This Online Spice Shop Is My Secret Weapon for Making Weeknight Dishes Way More Delicious

In my house, seasoning is always a huge part of any meal. And, while I can always count on the tried-and-true spices I grew up with and keep in my spice cabinet at all times (garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, crushed red pepper, sazón, and Italian seasoning, to name a few) I love trying out new ones and cooking with new flavors. Unfortunately, you can exhaust your average supermarket’s spice selection pretty quickly, and sometimes, finding a particular spice or herb can be difficult, depending on where you live and what markets you have access to. Thankfully, there are a ton of great online spice shops that let you bring flavors and aromas from all over the world right into your kitchen at home. I recently got the opportunity to try out some spices from Vân Vân, an online purveyor of single-origin spices and herbs sourced from different growing regions around Vietnam, and I can’t stop raving about it.

Started in the summer of 2022 by founders Thảo and Duy — who have a background running popular cooking pop-ups and pick-ups — Vân Vân has a foundation rooted in Vietnamese home cooking, history, and culture, with a mission to “invest in local growers and support their livelihoods by paying a fair price for their products,” according to their website. By partnering with small growers, the brand aims to put premium Vietnamese products on center stage and showcase the country’s diverse flavors. Vân Vân offers a collection of unique herbs and spices that are available a la carte or as bundles. (They have some pretty cool merch, too.)

I live in New York City, and even with access to tons of high-quality markets around town, it’s tough to find many of these spices in my local supermarket, and even if I could, the fresh versions would probably go bad before I could use them all. The best part about Vân Vân is that the spices and herbs come dehydrated, so when you want to use them, you can just soak them in water for a minute or two and they’re good to go! The Bundle of Flavors collection (which I tested) includes Northern Mountain Garlic, Delta Lemongrass, Sparrow Ginger, Coastal purple shallot, and Heaven Facing Chili. Besides being delicious additions to my spice cabinet, they’re also fairly priced, and I can feel good about supporting small businesses when I order them — rather than buying spices of questionable origin from some mysterious grocery store spice giant. And, while you can cook meals and make cocktails based around the spices themselves from the recipe bank on their website, you can also just add these spices to your regular weeknight meals. Being able to cook with high-quality spices that I’d usually have to go to a restaurant to taste has been great, and it makes my weeknight meals so much more interesting and fun to eat.

I’m also not the only one who digs the spice shop. “I bought the bundle of flavors so I could try them all!” one reviewer wrote, “They are so convenient to have around, I find fresh lemongrass hard to find in my local supermarkets, so to have it on hand is so convenient, same with all the other spices. Secondly, the flavor is phenomenal. I find myself gravitating towards the smaller garlic, the lemongrass, and the chilis the most when I’m cooking. The chilis have some good heat!” So, if you’re looking to, er, spice up your weeknight meals or try some new and exciting recipes, give Vân Vân a try ASAP — especially while it’s on sale.

Electricity and hydro savings tip: Are the lights on?

You already turn off the lights when you leave a room or turn down the thermostat at night, right? In addition to that, Barry Walker, residential business development manager for efficiencyns.ca, says to check lightbulb packaging for LED wattage: “For example, it may read seven watts LED and say it’s equivalent to 60 watts of an incandescent light. So you’re only using a fraction of the energy to get the same amount of light.” He says that can save you 25% of the cost of lighting on your electricity bill.

Other cheap and cheerful ways to save on lighting and other energy costs: Buy motion sensors, smart power bars and electrical timers. “These are small things, but they’re inexpensive and they will pay for themselves very, very quickly.”

Electricity and hydro savings tip: Consider a heat pump

The biggest cost on Candians’ electricity bills is home heating, and heat pumps are becoming popular among Canadians because of government incentives to help with the costs. Walker installed a heat pump 20 years ago to replace his oil and electric heating in his 60-plus-year-old home in Halifax. “I’m a good old Scotsman and I kept every bill—my total energy costs dropped 40%,” he says. “I use thermal storage for my backup, and that heat pump is paying for itself three-fold now.”

Water savings tip: Get efficient

Plus, the heat pump can help save on the second biggest cost on your electricity: hot water. “Your payback will depend largely on the volume of hot water your household uses,” Walker says. “If you’ve got teenagers taking three showers a day, then the payback on that heat pump hot water tank will be fairly quick.” If a heat pump is too big of a commitment, you can opt for a more energy efficient hot water heater (even if you rent yours), says Walker.

Also, use cold water detergent to wash clothes and check for leaky taps. If you pay for municipal water, where you pay based on how much you use, that could be a sinkful of money a day going down the drain, he says.

How to save on internet and cable bills: Renegotiate service agreements

Renegotiate or bundle internet and cable services, and examine your home insurance and auto insurance, suggests Scorgie. Also talk about usage, too. You might be in the wrong plan, as things have changed since 2020, and you might not need as much as you did during the lockdowns. Keehn says: “That’s hundreds of dollars a year. People may say, ‘But I’m going to have to sit on hold with the phone company for hours.’ Maybe you will, but just sit on hold while you’re watching Netflix,” she suggests. How to save on cell phone bills: Check your bill and cut what you don’t need

Check your phone bill: Has a signup bonus promotion expired because you forgot to renew it, resulting in higher fees? Are you paying for directory listings you don’t use? Those charges add up, notes Keehn. Also, look into family plans and getting rid of services you don’t use, like international calls for example. Also, in your settings, check for the apps that are running in the background, which can eat up a ton of data unknowingly when you’re out and about not connected to wifi.

These Two Pantry Items Took My At-Home Movie Nights to the Next Level

Well, the cold weather is finally here, and instead of bar hopping and lounging in the park, these days, it’s pretty tempting to plop down on the couch, put on some Netflix, and have a cozy movie night at home. We Tested (and Rated) Three Flavors of Banza’s Chickpea-Based Protein Waffles — Here’s How They Stacked Up

We know life can get pretty hectic, which is why we’re trying out different products on your behalf. (Kind of like our sister site Apartment Therapy’s Personal Shopper!) What We Tested: In this inaugural installment of The Test Kitchn, we’re taking a look at the three new protein waffles from editor-loved pantry brand Banza. Banza makes chickpea- and bean-based products including mac ‘n’ cheese, pizzas, pasta, rice, and, most recently, protein waffles. They’re on a mission to get more people in the States to eat chickpeas and beans, since they’re “Good for your health [and] good for the planet’s health.” You’ve probably seen boxes of Banza’s gluten-free chickpea pasta in supermarket aisles, but they’re constantly expanding with new shapes and products, which is why we’re always excited whenever there’s a launch.

This week, we have Ian Burke, senior commerce editor for The Kitchn (me); Quinn Fish, cleaning and organizing editor; April Song, co-op partner manager; and Chanel Fetaz, director of product design and UX. I signed up to test these waffles since I’m a huge fan of anything packed with extra protein, while April already liked Banza’s protein pasta. Chanel was curious to try something that “sounded unique yet familiar,” and Quinn loves chickpeas and waffles, but hadn’t had waffles since she was a kid. “I’m also always looking for ways to add more protein to my diet (sans meat),” she explained.

Banza Protein Waffle Variety Pack: These gluten-free protein waffles have 10 grams of protein per serving (which is two waffles), and contain egg but are free from all other major allergens. They’re also vegetarian (but not vegan) and you can cook them in a toaster, oven, pan, or air fryer. The variety pack comes with a box of each flavor — Homestyle, Blueberry, and Chocolate Chip — however, it’s important to note that all the waffles are available separately, too.

How We Tested: We fired these bad boys up per package instructions in our office kitchen’s toaster oven — and only managed to blow a fuse twice because our outlets are fussy — and tested them all plain and with a little maple syrup. Since we wanted to make sure we got to taste the actual waffles, we skipped any more complicated toppings that might have masked the waffles’ flavors. We also didn’t give them any slack just because they’re made with chickpeas — in other words, we judged them just like any other frozen waffles and didn’t hold back.

Homestyle Protein Waffles

The Homestyle Protein Waffles were our combined favorite by far, which we gave an almost perfect rating. These were easy to eat and tasted the most like the frozen waffles we grew up eating, and were pleasantly crispy on the outside and soft in the center. They’re a little darker than the neon-yellow frozen waffles you might be used to but tasted just as good. (Chanel even thought she picked up a hint of coconut with these!)

Blueberry Protein Waffles

Next up were the Blueberry Protein Waffles, which were our least favorite. The blueberry flavor didn’t exactly come through in spades here — in fact, April felt that she couldn’t even taste blueberries at all. Our combined rating was two stars, mostly because we felt there wasn’t enough blueberry flavor. However, they were similar to the Homestyle waffles, so if plain is what you’re looking for, these might be for you.

Chocolate Chip Protein Waffles:

Last up were the Chocolate Chip Protein Waffles, which were our second favorite of the three. While these weren’t the most chocolatey waffles we’ve ever had, the flavor came through a lot more than the Blueberry ones, and even for someone like myself who doesn’t like chocolate (I know, I know: How could anyone not like chocolate?), I found them pretty tasty and not overly sweet. Plus, with the addition of some syrup and chocolate chips from a bag, a stack of these could make a pretty solid — and protein-packed — dessert-for-breakfast situation.

Good to Know: These took a touch longer in the toaster oven than the package instructions suggested, but that probably has to do more with individual ovens than anything else. Our advice? Err on the side of under-toasting them while you dial your time and temperature in, because you can always toss them back in to finish crisping — but you can’t unburn a charred waffle.

From groceries to flights to mobile data: Why is Canada so expensive? – MoneySense

That doesn’t mean everything costs more in Canada, says David Soberman, a professor of marketing and Canadian national chair of strategic marketing at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management. Canadians may pay more than Americans for the same basket of goods, he says, but we pay less than people in some other countries, like Switzerland.

Why do we pay what we do? That’s a difficult question to answer. The reasons are complex and vary depending on the type of good or service. Let’s look at some of the main contributors to Canada’s cost of living, why they are as expensive as they are, and steps you can take to reduce those costs.

Why are groceries so expensive in Canada?

There are a few reasons groceries cost so much in Canada, says Soberman. It’s expensive for companies to ship food products across a country as large as ours, and those costs are reflected in what you pay in stores, he says. But a highly concentrated grocery industry is also a big contributing factor.

Canada’s grocery market is dominated by just a few companies. Domestically, there are three big players: Loblaws, Metro and Sobeys. (Some chains, such as Save-On-Foods in Western Canada, compete on a regional basis.) The next largest retailers for grocery sales are Walmart and Costco. Together, these five companies account for more than three-quarters of all food sales in Canada, according to Canada’s Competition Bureau. In 2023, 49% of Canadians report buying groceries from Loblaws or one of its sister stores.

Critics argue such concentration allows the dominant companies to participate in anti-competitive practices that ultimately harm consumers through higher prices. In grocery, this takes the form of fixing bread prices, preventing competitors from selling certain products, or collectively deciding when to freeze grocery prices—and when to unfreeze them. It’s a problem experts say applies to other industries, such as telecommunications and air travel.

When Canada’s Competition Act was introduced, in 1986, there were at least eight large grocery chains in Canada, each owned by a different company. Since then, more than a dozen major mergers and acquisitions have reduced the level of competition. Today, three big supermarket companies own several smaller chains, including discount brands that could be mistaken for rivals: Loblaws has No Frills, Sobeys has FreshCo and Metro has Food Basics, for example.

How does Canada allow for three big grocers to reign? “The law in Canada typically will not allow the Bureau to intervene in these deals, as they are generally seen as unlikely to have a significant impact on prices and other dimensions of competition,” states a Competition Bureau report. “In the case of a major city or suburb, with five or six different grocery stores nearby, it can be hard to prove that removing one option will cause prices to go up significantly.”

Another underlying issue is that, for many decades, the prevailing view was that “as a small, but large country, we need to accept lower levels of competition to achieve a scale that is necessary to serve the various markets,” says Keldon Bester, executive director of the Canadian Anti-Monopoly Project (CAMP). Over time, that belief has led to fewer and fewer options for consumers, he says.

Trader Joe’s President Addresses Self-Checkout Rumors | Entrepreneur

If you’re looking for a quicker way to get in and out of your favorite discount grocery store, you might be out of luck.

On Monday, Trader Joe’s president Jon Basalone responded to rumors that the grocery chain would be adding self-checkout lanes on a Q&A episode of the company’s in-house podcast.

“I have a bunch of rumors that I would like to prove true or false,” interviewer Matt Sloan tells Basalone. “Are we ready? True or false, coming soon, self-checkout.”

The president had a very clear-cut — and heartwarming — response.

“That’s as false as false can be because we believe in people, and we’re not trying to get rid of our crew members for efficiency’s sake or whatever [the] reasons are people put self-checkout in,” he said bluntly.

Basalone joked that he could never implement the technology because he personally has had difficulty using it when trying to get out of a store.

“I couldn’t get the thing to scan … and then the person came over and was trying to explain to me,” he laughed. “I’m like, I do this for a living, and I can’t get this thing to work.”

Though self-checkout aisles won’t be hitting the front of Trader Joe’s stores anytime soon, Basalone did speak hopefully about the future of the grocery chain.

“We’re going to keep doing what we’re doing, but we’re going to grow. And so the newness comes from the new customers we’re going to be able to reach, the new products that we’re going to see on our shelves, the new opportunities for the crew members who get promoted and get to run those stores into the future,” he explained. “It’s not crazy new ideas like the robot in the aisle that answers questions and helps to clean up spills. It’s simpler than that and actually more exciting than that.”

The California-based grocer has been under scrutiny lately after several recalls have forced stores to pull popular items off of shelves, including rock contamination in several cookie flavors and multigrain crackers containing metal.

The chain operates roughly 560 locations in the United States across 40 states.

The latest version of the JustBOGOS app includes a variety of speed and stability enhancements, enabling it to become the most user-friendly, in-store grocery savings app. After all, who wouldn’t want a simple, consolidated list of all BOGO’s from multiple supermarkets, at their fingertips while on-the-go?

Since the launch of the app just several months ago, the response has been tremendous. It has received such positive feedback that new features are in the works and the growth for JustBOGOS looks more promising than ever.

The app allows Users to browse All BOGO (Buy One, Get One) sales across multiple local grocery stores, in a consolidated, quick-reading list sorted by supermarket and department. While browsing this list of All BOGO’s, Users can select the items they intend to purchase and they are added to their JustBOGOS Shopping List, another in-app feature, for quick access while in the supermarket.

The app also sends Custom BOGO Alerts. Here’s how it works: Users add their favorite or most frequently purchased groceries to their virtual JustBOGOS Cart. The moment any of these items goes BOGO at a supermarket in the User’s location, they receive an alert. With the JustBOGOS app, the days of missing favorite grocery BOGO sales are long gone.

The Shopping List feature consolidates all selected BOGO’s from multiple supermarkets into a simple, categorized list. A Notepad is also included for free-form reminders. All User data and settings from within the app are instantly synced and can be accessed from any desktop computer, tablet, or web browser within any mobile device.
