DC fans across the globe were quite disheartened by the exit of Henry Cavill, the popular Hollywood star from the upcoming Superman film. Initially, it was reported that Cavill will return to DCU to play the legendary character once again in the much-awaited project Man of Steel 2. However, things did not materialize, and the project was soon scrapped. Later, popular filmmaker James Gunn, who joined DC Studios last year, stepped in to direct the new film in the franchise, which has been titled Superman Legacy.
James Gunn to rope in Henry Cavill for a new DCU role?
If the latest updates are to be believed, James Gunn, however, is not ready to let a highly sought-after talent like Henry Cavill part ways with DC Studios. According to recent reports by Fandom Wire, the filmmaker is keen to rope in the talented actor for a new DCU role, after his exit from Superman films. However, it has been confirmed that Cavill no longer plays Clark Kent aka Superman in another DC film.
James Gunn, who is highly active on social media, has not reacted to the reports yet. However, the grapevine suggests that the director is actively in talks with Henry Cavill, and is keen to bring him back to DCU with another plum project. However, the actor is clearly not excited to return, after the massive disappointment he faced with the Man of Steel 2. The rumors suggest that he is reportedly looking forward to joining hands with Marvel Studios for a superhero project, instead.
Henry Cavill is not playing Frankenstein
In March this year, it was rumored that Henry Cavill is set to join hands with DC once again to play the titular role in the upcoming project Frankenstein. However, James Gunn immediately put the rumors to rest with a social media post and confirmed that The Witcher actor is not approached for the role.
David Corenswet steps into Henry Cavill’s shoes as the new Superman
As reported earlier, young actor David Corenswet is set to step into Henry Cavill’s shoes as the new Clark Kent aka Superman in the upcoming project, Superman Legacy. Reportedly, the Pearl actor clearly impressed both James Gunn and the team DC with his excellent screentest and bagged the part. Rachel Brosnahan, on the other hand, is set to play Lois Lane in the film which will start rolling in the beginning of 2024.
Superman Legacy, the highly anticipated fantasy superhero film is one of the most anticipated upcoming Hollywood projects. The much-awaited DCU project is set to mark the prestigious studio’s first onscreen collaboration with James Gunn, the renowned director. Superman Legacy found its lead pair recently, after extensive auditions. David Corenswet has been roped in to play the titular character Superman aka Clark Kent in the film, which will feature Rachel Brosnahan as his lady love and Daily Planet reporter, Lois Lane.
Will Clark Kent and Lois Lane get sidelined in Superman Legacy?
The recent reports on the inclusion of other famous DC superheroes like Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and Mister Terrific in the film had left audiences skeptical, about the importance of the lead actors David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan’s roles in Superman Legacy. It was even rumored that director James Gunn is planning to follow the narrative style of his famous MCU project Guardians of the Galaxy for the upcoming DC project, by introducing more superheroes to the narrative.
The speculations deeply upset the loyal DCU fans, who were already struggling to accept the fact that celebrated star Henry Cavill will not be returning to the role of Superman in the film. Recently, a group of audiences expressed their displeasure over ‘sidelining’ Clark Kent and Lois Lane to include an ensemble star cast in Superman Legacy on social networking app Threads and opined that this move might take away the real essence of DCU.
James Gunn puts rumors to rest, reveals ‘clear protagonists’ of Superman Legacy
However, director James Gunn, who is highly active on Threads these days, immediately rubbished the speculations and put all rumors by making a major revelation. The celebrated filmmaker confirmed that David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan are the ‘clear protagonists’ of Superman Legacy, as the narrative will focus on the journeys of Superman aka Clark Kent and Lois Lane, like the previous films.
“I’ve never used one movie to set up another movie. The other characters are there because they help to tell Superman’s story better, not so we can set up separate projects in the franchise. Superman and Lois Lane are the very clear protagonists,” replied the director to a fan’s question, brushing off rumors surrounding the film’s plot. James Gunn’s revelation came out as a great relief for the DC fans, who were worried about the authenticity of Superman Legacy.
On Wednesday, CD Projekt Red juiced up The Witcher 3 with yet another patch, giving the eight-year-old fantasy role-playing game improved cross-platform progression on consoles, new features for Nintendo Switch, and even better-looking grass for touching purposes.
Diablo IV – Bear Bender Build
The Witcher 3’s version 4.04 patch introduces a hodgepodge of graphical updates and quality-of-life improvements to both console and PC versions of the game, as well as bringing certain specific improvements to the Nintendo Switch. In short, the latest patch improves the Switch’s cross-progression feature making it so that, once logged in to your CD Projekt Red account, you can pick up where you left off in The Witcher 3 on other platforms. The Switch is also getting the Netflix-inspired content other consoles received in the last patch.
Aside from numerous bug fixes like, umm… “mending grass collision,” patch 4.04 has also made it so you don’t have to do so much fussing in menu screens during combat, letting you switch oils and potions right from the game’s radial menu. It’s a welcome change, since oils are vital tools in taking down specific monsters. Now Geralt can bathe his sword in whatever specific concoction will help him defeat the beasties he’s currently battling without you needing to break the flow of combat by opening up the pause menu and fiddling around with witcher’s brew.
These quality-of-life updates come as the second half of the third season of Netflix’s Witcher series—the final season with actor Henry Cavill in the role of Geralt—is almost upon us. In his absence, Liam Hemsworth will take up the Roach-riding mantle, debuting as the Butcher of Blaviken in the show’s fourth season.
The second part of The Witcher’s third season will premiere on the streamer on July 27.
The first episode of The Witcher season 3 begins with a lengthy recap of the previous two seasons: flashes of Henry Cavill in that initial, questionable Geralt wig, Freya Allen as a much-younger, more eyebrow-less Ciri, everyone’s shittier eye contacts, sword fights, magic, and a bit of sex. While watching, I was viscerally reminded of how much ground the series has covered since its 2019 debut—how much better the makeup and styling got, how impressively legible the sword fights are, the undeniable sexiness of most of the cast, and how utterly perfect Cavill is as the eponymous witcher, Geralt of Rivia.
The Witcher 3 Meets Tense Roguelike PvE Card-Battling In Rogue Mage
Netflix’s The Witcher pulls from Andrzej Sapkowski’s fantasy novel series of the same name (which inspired CD Projekt Red’s game franchise), though there are many creative liberties taken with the twisting, turning, time-traveling books. The show can sometimes be a bit of a mess when it comes to plot, getting mired in the political goings-on instead of laser-focusing on the core trio of Geralt, Ciri, and mage Yennefer, but it shines whenever it gives those three center stage. It’s then that you remember: Cavill was made to play Geralt.
Cavill’s physicality and familiarity with Sapkowski’s universe shine in every moment he’s on screen—he perfectly captures the quiet kindness and probing philosophical mind that Geralt displays so often in the books. Geralt can kill you with his bare hands, but he can also have a riveting debate with you about war and race relations, and Cavill embodies that perfectly. I don’t know if I’d call Cavill an excellent actor, but he is an excellent Geralt.
There’s also a special kind of physicality that Cavill brings to the role that’s largely rooted in his ability to do many of his own stunts. While watching this season, I found myself wondering: “Did Cavill take notes from Tom Cruise while on the set of Mission Impossible: Fallout?” Cruise famously does almost all of his own stunts, continuously pushing the limits of what a Hollywood actor can pull off on-screen, and the payoff is obvious: the Mission Impossible films are the best modern action movies by a country mile.
Netflix
Cavill has been working with stunt coordinator Wolfgang Stegemann since Fallout—the two worked together to choreograph the iconic one-shot fight scene from The Witcher season 1, so the connection isn’t all that far-fetched. And Stegemann told GamesRadar that “it’s beautiful to see an actor who’s doing all the stunts themselves. I have a great stunt team but I don’t need a stunt double for him. [This means] I’m able to shoot special camera positions that I would never be able to do without him.”
Will Hemsworth have that kind of dedication to his role? The Witcher series often falters in plot progression and occasionally in character development, but whenever Cavill is fighting in a scene, you can’t look away. And in Season 3, he gets fight scenes and emotionally deep moments in spades, reminding us time and time again that he’s an excellent Geralt of Rivia.
The Witcher without Cavill
Bizarrely, even Netflix seems determined to reassure viewers that yes, Cavill is still in this season of The Witcher. A recent marketing campaign projected the words “Yes, he’s still Geralt in season 3 of The Witcher” on buildings and cliff faces around the world. Sadly he won’t be Geralt in season 4 of The Witcher, and that’s what I’m most worried about.
The Witcher Season 3 is split into two parts with the second set of episodes coming later this month. The first set of episodes ended on a cliffhanger, making the wait for those new episodes feel just a bit longer. Spoilers below for the books, but the second half of the season will likely kick off with the Thanedd coup, an infamous battle that horrifically injures Geralt. He carries that injury with him for the rest of the series, and the aftermath of the coup has major reverberations throughout the entire continent: It dissolves the mages’ Brotherhood, it separates Ciri from Geralt, it crowns an elven queen, it imprisons Yennefer.
The Thanedd coup will drastically shift the series’ pace—expect it to move rapidly, expect the stakes to be upped tenfold, expect your heart to be broken over and over again. It’s hard to imagine anyone other than Cavill shouldering the exciting future of The Witcher, but I’ll keep an open mind. Maybe Hemsworth has got the chops, and his Geralt of Rivia will be one for the ages. The Witcher showrunners have promised a “flawless” and “meta” transition from Cavill to Hemsworth, so I’m at least looking forward to seeing how they pull that one off.
The Witcher Season 3 Volume 1 is streaming now on Netflix; Volume 2 is due out on July 27.
Netflix has released a new trailer for The Witcher season 3. The season 3 trailer has sent fans into frenzy with the part one all set to be released on June 29, 2023. As announced before, The Witcher season 3 will be split into two different parts.
Season 3 will also be the last season where Henry Cavill will be seen in the lead role of Geralt before taking his leave from the show. Chris Hemsworth will replace Cavill in The Witcher.
Recently, ahead of The Witcher season 3 part 1 release, Netflix debuted a new trailer for season 3. Here is everything to know about the same.
The Witcher Season 3 trailer
The new trailer gives the fans a glimpse of the upcoming season involving the great battles and love stories. It showcases the adventure of Geralt, Yennefer of Vengerberg, and Princess Ciri. Princess Ciri had become a target of multiple groups in The Continent because of how powerful she had become. The trailer also teases a softer side of Geralt this time around.
Reportedly, the third season is inspired by Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher book series, Time of Contempt. The cast ensemble of The Witcher Season 3 includes Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, Freya Allen as Ciri of Cintra, Joey Batey as Jaskier, MyAnna Buring as Tissaia, Anna Shaffer as Triss Merigold, Royce Pierreson as Istredd, and others.
About The Witcher Season 3
The official synopsis of The Witcher season 3 reads:
As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it. Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line — or risk losing each other forever.
The announcement of Henry Cavill‘s departure from the role of Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher left fans devastated as they were unable to envision anyone else embodying the beloved character. However, after the upcoming third season, Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth will step into Geralt’s shoes. According to the executive producers of the Netflix show, Hemsworth’s entrance will make perfect sense to diehard fans who are familiar with the books that inspired the series.
Henry’s departure and remaining faithful to the lore
In anticipation of the release of the new episodes, which will serve as Henry Cavill’s final portrayal of the sword-wielding monster hunter, Metro.co.uk spoke to executive producers Steve Gaub and Tomasz ‘Tomek’ Baginski about the transition. Tomek emphasized that while Henry’s departure is bittersweet, Liam’s introduction aligns with the established lore of The Witcher. He stated, “The idea to introduce Liam… is very, very accurate with the lore of The Witcher. People who actually know all the books and know book five and the idea that there are many versions of the same story… I think that they might like it quite a lot.”
Emotional farewell and exciting future for Henry
As season three marks Henry Cavill’s final performance as Geralt, fans can expect an emotional goodbye while eagerly anticipating Liam Hemsworth’s portrayal. Steve, who has been involved with The Witcher since its premiere, expressed his personal satisfaction with the strength of the season in terms of Geralt’s character development and Henry’s growth as an actor. He highlighted Henry’s ability to expand the character, becoming not only a Witcher but also a father, a husband, and a close friend to Jaskier.
Despite the emotional impact of Henry’s departure, the producers are confident in the strength of The Witcher franchise, consisting of well-written characters and a captivating world. Steve emphasized their belief in the audience’s continued journey with the show, now with Liam Hemsworth as the new face of Geralt. Liam, in his statement confirming his casting, paid tribute to Henry’s exceptional portrayal of the character and expressed gratitude for being entrusted with the role’s next chapter.
With Liam Hemsworth poised to embrace the challenge, fans can anticipate a fresh take on Geralt while staying connected to the essence of the character and the captivating world of The Witcher. As the fantasy series continues to evolve, the enduring appeal lies in the rich storytelling and the dedicated fan base eagerly awaiting the next chapter of this epic adventure.
Superman is unarguably one of the most loved superhero characters ever made in history. Recently, it was confirmed that DC Movies is set to be back with yet another film based on the much-loved hero. The project, which has been officially titled Superman Legacy, is helmed by renowned filmmaker James Gunn. Expectations are riding high on the film, which is reportedly based on the origin story of Clark Kent aka Superman.
James Gunn reveals what he is looking for in his version of Clark Kent
In his recent interview with Variety, director James Gunn opened up about his ambitious project, and revealed what he is looking for, in his version of Clark Kent aka Superman. “The next Superman has to be someone who has all the humanity that Superman has but he’s also an alien,” said the excited filmmaker. “It’s gotta be somebody who has the kindness and the compassion that Superman has and be somebody who you want to give a hug,” he added.
DC Studios co-head James Gunn has clarified the “Superman: Legacy” rumor. It was revealed in October that Gunn and Peter Safran would be in charge of DC Studios. Following his appearance as the Man of Steel in Black Adam, Henry Cavill said that he would be reprising his Superman role in further forthcoming films. But there was controversy when Cavill announced that Gunn and Safran had other ideas for Superman in their new DC Extended Universe and that his comeback as the superhero wouldn’t be proceeding after all.
“Superman’s reinvention” was not Gunn’s first thought when he accepted the position at DC Studios in October, he said. The director has stated that Superman: Legacy was an already-in-development project that was planned from the beginning to be entirely distinct from Zack Snyder’s films and the Cavill interpretation of the character. In response to a question from a fan concerning the start date of Superman: Legacy, Gunn clarified this on Twitter.
Was Henry Cavill fired from the role?
This relates to remarks Gunn made in a prior THR interview. He responds to those who claim that he and Safran “fired” Cavill from his Superman role by claiming that they were never the ones to recruit him in the first place. Since Superman: Legacy was already in development when Gunn learned about the Black Adam appearance, he probably already has a clear idea of what he wants the film to be.
“We didn’t fire Henry.” “Henry was never cast,” Gunn explained. “For me, it’s about who I want to cast as Superman and who the filmmakers want to cast.” “And for me, for this story, it isn’t Henry.”
Gunn went on to say, “I like Henry; I think he’s a great guy.” I think he’s getting screwed around by a lot of people, including the former regime at this company. “But this Superman is not Henry, for a number of reasons.”
Henry Cavill’s response:
The main result is that Cavill doesn’t seem to have been aware of James’ claim that he had had permission to begin planning a route for a whole new Superman plot.
Although it now appears evident Warner had no genuine aspirations of pursuing that—as demonstrated by the employment of Gunn and Safran as co-bosses—he claimed he was directed by the WBD to declare he was formally returning to the post.
In other words, it seemed like Cavill was being jerked around. It’s hard to say who is at fault in this situation.
All we know is that, following this, Henry most likely won’t work with them again. And this is not the first time an actor has been offended; since James Gunn and Zack Snyder took over, there have been numerous exits and entries.
The DC Universe (DCU) has experienced quite a shakeup of late. With James Gunn and Peter Safran being named co-CEOS of the DCU in October, the changes have been swift and impactful. So far, the duo seems to be aiming to retire most of the regiment’s former heroes. One of the first to go was Henry Cavill’s Superman. Cavill was actually the actor who launched the DCU with his role as Clark Kent (a.k.a. Superman) in the 2013 film Man of Steel. He would go on to portray Superman in various DC titles on the big screen until 2016.
Aside from the release of the director’s cut of Justice League (Zack Snyder’s Justice League), Cavill went on a 6-year hiatus from the DCU as Superman. However, Black Adam, which premiered in October 2022, brought with it a cameo that held Superman’s long-awaited reintroduction. For a while, Cavill’s future as Superman seemed bright. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson began promising fans that a Black Adam vs. Superman was imminent, and Cavill himself took to Instagram to announce his return.
However, just weeks after Cavill’s return, Gunn and Safran took over DCU and decided to retire Cavill’s Superman in favor of rebooting the DCU entirely and focusing on a fresh start for the majority of the main characters.
Who will be the next Superman?
So far, Cavill’s replacement as Superman in the DCU has not been announced. However, Gunn did unveil the reason for Cavill’s departure. In a Tweet, he revealed that a young Superman project is on the horizon. While Superman will be a part of Gunn’s and Safran’s DCU, they are seeking to focus on an “earlier part” of Superman’s history. Hence, the duo seems to be seeking an actor younger than Cavill to portray the role of Superman.
Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.
This bit of information is not a lot to work with. However, here are 7 young actors who boast the star power, acting skill, and physical appearance to potentially take on the role of a young Superman.
Austin Butler
(Warner Bros.)
Austin Butler is an actor on the rise in Hollywood after his electric performance as Elvis Presley in the 2022 biopic Elvis. In addition to Elvis, he has starred in The Shannara Chronicles and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. He is slowly starting to be picked up by big franchises and blockbusters, too, as he will star in Dune: Part Two in 2023. In addition to being a trending and talented actor, he boasts the looks of Superman. At 6’0” with chiseled features, hair that can be dyed black, and piercing blue eyes, he is the spitting image of a young Superman. Fan art has already highlighted how natural he would look in the Superman suit. At 31, he may be veering on the older side for the role, but he can still pass for a young man in his 20s for a few years. Plus, fans are already putting in a good word for him with Gunn.
Jacob Elordi
(Warner Bros.)
Another fan favorite that has arisen for the role of young Superman is Jacob Elordi. While he has less of an expansive resume than Butler, he is also a trending actor who has found star power among the younger generation. His roles in The Kissing Booth trilogy and Euphoria have given him a whirlwind rise to fame. Plus, the fact that he’s 25, has chiseled features, and stands at 6’5” also adds to his appeal as Superman. He is a perfect age, has the fan power, and looks for Superman, but, given his relatively fresh career, it’s unclear if he would have the acting prowess to take on a role like Superman.
Y’all might tear me apart for this one but… imagine a Superman Year One film. But it’s like his first week as #Superman. Vibrant colors & a lighter tone similar to Christopher Reeve’s films. I could imagine someone like Jacob Elordi pulling this off well. pic.twitter.com/yq7qfqixcu
Wolfgang Novogratz is another name that has come up in the discussion of who could be a young Superman. Like Elordi, he is another actor who has gained momentum and popularity with younger audiences. He is known for starring in Sierra Burgess Is a Loser, Yes, God, Yes, and The Half of It. Novogratz may not have the star power of some other choices on this list, but his experience in the coming-of-age genre could help him fit in well with the role of a fledging young superhero. At 6’3” with a fit physique and chiseled features, he also looks the part of Superman.
David Corenswet
(Netflix)
While many fans tapped Elordi as Superman, many also mentioned David Corenswet’s name alongside his.
There are, I think, two young actors who are most likely to play the new Superman (if they go with a standard white guy Superman) Jacob Elordi and his Frank Quitely style chin Or David Corenswet and his Curt Swan style chin pic.twitter.com/EIiv28VJX6
Corenswet has been active on the Hollywood scene for over a decade now. He boasts credits in such works as Look Both Ways, Hollywood, and We Own This City. However, he is still in need of a breakthrough role, and Superman could be that for him. Meanwhile, he has the acting skills for the job with his impressive performance in Hollywood, combined with the fact that he started off performing in theatre and has been acting since he was a child. At 29, he is the right age for the role and also boasts Superman’s characteristics with his chiseled chin, blue eyes, jet black hair, and a height of 6’4”. It’s just unclear if DC would take a chance an on actor who hasn’t yet had his breakthrough.
Eli Goree
(Amazon Studio)
Eli Goree is another name that arose quickly when it was revealed that DCU was looking for a young Superman. His name had already been in the running for Superman after it was announced Ta-Nehisi Coates was developing a Superman reboot centered on Calvin Ellis. However, young Superman offers another perfect role for the young actor. The award-winning actor has starred in Riverdale, The Peripheral, and One Night in Miami. Needless to say, he has proven that he boasts incredible talent in a wide range of genres. At 6’2,” 28 years of age, and the physique to portray a professional boxer, he is an excellent choice for Superman.
Adam DiMarco
(Warner Bros.)
Adam DiMarco is another actor on the rise who bears a resemblance to Superman. He is most well-known for starring in Pillow Talk and The White Lotus. DiMarco isn’t the most prominent actor in Hollywood, but his roles in Disney channel originals like Radio Rebel and Zapped gained him a large fanbase. DiMarco also boasts an uncanny physical resemblance to Superman, plus charisma and acting skills. At roughly 31 years old, he is a strong candidate for a young Superman, and the role could give him his much-needed official breakthrough.
Fionn Whitehead
(Warner Bros.)
Fionn Whitehead only recently entered the film industry, kicking off his debut as the lead protagonist in the critically acclaimed Christopher Nolan film, Dunkirk. While the first film he starred in gained eight Academy Awards, he has gone on to star in Emily and the upcoming Great Expectations film. At 25 years old, his breakthrough in Dunkirk was unexpected and impressive. It wouldn’t be surprising for some big franchises to be casting their eyes on the relative newcomer, Whitehead, for future roles.
David Alvarez
(20th Century Studios)
At age 28, David Alvarez is a relative newcomer to Hollywood, with his most significant acting credit being his role as Bernardo in the 2021 musical, West Side Story. Aside from West Side Story, Alvarez has only appeared in short films. However, he has been acting his whole life and was one of the youngest actors to receive a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for his stint as Billy Elliot in Billy Elliot the Musical. Nabbing his first feature film debut in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story is the only testimony needed for his acting skills. He’s also the right age for Superman, in physical shape for the role, and has the necessary experience and skill.

There is an awkward press junket in Netflix’s future because while Henry Cavill is not returning for the fourth season of the popular fantasy series The Witcher, a third season with Henry Cavill is still happening.
Filming for season 3 of The Witcher started back in April 2022, around the time Deadline shared an image of the three leads sitting together during production: Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, and Freya Allan as Princess Cirilla of Cintra. They also shared a rough idea of what we would see in the upcoming season:
“Per the official logline, in season 3, as monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it. Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’v landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line — or risk losing each other forever.”
Will Henry Cavill return to The Witcher?
We recently learned that Liam Hemsworth will be replacing Cavill as Geralt in future seasons. What we don’t yet know is how the transition from Cavill to Hemsworth will be addressed in-universe, if at all. This wouldn’t be the first time something like this happened. The “Other Darrin” trope exists because of the semi-commonality of this very thing. On the show Bewitched, Darrin Stephens—the mortal husband of Samantha—was played for most of the series’ run by Dick York, but when York got sick, Dick Sargent replaced him for the final three seasons. Other Darrin, other Dick.
I don’t know how they will make it work in the show, but we do get one more season of The Witcher with Cavill before saying goodbye.
Henry Cavill’s place in a lot of major franchises is now coming into question. Unfortunately, he won’t be returning as Geralt in The Witcher. His role has been recast, and Liam Hemsworth is set to take his place in the role in season 4 of the show. This news comes on the heels of some other major developments surrounding Cavill’s role as Superman. James Gunn stepped in as the co-CEO of DC Studios, and there have been some pretty big shakeups.
At first, Henry Cavill’s return as Superman seemed pretty certain, since he appeared in the role after the end credits of Black Adam. But yesterday Gunn tweeted that he is now writing a new Superman movie for a younger actor, and with that Cavill’s reprise of the Man of Steel was done.
Cavill took to Instagram to lament his loss of the role, while also sharing that he was thankful for the opportunity in the first place. “It’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman,” he wrote. “After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. I respect that James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.”
Some Witcher fans were hopeful that if Cavill won’t be busy with Superman he might be able to return for more seasons of The Witcher, but that doesn’t look to be the case. A Netflix executive told Variety that their plans have not changed, and that Hemsworth will take over for Cavill starting with Season 4.
“Henry is an extraordinary Geralt and I think Liam will continue and also be an extraordinary Geralt,” Netflix’s Peter Friedlander said. “There has been a legacy of amazing, iconic characters where the actors have changed and we’re hugely optimistic about this. We will continue to honor the IP, the fans, the storytelling, all the way through.”

When last we left Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown) in 2020, she had been effectively abandoned by her mother, Eudoria (Helena Bonham Carter). Yet it was hard to begrudge this freedom fighter the “abandonment” of her child when it was all in the name of the feminist cause. Even if that cause required a bit of explosive violence to get the job done. For, as Eudoria declared to Enola in a letter she left behind with some cash, “Our future is up to us.” Would that the same could be said for women of the working class, which is the demographic that Jack Thorne’s script (Thorne also penned the one for Enola Holmes) focuses on the most. Indeed, it’s the match girls who work in horrific factory conditions that drive the majority of the plot.
One match girl in particular, Bessie (Serrana Su-Ling Bliss), is the force that manages to prevent Enola from hanging up her detective’s hat entirely. For that’s just what she’s about to do when Bessie timidly walks into Enola’s erstwhile office. Which she can no longer afford as there are no clients willing to hire her, either because of misogyny (“Am I addressing the secretary?”) or ageism. As to the latter, she suffers the same kind of commentary as Doogie Howser might endure, with comments like, “You’re how old?” and “Stone the crows, you’re young.” In effect, no one trusts her or takes her seriously the way they do her overburdened-with-cases brother, Sherlock (Henry Cavill). Just another bane to living in 1800s-era London. Not to mention being in the thick of the Industrial Revolution’s after-effects. This including treating the worker like shit in the name of profit. Something the match girls know all about, as we see them subject themselves to the “new fever” called typhus in service to the work. Basically what happened during the onset of COVID-19, when some people got to stay at home and others didn’t have the same luxury of “staying safe” due to their class station.
Enola, who feels it must be kismet that Bessie found a months-old ad of hers floating around on the street, agrees to assist in the search for her “sister,” Sarah Chapman (Hannah Dodd), a seasoned match girl that’s taken Bessie in as though she’s family at the ramshackle where she also lives with another factory employee named Mae (Abbie Hern). Upon seeing Enola in her abode, Mae snaps, “We don’t need help from people like you,” alluding to the overt signs of Enola’s class. Despite the lack of a warm reception to her presence, Enola goes even deeper into the case by infiltrating the factory as a match girl. Working next to Bessie, she creates a diversion to get into the manager’s office whereupon she discovers missing pages ripped from a ledger. Enola is also quick to notice that Lyon’s matches have only recently turned from red tips to white ones. Surely not a coincidence. And while she feels she’s close to grasping at something, like Sherlock with his own current case, the puzzle pieces simply haven’t come together.
It doesn’t help matters that Enola still finds herself preoccupied with Lord Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge), who was at the center of the caper in the first film. The two continue to awkwardly flirt and semi-court, but it’s clear Enola is the one holding things back in the relationship thanks to the echoes of and flashbacks to the “independent woman”-oriented aphorisms her mother instilled within her.
Regarding the Tewkesbury romance, although some of the movie posters make Enola Holmes 2 come across as just another Jane Austen or Bridgerton knockoff, the majority of the movie speaks to the oppression of the worker. And yes, Sarah Chapman was a real person, even if not quite so model-esque as Hannah Dodd. Much like the Reform Bill featured in Enola Holmes was based on a real bill called the Third Reform Act. Director Harry Bradbeer (who also worked on the first film) and screenwriter Thorne are sure to use revisionist history to their advantage (though not so freely as someone like Ryan Murphy) in this edition of the Enola Holmes saga as well, with Chapman being at the center of a class war made all the more complex by the fact that she has secretly been dating William Lyon (Gabriel Tierney), the son of Lyon’s owner, Henry (David Westhead). But the web of deceit will turn out to be even more convoluted when Sherlock’s adversary in a battle of wits, Moriarty, enters into the equation.
Meanwhile, in the midst of her investigation, Enola has managed to get herself caught red-handed in the very manner from which the phrase originated: with blood all over her hands. This resulting in an arrest from the extremely smarmy Superintendent Grail (David Thewlis), who has no qualms choking Enola to attempt extracting the location of Sarah. When Enola insists she doesn’t know where Sarah is, Grail threatens, “Well if I can’t find it out from you, I’ll find it out from someone else. Like her sister, little Bessie.” Taking his meaning for the threat that it is, Enola replies, “She’s just a little girl.” Grail screams, “Oh, but that’s how it starts, Enola Holmes! With little girls like her, and you, and Sarah Chapman. Asking questions. Doubting those in charge, not seeing their protection for what it is, trying to tear it down.” Enola appears as though she might cry, but maintains a stiff upper lip (what all women must do if they want to “play by the rules” in a “man’s game”) as Grail continues, “Well it only takes one little flame to start a fire and my job is to keep crushing those bloody flames out.” Spoken like a beacon of upper management. And also a demagogue/dictator in the vein of Trump or Putin.
The question is later asked by a certain woman (who shall go unnamed to prevent from unveiling the mystery), “Why shouldn’t I be rewarded for what I can do? Where is my place in this…society?” Many women are still asking that question. Particularly those who must slave away as both a mother and a “paid employee” (as though the slog of motherhood isn’t worth something far more than the type of labor capitalism values). It is this dual role that catches the match girls of Enola Holmes 2 afraid to take a stand against their abuse in the final minutes of the film. An abuse so grotesque that they should automatically walk out without needing any convincing from Sarah.
But they do. Not just because the manager, a mouthpiece for the “seduction” of regular weekly earnings, shouts, “Think of your families, don’t do it girls. It’s not worth the risk.” And “the risk” he doesn’t want them to take is marching right out of the factory when Sarah urges them to protest with her against the dire conditions she’s unearthed. Informing them, as someone who has finally seen the light about the power of the worker, “It’s time for us to use the only thing we have: ourselves. It’s time for us to refuse to work. It’s time for us to tell ‘em no… I know you’re scared. I am too, but it’s the only power we have!” So here the viewer is given the expected, uplifting Act Three visualization of how “it only takes one little flame to start a fire” (to use that aforementioned match girl pun).
These, of course, are very pleasant thoughts to console oneself with as Iran arrests and/or puts to death the female protesters who have been called to action in the wake of Mahsa Amini’s own death at the hands of Iran’s “morality police” back in September. Suffice it to say, Enola Holmes 2 won’t be much welcomed in that country. Or really, any other. For they’re all mostly patriarchies that prefer to treat women and the worker like caged animals.
DC has a reputation for making gritty movies. While it works sometimes, Henry Cavill says when he makes his big return as Superman in an upcoming movie, he is looking forward to a more hopeful version of the character. Cavill previously appeared in director Zack Snyder’s DC films, which tended to take Superman into the shadows. There are definitely arcs within the comics that see Superman in that kind of light, but they’re not really the truest to the character.
Superman has long been considered a boy scout. He’s your prototypical superhero, stopping runaway trains, and rescuing damsels in distress, all with a smile and a wave. After a while, writers got bored of that whole schtick and started asking questions. What’s left for the man who has everything? What are the limits of corruption for an infinitely powerful being? These questions gave rise to an unstoppable, darker Superman, who would frequently be at odds with other heroes and villains alike.
Henry Cavill recently sat down with ScreenRantto talk about his take on Superman. The interview was about Enola Holmes 2, but since Superman appears in the post-credits scene of Black Adam, questions were bound to arise. Cavill said:
Obviously, I have a very close connection to the character. And there is something extraordinarily special about him; extraordinarily special about his capacity to give and to love. I don’t mean romantically; I mean his love for Earth and for the people who live here, and to make people feel powerful—to make people feel like Superman themselves. I have plenty of desires for this, of course, which will be discussed more in time. But the most important thing, which I will be aiming for, is for the audience to leave the cinema and to feel like they can fly, to feel like they can protect, and to feel like they want to give to everyone else. That would be my goal.
Black Adam is now playing in theaters. Enola Holmes 2 debuts on Netflix on November 4. Warner Bros. has yet to announce when or where Cavill’s Superman may appear next.
Black Adam: The Coolest DC Easter Eggs
Here are all there references to DC comics you might have missed in Black Adam.
The first time the internet saw DCU Superman star Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s adaptation of The Witcher, it howled in collective laughter over the terrible wig. Four years later, fans are losing their minds that Hollywood’s leading himbo won’t be reprising the role after season three ends. One obvious explanation for why is that Cavill has signed on to shoot a new Superman movie, but fans think the real reason Cavill is leaving is that he’s tired of fighting with Netflix to keep The Witcher true to its literary source material.
The surprising news of Cavill’s impending departure was shared yesterday in a statement by Netflix that also announced Liam Hemsworth of Hunger Games fame would be taking over the role in season four. “As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men,” Cavill was quoted as saying. “Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”
While many were disappointed that The Man From U.N.C.L.E. would no longer be caught growling “Roach” at horses in future seasons, Witcher fans took the news especially badly. Subreddits for the books, games, and Netflix series blew up with disbelief, frustration, and memes, while conspiracy theories got passed around on Twitter that Cavill had been more or less forced out over creative differences with a production that has at times taken generous liberties with Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski’s original novels. Certain parts of the Witcher fandom have always had a toxic relationship with the show, fuming over certain casting choices and plot deviations, and Cavill’s departure is now being taken as validation of every criticism they’ve ever had.
To support their theories, fans point to a breadcrumb trailof previous interview quotes by Cavill about his desire to keep Netflix’s Geralt true to the one originally put to paper in the pages of fantasy magazine Fantastyka back in 1986. Less than a year ago the actor said he told the Hollywood Reporter he was “absolutely” committed to the show’s seven-season plan “as long as we can keep telling great stories which honor [author Andrzej] Sapkowski’s work.”

Instant Facelift Think of the Foreo Bear as exercise for your face, engaging muscles to provide radiance and lift with lasting results.
During the media tour around season two’s release last year, Cavill spoke repeatedly about campaigning to bring more three-dimensionality to Geralt, noting that in addition to a brutish monster slayer he’s also wise, thoughtful, and an “amateur philosopher.” “This season, I really wanted to make sure that we represented the book’s Geralt more accurately, and that we saw him speak more,” he told Total Film at the time. “I pushed really, really hard for that.”
Then there was showrunner Lauren Hissrich’s own comments about Cavill’s preparation for season two. “A lot of the notes he was sending to me were about Geralt’s dialogue—could he, first of all, say more,” she told Hollywood Reporter. “Everybody came out of season one laughing and loving Geralt’s fuming. But Henry was saying that when you read the books you spend a lot of time in Geralt’s head. So how can we put that on the page?”What about Cavill’s aspirations for the future of the series? “I’m a huge fan of the books and staying loyal to them, and it’s about making sure that story happens without too much in the way of diversions or side things going on to muddy the waters,” he said during a Netflix Geeked conversation last year. Adding fuel to the fire was a recent interview with Beau DeMayo, a former producer on The Witcher who is now running X-Men ‘97 on Disney+, where he said some writers “actively disliked” and even “mocked” the source material.

Some fans’ takeaways from these soundbytes has been that while Hissrich was focused on making the show what she wanted it to be, Cavill was the only one interested in trying to keep it grounded in the original version of the characters. This comes in the context of long Reddit threads like this one where fans have detailed all of the ways season two was different from the books, with fears that season three, not set to air until the summer of 2023, might include even larger departures.
While the theory is a compelling one when collapsed into a couple of viral tweets, the show’s place within the larger fandom has always been more complicated than that. Hissrich was temporarily chased off Twitter prior to season one’s release when racist fans petitioned Netflix to only let a white woman play the lead role of Ciri, Geralt’s adopted daughter. Then there were those on the edge of the fandom with no knowledge of or interest in the grimdark fantasy series until Netflix spent tens of millions bringing it to life. “Book purists are hurting the experience for new fans,” wrote one user on the show’s subreddit last year. Then there are fans of CD Projekt Red’s Witcher video game trilogy which takes huge liberties with the storytelling, and has effectively created its own parallel lore.
Whether Cavill was a purist on set is almost beside the point. His role in season two clearly did little to prevent some of the narrative departures fans took the biggest issue with. But he was clearly the glue holding the show’s disparate fandoms together. The fact that he loves PC gaming and painting Warhammer miniatures in his free time, and obviously was a big fan of Sapkowski’s books, gave him huge street cred with even the worst diehard Witcher fans. Normies and newcomers loved him too, not because he’s a pedant when it comes to the lore but because he’s a charismatic presence that did, in the end, manage to combine tenderness, ruthlessness, and a morbid wit into something deeper than his Halloween Spirit costume initially suggested. “I think the glue that held it together really was Henry Cavill as Geralt,” former Kotaku senior critic Harper Jay said during a 2018 VG chat about the first season.
With that glue gone, The Witcher season four has its work cut out for it with the circumstances around Cavill’s leaving dogging it at every turn. Whether Hemsworth is up to the task or not, the news at least comes with season three already wrapped. Fans will get one last chance to return to that world with Cavill as an anchor. I’m sure it will all go fine, and not stoke even more conspiratorial speculation over creative differences.
Henry Cavill is putting down his blades and moving on from “The Witcher” after three seasons as the leading man on the Netflix series.
The actor confirmed that he will be stepping away from the role on his Instagram on Friday, writing, “My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4.”
He went on to share that actor Liam Hemsworth “will be taking up the mantle” of the heroic blonde-haired character.
“As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men,” Cavill wrote.
On his own Instagram, “The Hunger Games” star Hemsworth wrote on Saturday that as a fan of the show, he was “over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia.”
“Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure,” he wrote.
“The Witcher,” which premiered on Netflix in 2019, is based on the fantasy book series by Andrzej Sapkowski and created for television by Lauren Schmidt. It has received favorable reviews and already spawned a second season that was released last year. Season 3 is due next summer.
At San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, ahead of the show’s premiere, Cavill spoke about lobbying for the role after playing a popular video game also based on the literary series.
“I’m a gamer,” he said at the time, via Vulture. “I was very very passionate about the games. I thought, ‘I really hope they make this into a TV show or movie.’”
When the show finally was in development, Cavill was proactive about being considered for the starring role – even before a script had been finalized.
“It was something I wasn’t going to let pass me by without giving it my best shot,” Cavill said at Comic Con. “I annoyed my agents all the time. They said, ‘They’re not ready.’”
But now, Cavill is surely focused on reprising another iconic previous role on his resume.
He was recently confirmed to again be portraying Clark Kent/the Man of Steel in upcoming projects for DC. (CNN and HBO Max are both part of the same parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery.)
On the possible docket is a crossover movie featuring Superman and Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, after Cavill’s mid-credits cameo in this month’s successful “Black Adam,” as well as a rumored standalone sequel to 2013’s “Man of Steel.”
Just days prior to his post about “The Witcher,” Cavill shared on Instagram an image of himself as Superman along with a video speaking about his return.
“A very small taste of what’s to come, my friends. The dawn of hope renewed,” he wrote.

Henry Cavill is leaving Netflix’s The Witcher after Season 3 the streaming service announced today.
Widely regarded as the best thing about the fantasy drama, and a crucial part of its success, the departure will no doubt shock fans of the series.
Cavill is being replaced by Liam Hemsworth, brother to Thor actor Chris Hemsworth.
“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4,” Cavill announced on Instagram. “In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”
“As a Witcher fan I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia,” Hemsworth said, also via Instagram. “Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure. Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”
I admit, I had to check my calendar to make sure this wasn’t an April Fool’s day prank.
Alas, that does not seem to be the case.

This Is Not Good
I have nothing against Liam Hemsworth but recasting a character four seasons in is never a good thing. When it’s the very distinct, very well-established lead protagonist it’s a catastrophe in the making.
Frankly, The Witcher was already showing signs of weakness in Season 2, and it’s possible that Cavill doesn’t want to go down with the ship and is getting out before things get worse. Perhaps there are creative differences we don’t know about. Perhaps he will simply be too busy playing Superman in the newly-re-branded DCU.
Netflix is spinning this as “exciting news” but it’s actually the furthest thing from it. No matter how well Hemsworth does in the role, audiences will have a deeply difficult time accepting him as Geralt. It was already going to be a challenge to move from video game Geralt (or book Geralt) to a live-action actor, but Cavill did such a terrific job pretty much everyone was onboard after the first season.
Cavill also has shown a deep passion for this project and for the Witcher stories and games and has been a champion of fidelity to the source material. Without him involved, I am deeply concerned that the show will falter.
Frankly, Cavill leaving should either mean A) the end of the show or B) moving the story in a new direction with a new Witcher in the title role who isn’t Geralt. By all means, bring Hemsworth in to play a different Witcher with a different backstory and personality. This isn’t Doctor Who. You can’t just swap out Geralts every three seasons.
In any case, this is breaking news and I’m still wrapping my brain around it. But this has, in one fell swoop, pretty much crushed my hopes for the future of The Witcher on Netflix. Whatever Cavill’s true reasons for leaving, I can’t imagine this show going anywhere but downhill.
Interestingly, this also comes directly after a former producer on the show, Beau DeMayo, claimed that writers on The Witcher actively disliked the books and games.
“I’ve been on shows – namely Witcher – where some of the writers were not or actively disliked the books and games (even actively mocking the source material),” DeMayo explained. “It’s a recipe for disaster and bad morale. Fandom as a litmus test checks egos, and makes all the long nights worth it. You have to respect the work before you’re allowed to add to its legacy.”
Are these things connected? We’ll likely never know.
R.I.P. Netflix’s The Witcher. The final season with Cavill as Geralt of Rivia will air in Summer 2023. A spinoff show, The Witcher: Blood Origin, comes out on December 25th.
I guess this is one way to learn that the show has been renewed for another season.
Liam Hemsworth took to Instagram on Saturday with some big news for fans of Netflix fantasy series “The Witcher”.
“As a ‘Witcher’ fan I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia,” wrote Hemsworth, revealing that he’d be stepping into the role inhabited by Henry Cavill for the show’s first three seasons.
“Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure,” Hemsworth continued. “Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into ‘The Witcher’ world.”
Cavill responded by sharing his own Instagram post, confirming that he was exiting the show.
“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4,” Cavill wrote.
“In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men,” he continued.
“Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find,” Cavill concluded.
Today, Netflix announced that The Witcher will be back for a fourth season. However, it wasn’t all good news, as the streamer also confirmed that Henry Cavill will not be returning for season 4. Instead, Liam Hemsworth will be the new monster slayer, Geralt of Rivia.
Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the popular Witcher books first started airing in 2019 and quickly exploded in popularity, with many praising Henry Cavill’s stoic but charming take on the white-haired witcher himself, Geralt. Since that first season, The Witcher has become a bonafide franchise for Netflix, leading to more seasons, anime prequels, movies, and even a child-friendly spin-off. But the star of the original series won’t be sticking around as the fantasy franchise grows.
In a tweet posted earlier today, Netflix confirmed that Cavill will be stepping away from the role after season three of the Witcher airs…sometime in the future. Starting in season four, Liam Hemsworth will be joining the “Witcher family” and will wear the white wig and carry the cool swords as Geralt moving forward.
“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4,” said Cavill in a statement shared by Netflix.

Hemsworth, a Witcher fan himself, also shared a statement about the surprising news, saying that he’s been a fan of Cavill’s take on the character for years and that he was “inspired” by his performance and what he brought to the character.
“I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world,” said Hemsworth.
The initial reaction online has been…not great! Many fans are confused and upset to see Cavill leave the role. And while it’s likely he’s hanging up the swords and the medallion to replace it with a red cape and tights as he returns to the DCEU film franchise as Superman, I assume many Witcher fans will be saddened to see the nerdy actor leave the popular show. But hey, with all that DC money he can probably build an even cooler PC!
