This Google Streetview image from May 2023 shows the area of South Tryon Street where a cyclist was killed in a hit-and-run crash Friday night. The driver now faces criminal charges for manslaughter and fleeing the scene.
A car struck and killed a bicyclist wearing a reflective vest and flashing light Friday night in the Steele Creek area before fleeing the scene, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said in a news release.
Christopher Ryan Starr died at the crash scene in the 12600 block of South Tryon Street, according to CMPD. That’s near a busy commercial area where South Tryon Street intersects with Steele Creek Road. Google Streetview imagery from May 2023 shows there are no bike lanes, protected or otherwise, in the area.
Starr was bicycling in the outbound right lane near the curb. He was wearing a reflective vest and a flashing light on his helmet when he was struck by a white Mazda CX-5 driven by Christian R Diaz Castillo, police said in a news release. The car’s front right corner struck the back of the bicycle, which sent Starr flying onto the sidewalk, according to police.
Police, the Charlotte Fire Department and Medic responded around 11:29 p.m. They found a damaged bike and an unresponsive man when they arrived. Medic pronounced Starr dead at the scene, a news release said.
Speeding and reckless driving were contributing factors in the crash, police said.
Castillo fled the scene, but was located later by police officers, a news release said. He now faces charges of felony hit and run and involuntary manslaughter.
Police say the investigation remains active. Any witnesses to the crash, or anyone with information concerning the crash, can contact Detective Mercedes at (704) 432-2169 Ext No. 5 or Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600. CANOGA PARK, Calif. (KABC) — A street racing crash left one person dead early Wednesday morning after one driver rear-ended another in Canoga Park and fled the scene, authorities said.
The violent collision occurred shortly after 1 a.m. in the 6800 block of North Topanga Canyon Boulevard, near the Vanowen Street intersection.
Two drivers were street racing in southbound lanes when one vehicle struck the other, causing the second driver to lose control and slam into a pole, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department said.
News video from the scene showed that the impact of hitting the pole nearly split the car in two.
One witness, Theo Georgescu, said the collision sounded like “something exploded.” The sound was so loud, he said, he thought the crash had happened a few feet from where he was. He went around a corner to see if anyone needed help and realized the collision was about half-a-mile away.
A description of the hit-and-run driver was not available.
The driver who died at the scene was not immediately identified.
Antioch, Calif. — – Authorities in a San Francisco Bay area community are seeking a suspect in a hit-and-run collision that killed two young brothers on Friday.
Police responded to a reported traffic collision at an intersection in Antioch around 11:30 p.m., the Antioch Police Department said in a statement.
Officers arrived at the scene of an accident involving two vehicles, including one carrying two boys, aged 12 and 13.
The boys were transported by ambulance to area hospitals but died of their injuries, police said.
The driver of one of the vehicles fled on foot, police said.
“It appears speed and reckless driving were factors in this incident,” the police statement said.
A witness reported seeing a black SUV speed past. He heard a crash and went to the scene, where he found the driver of the car that apparently was hit by the SUV, KGO-TV reported.
The witness said he helped the man, believed to be the father of the two boys, remove one of them from his car.
The Antioch police asked members of the public with any information to contact the department.

Shannon Beador recognizes she made a huge “mistake.”
Perezcious readers will recall that the 59-year-old reality star was arrested in September after she crashed her vehicle into a home in Newport Beach – reportedly while driving under the influence. She was charged with two misdemeanors, one count of DUI and one count of hit and run. But on Thursday, Shannon received nothing more than a slap on the wrist from the judge for her actions as the judge dismissed the charge of hit-and-run with property damage.
She then was sentenced to three years of probation and 40 hours of community service. Shannon also was required to complete a nine-month alcohol program. One day after her sentencing, the Bravolebrity made an appearance at BravoCon for the Real Housewives of Orange County panel – where she opened up about the incident. And Shannon seemed to be very remorseful! She told the audience on Friday:
“It’s been a tough six weeks but I will tell you that I made a terrible mistake and — I don’t want to cry. I’m incredibly grateful that I didn’t hurt anyone. I, on my own, just completed a 28-day behavioral wellness program with an alcohol component and I have been able to focus on elements of my life that were unhealthy and toxic and I believe that today, I’m going in a good and positive direction.”
Shannon then went on to say she took “inventory of my life” following the arrest. In fact, it sounds like she now agrees with her castmates about having a drinking problem. The television personality said she realized she was “absolutely” drinking way too much lately.
Hopefully, Shannon truly learned her lesson from this incident. Thoughts on what she had to say, Perezcious readers? Let us know.
What’s your biggest dating horror story? Kristin Cavallari might have you beat!
On Tuesday’s all new episode of her Let’s Be Honest podcast, she recounts the tale of a truly terrible coffee date — in which the guy full-on got arrested! Right in the middle of the date! Innerestingly this was only a few days ago — but we’ll get back to that in a moment.
The date didn’t begin especially auspiciously, as she recalls this guy, someone she used to date, setting up the meeting with her and then NOT SHOWING UP:
“Sunday, I had agreed to go meet someone that I dated for coffee. And I’m like, ‘Hey, I’m two minutes away.’ No response. I get to the coffee shop. I call him. 9 a.m. I’m all, ‘Hey, I’m here.’ He answers all disheveled, like, ‘Oh my God. My alarm didn’t go off.’ I’m like, ‘F**k you. I hate you.’”
Yeah, not a good start at all! LOLz! She continued:
“But I waited like a f**king idiot. Twenty minutes [go] by, and he walks in. And he’s like, ‘Oh my God, sorry. I was up until 5:30, had friends over. We were drinking all night.’”
That would already be a red flag for us, him being so inconsiderate staying up all night drinking when they already had a date planned. We mean, if he wants to hang with friends, fine, but call a girl to cancel if you obviously aren’t going to make it! But she was a trooper and stayed, and they ordered coffee.
But then something scary happened. A cop came up and started questioning them! He asked if they’d arrived to the coffee shop together:
“By the way, [UNNAMED DATE] is not saying anything. So, I’m standing there, like, ‘No, we didn’t drive together.’”
The cop pulled her ex out of the cafe and started “patting” him down! She couldn’t believe it:
“Next thing you know, the handcuffs go on. I’m like, ‘What the f**k is going on?’”
Then three more cops showed up and put the ex — whom she does NOT name, btw — into the squad car. She finally asked what the heck was going on, why he was being arrested, and a cop told her:
“There was a report of a hit-and-run down the street, and he matches the description of the guy.”
Whoa! Did her date really drive hungover to see her and hit someone — then leave the scene to get coffee?! She had no idea if she’d ever find out! She remembers thinking:
“Damn, I’m not going to know the full story for a long time. Great, that’s my Sunday morning.”
But the next morning, she says, she woke up to a voicemail from the guy saying, “Just got out of jail. That was crazy. Wow.” Like it was “just another day” for him! And he told her he would still like to get coffee with her!
“He was totally downplaying this like it’s nothing. I wake up, send him a voice note, like, ‘What happened? Did you get a DUI? Did you lose your license? What happened?’”
The guy explained he had hit a pole. He was still drunk from the night before and blew “over the limit” on a Breathalyzer. She got even more info when the story came out online! See, it turns out her ex is a bit of a celebrity himself! It was comedian Jeff Dye! That’s right, if you already read THAT story, you probably had no idea he was on his way to meet Kristin! Cray!
Anyway, the police report of his DUI hit the internet, so she did get the full story! And she couldn’t believe how flippantly he was treating it:
“The disconnect is so unbelievable. Also, came out in the police report he didn’t hit a pole, he hit a f**king tree. The whole thing is like, oh my God.”
Oh no! Suffice to say, she did not go for another coffee date with him! See the full story — PLUS another wild one about having a one-night stand with an Australian rugby player the night before (below)!
What would YOU do if your date got arrested in front of you, Perezcious readers? Would it depend on the crime? Or is that an instant dealbreaker??

St. Louis — The students come together at the crack of dawn from all directions, converging on this tiny house in St. Louis, Missouri, for their weekly, Wednesday visit with 66-year-old Peggy Winckowski.
“Grandma Peggy brings everyone together,” Aaron Venneman, one of those students, told CBS News.
The students who visit Grandma Peggy attend Bishop DuBourg High School and are part of what they call the Wednesday Breakfast Club.
Seeing the extraordinary spread, it’s understandable why kids come here. But what isn’t so clear is how Winckowski got roped into hosting.
The club used to meet at a diner until one day in 2021 when a student named Sam Crowe said, “You know, my grandma could cook better than this.”
So the next Wednesday, they all showed up at Winckowski’s doorstep.
“I’m like, OK, and they came all school year — every Wednesday,” Winckowski said.
The breakfasts continued merrily until July 2022 when all joy was lost.
Peggy’s grandson, Sam Crowe, a sophomore at Bishop DuBourg, was killed in a hit-and-run. The boy was beloved, so of course, breakfast was the last thing on anyone’s mind.
And yet, the very next Wednesday, and virtually every Wednesday since, the kids have returned to Grandma Peggy’s, and in numbers far greater than before.
“Sam would be so proud,” Winckowski said. “Look at what he started.”
Everyone has come together for a heaping helping of healing.
“It melts my heart,” Winckowski said.
“It’s really not about the food, it’s just about being together,” Brendan Crowe said.
“We benefit from her, she benefits from us,” Mya Dozier added. “It’s like we feed off each other.”
Everyone grieves differently, but those who manage it best always seem to blanket themselves with kindred spirits, sharing the burden and teaching each other to laugh again. And in the process, they are building a tradition to ensure the memories are as stable and sustaining as a warm meal at grandma’s.
A suspect has been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run which occurred earlier this month near the White House while a driver was fleeing from U.S. Secret Service officers, authorities said.
Thirty-three-year-old Benjamin Robertson of Washington, D.C., was arrested Thursday on second-degree murder charges, U.S. Park Police confirmed.
On the afternoon of July 12, Secret Service officers attempted to pull over a driver for having an expired registration at an intersection near the Ellipse and the Washington Monument, the agency said, which is located just a block south of the White House.
The driver sped away, running a red light and hitting and killing a 75-year-old Philadelphia man who was in a crosswalk in the process, the Secret Service reported. The victim was later identified by police as Bing Wong. A 13-year-old girl was also treated by paramedics at the scene for minor injuries.
Authorities did not immediately confirm how Robertson was identified as a suspect, nor the details of his capture Thursday.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A police officer fatally shot a man early Sunday while conducting a wellness check at a home in St. Petersburg, officials said.
Just before 4 a.m. Sunday, St. Petersburg police officers responded to a report of a hit and run. Officers found the bumper of the suspect’s car at the scene with the license plate still attached, according to a news release from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
The officers ran a check on the license plate and found it was registered to a woman at an apartment in St. Petersburg. They went to the address and attempted to make contact with the car owner, but no one answered.
Eventually they made contact with the car’s owner, who now lives in an assisted living home. She told investigators she was concerned about her son, who lives in the apartment.
They returned to the apartment and attempted to talk to Gus Spanoudis, 63, sometime after 6 a.m. Sunday, the report said.
The officers, with assistance from the St. Petersburg Fire Department, made a forced entry into the apartment and found Spanoudis in a back bedroom.
Detectives said Spanoudis made suicidal statements and pointed a firearm at Officer Jace Morrow. The officer issued several commands to drop the firearm, but Spanoudis did not do so, the news release said.
The officer then fired at Spanoudis, who was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.
The shooting is being investigated by the Pinellas County Use of Deadly Force Investigative Taskforce, which was created in 2020 to ensure that investigations of use of force incidents are thorough, complete, and objective.
Morrow will be placed on no duty status until investigation is completed.
JONESBORO — The parents of a 7-year-old girl killed in a hit-and-run accident on Sept. 4 have been arrested for their part in the crime.
Clayton County police said Christal Williams, 33, and Jordan Wint, 36, left their three children alone in a hotel room for nearly four hours to deliver food. At 2:15 a.m., Keymoriona Williams, 7, was captured on video in the Magnolia Bay Hotel & Suites parking lot. She left the lot 10 minutes later walking toward Southside Commercial Parkway and onto Tara Boulevard.
Police found the hotel room door open where Keymoriona had been with her two 9-year-old siblings who were still asleep. A cell phone had been left with the children to call their parents in needed.
Christal Williams and Wint were arrested on Oct. 4 and charged with cruelty to children, contributing to the deprivation of a minor and reckless conduct.
The two 9-year-old children were removed by the Department of Family and Children’s Services and will be placed with family in another state, police said.
Police are still looking for the driver of the vehicle. Anyone with information is asked to call the Clayton County Police Department at 770-473-3983 or Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS.

RENO, Nev. — Thousands of people in hundreds of cars took over northern Nevada parking lots and intersections Friday night and into Saturday, performing stunts in souped-up vehicles and leading to crashes and arrests, police said.
Police beefed up nighttime staffing after social media posts urged people from San Francisco and Portland, Oregon, to come to the “sideshow” in Reno, Police Lt. Michael Browett said.
The disturbances started late Friday as several hundred cars and their occupants met in the parking lot of a still-open Walmart store. Police tried to break up the crowds and drivers sped off, meeting up again at several intersections and industrial parks into Saturday morning. A dozen people were arrested, 14 cars impounded and 33 people were issued citations.
Browett said Reno is just the latest city to see late-night takeovers by auto enthusiasts who ignore law enforcement efforts to stop the illegal and dangerous activity.
“I don’t know the underlying movement is with this group, but it goes a little beyond cars,” Browett said. “They’re very anti-authoritarian, and they basically just show up and do whatever they want.”
Cities across the country have been dealing with similar issues in recent years, including Phoenix, San Francisco and Chicago. Last weekend, three people were killed and several others badly hurt in crashes related to a pop-up sideshow in Wildwood, New Jersey.
In Reno, no one was seriously injured. But Browett said those arrested faces charges including reckless driving, hit and run causing injury and weapons possession.

NEW YORK — The man charged with fatally striking “Gone Girl” actor Lisa Banes with an electric scooter last year pleaded guilty to manslaughter on Wednesday and is expected to be sentenced to one to three years in prison.
Brian Boyd, 27, will be sentenced on Nov. 30 in the death of Banes, who was hit by the scooter Boyd was operating as she crossed a New York City street in June 2021.
Banes was hospitalized and died on July 14, 2021, at age 65. She had appeared in movies including “Gone Girl” in 2014 and “Cocktail” in 1988 and on TV shows including “Nashville,” “Madam Secretary,” “Masters of Sex” and “NCIS.”
Boyd, who fled after crashing into Banes, was arrested weeks later. He pleaded guilty on Wednesday to second-degree manslaughter and leaving the scene of an incident without reporting,
The sentence promised to Boyd was less than the three to nine years that prosecutors from the Manhattan district attorney’s office had sought.
Boyd’s attorney didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
