  • ‘I was in a headlock’: 14-year-old boy recovering after violent attack at Pleasant Grove High School

A violent attack at Pleasant Grove High School in Elk Grove sent a 14-year-old boy to the hospital after he was assaulted by a group of students, resulting in the arrest of four students. Hunter, who didn’t want to share his last name, said that it all started over a girl he used to date, who he said then dated one of the alleged attackers. “I just got out of class and then I just see that group of kids coming towards me,” Hunter said. He described how one of the students approached him while yelling and punched him. He said as he took off his backpack and tried to defend himself, three other students joined in the attack. “More kids started going in and I was in a headlock. And then, I got thrown to the floor and, like, this kid is like, three times my size, and he’s like sitting on me, throwing punches at me and then another kid joins in, kicks me and starts hitting me,” he said.Screenshots from a video sent to Hunter’s father by the Elk Grove Police Department show the fight ending with Hunter face down on the ground as a teacher intervened. “I literally got full-on stomped into concrete like face down,” Hunter said. “I’m just laying on the floor. I’m not even fighting back.”The four students involved, all 14 years old, were arrested on assault charges and taken to juvenile hall, according to the Elk Grove Police Department. Hunter was taken to the hospital following the attack, where he was treated for his injuries, including a concussion. “He told me he’s like, ‘Dad I could have been killed. I could be paralyzed. I couldn’t play football anymore,’” Sean, Hunter’s father, said. While Hunter is expected to recover, his father said he wished more had been done sooner. “It just blows my mind that where’s security? You know, there’s teachers there,” he said. The school principal sent a message to families on Thursday, stating that school staff and security responded immediately to de-escalate the situation and emphasized that safety is their top priority. “Today, an altercation occurred on campus involving several students. • An intruder made it to the second flood of L.A. Mayor Bass’ home: Here’s what we know

An intruder made it to the second flood of L.A. Mayor Bass’ home: Here’s what we know

There are still some unanswered questions about the intruder who police say broke into Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass’ official residence Sunday.

No one was hurt in the incident, and police arrested Ephraim Hunter, 29. A motive for the break-in remains unclear. L.A. County prosecutors are reviewing the case.

    Here is what we know:

Security cameras are positioned outside Getty House, the official residence of L.A. Mayor Karen Bass.

(Jason Armond / Los Angeles Times)

    The break-in

On Sunday afternoon, officials offered sparse details about the incident, announcing only that an arrest had been made.

“This morning at about 6:40 a.m., an intruder broke into Getty House through a window. Mayor Bass and her family were not injured and are safe,” Zach Seidl, deputy mayor of communications, said in a statement.

Neither Bass nor the Los Angeles Police Department have provided additional details.

Two law enforcement sources who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case with the media told The Times that Hunter made it to the second floor of the home, causing Bass to hide in a safe area designed to protect against intruders, akin to a panic room.

Hunter was arrested without incident, according to police, who said nothing had been stolen.

    The suspect

Hunter, an L.A. resident, was booked on suspicion of burglary Sunday afternoon, police said. No charges have been filed.

In a phone interview Monday, a woman who identified herself as Hunter’s mother said he had been struggling with drug addiction and possibly suffering from hallucinations.

Josephine Duah said Hunter called her from jail Monday morning and claimed he was fleeing from someone “trying to shoot him.” Her son had no idea whose house he’d entered the previous day, she said.

“He didn’t know that at all,” Duah said. “He just was running. … He thought somebody was chasing him and he hopped some fences and he went in the house. … I’m wondering if, mentally, he was relieved if he saw police.”

    Getty House

The imposing residence is located in Windsor Square, one of L.A.’s more tony neighborhoods.

One of the perks of being elected mayor is the right to live in the house, which has 14 rooms and seven bathrooms.

An exterior view of Getty House, the L.A. mayor's official residence.

(Allen J. Schaben / Los Angeles Times)

The house, which was donated to the city by Getty Oil Co. in 1975, is fitted with expensive objects, including a $25,000 chandelier, The Times reported in 2005.

Built by Swedish immigrants in 1921, it has been home to oil tycoons and actors, including J. Paul Getty, the Barrymore family and Lee Strasberg.

    Security

Security at the residences has been a topic of debate.

In 2020, it was the site of numerous protests over policing policies in the wake of George Floyd’s murder by Minneapolis police. Other protests at the mayor’s home have demanded that the city impose a blanket ban on evictions, cancel rents and take over hotels to house homeless people.

Officials did not disclose security arrangements at Getty House.

One LAPD source, not authorized to speak publicly about the case, said that in the wake of the break-in, a 24-hour security operation is now in place at Getty House, with police maintaining a visible presence in the area.

Bass on Monday declined to speak at length about the incident: “Let me just say first of all, I am fine. My family is fine. And we are going to do everything we can to keep Angelenos safe.”

  • Monster Hunter Now weapon list and how to unlock new weapon types

Monster Hunter Now weapon list and how to unlock new weapon types

Weapons are the most important tools in your Monster Hunter Now arsenal.

This mobile version of the series stripped back the usual roster of weapons down to six choices at launch, locking them behind story quest progression or Hunter Rank progress, with more being introduced with seasonal updates over time.

Despite the limited number of weapons in Monster Hunter Now, there are a couple of ranged options and series staples, such as the Great Sword, giving you some variety to play around with.

Monster Hunter Now weapons list: How many weapons are there?

To date, the roster of weapons in Monster Hunter Now is as follows:

    • Sword and Shield
    • Great Sword
    • Bow
    • Hammer
    • Light Bowgun
    • Long Sword
    • Dual Blades (added in Dec. 2023’s “Fulminations in the Frost” update)
    • Lance (added in Dec. 2023’s “Fulminations in the Frost” update)

Developers Niantic and Capcom have confirmed new weapon types will continue to be added to the game as part of a “season system,” so for those familiar with the main series, hopefully your favorites will roll out before too long.

How to unlock new weapon types in Monster Hunter Now

Image: Niantic / Capcom via Polygon

To begin with, you’ll only have access to the Sword and Shield, albeit with multiple variations by forging together parts from slaying large monsters.

To unlock new weapon types in Monster Hunter Now, you must progress through the main story quest. Specifically, you need to reach Chapter 2, where you’ll first unlock the Great Sword, and just a few steps later, the remaining roster of weapons.

Specifically, you need to reach the following points in the story:

    • To unlock the Great Sword, complete the first stage of “Chapter 2: Shimmering Swamp” in the main story.
    • To unlock the Bow, Hammer, Light Bowgun, and Long Sword, reach Hunter Rank 15.
    • To unlock the Dual Blades and Lance, they appear to unlock for all players from Hunter Rank 15 as part of Dec. 2023’s “Fulminations in the Frost” update.

These pre-requisites aren’t too far into your Monster Hunter Now journey — requiring just a few hours of play. Of course, that might be staggered out depending on how much you’re able to explore, with many story steps based on collecting resources, which will be limited if you are playing in just a single spot.

Meanwhile, though large monsters do spawn frequently on your stationary position, making use of paintballs for when you need to complete large monster steps quickly is advised.

When will new weapon types arrive in Monster Hunter Now?

New weapon types — alongside new monsters and story updates — will be coming to Monster Hunter Now as part of major quarterly updates.

The first of these was “Fulminations in the Frost”, arriving Dec. 2023, which introduced the Dual Blades and Lance.

From here, developers Niantic and Capcom have confirmed “additional weapon types” from March 2023.

It’s possible there’s more to come in this update — and if not, expect more weapons to be rolled out in subsequent ones to come.

  • Top 10 Best Exotic Armor For Void Hunters in Destiny 2 (November 2023)

Top 10 Best Exotic Armor For Void Hunters in Destiny 2 (November 2023)

This is for all the Hunters out there who appreciate the sneaker side of Destiny 2’s combat sandbox. From overshields, to invisibility, to Volatile Rounds, the Exotic armors found in this ranked list should give plenty of insight into many varied build choices for your Void Hunter.

With that said, here is Destiny 2: the top 10 Exotic armor for Void Hunters in Destiny 2.

    10. Gwisin Vest

At the last spot on the list comes the Gwisin Vest. While this Exotic armor is indeed made for the Void Hunter, its ability that augments the Spectral Blades Super pales in comparison to others on this list. This armor’s perk ‘Roving Assassin’ refunds super energy based on the number of kills you get with the Spectral Blades Super once you use the Super’s heavy attack.

In terms of raw numbers, it doesn’t return a huge amount. If you’re in PvE it’s 11.1% after 1 kill and 17.1% after 5. While in PvP it’s 8.3% after 1 and 16.7% after 5 kills. If this chest armor did something more outside of prolong the Spectral Blade Super, it might have been higher up on this list.

    9. Motherkeeper’s Wraps

The Mothkeeper Wraps Exotic armor in Destiny 2

This is one of the newer items that Hunters have access to, and it does work with all subclasses. That’s because these Exotic arms replace your grenade ability with ‘Cage of Loyal Moths’. The result is that when you use your grenade two moths explode out of where your new grenade lands. Depending on if you or an ally is close by, two Arc moths will spawn to explode on enemies, or two Void moths will quickly fly to you or any ally to give a 22.5hp Void shield each. Alternatively, an Arc and Void moth can spawn, doing a bit of both.

When you take into account the damage and Void shield amounts given in PvE and PvP, this Exotic simply doesn’t hold up to others on this list. Especially when it completely replaces your powerful Void grenade.

    8. Assassin’s Cowl

Assassin's Cowl Exotic Armor in Destiny 2

Assassin’s Cowl is one of those Exotics that work incredibly well in PvE but much less so in PvP. Its perk ‘Vanishing Execution’ restores health and grants invisibility based on the kind of enemy you kill with powered melee attack or finisher—with finisher kills generally giving longer invisibility and more HP back in general. Now, this is a lot of people’s favorite helmet for quite a few builds across the many other subclasses.

However, I don’t find it as valuable for Void unless you’re in dire need of a constant source of healing. You can already go invisible pretty easily, so Exotics that can buff invisibility, and not just how you turn invisible, is something I find more interesting.

    7. Fr0st-EE5

The Fr0st-EE5 Exotic Armor in Destiny 2

These boots fair a bit better than previous armor on this list. In all of the Exotics that help you go invisible, or use abilities, this is certainly one of the better ones due to its perk. The perk, ‘Rapid Cooldown,’ doubles your grenade and melee ability regen rate in PvE, and increases the base regen rate by 100% in PvP. While your class ability base regen is increased by 200% in PvP.

All of that happens while sprinting, which should be pretty often! Then, when you dodge and go invisible, your movement speed will also be increased by roughly 6%. This makes ambushing other players while invisible even easier. However, other Exotics on this list simply augment other Void abilities better than just “reduced cooldown.”

    6. The Bombardiers

The Bombardiers Exotic Armor in Destiny 2

Now we’re starting to get into the Exotic armor options that mesh quite well with the Void Hunter loadout. I say this because these boots’ Exotic perk, ‘Parting Gift’, drops a bomb whenever you dodge. This bomb explodes after 1.5 seconds and deals a substantial amount of damage over a 7.5-meter radius.

What’s cool about this bomb is that it applies a different effect depending on your subclass. So, as a Void Hunter, the dropped bomb will have the effect of suppression, much like the suppression grenade at your disposal already. However, the key difference is that this bomb uses “Lite” suppression, so it won’t be taking other Guardian’s out of their Supers. If it did, or if the bomb did more damage, it would have been higher on the list.

    5. Khepri’s Sting

Khepri's Sting Exotic Armor in Destiny 2

This Exotic’s perk is pretty valuable to have, but with some caveats. The perk, ‘Touch of Venom,’ instantly casts Smoke Bomb on the enemy if your melee ability is fully charged. Additionally, your Smoke Bomb with do 50% more damage than usual, on top of granting you Truesight for 3 seconds. This allows you to see enemies through walls up to 64 meters away.

Even better is if you want to use your Smoke Bomb normally and leave it lying around for say, another player to stumble upon. Doing so gives you 500% additional base melee recharge rate while your Smoke Bomb lies in wait to be triggered. Because this armor is more useful in PvP over PvE, Khepri’s Sting sits at the number five spot.

    4. Omnioculus

The Omnioculus Exotic Armor in Destiny 2

These Exotic heavy gauntlets are an excellent choice if your goal is to make yourself and your team invisible. That’s because its perk, ‘Beyond The Veil,’ gives you a second Smoke Bomb charge. Furthermore, when you use the smoke bomb to make yourself invisible, you can use it on your teammates too. Additionally, when you or your team is invisible by your Smoke Bomb, you’ll have 50% damage reduction in PvE, and 10% in PvP.

What really makes this Exotic pop is that for each teammate you make invisible you get a refund of 50% of the melee ability energy needed to cast it! With that said, the damage reduction buff does not apply when you’re in your Super. Because of how useful invisibility is, this Exotic can do quite well in pretty much any mode, ranking it higher on the list.

Even after so many nerfs, the Wormhusk Crown is still easily a top 3 Exotic for the Hunter. Its perk, ‘Burning Souls,’ grants 67 HP split across health and shields whenever you use your dodge. This is especially strong if you are rocking a Void build that has a focus on low cooldowns for your dodge class ability. Even more so if your playstyle as a Void Hunter is to be aggressive and reactive with your dodging to invisible yourself out and into combat.

    2. Graviton Forfeit

Easily one of the best Void Hunter Exotics in the game, Graviton Forfeit is an incredible example of enhancing the Void Hunter’s moment to moment sneaky gameplay. It does this through its Exotic perk, ‘Vanishing Shadow,’ where invisibility lasts 2 seconds longer. Additionally, and more importantly, while you are invisible your Recover and Reload Speed are increased by 100.

Better yet is that your base melee regen rate is increased by 400% without enemies nearby and up to 800% when more than 2 enemies are near. This number is reduced to 100% and 300% respectively while in PvP, but even then, all of the bonuses of this Exotic around invisibility are always useful and valued.

    1. Gyrfalcon’s Hauberk

The Gyrfalcon's Hauberk Exotic Armor in Destiny 2

Gyrfalcon’s Hauberk: this list’s best Exotic and the hardest to pronounce correctly. This bad boy has many powerful synergies that really enhance the more bombastic side of the Void subclass and reminds me more of how a Titan benefits from Void powers. It is because its perk, ‘See Me, Feel Me,’ grants your Void weapons Volatile Rounds for 10 seconds (or 3 seconds in PvP) after you drop out of invisibility.

Now, Volatile Rounds not only allow your weapon to pierce Barrier Champion Shields but cover your enemies in Void particles that cause them to explode after taking enough damage. But this Exotic doesn’t stop there, if you are invisible and use a Finisher on an enemy, you get a 35% Weapon Damage buff for 6 seconds. You, and anyone within 24 meters, is also granted a Reserve Overshield buff.

This Overshield buff can be used when you dodge to go invisible again and grants you a 40HP Void Overshield for 10 seconds. During that time, you also have 500% additional base class ability regeneration rate. As you can see, this is easily one of the craziest Exotic perks in the game and gives you and your team quite a lot of defensive utility while giving yourself more damage and AoE. The only place this Exotic falls short is in PvP where the Reserve Overshield can’t be procced, but its other effects in PvE simply overshadow everything else.

Joe Biden Acknowledges 7th Grandchild For First Time

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden on Friday for the first time publicly acknowledged his seventh grandchild, a four-year-old girl fathered by his son Hunter with an Arkansas woman, Lunden Roberts, in 2018.

“Our son Hunter and Navy’s mother, Lunden, are working together to foster a relationship that is in the best interests of their daughter, preserving her privacy as much as possible going forward,” Biden said in a statement. It was his first acknowledgement of the child.

“This is not a political issue, it’s a family matter,” he said. “Jill and I only want what is best for all of our grandchildren, including Navy.”

Hunter Biden’s paternity was established by DNA testing after Roberts sued for child support, and the two parties recently resolved outstanding child support issues. The president’s son wrote about his encounter with Roberts in his 2021 memoir, saying it came while he was deep in addiction to alcohol and drugs, including crack cocaine.

“I had no recollection of our encounter,” he wrote. “That’s how little connection I had with anyone. I was a mess, but a mess I’ve taken responsibility for.”

The president, who has made a commitment to family central to his public persona, has faced increasing criticism from political rivals and pundits for failing to acknowledge the granddaughter. According to a person familiar with the matter, he was taking the cue from his son while the legal proceedings played out. The person spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private matters.

Biden’s statement was first reported by People Magazine.

  • Death Note, Sailor Moon, And Other Classic Animes Are Now Free On YouTube

Death Note, Sailor Moon, And Other Classic Animes Are Now Free On YouTube

    Image: Viz Media

Anime and manga publisher Viz Media just made a handful of really big anime series freely available to watch on YouTube. If you’re looking for a good entry point into some really prolific shows, this is an excellent opportunity to dive into some stone-cold classics.

The company has uploaded six of the hit shows it owns rights for to YouTube and compiled them into helpful playlists. Death Note, Hunter x Hunter, Inuyasha, Mr. Osomatsu, Naruto, and Sailor Moon are all there, most in their entirety, for your viewing pleasure. Notably, these are the Japanese versions of the shows with English subtitles, so if you’re a person who likes to watch dubbed anime, this might not be what you’re looking for. But if you like to keep it original, there’s a lot to dig into here. I’ve personally always wanted to watch Death Note after hearing about it through cultural osmosis over the years, and even though I tend to prefer dubs, this is too good an opportunity to waste.

    Let’s run down each show:

    Death Note

Death Note is the shortest anime on the list, with only 37 episodes across its one season. It centers around the titular Death Note, a notebook with the power to kill anyone whose name is written inside. A teenager named Light Yagami finds the book and uses it to kill people he deems immoral and unworthy of life; this string of seemingly unstoppable, random murders eventually draws the attention of L, an eccentric, brilliant detective, leading to an electrifying, supernatural game of cat-and-mouse.

    Hunter x Hunter

Hunter x Hunter follows Gon Freecss, a boy attempting to follow in his absentee father’s footsteps as a Hunter, heroes who track down rare creatures, seek treasures, and hunt down other people as well. Hunter x Hunter is famous for being near universally lauded by all who watch it, turning them into proselytizing advocates who really, really think you should check it out. The show is one of the lengthier ones Viz has put up on YouTube, with 148 episodes available across its six arcs. But there are a few that are even longer. Such as…

    Inuyasha

Rumiko Takahashi’s Inuyasha follows the titular half-demon as he joins a high school girl named Kagome Higurashi to recover the shards of a shattered Shikon Jewel. A huge hit on Cartoon Network’s Toonami block back in the day, the show’s seven seasons come in at 197 episodes.

    Mr. Osomatsu

Mr. Osomatsu goes way back to the sixties, when Fujio Akatsuka’s comedic manga was a cultural phenomenon in Japan. This anime adaptation is much newer, dating from 2015. It’s worth noting that Mr. Osomatsu is the only show Viz has uploaded on YouTube that doesn’t include its entire run. The currently uploaded first two seasons of the animated family comedy show make up 50 out of the series’ 75-episode run.

    Naruto

At 220 episodes, Naruto is nearly the biggest time sink Viz has put up on YouTube. The five-season show makes up the first Part of Naruto, which follows the titular character as he attends a school to become a ninja. These 220 episodes are followed by Naruto: Shippuden, which is another 500 episodes, and another sequel show called Boruto that follows Naruto’s child. So you’re opening up Pandora’s Box if you decide to sit down and watch this one.

    Sailor Moon

However, the show with the most episodes in this (initial?) wave of uploads is 1990s bishoujo phenom Sailor Moon, which comes in with a whopping 238 videos across its five seasons. It’s the classic Magical Girl anime, and follows a group of teenagers who turn into superheroes and do superhero shit. She’s the icon. She is the moment. And her show is all readily available to watch on YouTube, free of charge. (The handful of specials and later movies are not currently available, though.)

If you’re not an anime connoisseur, there’s some really great entry points here, but if you’re a real sicko and have already seen these shows, you now have a real easy way to revisit them. Speaking for myself, I’m about to cue up some Death Note. It’s time I finally checked it out.

One of the main advertising gimmicks of tonight’s Game Awards was a promotion being run by Valve that would see a viewer win one of the company’s prized Steam Deck handhelds every minute.

As we reported last week, to be eligible you had to be watching the show on Valve’s own Steam.TV website:

As announced November 30, Valve is celebrating The Game Awards with a massive Steam Deck giveaway. The company will be giving out a free handheld PC to a single person every minute for the entire run of The Game Awards. (Never in history has someone wanted The Game Awards to run long, until now…) To have a chance, you’ll need to first register for the drawing, which you can do now, then watch The Game Awards via Valve’s Steam.TV website.

It was an odd promo for a number of reasons. Firstly, because as early as the first major award presentation the show was clearly running way over time, something even host Geoff Keighley had to acknowledge in relation to the giveaway. And secondly, because of who won.

During Christopher Judge’s acceptance speech, which, yes, did run long but was also incredibly emotional and heart-warming, the winners of Steam Decks started popping up. So while Judge was up there, pouring out his heart, the rest of us were witness to:

People who were either disappointed (a minority) or who found it incredibly funny (the majority) began tweeting their congratulations to Mr or Mrs Hunter, which led at one point to “Milf Hunter” becoming a trending topic in the United States across all of Twitter.

Given “Milf Hunter” is also the name of a porn outlet, and The Game Awards have almost zero cultural penetration outside this bubble, you can understand some people’s confusion:

I mean, it is definitely where that site is heading, don’t get me wrong. Just not tonight.

If you missed this, or any other Game Awards stuff, we’ve got you covered with this roundup, which includes everything from a Death Stranding 2 reveal, to a Hades 2 announcement, to Al Pacino.
