  • From soccer fields to fiddle strings, Bear Creek senior Jesse Quintana masters both

    [ad_1]

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — At first glance, Jesse Quintana looks like any other Bear Creek High School senior juggling school and soccer. But off the field, he’s striking a different kind of chord as one of the top young fiddle players in the country.

“I was two years old when I got my first fiddle,” Quintana told Denver7 Sports. “My mom and dad just got me a small fiddle for Christmas, and I was into it right away. I would play that thing for eight hours a day, just nonstop.”

His love for music started even earlier, thanks to family traditions and Colorado’s bluegrass culture.

“My grandma played the violin, which is more classical-based, but at the White Fence Farm, there was a lot of bluegrass jams that I would go to,” he said. “My parents would bring me there, even when I was in the womb. My mom said whenever we’d go to a jam, I’d just be kicking a bunch.”

When he was just 4 years old, Quintana stepped on stage with his fiddle for the first time at the National Western Stock Show, where he still returns to compete every January.

“Oh, it’s so fun. It brings in people from all over the United States, and we get to fiddle together,” he said. “I fell in love with it; it’s an adrenaline rush for sure.”

Since then, Quintana has competed and won at both state and national levels. On the soccer field, he brings the same passion and discipline, but his coach, Brent Carpenter, said his humility stands out most.

“Jesse is such a humble kid,” Carsaid. “You would really never know what champion he is — I mean, he’s a good soccer player, but you would have never known that he had this other skill that so few humans possess. I mean, he’s top 1% of all fiddle players.”

After high school, Quintana plans to study engineering, but he doesn’t plan to leave the fiddle behind.

“I definitely want to keep it up on the side and keep going to competitions and start teaching if I get a chance,” he said.

Balancing two passions that couldn’t be more different, Quintana proves that young athletes don’t have to choose just one path.

  • Flag football offers female athletes another outlet for sports, and scholarships

    [ad_1]

Very few female athletes could have seen this coming when they entered high school in 2022.

    Flag football scholarships? Really?

It would have been almost impossible for athletes in Illinois to think about back then because schools were not offering the sport on a varsity level. But two years ago, it was a club sport sponsored in part by the Chicago Bears.

Last year, the Illinois High School Association sanctioned flag football and Fremd High School in Palatine became the sport’s first state champion. This year, 216 teams have entered the postseason, which starts Oct. 6.

Colleges have taken notice and Triton College in River Grove is one of the first in the Chicago area that will offer scholarships for flag football starting in 2026.

“This is exciting news for Triton Athletics,” Garrick Abezetian, associate vice president of Triton College Athletics said in a news release. “Flag football has seen immense popularity recently, and this is an opportunity for us to contribute to that movement and offer more for Triton students and our community. I can’t wait to see everyone out on the field.”

According to womenscollegeflagfootball.com, there are 29 members of the National Junior College Athletic Association  that have either announced teams or have active varsity squads. Triton joins the College of DuPage as community college teams planning on starting up programs in the Chicago area for the 2026 season.

The website said there are hundreds of college club teams.

There are also only two NCAA Division I varsity teams with three on the way, and 14 Division II teams with 10 more coming. There are 21 Division III schools with 24 coming including Aurora and North Park. There are 32 NAIA teams with 12 more announced.

Oak Park River and Forest High School senior Elianna Brucato already has locked in Illinois Wesleyan in Bloomington as her college choice for academics and flag football, but she is happy a school close to home is offering opportunities.

“I think it would be great if the colleges around us would have teams,” Brucato said after a recent game against St. Laurence in Burbank. “It would be cool to see the sport grow even more.”

St. Laurence’s Sara Burzycki is weighing her options and seeing what’s out there.

“I’ve been doing a little bit of research,” she said. “There are not a lot of colleges that offer scholarships for flag football but there are a lot who offer it as a club team.

“Expanding flag football in colleges is a good thing. It’s a really good sport.”

OPRF’s Tabia Allen, who is also considering Illinois Wesleyan, said she is glad Triton is offering flag football and hopes that the many small colleges in the area follow suit.

“Any schools like Triton or Concordia who would offer flag football would be amazing regardless of what level it is,” she said.

St. Laurence senior Ciyah Thomas, who has played basketball at Bolingbrook and Hammond Central high schools, is looking at colleges for both basketball and flag football.

“My mind is still open. I’m definitely looking to play both sports in college because I have a passion for it,” she said. “I’ve played football my whole life. I never thought about getting a scholarship for it.”

St. Laurence coach Steve Vodicka said that last year two Vikings players committed to Graceland University and thinks there will be more college interest to come.

“The Graceland coach came out to meet the players and showed the opportunity they had for them,” Vodicka said. “Two of them ran with it and I feel a lot more are going to continue to see what that opportunity is like, especially when it comes to scholarships and getting financial aid.

“I can see that growing, especially in the state of Illinois and Chicago area.”

Triton is getting some financial support for its new venture, including a $5,000 grant from the NJCAA Foundation, NFL FLAG, and Reigning Champs Experiences.

“The decision supports strategic enrollment and athletic program growth for our institution,” Triton President Mary-Rita Moore said in a news release. “Equally important is that this investment supports our community’s passion for Trojan athletics and the growing interest nationwide in flag football as an emerging sport for women. This is how a public community college can make a positive difference in the lives of our students.”

  • New security measures at high school sporting events in Prince George’s County after fights, robbery – WTOP News

    [ad_1]

A high school football game marred by fights and a robbery in the parking lot last weekend has led Prince George’s County Public Schools to institute new security protocols for football games.

A high school football game marred by fights and a robbery in the parking lot last weekend has led Prince George’s County Public Schools to institute new security protocols for football games.

Interim Superintendent Shawn Joseph said extra police officers and sheriff’s deputies will be on hand outside the events, where they tend to experience the most problems.

“We typically don’t have issues inside the game,” Joseph said. “Inside the game, you’ve got students that we know, and we have the administrators, and we have our security teams in there monitoring, and it’s rare that there’s an issue in the game. When there are issues, it’s typically outside, in the dark.”

Spectators will also be required to purchase tickets in advance, and anyone who hasn’t already bought a ticket won’t be allowed inside. Only students of the two schools competing will be allowed in the events, and they’ll need to have a student ID that proves they go there.

The same protocols will be applied to high school basketball games once the season starts.

It comes after two high profile incidents that occurred at nighttime events at Wise High School in recent months, both of which, according to Joseph, involved students from other schools causing trouble.

“That’s what makes it hard, when you don’t know the kids coming to your games,” Joseph said. “It wasn’t their kids or their community.”

Less than two weeks ago, D.C. Public Schools made a similar decision to enhance security at football games, citing “multiple instances of spectator conflict.”

Joseph said it’s really a national issue.

“We’ve got a parenting crisis where parents aren’t putting their expectations on their kids as properly as we would like or hope,” Joseph said. “So kids are coming in and they’re acting like no one has taught them issues of civility, and how to be a good citizen.”

  • Longtime Florida high school basketball coach reacts to game relocating

    [ad_1]

BARTOW, Fla. — The biggest game in high school basketball is leaving Polk County, and while there’s no doubt it will be a hit to the local economy, it’s also a hit to local basketball teams.

Polk County has not only been home to the Florida High School Athletic Association State Championships, several teams from the county have won the big game. So, seeing this announcement isn’t the news many wanted to hear.

State champions are made on the court of Bartow High School. Just ask their coach, Terrence McGriff.

“We’re the only school in the history of Polk County who won back-to-back,” McGriff said.

The Bartow High School Yellow Jackets won back-to-back titles at the Florida High School Athletic Association Basketball State Championships in their backyard at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland.

“Our goal has always been to get to the ‘white house’ — that’s what we call the RP Funding Center,” McGriff said.

Now they have a new goal to shoot for after learning the FHSAA Basketball State Championship is moving to Jacksonville.

“For high school basketball, Polk County is the epicenter and been the epicenter of the state for about 50 years,” McGriff said. “I think they took it to Tallahassee for four or five years in the 70’s but for 45 of the 50 years, it’s been here.”

McGriff said he was disappointed, but not surprised, to learn FHSAA announced their move to the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.

“It wasn’t shocking to me. I serve on the committee, the state championship committee for Polk County. There had been some grumblings about them taking it for a couple of years just for greener pastures. Everything is about this right,” he said, making a money gesture.

“And maybe it had been here, and they thought it was a little stale.”

He said it’s a hard hit to the local economy — something hotels, restaurants and retail will definitely feel. But for teams like the Bartow Yellow Jackets, it just means traveling, and their fans will have a longer drive to watch them play for another championship.

But McGriff said he hopes the change will only be temporary.

“They’ll be back because of what Polk County has to offer,” McGriff said. “The people of the community do a lot of the work for it, the set-up, going to get the sponsorships so Jacksonville did a great job to get the sponsorships. So, congratulations Jacksonville, they came with a nice paycheck but we’re consistent here.”

The 2026 FHSAA Basketball State Championships are scheduled for Feb. 24-27 at the University of North Florida arena in Jacksonville.

  • FHSAA basketball state championships moving from Lakeland to Jacksonville

    [ad_1]

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — After decades of the games being played in Lakeland, the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) announced Wednesday that state basketball championship games will be held in Jacksonville starting in 2026.

The title games will be held at CSI Companies Court at the University of North Florida (UNF) Arena.

In a news release, FHSAA said, “The UNF Arena provides a modern, fan-friendly venue that will showcase Florida’s top basketball talent on a championship caliber stage.”

“We’re thrilled to begin this new chapter for our basketball state championships at the University of North Florida,” FHSAA Executive Director Craig Damon said. “The UNF Arena is a first-class facility, and Jacksonville offers an exciting opportunity to expand the reach and impact of this event.”

The boys and girls championship games had been played in Lakeland since the mid 1990s after a short stint in Tallahassee.

The UNF arena seats more than 5,100 fans and has hosted a variety of NCAA events, concerts and community programs.

The 2026 FHSAA Basketball State Championships are scheduled for Feb. 24-27 (Rural) and March 5-14 (Classes 1A-7A).

  • Week 3 HS football preview: Tyngsboro seniors motivated to keep winning

    [ad_1]

Over the last few years, Tyngsboro High’s senior football players have gone through their shares of ups and downs.

Last week was an up, a solid 24-13 win over Oxford.

This Friday at home (7 p.m.), the seniors want to continue that up trend against Mid-Wach E opponent Ayer Shirley.

“When the seniors played at the youth level, they did not win many games and were trying to learn how to win,” said THS head coach Rob Beaudette. “In eighth grade, they played a mostly JV schedule and learned how to be physical and over the last three seasons most of them have been on the field contributing to consecutive playoff berths.”

Now with the emergence of some talented underclassmen, the senior group led by captains TJ Bradford, Nico Fareta, Cole Latour and Jaden Merwin, as well as fellow seniors Nick Palumbo, Jacob Dorant, Shamus Mulligan, Jeremy Sanzo, Adrian Otieno and Dawson Vosburg, need to have big games if the Tigers want to go 2-0.

“We have veteran players on both sides of the ball that have been starting for two or three years,” said Beaudette. “These players are going to be expected to rely on their experience but also improve off of the last game individually in order to ensure a winning outcome.”

Ayer Shirley, which defeated Littleton, 22-8 last week, is led by a strong trio of running backs in Manny Gabino (139 yards, 1 TD), Dylan Bergen (68 yards, TD) and Anthony Carpentier (46 yards, TD).

“Ayer Shirley is a well-coached team that has a ton of pride and tradition in their program,” said Beaudette. “They are low on numbers, but what they lack in numbers, they make up for in effort and team chemistry. Their offensive versatility can present problems for defenses and with having a mobile quarterback can create a numbers game that can be advantageous to them. They have a tough group of linemen that are physical and have speed on the perimeter.”

The Panthers are also strong on defense led by defensive end Mathias Pallaird and linebacker Jake Pitsios, who is coming off a 10-tackle season-opening performance.

“As a squad we have faced adversity with some injuries to an already short roster,” said Ayer Shirley head coach Billy Naylor. “For us to have a chance to win vs. Tyngsboro we must eat the clock and get first downs. Defensively, we must tackle and not give up any big plays.”

    Lucky 13

Area teams will be involved in 13 other matchups over the next three days.

On Thursday, Lowell Catholic (0-1) will attempt to pull off an upset at Whittier Tech (1-0).

On Friday, Nashoba Tech (2-0) will take on Stoneham (2-0), led by former Wilmington High coach Bob Almeida, who last week won his 100th game with the Spartans after accomplishing the feat with the Wildcats.

Tewksbury (1-0) will take on a strong Methuen team (2-0), which will be playing without QB Josh Danella, who is out for the season with a broken collarbone. Redmen QB Will Harrison had a very impressive varsity debut two weeks ago in a win over Winthrop.

Other potential gems are Chelmsford (0-1) at Andover (1-0), Westford Academy (0-1) at Billerica (0-1)

Rounding out the action: Wilmington (1-0) at Saugus (0-1); Greater Lowell at Fitchburg (0-1); Blackstone (0-1) at Groton-Dunstable (1-1); Winthrop (0-2) at Shawsheen Tech (2-0); Windham (0-2) at Alvirne (0-2); Hanover (1-1) at Pelham (2-0); and Littleton (0-1) at St. Paul (1-0).

On Saturday, Lowell (1-0) will host New Bedford (0-1).

    In case you missed it

Wilmington defeated Essex Tech behind senior captain/linebacker Timmy Watson, who had two sacks and a huge tackle on a fourth down stop. The offensive line of Noah Matton, Adam Veliz, Josue Rivera, Watson, Gabe Borges, Nelvin Panackeel and Pat DeLucia all played extremely well, opening holes for Gus Lambert, Julian Martins and Ayden Bellevy, who combined for 172 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

“The guys on the offensive line have worked extremely hard during the preseason and have gotten better as a unit each week. They have embraced a blue-collar mentality and should continue to improve as the season moves along,” said first-year head coach Joe Cavanaugh.

Nashoba Tech sophomore running back Zack Deschenes continues to dazzle. In two games, he has 18 carries for 318 yards and five rushing touchdowns. He also has a pair of interception returns for TDs and an 80-yard kickoff return TD. He certainly will be tested this week against Stoneham and next week when the Vikings face Catholic Memorial.

Elsewhere, Shawsheen Tech’s James Banda had another big game with 85 rushing yards and three TD’ in a win over Lynnfield. Pelham’s Ben Maslanek finished with 98 rushing yards and three scores, while teammate Luke Draper had 85 rushing yards, a touchdown, a 17-yard reception, a two-point conversion and six tackles in the team’s 47-0 thumping over Hanover.

    The Sun’s Top 5

    1. Shawsheen Tech: Still the defending champs and still undefeated.

    2. Pelham: Still the defending New Hampshire state finalists and still undefeated.

    3. Tewksbury: Have huge test this week with the Methuen Rangers. Huge.

    4. Nashoba Tech: Did we say huge test? Vikings take on perennial state power Stoneham.

    5. Lowell: Big win over Westford – this team is knocking on the MVC door.

  • Daily News football: Week 4 preview and predictions, Thursday’s games

    [ad_1]

Sierra Canyon (4-0) vs. Orange Lutheran (3-1), at Orange Coast College

This game will impact top-tier high school football in the CIF Southern Section. After Mater Dei’s loss on Friday to Corona Centennial (43-36), the defeat has subsequently permeated through the other top flight programs in the Southland — one of those teams being Sierra Canyon.

Here’s why: In just a few short weeks of this 2025 season, it appears that the gap between Mater Dei/St. John Bosco and everyone else is nothing like it used to be. Thursday’s tilt is between two programs that have been hovering just one small cut below Mater Dei and Bosco for the last three seasons.

If the Trailblazers, who’ve outscored their first four opponents 192-7, including three shutouts, roll over the Lancers by three touchdowns or more, it could solidify Sierra Canyon as the ultimate contender for the Division 1 title.

Oddly enough, if the game is close, or Orange Lutheran wins, it won’t really crown the Lancers as a top contender … it will just take the early luster out of the notion that Sierra Canyon could be the proverbial messiah that saves Southern Section Division 1 football, and maybe see someone else win it for a change.

    Tarek’s pick: Sierra Canyon.

    Westlake (4-0) at Venice (2-2)

This game isn’t necessarily a headliner, but for a Thursday night game, it’s worth taking a look. The Warriors, under new head coach Rick Clausen, are rolling with elite athletes like RB Demanie Bell, WR Charles Davis and freshman QB Ford Green.

Look for the Warriors to finish with two losses (at the most) this season. The biggest games on their league schedule will be Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park.

Tarek’s pick: Westlake in a rout.

    Arleta (1-2) at Grant (0-3)

This is an East Valley League opener between two longtime City Section schools in the San Fernando Valley. No, the football isn’t what it used to be, but the tradition is still strong.

Arleta uses a two-running back system with senior tandem Jose Rosas and Austin Ramos, who’ve tallied just under 500 yards rushing and seven touchdowns this season.

Grant likes to run the ball, too. Carson Rinka will be the guy the Lancers lean on in a game that could end in an hour with the way the two teams like to run.

    Tarek’s pick: Arleta
