Five Below Partners With Sheriff’s Office for Fill the Cruiser Toy Drive Event

Five Below will host its first annual Community Christmas Fill the Cruiser Event on Friday, November 21 and Saturday, November 22 in partnership with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. Kids can snap photos with Santa Claus. They’ll also give away free Mr. Beast toys during the two-day event.

Santa arrives Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Shoppers who buy any item and drop it in the police cruiser parked outside will get the chance to win a $25 gift certificate.

All items collected in the cruiser will go to children in need within Wayne County before Christmas. The goal is to gather donations through customer purchases at the store.

This toy drive represents a collaboration between the discount retailer and law enforcement to support families during the holiday season. Five Below is sponsoring the activities and giveaways throughout the weekend.

Winter on the Waterfront returns to the Independence Seaport Museum

The Independence Seaport Museum will present Winter on the Waterfront on Saturday, Dec. 6, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The seasonal program, included with regular museum admission, takes place at 211 S. Columbus Blvd.

Throughout the day, visitors can take part in craft activities such as creating Seaport Snowflakes, tying knot-style ornaments and assembling gingerbread-style boats in the museum’s boat shop. The historic cruiser Olympia will also be open for self-guided holiday tours.

This year’s schedule also includes a Cannoli Flavor Contest in partnership with Holy Cannoli. Attendees will be able to sample proposed flavors and vote for the option that will be featured in January.

All activities are included with admission, giving visitors opportunities to explore the museum, participate in crafts and take part in the day’s seasonal offerings.

Cincinnati airport expects more than 200,000 Thanksgiving travelers

HEBRON, Ky. — The Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport urged travelers to pack their patience ahead of one of the year’s busiest travel periods.

More than 200,000 travelers are expected to pass through the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport for Thanksgiving

Wednesday, Nov. 26 and Sunday, Nov. 30 are expected to be the busiest days

All passengers are advised to arrive in the TSA line at least two hours before a flight within the U.S. and three hours before an international flight

AAA said more than 1 million Kentuckians are expected to travel 50 miles or more between Tuesday, Nov. 25 and Monday, Dec. 1
More than 206,000 passengers are expected to travel through CVG between Sunday, Nov. 23 and Sunday, Nov. 30, according to an airport release, with Wednesday, Nov. 26 and Nov. 30 expected to be the busiest days.

The airport recommended the following tips for travelers to ensure as smooth a travel experience as possible:
- All passengers are advised to arrive in the TSA line at least two hours before a flight within the U.S. and three hours before an international flight.
- Check TSA’s website for is allowed through security.
- The security checkpoint now offers CLEAR eGates, speeding up the security screening process through biometric software matching the traveler’s facial image to their identity document and boarding pass.
- Expected TSA wait times, parking availability and food options can be found by visiting the airport’s website.
- Passengers needing special assistance, such as wheelchair assistance, should contact their airline in advance.
- The airport offers parking reservations in CVG Terminal Garage, CVG ValuPark and CVG Economy Lot. Spots can be reserved online.
- Those who are picking up someone at the airport should wait in the Cell Phone Lot. Drivers will not be able to wait at curbside; it’s reserved only for active loading and unloading.
CVG said it’s offering more than 950 flights during the Thanksgiving holiday travel period to more than 50 nonstop destinations. Among the most popular spots include Orlando, New York, Boston, Chicago, Dallas and Las Vegas.

The busiest time for departures is expected to be between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m., with arrivals remaining steady from mid-morning through 11 p.m.

According to an AAA release, more than 1 million Kentuckians are expected to travel 50 miles or more from home between Tuesday, Nov. 25 and Monday, Dec. 1, an increase of about 1.6% from last year.

Children’s Advocacy Group Urges Families Not to Buy This Type of Toy for the Holidays

With the holiday season around the corner, a proliferation of robots are on sale—but unlike the Furbies and Poo-Chis of the past, today’s robots are powered by AI. And consumer advocates are warning parents to steer clear.

Children’s advocacy group Fairplay published an advisory on Thursday urging families to resist the urge to purchase toys powered by AI LLMs.

“AI toys use the very same AI systems that have produced unsafe, confusing, or harmful experiences for older kids and teens,” the advisory reads. “Yet, they are being marketed to the youngest children, who have the least ability to recognize or protect themselves from these dangers.”

The advisory offered four other reasons to avoid AI toys. It warned that they can prey on children’s trust, blurring the lines between corporate-made machines and caregivers, as well as disrupt children’s understanding of healthy relationships. It also noted that the toys can collect and potentially sell sensitive data even “when they appear to be off.” It finally warned that AI toys can monopolize attention, displacing foundational activities like “actual imaginative, child-led play.” The advisory was endorsed by 160 organizations and individuals including groups like the nonprofit Center for Digital Democracy, Better Screen Time, and Mothers Against Media Addiction.

The advisory falls short of actually naming and shaming specific AI-powered toys or brands. But it comes about a week after U.S. PIRG Education Fund released its annual Trouble in Toyland report that assessed four different AI-powered toys. PIRG’s report noted that the toys gradually lost the ability to steer away from inappropriate topics over the course of longer conversations. The Kumma teddy bear, made by Chinese company FoloToy, was reportedly the worst offender. Running on OpenAI’s GPT-4o, it discussed everything from how to light matches and where to find knives, to various sexual fetishes, Futurism reported.

Shortly after the report was published, FoloToy confirmed to PIRG that it suspended sales of all of its toys, and an OpenAI spokesperson said the company “suspended this developer for violating our policies.” OpenAI is currently embroiled in numerous lawsuits alleging the chatbot encouraged discussions that led to suicide and mental breakdowns, according to The New York Times.

‘Can I take a picture with y’all?’: Shaq photobombs family Christmas portraits for holiday surprise

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, unaware that Shaquille O’Neal soon would be there.

The NBA legend made a surprise appearance at a JCPenney photo studio in New York on Wednesday as families posed in front of a mantle, fireplace and Christmas tree backdrop for holiday portraits.

The picture on the Christmas cards they’ll soon mail to loved ones will include a holly jolly, 7-foot-1 photobomber.

“He was like, ‘Can I take a picture with y’all?’” Empress Polite said of Shaq crashing her family’s photo shoot. “Yeah!”

And O’Neal wasn’t quite finished spreading the early holiday cheer.

“He gave us a $1,000 gift card to go shopping,” Polite added.

Each of the three families that were arranged to be surprised in the studios at the time, all with children who are members of the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, were presented with JCPenney gift cards by O’Neal. Each family, under the impression they were there simply for a holiday photo shoot, wore matching Christmas pajamas for the occasion.

“The unexpected nature of that provided a tremendous surprise for our families, and the youngsters, they loved it,” said Daniel Quintero, executive director of the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club. “And he’s a bigger-than-life figure, so at the end of the day, those responses are priceless.”

T’was the month before Christmas, and O’Neal was in town to host a meet-and-greet at The Mall at Bay Plaza in the Bronx to promote his new namesake cologne “Shaquille O’Neal Eau De Toilette,” which launched exclusively at JCPenney in September.

Fans lined up hours in advance outside JCPenney to get a photo with the Basketball Hall of Famer and four-time NBA champion, along with an autographed box of his new fragrance.

First in line was a longtime fan from Great Neck, New York, – who arrived at 11 a.m., six hours before the scheduled start time, to secure one of only 50 wristbands for the event.

“He’s an MVP,” he said, “and I always wanted to meet him.”

As did many others, who were unable to land a wristband but lined the store’s fragrance and jewelry sections to catch a glimpse or get a handshake as O’Neal made his entrance through the crowd.

“What’s up, New York? How you guys doing?” O’Neal said when he arrived. “I definitely did not expect a crowd this big. I appreciate you. I love you guys for coming out…Now let’s have some fun.”

The fun continued when O’Neal made his way to the store’s third-floor portrait studio. Shaq-a Claus was comin’ to town — via an escalator instead of a chimney.

Inside one of the studios, Polite and her mother and two siblings were wearing matching reindeer pajamas for what they said was their first family photo shoot. They were posing for photos when they were told a social media team was coming to the studio to get footage.

The last member of that team to walk in had to duck under the doorway to enter safely.

“It was very grand. It was just very…shocking cause he’s super tall,” Polite said, adding that her younger brother is Shaq’s biggest fan. “It just felt amazing to meet him.”

O’Neal — a native of Newark, New Jersey, and alumni of the Boys & Girls Club — then made his way down the hall to the other studios, quietly sneaking behind one family as they were smiling for the camera.

“He understands the importance of helping families during this time. ‘Tis the season, right?” Quintero said. “So, him coming out, giving of his time, his effort and resources is very important and empowers our families obviously to do better.”

And to send out Christmas cards with a photo of Shaq joining the family.

“They came out so lovely,” Polite said. “With him and without him. They’re all just beautiful.”

Holiday tree featuring thousands of origami works opens at NYC’s American Museum of Natural History

NEW YORK (AP) — A beloved Christmas tree tradition is returning to Manhattan for the holiday season next week. No, it’s not the towering spruce at Rockefeller Center, which is lit in early December.

The comparatively smaller Origami Holiday Tree that’s delighted crowds for decades at the American Museum of Natural History opens to the public on Monday. The colorful, richly decorated 13-foot (4-meter) tree is adorned with thousands of hand-folded paper ornaments created by origami artists from around the world.

This year’s tree is inspired by the museum’s new exhibition, “Impact: The End of the Age of Dinosaurs,” which chronicles how an asteroid crash some 66 million years ago reshaped life on Earth.

Talo Kawasaki, the tree’s co-designer, said the tree’s theme is “New Beginnings,” in reference to the new world that followed the mass extinction.

Located off the museum’s Central Park West entrance, the artificial tree is topped with a golden, flaming asteroid.

Its branches and limbs are packed with origami works representing a variety of animals and insects, including foxes, cranes, turtles, bats, sharks, elephants, giraffes and monkeys. Dinosaur favorites such as the triceratops and tyrannosaurus rex are also depicted in the folded paper works of art.

“We wanted to focus more not so much the demise of the dinosaurs, but the new life this created, which were the expansion and the evolution of mammals ultimately leading to humanity,” Kawasaki explained on a recent visit.

The origami tree has been a highlight of the museum’s holiday season for more than 40 years.

Volunteers from all over the world are enlisted to make hundreds of new models. The intricate paper artworks are generally made from a single sheet of paper but can sometimes take days or even weeks to perfect.

The new origami pieces are bolstered by archived works stored from prior seasons, including a 40-year-old model of a pterosaur, an extinct flying reptile, that was folded for one of the museum’s first origami trees in the early 1970s.

Rosalind Joyce, the tree’s co-designer, estimates that anywhere from 2,000 to 3,000 origami works are embedded in the tree.

“This year there’s a lot of stuff stuffed in there,” she said. “So I don’t count.”

In 2024, holiday retail spending was anticipated to reach $30.4 billion in the Buckeye State by the Ohio Council of Retail Merchants, a 1.1% increase from 2023. According to data from the Federal Reserve, there was a 4.5% increase in retail sales at Ohio general merchandise stores last November and a 1.9% increase in December.

The National Retail Federation expects shoppers to spend an average of $890.49 per person on holiday gifts, food, decorations and other related options.

“The holidays are meant for joy, not financial stress,” said DFI Superintendent Kevin Allard. “Our Holiday Budgeting Guide is specially designed to help Ohioans take control of their holiday spending so they can focus on what really matters—making memories with friends, family and loved ones.”

According to a recent survey from NerdWallet, 31% of 2024 holiday shoppers who used their credit cards have yet to pay off their balances, while a lendingtree.com report showed 36% of Americans took on holiday debt.

Ohio’s budget guide is set to manage spending and address financial challenges head-on via budgeting techniques and safe online shopping practices.

I Keep Cooking Thanksgiving! Here’s the Best Holiday Meal Delivery

Making a full Thanksgiving feast for guests can be daunting, for some perhaps even terrifying. The world, and especially Hallmark movies, is full of holiday disaster stories: burnt turkeys, failed desserts, steamed hams. But I’m not bragging when I say that the first Thanksgiving dinner I prepared for my extended family—a little early, this year—was an unmitigated success.

My aunt couldn’t stop talking about the black pepper in the biscuits and the sage on the carrots. My uncle went in for the turkey and the apple-sausage stuffing. My father didn’t speak at all, unless prompted. He just ate and ate. This was a compliment.

But of course, I had cheated. I had ordered my Thanksgiving in the mail—one of the new breed of Thanksgiving meal kits.

The meal was genuinely home-cooked, of course, prepared mostly from scratch. But the entire seven-platter feast—its ingredients and recipes—had arrived two days before, in a box large enough to house a primal cut of beef. It was Thanksgiving in a box: a $200 “Chef’s Table Thanksgiving” meal kit available from sister meal delivery plans Sunbasket and Gobble.

The spread from Sunbasket was vast and generous. The table contained a nearly 3-pound roast of turkey, mounds of mashed potato, pebbled cranberry compote, roasted carrots dressed in miso-sage butter, brussels sprouts dappled with pecorino romano and pancetta, an endless platter of fennel-apple-sausage-stuffing, Gruyère black-pepper biscuits caked more than an inch tall, a tureen of deep brown turkey gravy, a ginger apple crisp waiting in the wings.

Sunbasket is among a new bounty of meal kit companies that aim to ease the stress of the holidays by doing the planning and the shopping for you—big meal boxes tailor-made for those who still want to make a home-cooked meal but for whom the prospect of planning a vast and complicated feast is prohibitive. In fact, two weeks later I cooked another Thanksgiving meal from Blue Apron, this time for my sister’s family.

Here was my experience with Sunbasket and Blue Apron—and some of the other Thanksgiving meal delivery options to get your whole Thanksgiving meal delivered to your home.

Blue Apron, one of the OG meal kits in the US, has undergone a wholesale transformation this year. One of the biggest changes is that subscriptions are no longer required, and à la carte meal ordering is possible—indeed, it’s now my favorite no-subscription meal kit offering. What this means is that for this Thanksgiving, you can order individual Thanksgiving recipe kits to prep fresh at home, without ever setting foot in a crowded grocery store.

That means roasted grape and goat cheese salad ($12), a big ol’ turkey breast with gravy and cranberry sauce ($50), rosemary herb stuffing ($15), a truly excellent casserole worth of truffle-oiled Southern mac and cheese ($20), almond apple crumb pie ($15), brown butter mashed potatoes ($8), challah rolls with maple ($8) and roasted brussels sprouts with pistachios, ($10). I made all of these recipes for my sister’s family and our parents, a little early this year—and it was a surprisingly delicious feast fit for at least eight people. Probably even 10, if you add an extra order of mashed potatoes.

Renton Salvation Army needs Thanksgiving food donations, says SNAP benefits still delayed for some

Renton, Wash. – The Salvation Army is stepping up the battle against food insecurity in the western Washington region.

What they’re saying:

The organization says local food pantries need help in restocking their supplies heading into the holiday season.

Leaders at the Renton Salvation Army location at 206 S. Tobin say the food has flown off the shelves in recent weeks, when families experienced a gap in SNAP benefits.

They say they are running low on some food items with less than two weeks to go until Thanksgiving.

“We filled up our freezer with turkeys,” said Captain James Parks at the Salvation Army Hope Market in Renton. “We’ll allow them to shop at our Thanksgiving wall. They can choose some of the items they want.”

James says the food bank is a “client choice pantry” that allows people to pick up what they need for their families.

He says they are getting ready to distribute food for the upcoming holiday weekend. Seasonal donations, like boxes of stuffing and canned yams, are shown on the “Thanksgiving Wall”, pictured below.

Because there is so much uncertainty surrounding SNAP benefits due to the government shutdown, James says the need is greater than ever.

“It is very difficult to keep the shelves full already,” said James. “The past Monday, we saw there were many new clients coming in. Not only were they new clients, but some were clients we hadn’t seen in 3–4 years.”

Instead of around 150 people coming through the pantry daily, James says the number of clients has gone up to around 200 a day. He says that’s a 30% increase, and he feels it hasn’t slowed down.

“We haven’t seen people receiving their benefits yet. There are still people who are coming who are scared because there are delays in the benefits.”

He says businesses are feeling pressure too, with the economy putting a damper on the number of rescue donations coming from partners as well.

“All these are rescue items,” he said, pointing to some baked goods. “The grocery stores are already tightening their belts, you know, purchasing less, which means there is less waste.”

James is putting out a call to the community for help. He says people can donate online at this link, or by dropping off goods in person in Renton. Soup, canned chicken and tuna and canned fruit are the most needed items at that pantry.

“Anybody who would like to drive by and drop those off would really be blessed,” he said.

James says the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign has also kicked off for the holiday season and that will, in part, help to fund food pantries just like the Hope Market in Renton.

He says more than 20 Salvation Army pantries and meal programs are operating across the Pacific Northwest.

“We want our community to know we are here for them,” said James.

He says they hope to hand out 400 turkeys at the Renton pantry along with other fixings before Thanksgiving.

Dayton RTA embraces holiday spirit with Christmas trolley

DAYTON, Ohio — For those looking to embrace the holiday spirit around Dayton this year, a historical opportunity is returning to the region.
What You Need To Know

The Greater Dayton RTA’s 77-year-old Christmas trolley, a 1948 Marmon-Herrington TC-48 #559, is returning for the Dayton Children’s Parade on Nov. 28

In the 1980s, the trolley was taken to the San Francisco Municipal Railway in California, but RTA CEO Robert Ruzinsky focused on reacquiring it in 2021

Following the parade, the trolley will be on display and offer free rides through downtown Dayton at specific events
The Greater Dayton RTA’s 77-year-old Christmas trolley, a 1948 Marmon-Herrington TC-48 #559, is returning for the Dayton Children’s Parade on Nov. 28 and several public events before Christmas.

As one of only five operable trolleys of its kind in the world, it is famous for its simulated fireplace, Santa seat and festive scenes gracing the exterior.

In the 1980s, the trolley was taken to the San Francisco Municipal Railway in California, but RTA CEO Robert Ruzinsky focused on reacquiring it in 2021. The RTA got it back in late 2021 and has worked to restore it through the RTA’s maintenance team, and it returned to the streets last year.

Following the parade, the trolley will be on display and offer free rides through downtown Dayton; however, the vehicle is not ADA accessible.

Public events will occur outside Wright Stop Plaza, at the corner of Main and Third streets, on the following dates and time:
- Saturday, Nov. 29, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
- Saturday, Dec. 6, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
- Saturday, Dec. 13, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Meghan Markle Decorates for Christmas In New Festive As Ever Video

Meghan Markle is getting into the holiday spirit a little bit early this year.

Her lifestyle brand As Ever shared an Instagram video on Saturday, November 15, with a first look at the Duchess of Sussex, 44, putting up her Christmas decorations. In the footage, Meghan beams with delight in a shimmering brown ensemble while hanging up a white stocking.

Kate Winslet, Hannah Waddingham, Dan Smith and Chiwetel Ejiofor are set to join Kate and her husband, Prince William, to deliver festive readings at the fifth annual event, where the princess will also deliver a speech on the theme of “The Power of Love and Togetherness.”

“This year, the Service will bring people together to celebrate love in all its forms — whether it’s love within families, through friendships, across communities or even through powerful moments of connection with strangers. In a world that can often feel fragmented and disconnected, love is the force that reconnects us all – spanning generations, communities, cultures and faiths,” a statement read.

Meghan and her husband Prince Harry were most recently spotted at two separate high-profile L.A. events on November 8. The Sussexes supported their friend Serena Williams at the Baby2Baby Gala in West Hollywood, where the tennis star was given the Giving Tree Award “for her fierce commitment to uplifting children and families and her powerful advocacy for maternal health,” per the organization.

Meghan and Harry, 41, also joined A-listers such as Justin Bieber, Mariah Carey, Kyle Richards, Kathy Hilton and Gayle King by making an appearance at Kris Jenner’s James Bond-themed 70th birthday party. Jenner and her daughter Kim Kardashian originally shared photos with Meghan on Instagram, but any trace of those pictures were later removed from the family’s social media.

Royal expert Tom Sykes later reported that Harry and Meghan had reportedly checked “no” on a photo consent form they received before the party, and thus apparently did not want any pictures taken of them to be shared.

The royal expert clarified that Harry and Meghan were not “particularly bothered” by the pictures ending up on social media, though the Jenner-Kardashian family still took them down out of respect.

I’m a Smart-Home Writer and This Is How I’m Automating My Holiday Parties

There’s an automated solution, though. For my latest parties, I brought the HP Sprocket Photo Booth Machine ($600), and it was a hit. It’s a 21-inch-tall, portable photo booth that both automatically prints 3 x 4-inch pictures and lets you download digital versions via a QR code. I love that you can create events on the device and set up customized filters—mine had the word “Soupsgiving” on the bottom, though it was in an incredibly small font compared to the regular filter designs—and you can also add settings like how many prints of one picture guests can print. We left the default setting of two on for the soup-themed Friendsgiving, but I think I’ll bump it up to at least three for future gatherings. Make sure to stock up on HP’s Zink paper packs ($40 for 50) for the photo booth to print with, especially if it’s a big gathering. It will need both Wi-Fi access and a power outlet.

How to Automate Your Appetizers

Feeding a crowd is hard. Feeding a crowd that includes some serious allergies and dietary restrictions doesn’t make it any easier. In the spirit of automating everything I could, I turned to ChatGPT to come up with my appetizer for a group that featured two vegetarians and someone whose allergies include avocado, beans, shellfish, and eggs. (Getting those two sets of friends their protein needs at the same time has a singular overlap in the Venn diagram of what they can all eat: tofu.)

ChatGPT did a good job brainstorming some possible options, and when I asked for a holiday angle, it came up with new options that were nice and seasonal. I chose to go with the lowest-lift option—pomegranate and ricotta crostini—but the baked brie bites were a big contender too. I was able to have this digital conversation and get the recipes all on ChatGPT’s free tier, but you can hit the paywall when you ask too many questions or ask things that need more research from the artificial intelligence.

How to Automate Your Cooking

Fellow WIRED reviewer Matthew Korfhage is currently testing two different robots that will cook your dishes for you, but in the meantime, the closest I’ve found is the 10-in-1 Ninja Foodi PossibleCooker Pro ($119). You can choose from options ranging from sear and slow cook to sous vide and even bake. It turned my broccoli-cheddar soup experiment (I was on a quest to replicate my favorite Panera soup for Soupgiving) into a one-pot dish where I could sauté my onions, stir up my béchamel, and then mix in all my ingredients and let it simmer until done. It even comes with an integrated utensil.

It was really helpful to use in an already busy kitchen, and I imagine it would be indispensable for big, Thanksgiving-style dinners where the stove and oven are monopolized. While I still had to do the cooking, I was able to hang out in my own little spot and let the PossibleCooker help me. It has a timer in the front to help remind me how long I’ve been cooking on a setting, though I do wish there were a medium setting (your choices are low and high for the cooktop settings).

Automate Your Food Disposal

There are a lot of food scraps when you’re cooking for events like Thanksgiving and holiday dinner parties. I really loved grabbing the canister from the FoodCycler and bringing it next to where we were cooking soups so everyone could throw their food scraps in as we went. When it’s full, just set it in the machine and it will grind-and-dry the scraps (or leftovers!) into a sort of nutrient-rich meal that can be mixed in with potting soil or sprinkled on your lawn. I have the new FoodCycler Eco 5, and WIRED reviewer Kat Merck recommends the FoodCycler Eco 3 as one of her favorite home food recyclers.

What Else I’m Testing This Holiday Season

The holiday season is only just starting, and I’ll be testing more gadgets and gear all season long. Here’s some of what I’m testing next:

The Bartesian Cocktail Maker ($349): This cocktail maker promises to be the Keurig of cocktail machines, with capsules for cocktail mixes instead of coffee. You’ll need to bring your own liquor, but once you fill up the included containers with the liquid, the machine should be able to take it from there. I’ll be testing some of the fun holiday cocktails too.

Holiday Pop-Up Bars Launch Across Metro Detroit with Themed Drinks and Food

Over 10 holiday pop-up bars have opened across metro Detroit through late November, as per WXYZ. These spots span from Downtown Detroit to Royal Oak. They serve themed cocktails and food until Dec. 31.

Park 600 at the Royal Park Hotel began its makeover today. An upside-down Christmas tree now hangs from the ceiling, surrounded by lights and garlands. The bar operates Thursdays through Saturdays on a first-come-first-serve basis, plus Monday, Nov. 24, Wednesday, Nov. 26, and Dec. 28-31.

Cadillac Lodge and Chalet 313 have returned to Campus Martius and Cadillac Square. Both serve drinks with and without alcohol. Cadillac Lodge also has food. They’re open Wednesday through Sunday.

Ale Mary’s Beer Hall in Royal Oak becomes Jingle on Nov. 15. Terry’s Terrace in Harrison Township gets the same concept that day.

Sippin’ Santa at The Skip inside The Belt takes a tropical spin on the season. It runs from Nov. 18 through Dec. 31. Hours are Tuesdays-Thursdays and Sundays from 4 p.m. to midnight, while Fridays and Saturdays stretch until 2 a.m. You can make reservations, and drinks arrive in various holiday mugs.

Weiss Distillery in Clawson brought back Weiss on Ice on Nov. 18. Their winter menu showcases drinks made with craft spirits distilled on-site.

Blitzen’s on Bagley in Southwest Detroit opens Nov. 19. Holiday-themed drinks flow daily.

Miracle pop-up launches Nov. 23 at two spots: The Oakland Art Novelty Co. in Ferndale and Dragonfly in New Center Detroit. Both operate through December 31. Dragonfly opens Tuesdays-Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., then Fridays and Saturdays from 5 p.m. to midnight. The Oakland runs daily from 5 p.m. to midnight.

The Iron Gate sits in Downtown Wyandotte on Biddle. It serves cocktails, shots and food. Reservations are encouraged, but bar seating works on a first-come, first-served basis. It’s open daily.

Octopus’ Beer Garden in Mt. Clemens will become the Octopus’ Christmas Garden. Their heated, enclosed patio will serve holiday-themed cocktails and food, though they haven’t announced when it starts.

A medley of tech gifts for everyone on your holiday shopping list

NEW YORK (AP) — It’s the most wonderful time of the year, unless you want to find the perfect gifts for tech lovers.

There’s a lot of slop to sift through as we get closer to the holidays, many interests to appeal to and a whole bunch of deals-that-aren’t-deals flashing before our screens. So here’s a guide — and some sales — to help you get started on your gift shopping journey.

For your gamers

The Nintendo Switch 2 was the biggest and most anticipated console launch of 2025, and if history is any indication, it will be increasingly harder to find as Christmas approaches. But for the gamers in your life — both young and adult — this is the gift to get.

Nintendo’s Black Friday deals for the console and games have been announced but the best bang for your buck may be the console bundles. The Switch 2 is still available as just the console only for $449 or bundled with Mario Kart World for $499. A new $499 bundle is now available where the console is packaged with Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Games retail for about $70 a piece, so you do save a little with bundles.

Need a new iPhone?

The iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro Max captured the headlines this year when the new lineup launched, but the base iPhone 17 received an upgraded camera (telephoto lens), more base storage and a longer battery life. Given the price for this model hasn’t changed, you’re straight up getting more tech for the same price. If your gift recipient’s current iPhone is a few generations behind, this is a good time to consider an upgrade.

What about AI? The iPhone 17 doesn’t make as many leaps into the technology as its predecessor, but the new iOS and processer prepares the phone for any advancements that may come in 2026. The iPhone 17 retails at $800.

Or maybe you’d like a foldable phone?

If you or someone in your life has ever been curious about a foldable phone, consider Samsung’s newest Galaxy Z Fold 7 model. This phone solves many of the issues users have been concerned about since fold phones hit the market: It’s much thinner and lighter than its predecessors — 0.17 inches thick when unfolded and less than half an inch folded — and it weighs slightly less than half a pound, impressive considering they boosted the size of all the screens.

But the price of a fold phone remains steep compared to the flagship iPhone and Galaxy devices. The Z Fold 7 currently is running a sale on its site but normally retails starting at $1,999.

Planning to shoot more video or pictures?

Typing on the go

Portability is core to the Logitech Pebble 2 wireless keyboard and mouse combo. This minimalist and highly functional offering by Logitech will satisfy on-the-go users who are looking for a silent, but still tactile, Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. It also offers a one-tap, multi-device switching option if you’ve already paired it with said devices — which include Android tablets and Apple iPads in addition to laptops — a great feature if you’re multitasking.

The combo comes in several colors and retails for $49.99. If you’re OK with black, Walmart has a deal for $42.
