  • Burbank Boys Hoops Handles Host Hoover

    On the same floor that the United States 1984 Olympic men’s basketball team practiced, the Burbank High boys’ team used to hold off host Hoover.

    That gold-medal winning squad was coached by Bob Knight and featured three would-be Hall of Famers – Michael Jordan, Chris Mullin and Patrick Ewing, and the floor also witnessed the Bulldogs outlast the Tornadoes 63-53 in a Pacific League game on Tuesday evening.

    With the victory, Burbank has claimed four straight and will host Crescenta Valley on Thursday and also visit Burroughs on February 3.

    Paced by senior shooting guard/small forward Kaleb Walker’s game-high 22 points and senior forward Blake Finnigan’s 13 points, Burbank used a 22-point second quarter and led 37-28.

    The Tornadoes, who converted 20 of 48 for 41.6 percent, drilled seven three-pointers in the opening half but drained one from three-point range in the second half.

    Steve Eshleman is Burbank’s head coach and expected the game to be somewhat close.

    “We always get a tough game from Hoover. Again, a victory by committee for us. Everybody chipped in,” he said.

    The defense rose to the occasion for the Bulldogs (18-7 and 7-5 in league) as they played in-your-face and challenged Hoover on every possession.

    “They made seven threes in the first half and only one in the second. Our defensive intensity really picked up in the second half and that ignited our break,” Eshleman pointed out. “Got out to a safe cushion in the fourth and brought it home. It was a great road win for our kids.”

    Junior Alex Patatanyan tallied a team-best 19 points for Hoover with 10 points coming in the second hal.

    Sophomore Ilan Genachte Le Bail added 11 points with nine scored in the opening half on three from three-point range for the Tornadoes.

    Burbank junior point guard Avo Papikyan scored seven of his nine points in the initial frame and Walker tallied four points.

    Patatanyan chimed in with seven points in the first period and also nailed his only three-pointer.

    Burbank started motoring in the second quarter as it made eight of 16 field goals for 50 percent and senior guard Cris Ong tossed in all of his seven points that included a trey.

    Finnigan dropped five points in the frame and included the first of his two three-pointers.

    Finnigan’s hoop with 2:20 remaining in the frame increased Burbank’s lead to 33-26.

    Senior shooting guard/small forward Anthony Jawiche accounted for four of his eight points.

    The Bulldogs, who shot 48.9 percent on 24 of 49, limited the Tornadoes (8-17 and 1-10 in league) to 13 points in the third quarter while scoring 17 as Walker tallied nine points and Jawiche added four points.

    Hoover outscored Burbank 12-9 in the fourth period and made a charge but ultimately came up short.

    Jawiche’s basket with 5:08 left in the third period made it 44-30 and Walker’s field goal pushed Burbank ahead 52-37 with 1:13 on the clock.

    In that quarter, Walker had seven points and 16 points in the second half.

    Hoover drew within 56-47 and 6:19 left in the fourth quarter on Patatanyan’s basket.  

    Senior forward Giordan Lewis accounted for four points in the first half for the Bulldogs.

    Burbank made 11 of 17 from the free-throw line for 64.7 percent while Hoover hit five of seven for 71.4 percent and also outrebounded the Tornadoes 31-25.

  • Burroughs Boys Basketball Earns 61-56 Win Over Host Hoover

    When it mattered most, the Burroughs High boys’ basketball team rose to the occasion.

    A 20-point fourth quarter was the catalyst the Bears needed when it took on host Hoover in a Pacific League game, and the result was an impressive 61-56 victory on Thursday night.

    Senior wing Evan Lanier, who also grabbed eight rebounds, scored nine of his team-best 14 points in the fourth period as the Bears made seven of 11 shots for 63.6 period in the frame.

    Lanier’s hoop with 7:25 left in the fourth made it 45-40 and Lanier’s basket with 2:10 on the clock increased the lead to 53-49.

    When senior wing Ethan Cooper’s three-pointer made it 56-51 with 1:32 remaining, the victory was almost assured.

    Coming into the fourth quarter, the score was 43-40 in favor of the Bears, but the Tornadoes were coming off an 18-point third period and had some momentum and the crowd behind them.

    Senior wing Kane Le-Cabico, who finished with four caroms and four assists, added five of his 11 points in the fourth quarter.

    Jason Weatherall is Burroughs’ first-year head coach and knows the season is going to be a battle and very much a learning situation.

    “We had to play with poise to pull out the game. They are learning how to make a play when it is needed,” he said. “Tough game. Tough opponent, but we found a way.”

    Behind five players scoring in the first period, Burroughs (4-6 and 1-2 in league), which made 23 of 52 for 44.2 percent from the field, led 17-13 as junior wing Will Rowan and senior guard Nico Meza each tallied five points, and each nailed a three-pointer. Rowan also drilled a trey in the third quarter.

    Neither team was especially productive in the second quarter, but the Bears marched ahead 28-24 after scoring 11 points and the Tornadoes tallying nine.

    Hoover (3-7 and 1-2 in league), which made 17 of 58 for 29.4 percent, woke up in the third period as senior Shannan Boutwell scored four of his game-high 17 points and sophomore Edward Gevorgyan scored five of his 14 points.

    “Right now we don’t have a dominant player yet, just a bunch of guys chipping in and making the boat move forward,” Weatherall said of his squad.

    Senior guard Nathan Rodriguez scored seven points, senior guard Teagan Bradford added six points, and Cooper scored five points for the Bears.

    Junior Alex Patatanyan tallied 12 points and also nailed a three-pointer and scored seven points in the fourth quarter for Hoover.

    Burroughs outrebounded Hoover 42-33 and converted eight of 15 for 53.3 percent from the free-throw line while the Tornadoes hit 17 of 26 for 65.3 percent.

    The Bears made seven three-pointers, and the Tornadoes hit five.

  • Burbank Wrestlers Defeat Host Hoover 69-9

    It was super quick as the Rio Hondo League match took an hour for the Burbank High wrestling team to defeat host Hoover 69-9 on Wednesday night and raise its record to a stellar 3-0.

    Of the eight contested matches the Bulldogs captured six and also picked up six forfeited matches.

    Burbank head coach Jonathon O’Brien liked what he saw from the entire team.

    “I was really proud of our entire lineup, including our girls, who made the commitment to make their weight class even though they knew the possibility of wrestling was slim,” he said of the dozen ladies on the squad.

    O’Brien, who has been the coach for four years, was impressed by what he saw from a couple on the team.

    “Roni Manas [at 106 pounds] and Artem Akimov [150 pounds] both earned their first varsity wins of their careers tonight,” he said. “They’ve been working hard for months so it was rewarding to see them get their victory.”

    O’Brien added: “We also were pleased with the [exhibition] performance of [sophomore] Logan Rodriguez [215 pounds], who wrestled at an urgent tempo we felt matched the energy we try to bring to every match,” he said.

    Freshman Manas won via a pin late in the first period and at 120 pounds, junior Kevin Krikor was also victorious by a pin in the opening period.

    Junior Akimov won after three tough periods and sowed his grit and toughness.

    At 165, senior Ronel Hakoupian emerged with a triumph via a pin and 1:37 left in the first period.

    At 190 pounds, junior Andre Takhmasian won via pin with just twenty-seven seconds left in the first period.

    At 285 pounds, sophomore Evan Der Galestanian prevailed with a victory by way of a pin as fifty seconds remained in the first period.

    At 113 pounds, sophomore Kaiden Takeuthi won by forfeit, as did sophomore Alex Periera at 126 pounds. At 138 pounds, sophomore Arayik Vardnayan also claimed a win by forfeit.

    At 157 pounds, sophomore Hovhannes Mkoyan won by forfeit and at 215 pounds, senior Albert Airapetian also won by way forfeit. Freshman Martin Aghabaday was a winner by forfeit.

    At 132 pounds, senior Tyler Huo lost across three rugged periods while at 144 pounds, senior Narek Danielian lost via a three-period decision.

    Assistant coach Romney De La Rosa is in agreement with O’Brien.

    “Our entire team performed great tonight. I’m excited to have such a strong group of freshmen who are enthusiastic about wrestling for Burbank,” he said. “What we’re seeing is consistency across the lineup, which is exactly what our coaching staff expects.”

    De La Rosa also shined a light on a couple of wrestlers.

    “Two standout performers came from Artem, who earned his first win in his first varsity start, and Andre, who secured a pin. Andre continues to improve each week,” he said. “We’re very pleased with the progress he’s making, highlighted by his third-place finish at the Newbury Park Invitational last weekend.”

  • Burbank Football Blasts Hoover 69-0

    Quickness on the perimeter and quick-strike scoring ability dominated the action when the Burbank High football team hosted Hoover at Kemp-Kallem Field on Friday night.

    Quarterback Deshawn Laporte unloaded seven touchdown passes and Elijah Pendelton grabbed three and Chase Miles snared two while Exodus Freeman and Tyler Hudson each caught one en route to a 69-0 thrashing in a Pacific League game.

    Burbank football head coach Hector Valencia was pleased at the lopsided triumph.

    “Defensively I liked the reaction,” he explained. “Players got their assignments and played fast because they knew what was asked of them. A few big [scoring] plays got called back, but the team reacted by just doing another one.”

    The Bulldogs played offense, defense and special teams with focus and determination.

    “All three teams did great. Special teams as well,” Valencia said. “With some big returns and capitalizing on a kick down field and getting it back.”

    The Bulldogs took a 14-0 lead into the second quarter and after tallying five touchdowns led 49-0 at the intermission.

    Burbank (6-2 and 4-1 in league) tacked on three touchdowns in the second half and kept Hoover (2-6 and 0-5 in league) from getting into the end zone.

    Laporte’s 26-yard scoring pass to Miles (three catches for 61 yards), a senior wide receiver/cornerback, with 1:43 left in the first period made it 14-0 and capped a 65-yard, four-play march.

    When Laporte tossed a 46-yard scoring toss to Pendleton (94 yards on four receptions), a senior wide receiver/cornerback, with 8:48 remaining in the second half, the Bulldogs were in charge 28-0 after the march consumed 46 yards on two plays.

    Laporte added an 11-yard strike to Pendleton thirty-five seconds later as the lead swelled to 35-0 and ended a 26-yard, two-play trek and came after a kickoff that the Bulldogs recovered after the Tornadoes were slow in reacting to field it.

    When Freeman (50 yards on two catches), a senior wide receiver/slotback, grabbed a 10-yarder from Laporte midway through the second frame, Burbank led 42-0 on the one-play, 10-yard drive after Pendleton’s 49-yard punt return.

    Laporte’s 26-yarder to Pendleton with twenty-two seconds left in the same period made it 49-0 and followed a 75-yard, nine-play drive.

    “I liked how we came out as a team and executed,” said Laporte, a junior who completed 12 of 19 attempts for 269 yards and no interceptions.

    With a running clock for much of the second half, Laporte drilled Miles with a 20-yard bullet as 9:45 remained in the third quarter as Burbank’s advantage became 56-0 and climaxed a five-play, 65-yard march.

    Hudson (64 yards on three catches), a junior wide receiver/outside linebacker/safety, snared Laporte’s last scoring pass, a 45-yarder with 3:47 left in the third period as the margin became 62-0 that concluded a 47-yard, two-play excursion.

    Burbank turned in two interceptions into touchdowns as senior wide receiver/cornerback Noah May-Vaughn returned an errant pass into a 58-yard score with 9:03 remaining in the first period for a 7-0 lead and after senior wide receiver/linebacker/safety Johnny Sale added a 52-yarder early in the second quarter it became 21-0.

    Burbank’s final tally of the evening was a 10-yard burst from junior running back/linebacker Troy Wells with 8:55 left for a 69-0 cushion and finalized a two-play, 38-yard march.

    Burbank’s next action will be Friday versus Glendale at Moyse Field in a league game with a 7:00 p.m. start.

  • Burroughs Football Rallies In Second Half Against Hoover

    Spotting the hosts a 10-point halftime advantage looked precarious for the Burroughs High football team on Friday evening.

    It turned out just fine as the visitors erased that deficit versus Hoover and tallied three second-half touchdowns and in the process secured a 21-10 decision in a Pacific League game.

    Burroughs first-year head coach Jose Calzadilla explained what happened during the second half turnaround.

    “Our kids were disappointed with their effort in the first half. But some adversity can be a good thing. The ability to overcome that is a lesson every team should learn,” he said. “Our guys did that tonight. I’m proud of them.”

    Calzadilla added: “The kids came out in the second half and did what they had to do to win,” he said. “That’s all I could ask for.” 

    Over the last two games, Burroughs has forced five turnovers and the result is two victories.

    “I felt our guys stepped up, limited their mistakes, and tackled well. Hoover had run five different offenses this year so we were not sure what we were going to see,” he explained. “Having patience on our side benefited us and our guys did a great job adjusting. Getting five turnovers in two games helps build confidence.”

    All three Burroughs scores were garnered via the ground attack and was spearheaded by quarterback Brandon Chapparo, who scored one touchdown in the third quarter and one in the fourth period.

    Chapparo’s 12-yard scoring run came with 9:08 left and trimmed Hoover’s lead to 10-7.

    The score came after senior wide receiver/cornerback Brandan Smith intercepted senior quarterback A.J. Francisco that gave the ball to Burroughs (3-4 and 3-1 in league) at the Hoover 29-yard line.

    Four plays moved the ball 17 yards before Chaparro, a junior, who carried the ball 14 times for 88 yards, waltzed into the end zone.

    A time-consuming 90-yard, 11-play march saw the Bears run the ball each play as junior running back/cornerback Sho Fujita, who added a game-best 109 yards on 20 carries, had five rushes for 29 yards and Chapparo added three carries for 35 yards including the score for a 21-10 advantage as 6:26 remained.

    The middle tally was made possible after a fumble on a pitch from Francisco to junior fullback/outside linebacker Dveen Aghanian as Burroughs received the ball at the Hoover 38.

    The key gain on the six-play march was Chapparo’s 11-yard keeper and Fujita delivered four rushes for 14 yards before junior running back/cornerback Carson Shrode, who finished with 38 yards on eight carries, burst into the end zone from 13 yards with 4:06 left in the third quarter for a 14-10 lead.

    “Our run game continues to evolve. We need to find new ways to help our quarterback,” Calzadilla said. “That’s on me. I will handle that.”

    Chaparro passed for 115 yards on 11 of 19 attempts but had two interceptions.

    Hoover (2-5 and 0-4 in league) took a 3-0 lead on a 28-yard field goal from junior wide receiver/kicker Jack Coopersmith with 4:18 remaining in the initial period.

    The 61-yard, eight-play march was assisted by a 46-yard double pass from Francisco to junior wide receiver Angelo Bailey who then drilled junior quarterback/free safety Elliott Nussbaum that placed the ball on the Burroughs 26-yard line.

    The Tornadoes moved in front 10-0 with 43 seconds left before halftime as Francisco hit Aghanian with an eight-yard pass that completed a two-play march and was made possible after senior wide receiver/cornerback Arman Asaduriyan picked off Chapparo and returned the errant toss 51 yards.

    Recchia said his unit played well.

    “We stuck to our game plan. I feel we played great in the first half. They had one big play to start the game that put them in field goal range, but from that moment our defense did a great job limiting opportunities,” he said. “Their touchdown came after a turnover that gave them the ball inside our 10-yard line, which is hard for any team to pull off a stop.”

    The next game Burroughs plays will be Muir which is undefeated in league on Thursday with a 7:00 p.m. start time.

  • Burroughs Boys Water Polo Falls To Hoover 15-10

    An early first quarter lead evaporated but a late rally in the fourth period made it somewhat interesting for the Burroughs High boys’ water polo team in a Pacific League match versus host Hoover.

    On Tuesday afternoon, the Tornadoes took out the Bears 15-10 despite allowing six goals in the last frame.

    Nicolas Oporta, who led the Bears (3-8 and 0-2 in league) with four goals, had three tallies in the fourth quarter and Lucas Spratt, a junior varsity player who was called up to the varsity, accounted for two goals in the final period.

    Armen Tarakhchyan and David Tarkhchyan each powered in five goals for the Tornadoes (9-7 and 2-0 in league).

    The pair combined for six of the nine goals in the second half as the hosts outshot the visitors 19-13 over that stretch. Hoover outshot Burroughs 32-26 overall.

    Robert Tovmasyan added two goals for Hoover with one coming in the third and fourth periods.

    The score after one period was 2-2 and 6-3 in favor of Hoover at the intermission. The Tornadoes marched in front 11-6 after three frames.

    Oporta added a clever follow-up from five feet with 4:13 left making it 12-6.

    Oporta’s five-footer with 3:27 remaining sliced it to 13-7.

    When Oporta nailed a 12-footer with 1:49 left on the ticker, the Bears came within 14-8.

    Spratt’s 12-footer with 1:49 on the clock sliced the advantage to 14-9 and Spratt’s 14-footer narrowed the margin to five goals.

    In the opening frame, Matthew Rodriguez slipped in a seven-footer as 5:23 was left for a 1-0 advantage.

    When Nasev found the range from 16 feet and 4:00 left on the clock, the Bears pulled ahead 2-0.

    The Bears’ only goal in the second period came from Lincoln Morrow as 7.8 seconds remained and the visitors trailed 6-3.

    The lone goal in the third frame for Burroughs came with 3:10 on the clock as Oporta unloaded a short toss that trimmed the lead to 8-4.

    Armen Tarakhchyan’s five-foot goal with 2:19 left in the first period cut the lead to 2-1 and David Tarkhchyan’s five-meter penalty toss with 12.9 seconds remaining evened it at 2-2.

    With 4:48 left in the second period, a 10-footer from Arthur Tarkchyan saw the Tornadoes dash ahead 3-2.

    Armen Tarakhchyan’s point-blank shot thirty-nine seconds later made it 4-2 and with 2:59 left Tigran Gharibyan’s 10-footer increased the lead to 5-2.

    David Tarkhchyan’s tally with 1:49 remaining in the first half made it 6-2.

    The Tornadoes outscored the Bears 5-1 in the third period as Arthur Tarkhchyan drilled a 10-footer with 5:32 left for a 7-3 cushion and Tovmasyan added a 12-footer with 4:20 remaining for an 8-3 cushion.

    David Tarkhchyan tossed in a five-meter penalty throw with 2:58 remaining on the ticker for a 9-4 lead.

    Armen Tarakhchyan threw in a seven-footer with 1:06 left for a 10-4 advantage and David Tarkhcyan had a breakaway tally with 37.5 seconds left for a seven-goal margin.

    In the fourth period, Armen Tarakhchyan had a five-foot goal with 3:48 left for a 13-6 lead and added a seven-footer with 33.8 seconds left that made it 15-9.

    Tovmasyan’s five-footer with 5:20 remaining made it 12-4 and David Tarkhchyan’s six-footer with 2:12 on the clock made it 14-7.

  • Burbank Defeats Hoover In Five Sets

    Two minutes shy of two hours is what it took for the Burbank High girls’ volleyball team to vanquish host Hoover in five sets in a Pacific League match on Tuesday afternoon.

    The match went in favor of the Bulldogs who took the first two sets before the Tornadoes rallied to claim the next two.

    Both teams played well, and each showed signs that more good things are in store.

    Officially, the scores were 25-18, 25-14, 20-25, 22-25, 15-11.

    Carmen Camacho-Platas is the Burbank varsity head coach.

    “I thought Hoover was scrappy and had a lot of hustle. I told my girls right before the fifth set that so far, Hoover wants this win more than they did and it was showing in the dropped sets,” she said. “I think that lit a fire which led to them upping their intensity to win the last set. I was happy to see us running our middles much more than we have in other matches, so we’re making progress.”

    The decider was tied at 2-2 before the visitors went on a 7-1 run to lead 9-3 on an ace from senior outside hitter Lorin Azizian.

    Burbank’s advantage became 10-5 on a kill from sophomore opposite hitter Natalie Eguiazarian but Hoover charged back and came within 12-9 on a push out of bounds from senior setter Grace O’Connor.

    The Bulldogs righted the ship and pulled ahead 14-10 on a spike from Azizian and Azizian’s blast clinched the set and match.

    Burbank (6-9 and 1-1 in league) seized a 7-1 lead in the opening game as freshman outside hitter Emerson Chong nailed a winner.

    Junior middle blocker Madison Yosh’s push extended the cushion to 10-3 and Chong’s ace made it 12-5.

    Yosh’s service winner made it 15-7 and Azizian’s spike saw the Bulldogs race to a 17-11 advantage.

    Erika Kirakosyan’s bullet witnessed Hoover come within 18-13 as Burbank asked for stoppage in play.

    Chong’s service ace handed the Bulldogs a 21-14 lead and Chong’s service winner made it 23-14. The initial set went to Burbank on a kill from Azizian.

    The Bulldogs grabbed the second set after leading 4-2 on an ace from junior libero Chloe Gallagher and back-to-back aces from Gallagher that made it 6-2 and 7-2 as Hoover (0-4 and 0-2 in league) asked for a breather.

    Yosh’s kill made it 11-3, Yosh’s stuff extended the lead to 14-6 and Yosh added three service winners to make it 17-6 as Hoover requested a time out.

    Gallagher’s consecutive aces made it 23-12 and 24-12 and a tapper from Yosh finalized the game.

    Burbank controlled the early portion of the third set as the visitors led 5-2 on an ace from Azizian.

    Hoover fought back and drew within 8-6 on a kill from Isabella Trejo-Galvez. The Bulldogs led 10-8 on a winner from Azizian and scurried in front 15-12 on a push from Eguiazarian.

    A kill from Hoover’s Sona Yegnanyan made it 18-17 in favor of the home team and Yegnanyan’s service ace increased the lead to 21-18.

    Trejo-Galvez’s ace made it 24-20 and a hitting miscue by Azizian saw Hoover win its first set.

    Burbank was in control early and often during the fourth set as it led 7-4 on a kill from O’Connor.

    It became 12-8 on an ace from Azizian but Hoover charged ahead 16-15 on an ace from Yegnanyan.

    Harutyunyan’s back-to-back aces made it 21-18 and 22-18 as Burbank asked for time.

    Kirakosyan’s stuff saw the Tornadoes inch within 24-22 and Peyton Braun’s service ace sealed the deal as each team won two sets.

    Stephanie Yost is the head coach and Director of Volleyball Operations and was equally pleased.

    “I love that the girls dug deep today,” she said. “The girls trusted Coach Carmen and played great under her instruction and made the corrections that were needed to get the win.”
