  • Texas True Crime: Lovers’ Lane Murders

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — It’s been 35 years since the quiet summer night that shattered two families forever, and left Houston with one of its most haunting cold cases.

On August 23, 1990, 22-year-old Cheryl Henry and 21-year-old Andy Atkinson went out for a date night in west Houston. The young couple, still in the early glow of their relationship, went to a club called Bayou Mamma’s with Henry’s younger sister, Shane Craig.

But by the next morning, neither had come home.

When Cheryl didn’t show up for work, something her sister says was completely unlike her, alarms began to sound.

“I didn’t know what I knew right then,” Craig recalled. “But I knew something was wrong. She had just started that job. She loved it too much to ever just not show up.”

What followed was every family’s worst nightmare.

A search led police to the couple’s car parked near a remote, wooded area on Houston’s west side. Nearby, investigators made a horrifying discovery – the bodies of Cheryl and Andy. Cheryl had been brutally raped. Andy was found tied to a tree. Their murders would soon become known across Texas as The Lovers Lane Murders.

Friends and family who rushed to the scene still remember the chaos and heartbreak.

“It was horrible,” said Dani Walker, one of Cheryl’s closest friends. “They brought the dogs out, and when those dogs started going crazy, we knew they had found somebody. It was just… awful.”

At first, investigators were confident they would find the killer. There was evidence – blood, DNA, and a crime scene that seemed to hold clues.

“Initially I thought, okay, three to six months,” said Andy’s cousin, Tim Godwin. “We’d find out who did this, there’d be a trial, and they’d be brought to justice.”

But months turned into years. One year became five. Then ten. Even after fifteen years, there were still no arrests, no suspects – only grief and unanswered questions.

Then, after seventeen years, came a glimmer of hope. A DNA sample from the crime scene matched an unknown suspect in another woman’s assault. Police released a composite sketch, raising hopes that the case might finally break open.

    Still, no arrest followed.

“So many dead ends,” said Cheryl’s father, Robert Henry. “But somebody out there knows something. If they would come forward, maybe it would ease their conscience.”

Now, 35 years later, the memories of Andy and Cheryl remain vivid for the people who loved them – two young souls whose futures were stolen on that dark Houston road.

“I just wish he was here,” Andy’s mother, Ann Fowler, said softly. “That we were at the beach, having a good time. That he was married, had kids… that I had grandkids to play with. I wish we were all together.”

As the families continue to speak out – and as forensic technology advances – they hold on to hope that one day, someone will finally come forward.

Who killed Cheryl Henry and Andy Atkinson on Lovers Lane?

After 35 years, their loved ones are still waiting for an answer.

  • 16-year-old bystander shot when 2 drivers fire at each other after crash in Greenspoint, HPD says

16-year-old bystander shot when 2 drivers fire at each other after crash in Greenspoint, HPD says

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Three people are recovering in the hospital after being hit during a shootout following a minor crash in the Greenspoint area. Investigators said one of the injured people was a teenager who was not involved in the original conflict.

The Houston Police Department told ABC13 it received multiple calls about a shooting on West Rankin Road, near Ella Blvd., shortly before 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Investigators said the drivers of two vehicles, a black GMC and a silver Chevy, were involved in a minor crash before they pulled out guns and shot at each other.

One of the witnesses, Hector Chavolla, told ABC13 that he saw the drivers in a physical fight after they got out of their cars. He claims that he began honking at them in an attempt to get them to stop. When the conflict escalated, Chavolla called 911.

HPD said the GMC driver was shot at least five times in the chest and was taken to the hospital critically injured. The Chevy driver was hit at least once in the stomach and then drove a few blocks down the street before being transported.

There was also a 16-year-old boy who was standing on the corner near a taco stand who was hit by the gunfire, according to Commander Mike Collins. The teenager was not related to the incident and was taken to the hospital, where he is said to be stable.

At this time, it is unclear who the aggressor was in the case and whether any charges will be filed.

  • 2 women in critical condition after being shot multiple times on I-45 early Saturday, HPD says

2 women in critical condition after being shot multiple times on I-45 early Saturday, HPD says

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Two women are fighting for their lives after being shot multiple times while in a car on the freeway Saturday morning, according to the Houston Police Department.

Investigators said officers found the two women in a black car that was pulled over on the side of the North Freeway near Gears Road around 1 a.m.

Both women are in their mid-30s.

Lt. Ronnie Willkens said the driver appeared to be shot in the legs, torso, and arm. Investigators believe the passenger was shot through her neck and chin area.

Both women were transported to the hospital, where they in critical condition, police said.

“The only thing they’re able to tell us right now is there was a silver car that cut them off and then started shooting,” Willkens said.

It’s unclear how far the women were able to travel on the freeway after they were shot. Investigators said they don’t know if the victims knew their alleged shooter or if it may have been a case of road rage.

HPD said they are still working to identify who the suspect is and what car they were driving.

Lakewood Church shooting: Female suspect fatally shot after shooting at Joel Osteen’s Houston church

    04:00

HOUSTON – A woman wearing a trenchcoat and armed with a long rifle was fatally shot by law enforcement officers after allegedly opening fire at Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church on Sunday afternoon.

According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, the reported shooting happened in the 3700 block of the Southwest Freeway, at Lakewood Church.

Joel Osteen, who cofounded Lakewood Church, said they were in between services, going into the Spanish service when the shooting started.

Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said at 1:53 p.m., a female, approximately 30-35 years old entered on the west side of the property parking lot. She was armed with a long rifle, wearing a trench coat and a backpack, and accompanied by a 4 or 5-year-old child. Finner said she began to fire the gun after she entered.

Finner complimented the off-duty officers on the scene, one an officer with Houston PD and the other an ATF agent, who both quickly engaged with the female suspect, returning fire.

“It could have been a lot worse,” said Finner. “They stepped up and did their job.”

The off-duty officers said the woman threatened to have a bomb after she was shot. Her vehicle and backpack were searched and no bomb was found. She died at the scene.

Finner said the child with the woman was hit and is in critical condition at Children’s Texas.

A 57-year-old man was also shot in the leg and is being treated at the hospital.

Finner said they do not currently know the woman’s motivation and it is unknown how many shots she fired.

“Of course, we’re devastated. We don’t understand why these things happen,” Osteen said. “We’re going to pray for the 5-year-old little boy, the lady who is deceased and the other gentleman. We’re going to stay strong and continue to move forward.”

Gov. Greg Abbott said he has been in contact with Houston Mayor John Whitmire and offered the “full support and resources” of the state, including the Department of Public Safety and the Texas Rangers to “help bring swift justice to the criminal who committed this heinous act.”

“Our hearts are with those impacted by today’s tragic shooting and the entire Lakewood Church community in Houston,” Abbott said in a statement. “Places of worship are sacred.”

The two off-duty officers will be placed on administrative duty, as is standard when an officer-involved shooting occurs. Investigations into the shooting will be ongoing.

The female suspect has not been identified yet.

Finner said patrols will be increased in and around religious institutions.

Lakewood Church, cofounded by Joel Osteen, is among the largest congregations in the country, averaging about 45,000 attendees per week, according to its website.

    This is a developing story.

  • Man was not missing for 8 years as mother claimed, Houston police say

Man was not missing for 8 years as mother claimed, Houston police say

    CBS News Live 2

    Live

A man who authorities believed was missing for eight years was not actually missing, Houston police said Thursday, adding that his mother deceived police by remaining adamant that he was missing.

Officials said earlier this week that Rudolph “Rudy” Farias was found alive after allegedly vanishing as a teenager eight years ago, but community members then raised questions about whether he was ever truly missing.

Police said Monday that Farias was found outside a church in Houston’s Magnolia Park neighborhood at about 10 p.m. last Thursday. The Texas Center for the Missing, a nonprofit organization that works on missing persons cases, said in a tweet over the weekend that Farias was “located safe” and recovering at a hospital, although it did not share details about his condition.

Officials previously said Farias disappeared while walking his dogs in north Houston in March 2015. The dogs were later found, but Farias was seemingly gone.

Farias’ aunt told CBS affiliate KHOU that his mother was a “mess” in the wake of her son’s alleged return. Speaking to the station several years ago, Farias’ family said they were concerned that he may have been abducted and trafficked.

“He has such a huge heart. He loves with all his heart,” Farias’ mother told KHOU one year after his disappearance. “That’s why we know he wouldn’t just get up and go on his own.”

But neighbors who said they have spent time with Farias since he supposedly vanished have questioned the family’s story and whether or not he truly disappeared. Kisha Ross, who lives with her family on the same street as Santana in northeast Houston, told ABC affiliate KTRK-TV they were shocked to hear Farias was found last week and were not aware he was ever reported missing.

Quanell X, a community activist based in Houston, also spoke to news outlets including CBS affiliate KHOU in the wake of Farias’ apparent return home this week. Saying he met Farias Wednesday after Farias’ mother, Janie Santana, asked him to come to the hotel in Humble where they were meeting with investigators, the activist cast doubts on the accuracy of his family’s story.
