    A young goldendoodle abandoned inside Harry Reid International Airport has found a more loving home — with one of the officers who rescued him.

    Las Vegas police announced that Officer Skeeter Black and his family adopted the 2‑year‑old pup, renamed JetBlue after the airline where he was left tied to a ticket counter baggage sizer.

    The dog was abandoned after his previous owner, Germiran Bryson, was told she couldn’t board her flight without proper service‑dog documentation. Instead of leaving the airport with the dog or arranging care, she walked away.

    “What began as a heartbreaking act of abandonment has turned into a powerful example of compassion, teamwork, and community partnership,” the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department wrote in an Instagram post.

    The Leash of Destiny

    Retriever Rescue of Las Vegas, which cared for JetBlue since he was taken into custody on Feb. 2, said it was inundated with hundreds of applications to adopt the pooch after police broke the sad news of his abandonment on Feb. 18. However, there was never really a doubt where he was headed.

    According to police, the very same rescue had approved the Black family to adopt a goldendoodle months earlier, long before JetBlue appeared at the airport.

    Photos and video released by the department show the moment Officer Black and his family arrived at the rescue facility to finalize the adoption. JetBlue, tail wagging, greeted them as if he already knew where he belonged.

    After Bryson left Germiran at the ticket counter, investigators said, she made her way to her flight’s departure gate. When police confronted her, she explained that the dog had a tracking chip implanted and therefore would find his way back to her.

    At first, police offered to walk Bryson back to the dog and issue her a citation. However, they reported, she became “hostile” when they attempted to detain her, resisting as she was escorted through a security checkpoint.

    She was arrested and booked on three misdemeanor charges, including animal abandonment and resisting a public officer.

    Las Vegas police celebrated JetBlue’s relocation to a home where he’s more wanted.

    “Today, JetBlue’s next journey begins this time, surrounded by the people who stepped in when he needed it the most,” their statement read. “Bon voyage, JetBlue and welcome to a new life where you’ll be loved beyond words by Officer Black and his family.”

    Recent data shows a decline in passenger flow through the Vegas airport in August, signaling pressure on regional tourism as airlines cut back and travel demand softens. The airport recorded about 280,000 fewer travelers compared with the same month last year, a drop of 5.8 percent. Over the first eight months of 2025, cumulative traffic is down by 1.7 million passengers, a 4.5 percent decline from the prior year.

    Much of the decline stems from reductions in domestic service. Spirit Airlines saw one of the steepest losses: it carried 409,886 passengers in August, nearly half its volume from the previous year, reflecting route cuts and restructuring under bankruptcy protection. For the year to date, Spirit’s traffic in the Las Vegas market is down roughly 32 percent. Meanwhile, Avelo Airlines accelerated its exit from the Vegas market, pulling outbound service earlier than planned. Some of its routes have been partially absorbed by competing low-cost carriers, including Breeze Airways, which has launched flights to destinations such as Redmond, Oregon.

    International traffic through the Vegas airport was also lower in August, falling about 3.7 percent year over year. Through August, foreign travel at the airport is down approximately 2 percent. Canadian airlines registered especially steep declines: WestJet and Air Canada both saw passenger counts drop by more than 30 percent. Some international carriers posted gains, but their volume was not enough to offset the broader contraction.

    The weakening airport numbers reflect broader strains in Las Vegas tourism. Operators of ancillary businesses tied to airport traffic — such as helicopter tours departing from the airport’s westside terminal — also reported declines. The airport’s downturn adds urgency to local efforts to stimulate visitor demand. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority has launched new promotional campaigns to counter the tourism slide.

    Analysts attribute the airport decline to airlines optimizing their route networks, shifting capacity away from under performing markets, and focusing on profitability over coverage. Combined with economic uncertainty and reduced discretionary travel, these trends have tightened the operating environment for the Vegas airport and the broader visitor economy.

    The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) have unveiled a prototype checkpoint technology. The two agencies will offer a self-service screening system at Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) in Las Vegas.

    TSA PreCheck® passengers at TSA’s Innovation Checkpoint will be the first travelers to have the option to use the new system starting in mid-March, when the testing begins. The same rigorous screening standards and rules required of passengers using the TSA PreCheck lanes apply to the self-screening lane.

    How It Works

    The self-service screening system is a prototype technology that TSA and S&T designed, developed and tested initially in a laboratory setting at the TSA Systems Integration Facility in Arlington, Virginia.

    The prototype has a video monitor that provides step-by-step instructions for passengers to complete screening at their own pace. Once passengers have completed the required screening process and are cleared for travel, automated exit doors open so travelers can proceed to gather their belongings and head to their flights.

    There will be minimal assistance from Transportation Security Officers (TSO), but they will be on hand if needed. TSOs will work to ensure TSA PreCheck passengers using the self-screening lane are following security protocols.

    The goal is to establish a passenger screening process that is nearly self-sufficient. This involves providing passengers with direct, on-person alarm information and enabling them to independently address and resolve these alarms. The objective is to minimize situations requiring additional measures such as pat-downs or secondary screening procedures.

    Feedback

    During the assessment in a live checkpoint environment, TSA will collect passenger feedback and data on the system’s performance, design, cybersecurity, human factors and other variables to inform future design requirements and system development and to understand how passengers and TSOs interact with the system. The data collected will inform design, development, feasibility and viability decisions for future iterations.
