Muhammad Ali, perhaps Louisville’s most famous native, proclaimed that “my greatness came and started in Louisville, Kentucky,” and declared that it was “one of the greatest cities in America.” The Greatest had a point. Louisville is the largest city in the Bluegrass State, and alongside its Southern charm and Midwestern heartiness, it offers a rich history, captivating architecture and green spaces galore. Situated on the Ohio River, the city took its name from the French in 1780—Louisville literally means “Louis’ city,” namechecking King Louis XVI in tribute to his support during the Revolutionary War.
For history and architecture buffs, downtown’s West Main Historical District has the largest collection of cast iron facades anywhere outside of Soho, New York. One of Louisville’s many monikers is Park City, so-called for the 18 parks designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, who was also the visionary behind Manhattan’s Central Park.
Kentucky is the birthplace of bourbon, and the spirit’s aficionados can honor that heritage by following the Urban Bourbon trail, which includes bars, restaurants and distilleries serving the tipple across downtown’s Whiskey Row and beyond. Most famously, it is home to the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, “the most exciting two minutes in sport,” which celebrates its 150th anniversary in May 2024.
For a long time, Louisville struggled to attract tourists outside of the Kentucky Derby. But over the last several years, an influx of young creatives, often fleeing high rents in bigger cities, have debuted a dizzying array of buzzy restaurants, trendy bars, locally curated concept stores and craft distilleries that have drawn a steady flow of travelers to the locale known as the Gateway to the South.
The city’s growing popularity has increased demand for stylish hotels. What Louisville lacks in corporate 5-star hotels, it makes up for in swanky properties that embrace the city’s charming quirks. If you’re ready to pack your bags, there are old-world grande dames, Parisian-inspired contemporary stays, an art museum-cum-inn and a hotel built in a former disco factory that’s keeping night fever alive and well. Below, see the best accommodations to book for your next trip to Bourbon City.
American Express has announced changes to the Hilton business card and they are overwhelming negative. Changes are as follows:
Annual fee will increase from $95 to $195. Applies to anybody that applies from today and for existing cardholders it’ll go into effect for card renewals on July 1, 2024
New $240 Hilton credit. Get up to $60 per quarter on purchases made at Hilton properties (including bookings and incidentals)
Removal of Hilton Honors Free Night Rewards benefit (previously required $15,000 in spend in a calendar year). Eligible purchases made through June 30, 2024 will count towards this certificate
Removal of Priority Pass select. If you enrolled in the Priority Pass Select program on or before June 30, 2023, your Priority Pass membership will continue through June 30, 2024 and will be cancelled as of July 1, 2024. If you enrolled in the Priority Pass Select program between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024, your membership will continue through March 31, 2025 and will be cancelled as of April 1, 2025. Any unused lounge visits will be forfeited at the time of cancellation.
National Emerald Executive status
Changes to earning rates:
5x on all purchases for the first $100,000 in spend per calendar year, then 3x
Removal of the 6x categories:
6X Hilton Honors Bonus Points on U.S. gas stations, wireless telephone services purchased directly from U.S. service producers and U.S. purchases for shipping
6X Hilton Honors Bonus Points on U.S. restaurants, flights booked directly with airlines or amextravel.com, and car rentals booked directly from select car rental companies
Sign up bonus of 175,000 points after $8,000 in spend within the first three months
Our Verdict
I’m actually not 100% sure that the free night benefit removal is legal in it’s current form as cardholders will have made purchases on the expectation that they have until the calendar year to meet the spend requirement. I suspect only being able to get it through June 30, 2024 is only for new cardholders that apply now and that hasn’t been communicated properly.
Overall the changes are negative for people wanting to keep the card long term, I know some people met the $15,000 annual spend for the free night certificate. I guess if you’re a Hilton regular then the $240 split up in quarterly credits will offset the annual fee but other than that the card itself doesn’t really offer anything enticing. The sign up bonus isn’t an all time high either, we have seen 180,000 points or 130,000 points + a free night certificate.
Update 3/18/24: See this comment for links to these offers without the lifetime-language exclusion (note: this Aspire offer doesn’t have the free night cert)
The Offer
American Express is offering increased offers on the Hilton cards. Offers are as follows:
Hilton no annual fee: 100,000 points
Hilton Surpass: 155,000 points
Hilton Aspire: 175,000 points + free night certificate
Our Verdict
These are not all time highs:
Only one really worth considering is the Hilton Aspire and even then I’d only consider it if you have a short or medium term need for the points otherwise I think we will see better Hilton deals in the future. American Express made some major changes to this and the Surpass at the end of last year. We won’t add these offers to the best credit card bonus pages.

Workers at two Pasadena hotels went on strike Sunday, picketing for better wages and increased staffing, as preparations were underway for the Rose Parade on New Year’s Day.
Members of Unite Here Local 11, which represents a range of hotel workers including housekeepers and cooks, walked out at dawn Sunday and will continue to strike Monday at the Hilton Pasadena and the Hyatt Place Pasadena, said union spokesperson Maria Teresa Kamel.
As of Sunday morning, dozens of people were picketing outside the two hotels, chanting “Si se puede!” — “Yes we can” — and tents were set up for some protesters planning to camp overnight.
The union chose this weekend for the walkout because “it’s probably the biggest tourist event in Pasadena,” she said. Workers decided that “if they’re expected to work on such a busy weekend, they should be compensated with a fair contract.”
Unite Here is calling for an immediate $5-an-hour hike in wages and for a return to “pre-pandemic staffing levels,” which have not rebounded despite a resurgence in hotel business, Kamel said.
“We have a lot of workers doing the work of two or three people for the same wages as they were getting before,” she said. The union has also raised concerns about pensions.
The Hilton Pasadena is among several hotels involved in talks with the union that are operated by Aimbridge Hospitality, which said in a statement that it was “continuing conversations with the union and remain[s] focused on reaching an agreement that puts our associates and their best interests at the center.”
“While these conversations are ongoing, the hotel has processes in place to limit disruptions and ensure consistent service and exceptional guest experiences at all times,” Aimbridge said in its statement.
Hyatt Place Pasadena is owned and operated by private equity firm Ensemble. Hyatt and Ensemble did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment Sunday on the walkout and the union demands.
Joseph Co, general manager at Hyatt Place Pasadena, told the Pasadena Star-News that the hotel has been “actively engaged in talks with the union” and “continues to honor the expired union contract and its union employees as it seeks to reach a new agreement.”
A representative for the Hotel Assn. of Los Angeles declined to comment.
Housekeeper Andrea Zepeda, who has worked more than a year and a half at Hyatt Place Pasadena, said she had struggled to make ends meet on roughly $18 an hour. She cares for two of her grandchildren and pays $1,800 in rent for a one-bedroom apartment, she said.
“The money doesn’t go far enough,” she said in Spanish. “Everything is very expensive — food, bills — and the costs are going up.” Zepeda also said that skimpy staffing had piled on pressure at her job to clean as many as 15 rooms before the end of her shift without being offered overtime.
Pasadena hotels fill up each year for the Rose Parade, which began in 1890 as a promotional event by a local social club and has evolved into a beloved tradition. Hundreds of campers flock the day before to find curbside seating available on a first-come, first-served basis along the parade route. Those working on floats or participating in the parade look for breakfast spots in the wee hours of the morning on Jan. 1.
Although workers don’t plan to picket at the Rose Bowl itself, the proximity of the hotels means picket lines probably will be noticeable to parade attendees, union officials said. Dozens of other hotels have reached tentative agreements with Unite Here Local 11 since their contracts expired in July, but these two have not, Kamel said.
“Our beef isn’t with the Rose Bowl,” she said. But “private equity groups have been harder to negotiate with than other hotels.”
Times staff writer Suhauna Hussain contributed to this report.
You can currently receive a 30% transfer bonus when you transfer American Express Membership Rewards points to Hilton Honors points. Normally you can transfer 1,000 MR points and receive 2,000 Hilton Honors points, during this promotion you’ll receive 2,600 Hilton instead (1:2.6)
The Fine Print
Our Verdict
American Express points are even more valuable than Hilton points even at a 1:2.6 rate so I don’t think this is worth considering.
Hilton Honors, the loyalty program of Hilton Hotels & Resorts, offer many benefits for its members. One of the main perks is being able to stay at more than 6,000 hotel worldwide for free. You normally have two ways of achieving this goal; by accumulating Hilton Honors points, or by earning Free Night Rewards.
The Hilton Free Night Reward is a great benefit that you can earn through credit card cards or through different promotions. Considering the price of a hotel stay is usually a few hundred dollars at least, and possibly as much much as $2,000, a Free Night Reward can easily offset the annual fee of your Hilton credit card.
Here we’ll take a look at how these Free Night Rewards/Certificates work, and the best options to extract maximum value.
How To Earn Hilton Free Night Rewards
You can earn Hilton Free Night Rewards on three American Express Hilton Honors co-branded credit cards. This comes as an annual benefit just for holding a card, or by spending a certain amount in a calendar year. We also see Free Night Rewards as a welcome bonus or a limited time promotion.
Check out the three Hilton Honors credit cards that can earn you Free Night Rewards.
Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card
Earn a Free Night Reward when you open your account and every year after renewal. Cardholders also can earn an additional Free Night Reward by spending $60,000 in eligible purchases within a calendar year.
Earn a Free Night Reward after spending $15,000 within the first year and each calendar year thereafter. Cardholders also can earn an additional Free Night Reward by spending $60,000 in eligible purchases within a calendar year.
Your Hilton Free Night Reward can be redeemed for one standard accommodation, double occupancy, subject to availability at properties in the Hilton portfolio. But there are a few exclusions that you can find here. These are normally vacation clubs, all-inclusive properties and select few other hotels.
Until 2022, these Hilton free night certificates could only be used on weekends. However they are now valid any night of the week, making it much easier to redeem them.
After meeting the specific requirements to earn a Hilton Free Night Reward, you will receive an email in 8–14 weeks that will inform you that it has been deposited in your account. You also can see your available free night rewards and expiration dates on the Hilton Honors website and in the mobile app. These certificates are valid for 12 months from the date of issuance. Hilton Free Night Rewards cover the room rate, as well as taxes and fees for most bookings.
When it comes to booking a stay using a Free Night Reward, you need to call Hilton at 1-800-446-6677, or you can log into your account and book with a representative through the online chat. There’s no option to book a stay yourself using one of these certificates.
Finding Eligible Award Stays
Before calling Hilton, or opening the Hilton chat to use your Free Night Reward, you need to find an eligible stay.
In order to use your certificate, the property where you plan to stay must have standard award inventory available for your date(s). To check on availability, go to hilton.com, enter your search criteria, check the box to “Use Points”, and look “Standard Room Reward” in the results.
Here’s an example for stays later this month at Conrad New York Downtown:
Hilton makes it easy to identify eligible rooms. In this case, only the first room would be bookable with a certificate since it is a “Standard Room Reward”. The other rooms are “Premium Room Reward”.
Each hotel sets its own rules for what qualifies as a standard room, and they don’t always make sense.
Free Night Rewards Tips
You can use multiple Free Night Rewards in the same reservation. So you can book a two-night or three-night stay with two or three certificates.
You can combine points and certificates in the same reservation.
While it’s officially not possible, you can actually use certificates with Hilton’s fifth-night-free benefit.
You might be able to extend these certificates past the expiration date, but even if it works, it might just be a few extra days, or a week or two at most.
You can enjoy your elite status benefits on stays booked with Hilton certificates.
Now that you know how to earn these certificates, and how to go about booking a stay, it’s time to look at where to use them. In the example above for a stay at Conrad New York Downtown, you are getting a value of $391, since that would be the price of the stay booked in cash. However, you can book some of the best Hilton properties out there, if you find availability. And that could make a Hilton certificate worth even $2,000 or more.
The Hilton Honors program no longer publishes an award chart. But until a few years ago, top-tier properties would coset up to 95,000 points for standard awards. The award coset has gone up, but you can still use your certificate for a stay, even if that “Standard Room Reward” is priced 150,000 points per night.
Chasing maximum value is probably the best idea for everyone. I would suggest to just use the certificates where they make the most sense for you, even if you’re getting a value of $500 instead of a $1,000. But if you’re going for gold, then check out some of properties where you can extract the most value out of your Hilton Free Night Reward.
Best Properties to Use Free Night Rewards
Before we get to the list, it’s worth mentioning that the higher priced a property is, the harder it gets to find a “Standard Room Reward”. In some cases they are almost non-existent.
Here’s a list of 10 top-tier Hilton properties:
Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi
Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal (Mexico)
Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort (Hawaii)
Conrad Maldives Rangali Island
Mango House Seychelles, LXR Hotels & Resorts
Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills
Hilton Seychelles Labriz Resort & Spa
Conrad Bora Bora Nui (French Polynesia)
Conrad London St. James
Conrad New York Midtown
Guru’s Wrap-up
Hilton Free Night Rewards are easy to earn through American Express credit cards. You can earn them as a signup bonus, or just for holding a card.
They provide great value and can be used almost anywhere. They are even easier to use now that they apply to stays on any day of the week. I wish they could be used online to book, but that’s not possible yet. You still have to call or chat with a Hilton representative.
If maximized at some of the top Hilton properties, you can easily get a value of close to $1,000 or even $2,00 in some rare cases. With that said, I would probably put a value of about $400-$500 on these certificates.
Leave a comment and let me know about some of the best properties you have booked with a Hilton certificate, or just your thoughts in general.

Our Verdict
Basically an extra 5x points if you spend in exact increments of $3,000. This is in addition to the points you’d normally earn. Keep in mind you also get a free night certificate when you spend $15,000 in a calendar year as well and you can complete this offer for both 2023 and 2024.

The following benefits will be removed:
Priority pass membership (1/31/24)
$250 airline free credit (12/31/23)
$250 statement credit for Hilton resorts (12/31/23)
Our Verdict
American Express seems intent on increasing the annual fee across all cards and introducing statement credits that can be difficult to use. Frustrating for some to lose priority pass access as well. Surpass has offered 130,000 points + free night certificate in the past, bonus on the Aspire is the best we have seen (I think).
Overall I see these as negative changes as quarterly credits are very annoying to use. It should be possible to purchase a $50 Hilton gift card at reception and it trigger the credit (for the Surpass), but that still involves going into a hotel and hoping they actually sell the gift cards.
As some U.S. hotels hung on to practices they adopted during the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic — such as eliminating daily room cleanings — the number of hotel housekeepers fell by more than 102,000 last year from prepandemic levels, new data show.
The total number of hotel housekeeping jobs as of May 2022 was 364,990, a 22% decline from the total of 467,270 such positions during the same period in 2019, according to numbers released last week by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The travel points membership service is helping timeshare owners generate revenue from their unused points with its 100%, money-back guaranteed programs.
Press Release –
Aug 24, 2022
WILDWOOD, Mo., August 24, 2022 (Newswire.com)
– Elite Member Perks, a travel points management service, has begun helping timeshare owners discover new ways to profit from their unused points. The service, which specializes in helping clients get value out of their property ownership, is now helping timeshare owners with everything from mortgage management to maintenance fee payment plans, all without putting their lines of credit or financial situations at risk.
In the post-pandemic era, online booking is the preferred method of travel, and vacation rentals are higher than ever. Those who purchase timeshares in the hopes of saving money and increasing their return on investment are often frustrated when the points that correspond to their allotted vacation time go unused at the end of a yearly cycle.
With Elite Member Perks, clients can enter into a lasting relationship with an expert team that will manage their points for them so that they may enjoy their vacations to the fullest. The Elite Member Perks team works to convert unused timeshare points into money in the form of reimbursement checks. When resorts refuse to buy timeshares back and the resale market fails to provide any value, the Elite Member Perks team can leverage its network to help clients receive reimbursement paychecks every quarter.
After recognizing the need to assist timeshare owners who were unable to take advantage of their ownership, principal owner Kyle Brown and his team set out to help individuals who were losing out on compensation from their unused points.
“We like to use the phrase ‘have peace of mind without losing a dime,’ when engaging with new clients,” said Brown. “Many timeshare owners fail to realize just how much compensation they are losing due to this issue. We work to educate our clients while simultaneously putting plans into action to reduce their losses and increase their revenue, all without ever putting their lines of credit at risk.”
Elite Member Perks primarily operates in Florida and Missouri. With physical office locations in both states, both teams have experienced tremendous growth in recent months. Both offices manage outreach and client services, and the Missouri office also oversees all reservations, customer service, onboarding, and payment processes.
Having just removed all sign-up fees from its programs, Elite Member Perks is looking to work with hundreds of new timeshare owners in the coming months. To learn more about Elite Member Perks’ programs, please visit https://www.elitememberperks.com.
