marked as “attorneys only,” while the December 2 hearing is noted as “remote — attorneys only.” Judge James B. Osborn also approved a media request for cameras in the courtroom on October 16- a move that’s considered rare in Indiana.

The former NFL quarterback and Fox Sports announcer was involved in an altercation in downtown Indianapolis, where he was allegedly the aggressor and sustained serious injuries. Perry Tole, a 69-year-old truck driver and hotel worker, claimed self-defense after stabbing Sanchez. Sanchez was charged with felony battery resulting in bodily injury, along with several misdemeanor offenses.

Judge James B. Osborn was recently assigned to the Sanchez case after Judge Jennifer Prinz Harrison recused herself on October 14 for reasons that remain unknown. Insiders say that even Sanchez and his legal team are unsure why Harrison transferred the case.  Prinz Harrison has recently faced intense scrutiny for being “soft on crime.” The Indiana judge faced harsh criticism after sentencing Luis Leyba-Gonzalez in October 2025, who was involved in a high-speed crash that killed three people (while fleeing police) at 140 MPH, to only two years in prison. His victims included his own cousin and brother, as well as a 21-year-old woman who had been married for only 10 days.

Prosecutors initially sought 25 years in prison for his actions (later requesting 15 years). Instead, Judge Jennifer Prinz Harrison sentenced him to two years in prison plus seven years of home detention on counts including resisting law enforcement resulting in death.

Meanwhile, Judge James B. Osborn, received a “Recommended” rating from 95.5% of respondents in the 2014 judicial election cycle, according to the Indianapolis Bar Association survey. Both Judge Harrison and Judge Osborn, along with victim Perry Tole attorney Erik May and Sanchez’s attorney James Voyles, attended law school at IU McKinney. The next hearing in the Mark Sanchez criminal case is October 22nd.

  • NFL punishes Raiders player who badly injured Colts kicker

The Las Vegas Raiders got blown out by the Indianapolis Colts 40-6 in Week 5.

And while the Colts had plenty of reason to celebrate after the game, those celebrations were soured by a terrible moment on the field.

Colts kicker Spencer Shrader suffered season-ending ACL and MCL injuries during the game after Raiders safety Tristin McCollum hit his kicking leg on an extra point. Following the incident, the refs flagged McCollum for roughing the kicker, and now, he’s paying the price.

Every week during the regular NFL season, the league penalizes players for their actions deemed a violation of the league rules. The NFL notes on their website that these actions are “to protect players from unnecessary risk and preserve competitive balance and game integrity, the NFL and NFL Players Association have agreed on a set of game-related rules violations that may result in accountability measures.”

In the NFL’s report for Week 5, McCollum was hit with a $5,722 fine for unnecessary roughness (roughing the kicker). But considering that the injury ended Shrader’s season and severely affected his kicking leg, was a fine enough? At least one NFL personality is questioning the amount of the punishment.

“That seems like a fairly meager fine considering the seriousness of the offense, a clear personal foul, and the season-ending consequences to Shrader,” notes Michael David Smith of NBC’s Pro Football Sports. “NFL players are routinely fined more than that for celebrations.”

The fine, according to the NFL, will go to the Professional Athletes Foundation to “support legends in need and the NFL Foundation to further support the health, safety and wellness of athletes across all levels, including youth football and the communities that support the game.”

Also from that game, Colts linebacker Joe Bachie was hit with a $6,500 fine for unnecessary roughness (striking/kicking/tripping/kneeing). The fine was for tripping Raiders running back Ashton Jeanty in the second quarter of the game.

  • Colts’ Adonai Mitchell suffers bizarre fumble near end zone in loss against Rams

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Adonai Mitchell committed an inexplicable turnover early in the second half in their loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday evening.

Colts quarterback Daniel Jones found Mitchell one-on-one with a Rams defender. He made a nice two-handed grab, spun off his defender and sprinted toward the end zone. The Colts, and everyone else in SoFi Stadium, thought he had a touchdown.

However, he bobbled the football, and it bounced off his hands and into the back of the end zone. Officials ruled it a fumble and an easy six points were taken off the board. It would have been a 76-yard touchdown catch for Mitchell if not for the fumble.

Mitchell led the team with three catches for 96 yards. Jones connected with Michael Pittman Jr. for a touchdown. Jones was 24-of-33 with 262 passing yards and two interceptions.

The Rams took the lead late when Matthew Stafford connected with Tutu Atwell for an 88-yard touchdown pass with 1:13 left in the game. It put Los Angeles up 27-20 at that point and the Rams would never relinquish the lead again.

Stafford had 375 passing yards and three touchdown passes in the win. He threw touchdown passes to Atwell, Puka Nacua and Davante Adams. Nacua led the team with 13 catches for 170 yards and a touchdown. Adams had four catches for 56 yards and a score.

  • Houston Texans Try to Extend WIldest Streak in Team Sports on Sunday

The Houston Texans are traveling to Jacksonville this weekend to face the Jaguars in what is essentially an early season “must win” for our hometown team. The Texans are 0-2 to start the season, and one really awful way to sustain the misery would be losing a divisional game to the lowly Jags. The playoff probabilities are bad enough for 0-2 teams. 0-3 teams are almost banished from the playoffs.

Beyond watching their playoff probabilities dwindle to next to nothing with a loss  Sunday, losing to the Jags would also end one of the most remarkable streaks in team sports — the Texans’ current 11 game road winning streak inside the division. The ledger of games that are part of this streak is as follows:

(Texans record at the time of the game in the first parentheses. Betting line and Texans money line in the second parentheses.)

    2021, Week 11 (2-7) – Texans 22, Titans 13 (LINE +10, +350)
    2021, Week 15 (3-10) – Texans 30, Jaguars 16 (LINE +6, +210)
    2022, Week 5 (0-3-1) – Texans 13, Jaguars 6 (LINE +7, +250)
    2022, Week 16 (1-12-1) – Texans 19, Titans 14 (LINE +3, +135)
    2022, Week 18 (2-13-1) – Texans 32, Colts 31 (LINE +2.5, +120)
    2023, Week 3 (0-2) – Texans 37, Jaguars 17 (LINE +9.5, +325)
    2023, Week 15 (7-6) – Texans 19, Titans 16 (LINE +3, +135)
    2023, Week 18 (9-7) – Texans 23, Colts 19 (LINE -1.5, -130)
    2024, Week 1 (0-0) – Texans 29, Colts 27 (LINE -2.5, -140)
    2024, Week 13 (7-5) – Texans 23, Jaguars 20 (LINE -3.5, -190)
    2024, Week 18 (9-7) – Texans 23, Titans 14 (LINE: +1.5, +105)

A few thoughts on this wild multi year accomplishment by the Texans:

This streak includes some of the worst versions of the Texans ever
Divisional games in the NFL are truly the only matchups where the records of the teams don’t matter. Division foes hate each other. Throw the records out the window, as they say, So an 11 game winning streak inside the division is a major feat for a team that is actually GOOD over that period of time! This Texans streak, though, includes two games coached by David Culley and three games coached by Lovie Smith. Oddly enough, the three games coached by Lovie Smith are the only three wins of his Texans head coaching career.

The most iconic win of the streak was…..
There are a few good candidates. In 2022, the Week 18 win over the Colts pushed the Texans down to the second pick in the draft, which netted them C.J. Stroud. In 2023, DeMeco Ryans’ first win as Texans head coach was in Jacksonville in Week 3, while the win over the Colts in Week 18 won them the division. However, my vote for most iconic win during this streak was also in 2023, the Week 15 win over the Titans, with Case Keenum at quarterback. Ka’imi Fairbairn’s last second field goal spoiled Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk’s little “Oiler uniform” cosplay party. THAT was the best!

$100 parlay on these games would have paid….
I know the enterprising part of you wants to know just how much money you could have made by betting on all of these improbable outcomes. After all, the Texans were only favored  in two of these contests. Well, thankfully you’ve got me here to do the math (or find a website to do it for us). So, here you go — if you had bet on all of these games and just kept rolling over your winnings on each game, an original bet of $100 would have turned into $2,392,421 by now.

For the record, the money line on the Texans this Sunday is +130, so prepare to turn $2,392,421 into $5,502,568. Go Texans!

  • Daniel Jones Reminds Colts GM of This Former Chiefs Quarterback

The Indianapolis Colts entered the preseason with an intriguing quarterback battle between Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones.

Both players were top-10 picks, and Jones’ time with the New York Giants didn’t live up to the hype, especially after he signed a four-year deal worth $160 million.

Richardson’s first two seasons with the Colts have been marred by injuries and inconsistent play, but the Colts decided to run with Jones as the QB1 to start the season.

On Wednesday, Colts general manager Chris Ballard spoke about the Jones-Richardson duo, and he even compared Jones to former Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers QB Alex Smith, who he worked with during his time in KC as director of player personnel and then director of football operations.

More Football: Chiefs Bring Back 2-Time Super Bowl Champion

“[He] reminds me a lot of Alex Smith that we had in Kansas City, who I thought was just the ultimate professional day in and day out,” Ballard said, via Nick Shook of NFL.com.

“The team knew exactly what they were getting. I feel that’s kind of the same thing with Daniel. So, I know the story’s always been about Anthony, but also let’s don’t lose sight of Daniel. (He) did some good things, and he’s been a really good professional. He’s been through a lot.”

Smith was the first overall pick in the 2005 NFL draft and had a successful career before retiring in the 2021 offseason. Smith made the Pro Bowl three times and started 167 regular-season games between the Chiefs, Redskins (now Commanders) and 49ers.

After naming Jones as the starting QB, head coach Shane Steichen said they are excited for what he brings to the table.

“I think the guys have taken to him. He’s a great communicator with the guys. You can see that veteran presence out there. So, I’m excited for that,” Steichen said, via Stephen Holder of ESPN.

Jones appeared in 70 regular-season games for the Giants, throwing for 14,582 yards with 70 touchdowns and 47 interceptions before being let go.

More NFL: Colts GM Makes Decisive Anthony Richardson Statement Amid Trade Rumors

After his release, he joined the Minnesota Vikings but didn’t play in any games. The Colts signed him to a one-year, $14 million deal in the offseason.

While Richardson waits in the background, it doesn’t appear Jones will have a short leash, either.

“He’s our starting quarterback for the season. I don’t want to have a quick leash on that. I feel confident in his abilities,” Steichen said, via Holder.

The Colts begin the season at home against the Miami Dolphins before taking on the Denver Broncos, and it will be worth watching to see if Jones can get back on track and benefit from the change of scenery.

  • Sam Darnold, Vikings snap 2-game losing streak with win over the Colts 21-13

Sam Darnold, Vikings snap 2-game losing streak with win over the Colts 21-13

MINNEAPOLIS — Sam Darnold overcame four sacks and three turnovers by throwing three second-half touchdown passes, and the Minnesota defense made Indianapolis quarterback Joe Flacco’s return to the starting role a rough one as the Vikings beat the Colts 21-13 on Sunday night.

Justin Jefferson had 137 receiving yards, Jordan Addison made a one-handed diving grab in the back corner of the end zone to get Minnesota on the board after a sloppy and scoreless first half, and Jalen Nailor had the tiebreaking touchdown reception to help the Vikings (6-2) stop a two-game skid.

Kenny Moore II had a 38-yard fumble return in the second quarter, the only touchdown for the Colts (4-5) in their first game all season that wasn’t decided by six points or fewer.

Flacco replaced Anthony Richardson, with the 2023 fourth overall NFL draft pick struggling badly and becoming the self-created subject of a week of hot takes after taking himself out for a play last week because he was tired.

The AP NFL Comeback Player of the Year award winner with Cleveland last season after he came off his couch past midseason to help the Browns make the playoffs, Flacco went 16 for 27 for 179 yards and one interception.

He moved the Colts to the Minnesota 40 midway through the fourth quarter facing a 14-10 deficit, but Harrison Smith, who recovered an opening-drive fumble by Jonathan Taylor, broke up consecutive passes to force a turnover on downs.

Darnold, who finished 28 for 34 for 290 yards, hit Josh Oliver for the game-sealing score with 2:05 left.

The Vikings set an NFL record two years ago by rallying from a 33-0 halftime deficit to beat the Colts 39-36 in overtime, and their first half was eerily similar to that game. The convenient difference was they only trailed by a touchdown, after limiting the Colts to 92 yards on 20 plays.

    Indianapolis Colts v Minnesota Vikings

Will Reichard, who started his rookie season by making his first 34 kicks, became the last regular in the league to miss by pulling a 53-yard field goal try wide right. Then his 31-yarder bounced off the right upright.

Darnold spoiled a promising first possession for the Vikings with an on-the-run, across-his-body throw to T.J. Hockenson in double coverage that was intercepted in the end zone by Zaire Franklin.

After Byron Murphy picked off Flacco in the fourth quarter, Darnold gave it right back when Nick Cross undercut an overeager throw to Jefferson.

The Vikings welcomed Hockenson back from the knee injury that ended his 2023 season prematurely, and Darnold wasted no time looking for his long-haired and limber-bodied tight end. Hockenson’s third-down catch that would’ve moved the chains was erased by a holding penalty on left tackle Cam Robinson, who was hastily acquired this week after a season-ending knee injury to standout Christian Darrisaw.

The Colts have a dangerous defensive line, no matter who’s blocking, and their pressure up the middle was a problem for Darnold. Grover Stewart steamrolled center Garrett Bradbury on a dropback near midfield and dislodged the ball as he slammed Darnold to the turf for Moore to scoop up for the score.

Stewart, whose forearm grazed Darnold’s facemask with so much force that it knocked him down, was initially flagged for the hit. The penalty was waved off.

Colts: LT Bernhard Raimann (concussion) was held out and replaced by rookie Matt Goncalves.

Vikings: LB Blake Cashman (toe) was sidelined for the third straight game.

    Colts: Host Buffalo next Sunday.

    Vikings: Visit Jacksonville next Sunday.

  • Vikings’ defense is suddenly vulnerable after losses to savvy, strong-armed QBs

Vikings’ defense is suddenly vulnerable after losses to savvy, strong-armed QBs

The defense that fueled Minnesota’s 5-0 start with a disruptive pass rush and a swarm of tacklers to stop the run has had a rough week, humbled by a couple of code-cracking quarterbacks and their savvy play-callers.

Four days after the Vikings took their first loss of the season at the hands of Detroit’s high-octane offense, they were beaten again at Los Angeles by another potent group following a similar blueprint.

Just like Jared Goff did for the Lions in their 31-29 victory on Sunday, the Vikings had their zone pass coverage picked apart by the Rams’ Matthew Stafford in LA’s 30-20 win on Thursday night. Goff and Stafford combined to go 47 for 59 for 559 yards and six touchdowns, and the one turnover the Vikings forced in each game wasn’t enough to slow down the opposition.

There’s no shame in giving up throws to players like Goff and Stafford. The Lions are thriving behind the direction of offensive coordinator Ben Johnson with one of the most balanced lineups in the game, ranking second in the NFL in yards per game and third in points. The Rams, inconveniently for the Vikings, welcomed standout wide receivers Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua back from injuries and quickly hit their stride in a commanding fashion reminiscent of their Super Bowl champion team of three years ago.

Against the Lions, the Vikings sacked Goff four times with some effective pressure early and late, but he was largely untouched and in rhythm in the middle quarters. They simply never got to Stafford, turning in their first sack-less performance while only registering two hits. One of the most wince-inducing plays came in the second quarter, when Jonathan Greenard used a spin move to get into the backfield and force Stafford to slide up in the pocket. As Harrison Phillips approached in prime position to finish the sack, Stafford ducked under his arms and fired a touchdown pass to Kupp.

With linebacker Blake Cashman sidelined for the second straight game with a turf toe injury, the Vikings were far less effective against the run. The variety of blitzes and disguises designed to make offenses think pressure is coming that defensive coordinator Brian Flores has successfully employed this year didn’t create much trouble for Goff. There was even less disruption for Stafford. Rams coach Sean McVay also called several screen passes to bank on the speed of his receivers and get the ball out of Stafford’s hand as quickly as possible.

“We’ve been dealing with teams that kind of hit us in those same areas, take advantage of that. We’re seeing more screens. We’re seeing more run attacks. They’re trying to get us to tackle, setting up plays so they can ditch-and-dump here and there,” Vikings cornerback Shaquill Griffin said. “I don’t think this will be the last time we’re going to see this, so there’s a lot we’ve got to fix.”

Alignment and communication were also persistent problems on Thursday. Cashman’s absence surely didn’t help.

“I think everybody’s still in high spirits,” Griffin said, “but no one likes this feeling.”

Even worse than the experience of consecutive defeats: Losing star left tackle Christian Darrisaw for the rest of the season. Darrisaw suffered torn ligaments in his left knee, coach Kevin O’Connell said Friday.

The Vikings could hardly have envisioned a better start to the season by quarterback Sam Darnold. He posted a season-best 128.7 passer rating against the Rams and ranks fifth in the league in that category.

The Vikings have been sabotaging their offense with wholly preventable penalties before the snap. They were flagged for two false starts and two illegal formations against the Rams after being whistled for one false start, two illegal formations and the rare offensive offside penalty against the Lions.

Ryan Wright averaged 50.3 yards on three punts, landing each one inside the 20-yard line, with a long of 61 yards.

Jalen Nailor dropped a short pass early in the fourth quarter that would’ve given the Vikings a first down. He had the angle to get in the end zone for what would’ve been the go-ahead touchdown, but the Vikings had to settle for a field goal. Nailor scored in each of the first three games but has been quiet since.

The loss of Darrisaw will be awfully difficult to overcome, but the Vikings will have TE T.J. Hockenson back from injury next week. Cashman is on track to return, too.

The Vikings have lost nine consecutive night games against teams from the West divisions, a streak of time-zone trouble that has developed since their last such win at Oakland in 1996. The prime-time skid includes four losses to Seattle, two to Arizona, two to the Rams and one to San Francisco.

The Vikings host the Indianapolis Colts on Nov. 3, a game that NBC grabbed for the prime-time slot under the league’s flexible scheduling policy. After that, the Vikings have three straight games on the road: at Jacksonville, Tennessee and Chicago.

  • QB Love can’t dig the Packers all the way out of an early hole in his return from a knee injury

QB Love can’t dig the Packers all the way out of an early hole in his return from a knee injury

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Jordan Love arrived at Lambeau Field wearing a Brett Favre Packers jersey.

Then he went out and produced the kind of performance that Favre once made a habit of delivering at home.

Love went 32 of 54 for 389 yards and nearly helped Green Bay come all the way back from a 28-point deficit Sunday in his return after missing two games with an injured left medial collateral ligament.

But he also was picked off three times in Green Bay’s 31-29 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Love ended up setting career highs in completions, yards passing, touchdown passes and interceptions.

“I think ball placement was a little all over the place today, kind of throughout the whole game,” Love said. “I think it picked up later, but yeah, I think early on I just missed a couple throws and was a little bit off and made it hard on some of the receivers on some of those plays.”

Love acknowledged after the game the knee continued to bother him at times.

“I hope it’ll continue to heal and get better, but at this moment, yeah, it’s definitely something that’s there,” Love said. “It’s one of those things. It’s football. We play a physical sport and there’s injuries and you got to fight through some stuff.”

Love hadn’t played since getting injured in the final series of the Packers’ 34-29 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 6 in Brazil. Malik Willis filled in for Love the past two weeks and led Green Bay to victories over the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans as the Packers used a more run-oriented approach.

The rust was apparent early on as Green Bay fell way behind early, forcing Love to throw time and time again.

Love went 10 of 22 for 101 yards with two interceptions over the first 29-plus minutes of the game as the Packers fell behind 28-0. Each of the two interceptions led to Minnesota touchdowns.

Green Bay (2-2) finally got on the scoreboard in the final minute of the first half when a fumbled punt by the Vikings (4-0) led to Love’s 15-yard touchdown pass to Jayden Reed.

And in the fourth quarter, Love finally started to showcase the ability late last season while leading the Packers on a surprising playoff run.

“We knew he was out for a couple weeks, so we were going to put some pressure on him,” said Shaq Griffin, who had one of the Vikings’ three interceptions. “He also did a good job just kind of figuring it around the kind of defense that we were in. A lot of quarterbacks haven’t done that yet, so he did. I definitely tip my hat off to him.”

In that final quarter, Love went 13 of 17 for 202 yards with three touchdown passes and one interception.

After the Packers stopped Minnesota’s Jalen Nailor for no gain on fourth-and-1 from the Green Bay 4 with less than 2 1/2 minutes left, Love led a five-play, 96-yard drive. His 17-yard touchdown pass to Dontayvion Wicks cut Minnesota’s lead to 31-29 with 56 seconds left before the Vikings could seal the victory.

That fourth-quarter effort exemplified why the Packers believe he can eventually lead them to a title.

“Jordan is Jordan, man,” Reed said. “He’s ‘him,’ in my opinion. I’ve never had a different opinion.”

Love’s teammates remember how he threw 21 touchdown passes with only one interception during a nine-game stretch last season that culminated with a 48-32 upset of the Dallas Cowboys in a wild-card playoff game. The Packers showed their faith in him by signing Love to a four-year, $220 million contract extension last summer.

“I think he’s a hell of a competitor,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said. “We’ve got a lot of trust, belief and faith in him, and I love how he battles. That’s one of the things that you absolutely love about him is his composure. He’s never too high, never too low and he keeps competing and he keeps battling. I’m super-proud of his effort.”

Even after Love’s big fourth quarter, the Packers still fell short. They’re already two games behind the surprising Vikings in the NFC North.

Now that the Packers are facing some early adversity again, Love can draw upon last season’s run for confidence as his knee gradually gets better.

“We started off in a hole last year as well, so it’s one of those things, we’re going to come back next week, keep working, learn, watch the tape, grow from this game and we’ll see these guys again later on the year,” Love said. “So just learn from it, keep going. But it’s definitely a long season, and I definitely like where we’re at as a team. You know, we didn’t make plays, but (with) the playmakers we have and team we have, I definitely like where we’re at.”
