    Epidural, Please: ‘The Bear’ Zooms In on Trauma in “Ice Chips”

    It’s been a year nearly to the day since we learned that Natalie Berzatto was pregnant, but you could be forgiven for thinking it’s been even longer. Since that reveal during The Bear’s second season, Sugar, as she’s better known, has endured fatigue, insomnia, and something called “lightning crotch.” She has also managed to keep her mercurial chef brother and the band of merry misfits who made up the kitchen at the Berzatto family’s sandwich shop together through that restaurant’s reinvention as a fine-dining Michelin-star aspirant—all while going through a pregnancy that has endured as long as a giraffe’s.

    The Bear’s third season, which was released in full last week, is by far the series’ weakest, bogged down by an overreliance on flashbacks and flimsy character development. Still, there were bright spots that felt like vintage entries from the Emmy-bedecked show’s history.

    “Ice Chips,” the eighth of the latest season’s 10 episodes, might just be the strongest of the bunch. It features Sugar, played by Abby Elliott, who goes into labor at long last while out buying supplies for the restaurant on her own. She gets stuck in traffic on the highway as she tries and fails to contact her husband, Pete, her brother Carmy, and even Carmy’s manic pixie dream ex-girlfriend, Claire (whose twee contributions this season include her confession that—gasp—she likes Mondays). In desperation, Sugar calls her mom, Donna, heralding the return of Jamie Lee Curtis as the erratic Berzatto matriarch.

    We first saw Donna in Season 2’s celebrated episode “Fishes,” during which a drunken holiday dinner with extended family devolved into shouting matches, sobbing, and, finally, a hysterical Donna crashing her car into the Berzattos’ living room. Donna, we learn, is the source of much of the baggage that her three children carried into adulthood, and Sugar has responded by largely cutting her out of her life: In Season 2, we learned many months into Sugar’s pregnancy that she hadn’t even told her mother that she was expecting.

    All of which makes her an unlikely choice for a birth partner, and she roars into “Ice Chips” with guns blazing. She meets Sugar in the hospital parking lot, immediately letting loose a frenzy of pet names and rat-a-tat instructions—“You must breathe!” she exhorts her daughter over and over, miming a breath pattern that is more hyperventilation than soothsaying—and within seconds, an already stressed-out Sugar is desperately begging her to stop talking. Which, of course, she doesn’t.

    With Pete located but still en route to the hospital, the bulk of “Ice Chips” is spent with Sugar and Donna alone in the delivery room. Between their sparring, Sugar’s shrieks of pain, and the time-is-ticking feel of the rush to the hospital and a delivery that is decidedly not going to plan, the episode packs every bit of the punch of the best of The Bear’s fast-paced, high-stress chapters, from online ordering gone wild in Season 1 to a busted freezer door in Season 2. Like all those scenes with big personalities that clash in a tiny kitchen, here we have the same in a different sort of prep room. Every second counts, or at least every centimeter of dilation.

    Sugar alone seems to have made it through the familial fractiousness on display in “Fishes” in one piece. She doesn’t share either of her brothers’ self-destructive tendencies, for example, and is the only one of the siblings to hold down a stable romantic relationship. Aside from her impending diaper expertise, she’s just about the only character on the show you could imagine asking to babysit a kid with the expectation that the child will return with the same number of fingers and toes.

    But as Elliott finally gets some screen time without Jeremy Allen White’s Carmy, Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s Richie, and Ayo Edebiri’s Sydney chewing up all the scenery, we get some much-deserved time with a character who, as the perpetual straight man, is usually resigned to letting the others do their thing. “Ice Chips” establishes that the fact that Sugar has her shit together is its own response to a difficult childhood: She began her errand by playing a self-help program for children of alcoholics, which she had seemingly already memorized. Over the course of the episode, Sugar levels with Donna about her role in the still-reverberating chaos of the Berzatto kids’ upbringing. “You scared all of us,” she tells Donna. “Oh, that’s terrible,” Donna replies; Curtis’s face crumples as she seems to, finally, reckon with how much damage she caused.

    That same old Donna is still in there, and Curtis’s fussy, frantic performance is enough to make anyone who’s ever said, “Mom, stop” squirm. When Sugar announces her birth plan to a nurse—no epidural, thanks!—Donna laughs in her face. “I’m just telling you as someone who’s been around the block,” she tells her daughter, “this particular block hurts like a motherfucking son of a bitch.” A few contractions later, Sugar has changed her tune on the subject of pain relief. Donna isn’t always—or even usually—a source of well-founded wisdom, but here, at least, she gets it right.

    Childbirth sequences in TV and film tend to hew to a few basic conventions: the dramatic water breaking, the howling pain en route to the hospital, and—always—the smash cut to the finish line, with the new parents cleaned up and beaming at their little bundle of joy. It feels right that a show like The Bear, with its almost religious dedication to the avoidance of happy endings, refuses to tie the episode up with a bow. We never see the baby or the new mom; the only confirmation that the little girl has arrived safely is delivered when Ted Fak teases Donna in the hospital waiting room in the episode’s closing moments that she’s a grandma now. Indeed, we don’t even learn whether Sugar got that epidural.

    Given it’s The Bear, we can probably assume she didn’t.

    Cebu blazed a path for Filipino cuisine in Chicago when the family-owned restaurant debuted five years ago in Bucktown. Michelin had yet to recognize a Filipino restaurant with a star. Ube had yet to enter the mainstream. Now it’s impossible to avoid the purple hue while scrolling through Instagram and TikTok food pages.

    The Tans closed their Bucktown restaurant in December and a suburban bakery. But they’re back with a new restaurant in Lakeview, a consolidation of their previous operations. The new Cebu opened on Thursday, June 27 at 3120 N. Lincoln Avenue with a display case full of cookies, pan de sal stuffed with corned beef, or ube and cheesecake. Ownership wants to give customers plenty of to-go options — a breakfast burrito with tocino and garlic rice is a compact example.

    They’re open for breakfast and lunch to start and see themselves as a great place for folks who want brunch on weekdays and don’t want to wait for Saturday and Sunday. Silog, pandan pancakes, ube waffles with friend chicken, and a tres leches French toast stand out. An Iberico pork steak with a tocino marinade might make the brunch menu.

    Marlon Tan describes the menu as modern Filipino, which allows for various influences including Mexican. Adobo chicken chiliquiles are a highlight. Brother Malvin Tan is in charge of the dinner menu, and he and another sibling — Martin — are in charge of the pastry.

    The Tans have experience in fine dining, but the future of the restaurant will depend on the neighborhood and demand. Dinner service should start in about a month. The Tans won’t rule out putting out Filipino spaghetti in the future.

    There are various morning options that can be taken to-go.

    The Tans would also like to expand cocktail service. They’re not permitted to set up a traditional bar with stools due to neighborhood zoning restrictions. The new Cebu is brighter, there’s a full espresso bar. Tan says he hopes to collaborate with Mano Modern Cafe, a Flipino restaurant in West Town, on coffee.

    There are more Filipino restaurants in Chicago than ever before, but it’s important to understand that people and food existed before any alleged boom. Having more peers is nice, but beyond customers knowing of the cuisine beyond lumpia, not much has changed.

    “We’ve always been like looking at other restaurants and seeing what they’re doing and seeing — ‘oh, maybe we could try that,” Malvin Tan explains.

    Cebu will be open all seven days next week over the Independence Day holiday before regular business hours will start.

    Cebu, 3120 N. Lincoln Avenue, open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Starting Sunday, July 6, Cebu will be open five days a week and closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

    The English duo behind the Hawksmoor says all the right things about opening their latest steakhouse in Chicago — inside the 137-year-old space that once housed the clubby LaSalle Power Co., deep-dish specialist Gino’s East, and Michael Jordan’s Restaurant.

    But the massive renovations (they might as well have burned sage, ridding any sign of LaSalle Power Co.’s existence inside the 16,500-square-foot space) betray any humility. Huw Gott and Will Beckett carry confidence that Chicago, home of steakhouses such as Gibsons and Maple & Ash, will leave their palace of beef enamored; Beckett says Hawksmoor is the steakhouse of choice for fans of Michelin-starred and Beard-winning restaurants, and that matters in Chicago, the home of The Bear and the Beards. Hawksmoor encountered a similar environment when they debuted in New York in 2021. In a piece in February, Eater NY’s Robert Siestema called Hawksmoor “the anti-Peter Luger,” citing the menu’s variety, writing that diners could easily assemble a quality meal by using only starters and sides. Gott expounds on the menu’s variety. They have a vegetarian version of beef Wellington, made with cheese, plus oyster and shitake mushroom duxelles: “We want everyone who comes to be able to eat really well,” Gott says.

    Hawksmoor isn’t advertising where their beef is sourced, but it’s dry-aged Gott and Beckett ensure they’re doing the needed work to build relationships with local purveyors; the aforementioned veggie Wellington uses cheese from a Wisconsin dairy farm, for example. The steaks, including a 44-ounce Chateaubriand, are cooked over charcoal. The fries are cooked in tallow. Brunch and lunch service are on their way. Gott even teases that Chicago could experience the English tradition of a Sunday roast eventually.

    Downtown restaurant owners are excited about Hawkmoor’s arrival — they’ve pegged Thursday, June 27 as the opening day. Restaurateur Sam Sanchez, known for John Barleycorn and Point & Feather, says it’s time to bring some electricity back downtown, something the pandemic sapped from River North and the Loop. Beckett has been commuting back and forth from England, overseeing the project, and has brought over key personnel from New York and other locations.

    Gott and Becket have carved out a niche in the U.K., with some restaurant owners there asking for advice when it comes to international expansion. The friends have known each other since they were six years old and there’s a playful needling between them, reminiscent of a friendlier Statler and Waldorf. It’s apparent when Gott delves into the history of the space as the LaSalle Street Cable Car Powerhouse. He lights up, much to the chagrin of Beckett who bides his time before labeling him as a nerd: “I’ve got transit geek sides of my personality… my dad’s a train man,” Gott admits.

    Visitors will see curved ceilings reminiscent of train cars, a green and white color scheme honoring old CTA branding, and light fixtures that bring back vintage times. Beckett calls his partner obsessive, taking days to research what could appear as minutiae to commoners. But those touches help elevate the dynamics of their dining rooms.

    But to Hawksmoor’s credit, they backed away from building their restaurant around the history of the city’s stockyards. That’s low-hanging fruit to lean in Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle. Hawkmoor is a fully realized concept that’s seen success in England, New York, Dublin, and Edinburgh. Gott talks about the history of Beefsteak Clubs, male-dominated groups that surfaced in the 19th century. The words “Beef and Liberty ‘’ hang above the second-floor bar, a 76-seat dining room that can also be rented out for private events — including “beefsteaks” — a reference to a kind of secret society that would gather, and — you guessed it — nosh on steak. Beef and Liberty was a slogan that dates back to the 1700s. That nod to history doesn’t mean that Hawksmoor is interested in recreating the era. Beckett proudly admits that the customers who fill their seats aren’t just white guys posting steak videos on social media. They’re embracing a come-as-you-are environment and hope the first floor attracts happy hour revelers, though Beckett concedes “happy hour” has a different meaning in England where there are better drink specials. It just means post-work drinks in America, and that’s in part to local lawmakers.

    There are other differences. The dessert menu will be called just that (it’s referred to as a pudding menu in England). Hawksmoor is proud of their cocktails and for the Chicago crowd, they’re serving up a negroni-inspired beverage made with Jeppson’s Malört.

    Entering the restaurant space that once offered macaroni and cheese allegedly based on a recipe from Jordan’s wife at the time, the Gott found a way to pay homage. The third floor features two private event rooms. One of those, a 22-seat space, is called the Big Mike. Plainly, it’s a reference to a champion-winning cattle cow. But basketball superfans can embrace the name as the reason the city held annual summer parties in Grant Park in the ‘90s.

    Chicago has already influenced the chain. Beckett says they’re serving an Italian beef sandwich at locations in the U.K. When asked if it would be authentic, with the proper giardiniera and sliced thin, he smiles.

    “The best thing, you see, you won’t know,” Beckett says with a wink.

    However, starting next week, Chicagoans won’t need to board a plane to visit Hawksmoor. Then they’ll have tangible proof of whether the British steakhouse is worthy of No. 23 or if it needs a jolt of electricity.

    The golden crown was not supposed to fall off King Viserys Targaryen’s rapidly disintegrating head. But when it did, in the midst of a rehearsal three years ago for the HBO series House of the Dragon, it was like a light bulb turned on. In the emotionally and physically arduous Episode 8 scene, the ailing Viserys, played by Paddy Considine, staggers from the threshold of death’s door toward the cold, hard Iron Throne one last time. And during a run-through of this moment, down came that crown—and in came Matt Smith, who plays the king’s mercurial little brother, Daemon Targaryen.

    Smith didn’t miss a beat, according to a bit of HotD lore that’s had a level of canonical dissemination that would please any maester. Daemon retrieved the golden adornment and placed it back on the king’s dome, and absolutely no one on set dared to stop rolling. Later, when Smith and Considine got together with director Geeta Patel to discuss how things went, “They were like, ‘We felt this,’” Patel told Entertainment Weekly in 2022. “‘This felt like the turning point in our relationship.’” When they shot the scene officially, they did so two ways: one in which the crown stays put, as originally planned, and one in which Daemon does his best you dropped this impression—which is what made the final cut.

    And for good reason. The result is a steely, moving little salute of a scene, understated yet alive with fraternal and courtly devotion. It is also a callback to an earlier moment in the series when Daemon patches things up with his brother by relinquishing to him some super-meaningful driftwood. (This would absolutely work on me.) Almost no words are spoken during the exchange, yet the visual impact of the hale Daemon aiding and honoring the ghostlike husk of his older brother speaks volumes about recurring House of the Dragon motifs such as mortality and rivalry and family-first loyalty.

    And then, less than five minutes later in the episode, we got another memorable, if totally tonally different, Daemon-crowning-someone-in-the-throne-room performance. So to speak.

    In that scene, a disagreement over the line of succession for the maritime lands of Driftmark devolves into a passionate airing of grievances from Vaemond Velaryon, Daemon’s cousin’s brother-in-law, and/or Daemon’s daughters’ great-uncle, and so on. (This family tree is more like kudzu.) Vaemond shouts that the sons of Princess Rhaenyra, the heir to the Iron Throne, are “bastards” (fact check: true) and that the princess herself is “a whore.” (Well, now you’ve gone and done it, guy.) It’s enough to make Viserys summon enough dad strength to slowly rise to his feet, draw his blade, and shout: “I’ll have your tongue for that!”

    Once again, Daemon is there to assist. It takes only one visceral swipe of his Valyrian steel sword to leave Vaemond resting in pieces right there on the throne room floor, silenced forever. “He can keep his tongue,” Daemon says as jaws hit the ground all around him, figuratively and literally.

    In just a few minutes, these two fell swoops give a glimpse into the totality of Daemon Targaryen, from his savage, gruesome methods of showing and earning respect to his occasional flashes of humor and even grace. And they demonstrate why Daemon, for all his many, many problems, is such an electric guy to watch in House of the Dragon.

    As Season 2 begins later this week, we know there will once again be crowns and bastards and killing, because this is Westeros, and there always are. We know that Daemon will loom large, both within the universe of the show and in real-world conversation. But what we don’t yet know—and what we may never learn—is what Daemon is truly thinking and wanting and feeling. When it comes to him, those sorts of things have never been black-and-white.


    In the aftermath of Episode 8 last season, some of the minds behind House of the Dragon suddenly found themselves busy describing all of the people Daemon Targaryen is not. “He ain’t Paul Rudd,” one of the show’s writer-producers, Sara Hess, told The Hollywood Reporter, adding that the character had “become ‘Internet Boyfriend’” in a way that baffled her. Clare Kilner, a director, chimed in that Daemon is not “particularly a good father or a good brother,” either. “He’s not Ned Stark,” showrunner Ryan Condal told The New York Times as part of a minor rant about how it confused him to see so many viewers stan Daemon.

    “I see Daemon as having heroic aspects to him, and I understand why people would,” Condal said. “I mean, he’s incredibly charismatic, he’s handsome, he looks great in that wig, he rides a dragon, he has a cool sword. I totally get it. But if you’re looking for Han Solo, who’s always going to do the right thing in the end, you’re in the wrong franchise, folks.”

    Not Paul Rudd, Ned Stark, or Han Solo—OK, so then who is he? In 2018, when the author and general mastermind of Westeros, George R.R. Martin, was making the rounds to promote Fire & Blood—the book that House of the Dragon is based on—he was asked in a virtual Q&A to name his favorite person in the ancient, silver-haired, tight-knit Targaryen family.

    “I’m notorious for my love of gray characters,” Martin responded, “and one of the grayest characters in the entire story of Westeros is Daemon Targaryen, the Rogue Prince.”

    Murderous and magnetic, Daemon loves to party, though you rarely see him belly laugh. He rides a dragon nicknamed “Blood Wyrm,” carries a sword called “Dark Sister,” was knighted as a teenager, and is not above pulling stunts like absconding with a dragon egg and holding it hostage for a while. In Fire & Blood, one passage reads:

    Over the centuries, House Targaryen has produced both great men and monsters. Prince Daemon was both. In his day there was not a man so admired, so beloved, and so reviled in all Westeros. He was made of light and darkness in equal parts. To some he was a hero, to others the blackest of villains.

    Throughout Season 1 of House of the Dragon, we see all of these dualities at play. Daemon is, first and foremost, an unquestionably brave defender of the realm, fighting doggedly in all sorts of miserable locales—it has to smell foul in that Crabfeeder cave!—to help shore up and maintain his family’s material interests and its powerful name. And, in his own way, he’s also a worthy guardian of his brother—that is, when he’s not annoying or insulting Viserys to the point of getting exiled. (Hey, who among us hasn’t gotten kicked off a sibling’s turf at some point?) Daemon routinely seeks to protect the king from enemies, from allies (“I will speak of my brother as I wish,” he tells Corlys “the Sea Snake” Velaryon near the beginning of the show; “You will not”), and even from the king himself. “You’re weak, Viserys,” Daemon explains in the pilot episode. And he does have a point.

    Like it or not, throughout much of the first season, Daemon is what peak performance in Westeros looks like. He has an aura that enables him to pull off both badass suits of armor and sketchy hooded cloaks. His glower is unrivaled; his bars are exquisite. He rules at lurking off to the side of places, smirking and observing like he’s Jared Catalano leaning up against a locker. He is a man of the people who sure does seem committed to ensuring that the Flea Bottom economy is always strong. Whatta guy, right?

    But that’s only the half of it, the good half. There’s also the part of Daemon whose civic engagement in Flea Bottom involves, you know, bringing his teenaged niece Rhaenyra to a brothel where he seduces and then abandons her. Daemon is a dark dude who mocks his brother’s dead son, riles up a bunch of sadistic gold-cloaked vigilantes, ignores his own children, and pummels some poor, innocent courier for simply delivering a message. He is a boy who breaks his favorite toys—and all the other toys, for good measure.

    Daemon does appear to genuinely live his values. It’s just that his values revolve around the Targaryen supremacist idea that, as a man possessing the blood of the dragon, he has not just the right but the duty to act like a fantastical, uncaged, fire-breathing monster whenever he wants, no matter whom it hurts.

    I had thought it was pretty unkind that he referred to his first wife, Rhea Royce, as “the Bronze Bitch,” but that turned out to be nothing compared to the time he showed up unannounced in the Vale dressed like Evil Kermit just to bludgeon her to death with that divorce rock. And I’ll admit that—despite witnessing all of these behaviors, and despite having been informed that, in the books, Daemon is actually even more of a nightmare—I had still assumed that Rhaenyra, Daemon’s proud wife, stubborn niece, and High Valyrian–speaking buddy, would be spared from his icy-hot wrath. I was very, very wrong.

    Of all the harrowing scenes in House of the Dragon’s Season 1 finale—Rhaenyra’s miscarriage, the dragons at war in the skies—it’s the moment when Daemon reaches out and grabs Rhaenyra by her throat that felt hardest to watch. “I think he has a sense of duty to his family, weirdly,” Smith once told the Los Angeles Times about Daemon. “I think he’d lie on his sword for his brother or Rhaenyra.” And yet. By the end of the first season, Viserys is dead, and Rhaenyra is being threatened by Daemon’s own hand. Without some sort of renewed gravitational force in his life, the Rogue Prince may risk spiraling out—and away into his own limitless darkness.


    When Smith was cast as Daemon, he already had experience playing roles whose reputations far preceded his own. “Dr. Who?!” was a common early reaction to his 2009 selection, at the age of 26, as the eleventh Doctor in that storied, high-pressure franchise. When the ambitious historical drama The Crown debuted in 2016, Smith spent the first two seasons defining and refining a portrait of a young Prince Philip in all his prickly, handsome, second-banana glory—a performance that also helped Smith establish himself in the zeitgeist. (According to Smith, the real Prince Harry once shook his hand at a polo match and called him “granddad.”)

    As a teenager, Smith had looked down on acting as “girly” and focused his time and energy on playing high-level soccer until a back injury forced him out of the game. Now, all these years later, he plays at being some of the world’s most well-known men—including ones who could not be less like Smith in real life.

    In interviews, Smith exhibits a personality that’s so affable and cheeky and non-Daemon that I almost find myself needing to stop watching so as to not ruin House of the Dragon’s moody vibe. He has said that Daemon is probably a Scorpio, that Daemon would make a great vampire, and that Caraxes, Rhaenyra, and “a good night out on the town” are what keep his character grounded.

    He has talked about how he slipped a disc in his neck and got a cut on his head during the filming of the show’s first season. And Jimmy Fallon asked him who would win in a fight: Daemon or Jon Snow? “Come on,” was Smith’s response. “Mate, I have a dragon. Listen, I have a lot of respect for Jon Snow. Jon Snow is a bad boy, don’t get me wrong. … But don’t get it twisted: I would fuck those brothers up.”

    For all his merry whimsy, though, Smith is also quite comfortable harnessing the unsavory side of Daemon and the world in which he lives. Ever since he accepted the role, he has been all in—like really all in, willing to not only perform Daemon with unsettling aplomb on-screen, but also publicly make peace with the character’s often violent existence. “He’s got a weird moral compass—perverse and strange,” Smith told the Los Angeles Times about Daemon in 2022. “But nevertheless, there is a set of laws that he’s guided by.” During one press conference last week, Smith remarked, “I admire his conviction, his mistakes, and his actions. He’s like, ‘Fuck them all, man, this is how I’m gonna roll!’”

    So, how might Daemon be rolling when Season 2 begins this week? One profile of Smith in Variety describes a “much weaker” character whose ostensibly shady attempts to look out for himself wind up drawing scrutiny and sowing distrust—especially with Rhaenyra. Interviewed on a CBS morning show recently, Smith hinted that audiences may notice Daemon vibrating at a rather different frequency from last season. “Softer, lazier, fatter, slower,” is how Smith described Daemon’s upcoming arc, sounding a bit like a Daft Punk fan designing a wine mom T-shirt. (Who can mock that up as a new house sigil?)

    As for why Daemon might be rounding into his goblin era? “He’s sort of haunted by his demons, really, by ghosts, by apparitions,” Smith told CBS. “The weight of all the bad deeds that he’s done really comes home to roost, so to speak.” This is interesting to contemplate, considering that in the Season 1 finale—as he grips Rhaenyra by her throat—Daemon straight up scoffs at all things spectral.

    When Rhaenyra tries to tell him about the Song of Ice and Fire that Viserys had impressed upon her before his death, Daemon is exasperated—and, in his grief, jealous that Viserys never mentioned it to him. “My brother was a slave to his omens and portents,” Daemon snaps. “Anything to make his feckless reign appear to have purpose.”

    Viserys may have focused on the fantastical, but Daemon? He prefers things that are real, man. “Dreams didn’t make us kings,” he tells his wife. “Dragons did.” He has a point, but those king-making dragons taketh just as much as they giveth. In Season 1’s closing scene, Daemon has to deliver the news to Rhaenyra that her sweet son Lucerys and his dragon, Arrax, have both been mortally torn asunder in midair by another flying beast.

    That beast would be Vhagar—the oh lawd he comin’–sized dragon that Aemond Targaryen claimed as a child, losing an eye in the process. “Do not mourn me, mother,” a wounded Aemond says to the understandably horrified Queen Alicent after he’s been stitched up in Episode 7. “It was a fair exchange. I may have lost an eye, but I gained a dragon.” This is some real Targaryen math through and through, which explains why it sounds so much like Daemon logic as well.

    That brings us to maybe the biggest open question about Daemon heading into this new season: How will he handle the rise of Aemond, a possibly more sinister, potentially less humane version of himself? Even their names suggest an ouroboric relationship between these silver-coiffed, secondborn royal sons: You can’t spell one without the other, and maybe you can’t delete one without erasing the other, too. Aemond may not have intended to kill Lucerys, but if he’s anything like Daemon—and he is—there’s a good chance that, far from apologizing or repenting, he’ll dig in and double down and do what is needed to make those dragons dance.

    “Prince Daemon had been the wonder and the terror of his age,” reads one of George R.R. Martin’s lines about the Rogue Prince. As House of the Dragon unfolds, not only can you see the scope of what this means, but you can also watch the other characters as they start to see and process what Daemon is capable of, too. When Rhaenyra looks at her husband in the finale, not so much with anger or fear but with pity, it opens up a new world of possibilities for their relationship going forward.

    For a split second, this scanned to me as a sweet moment, a mentor passing the torch to the next generation. And then I snapped to and remembered that this is Westeros, and these people are bad news and great liars and unrepentant sinners, and Aemond’s look of wonder is because he is striving to be a young terror himself.

    Whether he is validating his brother’s reign or vivisecting his rival, Daemon’s motivations throughout the first season of House of the Dragon feel straightforward: He wants to consolidate and preserve his family’s dragon bloodline, and thus the source of his family’s power, whatever the optics or costs. But as Season 2 approaches and those costs keep piling up, will his motivations or his methods start changing?

    For now, the answer to that remains murky, which feels right. Daemon is, after all, one of the grayest guys that this realm has ever seen. That much has always been clear.

    It’s official: the co-founder of Foxtrot on Wednesday, June 5 announced plans to reopen select stores in Chicago, Dallas, and Austin, Texas, this summer. Rumors have swirled for weeks that Mike LaVitola was plotting a comeback. Some former Foxtrot workers, the same employees who weren’t given any warning when parent company Outfox Hospitality suddenly ceased operations on April 23, have been asked by managers about their interest in coming back.

    When Foxtrot’s assets went up for auction on May 10, speculation mounted that the $2.2 million winning bid was from a firm connected with LaVitola. Observers who attended the online auction pointed out that only one party, Further Point Enterprises, made a bid. Little is known about Further Point. Since the auction, the firm’s website has since gone private. But before that, it had already listed Foxtrot as part of its portfolio. Likewise, an email account linked to the site didn’t respond to a message requesting a comment.

    After weeks without comment, other than a statement posted to social media and Foxtrot’s website, a news release sent Wednesday morning confirmed the speculation: “Reopened stores will maintain the same layout and merchandising, focusing on small and local makers.” LaVitola tells Crain’s that the venture is a totally new company, as they’ve secured the original intellectual property and new/renewed several leases.

    But conspicuously absent from the statement was any mention of the Washington, D.C. area, where Foxtrot had seven stores scattered across the District proper, Virginia, and Maryland. There were 33 Foxtrot stores in Chicago and eight in Texas. A list of which stores would reopen wasn’t immediately available. Additionally, last month’s auction didn’t include the properties’ leases with inventory still on the shelves.

    But this doesn’t mean there’s a cohesive plan for all of the former locations. A Foxtrot in Lincoln Park along Armitage Avenue, which shared space with Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, is a special case. Jeni’s has vacated, and there have been rumblings about angry former employees who may have taken a few souvenirs as parting gifts after losing their jobs.

    LaVitola, a University of Chicago graduate, co-founded Foxtrot in 2014 with a focus on delivering snacks to customers via an app; the properties the company owned were more or less mini-warehouses. The company evolved toward a shoppy-shop corner-store model, carrying upscale goods from local vendors. It built a chic brand and drew the attention of customers who regularly spent money at trendy restaurants — Bang Bang Pie & Biscuits, Tortello, and Mindy’s Bakery were among the vendors who sold products at Foxtrot. Eventually, the brand opened locations in prestigious spaces like Fulton Market, Wrigley Field, and inside Willis Tower. Just before the closure, they inked a deal with La Colombe Coffee Roasters for its cafes.

    The company combined with Dom’s Kitchen & Market in late 2023 and formed Outfox Hospitality. Previously the two companies weren’t direct competitors, but they shared space in the retail world. Dom’s, with locations in Lincoln Park and Old Town, positioned itself as a challenger to shops like Whole Foods, an upscale traditional grocery store with a modest food court and a cafe. No bids were placed on Dom’s assets during the May 10 auction. That leaves the two existing locations, plus a planned River North entry, in limbo. Dom’s, like Foxtrot, sought to continue extending reach and influence. Foxtrot pushed aggressive expansion, with LaVitola and company securing nearly $194 million in funding.

    Though the new Foxtrot aims to supply customers with what seems to be largely the same coffees, ice creams, chips, and condiments from local vendors, it may take time to rebuild trust. Eater spoke with several former Foxtrot vendors; none of those interviewed were contacted by the company at the time of publication. They saw the reopening news through a post on Foxtrot’s Instagram shared Wednesday morning, which reads, “a new Foxtrot with some old friends. Coming soon.”

    The account disabled comments on the post, likely to avoid becoming a soapbox for frustrated workers and vendors, as formerly employed workers had on previous social media announcements. Foxtrot remains the defendant in several lawsuits alleging the company violated the state WARN Act, which mandates companies to notify workers if they plan mass layoffs.

    There are still unanswered questions about the future of the company’s product inventory and unpaid invoices. There are also ethical questions about Foxtrot, a company that offered no severance to workers and took away their jobs without warning. Some vendors worry that working with the new Foxtrot will damage their brands.

    The owners of Celeste, the celebrated River North nightclub, have teamed up with the co-founder of another neighborhood lynchpin (Rockit Bar & Grill, which closed in 2019), to open a new restaurant and bar with upscale Mexican food later this summer.

    It’s called Vela — it’s replacing Hogsalt’s 3 Greens Market at 352 W. Hubbard Street, in the shadow of East Bank Club — and will feature dishes like pork belly with mole, a pibil made with Iberican pork collar, and a tlacoyo stuffed with mushrooms and salsa. Tortillas will be made with corn imported from Mexico, according to a news release. A rep says Vela’s menu will showcase Mexico City’s street food and more classic elegant dishes with creative regional dishes.

    The space has room for 120 and has been redecorated with lime wash and stucco walls, plus natural wood herringbone flooring. Customers will see handmade Venetian chandeliers near the entrance and glass-beaded chandeliers in the private dining room. Celeste has a particular decadent style for its bar program. There’s a marble-topped bar shaped like an oval with an illuminated carousel displaying bottles of agave.

    Arturo Gomez, who co-founded (along with Billy Dec and Brad Young) of Rockit Ranch Productions, joined brothers Nader, Fadi, and Rafid Hindo in July 2023 and formed Celeste Group. Their venues are Whiskey Bar, Deco Supper Club, and DISCO (and the rooftop Garden). A rep says more concepts are upcoming. They’ve brought on chef Jorge Angulo as executive chef of the new company.

    Loyola University students at the school’s Rogers Park campus are about to be schooled in the ways of Cambodian cuisine. Their lesson will be taught by Mona Sang, the chef behind Khmai Fine Dining. It’s been nearly six months since Sang closed the original location of her decorated restaurant. The Cambodian refugee is poised to double down on the neighborhood that supported her, pushing Khmai to one of the 2022’s Best New Restaurants in America.

    Sang’s opening a pair of restaurants on Loyola’s campus. Beyond a supercharged return of Khmai, adorned with a black and gold color palette and Bridgerton-inspired Regency-style table settings, Sang will unveil the more casual Kaun Khmai — “child of Khmai” in Khmer — an all-day affair with fun cocktails and Cambodian street food. Sang says she created the new addition to better serve the neighborhood, and not depend on the university community. But it wouldn’t be a surprise if a cheaper option would attract more students and faculty. Sang will also launch the city’s only Cambodian brunch services at both restaurants alongside dinner. Sang hopes to reveal breakfast and lunch service in August.

    “It’s a lot,” Sang admits. “When you’re opening a restaurant, one thing gets fixed and then five other things break. We have two restaurants with two different menus coming from one kitchen, so we’re trying to perfect that [process].”

    Khmai’s egg rolls have earned a devoted following.

    The new Khmai stands inside a Loyola University-owned space at 6580 N. Sheridan Road on the ground floor of the Hampton Inn. Hotel guests generally expect daytime options, and Sang is eager to deliver a menu with unique items like fresh croissants filled with lychee or kumquat cream, congee with blood sausage, and num por peay — glutinous rice flour stuffed with yellow mung bean and topped with coconut cream.

    Kaun Khmai’s weekend brunch menu will also include doughnuts from suburban bakery Gurnee Donuts, owned by Sang’s friend and fellow first-generation Cambodian American Kevin Lee. Cambodians have played a significant role in the U.S. doughnut industry, particularly in California — a story detailed at length in the 2020 documentary The Donut King.

    Sarom Sieng — Sang’s mother and source of culinary inspiration — and Lee’s parents are survivors of the Cambodian genocide, an era from 1975 to 1979 when the totalitarian Khmer Rouge regime murdered between 1.5 and 2 million people. Fellow Cambodian American chef Ethan Lim of Hermosa has also shared parts of his family’s story of survival in interviews and the award-winning PBS documentary short Cambodian Futures.

    At the restaurants, Sang has opted to home in on serving her neighbors in Rogers Park rather than purely devoting her efforts to luring Loyola students — an inconsistent presence in the area thanks to the churn of the school year. But Sang is also the mother of an incoming Loyola freshman and spent recent weeks testing recipes on her student employees. She’s noticed that many of them miss eating home-cooked meals and hopes to eventually create low-cost meal kits that students can purchase and make themselves.

    At the outset, staff will seat diners for both restaurants in the 40-seat Kaun Khmai space or on a 30-seat patio. Stay tuned for news of an opening date.

    Perhaps FX thought fans would forget about The Bear after the network dropped a Season 3 teaser last week before Memorial Day Weekend. Never fear, the network released another trailer on Wednesday afternoon.

    While Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach are all listed as stars of the show, FX could have listed another: The CTA. The new trailer is chockful of the El whether it’s various train stops or the comforting rumble of the trains in the background. Given the CTA’s well-documented problems, from late-arriving trains to wacky political hijinks, consider this positive PR. Unlike Mayor Brandon Johnson’s nominee for the RTA board, it appears someone involved in production has actually ridden the CTA. Public transportation has been a strong theme in the previous two seasons.

    Season 3 debuts on Thursday, June 27, and last week, FX unveiled new signage for the restaurant, which shares the same color scheme as the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies instead of the orange and navy from Chicago’s football team. The remodeled beef stand went extinct at the end of Season 1, with the debut of a new fine dining restaurant. During the two-minute and 20-second trailer, Carmy Berzatto announces his cheffy intentions: “We’re going to get a star,” he declares.

    Presumably, that’s of the Michelin variety, but who knows in The Bear universe, a world that includes Chomp Chicago, a digital publication that bears a striking resemblance to Eater Chicago. Another scene shows Tina Marrero (Liza Colón-Zayas) sniffing a black truffle and going to a market set up outdoors in a space that looks a lot like Longman & Eagle in Logan Square (signage from Antioch’s Jacobson Family Farms makes a cameo). Marrero also seems perplexed by Carmy’s intention of changing the menu daily, or as Richie Jerimovich (Moss-Bachrach) calls them “the scribblings of a madman.” Tensions in the kitchen run amok through the trailer, even as an unmistakenly pregnant Natalie Berzatto (Abby Elliot) directs traffic around the restaurant.

    The intrigue builds as Carmy offers Sydney Adamu (Edebiri) a partnership in the restaurant so they can be on equal footing and push each other. Not to give everything away, but for folks ardent about ensuring Carmy and Syd don’t fall romantically for each other, there are developments. Especially with the return of Carmy’s ex-girlfriend, Claire (Molly Gordon), who ditched the chef at the end of Season 2 during his restaurant opening meltdown in the walk-in fridge.

    The footage also revisits the bulletin board of misfits filled with photos of food critics revealed earlier in the year: “If any food critics come in, it’s code red,” Neil Fak (Matty Matheson) tells brother Ted (Ricky Staffieri). If there’s any irony, there aren’t many food critics left in Chicago, so carry on.

    The Bear Season 3 releases on Thursday, June 27 with all episodes available via Hulu.

    Archie returns to Destiny 2 with a trip to the Neomuna following the May 28, 2024, weekly reset.

    This is the final step in a series of “Where in the System is Archie” quests in the wake of the Into the Light update — which have been staggered out week-by-week in the lead up to The Final Shape.

    Note this quest expires on the June 3 weekly reset — a full day before The Final Shape launches on June 4. This is because Bungie will take Destiny 2 down for 24 hours ahead of the expansion.

    Remember, provided you complete any Archie quest before the arrival of The Final Shape, you’ll get your hands on the Blue Steel shader, while the lore for all Archie quests will be available from June 4 on.


    How to start ‘Where in Neomuna is Archie?’ in Destiny 2

    To start the final “Where is Archie” quest, head to the Tower’s Annex and find the paw prints.

    You can reach this location by using the southwest-most fast travel point, then traveling straight ahead down the corridor. The paw prints will appear on the ledge to your right.

    Investigate the prints and go talk to Ada-1 (found in the Annex proper opposite) to start the latest quest.

    Now, head to Neomuna, and speak to Nimbus at Strider’s Gate. Once done, the search begins.

    This clue refers to Nimbus’s gym room, which is also where you place all the action figure collectibles on Neomuna.

    From Nimbus, jump directly down and to the right, off the platform. The building will be right in front of you. Go inside and you’ll find Archie’s footprints between the coffee tables.

    Now you’re in for quite a journey to visit the Veil.

    This clue refers to the Veil Containment and Irkalla Complex areas, which are the two southeastern-most points on the Neomuna map.

    To reach this place, you can’t just launch Veil Containment, as you’ll need to be outside. Instead, you need to go through the Zephyr Concourse and then the ESI Terminal. Keep left the entire way there and you’ll eventually find a portal, which will take you to the Veil Containment area.

    Continue up to the door, where you’ll be attacked by a bunch of Cabal and a Tormentor. Kill everything, including the Tormentor, and return to the door. You’ll find Archie’s footprints just outside of the door to the Veil.

    Now you’ll need to go on another long walk near Liming Harbor.

    This clue refers to Maya’s Rest, which is the sandy area to the east of Liming Harbor.

    Land at Liming Harbor and take the path east through the rocks. This is basically a straight shot to Maya’s Retreat, but it takes a bit to get there. Continue on until you reach the sandy area.

    You’ll have to kill a lot of Cabal here, including a Colossus boss. Once you kill the boss, all of the other enemies will disappear and you’ll be able to collect the footprints, which are overlooking the city.

    Mercifully, Archie’s final stop is a much shorter run.

    This final clue refers to the Thrilladrome Lost Sector in Liming Harbor.

    Land in Liming and make your way north to the Lost Sector entrance. Walk inside and just do the normal version — as-in don’t launch the Legend or Master version if they’re available — and eventually you’ll find Archie waiting by a claw machine. Do not go through the Vex portal at the end. If you do, you’ll miss Archie, who is to the right of the portal.

    Go give him some pets and you’ll finish the exploration portion of the quest. Now it’s time to head back to Ada-1 in the Tower. She’ll give you an Archie Plush Toy and 10 Trophy of Bravery tokens — useful for getting more Brave weapons. Whether you keep the plush is up to you. Archie will be sad if you don’t!

    The Archie quests will disappear entirely with the weekly reset of June 3, so this is your final chance to find Archie.

    It’s the end of an era in River North as the Underground, where locals would text their friends late at night with photos of Justin Bieber, Chance the Rapper, or Katy Perry has closed. Opened in 2007, along with Rockit Bar & Grill, located around the corner on Hubbard Street, the two venues helped further co-owner Billy Dec as a household name in Chicago.

    But after Dec split with partners, Brad Young and Arturo Gomez, Rockit closed in 2019 ending a 15-year run. That was before the pandemic, which hurt the world of music venues and bars with folks focusing on social distancing. Even in a post-vaccine world where Chicago’s tourists are returning, some businesses may have endured too much to survive. Last week, Dec announced the Underground, 56 W. Illinois Street, would close and convert into a private event space. That’s a move Chicago is bound to see more of, with the biggest example being in October 2023 when Boka Restaurant Group closed its French restaurant, the 10-month-old Le Select — led by acclaimed chef Daniel Rose — turning that River North space into the Wellsley.

    The Underground, at 17 years old, has a more storied history versus Le Select. Dec, a Chicago native and graduate of the Latin School of Chicago, moved to Nashville where in 2018 he opened a location of his River North restaurant, Sunda. He also opened a Sunda in Tampa, Florida. Along those lines, he’s bringing the Underground brand to Tennessee, opening the Underground Cocktail Club at the end of the month or early June: “We are so humbled, honored, excited, and proud to be able to share a piece of our Chicago original in new markets to come,” a statement shared via social media from Dec reads. The project was announced in 2022.

    At one point, Dec also said he wanted to open Rockit locations in other cities. While that didn’t happen, Dec did win local Emmys and was an Obama appointee in 2014 to the President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

    Dec hasn’t abandoned Chicago — he opened the fourth outpost of Sunda in February, inside a new Fulton Market — but the once mighty Rockit Ranch Productions has shrunk. In 2017, as he geared up to leave Chicago, he said there would be an increased focus on moneymakers. That happened as Otto Mezzo (formerly Ay Chiwowa), his venture with chef Kevin Hickey, closed along Chicago Avenue in River North. Hickey has since brought James Beard attention to his South Side restaurant, the Duck Inn.

    But the two Sundas are all that remains of Dec’s once thriving empire in Chicago, one that included the Underground, and Le Passage, the latter of which closed in 2011. Gomez, who was roommates with Dec in a Wicker Park apartment, last year partnered with Nader, Fadi, and Rafid Hindo — the brothers behind Celeste. The quartet formed Celeste Group, which includes Whiskey Bar, Deco Supper Club, DISCO, and the rooftop Garden at 111. W. Hubbard Street). They’ll soon open Vela this summer at 352 W. Hubbard Street.

    Dec declined further comment to Block Club Chicago, which first reported the news. The story discusses the changing landscape of Chicago’s social scene. Celebrities and social media influencers are looking for something different, or perhaps newer. River North lost Paris Club in 2016 but survived. Chicago still has plenty of places for that — especially during music festival season.

    You’ll find hidden stone faces scattered throughout Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2. Finding these collectibles — and focusing on them — will open a new path leading to a tree containing a bit of lore.

    Our Hellblade 2 guide will show you where to find all 17 hidden faces in Senua’s Saga. We’ll break them down by chapter below. When you open the Chapters screen, you’ll be able to select a subsection of each chapter. We’ll also note which subsection the hidden stone faces appear in if you want to go back and find any you missed.


    Hidden faces rewards in Hellblade 2

    Each hidden face you find will reveal a secret path when you focus on it. Down that path, you’ll find a small tree — a version of Yggdrasil. Focusing on the tree will give you a snippet of lore.

    Finding all 17 hidden stone faces will earn you the “Glimpses of the Gods” achievement. It’ll also unlock a new section in the Extras menu — Landdisasteinar Stories — where you can listen to the stories again.


    Chapter 1: Reykjanesta hidden faces

    There are no stone faces in chapter 1, “Reykjanesta.”


    Chapter 2: Freyslaug hidden faces

    There are two stone faces to find in chapter 2, “Freyslaug.” There is one during “Return Home” and one during “Meeting the Stranger.”

    After you solve the first rune puzzle, the “Return Home” section starts with Senua’s memory of home. After you find her mirror and learn to fight with it, you come back to the real(er) world.

    You’ll cross a gruesomely decorated bridge to more of the village and have to pass through a house with a man hanging from a hook inside.

    When you get back outside, continue along the path until you reach the torch you see ahead of you.

    The first stone face is impossible to miss — you have to focus on it to open the path.

    After you rescue Fargrimr from the draugar, he’ll lead you away from the village. Not far into your walk, you’ll come to a broken bridge.

    When you reach it, look to the left. You’ll spot the next hidden face along an outcropping of rock there.


    Chapter 3: Raudholar hidden faces

    There are five stone faces to find in chapter 3, “Raudholar.” There are two during “Red Hills” and three during “On the Hill.”

    Not long into your walk with both Fargrimr and Thorgestr, you’ll walk down a hill while Fargrimr starts to tell you about his village. You’ll come to the ruins of a few scattered buildings.

    Take a right as soon as you enter the clearing. There’s a path there that will lead back and to the right.

    It will bring you to a small, circular clearing. Look to the left to find the next stone face.

    In the same area, go back to the main path. This time, head to the left.

    Walk away from the main path again, and you’ll pass what’s left of a house. Keep walking straight back from that house to find the next hidden face.

    After your trip through the dark and horror-filled forest, you’ll have another conversation with Fargrimr. He’ll set you on your trip to finding the hiddenfolk.

    The path with lead you through a shallow puddle. Just past that, watch for the path to split.

    Take the left fork, and you’ll be looking directly at the next hidden face.

    After you complete the first of the hiddenfolk’s puzzles, head through the gate you just opened.

    On your way up the hill, just a little past the first puzzle, you’ll spot the next stone face in the stones on your right.

    After the second hiddenfolk puzzle, pass through the gate. The path will lead you up and then down a hill, and you’ll have to drop off a pair of ledges.

    In the next clearing, the main path goes off to the left and past another shallow puddle. Over on the right side, look for another pair of ledges to climb.

    At the top, the next stone face will be immediately next to you on the right.


    Chapter 4: Huldufolk hidden faces

    There are four stone faces to find in chapter 4, “Huldufolk.” There are three during “Enter the Caves” and one during “Act of Sacrifice.”

    When you enter the caves at the beginning of “Enter the Caves,” you’ll squeeze through a narrow passage and then drop off a ledge. Just past that, you’ll have to crouch through a small doorway.

    As you pass through, keep an eye on your left to find the next stone face in the wall.

    Continue along and you’ll find the first brazier. Lighting that one reveals a ramp up to the main path. Keep following it through the tunnels until you reach the second, already-lit brazier.

    When you loop around to the right to reach the brazier and extinguish it, it’ll reveal the doorway to the next section. Instead of dropping down, turn around. The next hidden face was, well, hidden behind a section of rock that you passed on your way.

    Just past that second brazier, you’ll come to a hole in the floor that you have to drop through. When you land, you’ll be in waist-deep water.

    As soon you land, turn around. The tunnel extends behind you, and that’s where you’ll find the next hidden face.

    After a long and tense trip through the dark while being led by the hiddenfolk’s lights, you’ll eventually come to a naturally lit cave with floating boulders. There’s a hole with floating rocks to the right — the way out — and another to the left. The left one is where you’re heading.

    As you approach the edge of the hole, look to your left to find the next hidden face.


    Chapter 5: Bardarvik hidden faces

    There are six stone faces to find in chapter 5, “Bardarvik.” There is one during “To the Sea,” two during “Sjavarrisi,” and three during “Another Question.”

    At the start of “To the Sea,” you’ll be walking with Fargrimr and Thorgestr along some cliffs. The hiddenfolk will start talking to Senua and the men will disappear so she can reflect on the beauty of the place.

    Keep following the path until you cross a small stream. To the right, there’s a tiny waterfall. The next hidden face is just to the right of it.

    A short time later, you’ll run into Astridr and her people. Once the tension is diffused, you’ll begin walking with her. Not long into the walk, Astridr will squeeze through a narrow gap in the rock.

    Before you follow her through, look to the right to find the next hidden face.

    After you solve the first rune puzzle in Bardarvik, you’ll get back on the main path.

    Just a little way farther along, the path will go right up to the cliff edge and you might be able to spot Astridr in the distance. Look to the right to find the next stone face.

    The next hidden face can actually be found during the second rune puzzle here. Go through to puzzle until you find the middle rune — the curved or ψ-shaped one.

    After you find it, you’ll head to a second cove. Before you start flipping stones around on your way to the third rune, drop down to the beach. Behind the shipwreck directly ahead of you, there’s a narrow gap that leads into a tunnel.

    Follow the tunnel to the end — there’s a lorestangir down at the beach. Just as you exit the tunnel, turn around. You would’ve run right past the hidden face on your way through.

    Once you solve the second rune puzzle and head into the beach cave, you’ll go into a dreamy underwater sequence where the hiddenfolk share Sjavarrisi’s story.

    When that’s done, Senua will find herself back on the (a?) beach. Head up the hill into the town. You’ll pass by a lit torch and then turn to walk downhill. At the second torch you pass, there will be a pole with cowbells hanging from it. Just past that, take a right to head behind the house.

    You’ll find the next hidden face between the fence and the house’s roof.

    From that stone face, turn around and head back to the main path. Take a right to start following it again, and then take the first left off of it.

    The dimly lit path will go path a house and snake through some low walls before leading you past another lorestangir. Keep following it to the end where you’ll find a house. Walk around to the right side and to the torch at the back. Turn to the left to find the final hidden face.

    There are no stone faces in chapter 6, “Borgarvirki.”

    Hub 51 will close next month after 16 years in River North, according to a news release. The two-level, part restaurant, and part bar, marked a new chapter for Chicago’s largest hospitality company, Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises, as it symbolized a passing of the torch from co-founder Rich Melman to his sons, Jerrod and R.J. Hub 51 was a canvas for the brothers in establishing their own venture.

    The space also featured a bar, called Sub 51, and plenty of rooms for private events. Hub 51’s menu was, eclectic to say the least, covering a tremendous amount of ground from fish tacos, to chili, to chicken tenders. While the restaurant debuted with a roar, busy on weekends, and where visitors would see the occasional celebrity, at the end it felt like a garden variety chain. And even as a LEYE restaurant, that was never ownership’s original intention.

    In closing Hub 51 at 51 W. Hubbard Street — its final day is scheduled for Saturday, June 8 — LEYE is turning the page again and introducing a pair of new venues. They’ve recruited HaiSous’s Thai Dang and the Vietnamese-born chef will debut a Southeast Asian restaurant, Crying Tiger, in 2025. Crying Tiger is a reference to the marinated beef dish often served as an appetizer at Thai restaurants. The “tears” are from the juicy fat dripping from the meat during cooking and hitting the flames of the grill.

    Dang’s Pilsen restaurant, which he runs with his wife Danielle Dang, won’t be impacted. HaiSous will remain independent as LEYE has also made him a partner in the endeavor. Lettuce has selected David Collins Studio — the same interior architecture firm that designed Tre Dita, its lavish restaurant inside the St Regis Chicago — to design Crying Tiger.

    For Dang, who moved to Chicago from Virginia to follow the career of French chef Laurent Gras, partnering with LEYE is a full-circle moment. Gras was working at Michelin-starred L20. At the time of his arrival, Dang says he didn’t know that L20, which was open from 2008 to 2014, was a Lettuce Entertain You restaurant.

    But before Crying Tiger opens, Lettuce will unveil a cocktail bar later this year. It’s called the Dip Inn and will feature “expertly crafted iconic drinks.” LEYE is calling it a “classic American cocktail bar.” The drinks are from Kevin Beary, the beverage director at the company’s tropical-themed bars in River North, Three Dots and a Dash, and the Bamboo Room.

    Details are scarce but look for more information in the coming days. In the meantime, Chicagoans have less than a month to say goodbye to Hub 51.

    “Zero Hour” is the second secret mission to ever come to Destiny 2, and it’s finally back in the game as part of the Into the Light update and the May 14 reset. Much like the reprised “The Whisper” mission and its Whisper of the Worm reward, the updated version of “Zero Hour” rewards a fully craftable version of the Exotic pulse rifle Outbreak Perfected.

    In this Destiny 2 guide, I’ll walk you through how to complete “Zero Hour” and get the pattern for Outbreak Perfected. Whether this is your first time experiencing “Zero Hour” or it’s just been too many years for you to remember the path, I’ve got you covered.


    How to start ‘Zero Hour’ in Destiny 2

    To start “Zero Hour,” all you need to do now is talk to Ada-1.

    Head to the Tower Annex — the landing point over by the Drifter — and head up to Ada-1, the vendor who normally just handles transmog. She’ll give you the “Asset Protection” quest. With the quest in hand, all you need to do is open up the “Into the Light” submenu in the Director and select “Zero Hour.”

    Completing the Exotic mission and finishing the quest at Ada-1 will reward you with the pattern for Outbreak Perfected.


    ‘Zero Hour’ walkthrough in Destiny 2

    You have 40 minutes to beat this mission on the Normal difficulty.

    Navigating the Destiny 1 Tower in ‘Zero Hour’

    “Zero Hour” starts out with a lot of combat as you first adventure through the Destiny 1 Tower. You’ll be dealing with some powerful Fallen here, so make sure to put on your best gear and an assortment of ad-clearing weapons. As with all dense Fallen encounters, the Riskrunner Exotic submachine gun will serve you well if you’re having trouble.

    Make your way through the bazaar and into the small vent. On the other side, you’ll be where the Speaker’s chambers once were. Clear the enemies, and move through the sweeper bot hallway.

    You’ll find yourself in the courtyard, which is filled with enemies of varying type and power. There’s even a Brig here now, an enemy type that didn’t exist when the original mission came out. Take them all down to unlock the rest of the path.

    Continue through the old tower until you reach the flaming scaffolding where the original opening mission of Destiny 2 takes place. Slide under the big door next to the M and drop down the elevator shaft. Climb in the vent and follow it.

    You’ll emerge in a giant shipyard. Turn immediately left, and you’ll see a ship sitting below you. Run up to it and crouch under its nose. Follow the path and take a right into the vent. Follow the hallway you drop into and take the other vent above you. Take a left and enter another vent behind the toolbox.

    Follow the vent and take your first right. There are a few doorways below, but you only need to take the one directly under you. If you’re the first player to arrive, you’ll have a handy metal lip to stand on. If you’re following a teammate, it’ll have broken off by now. Step off the ledge, turn around, and push forward against the wall as you fall. Climb into the ledge and follow the vent.

    Jump onto the first piece of yellow scaffolding and then onto the next. Look toward the tower. There are two drain openings and a platform to your left. Depending on your class, you can either jump straight to the landing or hop your way to the landing through the drain openings.

    On the landing, look off and down toward the tower. You’ll see a small protrusion. This is your target. Jump off the landing and move toward the wall. Land on the antenna.

    Look out toward where the city and turn left. Jump on the pipes until you reach the next landing. You can pull a switch here to help your friends catch up.

    Jump onto the scaffolding above you and run up to the open vent. Jump in and follow the path. You’ll be in a big elevator shaft. Start climbing up a few flights until you’re at the second from the top. Shoot open the vent on the right and climb through.

    Now you’ll be surrounded by spinning fans, each of which have an Explosive Shank in the middle. Look for the red lights and jump into them. If you hold against the wall, you’ll save yourself from the fans. When you land, be careful — don’t hit the ground too hard and skid off into another fan. Repeat this process, carefully taking out or maneuvering around the Shanks, until you’re at the bottom of the shaft. Climb in another vent.

    You’ll now find yourself in a long hallway that looks completely blank. Jump off the ledge and onto the silver vents hanging off the wall. These are tricky to stand on, so limit your movement. Jump to the next one and finally into the open door on the far side. Once again, there is a switch here to help your friends through the puzzle if they’re lagging behind.

    How to navigate the ‘Zero Hour’ maze

    Follow the vents until you get to Ventilation. Walk forward and take a look at the map, which you can see clearly in the image above.

    This is the maze section of “Zero Hour,” and it looks much scarier than it actually is. The white lines represent hallways you can walk through, with the red arrows denoting switches you need to hit. You start the map in the center of the bottom-most rectangle’s southern white line. When you’ve had a good look at the map, turn around and drop down two floors of vents.

    You’re in the maze now, just like in the picture. We recommend sending one player right and another left, just to speed the process up. The instructions below are for the right-side player, so left-side players should just mirror my instructions.

    1. Run forward and take a left. Keep running until you find a split in the hall.
    2. Turn right and into another rectangle.
    3. Follow the path and hit the first switch.
    4. Keep running until you reach the original hallway.

    Here, you’ll likely have to wait for a wall of electricity to pass. If the electricity is just starting to arc, you can run through. Otherwise, you’ll have to sit and brood — Darth Maul style.

    When the electricity drops, take a right turn. You should start hearing an unsettling sound about now. An electric shredder is also running the maze with you, named TR3-VR by Bungie and the Destiny community. There are some alcoves to hide in so it can pass, but just to your left you should see a giant cavern with pipes in it.

    Jump on the pipes and wait for the machine to pass. You can tell if the shredder is chasing you by its sound or giant red light.

    With the machine gone, jump back over to your hallway and take a left. Follow the path until a hallway opens on the right. Go hit the switch like last time and return to your normal hallway.

    Take a right and follow the path until you can take another right. This is the exit. If you’ve hit all four switches, the doors will be open.

    Run into the new room and hop on one of the elevators to your right or left. Hit the button and wait for them to slowly lift you into the rafters.

    Jump onto the platform and shoot out the vent. Head down the chute and stay in the center of the slide. Jump to slow your momentum, or risk death by splattering against a wall. When you come out of the chute, turn left and then immediately right. Crawl through the vent on the floor.

    How to navigate the vault maze in ‘Zero Hour’

    You’ll be in the old Cryptarch Vault now, and the mission is nearly done.

    On the opposite side of the Vault’s door, you’ll see some pipes on the wall. Next to the pipe, you’ll see the Cryptarch symbol. Go stand by it and the secret door will open. Run forward until you reach the section with white floor panels. You’ll need to step on these in the correct order or you’ll get incinerated.

    There are six rows of panels, each are five panels across. We’ve numbered the panels below in order, so R1 – 1 is the farthest left panel on the first row, R1 – 2 is the farthest left panel in the second row, R3 – 5 is the farthest right of the third row, and so on.

    You’ll start on the second tile from the right on the first row. From there, here’s the order you should follow, with the direction you need to head in in parentheses:

    • R1 – 4 (Start)
    • R2 – 4 (Forward)
    • R2 – 3 (Left)
    • R2 – 2 (Left)
    • R2 – 1 (Left)
    • R3 – 1 (Forward)
    • R4 – 1 (Forward)
    • R5 – 1 (Forward)
    • R5 – 2 (Right)
    • R5 – 3 (Right)
    • R4 – 3 (Back)
    • R4 – 4 (Right)
    • R4 – 5 (Right)
    • R5 – 5 (Forward)
    • R6 – 5 (Forward)

    Once you’re through the panels, head to the end of the vault.

    At the broken case, take a right and you’ll see a burned hole in the ground. Drop through it. Run forward and hop into another vent. It’s time to fight.

    How to defeat Siriks in ‘Zero Hour’

    When you drop down, you’ll find a Fallen Captain wielding a Scorch Cannon: Siriks. They’re surrounded by an army of Fallen.

    Take out Siriks’ Fallen allies. They’ll summon turrets, big Servitors that grant immune shields to everything (these are very annoying, so kill them first) and a ton of Shanks. Just keep killing everything until Siriks’ health is about one-third full. You’ll get a message on your screen that says “Siriks retreats… for now” and the boss will disappear.

    Two Fallen Walker tanks will appear on the raised platforms on your left and right, along with some additional Fallen. Take everything out and you’ll get another ominous message: “Siriks returns… heavily armed.”

    Siriks will drop back into the area in a massive Brig mech. This thing has full health, so it’s going to take some time and work to take it out. Once you manage to blast off theshield on the Brig, the boss will start lobbing massive tank and constant airstrikes. Just keep moving to dodge these attacks and you’ll eventually take it down.

    With Siriks dead, head up to the chest that spawns, say hi to Mithrax, and grab the Outbreak Perfected schematic. Head back to the Tower and talk to Ada-1. She’ll give you the Outbreak Perfected, complete with the pattern attached. Ada-1 will also give you the “Outbreak Refined 1” quest, which you can complete for some additional crafted perk options on your new Outbreak Perfected.

    If you already have the Catalyst for Outbreak Perfected from the original version of “Zero Hour,” you’ll instantly be able to place it on your newly crafted gun. However, if this is your first time running the mission, you’ll need to hop back in on Heroic mode in order to pick up the Catalyst and improve your Outbreak Perfected.

    A South Side icon is taking up residence a few doors west from a shuttered Foxtrot in Wicker Park. The Original Rainbow Cone, the parlor known for sliced — not scooped — ice cream is opening a North Side location.

    The opening date is Tuesday, May 21 at 1750 W. Division Street. Rainbow Cone displaced Wicker Park’s coffee shop Caffe Streets, which had been in operation for 13 years. The interiors have been painted over pink and the sidewalk patio has been revamped. With Kurimu and VinnyD’s (the latter could reopen in June), there are plenty of options for frosty treats in the area.

    The thought of the South Side staple, one that’s been around for 98 years, opening on the North Side was unthinkable until 2019 when Rainbow Cone partnered with Buona, the famous Chicago street food chain that specializes in Italian beef. The goal was to expand throughout Chicago and the country. The company opened a few locations in the suburbs after teasing customers by having an ice cream truck parked and ready to serve outside selected Buona locations. Long lines formed and ownership saw there was a demand.

    A second location opened in 2016 at Navy Pier. In March, the partnership announced plans to open 10 locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. There are also plans for Michigan, Florida, and California.

    The Rainbow is not only extending throughout the country, but it’s adding new flavors. For the first time in the parlor’s nearly 100 years, ownership is added to the menu. Look for four new options, according to a news release: Chocolate Obsession, Cosmic Birthday, Minty City, and Orange Dream. These flavors join the core orange sherbet, pistachio, Palmer House, strawberry, and chocolate. Together, like the glow from the Care Bear Stare or the rings from Captain Planet’s Planeteers, these five flavors form a rainbow.

    Art Smith takes a quick look around Time Out Market Chicago and softly asks: “Do you know what chefs do after they’re 60?”

    Smith, the celebrity chef who worked with Oprah Winfrey and has served dignitaries, like President Biden, didn’t expect an answer. Smith posed the question to justify his new rapport with the Chicago Hounds, a professional rugby team founded in 2022 that plays home matches at SeatGeek Stadium in suburban Bridgeview. In February, Smith and the Hounds announced a collaboration in which Smith’s new brand, Sporty Bird, began selling chicken sandwiches and more at the stadium. Over the weekend, Smith also unveiled a Sporty Bird-branded food stall at Time Out Market, the food hall run by the media company.

    Beyond his association with Oprah, Smith is known for restaurants like Table Fifty-Two in Gold Coast, a hit mostly known for its fried chicken. Smith is proud of the restaurant (which was rebranded as Blue Door Kitchen & Garden in 2016) and its alums: “Joe is just killing it here,” Smith says of Joe Flamm, the chef and co-owner of Rose Mary, right down the street from Time Out Market.

    Last year, Smith opened Reunion at Navy Pier and he maintains a residence in Hyde Park. But he still travels. He talked about an upcoming trip to India and meeting esteemed chef Francis Mallmann earlier this year during a visit to an island in Patagonia. Even though he joked about his age, Smith’s star continues to shine, passing through open doors closed to most food hall tenants. Most food halls brand themselves as incubators, taking chances on relatively unproven talent. Smith is the opposite.

    Still, the venture with the Hounds is a risk. He touts himself as the only professional chef who owns a professional sports team in America. It’s a claim that’s hard to verify. For example, is a burger cook who works at an Applebee’s and has shares in the publicly-owned Green Bay Packers, considered an owner of a pro team?

    Smith wants to bring energy to Time Out (“I want to throw a party,” he says) and sees potential — even as the food hall goes through changes. Smith praised chef Jorge Kaum, the chef behind Gutenburg, a food hall burger stall. Kaum is also a chocolatier and made chocolate-shaped rugby balls in honor of Smith’s opening.

    Avli is set to leave the market at the end of the month — they’re going to open a stand-alone location in the area. Evette’s left earlier this year. Of the original lineup from 2019, only chef Bill Kim (Urbanbelly) remains. A few of the restaurants had problems with management and didn’t like the terms of their contracts. Food halls have struggled during the pandemic. Two closed in the West Loop/Fulton Market — Politan Row and Fulton Galley. In March, Time Out brought in a new general manager, Steve Pelissero, to bring in some stability.

    Sporty Bird features chicken (“I do know how to cook more than chicken,” Smith says). The spicy nuggets have heat, at least during an opening event last week. But there’s a worry that too much heat will alienate customers in the area.

    Unexpectedly, the stall has a familiar face behind the counter. Carol Cheung, the chef and the owner behind Hyde Park’s Jade Court, an acclaimed Cantonese restaurant and longtime member of the Eater Chicago 38, is managing operations. As Smith is a Hyder Parker, he befriended Cheung and wants to find a way to revive Jade Court, which struggled at the University of Chicago’s Harper Court development. Time Out does have spaces available.

    What gave Smith the idea to partner with the hounds? Last year, soccer legend Lionel Messi launched a fried chicken sandwich in Miami with Hard Rock Cafe. Smith saw the sandwich become a viral sensation, yet he was hardly impressed by the sandwich: “I could do better,” Smith says.

    Some vendors have fled, others say they’ve made money at the food hall. Kaum, who also has a stall in Miami, says things are improving in Chicago. Smith is hopeful that Sporty Bird, and perhaps a Jade Court revival, can take advantage. He’s reminded of something his friend Oprah once told him: “You don’t have to be first,” Smith recalls Winfrey saying. “But you do have to be better.”
