Mythbusters: Do Bleach Baths Remove Hair Dye? – POPSUGAR Australia

Imagine this: you’ve followed every step of your typical at-home hair-dyeing routine to the letter, but this time your hair comes out an entirely different color than usual. Turns out, you picked up the wrong box of dye on your most recent Target trip. Panic ensues. You don’t know what to do, and days later you notice the damage set in, so you decide cut your hair and start fresh. Now you’re staring at yourself in the mirror with a new look when you just wanted to touch up your hair color for the new season.

We’ve all had a few hair color mishaps before, but it can feel particularly soul-crushing if it’s something that you’ve been looking forward to for months. Thankfully, there is a solve to removing unwanted hair dye that you may or may not have heard of: bleach baths.

No, you won’t be using the bleach that you clean your home with, but this version works in a similar fashion. “When it comes to lightening your hair with a bleach bath, it’s important to steer clear of household bleach,” Richy Kandasamy, vice president of color development and collective member at R + Color, tells PS. “Instead, you’ll want to mix water with lightening powder and add in some shampoo.”

Here, Kandasamyn explains everything you should know about bleach baths for correcting a hair color or tone, including how many rounds you may need to get the desired result and the safest way to go about the procedure.

First, What Is a Bleach Bath?

A bleach bath is often considered a gentler approach to removing hair color, versus going in for a color-correcting treatment at the salon. Like Kandasamyn said, you start by mixing water with lightening powder and shampoo. “Sometimes you can also add hydrogen peroxide to the mixture for a deeper clean,” Kandasamyn says. “This concoction helps to remove unwanted tones, soften darker colors, or gradually lighten your hair.”

The addition of the peroxide can deepen the process, allowing an extra lift by one or two levels, which is helpful if your goal is to completely reverse a color.

Can Bleach Baths Remove All Hair Colors?

If you’ve dyed your entire head of hair a bold shade (like blue or the trendy cherry red) and want to remove it, bleach baths can help – to an extent.

“The outcome of a bleach bath can vary, depending on factors like your hair’s history with color,” Kandasamyn says. “While it’s tricky to fully return to your natural hair color, a bleach bath can help to lighten it for sure. Sometimes, one session is enough, but if you’ve used a very dark dye or colored your hair multiple times, you might need to repeat the process.”

How many rounds of the bath is needed can look different for everyone but it’s important to take it slow and to keep your hair’s health top of mind.

How to Do a Bleach Bath

The best way to do a bleach bath is to go to a professional hair colorist as they have the expertise to assess your hair’s condition and recommend the best course of action. It’s not recommended to do one at home.

The approach is fairly simple, Kandasamyn says: Mix water with a lightening powder like the R+Color Chairlift Powder Lightener (available for professional use only) or the R+Color Snowfall Ammonia Free Powder Lightener (available for professional use only), along with a shampoo to create a perfect bleach bath for hair.

This mixture, he adds, is a gentler option compared to traditional bleaching methods. Therefore, it provides more control and minimal lightening effects while maintaining hair health. Depending on if you’re targeting a certain area or the entire head, the blend may be applied using a targeted squeeze bottle or a brush for larger sections.

What Is Single and Double-Process Color? Hairstylists Explain the Lingo – POPSUGAR Australia

When it comes to the hair salon, the numerous services available and the terms that come along with them can be a bit confusing for those non-professionals. Two terms in particular that may be hard to differentiate are single-process color vs. double-process color.

However, once you learn about these two different types of color treatments, their names make total sense. With the extra knowledge, it will be easier to understand exactly what you’re getting done to your hair – and it can help you avoid getting something done that you’ll end up regretting. You may even impress your hairstylist or colorist by being on top of the salon lingo.

Ahead, hair experts explain what single and double-process color is, the difference between the two options, and how to know which one you should get.

What Is Single-Process Color?

Simply put, a single process color is for basic coloring maintenance and touching up roots. “It’s perfect for someone who wants to add color to their hair in a simple way,” hairstylist Dave Stanwell tells PS.

A single-process color involves applying one color to the hair in a single step. The application of this process entails the hair being colored with one formula from root to tip. “This can be done for a variety of reasons, such as covering gray hair, changing the natural hair color, or enhancing the existing color,” hairstylist Beau Dieda says.

Dieda says this method is typically faster and more straightforward, and will often take about 30 to 45 minutes for application and processing. The results are a more “uniform hair color, whether it’s a natural-looking shade or a bold, fashion-forward color,” he explains.

What Is Double-Process Color?

Double-process color is ideal for someone who wants to bleach their hair and is looking for a complete color change. This involves two separate steps to achieve the final color. Stanwell will use double process color on a client who wants a total transformation. For example, recently he took a client from brunette to blond. “I had to cleanse and lift the darker color up to the desired shade, rinse, and then start the second color process to get the hair to the blonde it needed,” he says. When going in to completely change the color of your hair, colorist Lorena M. Valdes says to allow ample time to get your desired outcome.

“The first step usually involves lightening or bleaching the hair to remove the natural color,” Dieda says. “The second step involves applying the desired color to toner over the pre-lightened hair.” Double-process color is more complex and time-consuming. “The initial process can take from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the hair’s starting color and condition,” he says. “The second step of coloring or toning can take an additional 30 to 45 minutes.”

This process is typically used for more dramatic changes, such as going from dark hair to platinum blond, or when you want to achieve a vibrant, pastel shade. “It allows for more precise control over the final color, especially when aiming for a very light or bright outcome,” Dieda says.

The Difference Between Single vs. Double-Process Color

Single-process color and double-process color are two completely different services that your colorist or hairstylist may do. They involve different techniques to achieve the desired hair color. “Single processes usually only use hair color while double processes usually imply the use of bleach,” Valdes says.

“The main difference lies in the number of steps and the complexity involved. Single-process color is straightforward and involves applying one color in a single step,” Dieda says. “While double-process color requires first lightening the hair before applying the final color, allowing for more significant color changes and precision.”

Which Option Is Right For You?

If you’re not sure whether single or double-process color is best for you, it’s best to ask your stylist or colorist. Valdes suggests booking a constitution at your salon and having inspirational pictures ready to look at. This will help you, along with their professional knowledge, decide which one will work best for you.

Going Red Changed My Brain Chemistry—Why It's the Best Thing I've Ever Done

I didn’t realize how tightly my platinum-blonde hair was wound into my sense of identity until, suddenly, I couldn’t be a blonde anymore.

Up until a few months ago, I had been some iteration of blonde my entire life. As my naturally blonde hair darkened (around high school), I started putting more and more effort into gaming the system and making it lighter. I was fighting nature, vacillating between phases of highlights and bleach and tones, and honestly, I’m still surprised to this day that I was left with any hair on my head. (Ahem, bleach really does a number on your strands and your scalp.)

Alas, after years of good behavior and somehow maintaining long, thick, practically damage-free hair despite my lightening habit, my luck ran out and my hair finally threw in the towel. It was like suddenly, my head threw one huge tantrum to make up for the years of abuse I had put it through. I’d break out into full-body hives the second the bleach would touch my scalp at the salon, and while I scraped through for about a year with lots (and lots) of Benadryl pre-appointment, it was a Band-Aid solution. Sure, it kept the burning outbreak of hives at bay but not the actual damage my hair and scalp were enduring. As my wonderful colorist, Cassondra Kaeding, explained to me, there’s almost always an expiration date for bleaching. It had been a nice run, but it was now time for it to end. Except, I wasn’t ready.

I couldn’t imagine a world where I would feel anywhere like myself and not be blonde. I think I also had a weird subconscious fixation that maybe my bright-blonde hair—usually the first thing I was ever complimented on—was the single thing that made me attractive or desirable. (Problematic, I know, but as someone who has a history of body dysmorphia, not all too surprising.) As backward as it may sound, I felt like my blonde hair was my superpower. Ask any human, and they probably have some singular trait—be it physical or personality-wise—that they feel equally dependent on.

We experimented with darker shades of blonde, but for some reason, that was almost harder on me than if I had done a 360 and dyed my hair an entirely different color. If I couldn’t be bright platinum blonde, then I didn’t want to be blonde at all. And if I was going to try something new, I wanted it to be entirely unexpected.

A French Colorist Says *This* Is Every Euro Girl’s Secret to Flawless Hair Color

Europeans and Americans have a different approach to hair color. In America, the name of the game is often fresh highlights, perfectly placed color, and strict appointments every four to six weeks to avoid the dreaded root grow-in. In Europe, however, people tend to take a less-is-more attitude with their hair color.

“The European approach to hair coloring is known for its classic and clean look, avoiding excessive highlighting,” says Abby Haliti, world-renowned master of the contemporary European technique of French balayage and founder of Abby Haliti Color Studio. “One of my favorite techniques, which is popular in Europe, is balayage. This technique originated in France and is known for its natural and sun-kissed results.”

Balayage is a free-painting technique that doesn’t use foils like traditional highlights do. Haliti explains that when using the European method, you’re able to get a more customized look by using balayage since you can tailor it specifically to a person’s hair. “It’s like creating a work of art on the hair, with the colorist having more control and artistic freedom,” she says.

While balayage is popular stateside, it’s the hyper-customization and restrained placement that makes European color different. Every time someone comes into Haliti’s studio, she assesses the perfect hair color for them based on their skin tone, natural hair color, eye color, and lifestyle. From there, she customizes the perfect hair color to suit their needs.

Haliti even practices “hair contouring,” which is exactly what it sounds like—it’s using highlights or color to enhance someone’s face shape and features. “Hair contouring involves placing color or highlights in specific areas of the hairline to enhance and uplift the eyebrows and cheekbones,” says Haliti. “By strategically placing color, the eyebrows and cheekbones can be visually lifted and emphasized, enhancing the overall appearance. Hair contouring takes into account the client’s face shape, skin tone, and desired outcome. Darker shades are used to create shadows and depth in specific areas, while lighter shades are applied to highlight and bring forward certain features.”

The “Scandi Hairline” Technique Is Trending on TikTok—How It Can Make You Glow

“The Scandi Hairline trend is a lightening service, usually involving bleach, that gently and quickly lifts the fine hairs at the front hairline,” says Authentic Beauty Concept Advocate, Justin Toves-Vincilione.

In other words, it’s a method of bleaching the baby hairs at the front of the scalp. “To brighten up the entire hairline, some colorists may choose to lighten the hairline in the back to create a more cohesive, halo effect,” he says. “When done correctly, the Scandi Hairline will look visibly lighter around the hairline with a soft pop of brightness, mimicking the look of a natural blonde. The final look is sunkissed, blended and frames the face beautifully.”

Rita Hazan, Celebrity Colorist, says this technique isn’t new, just newly viral. “For many colorists this technique is commonly used to blend out blondes and boost the brightness of the new hair color!” In other words, TikTok just coined a new name for it and send it out to the masses. Still, though, it’s effective. “This technique is a relatively low cost way to give your blonde a boost and creates the illusion of a ‘halo’ effect on your hair,” she says.

Toves-Vincilione says that this trend is similar to the “money piece” trend that took hold a few years ago, albeit more subtle. For context, with the “money piece” technique, a stylist takes a small piece of hair on either side of the face and lightens to create a bright face-frame. “The Scandi Hairline trend is a bit softer, more dialed back, and is intended to look even more natural than similar trends we’ve seen in the past,” he says.

I Thought This Hair Trend Was “Dated”—Now It’s Dominating Summer

“The first step to finding the right color is understanding what undertone you have,” says Cliphair stylist Lynn Chambers. “Your undertone is not the same as your skin tone or color, and it won’t change with age or the sun. It can make a huge difference when it comes to what hair color will suit you, particularly when it comes to red.” So how can you work out your undertone? “If the veins in your arm look greenish in natural light, you have warm undertones. If they’re purple or blue, you have cool undertones, and if you can’t tell (or they’re a mix of both), you’re probably neutral,” says Chambers.

If you have cool undertones, lighter or pink-toned reds will work best. “The color will bring out the pinkness in your cheeks to create a natural blush, and as cool undertones often have flecks of blue or grey in their eyes, it will bring out the brightness there, too,” says Chambers. “A light auburn or a strawberry blonde will look great on fair skin, or a luxurious plum or cherry red is perfect for darker skin tones,” she says.

If you have a warm complexion, then opt for copper or golden-toned red. “Coppery colors will bring out the warmth in your skin and brighten your complexion. Multi-dimensional highlights or a soft balayage with hints of creamy blonde will be perfect all year round,” says Chambers. “Try a mahogany or deep cinnamon with darker roots, or a natural-looking ginger red.”

Neutral undertones, however, are the most versatile. “Neutral undertones have the most options when it comes to red hair because they’ll suit pretty much anything from a blue- or purple-toned red to the brightest neon orange,” says Chambers. “As with all shades, you want as much dimension as possible to avoid the color looking flat, so go for something that will bring out a little warmth and brightness.”
