    Best Documentaries On HBO Max

    [ad_1]

At the end of the workday, I like to shut my laptop screen and transition to my other screen times. Yes, as embarrassing as it is to say that, we all do it. You spend all day staring hard at your computer, just to end up looking at your phone and TV all night.

It’s not the healthiest way of living, but if I’m being honest it’s what we do. While we should aim to minimize our screen time as much as humanly possible, it’s tough when the entire planet is run by Apple. Suddenly, we’ve all developed an emotional attachment to our screens.

During the pandemic, documentaries soared in popularity. We’d run out of shows to watch, tired of the endless reality television loop, and turned to true crime. Podcasts like Serial, Morbid, and Crime Junkie all followed famous cases of serial killers, thieves, and grotesque examples of inhumanity.

And, as someone with FOMO who’s fallen victim to the grip of pop culture and constantly needs to stay in the know, I’ve done my due diligence, my field research. I’ve combed through days worth of documentaries searching for the best of the best.

A good documentary contains at least one of these elements: shock factor, eye-witness testimony, and at least one moment worthy of a viral clip. Take Netflix’s Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened…which became an overnight meme thanks to Fyre Fest producer Andy King detailing how he was willing to offer oral sex in exchange for Evian Water to save the festival.

What’s The Best Streaming Service For Documentaries?

It’s about getting the people talking, and no streaming service makes a better documentary than HBO Max (more recently known as just “Max.”). Max somehow knows exactly what the people want to see and that’s…drama.

Since there are so many documentaries out there, you’ve got to find a way to keep people interested. We already know many of the infamous serial killers like Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer, so it takes true storytelling to get our attention.

HBO Max does something special: finding lesser known stories, nabbing exclusive interviews, and catching the story at the right time. Sure, Netflix shows you what’s already happened, but somehow Max gets ahead of the story every time.

The most shocking and relevant docus are on HBO Max, so if you’re ready to binge watch something that will have your jaw on the floor…I’ve got you covered.

Here are my top 4 documentaries on HBO Max that you can stream right now!

Love Has Won: The Cult Of Mother God

Have you ever witnessed such ludicrous, outlandish behavior that it almost makes you laugh? Welcome to Love Has Won, a cult led by the late Amy Carlson known as “Mother God,” “Mother” for short.

Mother claimed she’d been reincarnated 534 times as notable figures like Jesus, Marilyn Monroe, and Cleopatra. She promised to lead 144,000 people into the 5th dimension. Not only that, but Donald Trump was her father in a past life and she frequently speaks to Robin Williams…who’s no longer present in the “physical.”

In May 2021 Amy Carlson died due to: anorexia, chronic colloidal silver ingestion, and acute alcohol abuse. But the cult believed she had finally ascended. Even pushing colloidal silver as the magic elixir, this documentary truly has everything.

    BS High

This documentary answers the question: “What if you went to high school and it wasn’t real?” From 2019-2021, Bishop Sycamore High School advertised themselves as a sports training academy that would forge young men into 5-star D1 recruits for football.

The team went on to play some of the best high school football teams. But after mounting hype around their players…people soon realized that these boys were far from D1 recruits. During the 2021 season, they somehow landed the fourth toughest schedule in the nation…and none of the teams they played were in Ohio.

Led by coach and BS High founder Roy Johnson, BS High was slated to play the best: IMG Academy. After facing odd scheduling and huge blowouts, IMG romped BS, 58-0. From there, Roy Johnson was exposed for hundreds of lies: essentially creating a fake high school and none of the players received even a GED.

Featuring first-hand interviews from Roy Johnson and the players themselves, this docu is both crazy and sad.

The Jinx: The Life and Deaths Of Robert Durst

If you’re going to watch one documentary on this list, make it this one. Robert Durst is a real estate heir who had never cooperated with a journalist before. Durst was so enamored with director of The Jinx Andrew Jarecki’s work that he offered to sit down and do an interview with Andrew.

Durst’s story is intriguing because he was surrounded by death. His wife, Kathie, had been missing since 1982. His friend, writer Susan Berman, was killed execution-style in 2000. His neighbor, Morris Black, was found dismembered in 2001. The one common denominator? Robert Durst.

As Durst is interviewed over the years, you see the conniving mega-millionaire evade any consequence as evidence piles up against him. Clearly this guy is guilty…which was solidified when he was arrested a day before the finale came out. But the final twist will have shocked to the core.

Plus, The Jinx part two comes out April 21.

Quiet On Set: The Dark Side Of Kids TV

One of the most recent viral documentaries hits close to home. Growing up, I was a devout Nickelodeon viewer. My nights ended with The Amanda Show, Drake & Josh, iCarly, and more. Over the years, fans have closely watched as many former beloved child actors have had very public breakdowns. And it’s all being explained now by HBO.

Quiet On Set exposes Nickelodeon producer Dan Schneider’s treatment of employees and cast members throughout his tenure at the network. It includes horrifying accounts from cast members such as Drake Bell, who details the sexual abuse he encountered from dialogue coach, Brian Peck.

Dan Schneider’s downfall has been building since the glory days of Nickelodeon, and it all peaks with this documentary.

Quadruple Stack On HBO Max Membership Purchase – Doctor Of Credit

    [ad_1]

    The Offer

There’s currently a quadruple stack on HMO Max annual membership:

    1. Through April 9, 2024, HBO dropped the prices on their annual Max subscription.
      • 1-Year With Ads $69.99 (Stream on 2 devices at once; Full HD video resolution)
      • 1-Year Ad-Free $104.99 (Stream on 2 devices at once; Full HD video resolution; 30 downloads to watch on the go)
      • 1-Year Ultimate Ad-Free $139.99 (Stream on 4 devices at once; 4K Ultra HD video quality as available; Dolby Atmos immersive audio as available; 100 downloads to watch on the go)
    2. If you spend $99 or more, be sure to put the charge on a card with a special cashback offer. Currently a lot of us can get $25-$35 if you make the purchase using a Chase card or $25 if you make the purchase using an Amex card which has the linked offer for HBO Max.
    3. Go through a shopping portal before signing up. Rakuten is currently offering $20/2,000 with the Ultimate yearly plan and $15/1,500 with the regular ad-free plan.
    4. If you have Sam’s Club membership, you can get 15% Sam’s cash back on an annual Max sub if you pay with a linked card. Sam’s Plus members get an additional 20% of whatever the cash back comes to. That will end up being 18% cashback total. Make sure to activate the bonus offer in your sam’s bonus offers account and link the Amex or Chase card you intend to pay with. That’s all, this isn’t a shopping portal, just pay with your linked card (don’t use Paypal or similar if that’s an option, enter your credit card).

    The Fine Print

    • Important: After your discounted subscription period, your subscription will automatically renew each year at the then-current subscription price for the yearly plan that you signed up for. If you cancel your subscription, you will continue to have access to Max for the remainder of time you have already paid for And so I’d recommend cancelling immediately after signup.
    • There is no refund or credits for partial years, FYI.
    • Existing Max customers currently enrolled in a Max yearly plan via max.com cannot apply an Offer to your existing plan, but you may switch to one of the other yearly plans to take advantage of an Offer.
    • These offers are for (a) new, returning and existing customers via max.com, (b) new and returning customers through the following participating subscription providers: Roku, Google Play and Apple and (c) new customers through Amazon Appstore.

    Our Verdict

Altogether it’s possible for someone to get the ad-free version for $105+tax and get back the following:

    • $35 on their Sapphire Reserve card
    • $15/1,500 from Rakuten which some people will value at $20+
    • Around $15-$19 from the Sam’s Club deal

  • The Last of Us Spawns a Second Season (of Pedro Pascal)

The Last of Us Spawns a Second Season (of Pedro Pascal)

    [ad_1]

    The Last of Us.
    Photo: Liane Hentscher/HBO

“I am your cool, slutty daddy,” The Last of Us star Pedro Pascal famously said on the red carpet for HBO’s latest blockbuster series, based on the postapocalyptic video game. Weeks later, the network renewed The Last of Us for a second season. Is there a correlation between Pascal thirst and a renewal? Maybe so! The first season, which aired its harrowing finale last March, was largely a faithful adaptation of the original game, with a few notable exceptions, and ended in the same spot as the game. But HBO is like a hungry zombie wanting more, more, more! The show’s co-creators, Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) and Neil Druckmann (co-president of Naughty Dog, the video-game development company behind TLOU), haven’t been super-forthcoming with details about Joel (Pascal) and Ellie’s (Bella Ramsey) televisual fates in the months following its official renewal. Still, it seems like high time we compiled everything we do know about the upcoming second season, and you won’t even have to threaten us with a switchblade to get the info.

Even with all the cool, slutty daddy thirst, record viewership may be the main reason. Episode one has surpassed 22 million viewers domestically, up nearly five times from its January 2023 premiere audience. The second episode did even better by about a million viewers, tallying an audience of 5.7 million across HBO Max and linear telecast platforms, a 22 percent jump. It was the largest week-two audience growth for any HBO Original drama series in the history of the network. The critical darling tells the story of smuggler Joel (Pascal) who must deliver an important child (played by Bella Ramsey, not Grogu) across America after a fungal outbreak created a horde of cannibalistic zombie-esque people-creatures. Gabriel Luna, Anna Torv, Nico Parker, Murray Bartlett, Nick Offerman, Melanie Lynskey, and Storm Reid also star.

Kaitlyn Dever of Booksmart fame joins the series as one of several prominent new characters, Deadline reported on January 9. She plays Abby, a soldier seeking vengeance on those who harmed her loved ones. “Our casting process for season two has been identical to season one: We look for world-class actors who embody the souls of the characters in the source material,” said Mazin and Druckmann in a statement. On January 10, Variety confirmed Young Mazino of Beef and SZA music-video fame will play Jesse, “a pillar of his community who puts everyone else’s needs before his own, sometimes at terrible cost.” “Young is one of those rare actors who is immediately undeniable the moment you see him,” the co-creators said. They’re talking about his face card.

Another round of casting announcements dropped on March 1. Per Variety, Top Gun’s Danny Ramirez will be taking on another military role and star as Manny, a loyal soldier whose “sunny outlook belies the pain of old wounds and a fear that he will fail his friends when they need him most.” Ariela Barer will play a young doctor named Mel whose commitment to saving lives is challenged by “the realities of war and tribalism,” Tati Gabrielle will play a military medic named Nora struggling with past “sins,” and Spencer Lord will play a “gentle soul” named Owen who is “trapped in a warrior’s body, condemned to fight an enemy he refuses to hate.” Truly, none of these characters can catch a break.

Yes and no. The Last of Us: Part II is an even more expansive game than the first, so the story of the second game will be split over multiple seasons. How many? There’s no way to know. When pressed on how many seasons the game adaptation will take, Mazin and Druckmann went cold. “You have noted correctly that we will not say how many,” Mazin told GQ. “But more than one is factually correct.” The second game (SPOILER ALERT) largely takes place four years after the original game, which gives quite a bit of leeway if Mazin and Druckmann want to build that story out. Plus fans of the game know something seismic happens relatively early on in the second game’s plot — the kind of thing that feels like a season ender, rather than a season opener. At this point, it seems like the only thing we know is what we don’t know.

From a bird’s-eye view, Mazin and Druckmann seem pretty happy with the first season of the show and ready to give another installment along those same lines. “Our goal remains exactly what it was for the first season, which is to deliver a show that makes fans happy,” Mazin said to GQ. Still, the creators acknowledged some things season two could do to improve on the first. The biggest has to do not with plot but with setting. Some, including Stephen King, have noted that Joel and Ellie’s cross-country road trip doesn’t really feel … cross-country at times. That’s partially due to the fact that the entire first season was filmed in Canada. “My goal is to do better next season, now that we’ve learned some lessons,” Mazin said in a press conference, according to TV Line. “Every now and then [in season one] you get a little bit of an ‘Oh, it’s Canada,’ when we don’t want it to be Canada.”

Oh, you’re so impatient. Players of the game were forced to wait seven full years between the first and second installments to learn the fates of Joel and Ellie, but it seems unlikely that TV watchers will have to wait anywhere near that long. The GQ interviewer references audiences needing to wait “two years” to find out the fate of the main characters, which neither creator disputes. Just for context, season one began filming in July 2021 and arrived on HBO last January. If they replicate that timeline, we can expect season two in fall 2024 at the earliest. Still, Druckmann noted to GQ that, with this season, “I find that the process is easier.” So maybe they’ll speed it up a little? The Hollywood Reporter has reported that the show is preparing to begin production in the spring, with a likely 2025 premiere. As long as nobody has to wait seven years again, we’ll take what we can get.

  • A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight Release Date Rumors: When Is It Coming Out?

A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight Release Date Rumors: When Is It Coming Out?

    [ad_1]

Based on the Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas by George R. R. Martin, A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight is an upcoming fantasy action drama series. A spin-off to Game of Thrones, the series takes place a century before the events of the original series and seven decades after House of the Dragon. The plot revolves around the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall, a hedge knight, and his squire, Egg or Aegon, a Targaryen prince. If you are wondering when the series is coming out, this is what we have discovered.

Here’s all the A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight release date information we know so far, and all the details on when it is coming out.

Is there A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight release date?

A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight’s release date is expected to arrive by late 2025.

In January 2021, various outlets reported that a TV adaptation of Martin’s novellas was in early development at HBO. The network officially greenlit the series in April 2023. David Zaslov, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, revealed during the February 2024 earnings call that the show was in pre-production. He also stated that the show will premiere sometime in late 2025.

Tales of Dunk and Egg has three entries as of February 2024. The Hedge Knight came out in 1998, The Sworn Sword in 2003, and The Mystery Knight in 2010. So, the viewers can expect the upcoming series to have at least three seasons. A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight is one of the three GoT spin-offs to enter pre-production after Bloodmoon and House of the Dragon. In an April 2023 blog post, Martin explained why the series isn’t titled Dunk and Egg.

“The working title will be A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS: THE HEDGE KNIGHT,” the renowned author explained. “Whether that will be the final title, I can’t say for sure… beyond saying that no, it won’t be called TALES OF DUNK & EGG or THE ADVENTURES OF DUNK & EGG or DUNK & EGG or anything along those lines. I love Dunk and I love Egg, and I know that fans refer to my novellas as ‘the Dunk & Egg stories,’ sure, but there are millions of people out there who do not know the stories and the title needs to intrigue them too. If you don’t know the characters, DUNK & EGG sounds like a sitcom. LAVERNE & SHIRLEY. ABBOTT & COSTELLO. BEAVIS & BUTTHEAD. So, no. We want ‘knight’ in the title. Knighthood and chivalry are central to the themes of these stories.”

HBO has not revealed the cast of A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight yet. The production will reportedly begin in the spring of 2024. Ira Parker will serve as the creator, with Martin attached to the production as writer and executive producer.

This date is an estimation based on the information we have at the time of this writing.

Where is A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight coming out?

A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight is anticipated to come out on HBO and HBO Max on late 2025.

This is because the network is developing the series like other projects in the Game of Thrones franchise. ComingSoon will provide an update when the network announces the show’s exact release date.

The official synopsis for A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight reads:

“A century before the events of “Game of Thrones”, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”

  • Max Drops the First Look at the Long-Awaited ‘Turtles All the Way Down’ Adaptation

Max Drops the First Look at the Long-Awaited ‘Turtles All the Way Down’ Adaptation

    [ad_1]

The long-awaited adaptation of John Green‘s Turtles All the Way Down is finally becoming a reality after finding a home on Max. Shortly after its Max release window was confirmed, the streamer dropped the first look images for the film.

Turtles All the Way Down has actually been in development for close to seven years. It’s no surprise that Fox 2000 quickly nabbed the film rights, optioning the book just months after its release, given the novel’s huge success. The book debuted at number 1 on The New York Times Best Sellers list for YA books and received high praise from critics for raising mental health awareness and providing an accurate depiction of what it’s like living with OCD and anxiety.

Unfortunately, production was delayed when Fox 2000 Pictures was acquired by Disney. The film spent several years switching studios before finally landing at New Line Cinema and Max in 2022. Although this development allowed production to commence, fans were concerned when updates trailed off for over a year after filming wrapped in June 2022. Fortunately, Green recently shared some exciting news, providing a final confirmation that Turtles All the Way Down is definitely still happening.

Max drops the first look images for Turtles All the Way Down

Recently, Green took to Instagram to share some big news about Turtles All the Way Down. In a short video, he admits that he had doubts about whether the movie would actually be released despite being completed. However, he finally has confirmation that the movie is coming, and it will arrive on Max later this year.

Shortly after Green’s announcement, Max released the first-look photos of Turtles All the Way Down. The three images show Isabela Merced, Cree Cicchino, and Felix Mallard in character for the first time. One image teases a kiss between Merced’s and Felix’s characters, another is a closeup of Merced, and the final one sees Merced and Cicchino posing in front of a mirror.

    • Isabela Merced as Aza Holmes and Felix Mallard as Davis Pickett in Turtles All the Way Down
    • Isabela Merced as Aza Holmes in Turtles All the Way Down
    • Isabela Merced as Aza Holmes and Cree Cicchino as Daisy Ramirez looking in a mirror in Turtles All the Way Down

Merced is slated to lead the film as the main protagonist, Aza Holmes. Turtles All the Way Down will mark her third major movie release in 2024, as she is also set to star in Madame Web and Alien: Romulus. Starring opposite Merced is Ginny & Georgia star Felix Mallard as Aza’s love interest, Davis Pickett. Meanwhile, Cree Cicchino and Maliq Johnson will appear as Daisy Ramirez and Mychal Turner, respectively, Aza’s best friends. Scrubs star Judy Reyes has been tapped to portray Aza’s mom, Gina, while Miles Ekhardt portrays Davis’ little brother, Noah. Rounding out the cast are Poorna Jagannathan as Dr. Singh, J. Smith-Cameron as Professor Abbott, and Hannah Marks as Holly.

Plotwise, Turtles All the Way Down is expected to follow Green’s book quite closely. The story centers on Aza, a high school student with OCD and anxiety, who tries to find a missing billionaire to secure a handsome cash reward. However, the mission leads her to the billionaire’s son, Davis, with whom she soon starts a romantic relationship while still probing the mystery of his father’s disappearance. The romance, though, leads her to question if she truly can live a fulfilling life with meaningful relationships while managing her OCD.

Green’s book was a delicate, hopeful, and, at times, gut-wrenching depiction of what it’s like living with mental health disorders and learning to manage them effectively. If Turtles All the Way Down proves to be a faithful adaptation, it could provide meaningful representation for those who see themselves reflected in Aza.

  • Is True Detective Season 4 Based on a True Story? Real Events, Facts & People

Is True Detective Season 4 Based on a True Story? Real Events, Facts & People

    [ad_1]

True Detective Season 4 (also known as True Detective: Night Country) is an anthology crime drama series that has gained acclaim for its atmospheric storytelling, complex characters, and exploration of dark philosophical themes. Each season features a new cast, and Season 4 follows Liz Danvers, who investigates a case of sudden disappearance. So, is there a possibility that True Detective: Night Country is based on a true story, and are there any real events and facts that we can expect to see this season?

Is True Detective Season 4 based on a true story?

No, True Detective Season 4 is not completely based on a true story. However, reports suggest that there have been two real-life mysteries that served as an inspiration for the show. That said, it is important to note that only the primary setting of these incidents was picked up by the filmmakers, and everything else that unfolds is fictional.

True Detective Season 4’s real events and facts explained

Their first inspiration is the Mary Celeste ship incident that occurred in 1872 when a whole crew disappeared out of the blue and an abandoned ship was found floating near the Azores Islands. The second one involves a group of Russian explorers who were hiking in the Ural Mountains in 1950. They were found dead outside their camps, and somehow, it seemed like they had cut their way out of their tents. An avalanche was blamed for their demise, but most were still sceptical of the actual reason.

The real people behind True Detective Season 4’s characters

The characters in True Detective Season 4 are fictional, and inspired by most archetypes. However, it does bring back the cynical and nihilistic touch of Season 1, which was a trait of Rust Cohle, a beloved fictional detective. The show has two strong female leads, and they are extremely well-written.

Is Liz Danvers a real person?

Liz Danvers is a created character, and according to Jodie Foster, who plays her, she is an “Alaskan Karen.” She struggles with her personal life and is protective of the people she loves, but she also seems to be pessimistic due to her inner turmoil.

Why I'm Not Falling For Those Streaming Bundle 'Deals' — And You Shouldn't Either. | Entrepreneur

    [ad_1]

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

Ask any movie buff, and they’ll tell you that “The Godfather Part III” was by far the worst of the mafia trilogy. But one line in that movie came to my mind when I saw this article about new “bundling” deals that are popping up from Verizon, Netflix, Disney and others: “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!” That’s the way I feel about all those bundling deals.

I shouldn’t admit this publicly because it’s so embarrassing, but my cable bill with Xfinity was about $370 per month — yes, $370! Sure, I’ve got high-speed internet and the plan with all the channels and it’s on two TVs. But come on — I’m old enough to remember the days when TV was actually free, just as long as you didn’t mind watching “Hee Haw” and repeats of “Gilligan’s Island” in the afternoons.

Sure, there are numerous “bundling” plans offered by my cable provider. But they’re confusing, and I’ve resisted them. So, in the end, like most others, I’ve just shrugged my shoulders and avoided messing with the status quo. This is precisely what Verizon, Netflix, Disney and all the others want me to do: nothing. Instead, they want to confuse consumers like me. But enough is enough.

  • The Deceptively Cozy Joys of Julia Child and Max’s ‘Julia’

The Deceptively Cozy Joys of Julia Child and Max’s ‘Julia’

    [ad_1]

Before the feminist movement really began to develop its momentum, there was a moment where Julia wasn’t certain who she was going to be, where she wasn’t always a champion of the right things. If we go into a third season—and we hope we will—I’m sure it’ll be complicated for all of the characters on our show, but WGBH itself is going to really start to change much more quickly. And everyone’s going to have to either get on board, or be left behind.

Sarah Lancashire and David Hyde Pierce in season two of ‘Julia.’©Seacia Pavao

I find it puzzling when people refer to the show as a “comfort watch,” because that sometimes feels at odds with what’s actually going on. This season deals with issues of equality, of access to contraception. In the finale, characters are working to thwart the FBI! How does the “cozy” moniker sit with you?

Goldfarb: I attribute it to the marriage, actually. There’s something about Julia and Paul’s love of each other and lust for each other that I think is very aspirational. And the food. But there’s something about them that I think makes people feel warm. There’s conflict in the marriage. The whole first season she had this big secret, and now in the second season starting with episode four, she has a secret again. But she’s keeping the secret to protect him, and then ultimately the secret comes out, and they get even closer. So I think that’s why people think the show is cozy and warm and kind.

But I agree with you. Episode five, where Paul’s twin brother comes, that’s an example of Julia in all her contradictions. She lies about the origins of the show and when Alice calls her on it, she says, “My brand is honesty,” when she’s just made something up. So we love leaning into Julia as an amazing, complicated, three-dimensional woman. So thank you for saying it’s not just cozy.

Keyser: We are very committed to the idea that the whole thing feels light as a feather, that it lands with weight, but you are not noticing because it has a breezy quality. The kind of person that Julia surrounded herself with is full of optimism about the idea that tomorrow could be better than today. They’re all open to the possibilities of life, even when it’s difficult.

If there’s anything that Daniel and I in the writers’ room focus on all the time, it’s how do you tell a potentially dramatic story, but—not to keep mixing metaphors—that on the inside just feels like a soufflé.

  • The Ending of 'The Gilded Age' Season 2 Changed the Game for Everyone

The Ending of 'The Gilded Age' Season 2 Changed the Game for Everyone

    [ad_1]

Max’s The Gilded Age season 2 is officially over. They packed a lot of twists and turns into that finale, so let’s go over what it means for our favorite characters.

We love the glitz and glamour of The Gilded Age. There’s something about women warring over who has the best opera house while wearing over-the-top dresses that is a salve for my soul. Of course, there are other low-stakes dramas to enjoy. Who will everyone sit with during the tennis match in Newport? Will Bertha Russell finally find a maid who knows how to handle a tiara? And what, exactly, did the new Mrs. Winterton do before she married into old money? Although I am not sure how well The Gilded Age handled topics like Peggy going to the South or the union strikes, the show gave us plenty of rich people’s problems to obsess over. It’s time to unpack everything that happened in the last episode and how that will change the wealthy society of New York.

***SPOILERS AHEAD for The Gilded Age season 2 finale***

The Russells and the Opera War

Season 2 of The Gilded Age focused on the ostentatious Opera Wars between the old money Academy of Music and the new Metropolitan Opera. New money queen Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) waged a societal war against old money led by Mrs. Astor (Donna Murphy). It came down to both opera houses opening on the same night. Many undecided wealthy went where they thought they would see the Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb). Those with any brains picked the Met because Bertha always wins. The Duke showed up, the Met was full, and the Academy was almost empty. Bertha won and shifted the center of upper-crust society. We knew she could do it.

But how did Bertha convince the Duke to pick her over the money and society offered by Mrs. Astor? Although it wasn’t explicitly said, many, including Bertha’s husband George (Morgan Spector), suspect Bertha offered her daughter Gladys’ (Taissa Farmiga) hand in marriage to the Duke. It will be an interesting point to play out since Gladys seems to have no romantic interest in the Duke. Earlier in the season, George offered to support Gladys’s choice of a husband since he wanted her to marry for love. Will this pit the two Russell parents against each other? George will also have his hands full with trying to outsmart the unions and appease other robber barons. If anyone can walk that tightrope, it is George.

The future of the Van Rhijn household

Of all the families in The Gilded Age, the Van Rhijn and Brook household may have had the wildest ride this season. Matriarch Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) usually has a tight rein on everything happening in her household. This season, she had to go through her niece Marian working as a teacher and getting engaged. Agnes’s spinster sister Ada (Cynthia Nixon) found love and got married, only for her husband to die.

The biggest drama occurred when Agnes’s son Oscar (Blake Ritson) lost most of the family money after being conned by Maud Beaton. A lawyer informs Agnes she must sell her house and get rid of most of the staff to survive on their limited means. Just as things looked grim for the house, an unexpected twist happened. Ada’s late husband had a vast fortune that he left to her. Now Agnes doesn’t need to sell the house and “nothing has to change.” Except, as Marion pointed out, Ada would now be in charge of the servants since she would be paying their salaries. On the surface, things will look the same in the Van Rhijn household. But Agnes will now technically be number two to her sister, something she’s never had to deal with before.

Some hope for the van Rhijn extended family

Marion had been unsure about her quick engagement to Cousin Dashiell (David Furr). She confirmed her doubts when she realized he was still in love with his deceased wife. So she ended things as cleanly as possible. This will hopefully be a good move for her, so she can figure out what path she wants to take in life. She also ended up kissing her friend Larry Russell (Harry Richardson). Good for you, Marion.

At least John “Jack” Trotter, a footman for the house, may have a bright future ahead of him. Throughout the season, he’s worked on improving how his alarm clock worked. The other staff members, and Agnes, supported Jack in his endeavor. Eventually, he received a patent on his escape wheel design and has plans to go into business with Larry Russell. He might turn into one of those rags-to-riches stories that America loves so much.

We want the best for Peggy Scott

Peggy Scott (Denée Benton) went through an emotional journey this season. Her son, who she thought was dead, ended up being alive. Except he sadly died of an illness before she could meet him. Peggy journeyed to the South with her newspaper boss and returned ready to be an activist. Getting her parents involved with her activism surrounding the Black schools proved to be good for all of them. Their relationships seem to be moving in a positive direction. Although her writing career is going great and she’s making a difference, she quit due to her romantic feelings for her boss. Her job at the van Rhijn house seems secure, but Peggy deserves to be a renowned writer. Maybe her dreams will come true when she finishes her book.

We don’t have confirmation on a season 3 for The Gilded Age, but the season ended in a way that another season would be warranted and welcomed. We need more silly hats!
