  • Colleyville Heritage edges Seguin in OT to strengthen playoff hopes

    [ad_1]

Colleyville Panther quarterback Bodey Weaver (2) gets ready to throw the ball during a UIL football game against Grapevine High School at Mustang Panther Stadium in Grapevine, Texas on Friday, Nov. 8, 2024.

Colleyville Panther quarterback Bodey Weaver (2) gets ready to throw the ball during a UIL football game against Grapevine High School at Mustang Panther Stadium in Grapevine, Texas on Friday, Nov. 8, 2024.

Quarterback Bodey Weaver threw a 16-yard TD pass to Connor Souphankhaisy, on fourth-and-one, in overtime and the defense swarmed Arlington Seguin’s two-point conversion attempt on its series, to propel Colleyville Heritage Panthers to a thrilling 42-41 victory Friday October 17th at Mustang-Panther Stadium.

Weaver, a UTEP commit, accounted for all six Colleyville Heritage touchdowns — five passing and one rushing — as the Panthers rallied from a 20-0 second-quarter deficit to claim a key 3-5A Division II victory over the Cougars.

Heritage forced overtime on a 40-yard Weaver TD strike to Souphankhaisy with 48 seconds left to deadlock the contest at 35-35. Seguin had the overtime option and chose to begin the extra time on defense.

Weaver’s TD pass to Souphankhaisy came on a free-play as the Seguin was offside on the fourth-and-one.

“The fourth down call was a design run for me,” said Weaver. “But when I saw the defense jump, I took advantage, and we connected on it.”

On Seguin’s overtime offensive possession, Smith — unstoppable all game — grabbed his fifth receiving TD, this one from 25 yards out. The Cougars chose to go for two, but the Panthers defense swarmed Johnaven Polk who was operating out of the wildcat that he had converted a similar two-point try in the third period, and held him short of the goal line.

“What a great game,” said Colleyville Heritage head coach Jerry Edwards. “Two teams battling to the end. I was hoping we would be able to start overtime on defense, but it all worked out for us. Just a great job of the guys battling back all game long.”

Arlington Seguin bolted to a 20-0 first-half lead thanks to a pair of touchdown passes from quarterback Chevy Andrews to G’manii Smith covering five and 81 yards and a one-yard TD run by K’darrius Trotter. A 63-yard fumble return by Seguin’s Keith Hoffmann to the Heritage two-yard line set up Trotter’s rushing six-pointer.

The Heritage offense finally got untracked late in the second quarter. Bodey Weaver marched the Panthers 85 yards in 10 plays culminating in a 27-yard TD pass to Lucas Sumwall with 2:34 left before halftime.

“We started out so slowly offensively,” said Weaver. “But we kept saying just get one touchdown. We got one, and then the defense got the big stop and the turnover on the punt and that really gave us confidence scoring the TD just before halftime.”

Utilizing its timeouts, the Heritage defense forced a three-and-out on the ensuing Seguin series. Seguin fumbled the punt snap giving Heritage another opportunity with 1:33 remaining till intermission.

After a holding penalty set the Panthers back another 10 yards, Weaver found Trevi Preische on a 14-yard scoring pass on third-and-five, with 16 ticks left. That narrowed the Heritage deficit to 20-14 at the break.

“That score just before halftime was huge for us,” said Edwards. “Gave us some momentum, and we were getting the ball to start the second half.”

That gave the Panthers confidence as they received the second-half kickoff. And Weaver marched the Panthers downfield in 10 plays covering 95 yards that resulted in a 43-yard TD pass to Souphankhaisy that gave Heritage a brief 21-20 lead.

Seguin responded on its next series, with the Andrews-to-Smith duo hooking up on a 17-yard TD. Johnaven Polk added a two-point conversion run that gave Seguin a 28-21 edge. A six-yard Weaver TD run, set up by a De’Marius Logan blocked punt giving the Panthers possession at the Cougars 12-yard line, on the first play of the final period evened the score.

Smith, who was unstoppable all game, hauled in a 20-yard TD from Andrews to stake Seguin to a seven-point lead at 35-28. The two teams traded possessions before Weaver drove the Panthers 61 yards in five plays, and spinning out of a potential-sack, found a wide-open Souphankhaisy to send the game to overtime.

“A play is never over with Bodey,” said Souphankhaisy. “I went to an open space, the safety moved up, I saw Bodey get out of a possible sack, and we were able to make it happen.”

Weaver finished with 274 passing yards, completing 20 of 33 passes without an interception, and adding a game-high 102 rushing yards on 21 attempts. Souphankhaisy totaled 122 receiving yards on seven catches, and the three TDs for the Panthers, No. 4 in the Star-Telegram’s current 5A area rankings.

Smith had a monster game for Seguin, with 11 receptions for 270 yards and five TDs. Andrews completed 17 of 20 passes for 315 yards without a pick. Heritage’s win has major playoff implications in 3-5A Division II, with Argyle and Mansfield Summit pretty much locked in for two playoff spots.

Mansfield Timberview, which already owns wins over Heritage and Seguin, appears secure as the third district representative. That leaves Heritage and Seguin competing for the final post-season slot. Now, Heritage controls its own destiny to reach the playoffs. Colleyville Heritage (4-3, 3-2) squares off against Mansfield Summit Friday Oct. 24th, and finishes the regular season with a home game versus Burleson and then at Grapevine.

“Big game for us next week against Summit,” said coach Edwards. “Gotta clean up a few things and get ready for another great team.” Arlington Seguin (5-3, 3-3) has a pair of district contests remaining — home against Everman on Thursday, Oct. 23rd, and the regular season finale at Mansfield Summit on Friday, Nov. 7th.

  • DuVal High becomes latest DC-area football team punished for using ineligible players – WTOP News

    [ad_1]

DuVal High School is facing punishment after an investigation determined the school’s football team used ineligible players, Prince George’s County Public Schools announced.

In the past year, several D.C.-area high school football teams have been slapped with postseason bans, coach suspensions or have been forced to forfeit games after investigations concluded they recruited ineligible players. On Thursday, DuVal High School in Lanham, Maryland, became the latest.

According to Prince George’s County Public Schools, the district was alerted on Oct. 9 to an eligibility concern with DuVal’s football team, and a formal investigation determined multiple ineligible players participated in varsity football games.

As a result, head coach Darian McKinney has been suspended for the remainder of the year.

DuVal also must forfeit all games in which ineligible players participated, though the school system did not specify how many games that is.

“Reasons for ineligibility include: insufficient academic standing, participation in both junior varsity and varsity contests within the same week, and a transfer student never listed on the eligibility team roster submitted to the Office of Interscholastic Athletics,” the school system said in the statement.

In a letter to its families, DuVal said coach Warren Gibbs will serve as interim head coach.

“We will maintain the same high expectations for safety, sportsmanship, and effort,” DuVal Principal Denice Nabinett wrote in the letter. “We know this news is disappointing and may feel unsettling. Please know we see and honor the hard work, dedication, and heart our players and families have poured into this season.”

DuVal’s punishment comes just two days after Prince George’s County Public Schools announced the same consequences for another of its schools, Charles H. Flowers High School.

Flowers’ head coach, Dameon Powell, was also suspended after an investigation found the Jaguars used an “ineligible freshman player” during varsity games. Flowers also must forfeit all games that player participated in.

Not long before that, Fairfax High School’s football team was banned from the playoffs after Fairfax County Public Schools determined the Northern Virginia school’s program violated recruiting policies.

Perhaps most notably, Hayfield Secondary School‘s recruiting scandal last year made headlines for weeks, as an appeals process dragged into the playoffs and ended in the team withdrawing from postseason play.

In its statement announcing DuVal’s punishment, Prince George’s County Public Schools said it’s now trying to get ahead of any potential future eligibility violations.

“PGCPS will convene a mandatory meeting and training session for all athletic directors, coaches and school principals to reinforce the district’s zero-tolerance stance on violations of athletic eligibility and participation policies,” the statement reads.

The school system is asking staff and students to “self-report” any eligibility concerns before violations can be discovered.

  • 5 Friday football storylines: Big games for Brewer, Birdville, Heights, Wyatt

    [ad_1]

Birdville receiver Triston Spain is tackled by Richland’s Tristan Brookins on Sept. 26 at Birdville ISD FineArts/Athletics Complex.

Birdville receiver Triston Spain is tackled by Richland’s Tristan Brookins on Sept. 26 at Birdville ISD FineArts/Athletics Complex.

    Special to the Star-Telegram

Week 8 of the Texas high school football season is here.

Here are the top Fort Worth-area Friday night storylines to keep an eye on:

Birdville, Brewer to clash for positioning

District 3-5A Division I is a very competitive group with Denton Ryan, Richland and Aledo all with the potential to make a state championship run.

That last playoff spot for the fourth-place team, however, is usually up for grabs. In 2024, the Azle Hornets rose to the occasion, grabbing the brass ring to secure a spot in the postseason.

This year, it appears two other teams are in the mix for that final spot: White Settlement Brewer (4-2, 2-2) and Birdville (4-3, 3-2).

Brewer and Birdville will clash at 7 p.m. Friday at Birdville FA/AC. The winner will receive a significant leg up in seizing the district’s final playoff spot.

Fort Worth Arlington Heights to face Wyatt

The District 4-5A Division I title race is the most competitive in the Fort Worth area.

Fort Worth Wyatt (5-1, 4-0) is the front-runner, but all of that can change in an instant. The Chaparrals will face Arlington Heights (6-1, 4-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Farrington Field; the talented Yellow Jackets are coming off a tough 50-47 loss to Saginaw.

If Arlington Heights manages to defeat Wyatt, multiple teams could be in the hunt for a district title, including Heights, Saginaw and Paschal. Chisholm Trail, despite two close losses to Arlington Heights and Wyatt, could still compete for a playoff spot.

A big game for Colleyville Heritage

Colleyville Heritage, which has made the postseason every year since 2005, has a lot on the line Friday.

If Heritage (3-3, 2-2 District 3-5A Division II) falls to Arlington Seguin (5-2, 3-2), it’ll have an uphill battle to make the playoffs. The Panthers are competing with Seguin and Timberview for the fourth playoff spot, and they already lost to the Wolves.

Heritage has been one of the more consistent Fort Worth-area programs since head coach Jerry Edwards was hired ahead of the 2023 season. The fact that the Panthers have to scratch and claw for a playoff spot says something about the toughness of the district.

Heritage will face Seguin at 7 p.m. Friday at Mustang-Panther Stadium.

    Keller takes on Euless Trinity

Although Keller (3-4, 2-3) lost to L.D. Bell in district play, its arguably one of the more competitive squads in District 4-6A.

Now, the Indians have a big opportunity to prove themselves against Euless Trinity (4-2, 2-2), a tough opponent, at 7 p.m. Friday at Pennington Field.

For Keller and Trinity, it’s an opportunity to seize an advantage in what should be a tight 4-6A playoff race. L.D. Bell, Keller Central and Haslet Eaton are all in contention for postseason spots, so every win from this point is crucial.

    A test for Arlington Bowie

Arlington Bowie, the defending District 8-6A champion, has one of its bigger tests of the season Friday.

The Volunteers (4-2, 3-0) will face Arlington (4-1, 2-1) at 7 p.m. Friday at Maverick Stadium. Bowie is undefeated in district play, while Arlington’s sole loss came to South Grand Prairie (5-0, 3-0), a squad that could challenge for the district title.

One key player to watch is Bowie’s Jayden Bibbs, who threw five touchdown passes against Arlington Martin in Week 7. Don’t count out the Colts, who have scored 28 or more in all of their games this season.

  • Player of the Week: Westfield’s Jason Lartey – WTOP News

    [ad_1]

This week’s Military Bowl Touchdown Club High School Football Player of the Week is Westfield High School linebacker Jason Lartey.

Jason Lartey began his Westfield High School football career as a wide receiver. Even after switching to the defensive side of the ball, eventually settling at linebacker, it took a little bit of time for the transition to take place.

But now, in his first full season as a starter, the promise that Lartey displayed is coming to fruition. This past Friday, the senior intercepted three passes, returning one for a touchdown, and made nine tackles, including a critical sack on a potential go-ahead two-point conversion late in the game, as Westfield escaped with a 17-16 win over Madison.

“We thought the best thing about him was his motor and how hard he plays,” Westfield coach Scott Vossler said. “We thought that pursuing the football, he would be great on defense. He just had to see himself as a defensive player. A lot of guys grow up and think of themselves as one thing for so long that it’s hard for them to see themselves as something else.”

For his efforts, Lartey was named the Military Bowl Touchdown Club High School Football Player of the Week.

Lartey moved to defensive back as a sophomore and played defensive end and outside linebacker last year, beginning to settle in and make more plays as the season went on. There were high expectations for him to be one of Westfield’s top players this season and he is trying to meet them.

“He has been an outstanding leader for us,” Vossler said. “He’s been one of our stalwarts on defense and came up big in one of our biggest games this week. We wouldn’t be where we are without him.”

This week’s D.C. Touchdown Club Honor Roll:

    ANNE ARUNDEL
South River QB Ben Raines completed 17 of 21 passes for 372 yards and seven touchdowns as the Seahawks beat Crofton, 56-16.

    HOWARD
Atholton QB Tyler Bell completed 16 of 22 passes for 261 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for another score as the Raiders beat Long Reach, 32-7.

  • Mansfield Summit’s rushing attack leads Jaguars past Timberview

    [ad_1]

Mansfield Summit takes the field against Grapevine during their game at Newsom Stadium on Thursday, Sep. 25 ,2025

Mansfield Summit takes the field against Grapevine during their game at Newsom Stadium on Thursday, Sep. 25 ,2025

    (Special to the Star-Telegram)

In a rivalry game between Mansfield Summit and Timberview, it was the Jaguars’ running attack that totaled more than 400 yards and made the difference.

Summit won the home game 39-29 against the Wolves, using its three-headed rushing attack to gain big yards on the ground all night.

Summit head coach Channon Hall was proud of how his team performed.

“I felt like we were ready for the moment,” Hall said. “Coach (Jacody) Coleman got those guys going over there. They’ve been having some big games, playing with a lot of energy, and turned that thing around. We knew it was going to be a test, with it being a rivalry game and all the things. Our guys were ready to answer the call. It wasn’t easy, but that’s all you can ask for in a game like this.”

Timberview entered the game with a 4-2 record, 3-1 in district play, and riding a three-game win streak after beating Colleyville Heritage, Everman and Arlington Seguin.

Summit was 4-1 overall and 3-0 in district play and had won four straight, defeating Mansfield, Burleson, Grapevine and The Colony heading into the game.

The first quarter saw both offenses score on their first two possessions. The Wolves’ Cedric Portley scored on a short run, but Jaguars quarterback Ian Gebhardt answered with a 54-yard touchdown run up the middle untouched on Summit’s first play.

Timberview marched down the field before Steven Hall found Trysten Shaw in the corner of the end zone to put the Wolves back in front. The Jaguars responded quickly, with Omagbolahan Daudu punching it in from short range. The touchdown was set up by a 41-yard run from Gebhardt the play before.

With the score tied at 14-14 after only five minutes of play, it looked like a shootout was brewing, but the defenses adjusted.

Timberview had to punt, and its defense struggled to slow down Summit’s three-headed rushing attack. The Wolves’ defense made a play, though, when Geraci Martin intercepted a deep pass.

At the start of the second quarter, Timberview attempted a 32-yard field goal. The kick was short, but the Wolves caught a break on a running-into-the-kicker penalty. Timberview decided to go for it on fourth-and-five but was stopped at the Jaguars’ 10-yard line.

Summit then drove down the field with its ground game and a few key passes, taking up 9:34, but the Wolves’ defense forced a turnover on downs at its own 17-yard line.

Both teams had one more possession in the final two minutes, but neither scored. Timberview’s Jarvis Smith intercepted a pass in the end zone on the final play to preserve the 14-14 tie heading into halftime.

The third quarter saw Summit take control of the game. Daudu broke loose for a 41-yard touchdown run. Later in the quarter, Gebhardt went down with a leg injury, and backup Demarcus Bird threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Domonique Young. Even with the Wolves’ Davin Hill intercepting a pass at the end of the quarter, the Jaguars led 26-16.

Summit kept up the strong play as its defense forced and recovered a fumble from Dallas Simmons. Bird hit Young on another long pass, this one going for 72 yards, setting up Adarion Nettles’ short touchdown run.

Timberview’s offense had struggled since the second quarter, with pressure leading to several sacks and off-target throws that stalled drives. The Wolves went back to basics, and thanks to a couple of big runs, had the ball in the red zone. Portley scored his second touchdown of the night on a short run.

Timberview had cut the lead to 32-22 but couldn’t stop the Jaguars’ rushing attack.

Gebhardt returned and iced the game with an electrifying 53-yard run, breaking several tackles as Summit pushed its lead to 39-22.

The Wolves didn’t give up and drove inside the Jaguars’ 20-yard line. Things almost got worse when an interception was returned 89 yards for a touchdown, but Timberview caught a break with a roughing-the-passer penalty.

Portley scored from the 1-yard line — his third touchdown on his third carry — cutting the lead to 39-29.

Summit’s ground game was able to run out the clock to secure the win.

The Jaguars’ three-headed rushing attack of Gebhardt, Nettles, and Daudu combined for 407 yards. Gebhardt led the team with 212 yards and two touchdowns, Nettles added 109 yards and one score, and Daudu finished with 86 yards and two touchdowns.

Bird finished with 142 passing yards and one touchdown, while Young caught four passes for 131 yards and a score.

The Jaguars improved their record to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in district, but will face one of their biggest tests of the season next week, traveling to play at reigning district champion Argyle’s field at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17.

For Timberview, Hall threw for 241 yards and one touchdown. His top receiver, Braylin Barnett, caught eight passes for 93 yards. Jacoby Easter led the team with 47 rushing yards, while Portley finished with three touchdowns on just three carries covering nine yards.

The Wolves fell to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in district play. Timberview is scheduled to host a 3-3 Burleson team at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17.

Trailing 10-0 in the first quarter to Mansfield Lake Ridge, North Crowley faced a deficit it isn’t accustomed to in District 3-6A play.

But just as quickly as the Panthers fell behind, they stormed back with a vengeance, scoring 62 Unanswered points en route to an 62-17 victory at Newsom Stadium on Thursday.

North Crowley head coach Ray Gates said he was disappointed in the slow start because he values starting games off strong.

“We found ourselves down,” Gates said. “But we never shake, and we never falter in those situations.”

After falling to Rockwall to close non-district play, which ended a 19-game win streak, North Crowley had to deal with a regular-season loss for the first time in Ray Gates’ tenure as head coach. Now, the Panthers are back on track as the only undefeated team in District 3-6A play.

“We’ve played worthy opponents, and we’ve been in a lot of nail biters,” Gates said. “ … You draw on that experience. You’ve been there before. You know you can do it, and you’ve got coaches that will make the necessary adjustments.”

Running back Kiante Ingram led the charge with 136 rushing yards and three touchdowns on nine attempts. Gates credited his versatility, saying the offense can thrive whether he gets 20 carries or five, considering his ability as a pass blocker.

“We love him and everything that he does,” Gates said.

Quarterback Hayes Cloutier commanded the offense, throwing for 133 yards and a TD while completing 5 of 9 passes. He also rushed for 42 yards and a TD.

“He is healthy now, and he’s still learning a lot,” Gates said. “We’re putting more on him, and I think he is responding the right way. He has a great attitude. He asks a lot of questions and he takes notes. He watches a lot of film. He is a football junkie, and he is getting comfortable around our guys.”

Lake Ridge seized a 10-0 lead with a 37-yard field goal and an 11-yard touchdown rush from quarterback Deshawn Edwards that was set up by a North Crowley turnover on downs deep in Panther territory.

To begin North Crowley’s scoring spree, Ingram found space for a 29-yard rushing score. RB G’yrell Smith followed it up with a 13-yard scoring scamper, and Ingram extended the lead to 21-10 with another TD — this time it was nine yards.

North Crowley’s offense got creative for its next score with Jayden Shaw lobbing it over the defense to Jeramie Cooper for a 26-yard score.

To end a 41-point first half, Ingram added his third TD, a 49-yard breakaway run, and WR Lorenzo Cruz caught a quick pass and flashed some speed on the way to an 85-yard touchdown.

The rout continued in the second half. Smith found paydirt again with a six-yard score, and Cloutier continued the scoring by keeping it himself and racing 20 yards for the TD. To finish the 62 point spree, Cam Russell added a touchdown before Lake Ridge added a inconsequential score.

Up next, North Crowley will hit the road to play Weatherford on Friday, Oct. 17 at Kangaroo Stadium. On that same day, Lake Ridge will look to bounce back against Crowley at Crowley ISD Stadium.

“We want to go 1-0 every day,” Cloutier said. “Practice — we want to attack it hard. We need to. We need to turn it up at practice a little bit more and then just show it out on Fridays. So, that’s the expectation.”

  • How Andrew Luck helped one Southeast Raleigh standout find his fit at Stanford

Southeast Raleigh High’s football players emerged from their locker room into a hallway while headed for practice earlier this season. They were typical teenagers — fixated on their own chatter, oblivious to an adult stranger.

    Except for Keysaun Eleazar.

The Bulldogs’ 6-foot-6, 210-pound defensive end walked, helmet in hand, with a welcoming countenance above the crowd — literally and figuratively.

“Hi, how are you?” said Eleazor, nodding to greet the otherwise invisible visitor.

The Stanford-bound recruit’s nature will serve him well as he embarks on a college career path necessitating a bedside manner. He enrolls in January as a human biology major with a pre-medicine track.

“I would say that comes from my mom (Dominique Eason),” Eleazar said. “She taught me to respect everybody no matter if I know them or not and to welcome everyone.”

Southeast Raleigh opponents will beg to differ on the welcoming part. To them, Eleazar’s greetings are shedding blockers, making tackles and chasing down quarterbacks.

That Keysaun Eleazar isn’t so pleasant.

    Big player, big play

Southeast Raleigh is coming off a 22-19 upset of Clayton last week in a Greater Neuse River Conference game. The Comets (5-2, 2-1 GNR) entered the contest ranked No. 8 in the state 7A poll and with four straight wins over the Bulldogs (5-2, 2-1 GNR) by a combined score of 123-43.

With the signature victory in head coach Edwin Campbell’s fifth year of rebuilding the program, the Bulldogs (5-2, 2-1 GNR) seek their third straight victory at 7 p.m. Friday at Smithfield-Selma (1-6, 0-3 GNR).

Eleazar added to his big-play resume against Clayton with a turning-point interception. The Bulldogs trailed 13-9 early in the third quarter as the defense lined up with a formation calling for Eleazar to rush the quarterback.

But from film study, Eleazar read a screen pass to his side. He dropped back in coverage as the running back drifted outside and curled inside. As the pass was delivered, Eleazar popped out from behind a blocker for the interception.

Southeast Raleigh defensive end Keysaun Eleazer (11) made the interception and is grappled by Clayton's Cory Robinson (75) during the second half. The Southeast Raleigh Bulldogs and the Clayton Comets met in a non-conference football game in Raleigh, N.C. October 3, 2025

“I wanted to run it back for a touchdown, but the offensive lineman was right on me,” Eleazar said.

The Bulldogs took possession and mounted a 10-play, 62-yard touchdown drive for a 15-13 lead with 4:52 remaining in the third period.

The interception was Eleazar’s first, but Campbell said he has seen his Eleazar disrupt such plays many times.

“In practice, our offense can’t get any work done on a screen play to his side,” Campbell said. “He breaks up the play every time.”

Eleazar’s breakout junior year led to a senior season facing double-team blocking and plays run away from him. But rather than growing frustrated with schemes targeting him, he doubled down on techniques, fundamentals and film study.

“I like that challenge,” he said. “It shows they respect me. Garner put four guys on me, but I still made the tackle. To me, they’re making my film better.”

    Finding Stanford

Eleazar’s junior season success was despite missing most of his sophomore year with a labrum injury. As his offers list grew into the 30s, Campbell suggested Eleazar draw up a check list of his priorities ranking academics, football program, schemes, et al.

“I put together a google slide list,” Eleazar said. “Originally Stanford wasn’t on my list or when I narrowed it to a top five.”

But since academics were at the top of his priorities and distance wasn’t a concern, he listened when contacted by Stanford general manager Andrew Luck. The Stanford All-American quarterback and the 2011 Maxwell Award winner — the other Heisman Trophy — and four-time NFL Pro Bowler took on the GM role in 2024.

Luck made an impression on Eleazar and that kept Stanford in the picture, even after Luck suddenly fired Cardinal head coach Troy Taylor on March 25 for allegations of bullying staff members. Stanford hired Frank Reich on March 31 as its interim head coach.

Eleazar said Reich’s interim tag didn’t dissuade him because Luck’s presence was the foundation of his interest. He’s confident the GM is committed to his alma mater located San Francisco’s Bay Area. Eleazar made an official visit on May 15 and weighed his options until announcing his commitment on July 1.

He carries a 4.3 grade-point average, and Campbell added, he is “a member of multiple honor societies and programs our school offers. You name it, he’s in it.”

    Roots in Raleigh

Eleazar’s road to Stanford took root in Raleigh, even though he was virtually new to The Triangle as an eighth grader at West Millbrook Middle. He had moved with his mother and sisters a couple of times during his elementary and middle school years between Raleigh and Camden, New Jersey.

But one year was enough for his athleticism to attract attention.

“I had a lot of coaches in my ear after middle school about going to their school and later I still heard from coaches about transferring,” Eleazar said. “But when I sat down with Coach Campbell, he showed me his plan for the program. I believed in Coach Campbell. I came here to change the culture of the school and the football program. That’s the direction we’ve been going since my freshman year.”

He explained added inspiration to make a difference stemmed from examples of two uncles in Camden who attended Woodrow Wilson High (renamed Eastside in 2022).

“Raleigh is easy compared to Camden,” he said, shaking his head at Camden’s grittier streets. “But my uncles were able to make a difference at their school. I wanted to make a difference at the school I attend and in the community.”

Recruiters have noticed. In addition to Eleazar, quarterback Tydreke Powell is bound for Gardner-Webb and linebacker Robert McCullough for Campbell. Junior running back Christman Freeman, who committed early to N.C. State, is among the underclassmen attracting scholarship offers.

“We’ve made a big jump this year,” Eleazar said. “Now we’ve got recruiters coming out to see us. Guys used to get overlooked. Football provides a positive for the community. We’ve got more people coming to our games. We’ve got more people donating to our program.”

It helps when the Big Man on Campus welcomes everyone — other than opponents, that is.

  • Player of the Week: Walkersville’s Colton Amoriell – WTOP News

    [ad_1]

Walkersville High School senior Senior Colton Amoriell is the Military Bowl Touchdown Club High School Football Player of the Week.

It’s a good thing the Walkersville football team located a new kicker for this season, recruiting a player off the school’s soccer team. Senior Colton Amoriell, who kicked for the Lions the past three seasons, occasionally needs a rest.

In his first season playing running back at Walkersville, Amoriell has found plenty of success. This past Friday, he carried 19 times for a school-record 384 yards and six touchdowns as the Lions beat Thomas Johnson, 72-27. It was the second-highest rushing total ever for a Frederick County player.

“Last year we had De’Marques Ross, who rushed for 2,000 yards and Colton played wide receiver and was our backup running back,” Walkersville coach Tyler Thompson said. “This year, we needed Colton to move inside and he’s been great.

For his efforts, Amoriell was named the Military Bowl Touchdown Club High School Football Player of the Week.

In addition to handling the kicking chores the past three seasons, Amoriell also is the Lions’ strong safety and kick returner. He was the team’s second-leading receiver last season, is third on the team in tackles this season and has thrived in the spotlight at running back. In five games, the 5-foot-8, 175-pound Amoriell has rushed for 837 yards and 12 touchdowns for Walkersville (3-2).

Walkersville High School senior Senior Colton Amoriell is the Military Bowl Touchdown Club High School Football Player of the Week.

“We knew that he was going to run the ball very efficiently and that he was going to be an all-star pretty much right away,” Thompson said. “But did I know he was going to be able to do this? That was pretty much unheard of.”

This week’s D.C. Touchdown Club Honor Roll:

    ANNE ARUNDEL
Broadneck RB/LB Aaron Foote rushed 12 times for 64 yards and one touchdown and on defense had six tackles all behind the line of scrimmage — 4.5 sacks and 1.5 tackles for loss — as the Bruins beat Glen Burnie, 30-13.

    DC
Digital Pioneers RB King Williams rushed 10 times for 101 yards and three touchdowns as the Pythons beat Phelps, 58-6.

    HOWARD
Guilford Park RB Tyler Lee rushed 13 times for 207 yards and four touchdowns as the Panthers beat Atholton, 45-12. Lee has rushed for more than 200 yards and at least three touchdowns in all five games this season for the Panthers (5-0), totaling 1,090 yards and 17 touchdowns.

    LOUDOUN
Independence QB Nick Nassib completed 14 of 18 passes for 198 yards and three touchdowns and rushed eight times for 121 yards as the Tigers beat Osbourn, 32-15.

Blake RB Junior Rodriguez rushed 12 times for a school-record 315 yards and two touchdowns as the Bengals beat Blair, 25-0.

    NORTHERN REGION
Lake Braddock TE/LB Zach Hibner caught six passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winning 12-yard touchdown in the final minute, and on defense made seven solo tackles with two sacks and two tackles for loss and broke up two passes as the Bruins beat Westfield, 29-23.

Herndon K Ryan Quick made three field goals, including the game-winning 50-yarder as time expired, as the Hornets beat South Lakes, 23-20. Quick also connected on field goal attempts of 37 and 38 yards and punted three times, with a 51-yard punt and two others that were downed inside the 20-yard line.

    PRINCE GEORGE’S
Wise RB/LB Theodore Riley rushed five times for 112 yards and one touchdown, caught a 40-yard pass and on defense made nine tackles and intercepted two passes, returning one for a touchdown as the Pumas beat DuVal, 35-0.

    PRINCE WILLIAM
Gainesville QB David Howe completed 8 of 10 passes for 145 yards and five touchdowns as the Cardinals beat Unity Reed, 55-0.

  • Northeast Philly Shines Nationally — Once Again. – Philadelphia Sports Nation

    [ad_1]

In the long history and deep annals of Philadelphia’s Northeast High School — the NFL has come calling before. Previous graduates Charles Wray and Brent Grimes both attended the school and went on to play in the NFL. Not far away — Northeast High School closed in 2010 was home to Bucko Kilroy — who will go into the Eagles Hall of Fame this November.

Now Northeast High School can claim to be the home of high school success for yet another rising star.

Texas A&M Football was #6 in the country and cornerback Tyreek Chapell are now inside that number after marquee wins this weekend against beating the Mississippi St. yesterday and previously beating Notre Dame and the Fighting Irish in South Bend two weeks ago to propel the program to #5 in the country and a perfect 5–0 for the Aggies Program in 2025.

Designated as a (consensus) three-star recruit by major media outlets (247 Sports, Rivals and ESPN) — Chapell allowed a mere two completions against him out of 41 attempts as a junior at Northeast High School in 2019. As a Sophomore — Chapell was top-ten in the SEC in pass breakups

Now Chapell is looking to carry his dominant coverage that started at Northeast High School to the College Football Playoff — and possibly — to the NFL.

With some of the most dynamic offensive weapons in the greater Raleigh area on both sides of the ball on Friday in a Greater Neuse River 7A conference showdown, it was instead a fourth-quarter defensive stand that sealed Southeast Raleigh’s thrilling 22-19 victory over Clayton.

Southeast Raleigh’s defense, which had already yielded three scores to Clayton’s Aiden Smalls-led offense, buckled down in the final two minutes.

The Comets took over on downs at their own 32 with just over two minutes to play, trailing by three. Smalls found Noah Smith to push his team to its own 43, but with less than a minute to play the Bulldogs’ Cyrus Gunther came up with his team’s second interception of the night on Smalls, sealing an important home win.

With the victory, Southeast Raleigh improves to 2-1 in conference play and 5-2 overall.

The loss for Clayton is its second of the season, and first in conference play, which drops the Comets into a tie with Southeast Raleigh, both in the Greater Neuse River 7A standings and overall.

Southeast Raleigh took its first lead of the game Friday midway through the third quarter. Set up near midfield by a Keysaun Eleazer interception, the Bulldogs drove deep into Clayton territory on the back of two long runs from James Adams IV, the first to the Clayton 22, the second to the Comets’ 9-yard line.

A few plays later the Bulldogs barrelled into the end zone. Despite a second missed PAT, Southeast Raleigh grabbed a two-point lead at 15-13.

The Bulldogs extended their lead late in the third quarter. After N.C. State-bound running back Christian Freeman rumbled down to the Clayton 1-yard line, Southeast Raleigh punched the ball over the line. A successful PAT pushed the home team’s lead to two scores at 22-13.

Smalls, also an N.C. State commit, led Clayton to within a score at 22-19 after he scampered 9 yards to the end zone midway through the fourth quarter.

N.C. State Wolfpack head coach Dave Doeren was at the game Friday, with a pair of offensive recruits squaring off against one another.

    Low-scoring first half

After missing a field goal early, Clayton got on the board first anyway when Smalls found DeAngelo Ruffin for a 62-yard catch-and-run late in the first quarter. Nate Lunger’s PAT put the visitors on top, 7-0.

The Bulldogs replied quickly, completing a 67-yard pass on the next series. Their two-point conversion failed, though, and the Comets retained a one-point lead.

Clayton turned the ball over on downs on its next possession, but the Comets’ defense picked up its offense immediately when Daniel Lovelace-Davis picked off a Southeast Raleigh pass and returned it to the Bulldogs’ 15. Smalls then found TJ Campbell for a second passing score, pushing the Clayton lead back to 13-6.

Southeast Raleigh pulled back to within four points at 13-9 with a 20-yard field goal that closed out the first half.

The Bulldogs return to action next week on the road at Smithfield-Selma. Clayton will regroup at home against South Garner.
