    That’s important advice that Shawn Walchef’s grandfather Luben Walchef instilled in him long before Shawn founded a burgeoning media empire from the back of his single-unit restaurant in the outskirts of San Diego.

    The Cali BBQ Media founder believes that having a streamlined digital ecosystem and tech stack is crucial for the success of any business.

    Just as important is Smartphone Storytelling; all business owners have the power to start telling their own story to the world online — using just their cell phone.

    In his extensive experience as a restaurant owner and operator, Shawn Walchef has seen many businesses use a patchwork of different tools, software platforms, and hardware for marketing, loyalty, point of sale, scheduling, back of the house, etc. This results in a disjointed and inefficient system that ends up costing them extra money and wasted time.

    Walchef acknowledges that investing in the necessary tools for growth can be challenging for business owners. It requires stepping out of the four walls of the business and investing in the resources that will allow the business to expand digitally.

    He believes that connecting with other business owners is also key to learning and moving any enterprise forward.

    Live events (such as Spark by Toast and the Restaurant Transformation Tour by Restaurant365) and online communities provide opportunities to learn from others and stay up to date on the latest trends and best practices.

    Shawn and his Cali BBQ Media team also host two live Clubhouse meet-ups every Wednesday and Friday at 10am (PST) on the social audio app.

    One of the lessons that Walchef has learned through his years in the industry is that slow and steady wins the race. While it is tempting to want immediate success and build a unicorn business, he emphasizes the value of appreciating each day and taking a long-term approach.

    This philosophy applies not only to building a successful restaurant, but also to building a successful media company and family.

    “I heard a quote the other day and I’ve repeated it pretty much every day since I’ve heard it, and it’s to stop praying for ‘as fast as possible’ and start praying for ‘as long as it takes you,’” says Shawn Walchef.

    “So much of what I’ve learned is that, low and slow is how we build our barbecue, how we build our media, how I build my family. It’s appreciating one day at a time.”

    Restaurateur Barbara Lynch Faces Workplace Abuse Allegations | Entrepreneur

    Throughout her 25-year career, Barbara Lynch earned critical acclaim as a chef and leader in the restaurant industry — earning accolades such as Outstanding Restaurateur in 2013 from the James Beard Foundation and one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People in 2017.

    But now, almost two dozen former employees have come forward will complaints of physical and sexual abuse. Investigations from The New York Times and the Boston Globe allege the workplace abuse spanned decades.

    Lynch’s origin story of overcoming poverty in South Boston and pushing against sexism as a female line cook made her a role model in the restaurant world and beyond. To date, Lynch has launched eight restaurant concepts in the Boston-area through her restaurant group, The Barbara Lynch Collective, and published a memoir, Out of Line, in 2017.

    One of the accusers, Michaela Horan, was a manager at Lynch’s The Butcher Shop from 2018 to 2021. She told the NYT when Lynch consumed alcohol, she’d act erratically — and do things like send out improperly cooked chicken and threaten staff members.

    Horan also alleges that Lynch once physically dragged her from behind the bar.

    “I just feel like the behavior in the industry has to end, and she is at the forefront of it,” Horan told the Boston Globe.

    Oscar Simoza, former head bartender of Lynch’s craft-cocktail bar, Drink, alleged to the outlet that the high profile restauranter would grab workers inappropriately as she pushed her way through the crowded bar.

    In a statement to Entrepreneur, Lynch said she is a “creature of the alcohol-steeped restaurant industry” and said she is a “hard-charging boss.” She denied the allegations of abuse.

    “The fantastical accusations surfacing now — that employees working side-by-side with me on the same shifts did not see — seem designed to ‘take me down’ and lump me in with peers accused of behavior that is absolutely criminal,” she said in the statement.

    Historic Maidstone Inn trades for $17M | Long Island Business News

    The historic Maidstone Inn, the East Hampton property with roots dating back centuries, has been sold. 

    The buyers are Tilray Brands CEO Irwin Simon and restaurateur Mayank Dwivedi. Publicly traded Tilray Brands is a pharmaceutical, cannabis and consumer goods conglomerate, which recently acquired Montauk Brewing Company. 

    Though the price was not disclosed, real estate sources say it was about $17 million. 

    The building at 207 Main St. that currently houses the Maidstone was constructed more than 180 years ago, though the property dates back to the 1600s. 

    The Maidstone has 19 guest rooms, a 76-seat restaurant and bar. The building and separate cottages total about 11,000 square feet on 1.14 acres, according to public records.  

    The sellers, Jenny and Jonathan Baker, have owned the Maidstone since 2008 and will retain some continued ownership in the property going forward. The buyers are planning to re-open the Maidstone for the season on May 15. 

    Tony Cerio, Mitch Natter and Jared Schiavoni of Brown Harris Stevens represented the buyers, while Jonathan Solomon of Luxury New York Group represented the sellers in the sales transaction. 

    “My firm is thrilled to have been a part of the sale of the Maidstone,” Solomon said. “The hotel has a rich history and is a beloved institution in the community. We’re confident that the new owners will continue to maintain and enhance its legacy.”

    Spain’s Jon Rahm wins his first Masters with torrid final round

    AUGUSTA, Ga. — Jon Rahm turned the longest day into his sweetest victory, starting Sunday with a four-shot deficit in the morning chill and finishing in fading sunlight as the fourth Spaniard to become a Masters champion.

    Rahm closed with a 3-under 69 to pull away from mistake-prone Brooks Koepka. He won by four shots over Koepka and 52-year-old Phil Mickelson, who matched the low score of the tournament with a 65. He is the oldest runner-up in Masters history.

    It was Mickelson who declared Rahm would be among golf’s biggest stars even before the Spaniard turned pro in 2016. Rahm now has a green jacket to go along with his U.S. Open title he won in 2021 at Torrey Pines.

    “It was obvious to me at a very young age that he was one of the best players in the world even while he was in college,” Mickelson said. “To see him on this stage is not surprising for anybody.”

    Rahm made up two shots on Koepka over the final 12 holes of the rain-delayed third round and started the final round two shots behind. He seized on Koepka’s collapse and then surged so far ahead that Mickelson’s amazing closing round — the best final round ever at Augusta National for the three-time Masters champion — was never going to be enough.

    Nothing was more satisfying than an uphill climb to the 18th green to claim the green jacket on a day when Spanish stars aligned. Sunday is the birthdate of his idol, the late Seve Ballesteros, and this is the 40-year anniversary of Ballesteros winning his second Masters title.

    Rahm embraced his wife and two children, and as he walked toward the scoring room, there was two-time Masters champion José María Olazábal in his green jacket for the strongest hug of all and a few words that included Ballesteros.

    “He said he hopes it’s the first of many more,” Rahm said in Butler Cabin. “We both mentioned something about Seve, and if he had given us 10 more seconds, I think we would have both ended up crying.”

    Sergio Garcia was the low amateur in 1999 when Olazábal won his second green jacket, and then Garcia won in 2017, the year Rahm made his Masters debut.

    Not to be overlooked was just registering to play this week. Caddies are assigned numbers on their white coveralls in numerical order for when their players check in. Rahm’s caddie, Adam Hayes, had No. 49 — 4/9, the birthday of Ballesteros.

    Stars aligned, and Rahm played some world-class golf. And to think he began the tournament with a four-putt double bogey on the opening hole.

    Rahm won for the fourth time this year — just as Scottie Scheffler did a year ago when he won the Masters — and reclaimed the No. 1 world ranking from Scheffler.

    This Masters had a little bit of everything — hot and humid at the start, a cold front with wind that toppled three trees on Friday, putting surfaces saturated from rain on Saturday and a marathon finish Sunday as Rahm and Koepka went 30 holes.

    Koepka helped to pave the way with one miscue after another, losing the lead for the first time since Thursday afternoon when he chipped 20 feet past the hole from behind the par-3 sixth and made his second bogey. There would be more to come.

    “Just some days you have it, some days you don’t, and today wasn’t one of those,” Koepka said. “But I feel good, and I expect to be there the other three (majors).”

    Koepka went 22 consecutive holes Sunday without a birdie — from the par-5 eighth hole in the morning of the third round until the par-5 13th in final round. By then, he was three shots behind and Rahm all but sealed it with his next shot.

    He hit a low cut around a tree from right of the 14th fairway and it caught a slope just right on the 14th green and fed down to 3 feet for a birdie. When Koepka three-putted for bogey, it was a matter of finishing.

    Rahm hooked his tee shot into the trees on the final hole and didn’t reach the fairway. No matter. He played up the fairway, hit wedge to 3 feet and tapped in for the victory.

    The leaderboard was littered with major champions and a tinge of Saudi-funded LIV Golf. Mickelson and Koepka both are part of the rival circuit. Former Masters champion Patrick Reed, another player who defected to LIV, closed with a 68 and tied for fourth with Jordan Spieth (66) and Russell Henley.

    Tiger Woods wasn’t around for the finish. He withdrew Sunday morning before the third round resumed, saying plantar fasciitis in his foot was aggravating him. Woods also withdrew after three rounds of the PGA Championship last year in similarly cold, windy conditions at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

    Mickelson barely contends over 54 holes in the 48-man LIV Golf league. And then he played like the six-time major champion who two years ago became the oldest major champion at age 50 when he won the PGA Championship.

    He stuffed his tee shot on the par-3 sixth, birdied the seventh and then finished in style. His approach to the 17th came within inches of going in for an eagle, and he pumped his first when his 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th dropped for a 65.

    It matched his lowest score ever at Augusta National — he shot 65 in the opening round in the 1996 Masters and was at his Sunday best.

    “Unfortunately it wasn’t enough, but it was really a lot of fun for me to play at this level again, and it’s encouraging for me going forward the rest of the year,” Mickelson said.

    Rahm called it an incredible day, especially with his father coming over from Spain. He concluded his remarks at the trophy presentation on the 18th green by saying, “Happy Easter. And rest in peace, Seve.”

    He then made the sign of the cross, kissed his finger and pointed to the blue sky.

    The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, successor to 2017’s Breath of the Wild, is out soon. And while there’s a big fancy collector’s edition of the sequel available, which includes a book, Nintendo is this week taking the time to revisit the original, releasing for free a book called The Explorer’s Guide.

    It used to be the whole point of the special Explorer’s Edition of the game, but with Breath of the Wild now six years old Nintendo figures we’ve all explored quite enough, thank you, and so instead of the book helping us find our way around a post-apocalyptic Hyrule for the first time, it can now help us remember the good times instead.

    As Polygon report, Nintendo have released the book as a pdf on their company site, and you can read/download it here. It’s…OK? I mean it’s typical limited edition filler, in that it’s not useful enough to be a true guide, there’s not enough art for it to be an art book and it’s not specific enough to be the game’s manual.

    It’s still a nice little thing to thumb through though, even after all these years, though weirdly not the whole book has been uploaded. For reasons known only to Nintendo, pages 73-84 are missing, an omission that’s not for plot reasons because there are spoiler warnings present on pages that did make the cut (If you’ve got this book at home from 2017 and can tell us what’s on the pages, that’d be great!).

    If you want to check it out, note that most of the book is dedicated to explaining the broad concepts of Breath of the Wild’s open world design to newcomers, and so may not be the most interesting thing you’ll read today, but the intro section is still fun, if only because Nintendo had to try and wrangle the series’ convoluted timelines and history into a couple of concise pages!

    Have you ever waited for a few hours to ride a popular roller coaster? Perhaps. But I can guarantee you that nobody has ever waited the entire life of the known universe. Well, unless you are the unlucky digital folks stuck on a new wild and complicated Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 creation from YouTuber Marcel Vos.

    Released in 2002, Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 is a popular PC theme park builder that is still actively played and modded by players in 2023. But there are also purists who don’t play the game using fancy mods or open-source ports. And Marcel Vos, a popular RCT2 YouTuber, is one of these players who enjoys experimenting with the original 20-year-old version of the game. A few years back he made a coaster that takes 12 years to complete. But now his newest creation—impressively created without mods—is a working roller coaster that will take over 3 quinvigintillion years in real life to complete. Bring some snacks.

    To pull off this amazing and hard-to-comprehend task, Marcel Vos first built a really, really, really long roller coaster that had almost no hills or dips. This means the coaster’s train moves very slowly around the entire thing. Then, when it reaches the end, it reverses due to specific ride options. That return trip takes even longer. And it has to take this very long journey seven times before the ride is considered finished. All in all, that ride takes over two years. That’s long, but not the universe-spanning ride the headline of this article promised.

    That is achieved via 253 smaller roller coasters that are synced—using in-game options in RCT2—with the larger, very slow coaster. So once that big roller coaster finishes one ride—which remember takes two years—one of the smaller coasters will start its ride and that coaster is synced to a coaster that will then complete a ride, and so on and so on. What this all means is that by the time you reach the final roller coaster in this nightmare chain, it will take much longer than just two years to complete. In fact, the actual number is so large I can’t even write it all out.

    Marcel Vos does a good job in the video demonstrating just how impossibly large this number is, pointing out that if you were to count a single atom every year of everything that exists in the known universe, you’d be done right around the time Vos’ “Universe Coaster’’ would finally be ending its hard-to-comprehend journey. Yeah, you definitely want to pack a lot of snacks before hopping on this ride.

    The pandemic triggered massive changes in the job market. While tech and information industries saw a spike in demand, companies went on a hiring frenzy as the hospitality and food space cut back on jobs amid lockdown. Now, the tables have turned.

    As the world emerged from the pandemic, hospitality began rebuilding its workforce and outpaced all other industries for the first half of 2022 and has now become the leading employer in the U.S. as of January 2023. Meanwhile, jobs in the tech and information world declined, according to data from The Wall Street Journal.

    “The sectors that are seeing above-average layoffs are those that saw explosive head-count growth after the pandemic,” ZipRecruiter chief economist Julia Pollak told the outlet.

    In essence, the widespread layoffs in tech are in part due to the widespread hiring that happened in 2020. Although the layoffs and hiring freezes might ignite panic, the shift signals that the job market for tech is actually restoring to pre-pandemic levels.

    Tech giants like Amazon, Meta, Microsoft and Google have all trimmed their workforces over the past year as demand wanes and economic conditions remain uncertain. Conversely, the hospitality industry, including bars and restaurants, has bounced back and become the fastest-growing employer in the U.S.

    A close second is the healthcare industry, which also saw a major hit during the pandemic. In January alone, hospitality and healthcare added 207,000 workers, making up nearly half of the month’s private sector growth of employment, according to The Wall Street Journal data.

    Eisenhower Park restaurant project getting IDA incentives | Long Island Business News

    A project to create a new restaurant and catering venue in Eisenhower Park has received preliminary approval for economic incentives from the Nassau County Industrial Development Agency. 

    The $5.3 million project from Manhasset-based EGB Hospitality aims to renovate the building formerly occupied by the Carltun, which closed in 2022 after 27 years of operation. 

    The new Grand Lannin venue, will have a restaurant called The Devereux, named for Eisenhower Park’s Red Course designer Devereux Emmet. Expected to open in May, the facility will include the restaurant, catering venue, outdoor patio, golf course concessions and a cigar club, according to an IDA statement. 

    The county is hoping the new hospitality offering will help attract professional golf tournaments, as the last pro event was held at the Red Course in 2008. 

    “The upgrades proposed at Eisenhower Park are exactly what is needed to make it a competing location to attract major golf tournaments and other events,” Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman said in the statement. “We’re excited to see this project come to fruition and look forward to the positive impact it will have on Nassau County and its residents.” 

    The project is expected to create 20 construction-phase jobs, 30 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs within one year of completion and five additional FTE jobs within two years of completion with salaries ranging from $60,000 to $175,000 per year, according to the IDA statement. 

    “The benefits of this project are difficult to overstate,” Nassau IDA Chairman Richard Kessel said in the statement. “Not only will it bring dozens of well-paying jobs to our residents, but it will also see a tremendous uptake in tourism and income to Nassau County. The NCIDA looks forward to this project’s next steps and bringing yearly professional golf events back to Long Island.” 

    Elias Trahanas, partner of EGB Hospitality, said the priority for the Long Island-based company is bringing top-quality experiences to the community. 

    “Located in the very center of Nassau County, Eisenhower Park is the perfect place for people inside and outside the community to come together, whether they attend a PGA event or want to enjoy a day golfing and dining with friends,” Trahanas said in the statement. “We could not have done this without assistance from the NCIDA, and we are grateful for the help they provided in making this project a reality.”
