Atlanta rang in the new year in tuxedos, gowns, and masked elegance as fans filled Atlanta Symphony Hall for a New Year’s Eve celebration that blended Southern hip hop with the grandeur of the symphony.
Black bow ties and evening dresses worthy of a prestige television premiere set the tone Wednesday night as Radric Delantic Davis, known professionally as Gucci Mane, returned to one of the city’s most storied stages for “Mask’d & Ice’d,” a hometown performance that fused his catalog with live orchestral arrangements.
For many in attendance, the evening felt both elevated and deeply familiar. Fans from across the city and beyond arrived with different intentions. Some came for a refined date night steeped in the Atlanta tradition. Others came simply to hear the music that shaped their lives, now reframed by strings, horns, and percussion reverberating through the hall.
For married couple Darius and Shanna Brown, the night doubled as both a celebration and a memory in the making. The longtime fans said the blend of hip-hop and orchestra felt like a natural evolution.
“We just wanted to do something for New Year’s Eve and have a good night,” Shanna Brown said. Her husband added that hearing Gucci Mane with an orchestra brought a balance of calm and hype that felt uniquely fitting for the occasion.
The concert placed Gucci Mane front and center, backed by the Atlanta Pops Orchestra, which reimagined his hits without dulling their edge.
The evening unfolded in two acts, mirroring the structure outlined in the night’s playbill. Act One leaned into a more classical presentation, opening with orchestral flourishes before easing into early and mid-era tracks including “I Think I Love Her,” “I Don’t Love Her,” “Lemonade” and “Freaky Girl.”
Backed by the Atlanta Pops Orchestra under conductor Michael Giel, familiar songs took on new life as strings and horns echoed through the hall, drawing loud reactions from the crowd. Throughout the show, Gucci punctuated performances with short, emphatic remarks that reflected the city’s unfiltered pride, summing up the mood before “Wake Up in the Sky” with three words that sent the audience into cheers: “ATL shit tonight.”
“This is a very special occasion,” Gucci Mane told the crowd, before welcoming fellow Atlanta artist OJ da Juiceman to the stage to perform alongside him.
Audience members said the orchestral format added depth without sacrificing energy. Dr. Mario Stowers, an Atlanta native who grew up listening to Gucci Mane, said the concert offered exactly what he was looking for on New Year’s Eve.
“It’s New Year’s Eve. I want to have a good time,” Stowers said. “I grew up on Gucci Mane’s music, so I wanted to have a celebratory time with some good AtLiens.”
The crowd’s reaction suggested that the balance landed. As the concert progressed, phones rose, masks glimmered under the lights, responding to familiar lyrics given new texture by the orchestra.
As the concert reached its final moments, Gucci Mane brought his wife onto the stage, thanked longtime supporters, and saluted day-one fans who have followed his career from East Atlanta streets to the global stage. He closed the show with a final anthem and a simple refrain that captured the night’s blend of celebration and hometown pride:
“It’s Gucci.”
