    When Kenya Barris announced a reimagining of The Wizard of Oz with Dorothy in Inglewood, social media slammed the unwanted Wiz-ish update.

    Whether viewers like it or not, the You People writer and director stays booked and busy. The prolific filmmaker discussed a long slate of upcoming projects at the Sundance Film Festival with the Variety Studio presented by Audible. The news of Barris’ plans to remake The Wizard of Oz seemingly broke the internet with criticisms and clapbacks.

    In Barris’ Black AF spin on the classic film, Dorothy is from Inglewood like Barris. She “lives in the Bottoms,” a large apartment complex also featured on Snowfall.

    “The original ‘Wizard of Oz’ took place during the Great Depression and it was about self-reliance and what people were going through. I think this is the perfect time to switch the characters and talk about what someone imagines their life could be,” Barris said.

    “It’s ultimately a hero’s journey, someone thinks something’s better than where they’re at, and they go and realize that where they’re at is where they should be. I want people to be proud and happy about where they’re from. But I want the world to take a look at it and I hope that will come through.”

    Barris followed up by proactively addressing the decision to continue mining existing classics with “a different point of view.”

    “I’m still a believer in IP. I think I get s**t for it sometimes, but I believe that the idea of some of those great stories – stories are all told again and again and again. So having the opportunity to take some of those IPs and tell them from a different point of a view is a gift that I hopefully keep getting,” he said.

     

    Maybe it’s because of remake and reboot fatigue, or perhaps the fact that The Wiz is already a beloved classic, but the comments were not on Kenya’s side. Although several days of conversation after Rap Sh!t‘s cancelation led to demands for more Black stories by Black creatives, this isn’t what critical comments seemed to have in mind.

    Social Media Reacts To Kenya Barris’ Upcoming Richard Pryor Series And Remake Of The Wizard of Oz

    To the surprise of many users on X (formerly Twitter), The Wizard of Oz isn’t the only iconic story Kenya Barris is taking on. The TV titan will also direct a biographical series about comedy king Richard Pryor.

    “It’s a 10-part limited biographical series that takes a look from cradle to grave. From his earliest upbringing — he grew up in a ho house, or a house of ill repute — and became, at one point, the biggest star in the world,” he said.

    Barris is proud to do the legend justice in the project he is currently developing.

    “It is my baby. I love it. He is my comedy god. A super flawed guy, but who everything, to this day, the comedy that we remember — even including [Dave] Chappelle — is derivative of what he started,” he said.

    “That honest, reflecting, observational look at what the world is and the differences between us that actually make us more similar than we are apart. I think telling his story and letting people see things that they didn’t know about him is something that I’m super excited to bring to life.”

    One thing’s for sure: these new projects will have everyone talking. Many have a soft spot in their hearts for Kenya Barris’s TV shows like Black-ish and Grown-ish, which parallel parts of his life. Maybe a Wizard of Oz based on his background will be another homegrown hit.

    The announcement set X ablaze with questions of “Who asked for this?” and demands to “Stop him!” The viral conversation even sparked speculation about a “biracial cinematic universe.” Check out some of the reactions to Kenya Barris’ Wizard of Oz, which were Mixed-ish at best.

    'Squid Game The Challenge' Exclusive: LeAnn Reveals Her Daughters Named A Deer Their Backyard Lorenzo!

    You guys already know we are huge fans of the Netflix competition series Squid Game: The Challenge and we’re continuing to roll out interviews with some of your favorite cast members over the holidays.

    Two of our favorite contestants were definitely mom and son duo, LeAnn Wilcox Plutnicki and Trey Plutnicki, AKA Player 302 and Player 301. The pair told us that they’ve gotten some questions since the show, primarily around some of the decisions that were made when they weren’t totally in sync.

    “People just like really wanted to know what was really going on there, and, ‘Why did you do marbles together?”‘ LeAnn told BOSSIP.

    “It’s so funny because I also like didn’t vote with you,” Trey recalled to his mom. “it’s just like every bit is under scrutiny, where it’s like, ‘Why were you in that boat with your mom?’ ‘Why didn’t you vote with your mom?’ ‘Why did you do that with your mom?’ ‘Why didn’t you do this with your mom?’

    “I also wondered why he didn’t vote with me on on that Lorenzo vote,” LeAnn joked. “But we’re all playing our own games I guess.”

    LeAnn was referring to the moment in Episode 4 when the contestants voted for three people to be eliminated. Lorenzo was one of the first three names to be nominated for elimination, when LeAnn entered his name but he was more than happy to return the favor by nominating LeAnn for elimination as well. Fortunately Wilcox Plutnicki says there was no hard feelings, but revealed her family had some jokes about Lorenzo declining LeAnn and some of the other ladies’ when they offered the group apple slices.

    “Lorenzo’s just an iconic kind of person,” LeAnn continued. “From afar I’m like, ‘I kind of love this guy.’ He’s a lot of fun but my daughters have named one of the deer in our backyard Lorenzo, because he’s the only deer that won’t take the sliced apples — because I feed them apples all the time, so they now call the deer Lorenzo.”

    We also had a chance to ask Trey about the breaking glass challenge and it turns out that the falls we witnessed were actually a bit of a production trick.

    “We actually didn’t fall through,” Trey told BOSSIP. “What we would hear over the speaker was, ‘301 Pass’ or ‘301 Eliminated.’ Then we would stop for a second, we would go down into a squat to get that ‘falling’ imagery and then they had a stunt performer actually fall through. We were 15 feet in the air but we just couldn’t fall through for like safety reasons.”

    Trey also revealed how felt about Ashley not following the group’s strategy during the breaking glass challenge.

    “I can’t be mad at someone that is playing their game,” Trey said. “Of course, in the game obviously I’m upset, but outside of the game and looking from like a a third party perspective, it’s just like, yeah I wouldn’t wanna take that chance either. That takes a lot of bravery to put yourself in harm’s way for the sake of the group when only one person wins this huge prize money.”

    “Ashley’s a good person, we’ve been hanging out with her,” LeAnn interjected. “She’s just a she’s a good person, I don’t have hard feelings but yeah, I wish she had taken her jump.”

    Ultimately, Trey and LeAnn proved to be two of the toughest contestants in the challenge, and the pair say they are open to doing another show in the future. What show would you want to see LeAnn and Trey do next?

    Nick Cannon finds himself in hot water after promoting a competition based on skin color — social media labels him a colorist, AGAIN.

    TMZ reports the entertainer partnered with the Zeus Network on a live show Thursday evening called Bad vs. Wild Las Vegas. The match-ups pit models from Wild ‘N Out against cast members from Zeus’ Baddies.

    This was the best theme y’all could come up with?

    The women were slated to battle it out in a series of competitions, including one that separated based on their skin’s hue. After Zeus released a flyer to promote the competition, critics quickly called out the colorism implications. The network has since removed the flyer and uploaded an edited version that read, “Chocolate Goddesses VS Caramel Goddesses.”

    Social media noted the name change didn’t alter Zeus or Nick’s original intentions.

    Zeus’ new post pandered to the Black community, saying, “Remember, we’re here to break down stereotypes, not to uphold them.”

    Mmmm….we beg to differ.

    The companies quickly scrubbed the posts from their social media. Yet, that didn’t stop social media from sharing their thoughts via X, formerly Twitter. Some users found the participants at fault.

    One user tore into the former Nickelodeon star tweeting, “This is actually disgusting! Where’s the activists that have been angry for the past two weeks on this app? Now’s your time! Zeus network, Nick Cannon & everyone who participates in this colorist foolishness needs to be held accountable. What is this!?”

    Another added,  “Also Need To Talk About The Ppl That Agreed To Be In It”.

    While another quipped, “Somebody needs to go to jail for this”.

    One user was clearly feed up with the network’s shenanigans tweeting, “The Zeus network HAS to be brought DOWN!”

    An X user mentioned the “Gigolo” singer’s dating history before stating he wasn’t surprised Cannon was exploiting Black women.

    “#NickCannon just doing what Nick Cannon does best: exploit women primarily black women… the fact that he have money and influence and tell everyone that it’s ok…makes it OK I guess”.

    One man stated, “Nick Cannon better tuck his f******g turban when it comes to speaking on black issues at this point. The Zeus owner need to be spit on fr.”

    Another user wasn’t willing to give the actor grace stating, “Nick Cannon a** a complete coon….they made him sell his soul and some more s**t. It was the goofiest n***a acting like he had balls to complete Nipsey journey to only sell himself out. Now he’s linked with Zeus, wild n out ain’t been the same and he’s over populating the states”.

    The Zeus Network and the father of 12 held a “BBWs vs. Slim Girls” competition the same night, which also stirred up controversy. In addition, the collaborators hosted another competition that featured women with Brazilian butt lifts competing against those with natural bodies. They dubbed the contest Fake A** VS Natural A*** (how original) featuring Black Ink’s Sky Days — born Jokeita Days —and Instagram model, Brittany Renner. The reality stars acted as team leaders for each squad.

    Previously, Nick barely escaped colorism claims after social media noticed the fairer skin tones of his children’s mothers. Four out of five of his baby mamas are light-skinned. Model and photographer Lanisha Cole is the only chocolate gyal in the bunch. Some users did come to Cannon’s defense, claiming that preferences aren’t necessarily bad.

    Will Nick beat the color-struck allegations after this? We don’t have the answer, but this distasteful competition definitely didn’t help his case.

    Break-up season gave way to Thanksgiving block spinning as another set of exes, Tamar Braxton and Jeremy “JR” Robinson, reunited this weekend.

    The former fianceés looked coupled up at the Atlanta Falcons vs. New Orleans Saints game. While King Harris and his family were breaking up, it looked like the reality TV couple was making up. As JR rooted for his hometown team, he recorded a video from his VIP seat on the sidelines. The NOLA native shockingly revealed a reunion with Tamar.

    JR showed off his Saints swag and how close he was to the action on the field. Then he turned the camera to some women seated beside him. He didn’t say a word besides a sly chuckle. Before you could ask, “Who Dat?” Tamar ran into his arms.

    The Queens Court couple seemed back like they never left. They were both all smiles, giggling over JR’s hope for a win. The Saints couldn’t pull it off this time, but it looks like there was a comeback on the field after all.

    As BOSSIP previously reported, fans suspected Tamar went through a break-in and a break-up with JR in September. She took to Instagram with a video of burglars robbing her car.

    The post sparked split speculation because Tamar said she didn’t “feel safe anywhere or with anyone.” She also noted that she kept a lot in her car because she didn’t “live anywhere” at the time.

    JR took to Instagram to announce that he had called off his engagement to Tamar. He also put “so many assumptions” to rest, emphasizing he has his own money as a successful attorney. Fans accused JR of not protecting Tamar based on her cryptic post. However, he clarified that he could do nothing about the break-in “at her mother’s place.”

    Later that week, Tamar revealed Jeremy broke up with her within the same hour as the burglary. Yikes! JR said he would always love Tamar as family and she signed off with trusting the process in God’s hands. It’s hard to tell if the exes remained good friends or if they’re soft-launching a second chance at love.

    Fans usually root for rekindled relationships, but this time they’re telling Tamar to “stand up!” Just a week ago, JR looked cozy with Tommie Lee right after she started beefing with Tamar online.

    Tamar Braxton has had a lot of Love And War going on lately, aside from her 10th-anniversary tour. The week before she reunited with JR, he was seemingly on a date with Tamar’s online opp, Tommie Lee.

    After Chrisean Rock allegedly punched one of Tamar’s singers backstage, Tommie Lee chimed in to defend her Baddies West co-star. Tommie cosigned Chrisean’s accusations that Tamar was “clout-chasing” about the incident.

    Tamar tried to extend some grace to Chrisean, but she let the chopper sing on Tommie. The Braxton baddie took to Instagram Stories to clap back. Tommie went low with a “muppet” jab, but Tamar took it to hell and put her on blast as a “cokehead.”

    “So now y’all want me to address out of work reality stars? Never. Me and my ‘muppet’ employed a** will keep you on the list if I need a none-fighting coke head for $2500 an episode for one of these shows of mine I’m casting for. We not the same. Go sell some a** for your next hit,” she wrote.

    “I’m finna come with my next HIT.”

    A few days after that Tommie, it looked like Tommie got the last laugh. She took to Instagram with a video of herself seemingly on a date with JR. The newly single lawyer looked coupled up with Tommie, cheesing in her camera.

    Whew, it’s messy at those Atlanta sports games!

    After all the drama and flip-flopping, some fans celebrated Tamar and JR potentially getting back together. Meanwhile, others said she’s looking “desperate” over “Colonel Sanders.”
