  • Driver sentenced to 20 years in 2024 crash that killed young Arlington couple

    A 34-year-old man was sentenced to 20 years in prison after admitting to being the driver in a hit-and-run crash that killed a young Arlington couple in late 2024, the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office said.

    Nathan Vaughn pleaded guilty this week to charges of manslaughter and collision involving death, District Attorney Phil Sorrells said.

    Vaughn was traveling between bars late in the evening on Dec. 15, 2024, when his car swerved off the road and struck 23-year-old Kiara Valdez and her boyfriend, 22-year-old Jahlil Kirkland. Valdez and Kirkland were walking home from dinner on the sidewalk along East Lamar Boulevard at the time, and Vaughn did not stop to try to help them.

    Investigators determined Vaughn was the driver after media coverage of the crash resulted in a tip, police said.

    The tipster told police they had seen Vaughn’s car, a silver Chevrolet Malibu with heavy front-end damage, in the parking lot of a bar. Vaughn was later arrested and charged with the counts of collision involving death.

    At the time of his arrest in this case, Vaughn was out on bond for a November 2023 charge of driving while intoxicated, according to Tarrant County court records. On that occasion, Vaughn was found to have a blood alcohol content of 0.15, nearly twice the legal limit of 0.08 for Texas drivers.

    Valdez’s mother, Nicole, described her as “pure joy” at a balloon release shortly after the crash.

    “That crash literally crashed our family’s life,” Nicole Valdez said. “It’s in pieces now, and we’re stuck trying to pick up those pieces.”

  • Police: Man killed, woman injured in Petworth hit-and-run involving garbage truck and e-bike – WTOP News

    A Sunday update by D.C. police revealed that the Petworth hit-and-run involving a garbage truck and an e-bike involved a man and a woman, not two women.

    Police are continuing to investigate a crash in D.C. where a garbage truck hit two people on an e-bike and left the scene.

    An update from D.C. police Sunday clarified that a man was driving the e-bike and that a woman was riding as a passenger. Police originally reported Friday that it was two women on the e-bike.

    Kenny Jimmenez Rivera, 26, of Northwest D.C., was operating the e-bike and died in the crash, police said.

    It happened in Petworth in the 4100 block of Kansas Avenue near the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Upshur Street in Northwest D.C. on Friday shortly after 2 p.m.

    Police said an investigation showed that a trash truck and an e-bike were both approaching the intersection at the same time, when the trash truck made a right turn into the 900 block of Upshur Street and struck the e-bike.

    The trash truck left the scene after striking the e-bike, police said.

    D.C. Fire and EMS responded to the incident and after all lifesaving measures failed, Rivera was pronounced dead at the scene.

    The woman was transported to an area hospital for treatment of critical injuries, according to police.

    Following an investigation, the trash truck was located in Hyattsville, Maryland, and detectives have identified the truck driver. Police said an investigation is ongoing.

    D.C. police are looking for the driver of a garbage truck they say hit two women in Petworth on Friday afternoon and drove off, killing one of them and injuring the other.

    D.C. police are looking for the driver of a garbage truck they say struck two women in Petworth on Friday afternoon and drove off, killing one of them and injuring the other.

    The crash happened just after 2 p.m. at the intersection of Upshur Street and Georgia Avenue NW.

    Both women were riding on an e-bicycle together when the crash happened.

    One of the women was pronounced deceased at the scene. The woman who survived was taken to the hospital with critical injuries.

    Police were able to locate the white and green trash truck labeled “244” with “WB Waste Solutions LLC” on the side and MPD’s Major Crash detectives are investigating the case. The truck was later found, however the driver has not been identified.

  • Driver arrested in Thornton hit-and-run that killed a 14-year-old boy, police say

    The driver of the car involved in a fatal Saturday night hit-and-run that killed a 14-year-old boy was arrested Sunday, Thornton police said.

    Thornton officers responded to the fatal crash near Huron Street and West Thornton Parkway just before 9:45 p.m. Saturday, according to a news release from the agency.

    A 14-year-old boy riding a small motorized bike north on Huron Street was hit from behind near the intersection, police said. The suspect vehicle, a 2013 BMW 328i, then fled the scene without stopping, according to the release.

    Paramedics took the teenager to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The Adams County Coroner’s Office will identify the 14-year-old at a later date.

    The Colorado Bureau of Investigation issued a Medina Alert for the car on Sunday morning. That alert was in the process of being canceled at 1:33 p.m. Sunday, after police found the car and took the driver into custody.

    The driver had not been publicly identified as of Sunday afternoon, and police did not specify what charges he was arrested on investigation of.

    THORNTON, Colo. — Thornton police are investigating a Saturday night hit‑and‑run that killed a 14‑year‑old boy riding a small motorized bike.

    The Colorado Bureau of Investigation issued a Medina Alert for a black 2013 BMW 328i with a fully black version of Colorado license plate # FBWX60.

    Around 9:42 p.m., police said the boy was riding a small motorized bike northbound on Huron Street near the intersection of W. Thornton Parkway when the speeding BMW struck the bike from behind.

    Police said after the high-speed crash, the black 2013 BMW 328i continued northbound on Huron Street without stopping.

    Paramedics transported the teenager to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The coroner’s office will release his identity at a later time.

    Investigators obtained suspect vehicle information with help from license plate reader technology.

    “Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones affected by this tragic crash,” said Thornton Police Chief Jim Baird in a release. “We are committed to finding the person responsible and urge anyone with information to come forward. Technology like license plate readers helps us act quickly, but we still need the public’s help to bring this investigation to a safe conclusion.”

    Police urge anyone with information on the whereabouts of the black 2013 BMW 328i with Colorado license plate # FBWX60 to contact 720‑977‑5150.

  • 2 children, driver seriously injured in Denver hit-and-run with Dodge Challenger

    Denver police are looking for a blue Dodge Challenger involved in a hit-and-run crash on Interstate 25 that seriously injured another driver and two children.

    The crash happened around 5:30 a.m. Jan. 20 , the Denver Police Department said in a crime alert.

    The Challenger was driving north on I-25 near Eighth Avenue when the driver changed lanes and hit a white sedan, causing the sedan to hit the center concrete wall.

    Two children and the driver of the sedan were seriously injured in the crash, Denver police said. The driver of the Challenger fled the scene and was last seen exiting onto Colfax Avenue.

  • Driver in deadly San Jose hit-and-run approached witnesses, picked up bumper, police say

    Police in San Jose are searching for a driver following a hit-and-run collision that killed a pedestrian last week.

    According to officers, the pedestrian was crossing the road near South Bascom Avenue and Borello Drive on Jan. 25, between 5:45 and 6:05 p.m., when he was struck by a driver traveling southbound on Bascom. Police said at the time the pedestrian was outside of a marked crosswalk.

    The victim was taken to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. His name has not been released.

    In an update Wednesday, police said the driver briefly approached witnesses on scene and picked up what was believed to be the car’s bumper before fleeing in an unknown direction.

    Witnesses described the suspect vehicle as a dark-colored sedan. The driver was described by witnesses as an adult male between 30-40 years old with a beard. He was wearing a blue sweatshirt with yellow lettering, believed to be either “SJSU” or “SDU.”

    Police said the hit-and-run was the city’s first fatal traffic collision and first traffic death of 2026.

    DENVER — Police in Denver are asking for the public’s help identifying the driver of a Chevrolet Tahoe involved in a hit-and-run that seriously injured two pedestrians on Friday.

    The incident occurred around 7:22 p.m. on the city’s east side.

    Investigators say the driver of a 2015-2020 Black Chevy Tahoe was turning from N. Ash Street onto E. 8th Avenue when they struck the victims in a marked crosswalk, then fled.

    The victims were transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

    The vehicle may have damage on the front passenger side.

    A Colorado man is facing a felony charge after police say he struck and killed a pedestrian in Denver’s Lincoln Park neighborhood, according to court records.

    Alejandro Sifuentes, 29, was arrested Jan. 7, five days after Denver police say he hit 19-year-old Angelo Simpson while Simpson was crossing North Kalamath Street near West 11th Avenue on the evening of Jan. 2.

    Sifuentes was initially arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident involving death, both felonies, according to an arrest affidavit.

    Court records on Thursday showed he is charged with one felony count of leaving the scene of an accident involving death.

    Witnesses told police a gray Honda SUV was speeding at 100 mph when it hit Simpson as he was crossing the street in a crosswalk, according to an affidavit.

    Investigators found the Honda with front-end and windshield damage parked in front of a Lakewood home, and tipsters later told police that Sifuentes talked about hitting someone while he was driving too fast to stop.

    Sifuentes also told people he went to a friend’s house, cleaned blood off the vehicle and put a cover over it, then got rid of his phone and bought a new one “so he could not be followed,” according to the affidavit.

    A D.C. man was indicted Wednesday on 36 charges related to an October incident in which a vehicle plowed into a child’s birthday party, killing a woman and injuring more than a dozen people.

    Sunday Joseph, 66, is accused of reversing his vehicle into the front yard of a home in Bladensburg, Maryland, where a child’s birthday party was being held inside a tent.

    Ashley Hernandez Gutierrez, 31, was killed and 13 others were injured, eight of them children.

    Joseph ran from the scene of the crash and was arrested the next day, according to prosecutors.

    “A celebration meant for joy and family turned into a scene of devastation, leaving one woman dead and many others injured, including children,” State’s Attorney Tara Jackson said in October.

    He’s charged with grossly negligent manslaughter by motor vehicle, three counts of hit-and-run involving serious bodily injury, 11 counts of failure to return and remain at the scene of a crash, and 11 counts of reckless driving.

    The most serious charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

    Joseph is being held without bond and is expected back in court for a trial on Jan. 30.

  • Man arrested after hit-and-run crash that killed woman crossing road near bus stop in Aurora

    Aurora Police traffic investigators announced they have arrested a suspect after a woman was killed early Friday while trying to cross the road near a bus stop in a hit-and-run crash that forced the closure of Havana Street.

    Police arrested Marcos Ortega-Lopez, 31, on suspicion of leaving the scene of a fatal crash, a felony, according to an agency posting on social media Friday afternoon.

    But police haven’t located the vehicle involved — a 2007 blue Toyota Corolla (license plate CYXB39) with front-end damage — and appealed to the public for help via Aurora911, 303-627-3100 or @CrimeStoppersCO (720-913-STOP).

    The crash occurred at about 5:15 a.m. near the intersection of Havana and East 4th Way. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, Aurora Police Department spokesman Matt Longshore said.

    “She was crossing the street, over Havana. It was a hit and run,” he said.

    The police at first weren’t certain about the vehicle involved because of conflicting reports.

    A former student athlete at Queens University of Charlotte was killed in a hit-and-run while walking along The Plaza in Charlotte, investigators say.

    Lance Andreas Jesus Sotelo, 25, died at the scene, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said in a Jan. 15 news release.

    Sotelo was a past member of the Men’s Cross Country and Track and Field teams at Queens University, and had competed as recently as 2025, the university reports.

    The deadly crash occurred around 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, in the 3300 block of The Plaza, which is largely commercial, maps show.

    “Upon arrival, officers located a severely injured pedestrian … in the roadway. MEDIC responded and pronounced Mr. Sotelo deceased on the scene,” CMPD said.

    “The preliminary investigation indicates that the vehicle that struck Mr. Sotelo was a white Chevrolet Impala. The Impala was traveling southwest on The Plaza at East 36th Street when the vehicle ran a red light at the intersection and struck Mr. Sotelo, before fleeing the scene.”

    On Thursday, Jan. 15, Q’Laundra Kadri Hood, 28, was identified as the driver, CMPD said. Hood turned herself in at the Hickory Grove Division office, officials said.

    She has been charged with:

    • Felony hit-and-run
    • Involuntary manslaughter
    • No operator’s license
    • Failing to stop at a red light

    A 2023 Facebook post by Queens University of Charlotte noted Sotelo was a student-athlete, resident assistant and student body president at the time. He graduated in 2023, then began work on an MBA from the McColl School of Business, the university reported. His is originally from Dalton, Georgia, where he earned Cross Country MVP honors in high school, according to the Cross Country team roster.

    “I would never want to be at a school where I am just a number. I love being somewhere where I am ‘somebody.’ Somebody that people know, somebody that people say ‘hi’ to across campus, and somebody who is able to have an impact,” Sotelo was quoted saying in a 2023 article published by the university.

    A GoFundMe campaign is raising money for funeral expenses. “He had no life insurance and had just landed a nice job the day he was struck,” the campaign reports. “He loved to run, and that is what he was doing when he was killed.”

    Among those posting tributes to Sotelo on social media was Juan Diego “JD” Mazuera Arias, councilman for Charlotte’s District 5.

    “I knew Lance. We weren’t close, but we attended Queens University of Charlotte together. I last saw him at an event last December. He should still be here,” Arias wrote in a Facebook post.

    “It was preventable. … Lance was killed on a street that is part of Charlotte’s High Injury Network — roads we already know are dangerous. That is a failure of design and a failure of urgency.”

    A man was killed after being hit by two vehicles in a hit-and-run crash in Fort Worth’s northside Sunday evening, police said.

    Officers responded to the crash at the intersection of Ephriham Avenue and NW 24th Street at 6:14 p.m. Sunday. . The man was hit by two vehicles, one of which fled the scene, police said.

    First responders performed CPR on the man but he was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, according to Fort Worth police.

  • Motorcyclist injured in Denver rush hour hit-and-run on Interstate 70

    Denver police are searching for the driver responsible for a Monday morning hit-and-run on Interstate 70 that injured a motorcyclist, according to the agency.

    An unknown driver hit the motorcyclist while changing lanes on westbound I-70 near Sheridan Boulevard at about 7:15 a.m. Monday, according to an alert from the Denver Police Department.

    Police said the suspect was driving a white or light-colored Jeep Cherokee with unknown license plates and fled the scene after the crash.

    Paramedics took the motorcyclist, who has not been publicly identified, to the hospital with serious injuries, police said.

    San Francisco police said officers are looking for a driver who hit and killed a pedestrian on Wednesday evening.

    Around 6:05, officers were called to the 5500 block of Mission Street, near Foote and Naglee avenues, for a report of a person being hit by a vehicle.

    Officers found the victim when they arrived, and police said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

    Police said the driver and the vehicle were not at the scene, and they ask anyone with information to call them at 415-575-4444.

    A woman was seriously injured after she was approached by a man who stole her vehicle and hit her with it in the parking lot of Sutter Roseville Medical Center on Tuesday, according to the police department.Roseville police said officers responded to the hospital for a reported carjacking on Tuesday evening. Officials said 30-year-old Christian Somerville, of Orangevale, had just been discharged as a patient when he approached a woman in the parking lot and asked for a ride. When the woman declined, Somerville allegedly entered her vehicle and drove off, and in the process, hit her with the vehicle. Roseville police said the woman had serious injuries, and Somerville also hit a parked vehicle as he sped off. The victim’s vehicle was found an hour after the carjacking, Roseville police said, but Somerville was not in its vicinity. However, he was found on Wednesday afternoon in Orangevale and subsequently arrested. Somerville was booked into the South Placer County Jail for carjacking, assault with a deadly weapon, hit and run with injury and hit and run. “We are grateful for the swift response of local law enforcement and our Department of Protective Services, who acted quickly to ensure the safety of our staff, patients and visitors,” Sutter Health said in a statement to KCRA 3, in part. “Our priority remains the well-being of our employees, patients and visitors. We will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement in their ongoing investigation.”Sutter Health also noted it had several security measures in place, including security patrols across all of its campuses and medical facilities, emergency call stations and rapid response protocols and safety escort services for patients and staff who request them.     Roseville police said the woman had serious injuries, and Somerville also hit a parked vehicle as he sped off.

    The victim’s vehicle was found an hour after the carjacking, Roseville police said, but Somerville was not in its vicinity. However, he was found on Wednesday afternoon in Orangevale and subsequently arrested.

    Somerville was booked into the South Placer County Jail for carjacking, assault with a deadly weapon, hit and run with injury and hit and run.

    “We are grateful for the swift response of local law enforcement and our Department of Protective Services, who acted quickly to ensure the safety of our staff, patients and visitors,” Sutter Health said in a statement to KCRA 3, in part. “Our priority remains the well-being of our employees, patients and visitors. We will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement in their ongoing investigation.”

    Sutter Health also noted it had several security measures in place, including security patrols across all of its campuses and medical facilities, emergency call stations and rapid response protocols and safety escort services for patients and staff who request them.

    Somerville is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.

  • Arrest made in fatal hit-and-run of Escondido boy

    Escondido Police officers arrested an Escondido man Saturday in connection with the hit-and-run death of an 11-year-old boy on November 26.

    Hector Balderas Amador, 44, was booked into the Vista Detention Facility Saturday on suspicion of felony hit and run causing death. The vehicle involved in the crash was also recovered, according to police.

    Officers responded Wednesday at about 5 p.m. to the 400 block of East Washington Avenue, at the intersection of Hickory Street, where they found Aiden Antonio Torres De Paz injured after being struck by a vehicle in the roadway in front of his house, according to Lt. Craig Miller.

    Miller said the driver then left the scene.

    Witnesses said Aiden went into the street to retrieve a soccer ball when he was hit.

    He was transported to Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego where he succumbed to his injuries Thanksgiving morning, police said.

    “We are grateful and appreciative for the trust and partnership our police department shares with the community, which aided in the identification and arrest of the driver in this tragic incident,” Escondido Police Chief Ken Plunkett said.

    Balderas was listed on the jail log Saturday as being held in lieu of $50,000 bail, with an arraignment scheduled for Wednesday in Vista Superior Court.

  • Rohnert police searching for vehicle in connection to deadly hit-and-run

    Rohnert police said they are investigating a fatal hit-and-run that happened on Friday evening.

    Around 6:30 p.m., a driver hit a pedestrian and was seen driving away westbound on Southwest Boulevard, from Snyder Lane.

    The person who was struck died at the scene, police said.

    Investigators said they believe the vehicle is a 2014 to 2018 Chevy Silverado based on the crash debris left at the scene. And police said witnesses told them the truck appeared to be black with a lift kit and chrome wheels.

    It should also have a substantial amount of front-end damage.
