  • Here’s your chance to buy Princess Leia’s dress, Harry Potter’s cloak and the Batpod

Here’s your chance to buy Princess Leia’s dress, Harry Potter’s cloak and the Batpod

    [ad_1]

Princess Leia’s ceremonial white gown from the original “Star Wars” film will go up for auction next week alongside more than 1,400 Hollywood costumes, props and other movie paraphernalia.

The live auction of film and TV memorabilia, organized by the London-based movie prop vendor Propstore, will be held June 28-30 at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. Among the many other items up for sale are Batman’s Batpod motorcycle from the 2008 film “The Dark Knight,” a shield used by Brad Pitt in the movie “Troy” and a “mud-splattered” cloak and glasses worn by Daniel Radcliffe in “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.”

In all, the famed props could fetch more than $12 million combined, according to Propstore.

The value of movie memorabilia has skyrocketed over the years as film fanatics clamor to get their hands on ultra-rare props. New bidders spent roughly $1.7 million on genuine production props in 2019 versus nearly $9 million in 2022, Propstore data shows.

Here are some famous film items coming soon to the auction block, alongside estimates of how much they could sell for, according to Propstore.

Carrie Fisher wore the flowing white gown and silver-leather belt as Princess Leia in “Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope” (1977). The costume, which she wore in the movie’s final scene, could sell for $1 million to $2 million, the auction house estimated.

The garment, designed by John Mollo, who won the Oscar for Best Costume Design for the film in 1978, was recently discovered after being tucked away in a “London attic” for years. After its discovery, it underwent “a meticulous, museum-caliber restoration was conducted by professional textile conservators in London,” Propstore said in a statement.

In the role of Batman, Christian Bale rode the stripped-down vehicle in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” (2008) and “The Dark Knight Rises” (2012). The nonfunctional “rolling-only” prop is expected to sell for $1 million to $2 million.

    Harry Potter’s cloak and glasses

Daniel Radcliffe wore this costume in “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” (2002), the second installment in the blockbuster film franchise based on J.K. Rowling’s children’s books. The costume, which includes a distressed cloak and Potter’s signature glasses, could attract bids between $75,000 and $150,000, according to Propstore.

Achilles, portrayed by Brad Pitt in the movie “Troy” (2004), brought this shield to battle against the Trojans. The prop could fetch between $30,000 and $60,000, the auction house estimated.

    Al Pacino’s “Scarface” script

  • Emma Watson Admits She ‘Wasn’t Very Happy’ Before Stepping Away From Acting

Emma Watson Admits She ‘Wasn’t Very Happy’ Before Stepping Away From Acting

    [ad_1]

    By Paige Gawley, ETOnline.com.

Emma Watson is opening up about a challenging time in her life. In an interview with Financial Times, Watson, who hasn’t starred in a movie since 2018’s “Little Women”, reveals she “wasn’t very happy” when she was working as an actress.

“I think I felt a bit caged,” Watson, 33, explains. “The thing I found really hard was that I had to go out and sell something that I really didn’t have very much control over. To stand in front of a film and have every journalist be able to say, ‘How does this align with your viewpoint?’ It was very difficult to have to be the face and the spokesperson for things where I didn’t get to be involved in the process.”

“I was held accountable in a way that I began to find really frustrating, because I didn’t have a voice, I didn’t have a say,” she continues. “And I started to realize that I only wanted to stand in front of things where if someone was going to give me flak about it, I could say, in a way that didn’t make me hate myself, ‘Yes, I screwed up, it was my decision, I should have done better.’”

Even so, Watson tells the outlet that she will “absolutely” return to acting, beginning with a movie that’s scheduled to begin shooting early next year.

“I’m happy to sit and wait for the next right thing. I love what I do. It’s finding a way to do it where I don’t have to fracture myself into different faces and people,” she explains. “And I just don’t want to switch into robot mode anymore.”

When she was busy with “Harry Potter” and other projects, Watson didn’t often get to return to her family’s vineyard, the site where they make Renais, their recently launched gin.

“There was definitely a gap when Alex took more of a role here,” Watson says of her younger brother, the founder of the gin brand. “But now that I’m not making films every year there’s a bit more time to play with. For me, getting involved with the creative side of the gin has been fun because I have a voice and I can bring everything that I’ve learnt to help. Alex is the expert on gin, and dad is the expert on wine, but it’s really nice to be asked to be involved.”

For the actress, returning to France with her brother and father, Chris Watson, allows her to enjoy the “culture here of the harvest.”

“I like coming together with everyone,” she explains. “I like the rituals around it and the history and the connection with the people here. For me it’s about family and community and it makes me feel grounded that there’s somewhere I can come back to, year after year after year.”

  • Boarding Platform 9 ¾ – Once Again

    Boarding Platform 9 ¾ – Once Again

    [ad_1]

The Wizarding World is coming back to life — I don’t think it ever died — but it will be returning in the form of a decade-long TV series.

Before we get into my thoughts on that… a brief Harry Potter generational overview:

Harry Potter is a cultural phenomenon. Just about every human on the planet has seen each of the movies at least once or — like me — rewatches Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001) every Christmas. At this point, it’s tough to find a person who hasn’t entered this magical world.

The instant anything new within the Wizarding World is announced, I hop online to get the tea. I followed the Hogwarts syllabus in Fantastic Beasts. After reading Quidditch Through the Ages, I know Quidditch through and through. And The Tale of the Three Brothers — in The Tales of Beedle the Bard — is a storybook I wish I had as a kid.

To me, Harry Potter is not merely a children’s story but a mystical journey that had me waiting — and I’m still waiting! — for my Hogwarts School Of Witchcraft And Wizardry acceptance letter.

As I said, I patiently wait for anything that will draw me back to the world of wands, pranks, and curses. Then arrived Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, the story of Albus Severus Potter and his Hogwarts Journey. It was my first true disappointment in the series.

But there’s far more to this than books, plays, and movies. People can actually visit classic locations, swill ButterBeer at a Harry Potter-themed Park, and even celebrate Harry Potter-themed birthdays or weddings. There are rare moments when magic isn’t present in some form or the other. And soon enough, Hogwarts Legacy launched. I practiced using the PlayStation in anticipation of this immersive, role-playing game set in the world first introduced in the Harry Potter books.

For anyone who hasn’t played the game — Spoiler Alert! — it’s set in Hogwarts. But it takes place in a whole different era — pre-he who must not be named. It revolves around the idea of ancient magic and the Goblin Rebellion. A completely original story that we haven’t heard yet and that makes it thrilling!

Now comes Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement that they’re collaborating with Max — formally HBO Max— on a fresh TV series based on the original 7 books.

“This new Max Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years,” Casey Bloys — Chairman and CEO, HBO & Max Content — said about the project. Bloys assures fans it will be “a faithful adaptation.”

Now, here’s my question … I’m a faithful Harry Potter fan… but do we really need to reboot the books for the small screen?

The final film premiered a little over a decade ago. And the 8 movies in total take 20+ hours to view. Sure, portions of the books were edited out, but don’t most film adaptations lose something in translation?

“Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long-form television series,” said Rowling in a statement.

Wouldn’t it be better to create a show around a fresh story that links to the Wizarding World? There’s a reason why Star Wars hasn’t been remade. Instead, we got shows like Andor and Mandalorian, that showcased other characters. We got the Rings Of Power which was all about how the rings were created and the rise of Sauron — not merely one more version of that magnificent trilogy. Game of Thrones — at the time a worldwide cultural phenomenon — produced such an unsatisfying final season that no one’s interested in a remake. Instead, we got House of The Dragon, a prequel about when the Targaryens ruled.

There’s so much out there that can be done with the Magical world… A show about Voldemort’s rise to power and the first time the wizards fought against the Dark Lord. Or the various Goblin Rebellions or the four founders of Hogwarts. So why does Max want to bring back the original story? There’ll be no twists or turns — we all know how it ends. And 10 years is a loooooong time commitment.

Perhaps it’s purely a cash-squeezing venture for the younger generation to watch different actors take on the roles. Although the original movies are available to stream and the books can be re-read, and the games can be played at any time. But to me, Daniel Radcliff, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint will always be Harry, Hermione, and Ron. That doesn’t mean I — and millions of others — won’t give Warner Bros. Discovery’s Harry Potter series a chance.

A ‘Harry Potter’ TV series is coming, with J.K. Rowling as executive producer – National | Globalnews.ca

    [ad_1]

Is the new Harry Potter TV series a celebration of legacy or a cursed idea? It depends on who you ask.

The much-beloved story of the “Boy Who Lived” from controversial writer J.K. Rowling has been officially green-lit for television by the streaming service Max, formerly HBO Max.

Billed as a “faithful” retelling of Rowling’s original seven books, the live-action series will be released across the span of a decade, with a new cast of actors in the leading roles.

“The series will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail, much-loved characters and dramatic locations that Harry Potter fans have loved for over 25 years,” reads a statement from Max.

The streaming platform promised the TV series would be produced with the “same epic craft, love and care this global franchise is known for.”

“Each season will be authentic to the original books and bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic and beloved films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally.”

Rowling is labelled an executive producer on the production. In a statement of her own, Rowling said, “Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long form television series.”

Reaction to the announcement has been mixed, with many condemning Rowling’s involvement. In recent years, Rowling has come under fire for her outspoken views on transgender rights. (In 2020, Rowling described transgender hormone therapy as a “new kind of conversion therapy for young gay people.”)

Harry Potter movie actors Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint have previously spoken out against Rowling’s views.

Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO & Max Content, told The Hollywood Reporter that Rowling’s “insights will be helpful” in creating the TV series.

“We are in the Harry Potter business. The TV show is new and exciting, but we’ve been in the Harry Potter business for 20 years; this isn’t a new decision,” he said. “We’re comfortable being in the Potter business. J.K. is a very online conversation.… It’s very nuanced and complicated and not something we’re going to get into. Our priority is what’s onscreen. The Harry Potter story is incredibly affirmative and positive about love and acceptance, and that’s our priority, what’s on the screen.”

Regardless, the reaction from Harry Potter fans online has been less than stellar.

  • First-Ever Trans Character Appears in New ‘Harry Potter’ Game

First-Ever Trans Character Appears in New ‘Harry Potter’ Game

    [ad_1]

There’s been much hype surrounding the newest interactive game taking place in the magical world of Harry Potter and his beloved friends, but the latest development uncovered by a gamer introduces something — or someone — entirely new to the Wizarding World.

The game, Hogwarts Legacy, takes place in the fictional Wizarding World more than 100 years ago (way before Potter and his crew graced the halls of Hogwarts), and though it’s set to release on select consoles on February 10, players who pre-ordered the game were granted early access.

Hogwarts Legacy is filled with immersive magic, putting players at the center of their adventure to become the witch or wizard they choose to be,” Warner Bros. said in a description of the game. “They will grow their character’s abilities by mastering powerful spells, brewing potions, and harvesting magical plants as they face off against deadly enemies. Players will also encounter quests and scenarios that will pose difficult choices and determine what they stand for.”

A preview of the game via GameRevolution showed that in one quest, a transgender character appears.

The character, Sirona Ryan, is the owner of the Three Broomsticks pub located in the fictional village of Hogsmeade. Ryan enters the game when the first-person character who is currently on one of its quests approaches her with a goblin named Lodgok, who is good friends with the bar owner. As Ryan begins to talk, she appears to acknowledge that she was born male and now identifies as female.

“Hadn’t seen him in years when he came in a few months ago,” Ryan says about Lodgok. “But he recognized me instantly. Which is more than I can say for some of my own classmates. Took them a second to realize I was actually a witch, not a wizard.”

Warner Bros. and Portkey Games have not yet publicly commented on or confirmed the revelation.

The use of a transgender character is extremely poignant given that the author of the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling, has been criticized in the past for supporting and using anti-trans rhetoric.

The creators of the game clarified that Rowling was not directly involved in the creation of the new game and its characters.

“J.K. Rowling is not involved in the creation of the game, but as creator of the wizarding world and one of the world’s greatest storytellers, her extraordinary body of writing is the foundation of all projects in the Wizarding World,” the description of the game states. “This is not a new story from J.K. Rowling, however we have collaborated closely with her team on all aspects of the game to ensure it remains in line with the magical experiences fans expect.”

Hogwarts Legacy is set to officially launch on February 10 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, on April 4 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and on July 25 for Nintendo Switch.

An Animated Debate: Which Feature Will Bring Home the Oscar?

    [ad_1]

This was such a good year for animation. Last year it truly boiled down to “Encanto vs. Mitchells”, but the field is wide open, so let’s run it down with the help of Vareity!

With Disney/Pixar, we have Turning Red, a critical darling. Not commercial, because Disney didn’t give it a wide release….and Lightyear and Strange World, both of which did receive wide releases, flopped, and are non-entities in this race. Turning Red, which marks the first from Pixar to be solely directed by a woman, has received critical acclaim for Shi’s depictions of female friendships and the mother-daughter relationship.

OP Note: TR is still probably my favorite film of the year.

Netflix has quite a lot, including The Sea Beast, their most successful animated film to date. There’s also My Father’s Dragon, the latest from Cartoon Saloon, which hit the platform with a mild splash. Of course, there’s Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, which is almost guaranteed to place in the nominations.

The article does not, however, mention Henry Selick’s Wendell and Wild.

OP Note: Sea Beast was fine enough, and GDT’s Pinocchio was really cool. Nice to see a multitude of stop motion available, sad W&W isn’t getting more attention.

GKIDS missed a nomination last year with Belle (tip: the soundtrack is amazing), but with Inu-Oh already being nominated for a Golden Globe, maybe they can take it all the way (and give us a US release, y/y?).

Did you, like most people, forget Dreamworks Animation had not one, but two films this year? The Bad Guys had a fairly slow rollout worldwide with it’s soft, almost Spider-verse-esque style for a bunch of criminals. It sadly seems to have sunk out of the public conciousness. Meanwhile, the sixth entry into the Shrek franchise, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, may be 11 years too late, but it was worth the wait, with very positive reviews, and a bombastic artstyle and story that stops just short of saying memento mori.

OP Note: Ok, maybe Puss in Boots is my favorite this year?

Welcome to the animation side, A24, and welcome Marcel The Shell With Shoes On. I didn’t like it. But I’m glad another stop motion/live action hybrid is making the rounds, and is winning a lot of smaller circuits!

  • Harry Potter Game Shows Off Some Straight-Up Wizard Murder

Harry Potter Game Shows Off Some Straight-Up Wizard Murder

    [ad_1]

Wizards prepare a potion to wipe away their crimes.

Image: Avalanche Studios / Warner Bros. Games

Hogwarts Legacy is just a couple months away and if you haven’t been paying attention, the Harry Potter spin-off isn’t messing around. The game will let players learn the series’ infamous unspeakable curses and even use them on students. A new gameplay reveal ups the ante even further though, showing off the game’s Dark Arts Battle Arena where $10 extra bucks nets you the opportunity to instantly murder goblins and wizards.

Avalanche Studios’ second gameplay showcase for Hogwarts Legacy aired earlier today, showing off flight on broomsticks and hippogriffs, as well as the game’s customization options and Room of Requirement home base. As IGN points out, however, the most eye-catching part was a trip to the Dark Arts Battle Arena where, playing as a young Hogwarts student, the developers instantly melted some rando using the Avada Kedavra curse.

The developers explain that battle arenas allow players to test out abilities early to see whether they want to invest in unlocking them. Completing combat challenges there also unlocks new outfits and other cosmetics. The Dark Arts Battle Arena is unique, however, in being exclusive to the Deluxe Edition which costs $10 extra, and allowing early access to dark arts abilities like the Avada Kedavra curse. In the gameplay demo the student is shown ripping through waves of “loyalist” goblins, presumably dark wizards, and other enemies.

    Gif: Avalanche Studios / Kotaku

For those unfamiliar with the world of Harry Potter, the Avada Kedavra is one of a number of illegal curses that kill and torture. It’s also the one that Voldemort used to murder the titular character’s parents. Hogwarts Legacy takes place roughly a hundred years before the books, which might explain the seemingly blase attitude of the in-universe characters to child torture and underage battle arenas.

The jarring juxtaposition is par for the course with Hogwarts Legacy. Caught in the shadow of author J.K. Rowling’s transphobic crusade and the royalties she continues to earn from all Harry Potter adaptations, the game’s very existence is controversial. It’s also continued to be delayed. Previously expected this fall, Hogwarts Legacy is now slated to release in February. Yesterday, however, Warner Bros. announced that the Xbox One and PS4 versions wouldn’t be out until April, with the Nintendo Switch version coming even later in June.

In the meantime, the game appears poised to test players’ morale compasses in more ways than one. As my fellow writer Sisi Jiang joked earlier today, “You know the good thing about trans people presumably excluded at hogwarts is that they don’t have to experience the trauma of murdering another human for blood sport.”

  • Dobby memorial can stay on Wales beach, but officials urge Harry Potter fans to stop leaving socks

Dobby memorial can stay on Wales beach, but officials urge Harry Potter fans to stop leaving socks

    [ad_1]

Environmental officials in the United Kingdom have asked Harry Potter fans to stop bringing socks and other items to a memorial for the character Dobby, as they could be harmful to the local wildlife. The popular destination — Freshwater West, a beach in Pembrokeshire, Wales — is home to a memorial for the fictional house elf, where fans from far and wide travel to pay their respects and lay socks in his honor.

“The memorial to Dobby will remain at Freshwater West in the immediate term for people to enjoy,” said Jonathan Hughes, the assistant director of operations at the National Trust Cymru — the environmental agency that recently evaluated Freshwater West.

Every Harry Potter fan remembers the moment Harry and the gang laid the beloved house elf to rest in a sandy grave on the beach. It’s an unforgettable scene — so much so that, over a decade after “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” premiered in theaters, fans of the franchise still visit Dobby’s burial grounds to pay tribute to the loyal character.

In the Harry Potter series, house elves are freed from enslavement if they are given a piece of clothing by their masters. Harry famously frees Dobby from captivity by tricking villain Lucius Malfoy into giving the elf a single sock. Dobby continues wearing the sock for the rest of his life as a symbol of his freedom and friendship with Harry.

“The Trust is asking visitors to only take photos when visiting the memorial to help protect the wider landscape,” Hughes said. “Items like socks, trinkets, and paint chips from painted pebbles could enter the marine environment and food chain and put wildlife at risk.”

According to Hughes, the number of regular visitors to the park often exceeds capacity. Tens of thousands of people visit each year for various reasons such as “its expansive beach, good surf and Hollywood filming credentials,” Hughes said.

“While we’re delighted that so many want to visit, we have to balance the popularity of the site with impacts on the sensitive nature of the beach and wider environment, and pressure on the facilities and surrounding roads,” Hughes explained.

In addition to Dobby’s memorial, Freshwater West is home to sand dunes and a host of wildlife like large grey seals, harbour porpoise, lizards and rare ground-nesting birds.

Daniel Radcliffe defends speaking out against J.K. Rowling’s controversial comments

    [ad_1]

Actor Daniel Radcliffe has opened up about why, back in 2020, he chose to speak out against the transphobic comments made by “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling.

In an interview published Tuesday in Indiewire, Radcliffe — who starred as the titular character in the eight film adaptations of Rowling’s best-selling books — explained that “the reason” he “felt very, very much as though I needed to say something when I did was because, particularly since finishing ‘Potter,’ I’ve met so many queer and trans kids and young people who had a huge amount of identification with Potter on that. And so seeing them hurt on that day I was like, I wanted them to know that not everybody in the franchise felt that way. And that was really important.”

In June 2020, Radcliffe posted an open letter on the website of LGBTQ youth nonprofit The Trevor Project. The letter was published after Rowling commented on an opinion article in which she took issue with the phrase “people who menstruate.”

Rowling posted a link to the article on Twitter with the caption: “‘People who menstruate.’ I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?”

Her tweet sparked widespread criticism and outrage. Radcliffe’s fellow “Harry Potter” stars Emma Watson and Rupert Grint also spoke out against Rowling’s comments.

In his open letter at the time, Radcliffe said he felt “compelled to say something at this moment.”

“Transgender women are women,” Radcliffe wrote in the letter. “Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I.”

  • Daniel Radcliffe Gets Nostalgic Over Late ‘Harry Potter’ Actor Robbie Coltrane

Daniel Radcliffe Gets Nostalgic Over Late ‘Harry Potter’ Actor Robbie Coltrane

    [ad_1]

    By Zach Seemayer, ETOnline.com.

Looking back with love and good memories. Daniel Radcliffe is reflecting on his time with the late Robbie Coltrane on the set of the “Harry Potter” franchise.

Radcliffe, 33, walked the carpet at the New York City premiere of his new film, “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story”, at the Alamo Drafthouse in Brooklyn on Tuesday, and he spoke with ET about the beloved actor, who played Rubeus Hagrid in the celebrated series of films.

“Honestly, just Robbie was incredibly funny, and when you’re a young kid on a set you can get bored, and I think Robbie just recognized that we needed to kind of be entertained a little bit, at first,” recalled Radcliffe — who was just 12 when filming the first Harry Potter film.

“He was incredibly funny, with accents, impressions, and just, he was lovely with us,” Radcliffe added with a smile.

The Scottish actor died on Oct. 14 at a hospital near Falkirk in Scotland. According to NBC News, Coltrane had been ill for the past few years, and wasn’t active recently when it came to acting.

While speaking with ET on Tuesday, Radcliffe also opened up about his new film, “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story”, in which he portrays a largely fictionalized version of the famed accordion-toting parody musician.

Radcliffe admitted that, while he’d heard some of Yankovic’s iconic comedy songs in his childhood, he didn’t really get into them until he was truly introduced by his girlfriend, Erin Darke, and her family.

“I probably heard some of his songs when I was a teenager first, but when I really got into it was when I started dating my girlfriend about 10 years ago,” he shared. “Her and her whole family are like devoted and obsessed Weird Al fans.”

Given that, it seems like Radcliffe playing the musician would get him some real points with his girlfriend’s family, but the actor cautioned, “They haven’t seen it yet, so we’ll see.”

‘But if they like it, then yeah! That’ll be great,” he added. “I got genuinely nervous when I was like, ‘Oh, I’m gonna have to tell them I’m playing Weird Al.’”

“Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” — which also stars Evan Rachel Wood and Rainn Wilson — premieres exclusively on Roku Nov. 4.

Robbie Coltrane, known best for his role as half-giant Rubeus Hagrid in the “Harry Potter” franchise, died Friday at age 72. Fans all around the world are mourning the beloved actor, including his “Harry Potter” co-stars.

Daniel Radcliffe, who played Harry Potter, shared a tribute on his website to the late Coltrane, calling him “an incredible actor and a lovely man” who used to make everyone laugh on set.

“Robbie was one of the funniest people I’ve met and used to keep us laughing constantly as kids on the set,” Radcliffe wrote. “I feel incredibly lucky that I got to meet and work with him and very sad that he’s passed.”

In his statement, Radcliffe also recalled a specific time on set when Coltrane worked his humor to keep the child actors entertained during bad weather.

“I’ve especially fond memories of him keeping our spirits up on ‘Prisoner of Azkaban,’ when we were all hiding from the torrential rain for hours in Hagrid’s hut,” Radcliffe recounted. “He was telling stories and cracking jokes to keep morale up.”

Emma Watson, who played Hermoine Granger in the series, reflected on her time with Coltrane in an Instagram story, crediting him with making it “a joy to play Hermoine.”

“Robbie was like the most fun uncle I’ve ever had, but most of all he was deeply caring, and compassionate towards me as a child and an adult,” Watson wrote. “His talent was so immense it made sense he played a giant — he could fill ANY space with his brilliance.”

James Phelps, who played Fred Weasley, tweeted in Coltrane’s memory, sharing an early interaction he had with the actor.

“I’ll never forget in September 2000, Robbie Coltrane came over to a very nervous 14yr old me on my 1st ever day on a movie set and said “Enjoy it, you’ll be great,” Phelps said.

“I will miss the random chats about all subjects under the sun,” he added.

Oliver Phelps, who played Fred Weasley’s twin George, recalled what Coltrane said to him on the red carpet for the premiere of the first movie in the series.

“November 2001 — Leicester Square, London. ‘Soak this in lads, its like a Rolls-Royce for your first car,’” Phelps wrote.

Bonnie Wright, who played the youngest Weasley sibling, Ginny, noted Coltrane’s kindness.

“Robbie portrayed Hagrid’s warmth, sense of home and unconditional love for his students and magical creatures so brilliantly,” Wright wrote in an Instagram post. “Robbie always treated me and my fellow cast mates when we were wee kids like equal professionals on a film set. A type of attitude that instilled confidence and a sense of togetherness.”

Matthew Lewis, who played Neville Longbottom, wrote about his and Coltrane’s common interest in space.

“He called me Space Boy. We shared a love of the final frontier,” Lewis wrote. “He didn’t give a f— and it always made you smile. A giant, in more ways than one.”

Author J.K. Rowling, who penned the “Harry Potter” series, reflected on her friendship with Coltrane, and sent her regards to his family.

“I’ll never know anyone remotely like Robbie again,” Rowling tweeted. “He was an incredible talent, a complete one off, and I was beyond fortunate to know him, work with him and laugh my head off with him.”

David Thewlis, who played werewolf Remus Lupin, posted an old photo of Coltrane to Instagram and reflected on the actor’s sense of humor.

“The richest, mightiest and most mischievous laughter on set was all big Robbie’s fault,” Thewlis wrote. “You are forever loved, dear man, and will be sorely missed.”

Coltrane’s death was announced by his agent Belinda Wright on Friday. In a statement honoring his memory she said: “As well as being a wonderful actor, he was forensically intelligent, brilliantly witty and after 40 years of being proud to be called his agent, I shall miss him.”

Robbie Coltrane Dies at 72:  “I Won’t Be Here, Sadly. But Hagrid Will.”

    [ad_1]

Robbie Coltrane became famous the world over as a literal gentle giant, playing the towering but tender Hogwarts groundskeeper Hagrid in the Harry Potter films. He played many other roles in the span of his four decades as a performer, but it was this character—less a father figure and more of an extremely big brother—who made him iconic, despite being buried beneath a great big bushy beard and a cascade of unruly hair. The kindness in Coltrane’s eyes was unmistakable.

Coltrane died on Friday at the age of 72, according to his agent. No details were provided about the cause of death.

The news caused an outpouring of grief from fans who knew him as the lovable half-giant in the mega-franchise, as well as from the actors who played opposite him. “Robbie was one of the funniest people I’ve met and used to keep us laughing constantly as kids on the set,” Daniel Radcliffe said in an Instagram post featuring photos of them together from a 2001 red carpet for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. “I’ve especially fond memories of him keeping our spirits up on Prisoner of Azkaban, when we were all hiding from the torrential rain for hours in Hagrid’s hut and he was telling stories and cracking jokes to keep morale up. I feel incredibly lucky that I got to meet and work with him and very sad that he’s passed. He was an incredible actor and a lovely man.”

When the first film debuted, author J.K. Rowling said Coltrane was at the top of her personal wish list for actors to play Rubeus Hagrid. “Robbie is just perfect for Hagrid because Hagrid is a very loveable character, quite likable, quite comic,” she said. “But you really do have to have a certain toughness underneath. I think Robbie does that perfectly.” As word of his death emerged, Rowling posted her own photograph and remembrance on Twitter.

The actor was born Anthony Robert McMillan in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of a doctor and a schoolteacher.  He began acting professionally in the late ‘70s, doing stage and television work, before graduating to small parts in movies such as 1980’s Flash Gordon and the 1983 sci-fi drama Krull, 1985’s European Vacation ,and 1986’s neo-noir Mona Lisa. He could play both laughs and tragedy, but his talents as a comic actor most propelled his career.

In 1989, Kenneth Branagh cast him in his big-screen adaptation of Henry V, portraying one of William Shakespeare’s most beloved characters—the lovable, hard-drinking gadabout John Falstaff. But Coltrane could also go deliciously lowbrow, as with 1990’s Nuns on the Run, starring opposite Eric Idle as two bank robbers who hide out disguised as … you guessed it.

Coltrane appeared in two of Pierce Brosnan‘s outings as James Bond, 1995’s GoldenEye and 1999’s The World Is Not Enough, playing a former KGB foe turned underworld figure (and reluctant 007 ally) Valentin Dmitrovich Zukovsky. He also starred in the 1990s BBC mystery series Cracker, playing an astute criminal psychologist whose personal life is a disaster.
