abilityJOBS.com Surveys “The Good, the Bad & the Ugly” of the 2016 Presidential Election

    Press Release

    Oct 14, 2016

abilityJOBS.com surveyed 40,000 job seekers with disabilities to ask the question, “Why Are You Voting?”

A survey unlike any other in its size, scope and domain, abilityJOBS.com founder, Chet Cooper, and team launched some of the most intrinsic questions to the career site’s immense pool of job seekers with disabilities – the purpose?  To discover what is compelling a practicing professional or active job-seeker to ‘get out to vote’ in this 2016 election.  With the contentious match-up of Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump in play, Cooper knew the voices of PWD’s was a crucial one to assess.

“We’ve dedicated ourselves to understanding the needs of unemployed people with disabilities (PWDs). This survey has brought a new level of awareness.”

Chet Cooper, Founder & Editor in Chief, Ability Magazine

The abilityJOBS team took a risk in asking their audience to speak up, especially in the unusual terrain of a campaign that has featured the controversial portrayal by Presidential candidate Donald Trump, of NEW YORK TIMES reporter, Serge F. Kovalevsky (who has cerebral palsy). Committing himself to put forth the opinions disabled workers play in the US GDP, Cooper said, “We’ve dedicated ourselves to understanding the needs of unemployed people with disabilities (PWDs). This survey has brought a new level of awareness.”  As the shepherd of the largest online source of employment resources for both corporations and PWDs, Cooper immediately saw the demand for INTEGRITY as a high note amongst the responses; “When you’re already expecting a lopsided playing field, the focus on ‘character’ and ‘trust’ becomes even more dynamic. It’s a game-changer – especially now.”

Interested in what unemployed PWDs were voting for in a President, questions ranged from Homeland security to Immigration. For instance, “Is it important for a President to make GOOD on their promises to create new jobs?”—readership resoundingly responded with a consensus of 85%.  Or “Do you feel the healthcare system is UGLY?”  “As far as BAD is concerned, we’ve seen quite a bit in this presidential race. PWDs make up the largest minority in the country, yet have been ignored as a significant voting power—56 million people can sway an election,” says Cooper.

EIKONIC Wins Consumer Health Category in Global Competition

    Press Release

    Jun 17, 2016

Melbourne-based Eikonic R&D Pty Ltd, “Eikonic” yesterday announced that it is the winner of $100K in a global competition initiated by a partnership between the Queensland Government and Johnson & Johnson Innovation. The competition was seeking novel and  disruptive human healthcare innovations to address unmet medical needs. The funding will assist EIKONIC in the development and commercialisation of its nanotechnology-inspired, preventive topical application for the treatment of gum disease.

At least half of the world’s population experiences some form of gum disease, a disease with links to many chronic non-communicable diseases, for example: diabetes, heart disease and arthritis. It is a huge market problem that hasn’t been solved. It affects the supporting structures around the teeth and, when not treated, can result in tooth loss. It affects quality of life as people can’t eat properly and may suffer from physical, psychological, and social disability.

Oral health is a basic human right and we believe we have a solution for the prevention of gum disease; a solution, which may positively impact other chronic diseases and significantly reduce dental and medical costs worldwide. Every man, woman and child should have access to these products.

Ingrid Rodriguez, Founder & Managing Director

Eikonic’s Founder and MD Ingrid Rodriguez said, “We are extremely grateful to the Queensland Government and Johnson & Johnson Innovation for their commitment to human healthcare innovation and support of our company. Oral health is a basic human right and we believe we have a solution for the prevention of gum disease; a solution, which may positively impact other chronic diseases and significantly reduce dental and medical costs worldwide. Every man, woman and child should have access to these products. This funding will help us deliver on our objective of an easy to use, daily applied, topical application, avoiding the need for conventional complex, costly and invasive procedures. As a state and country, we need to focus on innovation through research and development in order to ensure that Australian research and innovation remains at the forefront of global health solutions. This funding reflects a public and private partnership approach to supporting research and development.”

This latest funding represents a significant milestone for this social enterprise company headquartered in Melbourne, Australia.

Eikonic will work with a number of Queensland-based academic partners and contract research organisations to help further validate the technology. This work will accelerate the development of the technology, thus bringing it closer to the patients that need it the most.

    About EIKONIC R&D PTY LTD

EIKONIC R&D PTY LTD is a Melbourne-based company developing nanotechnology-based compounds for the prevention of oral diseases, in particular gum disease and tooth decay. The company’s vision is to benefit human wellbeing through oral healthcare by driving improvements through the delivery of innovative oral healthcare products.

    About Gum Disease

Gum disease impacts fifty to ninety percent of global population and prevalence increases with age. Current treatments take the form of physically scraping the tooth and root surface as well as surgery, which are mostly invasive, painful and expensive. Therapeutics exist in the form of gels, rinses, paste and antibiotics, but they don’t solve the problem. The global treatment market for gum disease is approximately worth USD $2B. It’s a treatment market that doesn’t address prevention.

ICBioethics Earns Pittsburgh Business Ethics Award

    Press Release

    Feb 26, 2016

The Institute of Consultative Bioethics (ICBioethics) has been named the winner of a Pittsburgh Business Ethics Award in the Small Business category.

The 15th Annual Pittsburgh Business Ethics Awards (PBEA) were presented by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Society of Financial Service Professionals during the PBEA Awards Ceremony and Luncheon Banquet at the Omni William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday, February 24. Co-presenters were the David Berg Center for Ethics and Leadershipat the University of Pittsburgh, the Rotary Club of Pittsburgh, and the Allegheny Conference on Community Development.

“We believe exemplary organizations are those that clearly convey their values, then put them into action visibly and consistently.”

    Dr. Kathy Detar Gennuso, CEO

The awards are designed to recognize U.S. companies that demonstrate a firm commitment to ethical practices in their day-to-day operations, philosophies, and response to crises and challenges. ICBioethics’ CEO, Dr. Kathy Detar Gennuso, commented, “We are very honored to receive this award focused on business ethics.” During the awards ceremony, it was noted that the company’s name contains the word “ethics.” Dr. Gennuso commented on this, “Indeed, it’s all part of the broader umbrella of ethics, a set of moral principles to guide one’s behavior. In our case, our product EthAssist® helps healthcare professionals learn more about or review principles and issues related to bioethics, sometimes referred to as clinical or medical ethics. More important, we want EthAssist to help users also bridge from the theory to the practical application of bioethics, like being able to demonstrate respect for patient autonomy and patient rights, or understanding what to do when conflicts of interest arise. We also look at organizational ethics in healthcare facilities such as hospitals, academic organizations, and hospice facilities, as that plays a big role in developing a culture of ethical behavior.”

ICBioethics’ product and services involve bioethics, but the PBEA award pertains to the business ethics within the company itself, especially how it relates to its customers, employees, business associates, and the community at large. Accepting the award on behalf of the company, COO Rich Gennuso stated, “Our business ethics are measured in part by how we work with our customers. When we formed the company in 2011, our goal was to make every client into a referenceable account who would actually see our business ethics in action.” He added, “In our team meetings, when evaluating approaches to a particular challenge, we still always ask ourselves, ‘What is the ethical thing to do?’ It’s actually part of the team discussion.”

During the ceremony, several speakers commented on the importance of moving beyond the focus of what “not to do” towards building a culture of “what is ethical to do.” “We couldn’t agree more!” stated Dr. Gennuso. “That’s why our company was formed, and that’s what we do internally as an organization and what we strive to achieve with our clients.”

Each year hundreds of firms are nominated. Applications are received in the fall in three categories: small, medium, and large business. Then three finalists are selected in each category at the beginning of each year, and the winners are announced at the awards ceremony. ICBioethics was nominated by Debbie Schlaegle, Director of Business Development at Clearview Federal Credit Union. She commented, “I get a sense of our business members’ ethical standards as we work on business plans and finances, and I’ve been nominating outstanding organizations for the award for several years. I am delighted that one of my nominees was selected for the award this year, and I think it’s a reflection of the exceptional businesses that choose to partner with Clearview. We’re happy to serve local businesses like ICBioethics that value their employees, their work and their community as much as we do.”

“We believe exemplary organizations are those that clearly convey their values, then put them into action visibly and consistently,” Dr. Gennuso said. “Without that happening, morale can drop and motivation lag, and soon the execution of the obligations and responsibilities of the entire organization are negatively impacted, especially under rapidly changing conditions that naturally occur when growing a business. Because we wanted ICBioethics to be exemplary, our first task was to set a solid foundation internally so that we could assure ourselves, as well as our clients, that we were committed to keeping ethics firmly rooted at the center of our organization.”
