  • Google Tech expert offers tips for the holiday season in DC region – WTOP News

    Millions of Americans will hit the road for Thanksgiving but the worst time to drive to your destination is between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 26.

    Millions of Americans will hit the road for Thanksgiving but the worst time to drive to your destination is between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 26.

    Google tech expert Bailey Thompson said her team analyzed the engine’s “Search” and “Maps” data to uncover the best strategies for avoiding holiday traffic in the D.C. area.

    “A lot of folks are leaving the city, but also a lot of people are having friends and family come visit,” Thompson said. “So understanding when the traffic is peak is really helpful.”

    When to hit the road for Thanksgiving festivities

    For Thanksgiving travel, Thompson advised leaving before 10 a.m. on Wednesday or waiting until after 8 p.m.

    On Thanksgiving Day, expect heavy congestion between noon and 3 p.m. as last‑minute grocery runs spike.

    If you plan on shopping on Black Friday, traffic picks up around noon. For your return trips on Saturday or Sunday, the busiest traffic window will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

    Thompson recommended using Google Maps for real‑time traffic updates and navigation tools powered by artificial intelligence to stay ahead of delays.

    For updates on the roadways around the D.C. area, you can also listen to WTOP Traffic on the 8s.

    Tips for Black Friday and holiday shopping

    Post offices are very busy this time of year, with Saturdays often bringing the longest lines. Thompson said another busy window to avoid is around 2 p.m. on Mondays, when many people stop by during their lunch breaks.

    Thompson recommended planning visits for Tuesday afternoons, which tend to be less crowded.

    Google also analyzed local shopping trends and found last‑minute shoppers in the D.C. region prefer convenient, all‑in‑one destinations where they can pick up multiple gifts at once. Popular choices include shopping centers, sporting goods stores and festive Christmas markets.

    “If they’re looking for a last minute gift, they’re not going to boutiques,” she said. “They’re going somewhere where they can try to knock out a bunch of things.”

    The busiest shopping days fall on the Saturdays leading up to Christmas, with the final Saturday before the holiday drawing the heaviest crowds as people scramble for presents.

    “We all have very good intentions to get our shopping done,” Thompson said. “Then life happens, and all of a sudden, we’re all behind the ball.”

    Once the gifts are opened and you need to handle returns or exchanges, steer clear of the Monday after New Year’s Day.

    With many people off work that week, post‑holiday crowds are especially heavy.

    “If you need to go Monday, just manage expectations,” Thompson said. “Know that it’s going to be quite busy that day for returns.”

Given the price for this model hasn’t changed, you’re straight up getting more tech for the same price. If your gift recipient’s current iPhone is a few generations behind, this is a good time to consider an upgrade.

    What about AI? The iPhone 17 doesn’t make as many leaps into the technology as its predecessor, but the new iOS and processer prepares the phone for any advancements that may come in 2026. The iPhone 17 retails at $800.

    If you or someone in your life has ever been curious about a foldable phone, consider Samsung’s newest Galaxy Z Fold 7 model. This phone solves many of the issues users have been concerned about since fold phones hit the market: It’s much thinner and lighter than its predecessors — 0.17 inches thick when unfolded and less than half an inch folded — and it weighs slightly less than half a pound, impressive considering they boosted the size of all the screens.

  • Starbucks apologizes for $29.95 ‘Bearista’ chaos after many fans miss out and merch resells for up to $50,000 online | Fortune

    Consumers may be rattled by inflation and fears about the economy, but that hasn’t stopped them from flocking to Starbucks for the coffee chain’s latest limited offering: a 20-ounce cup shaped like a teddy bear.

    Starbucks unveiled on Wednesday its “Bearista Cold Cup,” selling for $29.95. The item sold out within hours, with some customers complaining of people in line shoving one another to stake a claim over the product. Others claimed they waited in store lines for an hour, only to see employees take two cups off the shelf and buy them themselves.

    Some able to buy the Bearista cup have taken to reselling it online, with many cups going for more than $300—even up to an eye-popping $50,000.

    Starbucks offered an apology for the limited run of the cup, saying it did not expect it to become so popular.

    “The excitement for our merchandise exceeded even our biggest expectations and despite shipping more Bearista cups to coffeehouses than almost any other merchandise item this holiday season, the Bearista cup and some other items sold out fast,” a Starbucks spokesperson said in a statement to Fortune. “We understand many customers were excited about the Bearista cup and apologize for the disappointment this may have caused.”

    Last month, the coffee chain reported its first same-store sales growth in two years, turning the corner on a yearlong turnaround plan implemented by CEO Brian Niccol to turn Starbucks back into a cozy “third space.” Company changes included adding more comfortable store seating, and slashing menu items, as well as leveraging AI, taking the pressure off baristas so they can fulfill orders more efficiently.

    Defying a cautious consumer

    Retailers have long promoted holiday decorations and goods months ahead of schedule, as spending on special seasonal products tends to remain robust, even as other discretionary purchases take a hit. Look no further than Starbucks’ perennially popular Pumpkin Spice Latte, which it rolls out in August—a month before the autumn equinox.

    Ravi Sawhney, founder and CEO of product design firm RKS Design, told Fortune that Starbucks’ success with the Bearista cup goes beyond just seasonal flair. It pulls at the feeling of status that consumers desire, even in challenging economic times.

    “In tough times, people look for any level of being unique, special,” Sawhney said. “They need those little tokens, and if it’s rare, that makes it that much more special.”

    The designer, interested in the psychology behind why people purchase what they do, said consumers want to feel like they are on a hero’s journey when they go after an affordable trinket: They identify something they want, go through trials and tribulations to attain it, and then are positively viewed by other individuals who covet the item they just obtained.

    “What is the low-cost way to be a hero to yourself and to others?” Sawhney said.

    In less poetic terms, the Bearista cup is simply an extension of the little treats culture favored by Gen Z to justify small purchases after a challenging day. According to Sawhney, Starbucks is the embodiment of this little treats psychology—People may not be able to afford much, but they still splurge on a cup of coffee. It’s no surprise, then, why the Bearista cup was such a hit. 

    “It’s the essence of Starbucks,” he said.

  • Department stores have a new playbook for this holiday season: How Macy’s, Dillard’s, and Nordstrom are getting their groove back this holiday season | Fortune

    A Los Angeles Times headline in 1995 asked, “Can the department store survive?” A quarter century later, CNN proclaimed that “America has turned its back on big department stores.”

    These are just two of many obituaries predicting the imminent demise of the U.S. department store—and all that pessimism has been backed by the data. Department stores have been losing market share for decades, first to big-box discounters like Walmart and Target in the 1980’s and 90’s, and more recently to Amazon. The department store’s percentage of total U.S. retail sales has fallen from about 14% in 1993 to only 2.6% last year.

    But now, perhaps improbably, there are new signs of life in the retail format, with growth this year at Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Dillard’s, Nordstrom, and Belk—and signs of stabilization at J.C. Penney and Kohl’s.

    The path that department stores are taking back into shoppers’ favor is a return to what made them popular in the first place: well-maintained and attractive spaces with attentive staff, a well-chosen selection of products, and enticing new brands. Many chains are finding that fewer stores are better, and have been shutting down locations to maintain quality and brand congruence.

    With most products available online, often at lower prices, department stores must offer some real value to the brick-and-mortar shopper. But it’s an uphill climb to reverse some of the erosion of standards that have diminished the appeal of department-store shopping. Competition with the Walmarts, Targets, and T.J. Maxxes of this world led many department store companies to cut corners and skimp on retail flourishes, eroding their raison d’être in the shopper’s mind.

    “You know what was tough about department stores?” Macy’s Inc. CEO Tony Spring recently told Fortune. “We didn’t execute well. A bad store, no matter what you call it, is going to fail.”

    A string of bad seasons

    And indeed many did fail. In 2020 alone, Neiman Marcus, J.C. Penney, Lord & Taylor, and Bon-Ton Stores filed for bankruptcy protection. They were already struggling before they were pushed over the edge by a pandemic that kept shoppers away for months. A couple of years before that, Barneys New York and Sears did the same, eventually going out of business altogether.

    As Spring told Fortune, Macy’s recent success—including its best quarter for sales growth in three years—is thanks to a playbook focused on less store clutter, a more focused assortment of products and brands, and more staffing in key departments such as women’s shoes and dresses.

    Rival Dillard’s, a primarily Southern and Southwestern chain with 290 stores, has also seen modest growth by following those basic retail precepts. Unlike many of its mall-based peers, Dillard’s has rarely deviated from its formula of neat stores and thoughtful product discovery, and is roughly the same size today as it was 15 years ago by revenue and store count—unlike chains that expanded rapidly, then closed scores of stores.

    Another department store that appears to be staging a comeback is Nordstrom, which went private this summer to revitalize its business outside of Wall Street’s glare. It has seen sales rise 4.1% in the first half of 2025. Belk, a privately held Southern chain, is seeing growth too, though more modest, according to industry estimates.

    Still, it’s too early to pop the champagne. Dillard’s and Macy’s modest comparable sales growth of about 1% last quarter is hardly the mark of a roaring retail renaissance. And Penney and Kohl’s are still seeing sales declines, albeit less severe than just a few quarters ago.

    Meanwhile, some companies are still deep in the doldrums: Saks Global recently said its sales fell 13% last quarter. In that case, the decline is largely because vendors are not sending it enough merchandise given recent delays in getting payment from the debt-laden company. Clearly, department stores are not out of the woods.

    Catering to the bargain-seekers

    The holiday season, during which department stores get nearly a third of their annual sales, will be a major test of their nascent comeback. The Mastercard Economics Institute has forecast that sales will rise 3.6% November and December, a slower clip compared to last year’s holiday season. And shoppers are likely to be particularly bargain-hungry, meaning they will be holding out for deals, a trend department store executives are already seeing.

    “Many Americans are more stressed than ever about holiday spending, and wallets are stretched,” JCPenney chief customer and marketing officer Marisa Thalberg said in a recent presentation of the retailer’s holiday season strategy. The company’s response? To offer more deals, and earlier in the season.

    Kohl’s Chief Marketing Officer Christie Raymond expects shoppers will visit stores more often during the Thanksgiving to Christmas period, but buy less during each visit and gravitate to cheaper products as they feel the economic pinch.

    “We are seeing trading down,” Raymond said at a media briefing in October at Kohl’s design office in Manhattan. “Whereas some customers were maybe purchasing a premium brand, we are seeing them trade down to private brands.” This could bode well for the success of Kohl’s recent efforts to refresh its long languishing store brands.

    Even the high-end store Nordstrom, with its well-heeled clientele, is emphasizing more low-priced items than usual this year. At its New York flagship, Nordstrom has built a two-story area to showcase giftable items, with about 800 products that cost less than $100.

    Back to the future

    A century ago, department stores began a golden age in which they were at the forefront of America’s burgeoning consumer economy. They were grand behemoths, typically in city centers, where shopping was an event—rather than the constant pastime it is today, often done by scrolling on a device.

    These were memorable experiences: a trip to JCPenney to buy a Sunday best suit; the thrill of choosing the perfect debutante ball gown at Neiman Marcus; or the much-anticipated purchase of a new household appliance at Sears.

    In the 1960s, going shopping was still an event.

    In the 1950’s, Macy’s, Sears and Penney began expanding with large, multi-level stores thanks to the mushrooming of suburban malls across the country.

    But a couple of decades later, the rise of big-box retailers that boasted lower prices, like Walmart and Target, challenged that supremacy. And by the 1990’s, department stores were in secular decline. The rise of Amazon and e-commerce more broadly didn’t help.

    Amid all this change, department stores started to seem rather old-fashioned, a sea of sameness offering tired brands in badly lit, boilerplate stores where everything seemed to eventually end up in the discount bin. Under pressure, department stores tried to cut margins by reducing staffing, which made them feel messy and untended.

    And several leaned into consolidation—which in some ways compounded the problem. When Macy’s purchased May Department Stores in 2006 and acquired regional chains such as Marshall Field’s, it found itself with too many stores, too near each other.

    Shifts in consumers’ tastes also dealt a blow: Customers were no longer wowed by being sprayed with perfume upon entry to the beauty section, preferring the less didactic way of selling beauty products that have made the more youth-friendly brand Ulta Beauty a phenomenon in the last decade.

    Efforts to compete with Amazon during its ascent in the 2010s had department stores playing catchup on supply chain prowess and integrating stores with e-commerce—sometimes to the detriment of in-store experience. “They forgot what they existed for,” said Joel Bines, a former retail consultant with AlixPartners and a current director of North Carolina-based Belk. ”It became all about efficiency and conglomeration and homogenization.”

    In search of fashion authority

    Now the pendulum is swinging back toward a focus on how department stores look and feel for customers, the merchandise they sell, and on standing out from the others. A big part of that is undoing the expansions of previous decades: Macy’s is prioritizing 125 of its stores, or a third of its fleet, while closing dozens more stores in the next two years. And JCPenney shed hundreds of stores in its 2020 bankruptcy and is now down to 650 locations, from 1,100 a decade ago.

    But as the adage goes in the retail industry, you can’t shrink your way back to greatness. Department stores still have to make a compelling case for consumers to come back.

    And there’s ground to regain with the brands department stores sell as well. Luxury brands have sought to distance themselves from the increasingly shabby in-store experience and ubiquitous mark-downs at department stores. For years, fashion companies like Ralph Lauren pulled their products from Macy’s stores to sell more of their products direct to consumers online and at their own stores.

    But now, Macy’s CEO Spring, who is credited with revitalizing Bloomingdale’s in the decade he led that chain, is betting that the retailer’s massive reach, with 40 million customers, combined with its improved stores, can restore the brand’s “fashion authority” and lure top brands back.

    Department stores are also looking to partner with new brands. JCPenney, for instance, will be selling exclusive items by designer Rebecca Minkoff for the 2025 holiday season.

    Winning back older customers

    To recreate a premium shopping experience, department stores have to find the right balance between stocking enough variety to serve a range of customers and not cluttering stores with too many products. To that end, Nordstrom and Macy’s are among the chains trimming down their assortments.

    That does leave retailers less margin for error and requires a better mastery of data analytics to improve demand forecasting—making sure that what is on offer matches what shoppers want. That will be a challenge for some chains. “They are dealing with this beast of too much data and not enough actionable insights,” says Shelley Kohan, a professor at Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and a former Macy’s executive, noting that this is an area where AI can help.

    Still, even if all these chains do renew themselves, no one should expect them to suddenly re-emerge as a big threat to the likes of Walmart or T.J. Maxx. Trying to win new, younger shoppers is expensive and may end up being futile. Some analysts say that’s why department stores should focus on older shoppers, who have much more disposable income. “While some are chasing the finicky Gen Z and millennials, they should really be focused on recapturing Gen X,” says FIT’s Kohan.

    Winning back those existing consumers who remember the glamor and delight of an old-fashioned department store shopping spree is the key, says Bines. “Your priors become buyers again, and the buyers become loyal,” he says. “It’s a self-perpetuating cycle. And then maybe you can win some new shoppers.”

  • National Retail Federation predicts first $1 trillion holiday shopping season

    NEW YORK — American shoppers are expected to spend more during this holiday shopping season than last year despite economic uncertainty and rising prices.

    The 2025 forecast from the National Retail Federation on Thursday estimates that shoppers will collectively spend between $1.01 trillion and $1.02 trillion in November and December, an increase of 3.7% to 4.2% compared with last year.

    Retailers rung up $976 billion in holiday sales last year, the group said.

    “We’re seeing really positive behavior and engagement from consumers, ” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay told reporters on a call Thursday. “In fairness, that’s been somewhat of a surprise.”

    But Shay said more Americans are growing selective and they’re focused on discounts. And while spending is expected to be up again, the growth of that spending may be in decline.

    That is still greater than the average increase of 3.6% between 2010 to 2019. Americans ramped up spending after that during the coronavirus pandemic. Holiday season sales rose 8.9% in 2020 and soared 12.5% in 2021, according to the NRF.

    The group’s holiday forecast is based on economic modeling using various key economic indicators including consumer spending, disposable personal income, employment, wages, inflation and previous monthly retail sales releases. NRF’s calculation excludes automobile dealers, gasoline stations and restaurants to focus on core retail.

    Holiday spending accounts for 19% of annual sales for the retail industry, though for some retailers the number is a lot higher, according to the NRF. And consumer spending in the U.S. is monitored closely because it drives about 70% of the nation’s gross domestic product.

    The forecast this year, however, arrives during the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. There has been no government data released on the jobs market or retail sales since the shutdown began 37 days ago.

    “Forecasting is increasingly challenging in this environment,” Shay acknowledged.

    The NRF forecast is in line with other estimates, however, which point to slowing growth.

    Mastercard SpendingPulse, which tracks spending across all payment methods including cash, predicts that holiday sales will be up 3.6% from Nov. 1 through Dec. 24. That compares with a 4.1% increase last year.

    Deloitte Services LP forecasts holiday retail sales to be up between 2.9% to 3.4% from Nov. 1 through Jan. 31, compared with last year’s 4.2%.

    Adobe expects U.S. online sales to hit $253.4 billion this holiday season, representing 5.3% growth. That’s smaller than last year’s 8.7% growth.

    Consumer spending in the U.S. has remained resilient even as consumer confidence has eroded.

    Mark Matthews, NRF’s chief economist and executive director of research, said consumer behavior is changing with a sharper focus on finding deals. And the frequency of family nights out at a restaurant is on the decline, NRF executives said.

    The timing of the government shutdown is “absolutely problematic,” Matthews said, noting that it’s led to a loss in private sector income, which erodes consumer demand.

    Spending should recover once the shutdown ends, Matthews said, yet there are broader issues of concern that will not be solved when the government shutdown ends.

    The gap between wealthy and lower-income households is widening, according to analysts.

    Based on spending from its credit card and bank customers, Bank of America found that spending growth among lower income households rose 0.6% in September compared with the same period last year. Among higher income brackets, spending rose at more than four times that speed, or 2.6%, in September. And wages are growing faster for higher income households.

    That is making it more difficult for lower income households to keep up when tariffs and other economic factors are pushing prices higher.

    In a separate report this week, Bank of America estimated that U.S. consumers are bearing 50% to 70% of the U.S. tariff costs, and it expects that load to grow.

    “We think there is overwhelming evidence that tariffs have pushed inflation higher for consumers,’’ Bank of America economists Stephen Juneau and Aditya Bhave wrote.

    At the same time, U.S. companies have announced tens of thousands of job cuts. Some companies have cited rising operational costs from new tariffs under the Trump administration, as well as shifting consumer spending, corporate restructuring, or increased spending on artificial intelligence.

    That has led retailers to pull back on the hiring of seasonal workers.

    American Christmas LLC, which creates elaborate holiday installations for commercial properties such as New York’s Rockefeller Center and Radio City Music Hall, plans to hire 220 temporary workers and is ramping up recruitment nearly two months later than usual, CEO Dan Casterella said. Last year, it took on 300 people during its busy period.

    The main reason? The company wants to offset its tariff bill, which Casterella expects to be as big as $1.5 million this year, more than double last year’s $600,000.

    “The issue is if you overstaff and then you underperform, it’s too late,” Casterella said. ”I think everyone’s more mindful now than ever. ”

    could fall to 2009 levels

    Online behemoth Inc. said Monday it intends to hire 250,000 full-, part-time and seasonal workers for the crucial shopping period, the same level as a year ago.

    But job placement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas forecasts overall holiday hiring for the last three months of the year will likely fall under 500,000 positions. That’s fewer than last year’s 543,000 level and also marks the smallest seasonal gain in 16 years when retailers hired 495,800 temporary workers, the firm said.

    Among other companies cutting holiday payrolls: Radial, an e-commerce company that powers deliveries for roughly 120 companies like Lands’ End and Cole Haan and operates 20 fulfillment sites. It plans to hire 6,500 workers, fewer than last year’s 7,000, and is waiting to the last minute to ramp up hiring for some of its clients, chief human resources officer Sabrina Wnorowski, said.

    Bath & Body Works, based in Reynoldsburg, Ohio, said it plans to hire 32,000 workers, below the 32,700 a year ago.

    “We saw real strong signals that there’s been a cooling in the , even beyond what our expectations were in the first nine months of the year,” Challenger’s senior vice president Andy Challenger said.

    Challenger also noted companies are using artificial intelligence bots to replace some workers, particularly those working in call centers. And he’s also seeing companies hiring workers closer to when they need them.

    Meanwhile, the list of companies staying mum about their specific holiday hiring goals keeps growing. Target Corp., UPS and Macy’s are declining to offer figures, a departure from years past.

    Holiday hiring: the first clues to what’s in store for spending

    Retailers’ hiring plans mark the first clues to what’s in store for the U.S. season and come as the U.S. job market has lost momentum this year, partly because Trump’s trade wars have created uncertainty that’s paralyzing managers trying to make hiring decisions.

    The Labor Department reported in early September that U.S. employers — companies, government agencies and nonprofits — added just 22,000 jobs in August, down from 79,000 in July and well below the 80,000 that economists had expected.

    The government shutdown, which started Oct. 1 and has delayed the release of economic reports, could worsen the job picture.

    In an attempt to exert more pressure on Democratic lawmakers as the government shutdown continues, the White House budget office said Friday mass firings of federal workers have started.

    Analysts will be closely monitoring the shutdown’s impact on spending. For now, many retailers say that consumers, while resilient, are selective. Analysts will also be watching how shoppers will react to price increases as a result of high tariff costs in the next few months, experts said.

    Given an economic slowdown, holiday spending growth is expected to be smaller than a year ago, according to several forecasts.

    Mastercard SpendingPulse, which tracks spending across all payment methods including cash, predicts that holiday sales will be up 3.6% from Nov. 1 through Dec. 24. That compares with a 4.1% increase last year.

    Deloitte Services LP forecasts holiday sales to be up between 2.9% to 3.4% from Nov. 1 through Jan. 31. That’s compares with 4.2% last year.

    And Adobe expects U.S. online sales to hit $253.4 billion from Nov. 1 to Dec. 31, representing a 5.3% growth. That’s smaller than last year’s 8.7% growth.

    A more flexible approach

    Companies are increasingly wanting to hire workers closer to when they need them, experts said.

    “In today’s environment, brands are really looking for us to be agile,” Radial’s Wnorowski said.

    So for some of its clients, Radial will now be hiring two weeks before Thanksgiving weekend, the traditional start for the season, instead of four weeks before the kickoff. Radial is also training holiday hires faster with new technology that’s simplifying their tasks. It used to take a couple of days to train a worker, but now it only takes a couple of hours, she said.

    Meanwhile, Target will offer current workers additional hours and then will tap into a separate pool of workers— 43,000— who pick up shifts. The Minneapolis-based company also hires seasonal workers across its nearly 2,000 stores and more than 60 distribution facilities to meet demand, it said.

    For the past few years, Walmart, the largest private employer, has been offering its workers extra hours available during the holidays, a Walmart spokesperson said, noting it’s worked well and the feedback from customers and workers has been “overwhelmingly positive.”

    The Bentonville, Arkansas-based retailer said there may be some seasonal hiring on a store-by-store basis, but most locations will dole out those hours to current workers.

    Economic data blackout could create challenges

    Waiting until the last minute to hire could mean a mad scramble to find talent, but companies say that with the slowing economy, they don’t anticipate having a hard time.

    Meanwhile, the temporary halt of the release of economic reports leaves retailers in the dark about sales forecasts and the workers they may need.

    “Certainly, for our customers not having access to data will put more of a challenge on their ability to forecast,” Wnorowski of Radial said. “But we’ll stay very close to them as we go into peak and we’ll adjust as soon we see things changing.”

    As we approach the holiday season, small businesses are gearing up for what is often their busiest and most lucrative time of year.

    Yet many local small businesses are still recovering from the economic damage of COVID-19 regulations, multi-year inflation and a customer base that has less money for spending, notes Eric Alexander, founder of , an organization advocating for downtown areas and small businesses.

    “The good news is that over the last 20 years our downtowns have activated ‘Shop Local’ campaigns that drive foot traffic to our Main Street businesses,” Alexander said. “This year for Small Business Saturday, over 40 communities will pull together events, promotional campaigns and other public messages to remind Long Islanders to patronize local shops.”

    The “Shop Local” movement continues to grow, demonstrating patrons’ loyalty to their community based businesses.

    “These promotions, combined with downtown revitalization investment and housing development, have kept many of them in business through chaotic economic times,” Alexander said.

    A prime example of downtown revitalization is Station Yards, a mixed-use, transit-oriented development that’s just steps away from the Ronkonkoma train station.

    In the few years since Tritec Real Estate Company developed Station Yards, the bustling complex has attracted thousands of people, both residents and nonresidents alike.

    Tracking data to the area reveals that in the first week of August 2024, 2,000 visitors came to 3 Hawkins Avenue, a residential building that also houses Toast Coffee + Kitchen, Vespa Italian Kitchen, Cornucopia Natural Foods and Artemis Speakeasy. In the last week of July 2025, that address brought in 15,000 people, many from the greater Ronkonkoma area and from neighboring Holbrook and Lake Grove, notes Chris Kelly, senior vice president of Tritec.

    “It’s really transformed the area,” said Kelly of the 53-acre Station Yards development which, when completed, will include 1,450 residential units, 360,000 square feet of commercial/office space, 190,000 square feet of and 60,000 square feet of community space.

    In addition to the aforementioned businesses, current tenants also include Great South Bay Brewery, FourLeaf Federal Credit Union, Redefine Meals, Tap Room, The Pink Fin, Catholic Urgent Care, Playa Bowls, and Lucharitos. Slated to open soon are Ben & Jerry’s, DIY crafting shop Hammer & Stain, and Hotworx, which is a 24-hour gym.

    On Nov. 14, Station Yards will once again partner with the , the Ronkonkoma Chamber of Commerce and Sachem High School for their second annual turkey drive. Last year, they donated 117 turkeys and about 2,000 pounds of non-perishables items to Long Island Cares.

    “We hope to significantly beat that this year,” Kelly said.

    On Dec. 6, Tritec will host its annual tree lighting and the first of its weekly holiday markets on the green at Station Yards, which will include vendors and a mix of live entertainment.

    “We do the holiday market every Saturday from 12 Noon to 4 p.m. until Christmas,” said Kelly, noting that they averaged about 2,000 visitors at each of the holiday markets last year.  “This year I think the market will be a little better because we’re going to enclose the tents.”

    Small businesses looking to capitalize on the peak should check that they have enough inventory to support the surge and also create sales events to ensure they get a return on the investment of that inventory, notes Ree Wackett, advanced certified senior business advisor for the New York State Small Business Development Center at Stony Brook University, which helps provide assistance to small businesses and entrepreneurs.

    REE WACKETT: ‘Oftentimes small businesses can’t beat the big-box stores on price, but they can beat them on customer service, and that’s how Main Street can beat Wall Street with their customer service and individualized attention.’

    Many brick-and-mortar businesses will run special events, and online businesses will run specials during the official start of the holiday shopping season: The weekend following Thanksgiving—which includes Black Friday—Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday.

    “But they want to make sure that they let their marketplace know they’re open during the holidays, and they’re going to be running specials, so that traffic gets driven to either their site or their shop,” Wackett said.

    If businesses use , they should verify that their accounts are completely up to date with hours, sales and special events for the holidays, advises Wackett.

    “Just basically making sure that their customers, their clients, their market is aware that they’re very much open and in business and they want the business,” Wackett said.

    They should also make every effort to be responsive to their clients, whether that’s by phone or email.

    “Customer service for small business is huge,” Wackett said.” Oftentimes small businesses can’t beat the big-box stores on price, but they can beat them on customer service, and that’s how Main Street can beat Wall Street with their customer service and individualized attention.”

    She added that businesses should get contact information for their new customers, so that they send them email blasts and newsletters and turn them into repeat customers.

  • American households cut holiday budgets, still prioritize gifts | Long Island Business News

    Holiday budgets are expected to shrink by more than 10 percent this year, as elevated costs weigh on consumers. Still gift-giving remains a priority, with gift cards, and toys and games popular selections.

    That’s according to JLL’s U.S. Survey. Released in September, the report features the sentiments of 1,001 consumers, who were surveyed online. The survey reveals a sense of caution over spending on costly technology items, and a preference for gift cards, allowing recipients the flexibility to select their own presents.

    According to the survey, shoppers are trimming spending habits from $1,261 to $1,133 on food, decor and entertainment, but gift budgets remain unchanged. Still, higher-income shoppers from households that bring in more than $150,000 annually, expect to increase spending to $1,963, up from $1,599 last year.

    The survey also found that shoppers who linger more than 90 minutes spend $1,416, while those who visit stores quickly, in under 30 minutes, spend $792, showing that “dwell” time drives revenue. To encourage longer visits, JLL suggests offering such amenities as seating, charging stations, Wi-Fi, holiday music and warm drinks. JLL also recommends tracking time spent in stores through app check-ins or parking validation, and offering incentives such as loyalty points, extended parking or bundled discounts with nearby food partners and entertainment venues.

    And while 16.3 percent plan to shop exclusively online, 83 percent expect to visit physical retailers. Mass merchandisers are slated to attract more than 62 percent of consumers, signaling that many prefer “value-focused, one-stop shopping destinations.”

    With concerns about inflation, 60.6 percent said they are actively seeking more deals this year, with 71 percent prioritizing low prices.  More than 46 percent, up from over 44 percent last year, plan to scope deals during Black Friday and . And more than 37 percent plan to purchase less expensive gifts, while nearly 25 percent said they plan to  shop for fewer people. Still, shoppers report that they would also seek out deals throughout the season. To create awareness about deals, Jll suggests making promotions highly visible with digital signage, mobile alerts and cross-store savings . Also recommended is placing deals front and center online and in store, and offering flash sales to create urgency.

    Meantime, 25 percent plan to skip personal purchases, up from 17.3 percent last year.

    Social media continues to play a pivotal role in holiday shopping, with 79% of consumers using it for inspiration, down slightly from 81% in 2024. Gen Z consumers show a strong preference for TikTok, with 46.2% using the platform for its engaging, video-driven content. Millennials are turning to Facebook, Instagram and X for their holiday planning, reflecting a preference for varied content. Meanwhile, of those 60 and older, 57.9% avoid social media entirely for holiday inspiration, but those who do engage prefer Facebook and Instagram, highlighting these platforms’ ability to connect across generations. JLL suggests that retailers can create content-friendly spaces with photo backdrops, festive lighting and influencer events. Contests for posts or check-ins can drive engagement and visibility.

    Shoppers at open-air centers value festive décor and music that create a holiday atmosphere. Mall shoppers seek perks like gift-wrapping and visits with Santa, while online shoppers prioritize efficiency and avoiding mall crowds.

    Meanwhile, , Walmart and Target are a favorite among consumers, while Costco and Macy’s are also popular, but less so. Shoppers are also drawn to Etsy and Temu.

    Those earning more than $150,000 are drawn to entertainment and holiday-related experiences, including performances, dining and travel.

    Food and beverage also play a role among shoppers, with 84.6 percent saying they plan to indulge at least occasionally, with 51 percent seeking beverages. Younger shoppers prefer fast-casual spots. Older generations who combine food and shopping are more likely to want a full meal, rather than just a snack or drink, suggesting that they seek memorable experiences. JLL recommends adding seasonal drink specials, appealing hot chocolate stations and grab-and-go snacks near checkouts. And sampling stations for holiday treats can turn food into a destination, not just a convenience.

    The survey also found that nearly half of shoppers visit just three to five stores. JLL suggests that concierge-style gift stations can streamline the experience by offering recommendations, store maps and quick help, keeping visits focused and efficient for shoppers.

    A new study from The Harris Poll reveals that Americans are gearing up to spend more on holiday gifts this year than ever before.

    Gen Z’s Holiday Spending Surge – Despite Financial Anxiety

    Gen Z is leading holiday spending with projected purchases of $1,638 – more than double the Boomer average of $681. However, this spending comes with a psychological cost, as a significant portion of Gen Z reports holiday-related debt anxiety (60%).

    “What we’re witnessing is Gen Z’s determination to create meaningful holiday experiences, despite financial pressures,” says Libby Rodney, Chief Strategy Officer and Futurist at The Harris Poll, “Their willingness to spend more than other generations reflects both their emotional investment in gift-giving and the financial strain it can create.”

    Long Live Malls! Malls Capture the Holiday Spirit

    Physical retail spaces are experiencing a remarkable resurgence among younger generations, with 68% of Gen Z and Millennials considering holiday mall shopping a cherished tradition. This holiday season, 40% are specifically choosing malls as their gift-hunting destination, with 65% reporting that mall shopping actually reduces their holiday-related stress and saves time. The human element plays a crucial role, as 73% of young shoppers say store staff interactions enhance their shopping experience. The mall’s appeal runs particularly deep for Millennials, with 84% embracing the festive atmosphere and nostalgic charm of these retail spaces.

    “What’s particularly striking about our findings is that 65% of young shoppers find mall shopping reduces their holiday stress,” observes Rodney. “This suggests that despite their digital nativity, Gen Z and Millennials crave the structured, experiential nature of physical retail spaces.”

    Holiday Faux Pas on Blast

    The top holiday faux pas ranked. Gen X and Boomers are more likely to frown upon these practices compared to Gen Z and Millennials, who tend to be more forgiving about holiday behaviors seen as non-traditional.

    AI as a Holiday Helper: Gen Z and Millennials Turn to Tech for Stress-Free Shopping

    Younger generations are embracing AI to navigate holiday tasks, from planning meals to creating personalized budgets. Nearly 69% of Gen Z and Millennials trust AI to help them find better deals, and 57% would even use it to craft holiday cards. However, 81% of Americans feel holiday cards should be personally signed. Despite this, AI remains a practical tool for 56% of Americans who wish it could find deals on gifts this season.

    “The adoption of AI in holiday shopping represents a significant shift in consumer behavior,” explains Rodney. “With 69% of young consumers embracing AI for deal-finding, we’re seeing technology being integrated into holiday traditions in ways that enhance rather than replace the human experience.”

    This survey was conducted online within the U.S. by The Harris Poll from November 1 to November 2, 2024, among a nationally representative sample of 2,095 U.S. adults.     Forget the Macy’s parade, the real start of the holiday shopping season is in Oprah’s hands these days—and she has declared it open.

    Oprah Winfrey, the queen of all media, has released the 2024 version of her Favorite Things list, with 116 items that are now being fast-tracked on many people’s wish lists. This year’s list is a bit longer than 2023, which measured in at 112 items and the majority of items come from either small businesses or those owned by women or minorities.

    “One of my favorite things about this time of year is how open people are to spreading goodwill, and every present you offer is a chance to show someone how much you appreciate them – an opportunity to say, ‘You matter to me, and I am so grateful to have you in my life,’” Winfrey said in a statement.

    A dozen brands are making the list for the first time in 2024. As has become standard, Winfrey is working with Amazon to create a storefront to purchase the items.

    Prices for this year’s list range from $12 for Soap Sox, which are animal-shaped bath scrubbers for kids, to $1,800 for a De’Longhi Eletta Explore espresso machine.

    The complete list is, of course, too long to include here, but a few highlights include:

    Popsmith The Popper – a $199 stovetop mechanism for making popcorn that keeps burnt kernels to a minimum. It’s a high-end version of the Whirly Pop, which was especially popular 10 or so years ago (and remains on the market today).
