A young man was killed Wednesday in a two-vehicle hit-and-run collision on a Spring Valley freeway, authorities said.

California Highway Patrol officers responded to northbound state Route 125 south of Troy Street at about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, where they discovered a Lexus that had veered off the highway and hit a tree, according to Officer Jasmine Lopez.

“For reasons still under investigation, the driver of the Lexus unsafely changed lanes and crashed into an unknown light-colored sedan,” Lopez said. “The driver of the Lexus lost control and drove up the east embankment and collided into a tree.”

The 21-year-old Spring Valley man who was driving the Lexus died. The CHP did not release his name.

One witness to the crash reported seeing the other car stop on the east shoulder after the crash, with the driver exiting, then re-entering the vehicle and fleeing northbound on SR-125, according to the CHP.

It was unknown if drugs and/or alcohol were a factor in the crash, or if anyone else was injured. The investigation is ongoing.

“Fleeing the scene of a crash is not only a criminal offense, but it is a betrayal of the responsibility every driver has to others on the road,” CHP Capt. Michael Monteagudo said. “If you’re involved in a crash, stop when it is safe to do so, provide aid if needed, and contact emergency services.”

Any witnesses who may have additional information regarding the crash were encouraged to contact the CHP El Cajon area office at 619-219-6900.

  • Broward Sheriff seeks public’s help in Tamarac hit-and-run case

    [ad_1]

The Broward Sheriff’s Office is on the hunt for the driver of a Toyota Camry that struck down a pedestrian in Tamarac last week and is seeking the public’s help.

At around 11:55 p.m. Saturday surveillance footage of the crash shows a man crossing the southbound lanes of North State Road 7 mid-block north of Commercial Boulevard, according to deputies.

The driver of the 2002-2006 silver Toyota Camry was going southbound in the left lane when the driver’s side bumper collided with the pedestrian sending him to the ground, investigators say.

As the man lay on the road, deputies say a black sedan drove over him and continued southbound. At this point, other pedestrians and drivers stopped to help the man.

The surveillance footage shows the driver of the Toyota pull into a nearby Shell gas station and exit the car and walk back towards where the pedestrian lay as good Samaritans attempted to help. The Toyota driver then goes back to his car and leaves going southbound on North State Road 7.

Tamarac Fire Rescue arrived and took the pedestrian to a local hospital in critical condition.

Investigators say the Toyota may have minor damage to the front bumper on the driver side. The car is also missing the passenger side front hubcap. Detectives describe the driver as possibly an adult male who was wearing dark Bermuda shorts and a light sleeveless shirt.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about the Toyota involved in the hit-and-run, the driver’s identity, or the vehicle’s tag or location to contact BSO THI Detective M. Wiley at 954-321-4841 or submit a tip through the SaferWatch App. If you wish to remain anonymous, contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).

Crimestoppers is offering up to $5000 for a tip leading to an arrest.

  • 2 vehicles may have struck Aurora pedestrian, who died, without stopping

    [ad_1]

A man struck by multiple vehicles while crossing Tower Road late Thursday night, including two that reportedly left the scene, has died from his injuries, according to the Aurora Police Department.

Just before midnight on Thursday, Aurora officers responded to reports of a pedestrian down in the roadway after witnesses found a man, 23, lying in the crosswalk along the Unnamed Creek Trail at the 2700 block of South Tower Road.

The witnesses reported that two vehicles may have hit the man and left the scene. It is unclear if he would have survived his injuries if the first driver had stopped and sought assistance. A third vehicle also hit the man, but that driver stopped and is cooperating with the investigation.

Officers found no indications that alcohol or drugs were a factor. It isn’t known whether the pedestrian had the right of way or what the traffic signal indicated at the time of the accident.

  • Driver with prior DUI convictions fatally strikes teen walking to school

    [ad_1]

A California man with two DUI convictions has been charged with murder in a hit-and-run crash that killed a 13-year-old boy as he walked to school, authorities said.

Bradley Gene Funk, 59, who was on probation for a 2021 DUI conviction, allegedly struck a curb early Tuesday in Dana Point and plowed into Luis Adrian Morales-Pacheco as the boy headed to Niguel Hills Middle School with his older brother, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

Funk, of Dana Point, allegedly fled the scene after striking the teen, whose brother was not injured. He was arrested a few miles away after his white GMC pickup lost a tire and witnesses helped deputies track him down, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said.

Luis, of San Juan Capistrano, suffered serious injuries in the collision and died at a hospital.

“The death of a child leaves a hole in the heart of our entire community,” Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said in a statement Thursday. “Luis did not have to die and the driver who killed him was told over and over again of the lives he would be risking if he got behind the wheel intoxicated, and he did it anyway. And now Luis’ family is forced to live without their little boy whose smile could light up a room—all because a stranger made a selfish decision and Luis and his entire family paid the ultimate price.”

Funk, who pleaded guilty to DUI in two separate cases, was charged Thursday with second-degree murder and hit-and-run with permanent and serious injury. He remains in custody as of early Friday, jail records show.

In California, motorists convicted of DUI are required to receive a Watson advisement—informing them they could face a murder charge if they kill someone while driving under the influence. Funk received that instruction in both of his cases, Spitzer said.

Funk, who was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI, murder and hit-and-run, was on probation in connection with his prior convictions, sheriff officials said. Funk had been convicted in DUI cases in November 2020 and January 2021, according to court records cited by the Los Angeles Times.

In July 2020, Funk was booked on suspicion of DUI in two separate incidents within three days after hitting two cars near Capistrano Union High School before fleeing. He later pleaded guilty to misdemeanor hit-and-run with property damage and DUI in one incident and DUI in the second, the Times reported.

Funk was sentenced to five years’ probation, including a stipulation that he couldn’t drive a vehicle with alcohol in his system. His license was suspended in July 2021 and reinstated in February 2023, DMV records cited by the newspaper show.

Funk remains held without bail ahead of his arraignment scheduled for December 10. His court-appointed attorney, Joel Garson, said he didn’t have enough evidence Thursday to seek bail in the case, KTTV reported.

An online fundraiser for Luis’ family had eclipsed $59,000 as of early Friday.

“Luis Adrian was a bright light in the world known for his smile,” the GoFundMe listing reads. “He was generous, he loved to protect younger kids, he also loved his family and God with all his heart. He was always happy, loving and hungry.”

Classmates of the charismatic sixth-grader are also struggling to process Tuesday’s deadly crash, KABC reported.

“He was a very kindhearted person,” classmate Harper Waters told the station. “He didn’t make just me, but he made a lot of kids smile. I’d walk into that class with such a bad attitude, and I’d come out with a smile because of him.”

  • Chicago doctor and avid cyclist in coma after hit-and-run near Illinois Medical District, wife says

    [ad_1]

CHICAGO (WLS) — A Chicago doctor remains in the intensive care unit nine days after a suffering a brain injury in a hit-and-run crash near the Illinois Medical District.

Ray Lee is a physiatrist who specializes in spinal cord injuries, and he is avid cyclist.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

“He was biking home from work and was struck by a vehicle. It was a hit-and-run. He was somewhat conscious at the scene, but he’s been in a coma since then,” said Fani Lee, Ray’s wife. “This was his commute. It started in COVID. It was a good stress release for him, quickly became part of the biking community in Chicago. He loves it.”

Chicago police put out an alert about the hit-and-run. CPD reported that at about 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 29 at Damen and Van Buren, a red 2010 Ford Fusion sedan hit Ray. The car had an Illinois license plate reading, “BN 64959.”

Fani is an occupational therapist. She shared that it was Ray’s business was to help others recover from accidents or injuries. Now, he is the one in need of help.

“He’s just the nicest, sweetest guy. We’ve had patients, previous coworkers. ‘Everybody loves Ray,’ we always say, like the TV show,” Fani said. “The brain does heal, but it takes a very long time, so it’s going to be at least months, possibly even years before we can see if there is a full recovery. That’s what we are hoping for.”

Fani and Ray have two children and community of supporters. Fani said she is grateful for Ray’s care and for all the support, and she hopes that anyone driving in Chicago will be more aware of cyclists and their safety.

Fani said Ray was wearing a helmet that actually cracked after he was thrown 30 feet. She says he likely would not have survived if he was not wearing a helmet.

Fani and Chicago police welcome any information about who may have been driving that red car on Oct. 29.

  • Arrest made, truck impounded in fatal hit-and-run of Pike Electric lineman

    [ad_1]

An arrest has been made in the hit-and-run death of a lineman with Pike Electric in Johnston County.

Ronald Thomas Mayo, 44, of Smithfield, was arrested at a residence off US-70 in Johnston County late Thursday, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said.

Mayo is charged with felony hit and run involving death. He was transported to the Johnston County Detention Center awaiting his first court appearance Friday at 2 p.m. He was being held under $50,000 bond.

The flatbed Sewer Cleaner truck he was driving was located and impounded.

The charges stem from an incident just before 5:30 p.m. Wednesday on Live Oak Church Road. The highway patrol said that Mayo disregarded a stop signal given by traffic control personnel who were halting traffic due to low-hanging power lines.

Repair technicians were working on the power lines as the truck traveled through the scene and became entangled with one of the low-hanging wires. This caused one of the repair technicians, James P. Rudzki, 29, of Wendell, to fall to the ground, resulting in fatal injuries.

Another lineman was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The highway patrol said that Mayo failed to remain at the scene.

The owner of the truck, who is a family member of the driver, released a statement following the arrest

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family of the Pike electric worker recently killed in the unfortunate accident. The driver of the vehicle was not even aware of their apparent involvement until recently. There is much incorrect information being shared and we look forward to a complete investigation of this unfortunate incident.”

  • Suspect in fatal Denver hit-and-run at 16th Street drove onto sidewalk, hit victim

    [ad_1]

The suspect in a fatal hit-and-run on the edge of Denver’s 16th Street pedestrian mall abandoned his car and fled the scene on foot, according to court documents.

Milton McBride, 27, allegedly drove through the gate of a Denver parking garage early Sunday morning, hit another vehicle on Market Street and hopped the curb near the 16th Street intersection, according to his arrest affidavit.

When he drove onto the sidewalk, McBride struck a billboard-type sign and pushed it onto the victim, who died at the scene, police wrote in the affidavit.

McBride was arrested Sunday on suspicion of vehicular homicide. As of Tuesday morning, he had not yet been charged, and his next court date had not been set.

Denver officers responded to the fatal crash at 16th and Market streets shortly after 2:15 a.m. Sunday. When they arrived, they found the dead victim and the suspect vehicle, but the driver had fled the scene.

Witnesses told investigators that the driver got out of his vehicle after the crash and left on foot without calling 911 or rendering medical aid, police said.

Officers found McBride roughly 1/5 mile away, in the 1700 block of Wazee Street, at about 2:45 a.m. Sunday, according to court documents.

When they contacted McBride, officers noted his speech was slurred, his breath smelled like alcohol, he was staggering and stumbling and his eyes were bloodshot, according to the arrest affidavit.

McBride was not offered a voluntary field sobriety test because he was immediately detained and, after being positively identified by a witness as the suspect driver, arrested, police said in the document.

Paramedics took McBride to a nearby hospital for blood testing. During that time, he repeatedly told officers that he hadn’t hit anyone and no one had died, according to the affidavit.

The results of the blood test were not publicly available as of Tuesday.

McBride’s license was suspended at the time of the crash, and he had a warrant out for his arrest from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office for a domestic violence and child abuse case, court records show.
