  • NBA roundup: Nikola Jokic’s return sparks Nuggets past Clippers

    Nikola Jokic returned from a 16-game absence to produce 31 points and 12 rebounds, leading the host Denver Nuggets over the Los Angeles Clippers 122-109 on Friday night.

    Jokic, who had been sidelined since sustaining a left knee injury at Miami on Dec. 29, shot 13-for-17 from the foul line to help Denver win its second in a row. The Nuggets went 10-6 while he was out.

    Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 22 points, Peyton Watson contributed 21 and Jamal Murray finished with 20 points for Denver.

    The Clippers were led by James Harden, who recorded 25 points and nine assists. Kawhi Leonard scored 21 points as Los Angeles saw its three-game win streak end.

    Lakers 142, Wizards 111

    Luka Doncic punctuated his sixth triple-double of the season with 37 points as visiting Los Angeles rolled past Washington.

    Doncic showed no ill effects from the injury he sustained when falling off Cleveland’s elevated court on Wednesday, reaching a triple-double by halftime with 26 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds. He finished with 13 assists and 11 boards.

    Los Angeles’ Deandre Ayton posted 28 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while LeBron James chipped in 20 points and six assists. Malaki Branham scored 17 points as the Wizards failed in a bid for their first three-game winning streak of the season.

    Celtics 112, Kings 93

    Payton Pritchard tossed in a game-high 29 points and Neemias Queta had 10 points and 15 rebounds to lead Boston to a victory over visiting Sacramento.

    Pritchard made 12 of 16 shots from the field, including 5 of 6 3-point attempts. Anfernee Simons and Baylor Scheierman each added 16 points for the Celtics, who didn’t have leading scorer Jaylen Brown (hamstring/knee).

    Zach LaVine scored 17 points and Maxime Raynaud logged 14 points and 14 rebounds, but the Kings lost their eighth game in a row.

    Knicks 127, Trail Blazers 97

    Karl-Anthony Towns posted 14 points and 20 rebounds New York, which continued surging with a wire-to-wire win over visiting Portland.

    Jalen Brunson scored a team-high 26 points for the Knicks, who ended the month with five straight wins following a 2-9 skid that began Dec. 31. OG Anunoby (24 points) and Josh Hart (20) also contributed to New York’s offense.

    Shaedon Sharpe scored 26 points for the Trail Blazers, who concluded a winless three-game East Coast road trip as they lost their fourth straight overall.

    Pistons 131, Warriors 124

    Cade Cunningham scored 29 points and handed out 11 assists as Detroit withstood a fourth-quarter rally to beat Golden State in San Francisco.

    Jalen Duren added 21 points and 13 rebounds for the Pistons, who earned their third win four games. Duncan Robinson scored 15 points on five 3-pointers.

    Golden State star Stephen Curry exited the game late in the third quarter due to right knee soreness and did not return. He scored a team-high 23 points.

    Magic 130, Raptors 120

    Desmond Bane scored 16 of his 32 points in the fourth quarter and sank a season-best seven 3-pointers, lifting host Orlando to a victory over Toronto.

    Anthony Black scored 25 points and hit all 14 of his free-throw attempts for the Magic, who outscored the Raptors 44-21 in the fourth quarter. Wendell Carter Jr. chipped in with 23 points and seven rebounds.

    Brandon Ingram led all scorers with 35 points, while Scottie Barnes totaled 19 points, nine rebounds, six assists and four blocks, but Toronto’s road winning streak ended at four games.

    Suns 126, Cavaliers 113

    Dillon Brooks scored 17 of his 27 points in Phoenix’s 45-point third quarter as the host Suns handled Cleveland.

    Jordan Goodwin put up 17 points and made five 3-pointers while Collin Gillespie added 16 points for the Suns, who won their third straight. Phoenix sank a season-high 23 3-pointers in 48 attempts.

    De’Andre Hunter scored 17 points and Donovan Mitchell and Jaylon Tyson added 16 points each for the Cavaliers, who had won a season-high five straight. Mitchell committed eight turnovers.

    Pelicans 114, Grizzlies 106

    Rookie Derik Queen scored 22 points, grabbed nine rebounds and dished out seven assists as New Orleans turned a dominant third quarter into a victory over visiting Memphis.

    Saddiq Bey added 22 points and eight rebounds and Zion Williamson scored 21 as the Pelicans defeated the Grizzlies for the second time in eight days, marking their third win in four games overall.

    Jaren Jackson Jr. and Cam Spencer each scored 16 points for the Grizzlies, who have lost five in a row.

    Nets 109, Jazz 99

    Egor Demin scored 25 points and collected 10 rebounds to lead Brooklyn past Utah in Salt Lake City.

    Cam Thomas added 21 points to help the Nets end a seven-game losing streak. Day’Ron Sharpe chipped in 16 points and nine rebounds.

    Keyonte George posted 26 points and seven assists while Kyle Filipowski had 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Jazz, who lost their fifth straight game and fell to 1-9 in their past 10.

    Deandre Ayton scored 25 points with 13 rebounds and Luka Doncic also had 25 points as the host Los Angeles Lakers turned improved defense into a much-needed 110-93 win over the Toronto Raptors on Sunday night.

    LeBron James scored 24 points as the Lakers won for just the second time in their past seven games, and are 6-9 since Dec. 20, after a 19-7 start to the season. Doncic and Ayton returned after sitting out Saturday’s loss at Portland with injuries.

    Los Angeles gave up a season low in points after allowing an average of 133.5 points while losing their past two games. Ayton was 10 of 10 from the floor after missing one game with a back injury.

    Scottie Barnes scored 22 points and Sandro Mamukelashvili added 20 for the Raptors, who dropped consecutive games for the first time since Dec. 20-21. Former Laker Brandon Ingram scored 19 for Toronto, which lost both games to Los Angeles this season. The Raptors lost center Collin Murray-Boyles to a sprained left thumb in the third quarter. Murray-Boyles finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

    Bulls 124, Nets 102

    Coby White scored 24 points and canned a season-best seven of Chicago’s 20 3-pointers as it earned a split of a weekend home-and-home series with visiting Brooklyn.

    Five other players made it into double figures for the Bulls, who connected on 52.1% of their field goals and dished out a whopping 41 assists. Ayo Dosunmu came off the bench to add 19 points, while Matas Buzelis and Nikola Vucevic each tallied 17 points. Jalen Smith chipped in 12 points, Kevin Huerter collected 11 and Tre Jones notched 10 points and 10 assists in a reserve role. Vucevic (11 rebounds) and Smith (10) each added double-doubles.

    Nolan Traore came off the bench to score 16 points for the Nets, while fellow reserve Jalen Wilson added 14. Rookie Danny Wolf also bagged 14 points, while Nic Claxton contributed 12 and Egor Demin and Tyrese Martin each managed 11 points.

    Hornets 110, Nuggets 87

    Brandon Miller scored 23 points and Charlotte went wire-to-wire, leading by as many as 33 points in beating host Denver.

    Hornets rookie Ryan Kalkbrenner tied a career high with 17 points, while teammates Collin Sexton and Kon Knueppel finished with 14 points each. Tidjane Salaun had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, and LaMelo Ball contributed 10 for Charlotte, which snapped an eight-game losing streak against the Nuggets.

    Denver tied a season low for total points, having lost at home to the Atlanta Hawks on Jan. 9 by the same final score. Jamal Murray led the Nuggets with 16 points but came out of the game with 5:24 left in the third quarter. Julian Strawther scored 15 points, Jalen Pickett contributed 12 and Peyton Watson 11.

    Grizzlies 126, Magic 109

    Rockets 119, Pelicans 110

    Jabari Smith Jr. scored a season-high 32 points, Kevin Durant moved into sixth place on the career scoring list and Amen Thompson provided support with an all-around display as Houston claimed a victory over visiting New Orleans.

    Thompson posted 20 points on 10-of-14 shooting, eight rebounds and six assists. Durant added 18 points and eight assists, and his two free throws with 15 seconds to play pushed Durant past Dirk Nowitzki on the career scoring list. Alperen Sengun chipped in 21 points and, like Smith and Thompson, secured eight rebounds.

    Trey Murphy III paced the Pelicans with 21 points while Zion Williamson posted 20 points. Rookie Derik Queen chipped in 15 points and five assists for the Pelicans, who have lost 13 of 15.

    Trail Blazers 117, Kings 100

    Deni Avdija returned from a three-game absence due to a back injury to score a game-high 30 points, Toumani Camara shoehorned nine of his 17 points into a key second-quarter run and Portland held host Sacramento at arm’s length through the second half for a victory.

    Shaedon Sharpe chipped in with 27 points and Donovan Clingan snatched a game-high 17 rebounds as part of a double-double with 21 points for the Trail Blazers, who used a third straight win to reach .500 for the first time since mid-November. Portland has won 10 of its last 13 games.

    Reserve Malik Monk and Russell Westbrook had 23 points apiece and Zach LaVine added 18 for the Kings, who saw a four-game winning streak come to an end with a third consecutive loss to the Trail Blazers this season.

    Ja Morant returned to the lineup after missing the previous six games with a right calf contusion and had 24 points and a season-high 13 assists to lead the Memphis Grizzlies to a 126-109 victory over the Orlando Magic on Sunday in London.

    Morant, the subject of trade discussions ahead of the Feb. 5 NBA trade deadline, made 7 of 13 shots, including 3 of 4 from long range. He was appearing in just his 19th game of the season.

    Jock Landale came off the bench to contribute 21 points and eight rebounds for the Grizzlies, while Jaren Jackson Jr. finished with 17 points and five boards. Rookie Cedric Coward scored 13 points.

    Orlando, which beat Memphis 118-111 Thursday in Berlin, was led by Anthony Black with 19 points and six assists. Wendell Carter Jr. had 18 points and seven boards and Paolo Banchero finished with 16 points, nine assists and eight rebounds. Franz Wagner had 14 points.

    Morant played at an All-Star level from the outset. He had six assists in the opening six minutes and finished the first half with 20 points and 10 assists in 15 minutes to pace the Grizzlies to a 72-53 lead at the break.

    While Memphis led by 19 at halftime, it had built a 33-point cushion midway through the second quarter with a 23-7 run. Orlando regrouped to finish the half on a 23-9 run.

    But in the second half the Grizzlies, who had squandered large leads in their previous three games, never allowed the Magic to close the gap. Although Orlando trimmed the Memphis advantage to 16 points to start the third quarter on a 3-pointer from Black, the Grizzlies consistently pushed their lead to 20 or more until the waning minutes.

    The London matchup had an All-Star Game feel. Commissioner Adam Silver was in attendance, as were former league All-Stars Isaiah Thomas, Dirk Nowitzki, Steve Nash, Pau Gasol and Detlef Schrempf.

  • Grizzlies star G Ja Morant to return vs. Magic in London

    Memphis Grizzlies star guard Ja Morant is available to return from a six-game absence in Sunday’s game against the Orlando Magic in London.

    The subject of trade rumors, Morant has been sidelined since Jan. 2 with a right calf contusion.

    Morant’s contract — a five-year, $197 million deal — expires after the 2027-28 season. He’s eligible for a three-year, $178 million extension next summer.

    Without signing him to an extension, any team taking on Morant at the February trade deadline would owe him the balance of his existing deal: the remainder of his $39.4 million salary for the current season, $42.2 million next season and $44.9 million for 2027-28.

    The No. 2 overall pick in the 2019 draft, Morant is playing fewer minutes this season, averaging a career-low 28.3 to go with 19 points and 7.6 assists per game.

    Morant, 26, has career averages of 22.4 points, 7.4 assists, 4.6 rebounds and one steal per game.

    Jamal Murray had 23 points, Nikola Jokic notched his second straight triple-double to start the season and the Nuggets beat the Phoenix Suns 133-111 on Saturday night in Denver’s home opener.

    Christian Braun scored 20 points and Aaron Gordon had 17 points two nights after posting a career-high 50 for Denver, which had seven players score in double figures and shot 51.2% (43 of 84) from the field.

    Jokic finished with 14 points, 15 assists and 14 rebounds. He took just eight shots, making five, and didn’t attempt a field goal until a goaltending call on Phoenix with 2:26 left in the second quarter. His first shot attempt was a free throw with 4:18 left in the first half.

    Devin Booker led the Suns with 31 points, Grayson Allen scored 17 and Dillon Brooks had 15. Phoenix shot just 43.2% (38 of 88) from the field.

    Thunder 117, Hawks 100

    Chet Holmgren overcame back soreness that almost kept him out to produce a double-double and help Oklahoma City remain unbeaten with a win in Atlanta.

    Holmgren was listed as questionable on the pregame injury report and spent time rubbing his back during dead-ball situations. But he played through discomfort to score a season-high 31 points and grab 11 rebounds. He was 8-for-12 shooting from the floor (6-for-8 on 3-pointers).

    Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 17 of his 30 points in the third quarter. Atlanta’s Nickeil Alexander-Walker led the team with 17 points. Trae Young scored 15 points and had 10 assists, his league-best 22nd straight game with at least 15 points and five assists.

    Bulls 110, Magic 98

    Josh Giddey scored a team-high 21 points, five reserves combined for 58 more and Chicago held off host Orlando to win back-to-back games to start the season.

    Jalen Smith and Ayo Dosunmu led the Bulls bench crew with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Starters Nikola Vucevic (15 points) and Tre Jones (13), and reserves Patrick Williams (12) and Kevin Huerter (11) made it seven players — including four backups — in double figures.

    Despite 7-for-21 shooting, Paolo Banchero was the game’s leading scorer with 24 points for the Magic, who lost at home for the second consecutive night. Orlando went just 3-for-24 from beyond the arc.

    76ers 125, Hornets 121

    Quentin Grimes had 24 points off the bench and drilled a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 15 seconds left to lift host Philadelphia over Charlotte for the 76ers’ second straight win to open the season.

    After trailing by 10 points with less than six minutes left, the 76ers finished the game on a 23-9 run. Tyrese Maxey led Philadelphia with 28 points and nine assists, while Joel Embiid added 20 points.

    LaMelo Ball had 27 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists for Charlotte, while Collin Sexton added 21 points. Rookies Ryan Kalkbrenner and Kon Knueppel scored 14 points apiece, while Sion James had 10 points off the bench for the Hornets.

    Grizzlies 128, Pacers 103

    Rookie Cedric Coward erupted for 27 points behind a torrid 3-point shooting effort as Memphis rolled past visiting Indiana.

    In just his third NBA game, Coward knocked down all six of his 3-point attempts off the bench. Ja Morant added 19 points and eight assists, anchoring a clean offensive game which saw the Grizzlies commit just four turnovers.

    The Pacers got little consistent offense outside of Bennedict Mathurin, who finished with 26 points before exiting with a sore right foot. Aaron Nesmith added 15 while Pascal Siakam and Obi Toppin each scored 13.
