    [ad_1]

Ice Spice is setting the record straight on BBL rumors. When trolls started pressing her about getting cosmetic surgery, the raptress didn’t bite her tongue. She clocked the chatter and cleared things up once and for all.

Ice Spice Clears The Air On BBL Rumors During Livestream

LiveBitez snagged a few clips from Ice Spice’s Twitch stream where she gave fans a peek into a day in her life. While chopping it up with viewers, she kept it all the way and didn’t dodge a single question. When someone asked, “Spice, do you have a BBL?” She basically said, “find somebody else to play with” and hit them with a quick, “No!” Then she doubled down, letting folks know curves run in her family, “No babe! This is genetic.”

Along with shutting down the surgery talk, Ice Spice also spilled on her go-to chill fit. The ‘Munch’ rapper told fans she loves rocking men’s boxers when she’s laid up, chilling with no makeup on. But when bae pulls up? She said the boxers got to go!

Spice Responds To Weight Loss Criticism

Folks have been clocking Ice Spice’s figure for a minute now. Prior to the BBL and cosmetic surgery allegations, they were on her heavy trying to credit Ozempic as the reason behind her weight loss after she appeared with a slimmer figure back in March. But in true Ice Spice fashion, she shut it all down real quick during an X spaces session in 2024. She said she wished people never even learned about Ozempic. The femcee told fans that Ozempic had nothing to do with her snatched bawdy. It was actually putting in work in the gym and sticking to a healthy diet that did the trick. “It’s called the gym, it’s called eating healthy, it’s called being on tour. Like, what the hell?” Ice stated.

Ice Shuts Down The TL After Unveiling Fresh NEW Look

The internet stays wanting the tea on Ice, but she’s too busy serving looks to fill them in. Before folks started asking about cosmetic surgeries, she left the TL shook after she debuted a fresh new hairstyle at the top of this month. The ‘Hannah Montana’ spitter rocked a short, pretty pink blunt cut bob, that was parted on the side and featured a bit of an asymmetrical edge. Fans know ice first popped out on the scene with curly hair, but she was definitely feeling the pink vibes, captioning her video, “Ate this bob down.

  • Music Review: Ice Spice flexes her flow on brief debut album, ‘Y2K!’

Music Review: Ice Spice flexes her flow on brief debut album, ‘Y2K!’

    [ad_1]

Virality, it could be assumed, is a gift and a curse.

Hit big online and channel that momentum into mainstream appeal, then the work comes: How does an artist sustain success? Ice Spice, the laidback Bronx rapper born Isis Naija Gaston with the too-cool-for-school, lackadaisical flow and the bright orange curls now iron straight, knows a thing or two about the topic. First came the raunchy “Munch (Feelin’ U),” with its delightful dismissal of “You thought I was feeling you?” (the song inspired the name of her fanbase, who are called Munchkins). Then there was the effortless, SpongeBob SquarePants-referencing “Bikini Bottom.”

Her 2023 debut EP, “Like..?,” produced by her longtime collaborator RiotUSA, only further confirmed her talents; “Boy’s a Liar, Pt. 2” with U.K. hyperpop-garage producer-artist PinkPantheress became the song of the summer. Hell, even Taylor Swift tapped her for a remix of her hit “Karma.” Ice Spice, in two short years, has become a four-time Grammy nominee — and one of the most divisive names in mainstream rap — before she even released an album.

“Y2K!” is Ice Spice’s first full-length project, but don’t expect an introduction. (The title functions in that way, sort of: Ice Spice was born on Jan. 1, 2000, perhaps emblematic of her aesthetic ideology and prescience for her future, social media-indebted success. It is hard to think of another MC that better encapsulates the current moment.) At the core of “Y2K!” are her immediately quotable — and let’s be honest here, meme-able — booty-shaking bars, ripe for internet consumption. And so are the cheeky hooks that made her household name.

A few songs directly recall the Ice Spice listeners have grown to know: Like “Think U the S—- (Fart),” which leans into her characteristic playfulness while maintaining her necessary bravado. “Think you the s—-?” Ice Spice recites in the chorus. “You not even the fart.” Or “Gimme A Light,” which samples Sean Paul’s dancehall classic “Gimme the Light.”

Across the release’s 23-minute run time, drill is still a priority, as she mentions on “Gimme A Light”: “Let’s talk drill / Who bigger than she?” she posits. Brevity is also a strong suit of Ice Spice’s — she understands modern attention spans and she cuts the fat across the album.

Previously released single “Phat Butt” might’ve been the clearest tease of some new sonic explorations in the world of Ice Spice, still one indebted to Nicki Minaj. She launches into a quick nod to Minaj’s “Beez in the Trap” in the intro (“Uh, Man”) and works in a sample of the 2005 hit “I Think They Like Me” by rap group Dem Franchize Boyz with Jermaine Dupri, Da Brat and Bow Wow. Closer “TTYL” sees Ice Spice raising her voice for a rare rap-rock kiss-off. Standout “BB Belt” is bed-squeaking Jersey Club.

The 10-track release uses collaborations sparingly: the self-referential, trap “Oh Shhh…” with Travis Scott, nods back to “Deli” in certain lyrics, the hard-hitting “Bitch I’m Packin’” with Gunna, and the infidelity-revenge anthem “Did It First,” brings the hottest contemporary rapper, Central Cee.

Across “Y2K!”, Ice Spice flexes her lackadaisical flow and traverses new territory, pushing her voice in subtle moments — if only there were more. If anything, this is the New York rapper further manicuring her distinctiveness, offering listeners a hot, short and sweet album.

Ice Spice Insists She & Nicki Minaj Are ‘Good’ After Calling Her ‘Delusional’ In Leaked Texts, Says She Has ‘No Issue’ With Latto

Ice Spice is setting the record straight on her relationships with her fellow rap girls.

    Source: John Nacion / Getty

During her recent cover story for Rolling Stone, the “Princess Diana” rapper touched on all the topics fans have been wondering about in recent months.

As highlighted in RS’s story, text messages Ice Spice sent to a former friend surfaced online earlier this year. In the texts, Ice Spice admitted to being frustrated while negotiating contract details with Nicki Minaj. Because of those hardships, she referred to her “Barbie World” collaborator as “delusional” and “ungrateful.”

Neither rapper acknowledged the leak when it happened, causing Internet rumors about their once seemingly-close relationship to run amok. Now Ice is setting the record straight.

“We don’t have the closest relationship, you know? But we’re definitely good,” Ice Spice told Rolling Stone of her friendship with Minaj. “We’re mutuals. We had smash records together…I love us together. I think the world does too.”

Unsurprisingly, the relationship between Ice and the friend who leaked those texts did suffer.

“I think that the saddest part of the whole situation, it’s somebody I knew for so many years and called my friend had me open up and be vulnerable with them, and then took complete advantage of that for her own benefit,” the rapper said. “So that was the saddest part really, just feeling used, basically.”

Elsewhere in her interview, the Bronx native also touched on her rumored beef with Latto and other women in the rap game.

“I just feel like that narrative is so dead,” Ice said of drama between female rappers. “There are so many rap girls that have just done so many big things simultaneously. It’s not like one or the other. There’s so many different flavors to choose from now.”

When speaking on Latto, specifically, the “Deli” rapper insists there’s no problem—at least, not on her part.

“I feel like if we ever spoke and I asked her, ‘What’s the issue?’ it’d be like a blank stare,” Ice says. “It’d really be no issue whatsoever. Especially from me.”

While referring to Latto seemingly dissing her with a cake referencing one of Ice Spice’s songs, she calls it a joke that the other rapper has tried to milk for too long.

“I can understand a friendly competition, but I just feel like at this point it’s a joke that she’s just dragged out, and it’s just not even funny,” Ice told Rolling Stone. “Like, bro, ‘Think U the S**t’ is from January. You’re going to post a piece of shit cake to announce something that’s good news for you? But it is kind of a compliment because you’re taking something that’s supposed to be a fun moment for you and you’re making it about me … again.”

  • Your Weekend Playlist: New Music To Listen To This Friday

Your Weekend Playlist: New Music To Listen To This Friday

    [ad_1]

It’s almost absurd that we’re in the middle of July as I write this. I have friends groaning that the summer is over already, which is completely and wholly untrue in my eyes. But enough with the mourning, this article is about happiness (among other things.)

There’s something about the looming weekend that gets me overly excited. It may be because I don’t have to set an alarm for work, or even look at my laptop…but there’s another, very prevalent reason as to why I love Fridays (and you should, too): new music is released every weekend.

So yes, summer Fridays are amazing, but when you top it off with the promise of new music…you can’t go wrong. During the summer, everyone’s a bit more active- and that includes musicians. There are live performances galore, and every artist is dropping a song in hopes of winning the coveted “Song of the Summer” title.

And with the summer not even close to over, a brand new song of the summer could emerge at any given moment. So, that’s where I come in. On Fridays, I round up all of the new music released each week that’s worth listening to. That way, you don’t have to do all the work searching through playlist after playlist of new music to show your friends.

In the words of Sabrina Carpenter in her #1 hit single, “Please, Please, Please”: “I know I have good judgement, I know I have good taste.” I’ve found the best new music released July 12, 2024 and I’m nice enough to share. So, let’s get listening!

    Teddy Swims- “Danger”

Teddy Swims is another up-and-coming artist who shouldn’t be counted out too early. He’s already hit the jackpot with “Lose Control,” but “Danger” is an impeccable follow up that deserves equal hype. It’s catchy, sexy, and makes you want to dance. It’s soulful in all the right places, with a sprinkle of pop and jazz.

My favorite on this playlist this weekend.

    John Summit, Paige Cavell- “Tears”

John Summit has just released his debut album, Comfort in Chaos, amidst the summer of house music. He’s on of the leading names in electronic music right now- pushing boundaries and making headlines for his groundbreaking sets. With an innate ability to make hit after hit, John Summit is here with “Tears”- which I can already hear on every rooftop in NYC this summer.

Alesso, Nate Smith- “I Like It”

It’s certainly a country summer, and it’s also a summer of house music…so why not blend the two? That’s exactly what Alesso and Nate Smith do with “I Like It.” It’s an easy collaboration that can get your group dancing in no time. With Alesso’s ability to create an upbeat backtrack and Nate Smith’s satisfying country sound, “I Like It” will be on replay for you all summer.

Lexa Gates- “I Just Can’t Be Alone”

Queens native Lexa Gates embodies the New York spirit in her music through passionate, hard-hitting lyrics. Her voice is full of personality and soul, and she’s garnering attention for her music being both authentic and relatable. With a deep, soulful vibe, Gates is an exciting rising star who deserves for her voice to be celebrated.

“I Just Can’t Be Alone” is quintessential Gates: jazzy, smooth, rich vocals with insightful lyrics that build throughout the song. Her music and sound is entirely unique, which makes Gates so exciting to listen to.

    keshi- “Say”

You may already know keshi- who captured the hearts of fans by bearing his soul in his music. He’s gearing up to release his sophomore album, Requiem, in September by dropping the first single: “Say.” “Say” is a complete vibe, a soft rock feel mixed with groove.

One of the best songs on the playlist this week, if “Say” is a glimpse into Requiem, there’s a lot to look forward to.

Ice Spice, Central Cee- “Did It First”

Ice Spice’s rapid rise to fame shows no signs of slowing down as she gears up to release Y2K!, her highly anticipated debut album. Her rap style is catchy, amassing huge amounts of streams on Spotify and making her one of TikTok’s favorite artists. “Did It First” is another addition to Ice Spice’s already prolific discography.

It’s fiery, worming its way into your brain from the moment you press play.

    Eminem- “Somebody Save Me”

An apology (and love) letter to his children and family members he hurt due to addiction, Eminem provides his classic rap flow mixed with introspective lyricism. It’s an incredibly sad, yet beautiful rap that gives you a peek into the past few years of Eminem’s life and his struggles with addiction.

Ahead of his album, The Death of Slim Shady, “Somebody Save Me” is haunting in the best way.

    SALEKA- “Save Me”

Although SALEKA plays popstar Lady Raven in M. Night Shyamalan’s newest thriller, TRAP, she’s also one in real life. As she releases the soundtrack for the film, the newest installment is equally impressive. The entire album, LADY RAVEN, was composed, produced, and performed entirely by SALEKA herself.

Her musical prowess is impressive, and “Save Me” exhibits her vocal ability perfectly. Someone who should be recognized beyond this film, SALEKA is a threat in the industry.

  • Best and Worst Saturday Night Live Musical Performances

Best and Worst Saturday Night Live Musical Performances

    [ad_1]

Saturday Night Live is the Mecca for sketch comedy. Some of our favorite actors and comedians launched their careers at Lorne Michaels’ long-running
SNL – Kristen Wiig, Jason Sudeikus, Andy Samberg, Bill Hader, Kate McKinnon, Maya Rudolph, John Mulaney, Jimmy Fallon, Pete Davidson, I could go on…

And while your preferred comedians probably got their start in the writer’s room at 30 Rock, don’t forget the live musical guest. Being invited to play on
SNL is one of the biggest honors in a musician’s career.

There’s something about being on that stage that tells you about who an artist truly is…if they can sing live or not…if they have any stage presence. The
SNL musical guest’s performance is often a topic of discussion on social media – it’s a terrific venue for teasing new music, growing your following, and showing what you’re made of.

But many stars find themselves floundering on the elusive
Saturday Night Live stage. The platform has the catapult to an artist into the stratosphere…and the gig can sometimes go south and be tough to watch.

After Sabrina Carpenter’s show-stopping superstar performance, it got me thinking about the Ghosts of
SNL’s Musical Guests Past. Not every act feels like a professional, well-rounded concert.

So, while some shine and others flop, here are our picks for the Best and Worst
    SNL Musical Performances!

    WORST:

    Ice Spice

Oh, how I wanted this performance to go differently. A lot of the time, I fear Ice Spice may lack the star-quality, It Factor when it comes to live performances. This is just one of those examples.

    21 Savage

21 chanting “redrum” over and over almost had me fast-forwarding through the whole thing. If I were in the audience, his flat, monotonous performance would’ve been even more difficult to endure – despite 21’s attempt to class it up with a pair of sad ballet dancers.

    Kanye West feat. Lil Pump

This is genuinely hilarious if you don’t take it seriously. Confession: I’m smiling as I write this. It reminds me of when you’re 8 years old and you perform with your cousin for the whole family.

    Lana Del Rey

I love Lana so it hurts me to include this…but this was a tough watch. She shows signs of promise, but it’s pitchy and all over the place. Her first real performance was riddled with nerves, but thankfully Coachella was a redemption.

    Ashlee Simpson

I mean, you knew it was coming. As Ashlee lip-synced her way through her performance, disaster struck when the vocals fell out of sync. She walks off stage mid-song, but the band plays on – it’s literally like watching
The Titanic as the boat goes down.

    BEST:

    Taylor Swift

The “All Too Well (10-Minute Version)” performance will
always be iconic. In her fifth appearance on the show, Swift only performed one song and it was this 10-minute masterpiece.

    Sabrina Carpenter

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfiOn7_aJ0k

    Talk about utilizing the stage!
Finally someone makes SNL feel like a concert and not a beat poetry session. A spectacular performance all around – no notes!

    Tate McRae

Bring back popstars with dance routines! Tate McRae’s viral
SNL act was high-energy and captivating. She nails her vocals while slaying that dance number flawlessly.

    Harry Styles

There was nothing more iconic than when Harry Styles dropped “Watermelon Sugar” during his
SNL double-header. It was the first time the world heard the song, and instantaneously made it the hit song of the summer.

    Billie Eilish

    Billie’s debut album,
WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP WHERE DO WE GO? was critically acclaimed and shot her to super-super-superstardom. Her SNL performance solidified that she can sing on any stage and shine.

The night featured epic performances and heartfelt speeches from talented titans across genres.

Smoking hot hit-maker Tems almost stole the show before it even started, making the crowd go wild on the red carpet. When she bent over to show off her killer curves in the now-viral video, a man couldn’t help but lose his composure. He seemingly time-traveled back at least a few decades, yelling “Holy smokes!” over the clamoring and camera clicks.

After setting the red carpet ablaze, Tems moved the audience with her performance of “Not An Angel.” Whew, Tems may not be an angel, but “goddess” sounds about right.

Super Bowl: Taylor Swift cheers as she watches Travis Kelce and Chiefs play 49ers

    [ad_1]

LAS VEGAS — Taylor Swift has made it to the Super Bowl. Over an hour before kickoff, Swift was spotted speaking with Philadelphia Eagles’ center Jason Kelce and later, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in a private box at Allegiant Stadium.

Swift completed her epic trip from the Tokyo Dome to Allegiant Stadium for the Super Bowl on Sunday, walking through security along with friends Blake Lively, Ice Spice and her mom, Andrea Swift, to watch the Kansas City Chiefs play the San Francisco 49ers.

Super Bowl LVIII live updates: San Francisco 49ers lead Chiefs 10-3 at halftime

The 14-time Grammy-winner, who has been dating Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce since the first few weeks of the NFL season, flew across nine time zones and the international date line from her Eras Tour to arrive about two hours before kickoff.

In the middle of Post Malone’s performance of “America the Beautiful,” cameras cut to Swift and Lively holding each other and enjoying the performance. She danced when the Chiefs won the coin toss.

Swift walked in wearing a black outfit with a red jacket slung over her shoulder, apparently getting the memo from Kelce and many of the Chiefs. He wore a shimmering black suit, quarterback Patrick Mahomes wore a sharp black suit of his own, and even Chiefs coach Andy Reid wore a black blazer as the Chiefs leaned into the villain role in which they have been cast.

There has been plenty of Taylor Swift on the big screens of Allegiant Stadium, and during the last timeout, cameras caught her in a race to chug what appeared to be a beer in her suite.

Swift was the first to finish, and she triumphantly slammed the cup down as the video cut away to other fans. But not before an appreciative roar rippled through the stadium.

If only the Chiefs were able to move the ball as successfully as she downed her drink. Their offense has gone nowhere in the first half of their Super Bowl showdown with the 49ers.

“Anti-Hero” also happens to be the lead single from Swift’s Grammy-winning album, “Midnights.”

“She’s unbelievable. She’s rewriting the history books herself,” Kelce said after the Grammys last Sunday. “I told her I’ll have to hold up my end of the bargain and come home with hardware, too.”

Swift wrapped up the last of four shows in Japan on Saturday night, then hopped a private plane at Haneda Airport for a flight across the Pacific Ocean. She landed in Los Angeles on Saturday afternoon – the time change worked in her favor – before Swift headed on to Las Vegas, where so many high-rollers had arrived that parking for private planes was entirely booked up.

Swift began dating Kelce after he said on his “New Heights” podcast that he had tried and failed to give her a friendship bracelet during her performance at Arrowhead Stadium. Kelce then invited her to watch him perform at the home of the Chiefs, and she surprisingly showed up for their Week 2 game against Chicago.

Swift soon became a regular at games, both home and away, frequently sitting with Brittany Mahomes, the wife of Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Swift occasionally brought along friends, including Lively and Ryan Reynolds.

“Having Taylor as a new Chiefs fan is very unique,” Chiefs owner Clark Hunt told a small group of reporters. “I don’t ever do an interview without someone asking me about it. I think a lot of players and coaches on the team are in the same boat. The most important thing is we’re happy for the two of them that they have found each other and have such a special relationship.”

There was plenty of star power besides Swift for the NFL’s marquee night. Usher is performing the halftime show, and was rumored to have several guests planned, while Post Malone and Reba McEntire performed before the game.

PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Can Taylor Swift make it to the 2024 Super Bowl from Tokyo to watch Travis Kelce?

Few were to be under a brighter spotlight than Swift, though. Her dash from the Tokyo Dome, where she promised fans that “we’re all gonna go on a great adventure,” had Swifties around the world watching online flight trackers, while her boyfriend seemed to get as many questions about his relationship as the game during the run-up to kickoff.

Asked to explain the intense interest, Kelce replied: “I think the values we stand for and just who we are as people – we love to shine light on others, shine light on the people that help and support us, and on top of that, I think we both just love life.”

Kelce and Swift won’t have a whole lot of time together, regardless of how the game plays out.

After winning a record-breaking fourth album of the year award at the Grammys for “Midnights,” announcing her next album will drop in April and attending the Super Bowl, Swift is due back across the Pacific later this week. The international leg of her Eras Tour resumes Friday night with the first of three shows at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

“This week is truly the best kind of chaos,” she posted Wednesday on Instagram.

  • 2024 Grammy Awards Recap

    2024 Grammy Awards Recap

    [ad_1]

The 66th annual Grammy Awards were last night at the Crypto.com Arena in the not-so-sunny Los Angeles, California. As storms raged outside the arena, I tuned in for close to five hours of red carpet coverage and the sparkling ceremony to watch music’s biggest night and make my own judgments.

At some points agonizing, the Grammys truly take their time. Packing performance after performance, people going well over their speech time, and leaving the main awards for the very end can feel never-ending. However, this year’s Grammy Awards had everything: Taylor Swift announcing a brand new album, Tortured Poet’s Department, Miley Cyrus getting her first two Grammy’s and delivering iconic speeches and performances, nods to Barbie, a visit from Celine Dion and a few controversial decisions.

I mean, even Jay-Z took a shot at the Recording Academy for not giving Beyonce any Album of the Year awards despite having the most nominations. Taylor Swift brought Lana Del Rey on stage while accepting Album of the Year for Midnights to recognize how many artists’ sounds Del Rey’s influenced despite never having won a nomination. The Academy gets it wrong, and often.

Who Won At The 2024 Grammys?

Here are some winners from a few of the main categories, including the top four awards…And may I add that some of my predictions were spot on?

Record of the Year: “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus

Album of the Year: Midnights by Taylor Swift

Song of the Year: “What Was I Made For” by Billie Eilish and FINNEAS

    Best New Artist: Victoria Monet

Producer of the Year: Jack Antonoff

Best Pop Solo Performance: “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus

Best Pop Duo Performance: “Ghost in the Machine” by SZA and Phoebe Bridgers

Best Pop Vocal Album: Midnights by Taylor Swift

Best Pop Dance Recording: “Padam Padam” by Kylie Minogue

Best Rock Performance: “Not Strong Enough” by boygenius

Best Country Album: Bell Bottom Country by Lainey Wilson

Best R&B Song: “Snooze” by SZA

Who Should’ve Won At The 2024 Grammys?

The Grammy Awards are decided by the Academy- a group of voters within the music industry who I sometimes think forget to listen to the music of the nominees. It’s why Jay-Z spoke up while receiving the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award, it is quite shocking that Beyonce has never won Album of the Year.

While everyone at the Grammy’s deserves their awards, multiple artists got onstage to say this is not what they make music for. Artists like Miley Cyrus said she felt this happy yesterday because she’s doing it for herself. Taylor Swift thanks her fans, and says she’s happiest when making songs and doing what she loves…but sometimes, the awards gods are fickle.

Olivia Rodrigo’s “Vampire” went home empty-handed, which was another surprise. While GUTS may not be my favorite work of Rodrigo’s, “Vampire” was a chart-topping, viral song that I truly thought would win something. SZA’s SOS album was on top of the Billboard Hot 100 every week but failed to receive a mention in the top categories like Album of the Year.

Lana Del Rey, who’s been nominated upwards of 10 times and wrote one of the best albums in the culmination of her already iconic discography with Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Boulevard? Received zero awards throughout the night. In a controversial move, Taylor Swift brought her up on stage so the world can recognize all Lana’s done.

In the Best New Artist category, Ice Spice and Noah Kahan were betting favorites to win…but ultimately, it went to Victoria Monét.

The Best Performances From The Grammys

    Miley Cyrus

@mileycyrus♬ original sound – Miley Cyrus

It’s been years since Cyrus has graced any sort of stage, and she didn’t disappoint. Every bit as honest, exciting, and a true rockstar as she’s ever been, Miley Cyrus is one-of-a-kind. From chiding the audience for not singing along to celebrating her first Grammy win during her performance of “Flowers”, you could tell that Miley just wanted to have fun.

She even shared she was doing this performance so she could watch clips of it later…and also admitted to foregoing underwear. It was fun, carefree, and exactly how these award shows should be.

    Joni Mitchell

You may wonder how someone with as illustrious a career as Joni Mitchell has never performed at the Grammy’s. Singing a song she wrote at 21 years old, over half a century later, “Both Sides Now” was both moving and refreshing. She’s won nine Grammy’s herself, nominated 18 times, and has inspired the sounds of our favorite artists.

She took folk music and made it her own, and after having to re-learn how to talk (and sing) from a brain aneurysm, no one is more well-respected in the industry than Mitchell.

    Luke Combs + Tracy Chapman

Luke Combs’ cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” dominated the charts this year. One of the most highly covered songs in the world, and Luke Combs put his country spin on it to create a beautiful, acoustic version. It feels almost entirely his own, but his performance with OG Tracy Chapman shows that music is, indeed, art.

The song itself is a timeless classic, with Luke Combs being one of the most talented country vocalists in the game right now and Tracy Chapman reminding us the deep roots of the song.

Universal Pulls Licensed Music From TikTok, Leaving Many to Watch Silent Taylor Swift Videos

    [ad_1]

Olivia Rodrigo’s music was pulled from TikTok today after the short-form video platform fell out with Universal Music Group. Vivien Killilea/Getty Images for Lionsgate

Today (Feb. 1), Universal Music Group (UMG), which houses megastars like Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo, officially removed its artists’ music from TikTok after its licensing agreement with the short-form video platform expired and the two companies failed to reach an agreement on artist royalties. TikTok users can no longer use UMG artists’ licensed songs in their videos.

UMG published an open letter to TikTok on Jan. 30 accusing the platform of underpaying its artists and allowing A.I.-generated songs that mimic the vocals of famous artists like Drake to thrive on the app. TikTok responded with a harsh statement alleging UMG has “put their own greed above the interests of their artists and songwriters.”

According to TikTok, 88 percent of its users believe that music is essential to the platform’s experience. In order to work better with the major music labels, who are oftentimes at odds with TikTok, the social platform created the TikTok Commercial Music Library to house licensed music from labels like UMG for creators to use in their videos. But UMG said TikTok only accounts for only 1 percent of the music conglomerate’s revenue “despite its massive and growing user base, rapidly rising advertising revenue and increasing reliance on music-based content.”

Some sounds are still available to hear, but not for use. On Ariana Grande’s TikTok account, for example, the official version of her new single “Yes, Andcan still be played. But when you click on the sound, a message pops up saying the “copyright owner hasn’t made the sound available in your country.” Many other sounds have disappeared completely, as in this Taylor Swift video and this Ice Spice video.

It’s unclear how much the actual user experience will shift without UMG music. Many licensed songs by UMG artists that become popular on TikTok also include concert footage, live renditions and snippets of their songs that may not be pulled. Remixes of UMG artist’s songs made by regular TikTok users like this one posted by Olivia Rodrigo are also popular on the platform and are often beloved as much as the original versions.

  • Too Early 2024 Grammy Predictions

    Too Early 2024 Grammy Predictions

    [ad_1]

The end of the year calls for reflection — hence our 2023 Popdust Music Awards, celebrating all of the great music we heard last year. And now, the beginning of the year indicates a time of anticipation. For that, we have our
2024 Artists to Watch, which also means that Awards Season is right around the corner.

Starting with the Golden Globes on January 7, we are about to experience countless red carpet shots, couples debuts (
still waiting for you, Sabrina Carpenter and Barry Keoghan), and teary-eyed acceptance speeches.

While there are the BAFTAs, the Emmys, the Oscars, and the SAG Awards, my speciality is music. And there is no bigger mecca for musicians than
the GRAMMY Awards. Held on February 4, 2024, and hosted by comedian Trevor Noah, the GRAMMYs are music’s biggest night.

Awards Season brings out everyone’s inner critic. Suddenly, we think we know more than the Recording Academy. Every year, there are viral moments and scandalous decisions. The Recording Academy ultimately outrages the general public in some way or another — and inevitably, fandoms will take to apps like X to become the next Joan Rivers.

It’s a delicious time of year when your favorite celebrities are forced out of hiding and into the spotlight, and we can’t wait. To get everyone in the spirit of judgment, here are
some way-too-early GRAMMY predictions for the year!

Record Of The Year: “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus

Any Kid Harpoon song is a classic, and Cyrus’ return from a brief hiatus from music was met with high marks. It was Spotify’s most streamed song in a week ever, spent time at the top of Billboard’s Hot 100, and was the fastest song in Spotify history to reach 1 billion streams.

Album Of The Year: Midnights by Taylor Swift

She’s won this coveted award three times already, and it’s impossible to discredit the year of Taylor Swift. She is on track for the highest-grossing tour of all time with the Eras Tour, Midnights is Apple Music’s biggest pop album of all time in terms of first-day streaming, and the album is the reason she was all 10 of Billboard’s Top 10 Songs (the first time all women have dominated the charts ever). Give Swift her flowers.

Song Of The Year: “A&W” by Lana Del Rey

Another Jack Antonoff production, Lana Del Rey’s album is a spiritual awakening. With an essence of transcendentalism and a hint of gospel, it’s Lana to her core. “A&W” is hailed Song of the Year by many already, and it’s time we recognize her for the artist she is, was, and always will be.

    Best New Artist: Ice Spice

I haven’t seen many people rise to the top as quickly as Ice Spice, nor have I seen someone garner such a passionate fanbase. The rapper has hits like “Deli” and collabs with rap queen Nicki Minaj on “Barbie World” and Taylor Swift on “Karma”, not to mention her Munchkin drink at Dunkin Donuts.

Producer Of The Year (Non-Classical): Jack Antonoff

Not only is Antonoff the mastermind behind many Taylor Swift albums, including Midnights, but he has Lana Del Rey’s multi-nominated album, “Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Boulevard?,” under his belt. He can’t miss, and for that, he wins.

Best Pop Solo Performance: “What Was I Made For? [From The Major Motion Picture Barbie]”

This song is stunning, productionally perfect, and sonically flawless. Billie and Finneas continue to grow as an unstoppable singer-songwriter duo who can make any song fit any moment.

Best Pop Vocal Album: GUTS by Olivia Rodrigo

Olivia Rodrigo wanted to have fun with her sophomore album following the immense pressure and success of her debut, SOUR. With GUTS, we had viral singles yet again that promise Rodrigo is here for the long haul.

Best Dance/Electronic Recording: “Strong” by Romy + Fred again…

Developing a cult following in the electronic music world, Fred again… is one of the hottest house dance artists in the world right now. Following a successful bout of live shows and reaching fans on almost every platform imaginable, “Strong” is a winner.

Best Pop Dance Recording: “Rush” by Troye Sivan

Troye Sivan understands how to make out-of-the-box pop music, and seals it with one hell of a dance number. He’s the embodiment of a popstar, and “Rush” was just an example of the high precedent he’s set.

Best Rock Performance: “Not Strong Enough” by boygenius

Compiled of Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus, boygenius is a supergroup showing the world how to rock again. “Not Strong Enough” showcases what each member brings to the group in one sound synergy.

Best Rock Album: Starcatcher by Greta Van Fleet

Hailed as The Next Led Zeppelin, Greta Van Fleet brings you on a journey with their Starcatcher album. Each song a delight, Greta Van Fleet has developed their sound and found their stride.

Best R&B Performance: “Kill Bill” by SZA

SOS is one of the best albums of the year, and while I don’t see it winning in the Big 4 due to competitors like Swift, I still think it wins in general. “Kill Bill” was one of the biggest songs and continues to be one of the most viral.

Best Rap Performance: “Rich Flex” by Drake & 21 Savage

The saying “I like what Drake likes” holds true for many…and the collaboration album, Her Loss, with 21 Savage was one of the biggest of the year. “Rich Flex” makes sense for two of the biggest rappers out there right now.

Best Rap Album: Heroes & Villains by Metro Boomin’

Metro Boomin’ is the rapper and producer responsible for countless hits like Migos’ “Ric Flair Drip”. His Heroes & Villains album is a masterclass for high quality rap, intricate detail in production and songwriting, and straight up hits.

Popdust’s End Of Year Music Awards 2023

    [ad_1]

With the holiday season in full fa-la-la-la-flow, it’s time to reflect. When the year winds down, we feel a bit of burn out — you stare blankly at screens without motivation, you don’t want to work, and you’ve just spent all your money on gift giving.

The year ends in two weeks, which means all of your social media accounts are wrapping up the past 365 days and holding a mirror up to who you truly are. For Snapchat users, you get a montage of photos and videos from those embarrassing nights out and the time you took a selfie crying.

At Popdust, we’ve always loved music. It’s why I have a
weekly segment rounding up popular new music and it’s why we report on so many of your most favorite artists. We’re constantly searching for the next big thing in music. And 2023 was massive for changing the soundscapes we know and love.

For instance, country folk was the breakout genre of the year thanks to artists like Zach Bryan and Noah Kahan. Popular DJ’s like John Summit and Dom Dolla have driven a surge in popularity of house music. We’ve seen Taylor Swift take over the world, alongside rapidly rising stars like Ice Spice and SZA.

With the recent announcement of the GRAMMY Award nominees, it’s never too early to hold our
own award ceremony to celebrate all of the awesome music released this year. The Popdust Music Awards are for all of those 2024 hitmakers who gave us viral moments, graced our speakers, and made us sing along.

That includes celebrating Taylor Swift, our Artist Of The Year, whose
Eras Tour is the highest-grossing tour of all time at $1 billion to date! Her album, Midnights, alongside re-releases like 1989 (Taylor’s Version) and Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) were chart-toppers in their own right. Consistently breaking records like dominating the Billboard Top 10, Swift deserves her flowers.

And speaking of flowers, Miley Cyrus is having a huge year with her new album,
Endless Summer Vacation. “Flowers” is our Viral Song of the Year, only taking 112 days to reach Spotify’s Billions Club, the quickest in the app’s history.

There are plenty of artists to celebrate in 2023, which means 2024’s gonna be a truly thrilling year coming up. Here are some of Popdust’s favorite artists and albums from 2023!

Your 2023 Spotify Wrapped Is Ready

    [ad_1]

Every year around December, excitement grows for reasons other than the holiday season. Yes, we all come together to celebrate the release of our
Spotify Wrapped– and what a glorious, joyous time it is for many. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to expose which type of person you are: an Apple Music user or a Spotify user.

Spotify Wrapped can teach you a lot about yourself and others. It reveals the top artists, albums, and songs both globally and in the United States, as well as your own individualized playlist filled with your top songs of the year. Mine, unsurprisingly is
Noah Kahan (and he occupies four of my five top songs).

It can remind you of songs you swore you only listened to once, and exposes you for the kind of listener you truly are. Somehow, One Direction was my top artist for years beyond their indefinite hiatus…some people never change!

    At the
Spotify Wrapped 2023 event yesterday, we got the chance to answer all of your questions for this year’s Wrapped! Let’s dive in.

When Can I See My Spotify Wrapped 2023?

In one of the greatest rivalries of all time, Apple Music released their Wrapped dupe called Replay a day earlier than Spotify…but today, November 29, is when your
2023 Spotify Wrapped graces the app.

@trendpr Spotify Wrapped is trying some new things this year 👀 #2023spotifywrapped #spotifywrapped #2023wrapped ♬ My Love Mine All Mine – Mitski

What’s New To Spotify Wrapped This Year?

This year’s theme was “Wrapped, Or It Didn’t Happen.” In a world of
AI, Spotify wanted to celebrate what’s real: embracing the real moments you experience through music. They wanted to encapsulate the year we’ve had as listeners, so we can appreciate the different cultures and sounds that have been brought to us.

You’ll see more moving parts during the campaign, with bolder colors, bigger digital productions across the world. But there’s more to your Wrapped than just a special playlist based on your listening data. For the first time, you’ll be able to view it on your computer as well.

One of the newest feature is Me, In 2023, where you’re assigned one of twelve listening personalities to tell you a bit more about yourself. For example, I’m an Alchemist, which means I create more playlists and listen to them more than the average user. This, obviously, is not shocking as I curate a
    Weekend Playlist for this website.

There’s also SoundTown, which matches you to a city where you’ll likely meet people who have similar music taste to you. The excitement doesn’t stop there, you’ll be able to see which month you listened to your Top 5 Artists the most and use the Blend feature to see how you and your friends match up.

  • Ice Spice’s VMAs Dress Is a Tribute to Madonna, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera

Ice Spice’s VMAs Dress Is a Tribute to Madonna, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera

    [ad_1]

Ice Spice blew a metaphorical kiss to Britney Spears, Madonna, and Christina Aguilera at the 2023 MTV VMAs on Sept. 12. In honor of the trio’s iconic performance at the VMAs exactly two decades ago, the rapper walked the red carpet in a sheer bridal dress with lacy tights and a voluminous tutu. Spice’s style team completed the elegant ensemble with silver jewelry and strappy heels with rhinestone embellishments.

Spice’s dress featured a satin corset bodice with lacy sleeves that transformed into fingerless gloves at the ends of her wrists. At the waist, the dress puffed out in either direction, boasting multiple layers of floral lace. The delicate, sheer fabric appeared again along the neckline and on both sides of the bodice, marking two large cutouts along her back. Spice kept the ornate design going with a pair of see-through tights and bedazzled sandals. Around her neck, the rapper also wore a rhinestone collar and layered chain necklaces in silver, the perfect complement to her Moon Person for best new artist.

The frilly design is a clear homage to Spears and Aguilera’s outfits at the 2003 VMAs, which in themselves were nods to Madonna’s 1984 MTV VMAs performance when she sang “Like a Virgin.” The 2003 performance began with the megastars strutting onstage to the tune of “Like a Virgin” in full wedding dresses, complete with tulle veils and flower bouquets. As the track transitioned to Madonna’s “Hollywood,” the singer emerged in a groom-inspired tuxedo look complete with a top hat. The performance — including the trio’s outfits — has since been memorialized as one of the most iconic moments in award show history.

Though Spice’s outfit looked incredible regardless of its significance, the clear homage to such a historic award show makes her ensemble that much more special. Later in the evening, she changed into a sheer maxi dress with a plunging, lace-up design that stretched down either side of her silhouette. Along the back, the ruching of the transparent fabric split at the knees, creating a subtle slit that gave a glimpse at her white pointed-toe stilettos.

Ahead, admire Spice’s sartorial tribute to Spears, Aguilera, and Madonna, and take a closer look at its original inspiration.

“Ice Spice. My fans are the munchkins,” she said, suggesting: “Ice Spice Munchkins drink.”

Affleck appeared to ignore the idea, insisting: “We’ll call it Vanilla Ice spice,” before launching into a rap as the unimpressed musician stared at him.

  • Barbie, Baby!

    Barbie, Baby!

    [ad_1]

Growing up as a girl, I played with all sorts of dolls: American Girl, Bratz, Polly Pocket, and of course, Barbies. I had the Dream House, the Dream Car, the color changing mermaid, and don’t forget about Ken. But as I aged, Barbie became a bit more problematic.

Suddenly, we grew up and realized that Barbie wasn’t representing diversity (by any means) very well. She was dimensionally impossible, but she grew up as our role model! How could we spend our lives aspiring for blonde-haired, cinched-waisted, pink-loving Barbie if the girl selling the dream was unattainable?

And then there were the controversial Barbies…1965 Slumber Party Barbie had a scale set to 110 pounds and a dieting book titled “How To Lose Weight” with the advice “Don’t Eat!” Not our role model promoting eating disorder culture!

    1965 Slumber Party Barbie

    Daily Mail

Mattel was failing to realize that by making Barbie a doctor, lawyer, homeowner, extraordinaire, she truly was our role model as little girls. We were looking at these dolls potentially seeing what our future could look like. And if it meant being 110 pounds to have the Dream Car, that sends the opposite message.

But there is no one I have more faith in than Greta Gerwig to do the injustices of Barbie justice. We have just under one month until Gerwig’s
Barbie movie releases into theaters…on the same day as Christopher Nolan’s polar opposite Oppenheimer, which has started its own collection of memes for a double-header day.

Barbie has already stolen the hearts of social media with perhaps the best marketing we’ve seen for a movie in a long time (barring the accidental chaos marketing of Don’t Worry Darling). We’ve gotten picturesque stills of BarbieLand, the Architectural Digest tour of the Dream House, hilarious trailers, and of course the iconic movie posters. The main message of the posters? Barbie (Margot Robbie) is everything, and he’s just Ken (Ryan Gosling).

From the trailer we can tell that Barbie lives in her pink world with other Barbies and Kens, like Dua Lipa being Mermaid Barbie. But one day when Barbie throws her party (complete with synchronized dance and bespoke song), she lets a thought out:
“Do you guys ever think about dying?” Party halts.

Now that she’s contempating her mortality, things for Barbie become less than perfect: her heels touch the ground (gag) and she falls off her roof (gasp)..So she’s given a choice: return to her world (presented as a high heel) or go to the Real World and figure out what life’s really about (presented as a worn out Birkenstock). Unfortunately for Barbie, she has to choose the latter.

    In BarbieLand, she explains, “
Basically everything men do in your world, women do in ours.” As for the Kens? “I honestly don’t know.” If you can tell the theme of this film so far, it’s that women are running the show.

But what Greta Gerwig gets right with
Barbie so far is that BarbieLand is impractical. In the Architectural Digest tour, Margot Robbie shows us how the pool is fake because there are no elements in Barbie’s world. She showers without water, has a fridge filled with decal food, and a lot, she admits with a laugh, is “not super practical, but nothing is for Barbie.”

The success of the movie already is proving to be major. With Ryan Gosling’s fierce dedication to being Ken, you find it hard
not to root for this movie in the box office. He’s given us quotes like “If you really cared about Ken, you would know that nobody cared about Ken” and coined the term “Ken-ergy.”

On Jimmy Fallon, Gosling likened Ken to an un-cool accessory, saying that nobody really ever played with a Ken doll. “
I was surprised how…some people were clutching their pearls about my Ken, as though they ever thought about Ken for a second. They never played with Ken! Nobody ever plays with Ken.”

And we’ve already seen the blazing hot pink merchandise that has scattered stores. You can buy Barbie-inspired satin pillowcases, Barbie glassware, Barbie cookware. Our lives are suddenly immersed in our picturesque Barbie DreamWorld,
but this time with a grown-up twist.

We’re no longer emulating the Barbie look, per-se…but the Barbie Dream. It’s about female empowerment and uplifting others, becoming successful in your own way, and loving the color pink always. It’s more of the Barbie mindset than the Barbie body.

With a star-studded cast consisting of Will Ferrell, Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, Emma Mackey, Kate McKinnon, and more…and an equally studded soundtrack with features from Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice, Dua Lipa, Ava Max, Charli XCX, Khalid, Lizzo, etc. This movie radiates power.

As a lover of all things pink, I’m here for the Barbie collabs. Here are my faves to get you ready for the movie of the summer:
