  • Exclusive: Alex James reveals his honest thoughts on Liam Gallagher – and Blur’s reaction to Oasis tour

For most, a legacy as the bassist with Blur would be enough for one lifetime, yet Alex James has masterfully traded the neon lights of the Nineties for the rolling hills of the Cotswolds, reinventing himself as an award-winning cheesemaker, a vintner and the ultimate festival architect.

Today, his 200-acre farm, bought on a whim during his honeymoon with wife Claire more than two decades ago, serves as the headquarters for his latest ambitious venture.

Following the triumphant return of Oasis last year, Blur’s last reunion in 2023 and with a hunger for nostalgia that shows no signs of waning, Alex is now returning to the “goldmine” of his youth.

Alex James with his Blur bandmates Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon and Dave Rowntree in 2024

Taking the energy of the Big Feastival to a grander stage, he is bringing the symphonic sounds of Britpop to the Royal Albert Hall next month.

“When we played the big Pulp and Oasis bangers with the orchestra, the crowd was louder than the band!” Alex, 57, tells HELLO!. “Our Blur reunion was great, the Oasis tour went crackers last year and the Britpop period of music is a goldmine.

“So many songs seem to mean more to people now than they did when they were written. It was only after several meetings and many hours mulling in the bubble bath that we got the playlist down to four and a half hours of stuff we absolutely have to do.”

The show will include a “sprinkling of special guests” regionally, as well as Quadrophenia’s Phil Daniels, Reef’s Gary Stringer and Saffron of Republica.

“I’m not promising you Jarvis [Cocker], Damon [Albarn] or Liam [Gallagher],” he says, “but we’ll keep a few special guests up our sleeves and the orchestra gives their songs rocket fuel, especially as a lot of them have string and brass sections.”

    Blur vs. Oasis

Considering the rivalry between Blur and Oasis back in the 1990s, how does Alex feel about performing some of their songs? “I look back on that time now with nothing but fondness,” he reveals. “At the time, from my point of view, it was just a hoot. Liam is a truly great singer and they are great songs, so I’ll have ’em! I didn’t go to their recent gigs, but I’ve seen Liam a bunch of times over the years and never seen a bad show. I’m absolutely delighted for them, it’s been a global phenomenon. And just that reconciliation and happy ever after.

Wonderwall took me ages to crack, the bass line is really subtle and took a lot of work. I’ve had 30 years to learn all the Blur songs, so this is a whole load of new material to memorise. But it’s a real joy giving all this music some patient study and it’s been wonderful getting an appreciation of how loved the songs are, even by my kids and their mates.”

The buzz that Alex got from being back on the road with Blur for their reunion three years ago was one of the motivations behind Alex James’ Britpop Classical.

    Family affair

But it was also the fact that his five children, Geronimo, 21, twins Artemis and Galileo, 19, Sable, 17, and Beatrix, 15, all musicians themselves, loved seeing their dad on stage so much.

“It’d been eight years since the previous Blur tour, the longest time ever,” he explains. “Living on the farm and doing Feastival is all-consuming and the kids have been quite young. I was worried when Blur got back together that I wasn’t going to see them all summer. But they came to the first warm-up and were like: ‘Oh Dad! Wow!’

“At least one of them came to every single show. One of the twins, Artemis, came out to Japan and was like: ‘Dad, how are we ever going to go on holiday again after this?’ The greatest gift of being in Blur, other than music itself, was that opportunity to travel and see the world.”

Alex James’ Britpop Classical plays dates around the UK from March 11 to July 26.

  • Exclusive: Lisa Faulkner on family life with ‘gentleman’ husband John Torode and nomad daughter Billie, 19

It has been 21 years since Lisa Faulkner starred in the play The Vagina Monologues, and now the actress is heading back to the stage in the world premiere of the theatre production of Single White Female, based on the hit 1990s psychological thriller film.

Lisa, 53, who is known for her roles in Missing You and Holby City, for co-hosting John and Lisa’s Weekend Kitchen with her husband, the chef John Torode, and for winning Celebrity MasterChef in 2010, can’t wait to play single parent Allie opposite Kym Marsh‘s obsessed roommate Hedy.

    © Instagram
Lisa Faulkner spoke to HELLO! about her theatre comback in Single White Female

“I think we’ll have fun,” says Lisa in this exclusive interview with HELLO!. “I’m really looking forward to playing Allie, and playing that slightly psycho character will be great for Kym. I think she’ll do it brilliantly.

“We’ve met a couple of times and my best friend, Angela Griffin, has worked with her. Angela said: ‘You’re going to get on like a house on fire; she’s lovely.’”

The new play is a reimagining of the hit 1992 film and bestselling book by John Lutz, in which a lodger’s fixation unfolds into a sinister sequence of events. And as soon as Lisa saw the script, she was sold.

“It reads really fast and like a film, so I was excited about it,” she says. “I remember watching [the film] and thinking it was brilliant; I loved Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

The TV presenter and actress also discussed her marriage with ‘best friend’ John Torode

“What’s exciting is that [the scriptwriter] Rebecca Reid has brought it up to date. It’s in the world of social media and they’re older. It’s funny; the people who were my age when we watched it are all mums with late-teen daughters 1767598389.”

Lisa is a mother to a teenager herself: she adopted 19-year-old Billie as a baby with her former husband, the actor Chris Coghill. The actress says of Billie: “She hasn’t seen the film, but she has read it with me and she’ll come to see the play. It’s one of those plays where, if I wasn’t in it, I’d take her to see it.”

    Family life

Some of Lisa’s famous friends have plans to watch, too, including Angela Griffin and Amanda Holden. “They’ve got a separate WhatsApp group, because I’ve told them I don’t want to know when they’re coming,” she laughs.

Lisa’s 19-year-old daughter Billie has caught the travel bug

“I don’t want to be spotting them and for that to put me off. I’ll check my phone and see that they’re there afterwards.”

He’s my husband and my best mate. We really do support each other and hold each other’s hands through everything. He’s such a gentleman and so kind.

John, her husband of six years, will also be supporting her. “He’s been running through the lines with me. He’s so happy for me,” she says.

Living and working with the chef is “lovely, and I feel very lucky”, she adds. “He’s my husband and my best mate. We really do support each other and hold each other’s hands through everything. He’s such a gentleman and so kind.”

Lisa says husband John is her biggest champion

Billie still lives at home. However, Lisa says: “She goes travelling a lot. I don’t see her for weeks, then she’s back. She hasn’t left home quite yet, thank goodness.”

Like her mother, Billie is interested in acting. “I’m like: ‘No, keep away from the acting.’ I think it can be a great thing, though it’s very up and down. But if she wants to do it, she can.”

The UK tour of Single White Female opens at Brighton’s Theatre Royal on 9 January and runs until 13 June; swfonstage.com

  • Exclusive: Lesley Nicol reveals ‘exciting’ new chapter after Downton Abbey and the kindness of Highclere Castle’s owners after husband’s death

Lesley Nicol has opened up about her “exciting” new chapter after Downton Abbey, which ends with its third and final film, The Grand Finale, after 15 years. The actress, who plays the no-nonsense cook at the heart of the bustling downstairs kitchen, Mrs Patmore, sat down with HELLO! for an exclusive interview, this time in a luxury Mayfair hotel, where she opened up about landing a role she’s been waiting years for, finding love later in life and the kindness of Highclere Castle owners Lord and Lady Carnarvon after the death of her husband.

    Embracing a new chapter

As Downton closes its doors for the final time, Lesley is looking forward to swapping Mrs Patmore’s kitchen for London’s South Bank, having landed her first-ever role at the National Theatre in an adaptation of Noel Streatfeild’s beloved children’s novel, Ballet Shoes.

“I’m 72 and have waited a very long time to get offered a job at the National. I’ve always wanted to work there, so I’m thrilled,” the Manchester-born actress said.

“This is a new chapter and it’s a good one.”

Lesley is embracing a new stage in her life in other significant ways, too. It has been three years since the death of her husband, David Heald, a spiritual healer who died unexpectedly at the age of 76 in May 2022.

“Without my husband, it’s horrible. But this is a new chapter and it’s a good one,” said Lesley, who recently starred in ITV’s powerful four-part drama Mr Bates vs The Post Office, playing real-life subpostmistress Pam Stubbs, who was wrongly accused of theft. “I’m moving house, I’ve got a new job, I’m fit and well, so it’s exciting.”

After David passed away, Lesley was invited to spend Christmas at Hampshire’s Highclere Castle, which provides the spectacular backdrop to Downton Abbey, by its owners, Lord and Lady Carnarvon, who first welcomed the actress and her husband to stay there after she opened the village fete in 2015.

Lesley is starring in a new play at the National Theatre

“I was very touched by that, because we’re not intimate friends,” she recalled. “I thought: ‘That’s very brave; you could have this weeping woman for Christmas.’ Lady Carnarvon is very kind.”

“Things happen when they’re supposed to happen. Keep your heart and your mind open and see what’s coming next.”

    Finding love later in life

Just like her character in the drama, Lesley found love in later life, having met David when she was 50, at a reiki class he was teaching. Drawing parallels between Mrs Patmore’s romantic relationship with the local farmer, Mr Mason (played by Paul Copley), and her own, she said: “For her to experience love later in life is great, and of course, in my own life, it was equally a wonderful thing to happen. It’s lovely that she gets her new chapter with a lovely person.”

Lesley pictured with her husband David Keith Heald in 2020

Encouraging women not to give up on finding romance is something Lesley is passionate about. “I’ve spoken to women who go, ‘It just hasn’t happened for me,’ and I go, ‘Well, don’t listen to people saying, “You’re over 40, forget it!” Don’t listen to that; it’s not true,’” the actress said.

“Things happen when they’re supposed to happen, in my view. So keep your heart and your mind open and see what’s coming next.”

    Finding new passions

One of her surprising new discoveries is her passion for cooking. “I’m beginning to enjoy cooking a bit, ironically. It’s taken me a very long time,” she said, admitting that she’s “nowhere near” as skilled as Mrs Patmore.

“I don’t eat meat any more, so my mission is to try to make food that will make a meat-eater go: ‘That’s really nice.’”

She’s also working with a personal trainer named Vlad, who “takes no prisoners”. “It’s really serious weights and squats,” she said. “They’re horrible, hideous things, but it will make me stronger, so there’s less likelihood of falling. It’s tough, but he’s committed to making me more functional, physically.”

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale film still
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale comes to screens on 12 September

She may be closing the book on Downton, but Lesley has plenty of chapters to enjoy in her own life. “There are still wonderful possibilities and I never want to stop working,” she said. “I’m not going to retire, so if I’m allowed to keep going and doing a variety of things and I’m well enough to do it, bring it on.”

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is in cinemas from 12 September.

  • Exclusive photos: Lady Louise Windsor is supported by rumoured boyfriend Felix at championships before heading back to university

Lady Louise Windsor is continuing to compete in the National Carriage Driving Championships at the Ashfields Carriage and Polo Club and on Saturday, she was joined by her rumoured boyfriend, Felix da Silva-Clamp. Felix had seemingly been absent from the first day, but was on hand to cheer on the royal as she managed to get herself into a bronze medal position ahead of the competition’s final day, which will be on Sunday. Friday saw the dressage event, while Saturday was a marathon stage; the final stage will be the ‘cones’.

Speaking to HELLO!, an onlooker described Felix’s support for the royal with the student “cheering and clapping from the sidelines”. They added that Felix “did a fist pump as she went through the water” and was “keen to see [Lady Louise] progress in the sport.” Felix was also described as “protective” over his rumoured partner and that the duo had enjoyed a “nice lunch” together before the event.

On how the royal fared in the event, they said: “Lady Louise was elated, [she] broke into a lovely little grin afterwards. She’s now lying in third place, just has the cones tomorrow.” They continued: “They then watched the other competitors after Lady Louise’s event. No security, [they were] just a couple of fans, cheering competitors on, noting what they do.

They described the pair as being “mindful” of showing overt expressions of love, but that people could “tell they’re very close”. In response to Lady Louise’s parents, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, leaving the royal and Felix alone, the onlooker remarked: “[It’s nice to see them] getting on with their lives without that parental influence.”

Art collector Mana Jalalian’s epic Dubai loft apartment with panoramic views – see inside

Art collector Mana Jalalian couldn’t have found a better place in which to indulge her passion. With its immense windows framing the whole city skyline and offering endless natural light, her loft apartment in Dubai makes a spectacular exhibition space.

But while it’s filled with contemporary creations from around the globe – and especially from her beloved home country, Iran – what we see here is just the tip of the iceberg. In total, Mana has more than 400 works, which she shares in shows from Venice to Vancouver.

Art collector Mana Jalalian has opened the doors to her Dubai home

“My collection started modestly, but grew as my appreciation for art deepened. Each work represents a moment, a memory and a piece of the world’s heritage,” she says.

Born in Canada and brought up in Iran, Mana left at 19 to live first back in her country of birth and then Azerbaijan. She’s driven by a deep belief in the power of art to break down cultural barriers. Now settled in Dubai with her beloved Persian cat Mangool, she relishes the city’s vibrant international scene, where her professional talents as an interior designer are much in demand.

‘My collection started modestly, but grew as my appreciation for art deepened,’ she says

Mana’s own home environment reflects her dynamic, positive approach to life and the inner strength she has drawn on in her personal life to come through divorce and to conquer cancer. She’s determined to help others, too, through her many humanitarian projects, as she tells us here.

“Growing up in Iran, my interest was sparked by the magazines in my uncle’s architectural studio. I was fascinated by the possibilities within those pages. Later, every step of my education, from the lively art scene of Tehran to the structured and professional approach of Canada, was a springboard to cultivate a curiosity that transcends borders.”
