    A Dallas-area football coach ordered his Rockwall-Heath High School players to perform hundreds of pushups in a conditioning class before several were hospitalized, according to reports.

    “As a parent we send our kids to school trusting that they will be cared for at the highest level. That has been the case until this unfortunate event,” the mother of one athlete told Fox 4.

    WFAA’s Matt Howerton shared a letter from the school district telling parents that head football coach John Harrell had been placed on administrative leave amid an investigation. HuffPost couldn’t immediately reach Harrell for comment.

    Several players required medical attention or hospitalization after the Jan. 6 training, the letter said. Parents were asked to monitor their children for sharp arm pain or dark urine.

    Brady Luff, a captain on the team, said he did not believe Harrell was punishing the players. He said plenty of water was available and players were free to leave the workout.

    The coach would “never make us do a workout that was gonna put any of us at risk,” Luff said in the interview below.

    KANKAKEE, Ill. (WLS) — A south suburban school district is investigating a teacher for using a racial slur against a student in an incident that was caught on video.

    The incident happened in a classroom at Kankakee High School. Students recorded the interaction, telling administrators the teacher used the slur during a minor conflict with Michael Nelson, who said he’s still in shock.

    “It made me feel like less than a Black man, a young Black man at that, from a small community that’s trying to do the most for that community,” Nelson said.

    The superintendent for Kankakee schools said they’re disappointed.

    “The teacher has been placed on paid leave pending a full investigation. As of the end of the day today, KHS administration have collected statements from the students, talked with the students in the classroom and reviewed several videos,” the district said in a statement.

    The principal will make a recommendation on disciplinary action after the investigation, the district said.

    “Recent national surveys of young people have shown alarming increases in the prevalence of certain mental health challenges— in 2019, one in three high school students and half of female students reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, an overall increase of 40% from 2009. We know that mental health is shaped by many factors …” reports U.S. Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy in Protecting Youth Mental Health: The U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory. Further, Dr. Murthy calls all of us to remodel systems to improve the daily functioning of teens: “Our obligation to act is not just medical—it’s moral.     Amory student Greyson Wardlow commented, “The biggest things that helped me with Jumpstart were learning time management and being able to look back over the videos.”

    “I learned the most using literature strategies and figuring out how to order sentences,” added Ada Colburn, another Amory student.

    These improvements are not possible without the diligence and support of the teachers tasked to help raise scores at Amory. “I was very impressed at how much the students enjoyed Jumpstart and how well it helped their scores,” said teacher Kammie Miller.

    The guidance and encouragement of the administration also play a huge role in raising scores. “We are very grateful to have had the opportunity to use Jumpstart in our English classes this year, and we are very excited that it helped our students to improve their ACT® scores and their confidence,” said Principal Leigh Stanford.

    Jumpstart Test Prep is an online review program based on over 50 years of work by Dot McClendon, a legendary educator and Mississippi’s 19-year STAR Teacher Hall of Fame inductee. “As a teacher at The Mississippi School of the Arts and several other schools during my career, I was able to help guide the preparation of students in person,” said McClendon. “Now through our online, on-demand video review, students in Amory classrooms, as well as classrooms around the country, around the breakfast table, or on the couch at home, are able to benefit from our approach.”

    Higher education is more important to financial stability now more than ever as the bachelor’s degree (BA) now accounts for 56 percent of all good jobs, according to the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce. However, students from underserved communities are not being afforded the same college preparation opportunities as their affluent peers as they face systemic barriers to college readiness, including lack of institutional support and adequate resources. 

    First Gen Support (FGS), a student-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit funded through a grant by Cornell University, is dedicated to empowering first-generation, low-income, and immigrant (FGLI) students to successfully navigate high school and achieve college readiness. Set to launch its first annual College Prep-A-Thon Aug. 2-6, 2022, FGS has made this prep-a-thon unique in its interactive experience by combining elements of past FGS mentorship programs and last year’s college fair. Students will have the chance to learn from speakers and mentors from college prep programs and top universities such as UPenn, Stanford, Harvard, and Cornell. The FGS College Prep-A-Thon seeks to foster a supportive and competitive environment filled with incentives to ensure students finish daily challenges for college readiness.     Featuring 30+ college mentors, 10+ speakers, and 400+ signups, FGS is looking for 1,000+ student signups, 50+ college students as mentors, and donors/sponsors to sponsor prizes and the future operations of FGS. 

    As a first-generation immigrant, FGS founder Julia Sun (Cornell ’25) found that college preparation opportunities were not built equal, especially for lower-income and first-generation students. Inspired by the Black Lives Matters movement, she witnessed the socio-economic inequities and realized the staggering challenges that encompass finding college preparation resources, especially for students whose parents did not go to college.     This year brings new beginnings and exciting opportunities for nearly 200 students who have earned their Chicago Public Schools high school diploma through Ombudsman Chicago.     INTERalliance announces TechOlympics 2022: BYTE Back is back! The region’s premier high school technology conference, usually held as a two-day event in late February, will now consist of a virtual event from February 19th and 20th and the inaugural TechOlympics Hackathon on Feb. 25 – 27.

    TechOlympics 2022: BYTE BACK consists of a two-day conference and a three-day hackathon that offer high schoolers, regardless of experience, the opportunity to explore the technology industry. TechOlympics includes a wide range of workshops, competitions, speakers, keynotes, and breakouts presented by industry experts and educators. In addition to these sessions, students are given invaluable opportunities to network with and learn directly from local professionals from over 30 companies such as GE, P&G, and Anthem and educators from universities like UC, NKU, and Xavier. TechOlympics offers the opportunity to connect with over 300 driven, passionate students from all over the region.     Today,  Effective School Solutions (ESS), a leading provider of embedded whole school mental health services, and the Madison Holleran Foundation announced the 3rd Annual Madison Holleran Mental Health Action Scholarship. Madison Holleran was a 2013 graduate of Northern Highlands Regional High School in Allendale, NJ, where she excelled in academics as well as being a stellar athlete. She went on to attend the University of Pennsylvania and was a member of the track team. Tragically, Madison took her own life during the spring semester of her freshman year. ESS and the Madison Holleran Foundation have named this scholarship in Madison’s memory to not only drive awareness about suicide prevention, but also to hear from high school students about innovative approaches they believe their schools can take to help young adults navigate through the mental health challenges they are facing. 

    The COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted student mental health, but it also reduced the stigma of discussing mental health and highlighted the importance of mental health programs. Now is the time for action. Therefore, this year, scholarships will be awarded to four high school seniors who implemented a mental health program in their school. The four finalists will be awarded a $2,000 scholarship. To be considered for the scholarship, students must submit an application and a 1,500-word essay describing their program. Applications and essays (in PDF format only) can be submitted to madisonholleranscholarship@effectiveschoolsolutions.com. Scholarship awards will be made based on program innovation and the opportunity for their program to be expanded to schools across the country.     “We’re proud to announce this scholarship, which reflects the importance of providing mental health supports to our youth,” said Duncan Young, CEO of Effective School Solutions. “We’re hoping that the competition for these scholarships will be an opportunity to amplify the voices of ideas of young people when it comes to mental health support.” The contest will run from Jan. 10, 2022, through April 1, 2022. The award winner will be announced no later than May 16, 2022.

    US High School Choirs Invited to Participate in First of its Kind Competition – to be Judged by Some of America’s Top Choral Conductors

America’s Got ChoirsTM is a virtual forum to showcase the vast choral talent in the United States.     The Judges

    • Dr. Charlene Archibeque, one of America’s foremost choral conductors and teachers, is the first woman to earn the DMA in Choral Conducting in 1969 from the University of Colorado. Her over six decades in choral conducting is replete with International and domestic recognitions and accolades. She spent 35 years as Director of Choral Activities at San Jose State University.
    • Dr. Jeffrey Benson, Director of Choral Activities at San José State University. He is a published composer and arranger with Colla Voce Music and Santa Barbara Music Publishing, under the Charlene Archibeque Choral Series. He has served as cover conductor for the Grammy award-winning Washington Chorus. Choirs under his direction have performed with the Rolling Stones, Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli, and Sarah Brightman.
    • Dr. Edith Copley, Regents’ Professor Emeritus and Director of Choral Studies at Northern Arizona University. She is a recipient of the NAU School of Music Centennial Teacher of the Year Award, Arizona Music Educator of the Year, Arizona ACDA Outstanding Choral Director Award, and others. She has served the American Choral Directors Association in various leadership roles over the last 30 years and is currently National President-Elect.
    • Dr. Derrick Fox, Director of Choral Activities and Distinguished Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. He serves on the National ACDA Diversity Subcommittee, the Missouri Music Educators Association Diversity Council and is the Collegiate Coordinator for Student Activities for Nebraska Choral Directors Association. He has written articles for many organizations and was a contributing author in the Hal Leonard/McGraw Hill choral textbook Voices in Concert.
    • Dr. Jeffery Redding, Director of Choral Activities at the University of Central Florida (UCF). He is the 2019 GRAMMY Music Educator Award Recipient. He has led his choirs in performances at national, regional, and state conventions of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). He has been featured as guest conductor at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Kennedy Center, and Orchestra Hall on numerous occasions. He is also one of the conductors for Walt Disney World’s Candlelight Processional at Epcot.
