When we think of hot tub holidays, we often think of relaxation and luxury. Being able to unwind and pamper yourself feels like it should be an expensive extra, but that’s not always the case.
As extravagant as having a personal hot tub might seem, there are actually some savvy methods to get that bit of extra luxury without adding much to the cost. You may not have to worry about breaking the bank to get yourself a slice of relaxation.
From strategic booking to alternative accommodation, here’s our guide to how you can enjoy hot tub holidays in the UK without worrying about your wallet.
Consider off-peak times
As much as we all love going away on bank holidays and during the summer, that’s not always the best choice. When it comes to keeping costs down your best chance is to look at times away from the peak popularity.
Booking your holiday for dates that avoid school holidays is an easy way to see the same accommodation options drop in price. You may have less competition when it comes to booking time off during off-peak dates as well.
Providers don’t want their accommodation sitting empty so if it’s an option, go for an off-peak time to get yourself a bargain.
Midweek getaways
Just like prices vary between peak and off-peak periods, the same is often true for the days of the week. Weekends will typically have higher accommodation costs associated with them, because that’s when most people will be aiming to book their holiday.
If you can plan for a midweek getaway instead this could work to your advantage. Not only will prices likely be lower, but you could also benefit from quieter surroundings than you’d get on the weekend. Places have a higher chance of not being crowded, so a midweek holiday could actually be even more relaxing than a weekend getaway.
Keep an eye out for last-minute deals
We all like to plan our holidays in advance. Sometimes, though, going for a last-minute deal can get a lot more for your money.
Just like providers don’t want empty accommodation during off-peak times, they would rather fill rooms for a lower price than let them go to waste. It’s a bit of a riskier strategy, as leaving things like booking train tickets until the last minute could see those prices go up instead.
Still, if you want a bargain hot tub holiday then it’s worth keeping your eyes open for any last-minute deals that might crop up.
Go for a self-catering option
As luxurious as the feel of staying in a hotel or spa is, that extra level of service adds to the price of your holiday. By sticking to self-catering options you can get the luxuriant feeling of a personal hot tub without having to pay quite as steep a price.
Whether it’s a rural cottage, countryside cabin, or a lakeside lodge, there are many excellent self-catering options to choose from around the country. Plus, preparing your own meals on holiday is another easy way to save on one of the main expenses.
Bring your own hot tub extras
It’s often the little extras that add onto the price of a holiday, so pack your own instead.
Bringing some scented candles and a comfy bathrobe of your own can help to enhance your hot tub experience without any additional charges. Just beware of bringing any bath salts or essential oils, as these can cause problems with the water in your hot tub.
Having a relaxing hot tub holiday doesn’t have to cost the earth. With some careful planning and a bit of flexibility, you can bag yourself an accommodation bargain. So, whether you’re looking for a countryside retreat or a coastal getaway, consider these tips when planning your next hot tub break.
Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said Tuesday that a closed-door deal for Taylor Swift to perform in the city-state ensured she would not perform in other Southeast Asian countries during her Eras tour.
“(Our) agencies negotiated an arrangement with her to come to Singapore and perform and to make Singapore her only stop in Southeast Asia,” he said at a press conference at a regional summit in Melbourne, according to Reuters.
The statement is the first confirmation from the city-state that the agreement for Swift to perform in Singapore contained exclusivity terms preventing her from performing in other countries.
On Monday, Edwin Tong, Singapore’s minister for culture, community and youth, declined to answer this question twice during a parliamentary session.
He also did not reveal the size of the grant to Swift, but stated the amount is “not anywhere as high as speculated.”
“Due to business confidentiality reasons, we cannot reveal the specific size of the grant or the conditions of the grant,” he said.
The issue gained prominence on Feb. 16 when Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin alleged Singapore gave Swift’s team between $2 million and $3 million per show, in exchange for not performing in other regional cities, according to The Bangkok Post.
The payment of a grant to Swift’s promoters has become a diplomatic thorn for Singapore, prompting criticism from neighboring countries for brokering a deal that shut them out from the highest-grossing tour of all time.
Member of the Philippine House of Representatives Joey Salceda said this “isn’t what good neighbors do” and added that such agreements are contrary to ASEAN principles, according to local media.
Lee on Tuesday disputed this characterization, saying, “It has turned out to be a very successful arrangement. I don’t see that as being unfriendly.”

During her first three concerts in Singapore, Swift asked her audience to applaud — first the locals, then those who had traveled from overseas to come to the show. In every instance, the applause of travelers was far louder.
Average daily rates at hotels in Singapore rose from $256 to $400 this week, with bookings up 92% from travelers coming from Malaysia, 111% from Thailand and 189% from Indonesia, according to the travel software company RateGain.
Swift’s tour prior to Eras, her Reputation Stadium Tour in 2018, included only one stop in Asia — Tokyo.
But her previous tours — Speak Now, Red and 1989 tours — included stops in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Philippines and Malaysia.
Singapore’s agreement has sparked a debate on whether this is just smart dealmaking or greed.
“It certainly was a bold, shrewd strategic move for Singapore,” said Selena Oh, a Singapore-based communications director.
But others say a winner-takes-all mentality harms regional tourism industries, which are still recovering from the pandemic, as well as fans who can’t afford the steep travel prices to see Swift in person.
“Slightly selfish with ONLY Singapore in mind and not the wider region. Clearly [Singapore authorities] aren’t very caring for anyone other [than] themselves,” said Christian de Boer, a Cambodia-based hotel managing director.
You have to make your calculations and work out what’s in Singapore and Singaporeans’ best interest.”

Singapore Minister for Culture, Community and Youth
Some liken the deal to how cities vie to host major sports events, such as the Olympics, the Super Bowl and the World Cup.
“Did anyone protest when F1 decided to come to Singapore? Is anyone pretending that there were no monetary or other material considerations?” said Irene Hoe, a Singapore-based editorial consultant.
Concerts — which see artists traveling from city to city to reach their fans — haven’t always been this competitive.
But that may be changing as experience-led tourism pushes concerts into money-making juggernauts, with fans willing to travel across continents to see their favorite artists.
During Monday’s Parliamentary session, Singaporean politician Gerald Giam asked Tong whether the Singapore government negotiated to make the island Taylor Swift’s only “blank space” in Southeast Asia, referencing her smash hit of the same name.
“And did it realize that this may be perceived by some of our neighbors as being mean?” he asked.
Tong replied, “You have to make your calculations and work out what’s in Singapore and Singaporeans‘ best interest.”

After nearly four years, the Eastern & Oriental Express is back on the rails. Â Â Â
The train, which is operated by the luxury travel company Belmond, this week welcomed its first set of passengers since it stopped running as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Â Â
The luxury train has been operating in Southeast Asia since 1993, when it first began shuttling travelers between Singapore and Bangkok. Â
Several key elements about the train have changed, however, including its route.
Now Thailand is out, replaced with two new journeys, which start and end in Singapore and explore different sides of Malaysia.
Arnaud Champenois, Belmond’s senior vice president of marketing and brand, told CNBC this is because travelers have changed in the past four years, with more preferring to explore destinations on a deeper level.
“The idea was to focus on one country here and to offer two different routes. So on the West Coast, we go through Singapore to Penang, and then Langkawi. And then on the other one, we go on the national park of Malaysia to really kind of get the jungle and the natural feel.”
The new routes are seasonal, with the “Essence of Malaysia” running from November to February, and “Wild Malaysia” from March to October.
The E&O’s new routes
“Essence of Malaysia” â passes through Kuala Lumpur, before reaching the islands of Langkawi and Penang
As a result of the new route, the train has received a Malay-inspired revamp, from the cabin interiors to the food. Dinner and afternoon tea service were created by Andre Chiang, the celebrated Taiwanese chef behind Singapore’s two-Michelin-starred Restaurant Andre, which closed in 2018.
Rates for four-day, three-night journeys start from$3,410 per person, which includes meals, beverages and scheduled activities.
This is less expensive than other trains that use versions of the “Orient Express” name, including the Belmond’s Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, which has run routes through Europe since 1982. Prices start from £3,530 ($4,430) per person for a one-night trip in a historic cabin, according to its website. Â
Accor’s “Orient Express La Dolce Vita” trains, which are set to start operating in 2024, are priced at â¬2,500 euros ($2,686) per person per night for a deluxe cabin, according to a press release. Travelers can pre-register for trips that mostly operate in Italy, according to its website.
Rates for Accor’s La Dolce Vita trains have increased since pre-booking first opened in December 2022, with stated rates then priced at 2,000 euros ($2,153) per person per night.
The Lunar New Year begins Saturday, Feb. 10, ushering in the Year of the Dragon. The lunar calendar, used in both Chinese and Vietnamese cultures, is divided into 12 segments, with each assigned an animal sign. The Chinese New Year celebration starts with the new moon on the first day of the new year and ends on the full moon 15 days later.
According to myths, the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac were selected through a race. This race is meant to create a time measurement for the people. There could only be 12 winners, and in order to win, the animals had to cross a rapid current river and reach the finish line on the shore.
There are many variations of this story. Some say that the Jade Emperor called a race of animals on his birthday to create the Chinese zodiac. Others say that it was the Buddha who did. The stories are essentially the same, excluding some minor details.
In Chinese astrology, each zodiac sign is associated with a fixed, or perpetual, element. Every year is associated with an element as well. Depending on what year you were born, you’ll get a unique combination of a sign and an element.

The flag of Wales, above features a dragon. It is one of three nations to have a dragon on its flag. The other two are Bhutan and Malta.
A dragon is a mythical creature that is believed to spit fire and have the ability to fly. Dragons are also storied to be powerful and to symbolize strength. In battle shields and flags, they have historically been used to intimidate opponents. Chinese dragons are often depicted among clouds or water, and represent wisdom and prosperity more than a battle threat.
Reality check
There are no creatures on Earth that can breathe fire but there are huge lizards known as dragons. The most fierce is the Komodo dragon that can weigh 300 pounds and be 10 feet long. If that’s not scary enough they are one of the few lizards to have a venomous bite, eat meat, have large claws and can reach speeds over 13 mph. Its large curved and serrated teeth are its deadliest weapon, and if it bites an animal its venom will likely kill it in a few days and it will track it down with its great sense of smell.
They are found in the wild on a few Indonesian islands and have a vulnerable conservation status.
There are several other creatures with dragon in their name such as bearded dragons, dragonfish and dragonflies. Flying dragons, or Draco lizards, don’t actually fly with wings; they are lizards that leap and glide up to 160 feet from a tree. There are 40 species and they are about 3 inches long.
In fiction
Dragons are popular in books, movies and recent TV shows such as “Game of Thrones.” Lithub.com, an online source of all things about literature, held a contest in 2022 to rank the 50 best fictional dragons. Here’s the top 10:
10. The Jabberwock, “Through the Looking Glass”
10. Tiamat, Dungeons & Dragons
9. Toothless, “How to Train your Dragon”
8. Mushu, “Mulan”
7. Yinglong, Chu C, “The Songs of Chu”
6. Zhulong, “The Classic of Mountains and Seas”
5. The Dragon, “Beowulf”
4. Vrtra, “Rig Veda”
3. Falkor, “The Never-Ending Story”
2. Haku, “Spirited Away”
1. Smaug, “The Hobbit”
1. Kalessin, “The Farthest Shore”
Dancing dragons
Dancing dragons can vary in size and length, starting from a few yards up to around 100 yards in length. Dragons bring luck to people. The longer the creature is, the more luck it will bring. Especially if one is touched by a dragon, and even better if touched by a Golden Dragon, good fortune and prosperity will be coming up in the year to come.

Chinese dragons are a luck bringer; they are venerated in the dragon dance – also called “Dragon Lantern Dance” – as is a traditional performance of the Han people. Dragon Dances are performed in almost all special festivals.
The Chinese dragons are associated with clouds and life giving rain; the original rain divinity provides for heavenly beneficence and fertility.
Types of dragons

With the Lunar New Year coming up on February 10, we’re resurfacing this story from our archives about using Chinese lanterns in floral arrangements. Consider yourself lucky if you come across the stems at your local flower shop—and bring them home to artfully decorate for the holiday.
Chinese lanterns have a mystique that may be lost on the innocent gardener. A couple of seasons after being planted and even forgotten, the large leaves and unremarkable white flowers of this ornamental plant emerge everywhere, even in a lawn. Yet, as fountains of papery calyces turn from green to a deep autumnal orange, the point of persevering with this aggressive spreader becomes clear.
Artist Fiona Haser Bizony, formerly of Electric Daisy Flower Farm in Bradford-on-Avon, harvested hers in September, then hung them indoors to dry for a couple of months, having first stripped the leaves. What do they go with? Everything.
Above: Chinese lanterns are also known romantically as Amours en Cage (Love in a Cage), because of the fruits that are revealed after the cases have dried out.
The notoriety of Physalis alkekengi is somehow compounded by the knowledge that it is a member of the nightshade family, which includes tomato, potato, and highly poisonous belladonna. Clearly, the solution for taming this orange “bladder” (from which its name derives in ancient Greek) is to grow it specifically for harvesting, all by itself. In a wilder garden, Chinese lanterns light up a hedge, when grown in rough grass around the perimeter. Sun preferred.
Above: Hedgerow gatherings, including spindle and hawthorn, joined by magenta chrysanthemums and Chinese lanterns.
In preparing her lantern harvest for an arrangement, Fiona simply took a look around. “This is the result of a lovely bit of foraging in the hedgerows around our new farm for autumnal foliage and berries,” she says. Being a highly innovative flower decorator (she’s Florist in Residence for the Royal Horticultural Society, among other honors), Fiona is not short of homegrown flowers to complement Chinese lanterns.

This Deviled Eggs Recipe is one of our favorites and it’s also very versatile. We love to add to it, or just serve it the way it’s written.
If you love deviled eggs, you MUST try these delicious Pimento Cheese Deviled Eggs. My family loves them and they have wonderful reviews.
❤️WHY WE LOVE THIS RECIPE
We love how versatile this recipe is and you an add what you love to it. We added bacon bits to these and a little greenery but you don’t have to. This is a great basic recipe for deviled eggs. Some people love to add a green olive to them, it’s all a personal choice, but this is a wonderful base recipe.
🍴KEY INGREDIENTS
Eggs
Sweet pickle relish
Mayonnaise
Yellow mustard
Pepper
Salt
Sugar
Paprika (To sprinkle on top)
SWAPS
If you love dill instead of sweet relish, then, by all means, switch that out. Add bacon to the top, an olive, use a different mustard (honey mustard is great), you can easily make this recipe your own.
🍽️HOW TO MAKE
These are not hard to make and the longest part of the process is boiling the eggs and peeling them.
COOKING STEPS
Step 1 Contrary to what many people say, I think adding the eggs to boiling, salted water, makes them easier to peel. Always have eggs at room temperature before boiling! Bring salted water (add about 1 tablespoon salt to water before boiling) to a boil and add eggs. I use a soup ladle to lower the uncooked eggs gently into the boiling water. Boil eggs on medium heat and boil one minute per egg. A dozen eggs takes twelve minutes boiling time. Remove pot from stove and put under running cold water. Peel immediately holding the egg under the cold water for smooth, peeled eggs.
Step 2 Once peeled, slice the eggs lengthwise and scoop out the center yolks. In a bowl combine egg yolks with ingredients and mash with a fork. Spoon filling into halves. Sprinkle eggs with paprika. Add bacon bits and parsley if you desire.
⭐TIP
If you are not a fan of vinegar, you can easily use pickle juice. We like to really fill our eggs with the mixture as you can see! You can use less in each egg if you like.

Spycams, as they’re called, are getting smaller, harder to find and easier to buy.
From alarm clocks to air fresheners, water bottles and toothbrush holders, cameras come embedded in common household items that seamlessly blend with home decor. They can be purchased in shops or online, and through retailers like Amazon and Walmart.
And rather than having to retrieve the camera to obtain the recording, owners can stream live images straight to their phones, said Pieter Tjia, CEO of the Singapore-based tech services company OMG Solutions.
Even worse, voyeurs can sell the footage to porn sites, where it can be viewed thousands of times.
It’s no wonder why websites, from YouTube to TikTok, are filled with videos of people recommending simple ways to find hidden cameras.
But do they these suggestions work?
To find out, Tjia and his team hid 27 cameras in a home, and then provided CNBC with commonly recommended devices to find them.
In total, CNBC conducted five rounds of tests to see which method was the most effective.
First, we examined the rooms using the easiest and cheapest method of all: the “naked eye” test.
My colleague, Victor Loh, went from room to room, noting that nothing seemed out of place or suspicious. After 20 minutes of searching, he found one camera embedded inside a working clock — tipped off because the time was wrong.
“I found one,” he said. “But it’s so well camouflaged.”
For this round, Victor downloaded a popular app called Fing, which scans Wi-Fi networks for cameras. He also used his phone’s flashlight to make it easier to see camera lenses, a common online recommendation.
The app showed 22 devices were connected to the home’s Wi-Fi — but no cameras.
Tjia explained that when members of his team set up the cameras in the house, they also set up a second wireless network. They then connected the hidden cameras to that network, bypassing the home’s main network.
“Even if we didn’t do this, the app would show cameras are in the house, but not where they are located,” he said.
Victor had better luck using his phone’s flashlight. With it, he found three more cameras — in a Wi-Fi repeater, a shirt button and a teddy bear — the last one, like the clock, catching his eye because of something amiss.
“It’s not grammatically correct,” he said of the bear’s T-shirt, before finding a camera behind one of its eyes.
Tjia said most hidden cameras are made in China, where, ironically, they are banned.
Cost: $25/year for app subscription | Cameras found: 3
With only four of 27 cameras located, it was time to turn to handheld devices designed to find hidden cameras — like a radio frequency detector which beeps when it’s close to a spycam.
Those work when cameras are turned on and connected to Wi-Fi, which means they won’t find cameras that use SD cards to store data, said Tjia.
They are also prone to false alarms, he added, as we watched Victor search the rooms, for the third time, through a barrage of piercing beeps.
The device also had a built-in lens detector, but the beeping proved so distracting that Victor didn’t locate a single camera with this device. It even beeped when he was in parts of the house that had no cameras at all, said Tjia.
Next up: a basic lens detector, which is cheap, portable and easy to use. The device emits infrared light, which reflects back from a camera lens as a red dot.
The problem? You must be close to the camera for it to work.
Lens detectors are a popular way to locate spycams, but CNBC only found two cameras with this one.
CNBC
Despite its popularity online, Victor found only two cameras with this device — one in an essential oil diffuser, and the other in a Wi-Fi mesh device.
Resembling binoculars, it also accentuates light that is reflected from a camera lens. However, this device works from a distance, allowing Victor to see cameras from across the room. It also works in brightly-lit or dark rooms, said Tjia.
“Oh wow,” said Victor, as he located cameras — in a tissue box and leather bag, with another buried between files under a desk. But he noted he needed to look straight into the lens to see it. “The angle matters.”
In total, he found 11 cameras with this device — more than all the other cameras found in the other test rounds, combined.
In total, Victor found 17 out of 27 cameras — not a bad result, but not a great one either, especially given the time he spent locating them.
“When you are traveling, you are really exhausted,” he said. “The last thing you want to do is spend … one hour scrutinizing every nook and cranny just to locate a camera.”
Social media posts about hidden cameras have increased nearly 400% in the past two years, according to the data company Sprout Social — with countless articles dedicated to finding a quick and easy solution to the growing problem.
But in this cat-and-mouse game, the cameras have the upper hand, said Tjia.
The detecting devices are getting better, but so are the cameras being hidden, he said.
The Israel-Hamas war is affecting travel across the Middle East and beyond.
International arrivals to the region grew in the fourth quarter of 2023 — mainly owing to an increase in visitors to Saudi Arabia — to a level that matched 2019 numbers, according to the travel data company ForwardKeys.
But it’s a far cry from the 30% rise in inbound travelers the region was expecting compared to 2019 levels, based on the number of airline tickets purchased before the Oct. 7 attack on Israel, the company said.
The outlook for 2024 doesn’t look much different.
“The forward-looking situation for arrivals to the Middle East in the first quarter of 2024 as of 6 Oct. — the day before the recent conflict started — was very positive, with tickets issued up by 49% vs pre-pandemic levels,” said Olivier Ponti, the company’s vice president of insights. “Fast-forward to 5 Jan. … with tickets issued now up by just 9% vs. 2019.”
Data showed air tickets to the Middle East purchased after the war fell 6% from 2019, with purchases to the United Arab Emirates down 8%, Morocco 15%, Turkey 17% and Egypt 21%. Tickets to Jordan were affected the most, falling 50% from 2019 levels, according to ForwardKeys.
Yet, the war’s effect on travelers extends far beyond the Middle East, according to a survey from Morning Consult.
The data research company surveyed some 2,200 Americans in November, with one in five people saying they have delayed, rescheduled or canceled a travel booking as a direct result of the Israel-Hamas war.
Respondents said these plans included visits to the Middle East (12%) and North Africa (7%), as well as Western Europe (14%), according to the survey. However, the bulk of the cancelations — 41% — were for trips within the United States, the survey showed.
Cancelations were high for domestic trips because most Americans travel within the 50 states, thus “there are simply more trips on the table to disrupt,” the report stated.
But as to why the war is making Americans feel uneasy about traveling in their own country, the report stated: “This is also emblematic of the larger tensions — for example, concerns related to antisemitism and Islamophobia — stoked by the conflict, and peoples’ resultant apprehension to venture far from home.”
A worldwide travel advisory, issued by the U.S. State Department less than two weeks following Hamas’ attack on Israel, may have affected traveler confidence as well, the report stated. Some 62% of respondents said they knew about it.
Worldwide Caution
“Due to increased tensions in various locations around the world, the potential for terrorist attacks, demonstrations or violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests, the Department of State advises U.S. citizens overseas to exercise increased caution.” — U.S. Travel Advisory issued on Oct. 19, 2023
In addition to weather and natural disaster alerts, the U.S. State Department Bureau of Consular Affairs’ account on X, formerly Twitter, has pushed out numerous security alerts in the months following the Hamas attack — for Cyprus, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Kuwait and Turkey, among others — as well as demonstration alerts for cities in Turkey, Malaysia, Colombia, Oman, Egypt, South Africa, the United Kingdom, Poland and Denmark, some connected to rising anti-U.S. sentiment over the war.
U.S. domestic travel in the fourth quarter of 2023 fell below 2019 levels, according to ForwardKeys. The downturn happened after the outbreak of the war, the company said.
The day before the attack, the travel outlook for U.S. domestic travel in the fourth quarter of 2023 was positive (+4%), but it ended down (-5%), “highlighting the impact of the ongoing conflict in Israel,” said Ponti.
Morning Consult’s survey indicated those who know about the war may be feeling less safe as well.
Some 52% of respondents with knowledge of the war said they viewed traveling to the Middle East as “very unsafe,” compared to 29% of those who had not heard about it.
Those who had heard about the war also indicated that they felt less safe traveling to North Africa and Eastern Europe too, the survey showed.
In a survey of 200 global travel specialists, 18% said uncertainty and safety issues in certain regions may discourage travelers from booking.
“After the October events in the Middle East, we did see a significant fall-off in trip requests to Israel and the surrounding region,”said Zicasso’s CEO Brian Tan. “Typically, when travelers have second thoughts about overseas travel to a certain region due to obstacles such as geopolitical conflict, we find that travelers will redirect to other international destinations.”
He said the war in Ukraine hasn’t materially affected business since Zicasso doesn’t receive many requests for bookings there, but that his company is carefully watching the situation in Ecuador, where gang violence erupted last week.
Tan noted that his company has seen a recent rise in trip requests for Morocco, which he noted is thousands of miles from Jerusalem.
Yet, according to Morning Consult, the Israel-Hamas war could reduce travel interest to the region “for months and even years to come.”

What *are* Holiday items?
First, what am I talking about when I say “holiday items”?
Holiday items include Christmas or ski sweaters, sequined skirts, sparkly dresses, and all things velvet. And don’t forget cutesy themed shirts, socks, PJs, and accessories.
In short, we’re talking clothes that we acquired with specific intent to wear for a holiday party, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve, etc.
These special holiday pieces are so cute, and generally, we consider them some of our best clothes. So why not wear them more often?
How to Keep Wearing Holiday Items: Tips, Tricks, & Hacks
Now, how do we bring these holiday clothes into the rest of the year?
Here are some of my favorite tips for styling holiday items for every day:
Casualness is your friend. Most holiday items are polished, fancy, or elegant… or at least we style them that way for the holidays. Pair them with more casual or basic items to dress them down for daily wear.
Mix in spring and summer hues for balance. Pinks, blues, purples, oranges, and neons aren’t generally associated with the holidays. So add them to your ‘fits to avoid looking “holiday.”
Layer, layer, layer. Layers will help you transform holiday clothes into interesting parts of a look. Layers can also help you cover up holiday-themed details.
Cute Outfits with Holiday Items:
Outfit 1 (Easy): Metallic Items
The first type of item we’ll style — and probably the easiest to wear year-round — is the metallic statement piece.
Metallics are easy to take out of the holidays with a few tweaks. They are also the easiest pieces to transition into warmer weather if you desire.
To create this look, I took a silver midi skirt and paired it with an oversized pink button-up shirt. Then, I layered on a bright pink sweater. Finally, for shoes, I went for pink high-tops.
This is an example of styling metallics with spring and summer hues. Thanks to the pinks, this doesn’t read as a Christmas or New Year’s outfit at all.
Also, it’s an example of dressing down a formal piece. The sneakers and loose-fitting tops give the skirt a casual vibe.
Outfit 2 (Easy): Colorful Tights
After the holidays, it is still winter. We still want to look cute and be warm, and tights are always an ally for that.
This year, colorful tights took the world (and holiday parties) by storm. Cherry red and burgundy tights, in particular, were everywhere this season.
These burgundy patterned tights are amazing for holiday parties, but let’s take them into the new year.
For the base of this look, I went classic with a white button-up shirt and a faux leather pleated mini skirt.
To layer, I wore a dusty blue, chunky knit sweater with a red mushroom pattern. Then, I threw on my burgundy tights and finished the look with burgundy loafers.
Tights, like metallic items, are one of the easiest holiday items to wear year-round.
My recommendation is to pair red or burgundy tights with blues and pinks. They work so well together and make for a really interesting color combo.
If you want to wear a patterned piece with those tights, as I did, look for an item that includes the color of your tights to tie the outfit together.
Outfit 3 (Medium): Velvet Items
Now, let’s move on to velvet items.
It’s no secret that velvet is the preferred fabric of the holiday season. It is soft, cozy, and has a subtle yet elegant shine.
From dresses to suits, pants, capes, and bows, you name it; you’ll find it in velvet come December.
For my velvety look, I wanted something subtle and put-together.
First, I wore a pair of black velvet pants. Then, to dress them down, I added a white cotton T-shirt. Then, I threw on a black moto jacket. Finally, keeping with the black and white theme, I wore Nike Cortez sneakers with white socks.
The key to wearing velvet year-round is to balance it with other textural fabrics, like leather. In this case, both fabrics have a bit of shine but completely different vibes.
Again, adding casual pieces like sneakers and a white tee helps dress down this formal holiday item.
Outfit 4 (Medium): Sequin Dresses or Skirts
What about all of our NYE sequins?
All that glitz and glamour cannot stay inside our closets for an entire year — life is too short!
Layering and contrast are the keys to styling them outside of the holiday season.
(For a more detailed guide on how to wear sequins, read our article here.)
To create my sequined look, I started with a silver sequined dress. Then, I layered with a dark teal shirt and closed the shirt. Since both items are loose-fitting, I folded the shirt to create the illusion of a waist.
To accessorize, I grabbed another pair of colored tights, this time in teal. Finally, I wore black platform boots and a black crossbody bag.
Dressing down sequins is easy when you choose the right fabrics.
In this case, the shirt is a flannel, and the tights, while colorful, are matte. The “sandwich” of blue items takes a bit of the attention away from the sequins, creating balance.
Outfit 5 (Difficult): Christmas or Ski Sweaters
Christmas and ski sweaters are tricky. They have a lot of elements that place them firmly in the seasonal items category. (Think snowflakes, reindeer, poinsettias, Santas.)
But there is a way of wearing them outside of the holiday season. Especially ski sweaters.
My favorite way to wear these sweaters after the holidays is to pair them with either non-seasonal patterns or neon colors.
For my sweater outfit, I wore a grey ski sweater with a bunch of bright spring colors and neon yellow. Then, I added a satin neon yellow shirt and wide-leg pants. For shoes, I chose crisp white booties.
As you can see, this is a fun and cool outfit, and I don’t look like I’m still hanging on to the holidays.
If you have one of these sweaters with a few colors on it, embrace it. Just like I did, choose one of the colors and run with it for the rest of your items, especially if that color is not green or red.
If you’re styling a more Christmas-y sweater, e.g., one with a massive Rudolph on it, I would either try to cover as much of the graphic as possible with layers or create a kitschy look with bold prints and colors.
Outfit 6 (Difficult): Christmas Dress
Then there are the Christmas dresses. You know, the ones with cute patterns, green cozy fabrics, red details, and probably more than one bow.
These dresses are both easy and hard to style because they tend to have a lot of details and feature heavier fabrics. But layering comes to our rescue again!
(For more details on how to layer like a pro, read our article on it here.)
To exemplify what I’m talking about, I chose a dress with everything I mentioned above. For Christmas this year, I wore this gorgeous green corduroy long dress with a teddy bear pattern.
To bring my dress into the new year, I wore it under an oversized white button-up shirt. Then, I took the beige from the teddy bear pattern and added a beige sweater. Finally, I chose some white sneakers to tone everything down.
Like I said, this dress is very holiday season-y. But I love it so much that I want to wear it as often as I can.
In general, if you have a dress like this or one you feel is like this, tone it down with your layers. Go for neutrals, solid-colored pieces, and simple fabrics.
The same goes for shoes: think casual, like sneakers, flats, or loafers.
Outfit 7 (Difficult): Christmas PJs
Finally, it’s time to style our trickiest item. And guess what: whether yours are knitted, satin, or flannel, you definitely own a pair.
I’m talking about Christmas PJs.
They’re cute, they’re comfy, they’re cozy, and you can wear them out of the house. The key is to style them as if they were any co-ord set in your closet.
For my final outfit, I’m wearing just the pants of my Christmas PJs.
The pants are loose-fitting. They also are off-white and dark red with a tiny houndstooth pattern.
To pull this off, I switched the PJ top for a blue denim shirt and tucked it in a little bit. Then, I layered on a dark grey sweater and tucked that in. For shoes, I chose a pair of off-white loafers and off-white socks to accessorize.
PJs are tricky, but once you learn how to style them, they can add so much variety to your closet! This is especially true if they are made of flannel or satin.
In contrast to the advice I gave elsewhere in this post, the best items to match with PJs are formal, like blazers, loafers, and oxford shirts. This creates the contrast needed to style such an informal item.
What do you think?
Now I’d love to hear from you.
What are your favorite holiday clothes? Would you wear any of the outfits? What’s your favorite way to style your seasonal items after the holidays?

Social media posts by Maldivian officials may cost the country millions in tourism revenue, as calls by Indian travelers to boycott the island nation intensify.
“We are seeing a 40% drop in bookings over the last two days,” Ankit Chaturvedi, vice president and global head of marketing at the India-based travel software company Rategain, said Tuesday.
“Most people book on weekends, and therefore the drop seems more significant because ideally [bookings] should have gone up,” he told CNBC Travel.
Travel bookings to the Maldives tumbled following a diplomatic row that erupted last week after a series of posts appeared on X, formerly known as Twitter, on India Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s account.
The posts showed him snorkeling, sitting by the water and meeting people in Lakshadweep, which some viewed as a veiled attempt to siphon visitors away from the island nation.
Some travel agents in India say they are canceling bookings to the Maldives, scrubbing their websites of its photos, and recommending travelers go to the Indian archipelago of Lakshadweep, the Andaman Islands, Nicobar Islands or Sri Lanka instead, according to The India Express.
The dispute has thrust a global spotlight on the little-known Lakshadweep, which like the Maldives, is a scenic chain of sandy atolls, coral reefs and crystalline water.
The Maldives, located some 340 miles to the south, is the preferred playground for India, however. In 2023, more than one in 10 arrivals were from India, making it the country’s largest source market, followed by Russia and China, according to Maldives tourism statistics.
But more British travelers — and nearly twice as many Italians — have visited the Maldives in the first week of January, compared to those from India, which fell to fourth place in terms of visitor arrivals.
If calls to #BoycottMaldives continue, millions could be stake.
Exact losses to the Maldives are hard to estimate, said Chaturvedi, but “India drove $380 million worth of tourism last year to Maldives, which is significant.”
Some blamed Modi’s posts for setting off the debacle even though they did not mention the Maldives, which has lost favor in India following the 2023 election of Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu.
Muizzu campaigned on an “India out” policy — in contrast to the Maldivian Democratic Party’s “India First” policy. He also broke with long-standing tradition by choosing China for his first official state visit this week, widely viewed as a snub to India.
India’s Ministry of Exterior Affairs did not immediately respond to CNBC’s requests for comment.
However, others say Maldives supporters, bristling at online comparisons to Lakshadweep, kicked off the row by writing negative comments about India’s ability to compete with its resorts and hospitality.
Maldivian Deputy Ministers Malsha Shareef, Mariyam Shiuna and Abdulla Mahzoom Majid lobbed various insults at Modi on X, calling him a “clown,” “terrorist” and “puppet of Israel,” according to Reuters.
Maldives’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer sought to distance the country from the comments, writing on X that the remarks “are unacceptable and do not reflect the official position of the Government of the #Maldives.”
The three officials were suspended for their social media posts over the weekend, according to the news agency.
But the furor has only intensified since, underscoring the travel industry’s exposure to local geopolitical affairs, as well as the on-going conflict in the Middle East.
As to whether Indian travelers are rescheduling their trips to Lakshadweep, it’s hard to say, said Chaturvedi.
“We cannot track this as there are not enough operations,” he said. According to TripAdvisor, there are just 13 hotels in the archipelago.
Given the mercurial nature of social media outrage, Chaturvedi said he expects the boycott will “pass quickly.”
But a national rallying cry to travel domestically will have much greater staying power, he said. Trending hashtags, like #ExploreIndianIslands, are being pushed online from everyday travelers to Bollywood celebrities, like Akshay Kumar.
Chaturvedi said calls to travel inside India “will last longer — it’s a big agenda of the government.”
An agenda which likely received a bigger push than those behind Modi’s serene photographs by the sea ever imagined.
For many of us, the holidays are filled to the brim with sugary treats, heavy meals and perhaps a drink or a dozen. Now that the holidays have come and gone, we may feel lousy or simply that some of our health habits have fallen by the wayside. Perhaps it is time then for a post-holiday habit refresh to steer ourselves back on track and keep ourselves accountable.
As you know, I’m not a fan of the diet mindset and the work I do centres on:
Still, I recognize that early in the year people are extra motivated to establish habits. Ultimately, a post-holiday habit refresh involves nutrition, lifestyle, movement and mindset. Since I’ve been in this field, I’ve learned that working on any of these elements on their own is going to beneficial, yet if we’re looking at total and optimal health we also need to look at how all of these things work together.
The effect of a healthy lifestyle altogether is much greater than the sum of its parts.
Here are a few guidelines to get you started, or at least think about starting, to bring about a healthy year ahead.
Post-Holiday habit Refresh: food and nutrition
Choose Low-Glycemic Foods
High glycemic foods are those that are immediately digested and hit our bloodstream quickly, leading to highs and lows in our blood sugar levels. This can lead to some dire consequences, which I wrote about in more detail here.
High glycemic foods include:
refined and processed grains (white rice, white bread, packaged cereals, crackers, etc.)
Nourishing fats, such as ghee, coconut oil, avocado, nuts and seeds
Eliminate or Avoid Sugar
I’ve been sugar free for well over four years now and this has made a massive difference in my life. I sleep better, I have more energy and I feel like my brain is running at a more effective level (which allows me to be more present with my family as well as all of you).
My 7 Day No Sugar Challenge is a great place to start. (In fact, this is how I started when I quit sugar. My intention was to ditch it for a week and then I just kept going and going.) Don’t think about what you’ll be eating in one month or six months – start with one week. You can eliminate sugar for one week!

Reduce or Eliminate Dairy Products
Dairy was one of the first foods I eliminated completely 15 years ago when I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. There are many reasons why dairy isn’t a health-promoting food, including our inability to digest it, the allergenic properties of milk proteins, the lack of support for bone health, and more. You can learn about this in-depth here:
Substitutes for Dairy Products
Homemade is going to be optimal for the best health benefits!
Avoid Alcohol
While there can be some health benefits to alcohol in certain situations, when we are working to build our health back up alcohol generally serves to break it down. For every alcoholic drink consumed, try increasing water intake by two glasses. Those pitchers of beer are suddenly looking rather huge, aren’t they?
Other non-alcoholic drinks to enjoy include:
Increase Raw and Lightly Steamed Vegetables
Potatoes don’t count here! We want the dark leafy greens: the kale, spinach, chard, romaine, and mixed salad greens. Also add in some of the brassica family of vegetables: broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and Brussels sprouts. These are all rich in phytonutrients; keys to increasing energy production in the cells and removing waste to enhance our detoxification processes.
Increase Quality Protein
The amino acids in protein are the building blocks of our body systems and are essential for hormone and enzyme production, immunity, muscle growth, and repair. We therefore need the best quality to build and repair any damage that may have been caused by our holiday merriment.
Vegetable-based proteins like lentils, legumes, beans, peas, nuts and seeds are excellent choices. They are rich in fibre as well; essential for removing excess waste.
There are very few things I’ve experienced in my life that I would call life-changing, but my Obé Fitness habit has been. These workouts are on-demand, short, full of variety and are utterly FUN. Most important for me, however, is the mental and emotional shift I am feeling. I feel stronger, and more resilient mentally.
I encourage you to find what works for you.
Nature and Sunshine
Here in Canada, where I am, the new calendar year means snow, more hours of darkness and cold temperatures. We usually like to escape to California every winter; but that hasn’t been in the cards for the last couple of years.
To help me beat the winter blues, I like to get outside (as much as weather permits), even if it’s just to a park in the city. This has had a massive impact on my health and wellbeing.

A Breathing Practice
Breathing is such a simple thing and yet we spend so much time with our shoulders scrunched up, our muscles tight and our breathing short and shallow.
Try to implement a simple breathing technique to help bring oxygen to your tissues, improve digestion, clear your mind and reduce stress. As a start, take five deep, slow breaths in bed when you wake up in the morning.
Just think of it this way: everything we eat, think and do can either serve to build up our health or build up disease. Once we start to see and feel the positive results from our efforts, we may just find that what started as a post-holiday habit refresh or clean-up, may soon become a way of living.

The new year brings clean slates, changing trends, fresh resolutions—and new houseplants. Remember that orchid a friend brought to your dinner party? Or the festive poinsettia you brought home? They’re still kicking around. After the holidays, when you’re putting away the decorations, you may be looking at those plants and asking yourself, “Now what?”
Resist the urge to toss them out after the holidays. With a bit of attention, they can last for years. Here’s how to care for a few of the more popular holiday plants.
In the Aztecs language, poinsettias were known as cuetlaxochitl (kwet-la-sho-she), meaning a flower that looks like embers. But for the record, the plant is not deadly—merely irritating unless you’re allergic to it.
Water, but not too much. Let the soil dry out a bit in between waterings. If your poinsettias came in a plastic pot with a decorative foil wrap, discard the wrap, it can trap water and cause root rot.
Provide plenty of bright indirect light. If you only have windows with direct sun, hang a sheer curtain to diffuse the light.
Keep them warm. They are tropical plants. Place them in rooms where the temperature stays above 50 degrees and away from drafty windows.
Move them outside once the temperatures in your area are above 50 degrees at night. Bring them back inside in September if you want them to re-bloom.
Give them darkness to encourage re-blooming. The shorter days prompt the plant to start the flowering process. Starting in late September, make sure the plant gets 14 hours of complete darkness a day for 8 to 10 weeks.
Christmas cacti can live 30 years. It’s also known as Thanksgiving cactus, Easter cactus, and orchid cactus.
Don’t overwater. Water only when the soil is dry. While it is a cactus, it’s one that’s native to the Brazilian rainforest. They need humidity. If misting them daily is too much trouble, place them on a humidity tray. (Fill the tray with pebbles and water; replenish water as needed.)
Provide bright indirect light, the same as their poinsettia friends.
Keep them warm. Like the other plants on this list, room temperature is perfect for them. Make sure to keep them away from cold drafts.
Fertilize monthly during their growing season only with a 20-20-20 liquid fertilizer.
To re-bloom, prune the tips off in June. Then in mid to late October, give the plant 14 hours of complete darkness for six to eight weeks.
Rosemary’s latin name is ‘ros’ meaning dew and ‘marinus’ meaning sea. It’s native to the Mediterranean area, specifically Spain and Portugal.
Water regularly and deeply. While drought-tolerant, it shouldn’t be allowed to dry out. It’s happiest growing in a well-draining potting medium.
Give it full sun. Unlike the others on this list, it loves the sun. Go for at least six hours or more if possible.
Fertilize lightly during the growing season. It doesn’t need much.
Prune it if you want to. You can certainly keep the tree shape, but you don’t have to. You should only prune during the growing season, but you’re fine if you need a few sprigs for a recipe during the winter.
Check for pests. Rosemary can get whitefly, among other pests. Neem oil, when used correctly, can get rid of them.
Hallmark Channel is jam-packed with new Christmas movies every season, but what about New Year’s films? Yes, the network has a few magical tales for that holiday as well!
The first New Year’s-themed movie premiered in 2008 and it wasn’t until nearly 10 years later that viewers got another film focused on the December 31 or January 1 event. 2017’s Royal New Year’s Eve centers around a prince and his unlikely princess falling in love on the special night.
“I love fairy tales, I found them beautiful [growing up]. I love the suspense and I love smiling and crying at all the right moments,” Royal New Year’s Eve star Jessy Schram said during a behind-the-scenes interview in December 2017. “It’s fun to get to play the twinkle in someone else’s eyes.”
There are a few elements that Hallmark Channel viewers can count on when they snuggle in to watch a holiday film — and the actors and actresses have come to expect the classic moments too. While celebrating 2022’s Countdown to Christmas launch at Radio City Music Hall in New York City last month, Us Weekly […]
The following year, Adelaide Kane made her Hallmark debut in A Midnight Kiss, which focuses on the planning of an epic New Year’s Eve party.
