    With these striking additions to its travel-inspired home furnishings line, Louis Vuitton takes interior design to luxurious—and literal—new heights

    The vibrant red armchair you see here began its life as a tennis ball—if only in the hive mind of Yael Mer and Shay Alcalay. Raw Edges, their London-based studio, conceived the piece (4) plus a matching sofa for Louis Vuitton’s Objets Nomades—the luxury house’s collection of furniture, art, and objects made by an illustrious array of design firms—which debuts new additions this month during the Milan Furniture Fair.

    To the Raw Edges team, Objets Nomades signifies “fun, sculptural pieces,” says Mer. “So it is quite hard to sit in the studio and think how we can come up with a new design.” Instead, the staff takes “creative breaks” from ongoing projects to dream up designs without explicit brief or purpose. Familiar fuzzy orb, meet wonderfully curvilinear seating arrangement. “There was something so cute and satisfying about this model,” adds Mer, “that we couldn’t just let it stay on the shelf.”

    As objets nomades suggests, other creators have likewise drawn inspiration from the whimsical and well traveled. For Vuitton’s recently opened restaurant in Chengdu, China, the Swiss firm Atelier Oï fashioned a room-spanning chandelier in coral-orange leather; now, they’ve replicated the twisted beauty (3) at a more intimate scale. And for a literally soaring metaphor, Oï turned to Latin America’s quetzal, basing a 22-pound mobile (2), also in leather, on the sacred bird’s spectacular plumage; the fanned art can “pivot slightly and hover masterfully,” as Oï says, over summer dinner parties.

    Milan’s local talent is part of the menagerie too. For Flower Tower (1), a blown-glass column nearly six feet tall and meant to evoke a cityscape, Alberto Biagetti and Laura Baldassari of Atelier Biagetti nodded to Vuitton’s history: From an isometric perspective, you can see the fashion brand’s geometric floral motif (trademarked as part of its monogram in 1896) take luminous shape. Along with special pieces that are more form than function—like a mercury-blob sofa and “cocoon” chandelier (neither pictured) by Campana, based on their own previous designs for Objets Nomades— the lighting and furniture comprise Vuitton’s largest works, some of which are made-to-order (prices upon request).

    A new generation of moms is emerging. A generation that was shaped by Amy Poehler in Mean Girls (2004) spreading the gospel of being a “cool mom.” A generation that’s been inundated by mommy influencers who make childbearing chic. A generation influenced by Rihanna’s belly-baring pregnancy outfits.


    Oh, to be a mom at the dawn of Rihanna’s motherhood era. Rihanna’s pregnancy and subsequent second pregnancy have signaled the vibe shift. Riri and other celebs like EmRata, Megan Fox, and even Kylie Jenner prove that you don’t have to give up your personality, your playfulness, or your coolness to be a mom. In fact, being a mom makes you cooler.

    Women are waiting longer to settle down and have kids — meaning we can discover our genuine personalities and live adult lives rather than becoming mothers and only mothers in our early 20s. And when you think about it, the mainstreaming of the empowered mom is a relatively recent phenomenon.

    It’s only been 51 years since Title IX was passed. And it would have been 50 years since Roe v Wade this year … if it hadn’t been overturned in 2022. Harrowing. But the Pew Research Center reports that in 22 out of 250 metro areas, women under the age of 30 earn as much — or more — than their male counterparts. Though the pay gap persists, culture is moving forward as gender roles shift and archaic notions of who — and how to be — are slowly fading away.

    Pop culture being the mirror of our shifting social norms, it’s no surprise that celebrity moms reflect how millennial mothers are changing the game.

    Consider: Keke Palmer’s SNL hosting debut and simultaneous pregnancy announcement. And, of course, Rihanna’s casual and pregnant Super Bowl performance and BritishVogue cover — famously featuring her “pussy facing the world.” Basically, Rihanna is the blueprint for millennial moms — leading to a generation of cool moms. God bless the child(ren).

    Yet despite all these shifting norms and progressive culture moments, patriarchy persists. According to data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, in the United States, women performs an average 4.5 hours of unpaid work a day, compared to 2.8 hours for men daily.

    Unpaid labor such as housework eats up far more than mere time. It’s a mental strain and added responsibility that impacts women’s mental health. According to the New York Times, “It’s not unpaid labor itself that is problematic, research has found. Rather, it’s all the baggage around it — whether it conflicts with someone’s other responsibilities, like paid work, and whether it’s what someone wants to be doing.” Apparently, women feel pressure to keep their homes clean and feel judged if they don’t. Men, are free of this invisible burden.

    So, as we advance culturally, and move back-and-forth politically, the little things matter, too. Who does the housework? How they do it. After all, a millennial mom doesn’t have the time on her hands that a 1950s/Don’t Worry Darling housewife did. So housework has to be taken care of more rapidly and efficiently — yet done well enough to keep that visitor-ready home.

    It’s no wonder that working moms have forged a fresh retail sector: elevated house and home care products. Made by moms, for moms, this emerging industry is making housework an elevated pursuit. You truly can romanticize anything. That’s right — with CleanTok booming and “That Girl” wannabes the-world-over posting videos of their daily reset routines. (Reader, that’s just an pretty way to say cleaning!) Women have attained the impossible: made unfair, unpaid labor into something that’s aesthetically pleasing.

    According to Snipp, millennial moms prioritize brands that portray authenticity, meaningfulness, uniqueness, and innovation. They support brands that promote safety, healthiness, nutrition, and education. That’s why women-founded brands that are targeted to moms are so much cooler than anything else on the market. The girls that get it, really do get it.

    Aside from bingeing Netflix, creating the picture-perfect home may have been the pandemic’s most popular habit.

    Whether it’s organizing a pantry or adding on a home office, gym or spa-like bathroom, homeowners have been upgrading and expanding their spaces at record rates for over two years

    Although Americans are no longer sheltering at home, the recent rise in mortgages rates has encouraged more people to stay put and renovate rather than relocate.

    Even in the face of inflation, ongoing supply chain issues and other factors, the vast majority of homeowners are proceeding with their planned home improvement projects in 2023, according to a Houzz survey of nearly 4,000 homeowners conducted in October.

    At the same time, Instagram and other social media platforms have raised the bar by presenting an endless array of covetable spaces.

    For most people, decorating is a daunting task, yet hiring a pro is out of reach.

    Few Americans can afford the high-end look depicted online, which often comes with the help of an A-list designer and hefty budget. The average cost to hire an interior designer can vary greatly depending on the region and scope and whether it’s based on a flat rate, hourly fee or percentage of the project, although well-known designers easily charge in the five or six figures.

    “It’s a time-consuming and overwhelming process for a lot of homeowners,” said Wayne Gao, co-founder and CEO of Australia-based Furnishd, which offers virtual consultations for $850 per room or $3,250 for the whole house. “It also costs a fortune.”

    Virtual design services offer real-world pricing

    That’s where virtual services can add value at a fraction of the cost, added Leo Seigal, co-founder and CEO of The Expert. “It’s almost like insurance to make sure you are making the right decision.”

    The Expert was started by Seigal and Los Angeles-based interior designer Jake Arnold in early 2021. The service offers one-on-one consultations with over 150 big-name decorators including Arnold, Martin Brudnizki, Brigette Romanek, Ashe Leandro and Rita Konig. Prices range from $250 for a 25-minute call to up $2,000 for an hour.

    Of course, online design help is not new. Even before 2020, there were services like Havenly and Homepolish. Retailers such as West Elm and Restoration Hardware offer those services, as well. However, now A-list decorators are getting into the game.

    “The pandemic turbocharged interior design and created the environment to get the designers to do this in the first place,” Seigal said.

    Americans are also prepared to shell out more based on what they see on sites like TikTok, Instagram and Facebook. Consumers are now conditioned “to believe they can get whatever they want, whenever they want,” according to an analysis by McKinsey & Company.

    However, home upgrades are another level of spending altogether.

    “Any renovation has the potential to get really expensive,” Seigal said. “You can’t really afford to make a mistake.”

    For consumers who want help but may not have the means or access to a full-service design firm, “we are bridging the gap,” he said.

    Other top designers, too, have spun off their own virtual consulting service to meet the demand for a less expensive and more accessible option.

    Marianne Brown, the principal designer and owner of W Design Collective, also now offers virtual design help starting at $500 for a one-hour call, in addition to the high-end remodels and full-service projects she’s known for, which cost substantially more.

    “I couldn’t even afford myself,” she said, referring to the latter.

    More recently, however, Brown said she’s wrestled with the effect that the constant stream of home upgrades on social media has on homeowners and women, in particular.

    “At least when Vogue tells you your skinny jeans are ‘out’ you are only donating a $50 pair of jeans to Goodwill,” she said. “But when Architectural Digest tells you white kitchens are ‘out,’ you are hiring a painter for $8,000 to repaint your kitchen cabinets.”

    Brown advises homeowners to resist the urge to keep up with the Joneses. Rather, she says consider how you will use the space and make sure it reflects your personality. “What have I always loved? Where do I come from and where have I traveled? Stay true to who you are.”

    I feel a bit like a broken record when I say this but as an editor, I basically shop all day for a living. And while the majority of that shopping is obviously for the many stories I write, I also inevitably find things for myself along the way. My finds this fall have been particularly great and I thought it’d be fun to share them with you in case you’re looking for gifts or cool things for your own life.

    For the purpose of organization, I’ve broken my special fall finds (many of which can be used during the winter and year-round) down into the categories of fashion, beauty, and home. Some are very useful and some are just for fun. Either way, they come highly recommended by yours truly (and I’m admittedly picky).

    Alphagreen Group, a house of brands focused on the health and wellness e-commerce sector, has acquired organic aromatherapy candle brand 96North.

    Alphagreen Group has a growing portfolio of brands within the wellness niche and is looking to increase their acquisition pipeline as other aggregators have decreased their acquisitions. 96North is a US-grown brand that recently expanded into the UK. They have been selling on the Amazon platform since 2020 and rank in the top 1% of jar candles.

    96North is currently on track to achieve 260% growth in the 12 months after acquisition. With an increase in stock and marketing spend, which Alphagreen were keen to provide, the brand can successfully scale on Amazon and within other channels. Since the acquisition, 96North has doubled in the number of customer reviews on the Amazon platform, which is a vital algorithmic element for organic ranking.

    With Alphagreen Group’s focus on consumer wellness areas of sleep, pain, and anxiety, the aromatherapy niche is naturally a sector of interest for the house of brands. Alphagreen is also committed to providing sustainable and environmentally safe products to answer the ethical requirements of the modern wellness consumer.
