  • Saturday’s high school roundup: Tewksbury girls soccer team nets another win

    [ad_1]

Long way to travel. Sloppy field.

It didn’t matter – the Tewksbury High girls soccer team remained on a mission Saturday during a 2-0 victory at Martha’s Vineyard during a Div. 3 round of 16 game.

For No. 25 Tewksbury (11-5-5), the goals scored by Lyla Chapman and Sophia Nazzaro, assists from Samantha Ryan and Cordelia Zwirek, to oust No. 24 Martha’s Vineyard (15-5-1).

It was a true team victory. The Redmen got off to a slow start, but built momentum in the second half. Both goals were scored within the first 10 minutes of the second half. Nazzaro scored off of a crossed ball from Zwirek and Chapman scored soon after from 20 yards out.

The defensive line of Sophie Brewster, Sarah Marano, Vera Garabedian and Lila Chambers was outstanding.

Natick 2, Westford 1: An outstanding fall for 20th-seeded Westford Academy came to a painful end when fourth-seeded Natick scored in overtime during a Div. 1 round of 16 game in Natick.

Westford caps a 10-6-2 campaign. The Ghosts defeated Brookline in penalty kicks to advance to face Natick.

Northbridge 1, Tyngsboro 0: Tyngsboro’s memorable season came to a tough close with a narrow loss in a Div. 4 round of 16 battle.

The ninth-seeded Tigers (10-4-6) weren’t able to send a shot past Northbridge goalkeeper J.P. Bolduc, who notched his second straight shutout.

    Football

Pelham 7, West 6: It wasn’t easy and the Pythons had to play great defense all afternoon, but Pelham hung on for a tough NHIAA Div. 2 quarterfinal victory.

One touchdown and extra point kick was enough as No. 4 Pelham (8-2) edged No. 5 Manchester West (7-3) before a large home crowd.

Pelham, which has been banged up with injuries, entered the game having lost two of three game since hammering Manchester West, 35-0, in the regular season.

The Pythons advance and will play at top-seeded Souhegan on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 1 p.m.

Billerica 20, Beverly 0: Marc Luther led an inspired defensive effort as the Indians posted a home shutout during a Div. 2 round of 16 game Friday.

Luther finished with 10 tackles, while Luke McKenna had 2.5 tackles for loss for No. 6 Billerica (6-3), which didn’t let No. 11 Beverly (5-4) get its offense untracked. Offensively, the Indians were led by Erik Knight, who rushed for 106 yards on 17 carries.

Billerica advances to face third-seeded Bridgewater-Raynham.

OR 47, Wilmington 39: Old Rochester’s Connor Nelson scored the winning touchdown in the third overtime on a 1-yard run, followed by a successful two-point conversion, to hand the Wildcats a painful Div. 6 round of 16 loss Friday.

No. 4 Wilmington (6-3) was ousted despite a superb performance from quarterback Mark Holleran. He tossed two touchdowns passes and ran for two scores. Julian Martins broke loose for a 35-yard TD run.

Holleran tossed a 15-yard TD to Pasquale Delucia and in overtime a 10-yard strike to Delucia. He also sprinted in from 10 yards out in OT. Two failed two-point conversion attempts hurt Wilmington.

    Non-playoffs

Algonquin 41, G-D 13: Liam Richard was 16-for-22 through the air for 153 yards and a TD, but Groton-Dunstable fell to visiting Algonquin Regional on Friday.

Finn Gallagher (1-for-1) tossed a nine-yard TD pass to Carter Maple in the second quarter. In the third quarter, Richard lofted a 21-yard strike to Gallagher.

G-D spread the ball to receivers Gallagher (4-41), Korbin Larsen (4-40), Jayce Szatkowski (1-32) and Jack Burrows (4-30). The Crusaders struggled to run the ball effectively.

Monty Tech 41, Littleton 16: Austin Hegarty scored on a 95-yard pass from Justin Kasey in the first quarter, but it wasn’t enough for the Tigers (2-7) against the Fitchburg school Friday.

Keniat Velez scored on a 2-yard TD run in the fourth. Evan Fitzgerald and Cole Macadie each converted two-point attempts. Damien Sor and Cole Makie played well in the defensive backfield, with Sor grabbing an interception.

  • Week 3 HS football preview: Tyngsboro seniors motivated to keep winning

    [ad_1]

Over the last few years, Tyngsboro High’s senior football players have gone through their shares of ups and downs.

Last week was an up, a solid 24-13 win over Oxford.

This Friday at home (7 p.m.), the seniors want to continue that up trend against Mid-Wach E opponent Ayer Shirley.

“When the seniors played at the youth level, they did not win many games and were trying to learn how to win,” said THS head coach Rob Beaudette. “In eighth grade, they played a mostly JV schedule and learned how to be physical and over the last three seasons most of them have been on the field contributing to consecutive playoff berths.”

Now with the emergence of some talented underclassmen, the senior group led by captains TJ Bradford, Nico Fareta, Cole Latour and Jaden Merwin, as well as fellow seniors Nick Palumbo, Jacob Dorant, Shamus Mulligan, Jeremy Sanzo, Adrian Otieno and Dawson Vosburg, need to have big games if the Tigers want to go 2-0.

“We have veteran players on both sides of the ball that have been starting for two or three years,” said Beaudette. “These players are going to be expected to rely on their experience but also improve off of the last game individually in order to ensure a winning outcome.”

Ayer Shirley, which defeated Littleton, 22-8 last week, is led by a strong trio of running backs in Manny Gabino (139 yards, 1 TD), Dylan Bergen (68 yards, TD) and Anthony Carpentier (46 yards, TD).

Lowell’s Seth Ly completes a pass during Friday’s 24-14 victory over Westford Academy. Lowell can start 2-0 by defeating New Bedford on Saturday. (James Thomas for the Lowell Sun)

“Ayer Shirley is a well-coached team that has a ton of pride and tradition in their program,” said Beaudette. “They are low on numbers, but what they lack in numbers, they make up for in effort and team chemistry. Their offensive versatility can present problems for defenses and with having a mobile quarterback can create a numbers game that can be advantageous to them. They have a tough group of linemen that are physical and have speed on the perimeter.”

The Panthers are also strong on defense led by defensive end Mathias Pallaird and linebacker Jake Pitsios, who is coming off a 10-tackle season-opening performance.

“As a squad we have faced adversity with some injuries to an already short roster,” said Ayer Shirley head coach Billy Naylor. “For us to have a chance to win vs. Tyngsboro we must eat the clock and get first downs. Defensively, we must tackle and not give up any big plays.”

    Lucky 13

Area teams will be involved in 13 other matchups over the next three days.

On Thursday, Lowell Catholic (0-1) will attempt to pull off an upset at Whittier Tech (1-0).

On Friday, Nashoba Tech (2-0) will take on Stoneham (2-0), led by former Wilmington High coach Bob Almeida, who last week won his 100th game with the Spartans after accomplishing the feat with the Wildcats.

Tewksbury (1-0) will take on a strong Methuen team (2-0), which will be playing without QB Josh Danella, who is out for the season with a broken collarbone. Redmen QB Will Harrison had a very impressive varsity debut two weeks ago in a win over Winthrop.

Other potential gems are Chelmsford (0-1) at Andover (1-0), Westford Academy (0-1) at Billerica (0-1)

Rounding out the action: Wilmington (1-0) at Saugus (0-1); Greater Lowell at Fitchburg (0-1); Blackstone (0-1) at Groton-Dunstable (1-1); Winthrop (0-2) at Shawsheen Tech (2-0); Windham (0-2) at Alvirne (0-2); Hanover (1-1) at Pelham (2-0); and Littleton (0-1) at St. Paul (1-0).

On Saturday, Lowell (1-0) will host New Bedford (0-1).

    In case you missed it

Wilmington defeated Essex Tech behind senior captain/linebacker Timmy Watson, who had two sacks and a huge tackle on a fourth down stop. The offensive line of Noah Matton, Adam Veliz, Josue Rivera, Watson, Gabe Borges, Nelvin Panackeel and Pat DeLucia all played extremely well, opening holes for Gus Lambert, Julian Martins and Ayden Bellevy, who combined for 172 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

“The guys on the offensive line have worked extremely hard during the preseason and have gotten better as a unit each week. They have embraced a blue-collar mentality and should continue to improve as the season moves along,” said first-year head coach Joe Cavanaugh.

Nashoba Tech sophomore running back Zack Deschenes continues to dazzle. In two games, he has 18 carries for 318 yards and five rushing touchdowns. He also has a pair of interception returns for TDs and an 80-yard kickoff return TD. He certainly will be tested this week against Stoneham and next week when the Vikings face Catholic Memorial.

Elsewhere, Shawsheen Tech’s James Banda had another big game with 85 rushing yards and three TD’ in a win over Lynnfield. Pelham’s Ben Maslanek finished with 98 rushing yards and three scores, while teammate Luke Draper had 85 rushing yards, a touchdown, a 17-yard reception, a two-point conversion and six tackles in the team’s 47-0 thumping over Hanover.

    The Sun’s Top 5

    1. Shawsheen Tech: Still the defending champs and still undefeated.

    2. Pelham: Still the defending New Hampshire state finalists and still undefeated.

    3. Tewksbury: Have huge test this week with the Methuen Rangers. Huge.

    4. Nashoba Tech: Did we say huge test? Vikings take on perennial state power Stoneham.

    5. Lowell: Big win over Westford – this team is knocking on the MVC door.

Saturday’s local roundup: Kasey Richard honored after fabulous softball season at Boston University

    [ad_1]

Littleton native Kasey Richard played a major role in Boston University’s historic softball season.

The Terriers recently finished a 53-6-1 campaign to tie the 2002 UMass team which went 53-12 for most wins by a Division 1 program from the Northeast. BU fell 8-2 in the NCAA Tournament to Oklahoma in Norman, Okla.

Richard, a sophomore pitcher, earned CSEvalSoftball All-America First Team honors after a sensational season. She posted an NCAA-leading 16 shutouts, a 28-4 record, and struck out 265 batters in 211 innings. Richard’s earned run average was a miniscule 1.23.

    College baseball

Morash on fire: Westford native Matt Morash is making an impact on the Penn State program as a freshman.

The 6-foot, 200-pound left-handed pitcher was on the mound on Thursday when Penn State defeated Michigan, 9-5, in the Big Ten Tournament. Morash pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, striking out three and fanning a batter to end the game.

It was the first time since 2007 that Penn State has won two games in the Big Ten Tournament. Penn State was coming off an 8-4 win over top-seeded Illinois. On Saturday, the Nittany Lions were scheduled to play a semifinal round game in Omaha, Neb.

In his previous outing, Morash threw 1.1 scoreless innings against Maryland.

Morash, who guided Westford Academy to a sparkling 20-1 season last spring as a senior, is 2-0 at Penn State with a 7.39 earned run average. He’s made 17 appearances, striking out 23 in 28 innings.

    College hockey

Parks a champion: UMass Lowell incoming freshman Lee Parks helped guide Fargo to the United States Hockey League playoff championship.

Fargo also won the regular-season title and was a dominant team all season. In fact, Fargo, which went 50-10-2 during the regular season, set a USHL record for most wins in a season.

A 6-2, 219-pound native of Stittsville, Ont., Parks had two goals and two assists in 12 playoff games. In the regular season, he was a force in his first year in the USHL, netting 30 goals and 28 assists while playing in all 62 games.

Another UML commit, Nick Romeo, was a member of the Dubuque team which made the finals. Like Parks, Romeo is a forward.

    College track

Young 38th: Senior Joe Young (Dorchester) of the UMass Lowell men’s track and field team was the final River Hawk to compete at the NCAA East Preliminary on Friday evening, hosted by the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Ky.

    Baseball

Alvirne 5, Merrimack 4: The Broncos impressively ended their season with another NHIAA Div. 1 victory.

Dylan Page pitched the game of his career. His first start as a pitcher came on Senior Night. He only allowed three hits through four innings.

Senior Jayden Alvarez drilled a two-run single. Max Francisco scored on a wild pitch for the winning run.

Littleton 9, Ayer Shirley 5: Littleton secured a home game for the Round of 32 in the MIAA Tournament for the first time since 2018 with the Mid-Wach win.

Tewksbury 6, Methuen 0: The Redmen clinched a winning record behind the terrific pitching of Billy Burris, who tossed a complete-game shutout.

Burris allowed four hits and one walk while striking out seven. Kyle Cummings paced the offense by going 2-for-4 and scoring a pair of runs for Tewksbury (11-9), which will learn its state tournament draw Wednesday.

    Softball

Triton 14, Wilmington 9: The Wildcats scored plenty of runs, but couldn’t slow down a strong Triton Regional (15-4) team, especially Kyla Story, who launched two home runs.
