  • Israel braces for storm with wind gusts up to 110 km/h, red alert in Center, Northern Israel

    The storm, described as unusually strong, is expected to bring westerly winds of around 50 km/h, with gusts up to 110 km/h along the coastal plain.

    Israel braced on Monday for a severe windstorm expected to sweep the country from Monday evening through Tuesday, prompting the Meteorological Service to issue its highest-level red alert. Authorities warned of powerful gusts, heavy rainfall, flooding, snow, and dangerously stormy seas.

    The storm, described as unusually strong, is expected to bring westerly winds of around 50 km/h, with gusts up to 110 km/h along the coastal plain. The red alert covers wide areas, including the Mediterranean coast, northern mountains, Carmel range, central highlands, northern Samaria, northeastern Negev, and the Negev Mountains.

    Alongside the winds, a heavy rain system will first hit northern Israel on Monday afternoon and gradually move south and east. Rainfall totals are expected to reach 60-80 millimeters in the northern and central mountains, with some regions in Samaria, Judea, and the Jerusalem Mountains seeing more than 100 millimeters in under 24 hours. Coastal and lowland areas may receive 30-60 millimeters.

    The Meteorological Service cautioned that the rain could trigger flash floods in riverbeds, the Judean Desert, the Dead Sea, and urban areas such as Ashdod, Ashkelon, and Kiryat Gat.

    Snow is forecast on Mount Hermon, and for the first time this season, the northern Golan and Mount Meron may see light accumulations. Temperatures will drop sharply, with Jerusalem expecting lows of 4 degrees Celsius, Haifa 11 degrees, and Mount Hermon at minus 4 degrees.

    Red warning over Mediterranean coast, waves of up to six meters

    Sea conditions are another major concern. A red warning was issued for the Mediterranean, where waves could reach 2.5 to 6 meters (8 to 20 feet), and swimming is prohibited from Tuesday morning until Wednesday morning. The storms are expected to subside by Wednesday, with temperatures slowly rising and scattered showers mainly in northern and central Israel.

    Police warned of road closures and travel disruptions across southern Israel. Authorities are urging drivers to plan trips in advance, avoid high-risk areas, and follow guidance from emergency services.

    “The winds and rain could damage infrastructure, topple trees and poles, and disrupt daily life,” said a police spokesperson. Emergency teams, including Border Guard units and volunteers, are deployed nationwide to respond quickly to incidents. Residents were advised to secure property, stay indoors when possible, and avoid unnecessary travel during the storm.

    Northern California wind advisory issued for gusts up to 45 mph

    (FOX40.COM) — A wind advisory for the Sacramento Valley will soon go into effect for gusts that may reach up to 45 mph over the next few days.

    The wind advisory begins at 11 p.m. on Tuesday and is expected to end at 8 a.m. on Thursday. North winds are forecast to be 20-30 mph with gusts reaching up to 45 mph. Areas affected are the South Sacramento Valley, Central Sacramento Valley, and Delta regions. Areas along Interstate 5 and portions of Interstate 80 and 505 will also be impacted.

    “Wednesday will be warmer but it’s windier – not a fun day to be outside because of those gusts,” said FOX40’s chief meteorologist Adam Epstein.

    The strongest winds are forecast to be on Tuesday night and going into Wednesday morning with gusts strong enough to cause power outages or blow down tree limbs. The winds can also make driving more difficult for drivers so officials advise commuters to travel with caution.

    Blustery winds blowing through the D.C. area Sunday with gusts up to 55 mph are expected to continue through the start of the workweek.

    There’s a wind advisory in effect for the entire region from now through Monday at 5 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Winds will start to calm Monday evening.

    “It can make for some difficult driving and bumpy flights going in and out of the airports,” said 7News First Alert meteorologist Jordan Evans.

    It’s going to be a cold one too as the temperatures are expected to drop from the high 50s on Sunday to the low 30s and even down to the 20s with the wind chill overnight.

    “There could be sustained winds anywhere from 25 to 30 mph in parts of the area as a strong storm system out to the north and east is bringing in the gusty winds,” Evans said.

    The National Weather Service warned those in the D.C. area that gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects and “tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.”

    The NWS also advised to use extra caution while driving in the D.C. area during the advisory, especially if “operating a high profile vehicle.”

    The Federal Aviation Administration reported that flights are delayed an average of two hours at Dulles International Airport on Sunday due to the wind.

    The Chesapeake Bay Bridge advised that Phase 1 Wind Warnings were in effect for the bridge on Sunday afternoon.

    11:39 a.m.: Eastbound Interstate 80 at Donner Summit has reopened hours after a big rig overturned and blocked lanes.

    11:25 a.m.: These are chain controls as of this writing, according to Caltrans.

    Interstate 80

    Eastbound — Chains are required for all four-wheel-drive vehicles with snow tires on all wheels from Kingvale in Placer County to Truckee in Nevada County.

    I-80 in this direction is closed to all big rigs due to an overturned big rig at Donner Summit blocking lanes. Caltrans recommends drivers choose an alternate route.

    Westbound — Chains are required for all vehicles except four-wheel-drive vehicles with snow tires from Kingvale to roughly five miles west of Kingvale.

    Trucks are being screened five miles west of Reno at Mogul. Drivers must have chains in their possession to proceed.

    Highway 50

    No traffic restrictions at this time.

    10:58 a.m.: The California Department of Water Resources announced the findings of its third Phillips Station snow survey of the season.

    9:30 a.m.: KCRA 3’s Melanie Wingo was at the Foothills along Highway 50, where people stocked up on supplies ahead of the snowstorm.


    8:40 a.m.: Sierra-at-Tahoe plans to either stay open or closed depending on snow conditions. General Manager John Rice talked about his plans for the safety of guests and staff.

    7:36 a.m.: An overturned big rig has eastbound Interstate 80 shut down. Officials said speed was a factor, and chain controls were not in effect at the time. The estimated time of reopening is 1:15 p.m.

    6:30 a.m.: The California Department of Water Resources is doing its third snow survey Thursday morning, a day early because of hazardous snowy conditions forecast on Friday.
