  • Caltech astrophysicist fatally shot on porch in Antelope Valley; suspect charged with murder

    An accomplished Caltech astrophysicist with more than four decades of research contributions in galactic astronomy and the study of distant planets was fatally shot in a rural area of Antelope Valley on Monday morning. A suspect in the shooting has been charged with murder.

    Deputies responded to a 911 call for assault with a deadly weapon in the unincorporated community of Llano at 6:10 a.m. and found a man suffering from a gunshot wound on the front porch of a home, according to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

    The victim was later identified as Carl Grillmair, 67, according to the L.A. County medical examiner. His death was ruled a homicide caused by a gunshot wound to the torso.

    While investigating the shooting, deputies arrested a suspect in a carjacking that took place nearby, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

    That suspect was later identified as Freddy Snyder, 29. He was charged Wednesday with the murder of Grillmair and carjacking. He was also charged with first degree burglary related to a Dec. 28 incident, according to court records.

    He is currently being held in lieu of $2 million. It is unclear what relation, if any, Snyder had with Grillmair.

    A spokesperson for Caltech confirmed that Grillmair was employed as a research scientist at the university.

    He worked at the university’s Infrared Processing and Analysis Center, known as IPAC, which partners with NASA, the U.S. National Science Foundation and researchers around the world to advance the exploration of the universe.

    His work has focused on uncovering the structure of the Milky Way and identifying faint stellar streams and substructures that make up the galactic halo surrounding our spiral galaxy, and helping reshape our understanding of how galaxies evolve, according to his website.

    He has been awarded substantial observation time as a principal investigator on the Hubble Space Telescope and the Spitzer Space Telescope, and his research has earned him numerous accolades including a NASA Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal.

    His hobbies included cycling, hiking, helicopter skiing, general aviation with a specific interest in sailplanes and ultralights, waste reduction and clean energy and large dogs, according to his website.

After letting Avalon know they were there to speak about her ex-husband, she asked, “Which one?” At that point, they began looking into the welfare of her second ex-husband, who lived in Tampa. The MCSO’s Homicide Investigative Unit requested help from the Tampa Police Department, and he was found dead inside his home in the 1200 block of East Frierson Avenue. He had multiple gunshot wounds. Authorities believe Avalon went to Tampa first to kill her second ex-husband, then traveled to Manatee County to shoot her first ex-husband. The 54-year-old’s name is being withheld due to Marcy’s Law. The Tampa victim’s name has not been released. Detectives have not disclosed a motive at this time.

    Two women are dead and a third woman wounded in South Gate after being shot by a male relative who then killed himself, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

    The shooting appears to be a case of domestic violence, officials said.

    According to the Sheriff’s Department, South Gate Police Department officers pulled up to the 8400 block of San Luis Avenue early Saturday after a 911 caller said a man was shooting a firearm in her residence.

    The suspect was leaving the residence when he fired at police, who returned fire, striking the man, according to the Sheriff’s Department. The man went back inside and the officers heard more gunshots.

    Once inside, the officers found a woman in her 70s with gunshot wounds. The woman was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition, according to police.

    The two women who were killed, a 25-year-old and a woman in her early 50s, had also been shot. The man was found dead after with the Sheriff’s Department described as a “self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

    The weapon the man used to shoot at the South Gate officers was found at the scene, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

    The Sheriff’s Department said it is investigating the incident, including the officer-involved shooting.

    A man who was fatally shot by a homeowner in Spanaway has been identified by the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office.

    Russell Terry II, 36 of Tacoma, died Sunday from a gunshot wound to the neck, according to a news release from the medical examiner. His manner of death was deemed a homicide.

    The 51-year-old homeowner called 911 Sunday saying he had shot an intruder, The News Tribune reported. Deputies were dispatched at about 1:45 a.m. to the 16000 block of 13th Avenue Court East, where they found a 36-year-old man wounded on a back porch. Efforts to revive him were unsuccesful, and he died at the scene, The News Tribune reported.

    “Prior to the shooting, the suspect was seen on multiple homeowners’ cameras walking around people’s homes,” the Sheriff’s Office wrote in a post to its blotter. The post also noted that the results of a preliminary investigation suggest the homeowner acted in self-defense.

    Augustin Hernandez Gonzalez has been arrested on a felony warrant for attempted homicide following a shooting incident in Pierson last week.

    Gonzalez turned himself in today and was taken into custody without incident. The shooting happened outside 653 Glenhaven Ave. in Pierson, where a man was found with a gunshot wound to his neck.

    The victim, who was conscious and alert, was found sitting in the driver’s seat of a minivan parked in the driveway. Deputies applied pressure to the wound until EMS arrived, and the victim was taken to a nearby hospital in serious but stable condition.

    Investigators identified the suspect as a coworker of the victim. According to reports, the suspect approached the vehicle, shot the victim, and then fled the scene. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to uncover the details surrounding the shooting.

    The arrest of Gonzalez is a major step forward in the case, and the investigation is still working to understand what motivated the shooting.

    Investigators are still seeking a person suspected of shooting three people to death over the weekend in the Lancaster area.

    The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department responded to a report of a shooting at 4:52 p.m. Sunday near 215th Street East and East Palmdale Boulevard, according to a news release.

    Deputies from the Lancaster sheriff’s station who investigated came across a gruesome scene — three people with gunshot wounds in two separate vehicles, according to KABC-TV.

    They were identified as a 65-year-old woman, a 44-year-old man and another man in his 40s. All three died at the scene, authorities said.

    Deputies discovered the mortally wounded woman at the site, a sheriff’s official told KTLA. “Simultaneously, deputies located an SUV that had a trailer attached to it and located two additional males suffering from gunshot wounds. They were pronounced deceased on scene as well,” Sheriff’s Lt. Steven Dejong said.

    The shooter is believed to have approached the victims by car and opened fire before driving off, according to KABC.

    A possible male suspect fled the scene to a nearby building, where officers established a perimeter and attempted to contact him, according to the statement. SWAT officers were called in to help, and they were on scene as of 3:30 p.m.

    The police had released no further information about the incident as of Monday afternoon.

    The motive for the shooting is unknown, and an investigation is ongoing.

    NASHUA, N.H. — Authorities have identified a Pelham man who was shot and killed by police Sunday night outside Lowe’s at 143 Daniel Webster Highway.

    Ryan Prudhomme, 41, died of a single gunshot wound to the chest outside the home improvement store. The investigation of the officer-involved shooting continues.

    Attorney General John Formella and New Hampshire State Police Col. Mark Hall identified the man in a joint statement.

    An autopsy confirmed that Prudhomme died from the gunshot wound, according to the state’s chief medical examiner.

    Nashua police responded to Lowe’s about 8:45 p.m. They were following up on a report from the Pelham Police Department to be on the lookout for Prudhomme, who was armed when he left his home.

    Prudhomme still had a handgun when officers encountered him outside the store, authorities said.

    Two officers fired less-lethal munitions while another officer used deadly force. Lifesaving measures were attempted, but the man died from his injuries, the authorities said.

    The officers’ identities will not be released until formal interviews occur, which can take five to 10 days, according to the statement.

    The investigation is being conducted by the state Department of Justice and the New Hampshire State Police Major Crimes Unit.

    Four Granada Hills residents who died over the weekend in a suspected triple homicide and suicide have been identified by the L.A. County medical examiner.

    Authorities still have not released a motive in what one officer called a “horrific” incident.

    Just before 7 p.m. Saturday, Los Angeles police responded to a call from a home on Lerdo Avenue, in the foothills of the Santa Susana Mountains, where they found the body of an older man, his wife and two of their adult children.

    Police said the family patriarch — identified in medical examiner records as 79-year-old Rodrigo De Leon — killed himself after killing Arabella De Leon, 80; Merceditas De Leon, 49; and Rodrigo De Leon, 53.

    The medical examiner listed the septuagenarian’s death as a suicide caused by a gunshot wound to the chest, and the other three deaths as homicides caused by multiple gunshot wounds.

    When officers first arrived at the sprawling home on Saturday, they forced their way in and were met by a woman who had survived the gunfire by barricading herself in a room and calling for help. The woman — later identified by CBS News as the couple’s adult daughter with special needs — directed the officers to another part of the house, where they found several bodies, authorities said.

    During a briefing for reporters Saturday night, LAPD Capt. Kelly Muniz said that “the only positive point is that you at least have one witness who has survived this incident.”

    “I don’t know how much more terrifying and horrific of a scene it could be,” Muniz added.

    Neighbors described the family as “quiet” and said they had not caused problems, keeping to themselves. Some said they were surprised to hear of such violence in the affluent community.

    “This is a nice neighborhood,” said Richard Asperger, 62. “To think that a triple homicide or a shootout can happen, that’s not what we moved here for.”

    It’s not clear when a funeral or vigil might take place, and on Tuesday evening the remaining family did not offer comment to The Times.

    2 people found dead in North Hollywood from gunshot wounds

    Two people were found shot to death Friday night in North Hollywood in a possible murder-suicide, Los Angeles police said.

    Officers responded to reports of shots fired in the 6500 block of Riverton Avenue about 7:45 p.m., said Officer Melissa Ohana, an LAPD spokesperson.

    Officers who arrived at the scene found a 48-year-old woman dead from gunshot wounds, she said. Nearby, they discovered a 46-year-old man with “apparent self-inflicted wounds” whom the police are investigating as the suspect in the woman’s death.

    LAPD’s Valley Bureau Homicide will determine whether it is a murder-suicide, Ohana said.

    KTLA-TV reported that police had said the woman was found inside a running SUV, and the man was found two houses away from the vehicle. Ohana said she could not confirm those details.
