    Reheat on the stovetop over medium-low or in the microwave in short bursts, stirring the sauce in between. Or reheat in a slow cooker on low, stirring occasionally, until hot throughout. Add a splash of water if the sauce has thickened.

    Can I put raw meatballs directly into the slow cooker?

    Yes, you can! They will fully cook in the sauce. Cook until the meatballs reach 160°F in the center.

    Can I use precooked frozen meatballs?

    Yes. Precooked, frozen meatballs will need extra time to ensure they are heated through before serving. Precooked, thawed meatballs will need less time since they only need to warm up. However, it is not recommended to put frozen raw meatballs in the slow cooker. You will want to thaw before adding them.

    Can I cook these meatballs on low in the slow cooker?

    Yes, cook on low for 6 to 7 hours or high for 3 to 4 hours. Keep the lid on as much as possible, and cook until the meatballs reach 160°F.

    Life is so busy especially with three kids who are all in completely different stages of life. We are constantly on the go. We need meals that are healthy, quick, and kid friendly. Some of our favorites are 20 Minute Cheesy Pesto Pasta, 20 Minute Cherry Tomato Basil Angel Hair Pasta, 15 Minute Chicken Stir Fry, 15 Minute Pesto Pasta, and 15 Minute Beef Stir Fry.

    These Instant Pot Quick and Easy Ground Beef Burrito Bowls are being added to that list. They are so flavorful and my kids love them! They can put whatever toppings they want on their own bowl. It not only allows them to be creative in the kitchen, but they are also more likely to eat something they have helped cook.

    Ingredients for Ground Beef Burrito Bowls

    I always like to include a quick list of ingredients so our readers can get a glimpse of everything they will need ahead of time. For all the details and measurements needed, keep scrolling down to the recipe card at the end of the post.

    • Ground Beef: We almost always use 85/15 ground beef when it comes to cooking. It has just enough fat to maintain the flavor without being too greasy.
    • Olive Oil: used to sauté the onions
    • Onion: adds flavor
    • Taco Seasoning: I like to make a big batch of homemade taco seasoning and then have it on hand whenever I need it. You could also use any store-bought taco seasoning of your choice.
    • Rice: just regular long grain white rice works great
    • Black Beans: Be sure to drain and rinse them so you don’t add extra moisture to the dish.
    • Tomatoes with Diced Green Chiles: Rotel is a great brand for this, or you could use a can of fire roasted tomatoes
    • Frozen Corn: Fresh corn cut off the cob could also be used if you have it.
    • Beef Broth: the moisture needed to cook the rice
    • Colby Jack Cheese: I love the taste of colby jack in Mexican recipes but you could use monterey jack, cheddar, or a Mexican blend that you buy at the grocery store.

    Can I Use Frozen Ground Beef?

    Now, I know that no one wants to think about getting meat out to defrost, but it really is best to use thawed meat. And just in case you don’t, I tried partially thawed ground beef and it totally worked. NOT frozen, but frozen in the center. Hope my efforts to test help a stressed out mom.     Quick Release or Natural Release?

    When the instant pot has done its thing, you will want to do a quick pressure release. When the pressure has gone down, you can open the lid and give the rice a good fluff. Add the cheese to the top and put the lid back on for a minute or two until the cheese has melted.

    What Size Instant Pot Do I Need?

    We have had a lot of questions about what instant pot is the best. We still love our 6 Qt 9 Function Instant Pot. It is the perfect size for our family of 5. If you’re feeding more people, you might want to look into the 8qt size. If you’re cooking for one or two people, then the 3qt will be just fine.

    How Do I Make Instant Pot Ground Beef Burrito Bowls?

    Like most instant pot recipes that include meat, we start by cooking the meat first. Put your instant pot in “saute” mode and brown your ground beef. We don’t know how we ever lived before getting our ground beef meat chopper (see link below). It is so awesome!

    • What Kind of Ground Beef Should I Use?
      • Before you ask, we prefer to use 85/15 ground beef. It has just enough fat to have a deep, delicious flavor but not so much that your dish is greasy.

    After you have browned the ground beef, you can add the taco seasoning and diced onions with some olive oil and sauté them until the onions start to soften and the ground beef is cooked. Then add some olive oil and the uncooked rice. We have found that sauteing the rice for a minute or two gives it such a great flavor.

    Add the last four ingredients (black beans, canned tomatoes, corn and beef broth) and give everything a good stir with a wooden spoon. You can totally swap these four ingredients for other things you love…pinto beans instead of black perhaps! Put the lid on your instant pot, lock it and set it to “manual” high pressure for 7 minutes.

    What Toppings Should I Put on My Burrito Bowl?

    Then you can dish up bowls for everyone and let everyone put the toppings on that they want. It’s like choose your own burrito bowl adventure! We like to sort of make a burrito bowl bar with all the toppings out so everyone can personalize their bowl. The kids go crazy for this! Here are some of our favorite toppings:

    How Do I Clean My Instant Pot?

    You can clean an instant pot same the way you would any other nice pan. We like to clean it by hand in the sink rather than putting it in the dishwasher. We share all our tips for cleaning an instant pot in our post for Instant Pot Turkey Chili.

    How to Make Quick and Easy Instant Pot Burrito Bowls

    Bowls

    • 1 Pound Ground Beef, 85/15
    • 3 Tablespoons Olive Oil
    • ½ Onion, yellow, minced
    • 2 Tablespoons Taco Seasoning
    • 1 Cup Rice, uncooked extra-long grain
    • 15 oz Black Beans, drained and rinsed
    • 14.5 oz Tomatoes, fire roasted with Diced Green Chiles, diced, drained
    • 1 Cup Corn, frozen
    • 2 ¼ Cups Beef Broth
    • 1 Cup Colby Jack Cheese, shredded

    Prevent your screen from going dark

    • Press the Sauté button on the Instant Pot.

    • Once hot, add ground beef to the pot, using a ground beef chopper to break up the meat.

      1 Pound Ground Beef

    • Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil and the onions and taco seasoning and cook until onions start to soften.

      3 Tablespoons Olive Oil, ½ Onion, 2 Tablespoons Taco Seasoning

    • Add an additional tablespoon of olive oil and uncooked rice and toast uncooked rice for a minute.

      3 Tablespoons Olive Oil, 1 Cup Rice

    • Stir in black beans, canned tomatoes, corn, and broth.

      15 oz Black Beans, 14.5 oz Tomatoes, 1 Cup Corn, 2 ¼ Cups Beef Broth

    • Lock the Instant Pot lid in place and set to Manual, High Pressure for 7 minutes.

    • Use Quick Pressure Release, and once pressure drops, open Instant Pot and fluff the rice.

    • Sprinkle with the cheese, recover and let set for 1-2 minutes to melt cheese.

  • In his national address, President Trump claimed he’s bringing prices down. Here’s what the data shows.

    After nearly two months without new consumer price data, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released its latest report Thursday, providing a glimpse at energy costs, food prices and other everyday expenses.

    According to the consumer price index, inflation slowed in November, with prices rising 0.2% over the 0.3% observed in September. (BLS could not collect October data because of the government shutdown.)

    Still, inflation remains stubbornly high. Compared with a year ago, consumer costs are up about 2.7%.

    Thursday’s report came just a day after President Donald Trump delivered a prime-time address from the White House in which he largely discussed affordability concerns, from housing costs to grocery prices, saying the U.S. is “poised for an economic boom.”

    “The last administration and their allies in Congress looted our treasury for trillions of dollars, driving up prices and everything at levels never seen before. I am bringing those high prices down and bringing them down very fast.”

    In truth, of the 11 everyday costs tracked month to month by the consumer price index, only five have decreased since January.

    Here’s a closer look at the president’s claims and how prices are changing, or not, during his second term in office.

    Eggs

    In the wake of all-time highs set earlier this year, egg prices have collapsed in recent months.

    That downward trend continued in November, with the price dropping a whopping 63 cents from September and settling at $2.86 per dozen. It’s the first time since June 2024 that the average nationwide price for a dozen large Grade A eggs registered below the $3 mark.

    This steep drop-off in prices is a result of a declining number of bird flu cases in commercial and backyard flocks. In the first two months of 2025, tens of millions of birds were affected by highly pathogenic avian influenza across 39 states, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data. With entire flocks culled to prevent the spread of the virus, the egg supply was strained, leading to shortages in stores and record costs for consumers.

    Following another spike in cases in the early fall, the number of new infections appears to be subsiding again, with less than 2 million U.S. birds affected in the past two months. More notably, zero outbreaks among egg-laying chickens have been reported in November and December.

    Consequently, costs are “falling rapidly” as highlighted by Trump in his prime-time address earlier this week.

    “The price of eggs is down 82% since March, and everything else is falling rapidly. And it’s not done yet, but boy are we making progress. Nobody can believe what’s going on.”

    While egg prices have dropped considerably from March’s record high of $6.23 per dozen, the difference of roughly $3.37 from March to November represents a 54% decrease — not the 82% cited by the president.

    In a statement given to the Tribune, a White House official clarified that he was referring to wholesale costs, not retail prices.

    Milk

    The cost of milk also saw a measurable decrease from the previous month, falling 13 cents.

    A gallon of fresh, fortified whole milk is now priced at $4.00 — that’s 2.5% less than it was in December 2024, before Trump took office.

    Bread

    The average price of white bread fell in November to $1.79 per pound, marking a three-year low for the pantry staple. Time for bread pudding, anyone?

    Bananas

    The cost of bananas fell slightly from September’s all-time highs, dropping just a fraction of a cent to $0.66 per pound in November.

    Recent price inflation is likely a byproduct of the president’s trade war, with tariffs imposed on the country’s top banana suppliers like Guatemala, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Colombia, Honduras and Mexico — all of which are currently subject to an import tax of at least 10%.

    But in mid-November, Trump took action to combat rising grocery costs, announcing that some agricultural products would be exempt from tariffs due to “current domestic demand for certain products” and “current domestic capacity to produce certain products.”

    Both fresh and dried bananas were among the listed exemptions, indicating that lower prices may be around the corner.

    Oranges

    No data on orange prices was available for November.

    However, in September, the cost of navel oranges was listed at $1.80 per pound, less than a cent shy of record highs and nearly 18% more than they were at the start of the Trump administration.

    Drastically low domestic orange production combined with steep tariffs on foreign growers have been helping to push costs skyward. But, as with bananas, oranges are now exempt from most reciprocal tariffs.

    Tomatoes

    As of November, the cost of field-grown tomatoes was $1.83 per pound. That price is 8 cents lower than the previous month of data and down roughly 12% since Trump took power.

    The change is somewhat abnormal given the growing season, as prices typically rise in the fall and peak in the early winter months, and could be attributable to the Trump administration’s recent course reversal on many of its tomato tariffs.

    Chicken

    The cost of fresh, whole chicken fell for a fourth consecutive month, to $2.04 per pound — its lowest price in a year.

    Rising feed costs and the effects of bird flu on the poultry supply chain have driven persistently higher prices, but with the number of cases dropping again, we could see lower prices in the new year.

    Still, the average cost is only about 2 cents less than it was when President Joe Biden left the White House.

    Ground beef

    Ground beef is getting more expensive.

    After shoppers saw some relief in September from climbing costs, the price of ground beef jumped another 18 cents.

    Rising costs can be attributed to a confluence of factors. The U.S. cattle inventory is the lowest it’s been in almost 75 years, and severe drought in parts of the country has further reduced the feed supply, per the USDA. Additionally, steep tariff rates on top beef importers also played a part in higher prices stateside, but as of Nov. 13 high-quality cuts, processed beef and live cattle are exempt from most countries’ levies.

    Still, since the change of administrations, ground beef costs have ballooned by 18% — translating to $1 per pound price increases at the grocery store.

    As of November, a pound of 100% ground beef chuck would set you back about $6.50.

    Electricity

    Electric costs have also been steadily rising.

    At approximately 19 cents per kilowatt-hour, the current price of electricity is a fraction of a cent off August’s high. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the average American household uses 899 kWh every four weeks, translating to a monthly bill of about $170.

    Thankfully, the White House appears to be working to mitigate mounting costs. In his presidential address, Trump claimed that within the next 12 months his administration will have opened 1,600 new electrical generating plants.

    “Prices on electricity and everything else will fall dramatically,” Trump said.

    For many Americans, relief is needed. Since last December, the average price of electricity per kilowatt-hour has increased more than 7%.

    Gasoline

    Declining gas prices were another highlight of Trump’s Wednesday night remarks.

    The cost of gasoline has tumbled from the record-setting prices Americans saw three summers ago under Biden, and just last month, the price at the pump dropped more than 10 cents per gallon.

    “On day one I declared a national energy emergency,” Trump said. “Gasoline is now under $2.50 a gallon in much of the country. In some states, it by the way, just hit $1.99 a gallon.”

    According to the latest CPI data, the average nationwide cost for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline is $3.23. And though prices are noticeably lower than they were two to three years ago, that average remains higher than it was just a year ago and up nearly 3% during the Trump presidency.

    Prices in Chicago, meanwhile, are about the same month-over-month, costing an average of $3.29 per gallon, according to EIA data.

    Natural gas

    Bucking its previous downward trend, piped utility gas, or natural gas, is another expense that’s climbing. The nationwide cost jumped 3 cents in November, landing at $1.64 per therm.

    On average, Americans are paying close to 8% more to heat their homes, ovens and stovetops than when Biden left office. Year-over-year, that gap is even more drastic: a roughly 10% change or difference of 15 cents per therm.

    This is a recipe Cade and I would make when we first got married and lately I’ve been in the biggest cooking rut. It’s not even that I don’t want to cook, it’s just that nothing feels inspiring and nothing sounds good. So, I’ve been going back to my roots and making some simple comfort foods that everyone will eat and take no brain cells from me.

    Ingredients for Ground Beef and Potatoes

    Onion and peppers taste good when you pair them with classic ground beef and potatoes! We add a few seasonings and you have an easy ground beef dinner recipe they whole family will love. Here are all the ingredients you need:

    • Canola Oil: helps cook the potatoes until golden and crispy
    • Yukon Gold Potatoes: you can peel them or not and dice them into 1/4-inch cubes
    • Ground Beef: I usually go with 85/15 for good flavor. You can use more lean ground beef if desired, or substitute it with ground turkey or ground chicken.
    • Onion: just a yellow onion works great
    • Red Bell Pepper: you could also grab a yellow or orange bell pepper
    • Worcestershire Sauce: adds rich umami flavor
    • Ketchup: adds flavor and a touch of sweetness
    • Liquid Smoke: adds smokiness
    • Dijon Mustard: adds flavor
    • Seasonings: Smoked Paprika, Garlic Powder, Dried Oregano, Kosher Salt and Ground Black Pepper
    • Parsley: adds a fresh pop of flavor

    How to Make Skillet Ground Beef and Potatoes

    You only need one pan to make this family-friendly meal! Grab your cast iron skillet and let’s get cookin’!

    1. Brown the Potatoes: Add oil to a large cast iron skillet and heat over high heat. when the oil is shimmering, reduce the heat to medium high and add the potatoes. Season them with salt and stir to coat. Let them cook until browned, stir often until the potatoes are tender.
    2. Cook the Ground Beef: Remove the potatoes from the skillet and add the ground beef and break it up to cook.
    3. Sauté the Onions and Peppers: Push the meat to the sides of the pan and add the onions. Stir until they soften and then add the bell peppers and cook until soft. Drain any grease if needed.
    4. Combine: Add all the rest of the ingredients (including the potatoes) to the large skillet and continue to cook until the potatoes are tender.
    5. Season: Give the dish one last hit of salt and pepper until you get the flavor you want. Serve it hot and top it with some fresh parsley.

    Do You Have to Use a Cast Iron Skillet?

    Normally I would say that any skillet will get the job done just fine but for this recipe, you must use a cast iron skillet. To get the crispiness and flavor you want, use a cast iron skillet.

    What to Serve with Ground Beef and Potatoes

    When I eat a hearty main dish, I like to have simple vegetable sides to lighten it up. Some of our favorite side dishes are:

    Storage Tips

    Store: Leftovers should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will keep for up to 4-5 days.

    Reheat: You can use the microwave or stovetop to reheat leftover ground beef and potatoes. If I’m reheating just one serving, I’ll pop it in the microwave but if I’m reheating a bunch for the whole family, then I’ll use the stovetop.

    Freeze: These leftover freeze great! Let them cool completely and then store them in an airtight container. They will keep for up to 3 months. Let them thaw in the fridge overnight and then reheat on the stovetop as written above.

    As long as we are talking about leftovers, I love when we have leftovers of this ground beef recipe because I love repurposing them! Sometimes I’ll make scrambled eggs and serve them for breakfast. Or, add some grated cheese and salsa throw it into a tortilla for a tasty burrito for lunch or dinner the next night! Ground beef and potatoes is so versatile!

    • Heat the oil in a large 10-12″ cast iron skillet over high heat.

      2 Tablespoons Canola Oil

    • Once the oil is hot, reduce the heat to medium high, then add the potatoes and a sprinkle of salt evenly over all potatoes. Stir once and let sit to brown the bottom. Cook, stirring often, until the potatoes are turning golden and becoming tender, but not soft, about 6 minutes.

      1 Pound Yukon Gold Potatoes, 1 teaspoon Kosher Salt

    • Remove the potatoes to a dish. Add the meat. Cook, breaking apart the meat.

      1 Pound Ground Beef

    • Push the meat to the sides, and add the onion, stirring until softened, and add the bell pepper until soft. Drain excess grease if needed.

      1 Yellow Onion, 1 Red Bell Pepper

    • Add the Worcestershire, ketchup, liquid smoke, mustard, smoked paprika, garlic powder, oregano, salt and pepper. Continue cooking and breaking up the beef, until the potatoes and onions are tender and the meat is fully cooked through, about 6 to 8 minutes more.

      1 Tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce, 1 Tablespoon Ketchup, 1 teaspoon Liquid Smoke, 1 Tablespoon Dijon Mustard, 2 teaspoons Smoked Paprika, 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder, 1 teaspoon Dried Oregano, 1 teaspoon Kosher Salt, ¼ teaspoon Ground Black Pepper

    • Taste and adjust the salt and pepper as desired. Serve hot, topped with chopped parsley.

    • Add beef broth and stir.

    If you’re not in a hurry, reduce the broth. Letting the broth simmer and reduce for 30-35 minutes or even all afternoon will concentrate the flavors and slightly thicken the soup.

    Taste for seasoning OFTEN. Taste the broth as some broths are extra salty. After adding all of the ingredients, taste it again before serving. This is where you can bring a little personality with smoked paprika, extra salt, hot sauce etc. to make it to your liking.

    How to Make Hearty Ground Beef Soup

    1. Sauté: Heat a little oil in a dutch oven over medium heat, then add the onion, ground beef, carrots and celery until the beef is cooked through. Drain the excess fat.
    2. Combine: Add the tomato paste and stir into the meat followed by the potatoes, broth, tomatoes, Worcestershire sauce, seasoning and bay leaf.
    3. Simmer: Let the soup simmer for 10 minutes with a lid on.
    4. Add: Now add in the remaining ingredients (except the parsley).
    5. Simmer: Let the soup simmer for another 15-20 minutes.
    6. Serve: Sprinkle each bowl with fresh chopped parsley and serve with some yummy crusty bread.

    What to Serve with Hamburger Soup

    While the soup is simmering, I like to prepare a quick salad which helps to lighten up the meal, while my mom would always slice up a loaf of french bread or even serve sandwich bread… yes, sandwich bread, it was the 90s. 😉 You could also make some quick dinner rolls to go with it.

    Can ground beef vegetable soup be made in the slow cooker?

    Yes, absolutely! Brown the ground beef on the stove top first, and then add all the ingredients to the slow cooker and let it cook on low all day (5-6 hours) or on high for 2-3 hours.

    How do I thicken the broth?

    The starch from the potatoes should help thicken the broth but if you want it thicker, you can make a cornstarch slurry to thicken it up.

    can I use ground chicken or turkey?

    Yes! Ground turkey and chicken both make great substitutes in this recipe. They will be a little less flavorful, but will be lower in fat.

    Storing and Reheating

    Leftovers should be stored in the fridge in an airtight container. It will keep for 4-5 days. It can be reheated in the microwave or on the stovetop.

    This is also a freezer-friendly soup recipe. Let the soup cool completely and pour it into a freezer safe container. It will keep in the freezer for up to 3 months. Let it thaw in the refrigerator and then reheat on the stovetop until heated through.

    It’s one of those recipes that I can make and everyone is happy. Not a single picky-eater complaint. And it’s the perfect meal to take to a new mom who just had a baby, sick neighbor or just to have friends over for dinner one night.

    • Protein: Swap the ground beef for ground chicken, turkey or any other leftover cooked meats like chicken or pork.
    • Vegetarian: Omit the meat and add another can of beans and additional veggies like spinach, sautéed zucchini, and mushrooms to make it meatless!
    • Beans: Not into beans or prefer a different kind? You can omit or substitute!
    • Taco Seasoning: my homemade taco seasoning uses simple pantry ingredients and is way better than store-bought!

    Prevent your screen from going dark

    • Preheat the oven to 425℉ degrees and roll out the pie crust.

    • Gently press it into an 8 or 9″ pie pan then trim off the excess around the edges.

    • Poke the bottom of the pie crust with a fork then place a sheet of parchment paper inside of the crust and add some baking beans then bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until the crust is light and golden around the edges.

    • While the pie crust is baking add the onion to a large skillet over medium heat with a drizzle of oil. Cook until tender, about 4 minutes.

      1 Cup White Onion

    • Add the ground beef. Cook and crumble the ground beef until it is no longer pink. Drain excess grease and place back in the pan.

      1 Pound Ground Beef

    • Next, add in the taco seasoning and garlic and stir while cooking until the garlic becomes fragrant, about one minute.

      1 Taco Seasoning Packet, 2  Cloves  Garlic

    • Add the beans and stir to combine.

      1 Can Black Beans

    • Add half of the shredded cheese, 1/4 cup of the sour cream and salsa and stir to combine.

      3  Cups Colby Jack Cheese, 1/2 Cup  Sour Cream, 3/4  Cup  Salsa

    • Once the pie crust has cooked, add the ground beef mixture to the crust and evenly spread it out. Add the remaining shredded cheese on top and bake for 15-20 minutes or until the cheese is fully melted and starts to bubble around the edges.

    • Let the pie cool for about 10 minutes before adding the remaining sour cream, lettuce, tomatoes and olives. Slice and serve with lime wedges, if desired.
