    Nearly 500 extra social and affordable homes will be built close to Sydney’s CBD under revised plans for the rejuvenation of one of Australia’s biggest social housing estates.

    The Waterloo Estate, home to almost 2,500 people, has been earmarked for redevelopment under controversial plans that would involve the demolition of the precinct’s towers, terraces and single-storey cottages.

    Under the previous NSW Coalition government’s plans, the site would be offered to developers on the proviso up to 34 per cent of the 3,000 new homes were social and affordable housing.

    But the Minns Labor government announced on Monday it would increase that to 50 per cent, taking the number of social and affordable homes from 1,074 to about 1,500.

    At least 15 per cent of the new social and affordable properties will be used by people from the Indigenous community.

    There are more than 51,000 people on the public housing waiting list in NSW.

    Premier Chris Minns said the “huge backlog” meant it was important to make more public housing available in development plans.

    The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) has released its annual report, the “2018 Tall Building Year in Review,” part of the Tall Buildings in Numbers data analysis series. The report shows that 143 buildings of 200 meters’ height or greater were completed in 2018, including 18 “supertall” buildings of at least 300 meters’ height, a new record. The total number of supertall buildings worldwide is now 144. In 2013, there were 76 buildings 300 meters or higher worldwide; in 2000, only 26. The 528-meter Citic Tower in Beijing was the tallest building completed in 2018.

    China has maintained its reign as the most prolific country when it comes to the construction of tall buildings, with 88 completions in 2018, for 61.5 percent of the total. This is a record for China, exceeds last year’s figure by eight, and represents an even greater proportion of the global total than the 2017 figure of 54.4 percent. China’s previous record was set in 2016, with 86 buildings of 200 meters or higher. Second place was again held by the United States, with 13 completions, up from 10 in 2017. And once again, outdoing its own record from last year, Shenzhen, China, recorded 14 completions, making this the third year in a row in which the city accounted for the world’s largest number of 200-meter-plus completions, and comprising nearly 10 percent of the global total.

    Given the rate of urbanization seen in the world – and that we must build the equivalent of a new city of 1 million people every week to accommodate this growth – it is not surprising that the pace of tall building construction continues.

    Other dominant characteristics of the 200-meter-plus set included the office function (42 percent), and concrete as the main structural material (62.9 percent). The average height of 200-meter-plus buildings completed in 2018 was 247 meters, a slight increase over the 244-meter figure for 2017. The average height of the World’s 100 Tallest Buildings grew to 381 meters.

    CTBUH examines buildings 200 meters and higher due to the completeness of available data for buildings in this category.

     Inventor and entrepreneur Scott D’Avanzo, CEO of Adrenalin Technologies LLC, wants to improve security response time in the wake of mass shootings. His new patent-pending technology monitors and detects window vibration and breakage in high-rise hotels and other buildings. The system, known as Safe Place, is designed to immediately notify management of the room or suite number in the event of window vibration beyond a certain threshold or breakage.

    One of the biggest challenges in the Las Vegas shooting was being able to identify just exactly where the shooter was at the time. Even when it was pinpointed to the Mandalay Bay hotel, law enforcement still had to clear floors and find the specific room. During that time, the shooting continued. While shootings from high-rise hotels and buildings have been rare, they pose additional complications for law enforcement to detect and stop.

    D’Avanzo was in Las Vegas during the tragedy that occurred in 2017. It happened just a few blocks from his office. He was at his condo during the incident and was listening to a scanner app as police searched multiple floors and hotel rooms trying to find the room in which the shooter was located.

    “As I was listening to the incident unfold, I was motivated to develop a device that could both save lives and prevent this type of tragedy from happening or at least minimize its overall impact,” explains D’Avanzo. “The system includes a sensor that is applied to an existing window that can detect vibration and breakage. The system also has other applications. For instance, it can go on an emergency exit door to indicate something is obstructing it, like in the case of the Capital Gazette shooting that just occurred in June.”
