In what order should I layer my skin care products? Beauty experts and editors alike are constantly fielding the question (and we have the answer!), yet there’s a follow-up that throws off even the most seasoned pros: How long should I wait in between steps?
I try to refrain from calling any skin care ingredient “trendy” unless it’s actually brand-new, but it’s hard to ignore how popular players cycle through the spotlight. Niacinamide certainly received some buzz before allantoin captured our hearts—and who can forget when peptides hit the main stage?

Are you looking for the best water bottle that’s right for you?
Now that the hotter months are here, a sip of cool water can do more than just refresh us—it can also prevent dehydration.
Hydration is crucial to good health. Fortunately, having a bottle of drinking water constantly on hand has become more convenient with different water container options.
But which option is the best?
When we consider durability, preventing chemicals from leaching into our drinks, ease of cleaning, and environmental friendliness, stainless steel water bottles are the better choice (compared with plastic or glass bottles).
In this article, we feature the eleven best stainless steel water bottle brands. We’ve categorized the following products based on what’s best for kids, for traveling, for workouts, and for budget-conscious consumers.
Before introducing you to the best brands in the different categories, let’s first talk about the benefits provided by the right stainless steel water bottle.
Don’t have time to read the entire review?
If you’re a busy person who doesn’t have time to read this entire review, we’ve simplified everything. Here is a table to show you a quick rating of the best stainless steel water bottles.
The Benefits of Stainless Steel Water Bottles
Reusable water bottles are always the best option for the environment, but people are often undecided when it comes to choosing between stainless steel, glass, and plastic.
As it turns out, stainless steel water bottles have proven benefits compared to plastic and glass versions of the same bottle, so the decision is pretty easy. Let’s look at some of those benefits.
First, stainless steel prevents the leaching of harmful chemicals into your drinking water. Many plastic water bottles leach the chemicals BPA and BPS, which are harmful to your health.
BPA exposure can lead to symptoms such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance, delayed fetal brain development, and breast and prostate cancers.
As people became aware of the risks of ingesting BPA, many companies turned to BPS. However, this chemical is proving itself to be equally as dangerous as BPA in the long run. Fortunately, you can avoid these risks when you use stainless steel water bottles.
Stainless steel water bottles also discourage mold from growing. Other water bottles are prone to mold growth, but most stainless steel bottles are mold-resistant.
Plastic water bottles provide a healthy environment for the production and growth of mold around the inside of the bottle. Also, because stainless steel can be washed in the dishwasher, it makes these bottles even more resistant to all kinds of bacteria that can grow in other bottles.
Stainless steel also will not react with your drinks. Many water bottles that are not made of stainless steel react to juices or hot tea by leaching chemicals into your drink. For example, consider how a slice of lemon could interact with your plastic water bottle.
If you use lemon often, it can start to cause a reaction with the plastic’s surface, releasing chemicals into your drink that could potentially harm your health. On the other hand, stainless steel manages to preserve the flavor of your drinks while keeping chemicals away.
Unlike plastic or glass water bottles, stainless steel preserves the temperature and flavor of your drink as well. Most stainless steel water bottles come with double insulation that keeps your drink at the right temperature for much longer than their non-insulated counterparts.
Cold drinks are kept cold, and hot drinks stay hot for hours. This way, you aren’t reaching for a refreshing sip of water in the hot summer and instead of getting a mouthful of lukewarm liquid.
Also, stainless steel will not retain the flavor of yesterday’s drink. You probably use your water bottle for drinks other than water. You may also drink tea, juice, or even a morning smoothie. These bottles allow you to drink your water without interference from the leftover flavors of yesterday’s iced tea.
Finally, while you might spend more money upfront to buy a stainless steel bottle, it saves money over time. The reusability of a stainless steel bottle means you can use it several times, saving you money in the long run that you would have used to constantly buy commercial bottled water.
This reusability is also better for the environment because there is no plastic that is ending up in a landfill. The materials used in stainless steel bottles are durable options that are entirely recyclable when their lifecycle is over.
This means that your current stainless steel water bottle can be transformed into a new version of itself after you are finished with it, and can last for many more years to come.
Now that you know the benefits of choosing stainless steel for your water bottle, let’s look at some other factors to consider when you’re shopping for one.
What to Look for When Choosing a Stainless Steel Water Bottle?
Consider the capacity.
Determine where you’ll be using the water bottle (i.e., is it for work, for a weekend camping trip, or for a yoga class?). Knowing where you will be using your bottle will quickly narrow down your choices.
You should have enough water to drink during your activity, but you don’t want to bring so much water that it is a burden to carry. Are you taking your bottle on long backpacking trips where you are keeping track of the weight of your gear?
Or are you planning to take it to a yoga class, where you want it to look smooth next to your mat? Identify your needs first, then find the right bottle that fits them.
Choose an insulated bottle.
You want to find the best insulated stainless steel water bottle because these are ideal for keeping your drinks at the right temperature for longer periods of time. Insulated bottles can keep hot liquids hot for up to eight hours, and cold liquids cold for over 24 hours.
You need an insulated bottle to bring your hot drinks to work, and for when you need a cool drink when you’re outside in hot weather. Also, insulated bottles shouldn’t sweat when they’re filled with cold drinks so they won’t make a mess on your desk.
Sip or gulp.
“Ease of use” is important to consider because it involves both how you drink from the bottle and how you carry it. This is mostly determined by the type of lid, so choose the right cap option for your preference.
Benefits of Stainless Steel Water Bottles
“Ease of use” is important because it involves both how you drink from the bottle and how you carry it. Choose the right cap option for your preference.
Some brands offer accessories such as straw valves and flip caps for easier access, while others have wide mouths or screw caps. New cap designs give leave you with plenty of options to help you stay hydrated.
If you’re drinking straight from the bottle, it is easiest to use a narrow mouth, whereas wide mouths are more convenient to have in the backcountry.
Bottles with a straw lid, flip top, or spout are convenient if you’re running on a treadmill, but they are also more difficult to clean. That being said, some users prefer bottles that come with a straw for easy drinking during workouts or hiking.
Get 18/8 or #304.
This is food-grade stainless steel and is the best material for your stainless steel water bottle. 18/8 stainless steel is made up of 18% chromium and 8% nickel.
304 grade is also made up of no more than 0.8% carbon and at least 50% iron. This combination helps protect your bottle from accumulating rust. The nickel also helps the corrosion resistance of the stainless steel.
What Other Things Should I Consider When Choosing a Water Bottle?
Make sure that the bottle is made from stainless steel and not aluminum. Stainless steel and aluminum look alike, but aluminum bottles usually come with a plastic lining because the metal reacts with certain liquids.
Not only do you not want plastic in your drink, but aluminum bottles are also not dishwasher safe. Plus, while stainless steel is heavier than its aluminum counterpart, an aluminum water bottle will easily dent.
When you’re choosing insulated bottles, get the one that can keep your drinks warm or cold for the longest amount of time. The best-insulated water bottle will keep your drink at the right temperature for your entire workday. This way, you can use your bottle year-round and you won’t need multiple bottles for multiple purposes.
Another convenience to consider aside from temperature control is having a bottle that comes with a carabiner or a handle for easy transport during hikes or while traveling. This will help ensure that you don’t drop your bottle or accidentally leave it behind.
When choosing a water bottle for kids, consider getting a bottle with fun designs, and with a bottle size that they can easily grasp with their hands. The best water bottle for kids is going to be one that is not only the easiest for them to use, but that they also enjoy drinking out of.
Now that you know what you are looking for in the best water bottle brand for you, let’s look at some of the options that are on the market today.

Quick question:
Are you looking for a few simple tips how to make your body more alkaline? Or do you want to raise your pH levels?
If so, then it’s not too hard to achieve these outcomes!
In this post, you will get a comprehensive guide on how to alkalize your body. First, you’ll learn about the difference between your various pH levels. Then you will discover a simple strategy to test if your body is alkaline or acidic. Finally, you can check out the 15 tips on how to make your body more alkaline.
So you might wonder: “If I changed the foods that I ate and reduced my stress, would that make my body more alkaline?”
The simple answer is it depends.
Let’s talk about the pH levels in your body work…
Can you remember the pH scale? This scale measures how acidic or basic a substance is. If a substance is neither acidic nor basic, it is neutral. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14.
Understanding the pH Level in Your Body
Most people don’t stop to consider the acid/alkaline balance in their blood, but an optimal pH is actually crucial to one’s health. Human blood is a solution, meaning that it is made up of a uniform distribution inside a liquid.
Having a balanced pH protects our bodies from the inside out. Some even say that diseases and disorders cannot grow in a body whose pH is in balance. An imbalanced pH allows unhealthy organisms to grow, damages tissues and organs, and hurts the immune system.
The body’s optimal pH is 7.36, which is just barely alkaline.
Because most people are too acidic, it is best to focus on alkalizing the body to maintain proper health. To measure your pH, you can dip a piece of litmus paper in your saliva or urine as soon as you wake up, before eating or drinking anything.
An acidic environment in one’s body will decrease its ability to repair damaged cells and detoxify heavy metals. It also creates an environment for tumor cells to thrive, and it makes the body more susceptible to fatigue and illness.
Acidosis is more common in today’s society than it was in centuries past due to the drastic changes in our eating patterns as compared to those who came before us.
Choosing to eat more alkaline foods can help to change your pH balance. This allows your body to function at its best.
Start your day with a tall glass of water with a hint of lemon.
However, many of the foods that people love are very acidic. Eating too many acidic foods over time stresses the body’s natural functions and can leave you feeling tired and sluggish.
So, which foods are alkalizing and which are acidic? As stated, the scale goes from 0 to 14, and you want to shoot for a balanced pH of 7. Our food today is far too high in acid-producing animal products such as meat, eggs, and dairy.
Alkaline-producing foods:
spinach
broccoli
carrots
cauliflower
collard greens
strawberries
wild rice
Acid-producing processed food & drinks:
white flour
meat & eggs
sugar
chocolate
cream cheese
coffee
soft drinks
fruit juices
Neutral foods (slightly acidic):
cooked beans
coconut
salmon
Neutral foods (slightly basic):
It is far too low in alkaline-producing foods such as fresh vegetables like spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, collard greens, strawberries, and wild rice.
Additionally, we eat acid-producing processed foods such as white flour and sugar, and drink acid-producing beverages like coffee and soft drinks. Popcorn, cream cheese, chocolate, fruit juices, and nuts are all acidic foods that harm our overall health.
Some more neutral foods that are only slightly acidic include cooked beans, coconut, and salmon. On the other hand, some foods that are only slightly basic are apples, olives, and bananas.
Further, all grains, whether they are whole or not, increase acidity in the body. Many people eat most of their quota of plant food in the form of processed wheat or corn. The problem is, if you do not consume enough alkaline-promoting foods to counteract this, the body can become prone to disease.
Calcium-rich dairy products actually lead to osteoporosis because they create acidity in the body. When your bloodstream acquires too much acid, it will take calcium out of the bones because calcium is an alkaline substance.
This will then help the body balance the pH level. So while many people think that eating calcium is the key to strong bones, the best way to prevent osteoporosis is actually to eat a lot of alkaline green leafy vegetables.
The big question here is, “How can you tell if your body is too alkaline or acidic?”
The quickest way to get this information is to measure your body’s pH level by using pH level strips that you can purchase at your local pharmacy or on Amazon. However, if you don’t have these handy and you want to know where you stand now, here are some symptoms of being too alkaline or too acidic.
Symptoms of Being Too Acidic
If your body is too acidic, you are likely to experience a lot of fatigue, even if you feel as if you are getting enough sleep at night. You may also have joint pain, headaches, chronic pain, or a stiff neck.
You are likely to feel an overall sense of sluggishness, and even depression at times. Many people whose bodies are too acidic also suffer from irritability and brain fog.
Symptoms of Being Too Alkaline
This is much less common than being too acidic, but can come with equally as disturbing symptoms. People who are too alkaline may suffer from hand tremors, nausea, vomiting, confusion, lightheadedness, and muscle twitching.
If you are still not sure after looking through these symptoms, here’s a great video from Dr. Eric Berg.
15 Ways to Make Your Body More Alkaline
As you can see, there can be a lot of negative consequences if your body is too acidic. An alkaline body is hard work, but worthwhile. If you’d like to balance it by becoming more alkaline, then here are 15 tips on how to make your body more alkaline.
1. Check your pH levels regularly.
These pH strips are relatively inexpensive on Amazon. They give a fast and accurate reading of your body’s acidity and alkaline levels. The results of these test strips will help guide you in keeping your pH levels balanced so your body can properly process essential nutrients.
These strips give you a convenient method to monitor your pH levels in the privacy of your home. You can use either saliva or urine to test your pH. Results appear 15 seconds after your test is administered, and the strips come with an easy-to-read chart to see what range you are in.
2. Start your day with a tall glass of water with a hint of lemon.
Lemon might seem too acidic, but it actually has the reverse effect because it helps boost your metabolism. Clean water and a slice of freshly squeezed lemon is one of the most highly rated energy boosters of all time.
Water with lemon gives the body clean energy through both hydration and oxygenation that provide extraordinary energy and mental clarity.
When added to your water, fresh lemon helps oxygenate the body and optimize enzyme function. This fruit is known to stimulate the liver’s natural enzymes and assist the liver in the process of getting rid of toxins such as uric acid.
One habit or hack that can help you maximize your lemon water intake is to use a “smart water bottle” like HidrateSpark that tracks the amount of water you drink and lights up as a reminder to drink more.
The video below talks about other healthy morning routine habits that you should focus on the first few hours of the day.
3. Eat more dark and green vegetables.
When we think of healthy foods, we usually think about the color green. Similarly, when we think about nature, we think about the color green.
Green is a color that is associated with all of the good aspects of life, but when it comes to choosing what is for lunch, we typically have a reluctance towards green foods.
Unfortunately, our taste buds have been conditioned to love artificial flavors and sugars. Food manufacturers have made us crave intense flavors that can only be found in packaged products.
So, how can you get yourself to eat more dark and green vegetables? Start by exposing yourself to new vegetables and experimenting with them in the kitchen. You likely don’t know that you will like some of these foods until you try them.
Also, make them easily available. When you reach for a snack, make sure that you already have cut-up vegetables in the fridge rather than a bag of potato chips.
Exercise helps your body sustain and restore its neutral pH balance of tissues, as well as blood and cellular fluids. Doing aerobic exercise is the best way to maintain the acid-alkaline equilibrium in your body because it works your muscles and can help reduce the accumulation of acid in your system.
When it comes to exercising, make sure to do at least one form of activity each day, whether that is walking, dancing, gardening, swimming, etc. Also, the more you exercise, the better off your overall health will be.
Alcohol changes your pH by altering your kidneys’ ability to maintain substances such as phosphate in your blood. Imbalances of substances in the blood can significantly decrease the effectiveness of your body’s metabolism.
When you drink a light form of alcohol, like a beer, you are drinking a significant amount of water while also reducing your kidneys’ ability to get rid of that water. This results in a fluid overload and a change in phosphate levels that then decreases the acidity of your blood, making your pH level rise.
In fact, a single drink of alcohol can begin to change your normal kidney function. If your liver is already damaged from previous alcohol consumption, alcohol’s effects on your kidneys will only become more harmful.
6. Use natural baking soda.
Add a teaspoon of natural baking soda to water and drink it first thing in the morning.
Sure, this doesn’t taste so great, but is a quick way to alkalize your body. It is an easy method, and you can feel the effects of it right away. To do this, mix a teaspoon of natural baking soda in a cup of water and drink it as soon as you wake up.
Among other health benefits, drinking baking soda dissolved in a bit of water helps balance the body’s pH and promotes overall well-being while increasing energy.
7. Reduce your intake of acidic foods.
Limiting your intake of acidic foods can help manage your pH levels, help preserve bone density, prevent kidney stones, and eliminate symptoms of acid reflux.
Foods that are acid-forming in the body should be eaten in strict moderation. Some of these foods include processed cakes and breads, processed cereals, eggs, peanuts, walnuts, pasta, rice, oats, and cold cuts.
When it comes to beverages, limit your intake of alcohol, milk, caffeinated drinks, and drinks that contain artificial sweeteners.
Pasta is an acid-forming food. Eat it in strict moderation.
8. Drink more alkaline water.
You have probably heard some of the health claims that are out there about alkaline water. While a few say that it can help slow the aging process, prevent chronic disease, and regulate your body’s pH level, what exactly is the hype around alkaline water?
Alkaline water has a higher pH level than normal drinking water. Because of this, alkaline water can help neutralize the acid in your body. While normal drinking water typically has a neutral pH of 7, alkaline water has a pH of about 8 or 9.
Many of the vitamins included in a multivitamin will help you alkalize your body. For example, vitamins A and C boost the immune system and strengthen the body’s cells while also making the body more alkaline.
Vitamin D also helps the body maintain an alkaline state while also improving calcium absorption and helping the body maintain healthy mineral levels.
While you may not get enough of these important vitamins and minerals in your diet, taking a multivitamin every day can help your body maintain a healthy pH level.
10. Go for a brisk walk.
Exercise helps move any acidic waste products that are stuck in your body so your organs can eliminate them more effectively.
Snack on raw, unsalted almonds throughout the day to help combat acidity in your body. Almonds are rich in natural alkaline minerals such as calcium and magnesium, which help balance out the acidity in your body while also balancing your blood sugar.
If you feel the need to reach for some chips or cake, opt for raw, unsalted almonds instead. They will keep you fuller longer, and have a better effect on the pH of your blood.
12. Reduce your intake of sugar.
The most acidic things you can put into your body are foods that are full of sugar, such as sodas, candy, and cakes. Sugar is actually everywhere you look, in plain sight, as well as being hidden in common food items.
Products like ketchup, yogurt, and even pasta sauce are full of sugar. Sugar comes in many forms, such as high fructose corn syrup, artificial sugar, corn syrup solids, fructose, sucrose, and dextrose, just to name a few.
Sugar (in all of its forms) is very acidic. When you stop to think about how prevalent sugar is in foods (and often in high amounts), it is easy to see its influence in contributing to an imbalanced pH in the blood. Here’s an article on how to reduce your sugar intake.
13. Reduce your caffeine intake.
Caffeine is often found in coffee and other drinks that are meant to provide you with a pick-me-up. You may be used to reaching for a soda in the mid-afternoon to help get you through the day, or even an after-dinner cup of coffee to help you finish up some work at the end of the night.
However, caffeine is an acidic factor that can damage the pH of your body. Instead of drinking caffeinated drinks, replace them with either water or tea.
Drink less coffee to be less acidic.
14. Reduce the amount of stress in your life.
Studies have shown that your emotional state affects the pH levels in your body. Stress affects the neuron-endocrine system, which leads to higher levels of cortisol, a stress hormone. As is the truth with any form of stress, half of the battle is realizing that the stress is happening.
Practicing mindfulness and recognizing what is challenging you, and whether you are having a helpful or hindering response is an important part of making sure your negative thoughts don’t have a lasting effect on your body.
15. Focus on consuming lots of high-alkaline foods.
While you are avoiding foods that make your body produce more acidic, make sure to also add in foods that help your body come to a more alkaline state.
Eat a diet rich in fruits, nuts, legumes, and vegetables. Think about raw Brussels sprouts, raw Swiss chard, raw mustard greens, raw eggplant, sweet potatoes, and yams.
If you get stuck, Ross Bridgeford has a list of seven of the most alkaline foods:
Spinach
Kale
Cucumber
Broccoli
Avocado
Celery
Bell pepper
The Dangers of a Body that is Too Acidic
Think about some of the dangers of having a body that is too acidic. It can lead to fatigue, headaches, chronic pain, lack of appetite, increased heart rate, depression, and more.
Without quick treatment, acidosis can lead to several more serious health problems, such as kidney stones, chronic kidney problems, kidney failure, bone disease, and delayed growth.
The list of foods that can cause your body to become too acidic can certainly seem a bit daunting, as can their possible effects. If you are looking for a quick solution to help alkalize your body, we recommend trying one of the green juice superfood powders that are mentioned on this review page.
Final Thoughts on How to Make Your Body More Alkaline
The key to a more alkaline body isn’t about drastic changes; it’s about incorporating sustainable habits into your daily routine. Small, consistent changes in your lifestyle can have a profound impact on your body’s pH levels and overall health.
From mindful eating to staying hydrated, each choice contributes to the alkaline environment your body thrives in. Soon, you’ll experience increased vitality and energy and a renewed sense of well-being.

For many, shower routines are sacred. They serve as a grounding moment to wind down, connect with your skin, and quite literally wash away stress. It’s why many take the time to upgrade their shower aesthetic or commit to a weekly ritual that combines every possible grooming habit in one go—a buzzy concept known as the “everything” shower.
With the uptick in wearable devices hitting the market, heart rate variability (HRV) is becoming quite a hot topic. As WHOOP founder and CEO Will Ahmed shared on a recent mindbodygreen podcast episode, this powerful metric can help you understand your body’s current state at any given moment. In general, the higher or more stable your HRV score, the better. But how do you elevate your own levels?
To come, three underrated ways to raise your HRV, plus a quick refresher on why it matters.
At a glance, HRV is a measurement of how much variation between the timing of your heartbeats. Having a higher HRV is a sign you are fit, well-rested, and recovering well. Having a lower HRV means that you could be stressed, burnt out, or sick.
HRV is starkly different from resting heart rate, as the former doesn’t have one ideal range to shoot for. Instead, improvement is all about increasing your personal HRV, measuring success against your former HRV rather than comparing your levels to others.
According to the CDC, more than 42 million individuals in America are now impacted by human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV, a very common sexually transmitted infection, can lead to the development of cervical cancer—a global health issue that impacts women of all ages.
Recent studies have indicated an increase in cervical cancer cases associated with HPV infections. While this is concerning, the good news is that many cases of cervical cancer can be prevented through proactive lifestyle changes. It’s also worth noting that cervical cancer, while a serious health concern, is not an inevitability in the face of a positive HPV Pap smear.
With more than 90% of my patients being women who are seeking holistic approaches to cancer prevention, I can attest to the fact that taking a proactive approach with lifestyle choices can have a significant impact on cervical health outcomes. Let’s take a look at three holistic ways I help my patients support their immune systems to fight HPV and reduce cervical cancer risk. These can all form complementary strategies for HPV prevention alongside vaccination:
At some point, you must have experienced a bloated face, red and puffy eyes, as well as dehydrated skin after smoking. Have you ever stopped to think and ask yourself why this happens whenever you smoke? Does using weed cause vasodilation. The answer is maybe.
Photo by Jeff W via Unsplash
What is Vasodilation?
Vasodilation is a mechanism to enhance blood flow to areas of the body that are lacking oxygen and/or nutrients. The vasodilation causes a decrease in systemic vascular resistance (SVR) and an increase in blood flow, resulting in a reduction of blood pressure.
The word “vasodilation” is used to describe the opening up of the body’s blood vessels.
It is the opposite of “vasoconstriction” where the blood vessels close up within the body. It is a temporary situation. It occurs naturally in your body in response to triggers such as low oxygen levels, a decrease in available nutrients, and increases in temperature. It causes the widening of your blood vessels, which in turn increases blood flow and lowers blood pressure.
Consuming marijuana could bring about vasodilation. When using cannabis, blood flow to some parts of the body is restricted or reduced. Oxygen transportation is also slowed down and not quickly delivered as promptly. While not dangerous, vasodilation can occur.
The easiest way to know this is happening is by the obvious reddening of the eyes, as well as the puffy/bloated face of the user. Unfortunately, many are not aware of this physiological mechanism, so they pin it on smoke irritation.
Some medical practitioners prescribe cannabis-based medications to patients suffering from glaucoma, high blood pressure, etc. This is because of the vasodilating response that would be induced by these drugs to help lower the blood pressure.

Vasodilation and Cannabis
While researchers have been able to find useful medical applications for cannabis in the human body, they have still not discovered the full extent of the effects of cannabis consumption on other organs in the body. And the risks involved are most times underestimated. The vasodilating effects of cannabis are one of the physiological responses of the body that have been investigated.
What Makes Cannabis a Vasodilator?
THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) is the main psychoactive element present in cannabis. It is the agent that causes a noticeable increase in the heart rate, as well as a lowered blood pressure.
Another vasodilating effect is dizziness. This is because THC reacts with cannabinoid receptors present around the body, most especially the eyes to induce these effects.
Although THC is not the only cannabinoid responsible for all these, it is responsible for the bulk of these reactions. The amount of THC present in the cannabis strain ingested determines the extent of vasodilation in the user’s body.
For example, consuming a cannabis strain with less than 15% THC might result in little or no noticeable reddening of the eyes, compared to consuming over 30% THC cannabis strain. It also depends on the user’s tolerance, because everyone’s body anatomy is unique.
What Causes Reddening Of the Eyes?
The main reason your eyes get red — or bloodshot and bloated — when you use marijuana is due to vasodilation being set off by THC and other cannabinoids present in cannabis. When your eyes redden and get puffy, it indicates that there is an increased blood flow to your eyeball due to the dilation of blood vessels and capillaries around the eye area.
After the effects of the drugs begin to wear off, the capillaries and blood vessels gradually begin to close off and constrict. Till everything is back to normal.
Can Vasodilation Be Halted?
Vasodilation is a subconscious response, hence it cannot be prevented from occurring. Neither can it be halted when it has started. It only stops when the last effects of cannabis wear off in the body. You have zero control over the workings of vasodilation, nor vasoconstriction.
However, you can put in the effort to mask/cover up the effects of using cannabis by hiding your bloated face and puffy eyes.
Masking Vasodilation
Like I mentioned above vasodilation can’t be stopped, however with a few techniques you can effectively mask the signs. Here are some ways you can hide your puffy reds eyes effectively.
Eye drops—Allergy and Artificial: Allergy drops help with bloodshot eyes. It effectively reduces discomfort and redness. If it is itchy, it also helps soothe the eyes. Artificial teardrops can also help, although it is not as efficient as allergy eye drops, which is not surprising.
Both drops contain Tetryzoline, which acts as a constricting agent for the blood vessels. And both drops are easy to get at the nearest pharmacy over the counter.

Using Sunglasses: This is a perfect way to hide the use of marijuana, especially when in a public gathering with people you do not stare at your bloodshot eyes.
For example, you can use it for a lecture in college. It’s simple, less expensive, and fast to just pick your glasses, put them on and go about basking in your high. The only downside to this is that you cannot wear sunglasses at night, so as not to damage your eyesight.
Doing away with caffeinated drink: Coffee is also like cannabis, they are both vasodilators. Stay hydrated. Take a very cold bath if you can or put ice bags over your eyes.
Calmly wait for symptoms to subside: The redness will even be reduced and everything will go back to normal. The duration may vary from 1-12 hours depending on your body’s tolerance, weight, metabolism. And the strain and dose of cannabis ingested. Choose strains of cannabis with low THC.
Vasodilation is a temporary issue which can be partially mitigated with some simple steps. There isn’t a long term danger.
I’d say “rescue balm” is the perfect name for this skin savior. With its compact design, it’s so easy to stash into any tote and take it on the go. As a city dweller, I’ve often used it to soften calluses and soothe blisters on my heels, as well as on my dry elbows and knees for an instant burst of hydration. It’s technically now fall, but temperatures are still a bit wonky here in NYC—shorts season is hanging on by a thread, y’all, and this balm is perfect for moisturizing my flaky, rough knees while they remain on display.
This topical formula is the most comparable to actual lip filler, IMO. (I don’t personally have any filler at this point in my life, but I’ve talked to other beauty fans who do, and they agree.) Like the previous product, DermInfusions contains four molecular weights of HA to usher water into each layer of the lip skin. Trehalose, another humectant, adds even more water-binding properties to plump the lips with moisture.
It also contains a peptide blend (palmitoyl tripeptide-38 and palmitoyl tripeptide-1, to be specific) to help stimulate collagen and give lips a firmer appearance. Finally, the treatment includes known skin soothers—ectoin, bisabolol, and centella asiatica—to heal chapped lips, prevent dryness, and protect the skin from environmental aggressors (which can make lips appear dull).
You can read my full review of the lip treatment here for more info, but overall, this is my favorite option. I love how instantly full and vibrant my lips look after just a few minutes, and without any additional swipe of color. It does come with a slight tingle, but the sensation goes away after about a minute. The finish reads just like a nonsticky lip oil—I’m obsessed.
The only downside I can think of is that it’s less inconspicuous than other options on this list. It looks high-tech, and it’s a relatively large pen, so you can’t really stash it in your pocket or small handbag like you might a standard lip balm. I personally don’t mind the design—I’ll happily gush about the effective formula to anyone who asks me what I’m applying.
As you can see from my before-and-after photo above, the DermInfusions treatment works pretty immediately. I’ve tried a few topical lip fillers, and I have yet to find one that works this quickly. In about three minutes, my lips became instantly fuller and more vibrant in hue. No additional lip color in the “after” photo, I swear!
I also don’t have any lip filler; I’m not against it (and I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t thought about it), but I’m sort of a wimp when it comes to needles. The fact that this “lip filler alternative” provides similarly enhanced results is perfect for someone like me. And if you do already have filler, Gross notes DermInfusions can prolong the life of the in-office treatment, resulting in less frequent touch-ups.
Not to mention, I can totally see a difference in the health of my lips for the long haul. I typically struggle with chapped lips no matter the weather, but after using the DermInfusions treatment for about a month, I’ve noticed way less flakes and cracks.
My lips also naturally look plumper and juicier before I slather on the treatment. I suspect that’s because the formula nourishes the lips with skin-loving peptides and humectants as opposed to simply zapping them with spicy essential oils—and aptly hydrated lips appear way more pillowy and plump.
Instead of focusing on simply hydrating more, it might be worth hydrating smarter.
Cohen will sometimes have her patients drink less water overall, but with added factors that make the water they do drink more hydrating. “I have them give up a glass or two a day and instead add minerals. They say they feel better and are better satiated and quenched,” she explains.
“Colostrum is the initial milk produced by the mammary glands of mammals when they give birth,” explains board-certified dermatologist Hadley King, M.D. “It’s rich in nutrients, antibodies, antioxidants that help to nourish the baby and help build the baby’s immune system. It changes to regular breast milk after two to three days.” So it’s not regular breast milk—it’s supercharged breast milk.
The colostrum powders you see lining the supplement aisle typically come from cows (aka, bovine colostrum), and they’re brimming with vitamins, minerals, digestive enzymes, antibodies and other immune system proteins, growth hormones, fats, and carbohydrates, King shares. When you ingest those nutrients, they can theoretically help support your immune system and gut health.
Let’s dive into those skin-related benefits, shall we? First thing’s first: Colostrum and collagen are not frenemies—they actually work synergistically. “Colostrum helps stimulate collagen production7,” notes Poon.
As we discussed up top, “Collagen is a protein that your body creates naturally that gives your skin elasticity,” she adds. “Natural production of this protein decreases with age, so people are often looking for ways to support this process.”
And thanks to those growth factors and immunoproteins, colostrum may help with fibroblast activation, wound healing, and tissue repair, says King—all of which happen to be top notch benefits for healthy skin aging. “[Colostrum] has even been shown to repair damaged skin8,” says Poon.
“In terms of diet, reduce sugar, reduce processed red meats, and reduce alcohol, especially beer,” says Johnson. (It’s the brewer’s yeast in beer that can become a problem, thanks to its high purine content1.)
We generally encourage a balanced approach to all of the above, but if you have any concerns with your kidneys, you might want to be extra vigilant of your intake. “There is absolutely no doubt that high-sugar diets make kidney disease worse,” Johnson adds.
It’s actually fructose that’s the culprit, he adds: When you eat sugar, glucose and fructose separate in the gut, and you absorb them on their own. And “Fructose is the driver of uric acid and of kidney disease,” he shares.
Now, you might be thinking: Doesn’t fruit contain fructose? You’re absolutely right, but according to Johnson, the amount is pretty minimal. “Even though fruit contains some fructose, it’s so much less than a soft drink,” he explains. Let’s try to look at the big picture, here, instead of splitting hairs.
Processed red meat, additionally, causes your body to produce a lot more uric acid. “When you’re eating red processed meats a lot, your uric acid probably is going to be pretty high, and you should get it checked,” he notes. As a refresher: When your body is producing too much uric acid, it can build up and lead to the formation of urate crystals. Over time, these crystals can cause gout and kidney stones2.
First thing’s first: Anyone, regardless of age, can benefit from a simple cleanse, moisturize, protect regimen. “Sunscreen is a must from birth onwards,” notes board-certified dermatologist Rebecca Marcus, M.D., founder of MaeiMD. “And antioxidant protection can benefit those at any age.”
Board-certified dermatologist Loretta Ciraldo, M.D., FAAD, agrees: “If the advice is what we dermatologists recommend—washing your face with gentle cleanser at least once, preferably twice a day, and using SPF 30 to 60 when outdoors—this is something that I support, and it is really never too early to start this,” she tells mindbodygreen.
It’s when pre-teens start to dabble in potent, photosensitizing actives—acids, retinols, and the like—that they start wreaking havoc on their skin barriers, she adds. However, depending on when a child hits adolescence, a derm might actually recommend these stronger ingredients to target specific skin concerns (namely, acne).
“Some 11 year olds are already experiencing skin changes associated with puberty, in which case retinoids and other acne-fighting ingredients are indicated,” notes Marcus. So the answer is a resounding it depends, but kids should always get the green light from a derm before slathering on potentially-irritating ingredients.
Now, things get tricky when it comes to hydrating, collagen-promoting ingredients—think peptides, growth factors, etc. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great that these ingredients are receiving more air time on social media and reaching a younger demographic—after all, true skin longevity starts with early prevention methods! And while they don’t carry the same irritation potential as retinoids (assuming you use a high-quality formula), they also aren’t really that necessary for a much younger age group.
“We start to lose collagen in our 20s1, so that would be a good time to start using more advanced actives, such as peptides and growth factors, which function to help stimulate collagen,” Marcus says. When you’re very young and your skin is already chock-full of collagen, there’s not much to replenish.
Sorry to say, an 11-year-old slathering on an innovative peptide-infused formula is likely just wasting money (a lot of money, given the steep price tags on some of these innovative, biotech-derived confections). The serum will hydrate their skin, no doubt, but they don’t necessarily need the collagen-restoring capabilities those peptides provide.
An early adolescent would fare far better with focusing on sun protection (and perhaps acne, considering the skin starts to produce more oil due to hormonal changes), waiting until young adulthood when collagen maintenance becomes front and center to use specific antioxidants, retinols, and other collagen-stimulating actives.
With Y2K inspired, well, everything (spiky buns, frosted lids, chunky belts…the list goes on), it only makes sense that body mists would re-enter the beauty chat. And for those who did experience the body mist boom back in the day, snagging one of these modern versions can help you tap into your whimsical, youthful side.
“There’s something about body mists that is easy, lighthearted, and fun,” notes Bee Shapiro, founder of Ellis Brooklyn. They’re typically less concentrated than your standard eau de parfum, which means they don’t have as much longevity, so you can feel free to spray with abandon without fear of overpowering your senses. It’s more about an immediate splash of scent than one that develops with wear.
This casual application makes them ideal for summer spritzing, says Debi Theis, president of Henry Rose, especially for those with more active lifestyles. Why? You see, body mists tend to be way more hydrating than other types of fragrance, so they can easily double as a skin refresher.
“They’re formulated with water as their base, as opposed to eau de parfums which are [typically] alcohol-based, making them refreshing and cooling to the skin; allowing for liberal spritzing throughout the day and all over the body and hair,” Theis explains.
Yet don’t mistake their laid-back, less concentrated nature for simplicity—body mists can be layered and complex. They typically focus on a single note, but it’s still important to balance out the olfactory experience with other key aromas, and that’s what keeps them smelling sophisticated.
So let’s stop believing body mists are inferior to perfumes; it just depends on which fragrance experience you’re craving on a given day. “I work with master perfumers for both formats—they are just different expressions of scent,” adds Shapiro.
Now this doesn’t mean you should always reach for a sugar-packed processed electrolyte drink. Instead, call upon natural sources of electrolytes like unflavored coconut water, Cording recommends.
You can also make your own electrolyte beverage by adding a little citrus juice, salt, baking soda to water, along with any add-ins you like such as herbs or spices: she says. If you crave extra sweetness, add some maple syrup or honey.
If you prefer an electrolyte-rich snack, have a slice of watermelon sprinkled with salt, chili pepper, and lime juice, Moon says.
Just know that while you may not need electrolyte supplements daily, it is important to have them on hand for times of excess sweating, alcohol consumption, or other causes of dehydration.
The drink is also often referred to as switchel, ginger water, or haymaker’s punch—the latter name coming from a history of consumption by farmers spending the day outside who needed that extra hydration boost, Sorlie explains.
The recipe Sorlie provides is packed with electrolytes from sea salt, ginger, and lemon but free from refined sugars and artificial sweeteners.
In terms of electrolyte content, it’s comparable to commercial sports drinks. When you crunch the numbers using nutrient facts from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)1, the recipe contains 3,145 milligrams of electrolytes from a combination of sodium, magnesium, potassium, and calcium. It makes three servings, so there are 1,048 milligrams of electrolytes in every serving. Comparably, Gatorade Gatorlyte—their highest-electrolyte formula—only contains 504 milligrams (and those are only from sodium and potassium).
Plus, this recipe is delicious and super easy to make in a large batch. The flavor is equally punchy and tangy as it is soothing and refreshing. The fresh mint leaf serves as a pick-me-up and adds a level of sophistication to the beverage. Leave it over ice for a few minutes before drinking for that extra snappy chill.
I’ll be calling on it to replenish my hydration levels during a hot summer day, after a long workout, or to bounce back from a night out.
WASHINGTON—Calling the influencer-backed beverage a serious public health concern, a visibly erect Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) called on the FDA Monday to investigate the 72-hour erection he had experienced as a result of drinking Logan Paul’s Prime energy drink. “Buyers and parents need to understand the risks involved with having a three-day stiffy that’s as hard as a mallet,” said the Senate Minority Leader, who winced as he pulled at his pants from behind the podium, confirming that his erection remained unchanged despite repeated efforts to take a cold shower, masturbate, and make love to his wife, Iris. “After drinking just one can of this stuff last week, I still feel the effects of arousal, to the point that I cannot physically urinate without leaning over the toilet. It’s just throbbing down there, and I’m worried it’s here for good. Durbin took a sip, too, and look at him—he can’t even sit down. This beverage, marketed simply as a ‘hydration supplement’ has no business being on U.S. shelves. I am begging the FDA: Please, for the love of God, investigate my penis.” At press time, Schumer was overheard explaining to the Senate Ethics Committee that his bulging erection was not sexual, but rather a physiological response to blue raspberry flavoring.
