  • Learning Opportunities for Teens in the Upstate

    Ready or not, your teenager is heading out into the real world soon! Fortunately, the Upstate provides educational things to do for teens all year long outside of the general education classroom. If your teen is interested in a career in science, government, or the arts, there are several local options for them to gain experience.

    The Upstate is home to multiple museums that offer teenagers the chance to learn more in-depth information and opportunities to volunteer for a behind-the-scenes look at what these museums and centers offer. For example, Roper Mountain Science Center offers volunteer and intern opportunities for teenagers. Plus, places like the Spartanburg History Museum offer summer camps just for teens.

    Learning Opportunities Galore at the Library

    The first place to begin searching for learning opportunities for your teen is the local library. Spartanburg County Public Libraries offer educational programs for teens (how to get a job, test prep courses, etc.), volunteer programs, and internship opportunities.

    Plus, the Headquarters Library has SPARKspace, a public makerspace with librarians who will teach your teen everything from 3D printing to sewing. Greenville County Public Libraries also offer teen programs and homeschool programs.

    Life Skills and Career Preparation Opportunities

    If your teen has not decided on a career path, look for learning opportunities that open the doors to multiple careers and teach life skills. For example, the Benjamin Franklin Experience in Greenville is a summer program designed to help teens consider different careers.

    If you are looking for leadership experience, there are several options. Both the Spartanburg Parks and Greenville Parks systems offer different teen leadership and scholastic programs.  The YMCA of Greenville hosts SC Youth in Government. Additionally, teens can become a part of Junior Achievement of Upstate South Carolina.

    Test Preparation

    For those parents looking for test preparation courses, consider Sylvan Learning Centers, which has locations throughout the Upstate. Sylvan offers test prep courses all year, but they also offer a variety of STEM courses and camps during the summer.

    Lifeguard and Boater Certification

    Teenagers wanting lifeguard certification can take a course at their local YMCA. If your teenager wants to earn his/her boater certification, you can find information about the process here. In South Carolina, those under 16 years of age are legally required to pass a boating education course before operating a personal watercraft (including jet skis).

    Language Learning Opportunities

    German School Upstate offers classes in Spartanburg (Spartanburg Day School) and Greenville (Shannon Forest Christian School). Additionally, Spartanburg Country libraries has a teen program called “Language Learning Teens.”

    Learning About Animals

    Teens interested in animals can volunteer at either the Greenville Humane Society or the Spartanburg Humane Society. In addition to volunteering, Greenville Zoo hosts career day events for teens throughout the year.

    Learning the Arts

    There’s an abundance of learning opportunities in the arts in the Upstate. Your teen can take acting classes at Spartanburg Youth Theatre and South Carolina Children’s Theatre, as well as summer classes at USC Upstate. For musicians, Lawson Academy offers several courses to help individuals perfect their skills. For aspiring artists, Spartanburg Art Museum and Greenville Center for Creative Arts offer classes just for teens.

    These programs are all specially designed for teens to ensure they will have fun and learn at the same time. What’s even more exciting? Many of these places offer flexible scheduling, homeschool classes, and a wide variety of summer camps just for teens!

  • You Can Golf With the Family at 3’s Greenville Golf & Grubhouse

    If you are looking for a place to have some fun, get some phys-ed time for your home-based learners, or just a place to squeeze in a date night, we’ve found a place for you. 3’s Greenville Golf and Grubhouse is conveniently located just south of Downtown Greenville, and we went to check out this family-friendly golf course. 

    It’s been a long time, but having spent most of my adolescent years just a mile from a golf course in Florida provided me with ample opportunity for time on a fairway. This was my first time on a golf course since moving to Greenville, and my son’s first time on a real course, so I was excited at the opportunity to share a new experience with him. Visitors to 3’s have two different options: you can choose the 12-hole, the par 3 course, or the 17,000 square foot “Humps & Bumps” putting course. Let’s talk about the difference.

    The 12 Hole Course at 3’s Greenville Golf and Grubhouse

    One of the things that makes this course family-friendly is that each of the 12 holes is a par 3. For those of you who are new to golf, the “par” is the number of swings it takes you to get that little golf ball into the almost-as-small hole. On a typical course, it could be a par 4 or 5 with 18 holes, which makes the game last a lot longer.

    A Helpfully Designed Course

    The way the course at 3’s has been designed allows players never to be too far from the clubhouse. The course being a par 3 also makes it seem less intimidating for people who are new to golf, or are rusty, like I was. It had been almost 20 years since I had played more than putt-putt, and I still managed to make par on one of the holes. That was more than I expected I would be able to after all this time. 

    If you are new to golf or need a few pointers, 3’s offers instruction programs. There are clinics for women and children as well as open clinics.

    And David Lee and Gravity Golf have been endorsed by quite a few impressive golfing legends. There are half-day workshops, 3-day classes, and even golf and yoga retreats.

    The Huge Sand Trap

    Towards the 12th and final hole, you’ll see a behemoth of a sand trap. The kind of hazard that would give Tiger Woods nightmares. They would be justified too, as this is (I’m told) the deepest sand trap in all of South Carolina!

    Humps & Bumps “Himalayas” Putting Course

    Think of this as mini-golf, minus the silly themes and fake grass. The natural obstacles on this mini-course are made up of, you guessed it, humps and bumps! It’s easy enough for a child to play and enjoy, and still challenging enough for an adult.

    While we were there, a family was enjoying the putting course, with a group of (what appeared to be) seasoned golfers playing behind them. That’s the kind of thing I believe would make 3’s owner, Davis Sezna, very happy. He wants 3’s to be a place where everyone can come enjoy golf, and that’s what I witnessed while there.

    One of the other things I noticed was that the way the putting course is designed, it wraps around the clubhouse. If you had tween or teenage kids who wanted to enjoy the putting course, you could sit back in the shade of an umbrella and relax while they played. If one were so inclined, one might also enjoy a frosty signature cocktail from the clubhouse.

    Date Night at 3’s

    This could also be the perfect spot for a date night or a double date. While the guys play, the ladies can sit on the patio and enjoy a drink. Might I suggest the “3’s Transfusion,” a Welch’s grape juice cocktail made with Tito’s vodka. This was my favorite, garnished with frozen grapes it was the perfect drink to cool you off after a warm day on the course. 

    The Grubhouse

    The Grubhouse at 3’s is a laid-back spot with firepits, Adirondack chairs, and a menu full of favorites for all ages. Adults can dig into smash burgers, flatbread pizza, nachos, or a loaded Nathan’s hot dog, while kids will love classics like cheeseburgers, grilled cheese, chicken tenders, and hot dogs. Whether it’s after a round of golf or a fun family night out, The Grubhouse serves up comfort food with a cool, welcoming vibe. Just know that tee times and grubhouse hours vary, so be sure to check ahead if you plan to eat and play.

  • Throw Paint on Walls at Greenville’s New Color Me Greenville!

    Where can you splatter paint on a canvas, throw glow-in-the-dark paint against a wall, custom paint your own shoes, or even decorate a cake? At the brand new Color Me Greenville in Greenville, SC! We tried it out and have all the fun details.

    Color Me Greenville is a brand new business located minutes from downtown Greenville, SC and is the city’s only dedicated splatter paint place – regular paint and glow-in-the-dark paint. My daughters (ages 11 and 14) absolutely loved our time there. The owners are so lovely and the entire concept is fun and whimsical and something you will for sure want to do again.

    About Color Me Greenville

    When Susan McMakin and her husband tried splatter painting in South Korea years ago, they thought it was awesome and in the back of their mind, considered it may be a cool idea for Greenville. They then tried similar spots in Charlotte and Atlanta and decided to start up a dedicated place where people could come and throw paint on a canvas for fun in Greenville. But since Susan is a baker and cake decorator – she owns Couture Cakes, who I’m sure you’ve heard of – she wanted to also add in cake and cupcake decorating as an option so Color Me Greenville was born. 

    The shop is run by Susan and her daughter, Eleanor, a senior at the University of South Carolina and a creative entrepreneur. Between the two of them, they’ve managed to put together quite an awesome venue off of N. Pleasantburg Drive in Greenville that is completely worth the trip.

    The place is fantastic for a group party, birthday, date night, or just a fun family outing. 

    Splatter Painting

    If you’ve never done splatter painting or have any idea what I’m talking about or cannot even draw a stick figure, don’t worry, you’ll do just fine at Color Me Greenville. It’s more about the experience than the finished art (even though the canvases of my daughters turned out absolutely amazing) and the experience is certainly worthy of a wow factor. 

    Splatter painting is just like it sounds: you literally throw paint at the canvas. You can also shoot it out of a water gun. Or you can use a paintbrush if you like. Or you can use a squishy ball and slingshot. Whatever you choose, I promise you’ll have an absolute blast doing it.

    We did both the regular splatter painting and the glow-in-the-dark splatter painting, which I’ll get to in a minute. For the regular splatter painting, we wore ponchos and booties for our shoes, gloves, and protective eyewear, which I promptly forgot to put on my eyes and which remained on my head. Whoops. 

    How it works is that you have a canvas on the wall and a variety of paint toys and paint colors. Susan showed us some options for using the slingshot and water guns, and then we started throwing paint. If you’ve never done this, it feels freeing! There are no rules in splatter painting. You can throw paint right from the cup or bottle or use your hands to paint the canvas or use the water fun. It doesn’t matter. We live in a world of rules, and to have none is a lot of fun. 

    The splatter painting sessions are about 35 minutes, but you will want to stay longer. At least we did. But I think the time limit is actually good because if not, you’ll just throw so many colors at your canvas because it’s so much fun, and it will be all brown. If you like brown, that’s cool, though. 

    Glow-in-the-Dark Splatter Painting

    This is where it gets real at Color Me Greenville. The splatter painting is done under black lights, and all the paint lights up! It was so fun to do this and such a unique experience. My daughters figured out they could put paint on their hands and smash them up against each other’s full-body suits. It was hilarious.

    Susan told me these sessions are their best-selling ones, and wow, I can absolutely see why. You can do this nowhere else in Greenville. The studio has darkening shades, which pull down, so they can hold these sessions anytime, day or night. The setup is the same, but I think the paint is different. You can book these sessions along with the classic splatter painting or even cake decorating.

    Sneaker Painting & Cake Decorating 

    If you’ve ever wanted to paint your own sneakers, this is the spot to go. They have a ton of items to give your shoes a glow-up like charms, glow-in-the-dark laces, and of course, endless paint colors. Sneaker painting sessions start at $45. 

    Then there’s cake and cupcake decorating, which is really such a fun night out for date night or with friends or your kids. You’ll be decorating a Couture Cake or cupcake just for you. They also offer lots of different classes, many of which are seasonal or themed. Be sure to check the website for updated information and to get a spot.

    Birthday Parties & Group Events

    One of the first things I thought of when we started our splatter painting session was how cool it would be to have a birthday party here. It would be so fun for everyone! You can book Color Me Greenville for this very purpose for an hour and can add time in 30-minute increments for a minimum group of six people (even if you want to book it and have less than six people, you will be charged for six people due to having the space all to yourselves).

    You can book the splatter paint sessions or cake/cupcake decorating for parties. They allow you to bring in your own food as well. 

    If you are looking for something specific, just give them a call. They are the nicest people and are open to how to make your time there even better.

    Classic splatter sessions start at $35/person, and glow-in-the-dark splatter sessions start at $50/person. Classes vary in price, so just check the website to see which fits best.

    When you pull into the parking lot, Color Me Greenville is next to the radio room. They don’t have a sign up yet, but you can see through the window the name, and there’s a painted Maine Coon cat near the door.

    Accessible Playgrounds 

    There are several playgrounds in Greenville that have accessible equipment but the brand new Brooks’ Playground will be the city’s first fully inclusive playground, and it opens on Tuesday, September 30th. It’s designed so kids of any and all abilities can climb, swing, and play together.

    Local entertainment venues have made significant improvements to aid in inclusive and accessible options for all guests. 

    The Children’s Museum of the Upstate 

    The Children’s Museum of the Upstate is an example of someplace that is always seeking to expand its accessibility efforts.  An elevator and wheelchair-accessible walkway allow all kids to reach the top of the Climber, and similar to the BSW Arena, sensory bags are available to help children regulate.

    Bon Secours Wellness Arena 

    If you’ve ever been to an event at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena, you know it can get pretty loud. The arena has an awesome Sensory Suite in Section 105, a space designed to help guests with sensory sensitivities feel comfortable at events. Families who may have skipped a hockey game or concert in the past now have a place where their child can enjoy the excitement without being overwhelmed.

    Outfitted with noise-canceling headphones, fidget tools, softer lighting, and quiet zones, the suite makes it possible for everyone to share the same live experience—without stress. They also offer Sensory Bags (right outside Section 117)  that families can borrow during events that include things like fidget toys, headphones, and antiglare glasses.

    Additionally, you can purchase Sensory Suite tickets by emailing ticketing@bswarena.com. The Sensory Suite is open for shows that have a 360-stage as well as when the Suite is within sightlines of the show. The price of the Sensory Suite varies from show to show, there is no additional cost for fans to utilize the suite (ticket prices align with the cost of the seats directly under the Suite, in the same Section.) 

    South Carolina Children’s Theatre

    A staple in the community for both families and performers, the SC Children’s Theatre aims to be the most accessible theatre in South Carolina. They designed their new building with that vision in mind and, making sure no physical barriers preventing anyone from taking part in what the theatre offers.

    “In the past year, we’ve taken significant steps to deepen accessibility across the organization,” said SC Children’s Theatre CEO Katie O’Kelly.

    “This includes launching a more accessible website, creating sensory-friendly viewing areas in both of our theatres, and developing new systems to better welcome and support all patrons. These strides were made possible thanks to the generous support of Greenville Women Giving, the Community Foundation of Greenville, Messer Construction Foundation, the South Carolina Arts Commission, and nonprofit partners like AbleSC, who share our commitment to breaking down barriers.”

    The theatre has even expanded the role of their Patron Services Manager to also serve as Accessibility Coordinator, meaning that she is in charge of making sure accessibility is worked into every decision, program, and production at the theatre. 

    The SC Children’s Theatre offers a hearing loop system to make the experience better for guests with hearing aids, helping remove background noise so there is clear sound right in the device. Just ask for it at the Box Office. They also have sign language interpreters and accessible seating available to make sure everyone can enjoy the show.

    Dance Without Limits

    Dance Without Limits was founded by Beth Bradley, who wanted to create a space that was welcoming to all kids, regardless of ability. But here’s why Beth decided to create a dance studio that focused on including kids of all ages and abilities: she’s the oldest of 18 kids. Fifteen of her siblings are adopted. And her parents specifically adopted children that often had some kind of limitations in their life. DWL has specific classes for special needs students and those with disabilities.

    There are some fantastic options to visit and explore the outdoors that are accessible to everyone. 

    YMCA Camp Greenville’s Spectrum & Stargazers Camp 

    YMCA Camp Greenville’s Spectrum & Stargazers Camp creates a supportive, outdoor adventure family camp tailored to families that include children with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental needs. It ensures campers can participate in hiking, stargazing, and camp traditions with the right support while parents know their child is fully included.

    Greenville Zoo 

    This ADA-accessible zoo has teamed up with KultureCity to make visits easier for everyone. Guests can pick up a free sensory kit that includes noise-canceling headphones, fidget toys, a “feelings card” to help express emotions, and a lanyard so staff can easily recognize and support visitors with sensory needs.

    Dolly Cooper Park Accessible Kayak Launch

    The accessible kayak launch at Dolly Cooper Park just outside of Greenville allows boats to enter and exit the water safely. Plus, it’s a really pretty stretch of the river to paddle!

    NC Waterfall Tour 

    Because I just love waterfalls and want everyone to see them, I created this no-hike waterfall tour in North Carolina as a day trip option. I made it because my mother-in-law, who has limited mobility, was visiting and I wanted to do something fun with her and my daughters that involved the outdoors. We all had such an amazing time and since that trip, I’ve added some more places to the route. It’s definitely a day trip from Greenville but an awesome opportunity to enjoy the beauty of nature without any hiking.

    Caesar’s Head State Park This is one of the prettiest overlooks in Greenville County and it’s accessible via a short walk on a paved trail from the parking area. It’s especially beautiful in the fall – just get there early as it does get crowded. Look for the hawks as they migrate that same time of year.

    Even when it’s not yours to do, it can make you miserable. Sometimes a change of scenery can help with getting those brain waves flowing. We asked our readers where they like to study, and they had tons of great suggestions. We also threw some suggestions that can also be used for homeschooling families who need to get away from home or freelance remote workers who need an inspiring spot to get work done.

    Local Coffee Shops

    These were popular with our readers, and fortunately, there’s no shortage of them in Greenville.

    Methodical Coffee
    With three very different locations, Greenville’s Methodical Coffee is far from a cookie-cutter corporate coffee chain. Instead, locally roasted beans and sourced ingredients for their menu have made them a favorite with locals.

    Junto Coffee
    Taylors Mill is now home to Junto Coffee. This spacious coffee shop offers everything you need in a good study spot. The tables and chairs are spread out, and they offer a plethora of indoor and outdoor seating options.

    Scändi Tiny Coffee
    This makes for a great study spot, in my opinion. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there at the grand opening, and you can read all about it in our review. Plenty of outdoor seating makes it easy to find a spot to settle into that homework.

    Coffee Underground
    This coffee shop, hidden away in a basement of a downtown business, is a perfect place to hide from all the noise and chaos of the street. They serve coffee, food, and even wine if you are inclined to sip while you study.

    I love the Coffee Underground because of how private and quiet it is. I get a lot done because there are not many distractions! I also like Junto Coffee because of how open it is and I can find my own little corner there as well

    Homeschooling in the Wild: Offerings of the Greenville Zoo

    Have a homeschooler and need a little time outside, away from all the books and computers? Pick a day and participate in one of the educational programs at the Greenville Zoo. They have lots of special events to help your family learn and enjoy the zoo like story time or with the zoo keepers for questions. They even offer special classes just for homeschoolers. KAG Contributor and local mom Maria Bassett is sharing some of the educational opportunities you’ll find at the Greenville Zoo.

    Sure a trip to the zoo is fun any day, and it can be an educational adventure. Sometimes, though, my kids run from exhibit to exhibit and we never really take the time to read the signs, observe and learn. That’s frustrating, and doesn’t feel very educational. Sometimes we bring along some animal classification work (if you’d like some freebie worksheets checkout this homeschool giveaways site for some options.) 

    But sometimes, it’s really just more fun to listen to the great folks at the zoo, than it is to listen to mom!  That’s why I am so thankful for the many educational gems that the Greenville Zoo offers.  They have so many educational programs, and many of them are completely free with admission.

    Homeschool Days

    The zoo offers a homeschool day once for kids ages 2-11 years old. My two oldest boys love these classes! They get some hands-on time with various animals and critters. (After the class that featured a number of invertebrates, I heard a lot about how they got to touch the hissing cockroach.  Yuck!)

    And they really learn lots of neat facts. Each class costs $8 for homeschool kids and their families. You can find the next date on the Greenville Zoo’s website.

    Tell Me About it Tuesdays

    Free! (with admission) At 10:30 am and 12:30 pm on Tuesdays you will find zoo staff at specific exhibits talking about and answering your questions about the animals they highlight.  Tell Me About it Tuesdays is a great opportunity for homeschool students to get answers straight from the source.

    Zoo Tots

    Need something for your toddler or preschooler? Zoo Tots is designed specifically for kids ages 2-4 years old. These programs are 45 minutes long and give children a chance to explore and engage with crafts, sensory bins, and educational stations.

    There’s also a structured circle time and animal encounter. Prices are $15 for members and $20 for non-members. See Greenville Zoo’s website for dates and times.

    Learning Safari Thursdays

    Want to see some zoo creatures up close?  Check out the Learning Safari Thursdays for kids ages 5-7 years old on Sundays from 3:00-4:30 pm and Mondays from 10:00 – 11:30 am. These are fun, hands-on exhibits. What a great chance for homeschoolers to learn from zoo staff, without the added cost! Program is 1.5 hours. The cost is $20 for members and $25 for non-members.

    Zookeeping Kids

    This is a chance for your 8-11 year olds to see what it’s like to be a zookeeper! Each week will cover a different aspect of a zookeeper’s job, and kids will have the chance to play games, participate in activities and experiments, chat with zookeepers, and have animal encounters up close.

    Programs are 2 hours from 10 am – 12 pm. Price is $25 for members, and $30 for non-members. See the Greenville Zoo’s website for the next date.

    Note: All three of the above free programs meet September through May.

    Career Day

    If you have a 6th-12th grader who shows interest in becoming a zookeeper, then definitely take a visit to Greenville Zoo for Career Day! You’ll get a behind-the-scenes tour of the zoo and even participate in some of the zoo’s daily tasks. Cost is $50 per person. Check the Greenville Zoo’s website for upcoming dates.

    Conservation Lectures

    Families with older children might enjoy the zoo’s free conservation lecture series. The zoo has partnered with Furman to bring educational lectures about conservation efforts for specific animals. Lectures take place at The Children’s Museum of the Upstate, The Upcountry History Museum, or a Greenville Library and are scheduled in the evening. These lectures are totally free!

    Greenville is home to Gravitopia and Sky Zone, both really fun trampoline park with ninja courses, foam pits and extreme. Gravitopia hosts a Club Night for kids 15 and older and Sky Zone has an event called Glow that is similar. And if you’re up for a little drive, Big Air Trampoline Park in Spartanburg just celebrated their 1st birthday and is super cool.     A Greenville Gem: The Sigal Music Museum

    Looking for something to do in Greenville? Have you heard about the Sigal Music Museum? Joining many high-quality museums in Greenville’s Heritage Green, the Sigal Music Museum displays the history of music in the Carolinas through historically and culturally significant instruments. We sent KAG Contributor Anna Artz to the museum so she could find out all the details. Read on and you’ll find out just what you can expect to see and hear at the Sigal Music Museum.

    The Sigal Music Museum, formerly called The Carolina Music Museum, opened its doors in 2018 at the old Coca- cola building at Heritage Green. The music museum is a great addition to the cultural offerings found in downtown Greenville, with a beautiful collection of over 40 harpsichords and pianos dating from the 1570 to 1845.

    The museum’s calendar of events features a great line-up of concerts, music lectures, and other events. Their current exhibition, A Measure of Music: S.T.E.A.M. and the Musical Mind, highlights the relationship between science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and music.

    Make the Most of Your Sigal Music Museum Visit

    The museum is conveniently located in Heritage Green, so it can always be combined with a visit to its other neighboring museums; The Upcountry History Museum, Greenville County Museum of Art, The Children’s Museum of the Upstate or the Greenville County Library. Expect to spend up to an hour or so of walking through the bi-level exhibition venue and learning the history of each instrument.

    My kids enjoyed the interactive audio guide stations that accompanied each instrument on display. The exhibition panels also gave a rich overview of the significance of these instruments. Did you know that harpsichord’s preceded the piano but was gainfully unseated in the concert hall due to the piano’s dynamic range? Kids were curious about the intricate engineering of the instruments while we adults were fascinated with the craftsmanship and historical details.

    In our visit, we were lucky to catch one of the founders and museum curator Mr. Tom Strange who gave us an immersive tour of the galleries (some of the pieces are from his private collection). It was Mr. Strange, along with his vintage instrument aficionados, who conceptualized the idea for this museum.

    He and his peers collect and recondition historic instruments and this museum is a fruit of their labors. He even built the small piano in the center of the room that says “Play me”, which my daughter happily tinkered, a welcome relief to a child surrounded by finely made antique pianos which were understandably “For Display Only.”

    It will be hard to absorb everything in one visit, with all the interesting facts and anecdotes, including how pianos played a distinct role in the Carolinas’ history. Each piece has a unique story to tell. Look out for the piano played by composer Chopin in the photo with Mr. Strange. 

    Also, look for the Johann Schanz Grand piano equipped with five pedals. This one caught us by surprise as we heard drum and bells activated by one of the pedals! Truly, this is one museum that comes with bells and whistles (literally). We will most definitely be back for another visit to the galleries or to attend a concert.

    A lovely High Tea experience awaits every month at the Grand Holland Estate in Simpsonville, SC and we are thrilled to be able to share the details with you. Thank you especially to the Grand Holland for inviting us to try it out.

    While the beautiful tea room at the Grand Holland Estate in Simpsonville, SC isn’t a secret garden, it certainly feels like a hidden oasis. And they have High Tea! We’ve been awaiting a place that has regularly scheduled High Tea and were thrilled to find Grand Holland. 

    We experienced their High Tea, which happens every month, and it was a lovely and peaceful afternoon, one that we really cannot recommend highly enough to our readers.

    About the Grand Holland Estate 

    If you’ve heard of the Grand Holland Estate, it’s likely because you have been to a wedding there or know that it’s primarily a wedding venue. And a gorgeous one it is. There is a stunning grand staircase, a beautiful main room with chandeliers, and outdoor gardens perfect for that fairytale wedding. 

    They also host bridal parties before weddings there. They have several rooms set up as bed & breakfast overnight rooms that literally look like they belong in a castle. I’d stay here in a heartbeat but I don’t have any friends getting married.

    The Estate opened in 2000 and is set on six acres. The house itself is more than 10,000 square feet. They have hosted thousands of weddings and private events in the last 24 years and have helped many people to walk away with lovely memories together. 

    While the venue is primarily for weddings, they have options to rent the space for corporate parties, groups for High Tea, events, or any number of other occasions where such a beautiful venue would fit.

    I had never been to a High Tea before and was thrilled to have the opportunity to attend one. I thought I needed one of those fancy hats that you see in movies where the characters have High Tea or Afternoon Tea, which I do not possess. Thankfully, I didn’t need one of those and was still able to enjoy a lovely afternoon with my daughters here. 

    Walking into the Grand Holland Estate is like strolling into a hidden oasis, complete with large oaks that thankfully still stand after the hurricane to line the parking area. The estate itself has elegant white columns, a balcony with black iron rails, and doors with lions on their handles.

    There are tables set up in the tea room, which gives you a view of the grand staircase and sparkling chandelier. Megan Wilburn, one of the owners, greets you and escorts you to your table. She is so welcoming and is such an excellent hostess. You will have place settings with a menu of what is offered – think grape salad, finger sandwiches, cookies, and scones – and a tea etiquette quiz, which thankfully no one tested us on because my daughters and I hardly got any answers right (but we did learn a lot!).

    Besides bagged tea at the table, you are welcome to enjoy their loose-leaf tea options, which I absolutely loved. A couple years ago I started to get into loose-leaf tea and just fell in love with so many different varieties so I was thrilled to see what they had. My two daughters, ages 10 and 13, are definitely not tea drinkers but to my surprise, found teas they really enjoyed in the loose-leaf tea room and had two cups at our table. But if you’re not a hot tea drinker or have kids who aren’t, the Grand Holland also has iced tea and water if you like.

    The food at High Tea

    The food was really good and different from what we usually eat. I can’t say that I often make cucumber and dill finger sandwiches for my kids or that vegetable flatbread with teeny pieces of veggies over cheese is on our menu at home. But maybe they should be. We immensely enjoyed everything set before us. Even though High Tea is not a lunch, there was plenty of food and we felt full, but not like the kind of rolling-out-the-door-I’m-so-full kind of feeling. It was perfect. 

    Honest Mom Review

    I went to High Tea at the Grand Holland Estate on a day when my stress level was high. I had a lot of work to do and deadlines to meet. My daughters had schoolwork they needed to get done. Other things were weighing heavily on my mind. But as soon as we walked in and sat down, I felt it easy to let a lot of that go and just focus on the present for the time we were there. This is normally an impossible task for me. High stress is normal and letting things go isn’t my personality but there was something really special about this environment that made it happen. The atmosphere was something out of a storybook, one that values tranquility and peace.

    I enjoyed the tea, the food, the music, and the time with my daughters. Everything else could wait for an hour. Where can you go and feel like that? Megan does a wonderful job with the entire experience and if you’re looking for something special and unique to do with your children or girlfriends or family, this is it. 

    Booking Your Own High Tea 

    High Tea at Grand Holland Estate happens once a month and you can book your spot online on their website. Tickets are $35/person and include everything mentioned in this story. High Tea is from 11:30 am – 1:30 pm but you don’t need to get there right when it starts. We showed up about 12:30 pm and left around 1:30 pm. Nothing was rushed and we were able to look around the house and see all the beautiful rooms and the bridal suite. It was wonderful. 

    You can also book a High Tea experience at the Estate as a private group, which I think would be pretty amazing. Just contact Megan and she will help you arrange everything.

    Pregnancy and Infant Loss: Permission to Break the Silence

    Did you know October is Infant and Pregnancy Loss Awareness Month? This loss is more common than most people realize. Local mom and KAG Guest Contributor, Tanika Dillard, is sharing her story of infant and pregnancy loss with us today in order to raise awareness and let others know they are not alone.

    October is a month filled with raising awareness for many noble causes; some of which are less popular.  Breast Cancer Awareness, Breastfeeding Awareness, Bullying Awareness, Domestic Violence Awareness, and Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness are just a handful of the focused topics of support for the month.  While I have been most familiar with Breast Cancer Awareness in the past, I have become passionate about Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness.

    October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month

    President Ronald Reagan experienced the death of his daughter, Christine Reagan, in 1940. Some reports believe she died at birth while other reports suggest she lived for nine hours before passing away.  Whatever the story may be, President Reagan carried Christine’s legacy with him over forty years later as he signed Proclamation 5890 on October 25, 1998, recognizing October as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month.

    Since 1998, many who have been affected by pregnancy and infant loss have been personally compelled to not only participate in these events but also to be a voice of reality and encouragement for others. In December of 2007, I became marked for the cause of breaking the silence when my flawless pregnancy morphed into the fetal demise of our eighteen-week-old daughter, Destiny. Just seven months later, (July 2008) our second flawless pregnancy ended in fetal demise of our seventeen-week-old daughter, Briauna. And July 2009, our third daughter, Madison was born at nineteen weeks.  Astoundingly, she lived for nine hours before joining the road her sisters had traveled before her.

    Somehow I knew I had to unearth the strength to break the silence of pregnancy and infant loss. Statistics show one in four women experience loss due to miscarriage, stillbirth, or SIDS. I completely felt as of the statistics were not in my favor.  Despite how “unfair” our experiences seemed, I knew there were others who also knew the hollowness in my heart but did not have a safe outlet to share their pain, frustrations, dreams, anger, etc.

    My passion and priority in life is to break the silence of pregnancy and infant loss, support those who grieve, and dispel the myths and unrealistic expectations of those who are fortunate to never experience this type of heartbreak.

    After our first miscarriage with Destiny, I was amazed at how many women pulled me aside to whisper, “I’ve lost a baby also”. Most of these women were twice my age. Not only had they experienced loss but the common theme echoed in each sacred, tearful conversation was how they never told anyone about the loss and how they tried to just ” Get over it”.

    Breaking the silence

    Can I break the silence and give you permission to speak of your loss? Many carry memories in their heart for decades and never open their lips for fear of shame and the expectation to be “Over that by now”.

    My grief experience has changed my life forever in part because I choose to give voice to my suffering! In doing so, I received support from a community of people who knew a similar pain and I found the strength to live!

    It doesn’t matter if you’ve experienced loss last week or 20 years ago, you have permission break the silence and receive support.

    In August of 2010, our story had a different ending and a new beginning. My husband and I had a living baby to bring home.  Our entire world became better the day Ethan was born. Surprisingly his amazing presence and beautiful face were perfect but they were not enough to replace the painful memories of the past.

    This is one of my favorite pictures! Ethan was just a month old and I could not express my love to him enough. I watched him sleep, I held him for hours just because and I thought of how perfect life was now that we had a “take home” child. In reality, underneath the overwhelming joy in my heart, I also felt emptiness and an increased longing for his precious sisters Destiny, Briauna, and Madison. Fear gripped me many days and I wondered if something would happen to him and I’d be forced to say goodbye to him also.

    At night, I’d kiss his sweet face four times…one for each of his sisters and a kiss for himself. …just in case… The whole truth is, although my faith was renewed in God and my doctors, fear visited me frequently. Daily, I had to choose faith over fear.

    Having a successful pregnancy after a miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant loss can never erase the pain or cause one to forget the hopes and dreams for the child they no longer hold.

    Our story did not end with Ethan’s arrival. In December 2011, our second son, Israel, was born silently at thirty-eight weeks due to a cord accident. The complexity of this cycle of grief is incomprehensible. In spite of all we had lost, the message of hope was beckoning us to not give up.  Thankfully, we held on to love for each other and our dream of a family and welcomed our third son, Evan in April 2013.

    My grief experience has evolved from dark, cold sorrow to warm, compassionate support for those who are hurting.

    I choose to break the silence on the emotions and reality of pregnancy after loss.

    What We Thought Of Viva Chicken in Greenville, SC

    The menu includes three unique Peruvian-style juice offerings. If you aren’t sure, they are happy to let you sample them; ask! The Chicha Morada was described to us as “Christmas in a Cup,” and that was spot on! If you’re a fan of mulled holiday drinks, this drink is a must-try! India ordered the Herbal limeade, a lime/rosemary/basil/mint juice. They also offer Pepsi fountain drinks, beer, wine, and Peruvian Inca Cola.

    I ordered the signature “Pollo a la Brasa,” with a side of yuca fries and the Peruvian fried rice, Arroz Chaufa. One of the things I loved about the meal was that jasmine rice is utilized by Viva Chicken for all the rice dishes. It’s my go-to at home for most rice-inclusive recipes because it’s flavorful all on its own.
    The chicken was perfectly cooked; the yuca fries were piping hot and crispy served with a chilled queso sauce for dipping.

    However, the Arroz Chaufa was my favorite part of the meal. I can’t explain why, but the flavors were reminiscent of my maternal grandfather’s rice dishes. This is curious to me because he was Puerto Rican and never prepared a dish like this, but was a wonderful home cook. His dishes are something I miss often, so I think I’ll be a regular at Viva Chicken so I can feel like I’m back in his kitchen.
    I’ve been on a soup kick lately and also plan to try the Sopa De Pollo soon!

    I should mention that the menus at different locations vary, so some items you see posted at other locations on the Viva Chicken Social Media might not be available at all Viva Chicken locations. Make sure when you are browsing the online menu, you have the right location selected.

    The menu at Viva Chicken included plenty of options (including vegetarian), but it was not overwhelming. The food was fast, and fresh. And with its unique Peruvian menu, Viva Chicken is a welcome addition to the fast casual Woodruff Road scene.

    The Origin of Oktoberfest in Germany

    First, let’s talk about how this party got started. Over 200 years ago, a Bavarian crown prince married a princess, which resulted in days of drinking, feasting, and horse races.

    I wanted to know why this marriage has been celebrated since October 12, 1810.

    It turns out that those horse races were so popular, they decided to do it annually, and that’s why the party continues today. Although, oddly enough, those horse races are no longer a part of the celebration.

    To get down to the truth, I consulted my cousin, Frau Roe. She’s a German teacher locally and my go-to for all things Bavarian-related.

    Me:
    So Frau Roe, Why do we celebrate Oktoberfest? Is it because of racehorses, love, or something else?

    Frau Roe:
    “Today, it’s more of a festival atmosphere, carnival rides, lots of food, lots of beer, still celebrated in the same spot under all those tents. Many Bavarians wear traditional clothing to celebrate history. (Lederhosen and Dirndl) So, while it has changed a lot over the years, the original reason is still in the hearts of the Bavarians. It’s definitely a celebration of heritage! ”

Regardless, we’ve got basic information for you on how to play the game as well as a list of places where you can play the game. And luckily, there are plenty of places to play pickleball in the Upstate.

    What is Pickleball?

    If you’ve ever wondered what the heck pickleball is, you’re not alone. The name alone tends to conjure up giggles. But it’s one of the fastest growing sports in America, and it’s not hard to see why. Once you learn how to play (it’s easy!), it’s hard to stop.

    The sport has been around for a while. Three dads in Washington invented the game in 1965  when their kids were complaining about boredom during the summer (we’ve all been there… I can just imagine these dads sitting around and coming up with ideas for a creative and fun game for their kids so they’d stop constantly repeating “I’m bored”).

    I wonder if those three dads knew their game would become so popular? But regardless, their main goal in creating this game was to provide something fun for their whole family to do together.

    Pickleball paddles and balls

    Pickleball is a combination of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. The rules are simple, and it’s an easy game for beginners to learn. It can become quite competitive and fast-paced for more experienced players.

    You can play pickleball indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court (20×44 feet) with a slightly modified tennis net that’s 34 inches high in the center. The court itself is striped similar to a tennis court. Players use a smooth paddle and a plastic ball with holes (the balls look almost exactly like wiffle balls, but pickleballs are slightly larger). You can play the game as doubles or singles, and truly any any age group can play.

    Two Decades Of Tupelo Honey Cafe And Happy Diners

    Since Tupelo Honey opened its doors in Downtown Asheville, diners have been leaving full and happy. Tourists to the North Carolina town and locals pulled up a chair to dine on farm-to-table southern cuisine. It’s been over 20 years since that little cafe opened on College Street in Downtown Asheville, and it’s given way to over two dozen locations across the US.

    While the original Tupelo Honey Cafe owner sold the cafe after eight years, the spirit of the original cafe remains. Executive Chef Eric Gabrynowicz has translated the menu to differing versions throughout the company’s locations. While each location is unique to its surroundings, they have to be cautious not to stray too far from the original because Tupelo Honey Cafe has gained notoriety across the country, from both people who have visited the flagship location in Asheville and people who have seen the restaurant featured on TV shows.

    I remember first hearing about it in the first season of Rachael Ray’s $40 A Day, where she would visit different towns and try to eat out the entire day for under $40. At the time, I didn’t live in the Carolinas, but the food looked so good, the episode stuck out in my mind, and when I did move here a few years later, I sought it out on my first trip to Asheville.

    Navigating The Menu At Tupelo Honey Cafe In Greenville

    The menu offers so many options you might be overwhelmed. If you are indecisive like I am, sometimes it’s best to pre-game a menu like this. Sometimes it doesn’t help when everything looks delicious, as is the case at Tupelo Honey Cafe.

    Southern-inspired veggies, paired with their famous fried chicken, make a simple choice that will result in a meal you won’t be disappointed about. However, the problems begin when your eyes veer past that first part of the menu to all of the other items offered.

    Do you choose that fried chicken with waffles or sweet potato pancakes?
    Do you skip the fried chicken altogether and choose the shrimp and grits?

    When I visited Tupelo Honey Cafe, I ordered the Mac-N-Cheese Waffles with “Asheville” hot chicken. It was delicious, and I paired it with a side dish of the Crispy Brussel Sprouts. It hit the spot, and my only complaint is there never seems to be enough Brussel sprouts so that I’m not sad when they are gone. I’ll need to order an entree-sized serving of them and call it my meal one of these days.

    Speaking of side dishes, the options are plentiful and all delicious. Once again, I’m going to take this opportunity to lobby for my desire for restaurants to offer side dish flights. Think about it; it’s the perfect answer to indecisiveness. A little scoop of all the things. It could even be offered as an appetizer as long as it happens.

    When the cabin fever hits at your house or you just need a witness before your parenting takes a homicidal turn, (can I get an amen?), some of the common solutions are:

    • Outdoor parks—where your children can exert all that tattle-taling energy and soak up some immune-boosting Vitamin D
    • Target—for those days you want to plunge yourself into debt on mustard throw pillows and another 3T tutu
    • The ever-faithful library—who doesn’t love taking home 23 books and incurring vast late fees 5 weeks later?

    All of these are outstanding options. Really, they are. Even better, not one of them requires a fee at the door. Sometimes, though, the weather doesn’t cooperate with park days, your bank account is crying out for mercy, and your children seem unable to speak at anything less than jet plane volume.

    (As an important side note, all parents treasure the indoor mall play area for the pinch hit, but it’s not every day that you are willing to expose your sweet spawn to a petri-dish of a playground. A parent must brandish a certain brazen confidence and absolute desperation in order to surrender to the mall play area.)

    At these moments, you need different options—options with easy parking and free admission. Indoor, budget-friendly possibilities, please! Say no more.

    Free Indoor Places to Visit in Greenville

    Tractor Supply Company

    Affectionately referred to as TSC, Tractor Supply Co. is an absolute diamond-in-the-rough. Before there was “Hearth and Home” and “Magnolia” brands, there was TSC. All the galvanized and farmhouse beauty but in authentic form. Besides the numerous unconventional home décor options, the aisles of pet supplies and farm animal care are wonderfully priced and, quite honestly, fascinating to walk through.

    Perusing the rows of farm equipment is a bonus educational opportunity for both parent and child. Seeds and rain boots are a great price and nostalgic kids’ toys at the front of the store offer some great browsing opportunities. Before you know it, you’ll be headed home with a cow-dressed Cabbage Patch doll, a book on backyard duck ownership, several packets of heirloom cucumbers seeds, a hand-carved wooden sign for the kitchen, a galvanized planter for the front porch, tiny Paw Patrol work gloves, and a 3-year plan for chicken coops and chicks from Tractor Supply.

    Did I mention the live chicks?

    Beginning in March, Tractor Supply carries live chicks. You can’t hold them, but just observing the mangers of fluffy chicks proves plenty entertaining for children–at least 15 minutes of contained time for you to enjoy your latte without pushing a cart. Just settle in with your copy of Beginner’s Composting and let your children enjoy the wonder of fresh, playful chickies. Well, not truly. Please watch your kids in stores instead of reading and be an upstanding patron. But, you know what I mean! You will pull out of that parking lot saying “TSC is the place for me.”

    The Home Depot/Lowe’s

    Much like TSC, The Home Depot and Lowe’s Home Improvement stores offer endless browsing opportunities, but on a roomier scale. Just let your kids run down those aisles on dreary days for an easy, indoor recess.

    Most parents are well-aware already of the magical mowing tractors section. Kids admire each colorful one for endless entertainment. So many opinions based upon styles, yes? The red tractor can be far superior to the green one on this trip, and we will never know the true reason.

    If you get bored of all the tractor riding, though, don’t discount the rest of the store. The amount of activity kids find in browsing the kitchen displays, gently opening appliance doors, choosing bathroom sinks (trust me), and rubbing their hands over carpet samples is remarkable.

    While browsing, always use caution to ensure no damage is done to store items, of course. Touching and holding is absolutely natural and expected in a home improvement store, but use care and common sense!

    Sometimes, when the guilt sets in that you’re not buying anything after two hours in the store, you wander over to cleaning supplies and pick up a new bottle of dishwashing detergent. Settle down. You aren’t a complete free-loader. A bronze lawn toad is another unforgettable haste purchase. Rainy days are no match to the eternal fun of these home improvement stores, and you might even spend less than at Target.

    Ocean’s Floor

    Located near Haywood Mall, Ocean’s Floor is a fascinating aquatic store specializing in natural aquarium assembly and salt-water fish. The small store is dark and beautiful, lit almost completely by aquarium lights. Live plants and ocean rocks are available for purchase in large tubs. The demo aquariums are brimming with greenery and corals native to the fish inside. The little shrimp often conceal themselves so well that just counting shrimp in a tank consumes a few minutes.

    The real highlight of visiting Ocean Floor, however, is the staff. The staff are happy to answer your questions and patiently talk with curious children. If you end up convinced that your household isn’t complete without aquatic life, the betta fish set-ups are reasonably priced and come with much more instruction from employees than you find at a pet store. All-in-all, Ocean’s Floor is a wonderful way to spend a drab afternoon and, perhaps, support a small, local business.

    Cabela’s

    Cabela’s is honestly a combination of Tractor Supply and Ocean’s Floor. You will find dozens of areas where you can simply wander and learn about different lifestyles and hobbies. The large aquariums and ample animal displays hold the attention of even the littlest shopper. Besides, are you even a millennial parent if you don’t snap an Instagram photo of your angel spawn at the stone fireplace entrance?

    Cabela’s has it all. As long as you’re not squeamish regarding taxidermy or uncomfortable around weapons, Cabela’s is fun for the whole, perusing family. It’s hard to leave there without the urge to plan a family camping trip—that is, until you walk back out into the blazing heat or torrential rain and remember that either of those two weather patterns could actually happen while you are out in your tent. Reality check 101 right there. Consider carefully.
