  • ‘Guardians 3,’ ‘Maestro’ Lead Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards Feature Competition

‘Guardians 3,’ ‘Maestro’ Lead Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards Feature Competition

    [ad_1]

The Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild (IATSE Local 706) has revealed the nominees for its annual MUAHS Awards, with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 leading the feature competition with four nominations and Maestro close behind with three noms.

Disney/Marvel’s Guardians 3 earned noms in the categories for contemporary makeup, period and/or character makeup, period hairstyling and/or character hairstyling and special makeup effects. Bradley Cooper’s Netflix Leonard Bernstein drama Maestro collected noms for period and/or character makeup, period hairstyling and/or character hair styling and special makeup effects.

The MUAHS Guild’s feature nominees vary quite bit from this season’s Oscar shortlist for the category. In fact, Guardians 3 was already snubbed in the makeup and hairstyling Oscar race, failing to make the shortlist of 10 films that advanced to the upcoming branch bake-off.

The films shortlisted for the makeup and hairstyling Oscar are Maestro; Poor Things, which has two MUAHS noms; Golda and Oppenheimer, which collected one Guild nom apiece; and Beau Is Afraid, Ferrari, Killers of the Flower Moon, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Napoleon and Society of the Snow, all of which failed to earn a single Guild nom.

Non-shortlisted movies that received two MUAHS noms apiece include Barbie, Candy Cane Lane, NYAD and Saltburn.

Series that earned multiple Guild noms include Ahsoka, The Bear, The Crown, The Idol, The Last of Us and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. A tie in the nomination voting resulted in six noms in the category for TV special makeup effects, which went to Ahsoka, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Last of Us, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Star Trek: Picard and The Witcher.

The MUAHS Awards have an uneven track record for predicting the eventual Academy Award winner for makeup and hairstyling. A year ago, The Whale won the category Oscar and one MUAHS Guild Award, for special makeup effects. In 2022, The Eyes of Tammy Faye won the Oscar but was shut out at the MUAHS Awards; and in 2021, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom collected the Academy Award and two Guild awards.

The complete list of the 2024 MUAHS Guild Awards nominees follows.

  • James Gunn Wins PETA's Person of the Year Award

James Gunn Wins PETA's Person of the Year Award

    [ad_1]

James Gunn walks the red carpet with a live raccoon on his shoulder.

Director James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad) is PETA’s 2023 Person of the Year. The new DC Studios co-CEO was awarded by the animal rights activist group for his film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The third and final chapter in his GOTG series, Vol. 3 explores the origins of fan-favorite character Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), who suffered horrific abuse and experimentation at the hands of the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji). It was a surprisingly dark and disturbing turn for the lighthearted and comedic franchise, offering a pointed indictment of animal cruelty.

“For using impressive and stunningly well-crafted CGI animals to inspire tens of millions of moviegoers—who flocked to theaters to see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3—to have compassion for the millions of animals killed by experimenters in laboratories, director James Gunn is PETA’s 2023 Person of the Year,” PETA said in a statement.

PETA President Ingrid Newkirk added, “By telling the story of the millions of vulnerable animals abused in experiments, James Gunn has shown himself to be a true animal guardian, … PETA is delighted to honor him for encouraging exactly what the world needs: empathy for all living beings.”

Gunn shared the announcement on his Instagram, writing that he was “honored and touched” to receive the award. Gunn, who has a rescue dog and a rescue cat, frequently promotes #AdoptDontShop which encourages people to adopt pets from shelters and non-profits instead of purchasing them.

Gunn’s brother Sean, who plays Kraglin in the GOTG films, said in a YouTube interview with Phase Zero’s Liam Crowley,  “I’m not sure you could find a big movie, at least a big budget sort of tent pole movie, that is more or that is a greater advocate for animal rights.”

  • The Guardians Say Goodbye in New ‘Vol. 3’ Trailer

The Guardians Say Goodbye in New ‘Vol. 3’ Trailer

    [ad_1]

Boy, Marvel is really hitting this being the last Guardians of the Galaxy movie hard. So hard. Like, maybe-they’re-faking-everyone-out-hard.

The latest teaser for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrived in a tweet that reads “On May 5, the Guardians say goodbye.” Then the actual trailer has Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord saying “Are you ready for one last ride?” while the narrator says “the Guardians say goodbye” and then Mantis jokes about Peter Quill dying, and Rocket says they need to give the galaxy “something to remember us by.” This isn’t subtle stuff! Is this a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie or a eulogy?

At first, it seemed like maybe at least a couple of Guardians would die in this film. Maybe they still will. But it is kind of weird to sell a big fun summer blockbuster on the idea that you have to say goodbye to these beloved characters who are maybe gonna bite the big one. It’s not exactly the stuff escapism is made of.

Take a look at the trailer below:

Here is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s official synopsis:

In Marvel Studios’ “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” our beloved band of misfits are settling into life on Knowhere. But it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life—a mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is scheduled to open in theaters on May 5.

The film follows our beloved misfits as they settle into their new lives on Knowhere. Their lives are soon upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past. Despite the loss of Gamora, Peter Quill must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission in order to save Rocket’s life, a mission that, if not completed successfully, could lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.

The film stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, featuring Vin Diesel as Groot and Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter and Maria Bakalova.

  • James Gunn Says Rocket’s Origin Story In ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3’ Is ‘Just Chilling’

James Gunn Says Rocket’s Origin Story In ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3’ Is ‘Just Chilling’

    [ad_1]

    By Corey Atad.

The final “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie is going to get dark.

In a new Rolling Stone article about the third film in the Marvel franchise, director James Gunn  shared that Rocket Raccoon’s origin story will finally be revealed.

‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3’ Trailer Teases Big Action And Bittersweet Laughs

The writer-director shared that among the ensemble of characters in the film Rocket, voiced by Bradley Cooper, is the one he relates to “a very core level.”

“I was always a kid that didn’t quite belong in the group,” he said. “I was a punk rock kid, but I totally didn’t see everything the way [punks] saw it. Rocket had his own traumas early on. And the way he learned to deal with them was kind of being tougher than leather and mean and angry. And that came in response to the things that you learn happened to him in volume three.”

Gunn also praised Cooper’s work on “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and teased the darkness that’s in store for the character as his origins come to light.

“This is the best he’s ever been,” he said of Cooper’s performance. “There’s some stuff in there that’s just chilling.”

Talking about other aspects of the film, Gunn shared how he was caught off guard by the ending of “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019, which saw Thor venturing off with the Guardians, a plot point that classed with the “Vol. 3” script he’d already written.

“They chose to have that ending in editing,” he says. “And I didn’t think it was gonna be in there. ‘Endgame’ came out right after I decided to do ‘Guardians’ again. So I didn’t have much say in what was in ‘Endgame’, and then it came out and then I was like, ‘What the fuck am I gonna do?’”

In the end, the day was saved by Taika Waititi’s “Thor: Love & Thunder”, which ran with the Thor/Guardians team-up and concluded that storyline.

“To be completely honest, Thor was never going to be in this movie,” Gunn said. “Taika took a bullet for me. Because I was not going to have him in. I was just gonna start up and there’s no Thor.”

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” opens in theatres May 5.

  • So What’s Going to Happen to Rocket in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’?

So What’s Going to Happen to Rocket in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’?

    [ad_1]

Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 is on the horizon, and it looks like we’re going to get plenty of the brash fan-favorite character Rocket Raccoon. But while more Rocket is always welcome in our lives, the shots we see of him in the trailer are a little disturbing. Is Rocket going to die in the new Guardians movie? Will any of us survive if he doesn’t make it? How are we going to deal with any more bad stuff happening to this little king?

Here’s everything we know so far!

The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 trailer hints at Rocket’s death

The trailer makes it clear that we’ll be getting a lot of Rocket in this movie. We see him as a baby in a cage, shrinking back in fear as a hand reaches in to grab him. We see him hugging an otter, who’s known as Lady Lylla in the comics.

But then things seem to take a turn for Rocket. He tells Peter he’s “done running,” and then we see him lying on the ground, wounded. As he lies there, he says, “We’ll all fly away together one last time, into the forever, and beautiful sky.”

Then we see him standing somewhere new, without any armor on, surrounded by white light.

Rocket, no!! As our Rachel Leishman points out, one possible plot point in the movie could be Rocket falling in love with Lylla, but then sacrificing himself to save the rest of the team. However, other fans are speculating that he could have a close brush with death, but then ride off with Lylla into the interstellar sunset.

What’s important to remember is that Marvel loves to use their trailers to throw us off the scent. They edit footage in misleading ways, and even include footage that isn’t in the actual movie. Remember when we were all freaking out because it looked like Thor might die in Thor: Love and Thunder? Maybe Marvel won’t throw our hearts out the airlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

What can we expect in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3?

But then again, this is the last film in the Guardians series, so who knows what dramatic stuff could happen? The trailer is definitely hinting that someone won’t make it out alive. The movie comes out on May 5, 2023, so even if Rocket survives, get ready to ugly cry in the theater.

  • The ‘Guardians Holiday Special’ Is Totally Forgettable – And Surprisingly Important

The ‘Guardians Holiday Special’ Is Totally Forgettable – And Surprisingly Important

    [ad_1]

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is about 45 minutes long, and feels like it was written in about that much time. It is a sweet, silly tribute to the spirit of Christmas starring a few oddball Marvel characters. That’s it. But curiously, this Holiday Special is not inconsequential. In its own tossed-off way, it is fairly important to the future of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. While it might not be very memorable, it is essential viewing for Marvel fans who want to be prepared for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

That’s because it makes some drastic changes to the status quo of a few of the characters, and even to the Guardians team as a whole. (I will do my best not to spoil how.) Some of these developments have already happened before the special even begins, with the Guardians back at Knowhere, the outpost in space constructed from the head of a dead Celestial that appeared in the first Guardians movie. With Christmas approaching, Peter “Star-Lord” Quill (Chris Pratt) continues to mourn the loss of Gamora, who died in Avengers: Infinity War. His teammates Drax (Dave Bautista) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) decide to cheer him up by finding him the perfect Christmas present.

Because Mantis and Drax are eccentric aliens, they decide that what Peter would really like for the holiday is Kevin Bacon (as himself), a “hero” of Earth that Star-Lord talks about a lot. And because Mantis and Drax are eccentric aliens with no concept of personhood, they seem to have no qualms about kidnapping this sentient being and giving him as a present to their good friend. And so they head to Earth in search of Kevin Bacon, with stops along the way at Grauman’s Chinese Theater and a Hollywood nightclub. (The other Guardians — Karen Gillan’s Nebula, Bradley Cooper’s Rocket, Vin Diesel’s Groot, and Sean Gunn’s Kraglin — appear briefly in what are essentially cameo roles.)

Writer/director James Gunn does at least provide some big laughs, mostly by viewing Christmas customs through the Guardians’ warped and confused perspectives. And in the style of many TV Christmas specials through the years, there are a couple pleasant musical numbers, provided by the band the Old 97s. And … that’s about all this show has going for it. Bautista and Klementieff, who are the special’s true stars, seem to be having a lot of fun, but their performances are wildly over the top, to the point where they barely feel consistent with the previous Guardians movies. (Both scream at least 30 percent of their dialogue at full volume.)

Clearly, no one took this thing very special, and the viewer shouldn’t either. And yet creeping around the edges of this very scant story, there are revelations about the Guardians that will surely pay off in major ways in Guardians Vol. 3. And if you don’t watch this Holiday Special, you’ll likely be a little confused when they get mentioned there. Frankly, their inclusion is kind of confusing here. Some changes to the team and the characters are dropped so matter-of-factly in dialogue, I wondered whether they were previously established in other Marvel movies and shows and I had forgotten about them until now.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is certainly not a disaster or an embarrassment like the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special that surely provided some of the quirky inspiration for this Marvel production. But it’s so slight that one senses very little time or effort went into it. And in fact, I just found an interview where James Gunn openly admits that he wrote the entire screenplay in “a few hours.” That does not surprise me at all.
